I put a lot of time into preparing our hearts for Christmas, but often I just let Easter sneak up on me. If I'm honest, I don't really know how to go from the twinkle lights of Christmas into the darkness of winter, and think ahead to spring and the celebration of resurrection. I get a little closer every year, but culturally, we aren't given a template for what this looks like, so it really feels like swimming upstream. Every year, about this time of year, sickness after round of sickness keeps hitting and I'm really tired. I had decided I was going to coast into the season leading to Easter, when I saw the title of Elyse's book pop up in my inbox. It felt like a sign to reconsider. Last year I attended my first-ever Ash Wednesday service and shared about it. I was shocked and discouraged to have a lot of negative comments on that post. People assumed we were veering away from "normal" Christianity. So, before we get started, Elyse, can you tell us about the practice of Ash Wednesday and the faith roots, and what denominations practice it? How does this holiday help us to bridge from winter to Easter? I've come to really love Advent practices. Remembering who we wait for and how long Israel waited has given me a lot of peace in the brokenness of the world. Turn on the television, radio, or explore the internet, and you'll find advice on every type of relationship, from friendships to getting along with your parents, and of course, advice on romantic relationships. People are clamoring to figure love out…but what does the Bible say about love?1 Corinthians 13:4–5 says, “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. Questions about the claim that if Christians really want to be open-minded, they need to read and study other religions before committing to Christianity, and with so many paths claiming to be the sole path, what is to be said about those who choose incorrectly? For many Americans, untangling today's U.S. politics feels especially tough because the rise of religious‑right conservatism can seem sudden and ominous. Without a grounding in religious history and its influence on American political development over time, sweeping dominionist initiatives like Project 2025, fringe movements such as QAnon, and shadowy organizations like the Heritage Foundation may appear to come out of thin air. Fortunately, author and fundamentalist‑politics expert Keri L. Ladner, Ph.D., guides listeners back through the archives, tracing these phenomena to roots that reach back to the late 1800s. Ladner, who earned her doctorate in Divinity from the University of Edinburgh, is the author of End‑Time Politics: From the Moral Majority to QAnon (2024). The book maps the evolution of conservative Christianity, from its use of prophecy and rapture‑focused visions to the rise of figures like Jerry Falwell. She shows how those ideas have mutated over decades, ultimately feeding the ideologies that underpin today's Trump‑era regime. Ladner first explained that the type of religious movements she specializes in is not the same as what was known as ‘Christianity' before the late 1800s. “The movements that I'm looking into are very new. They're very new offshoots of Christianity, specifically of Protestantism, American evangelicalism. They did not begin to develop in a form that we would recognize today until the late 1800s,” she explained. Her doctoral thesis essentially covered Jerry Falwell and the theological system known as dispensationalism, a historical movement she connects to John Nelson Darby, a 19th-century religious leader. In an age of technology booms and information-sharing, it's amazing how lonely we have become. Everything and everyone is connected, but does all that online connection ever leave you feeling disconnected in real life?
