It adapts the first act of the 2003 stage musical by Stephen Schwartz and Holzman, which was loosely based on Gregory Maguire's 1995 novel, itself a reimagining of the Oz books and the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. Lost yet? The film stars Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Galinda the Good Witch, with Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang, Marissa Bode, Peter Dinklage, Michelle Yeoh, and Jeff Goldblum in supporting roles. Dana Fox offers an incredibly generous admission in today's conversation: "I find writing REALLY torturous." And yet, she's one of Hollywood's most successful writers, having written on major franchises like CRUELLA and recently WICKED, for which she has been nominated and won countless industry awards. What's her secret? Tune into as she discusses why writing can feel so hard and how she pushes through those blocks - or perhaps more fittingly, defies gravity. Learn more about your ad choices. One day, several decades ago, the writer Winnie Holzman was shopping in a Manhattan bookstore where a particular cover caught her eye. It showed a woman with a green face, a black hat pulled down over her eyes. The book was “Wicked” by Gregory Maguire, a retelling of L. Frank Baum's “Oz” stories from the perspective of the Wicked Witch of the West. “When I turned it over and read the little précis on the back, it blew my mind,” Holzman said. “I thought it was such a brilliant premise.” The book ended up on Holzman's bookshelf, with its enigmatic cover facing out.Years later, the composer Stephen Schwartz contacted Holzman to ask if she'd be interested in adapting Maguire's book for the stage. The musical they wrote together opened in 2003, and it is now one of the most successful shows in Broadway history. The producers started talking about a movie adaptation, but Holzman was cautious: “We had to really kind of clear our minds and kind of reconceive the whole story.”The film version of “Wicked” opened in 2024, starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, and with a screenplay by Holzman and Dana Fox. It is one of the highest-grossing movies of the year and is nominated for 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture.Winnie Holzman joins Gilbert Cruz, the editor of the Book Review, to discuss the benefits and drawbacks of adapting your own adaptation. Wicked Part Two Explained | What Will Happen? #wicked #wickedparttwo In this video, we explain what could happen in the second part of the film, 'Wicked.'

Misunderstood because of her green skin, a young woman named Elphaba forges an unlikely but profound friendship with Glinda, a student with an unflinching desire for popularity. Following an encounter with the Wizard of Oz, their relationship soon reaches a crossroad as their lives begin to take very different paths.
Good morning, RVA! It's 53 °F, and today, after the wet weather moves through, looks like our warmest day of the week. Expect highs in the 60s to go along with a small possibility of rain this morning. I think, after today, we might get enough rain-free days to dry out our soggy landscapes! P.S. You are not imagining it: Karri Peifer at Axios Richmond reports that our average winter temperatures are four degrees warmer than in the 1970s. Water cooler Big news from RPS Superintendent Kamras's daily email: The school district has hired a new Chief Wellness Officer and Chief Operating Officer. Both internal hires, Renesha Parks (previously the Director of Exceptional Education) will serve as the CWO, while Dana Fox (the Director of School Construction) will take over at COO. Congratulations to these bold, brave women who step into important and complicated roles. We'll see what the future holds for them, because I was pretty convinced that the School Board would pull some shenanigans to keep these positions open even longer. Jahd Khalil at VPM reports that the Mayor's administration has finalized the total amount of revenue collected from the City's real estate tax, which clocks in at $21 million over their original estimate. Most of the additional cash will help pay for inclement weather shelters and additional raises for police, fire, and emergency communications staff. Quick aside about the latter: “A press release from the mayor's office said those pay adjustments would be for employees not accounted for in a $17 million increase in first-responder wages in May's budget.” This sort of “Ope! We found more money!” happens every year to some extent, so you shouldn't be too scandalized by this reporting—but it's clearly not the best way to run things. Would last year's budget process have gone any differently with an additional $17 million hanging around? No clue, but it'd be nice to have all the money on the table before we head into budget season. That's why (I think), when the Mayor introduced his plan to issue real estate tax rebates, an additional piece of the assessments puzzle was to “align the city's assessment and budget cycles.” Theoretically that administrative shift might could fix these sorts of year-end money influxes. Richmond BizSense's Jonathan Spiers has some great reporting on the draft details of Those Thee Zoning Changes, specifically the proposed changes to the City's Airbnb regulations: “the recommendations would eliminate a primary residency requirement in which operators must reside at the property being rented for at least half the year. Instead, [Short-Term Rentals] would be permissible in any dwelling in any of the city's zoning districts, but with a distance requirement separating the unit from another STR at a non-primary residence.” This is a hard sentence for my brain to understand, but, I think the intent here is to allow landlords to run multiple Airbnbs but prevent them from buying up entire blocks of housing to use as short-term rentals. This is, of course, anti-housing and will reduce the amount of housing stock in Richmond, but I think it is a compromise I'd be willing to trade for permitting by-right Accessory Dwelling Units everywhere and the entire elimination of parking minimums (the other two zoning changes). You can flip through the City's presentation on these changes here and you can leave a public comment here. We all know the A.P. Hill monument at Hermitage and Laburnum is horrible, creates one of the most dangerous intersections in the city, and will, at some point, come down. When, though? I've been pretty wait-and-see, since legal challenges tend to take forever to lawyer their way through the system, but it does feel like we're getting close. NBC12's Henry Graff reports that the statue could come down as early as next week. Exciting! This morning's longread How Apples Are Ranked I'm almost positive I've linked to this apple guy before, but now he's got his own, very thorough, very funny apple ranking site. Yes, it's mostly a joke, but it's also entirely a real apple ranking site. Thankfully in the early 2000s, due to the emergence of a class of idle yuppies willing to shell out disproportionate amounts of disposable income at organic grocery stores, it became economically viable to invest in the development of what I term “designer apples.” As a result, a dizzying array of new apples hit the shelves and continued to do so year after year. With so many new breeds, the antiquated system of delegating an apple as “good” or “bad” is an unworkable injustice of oversimplification. Society demands an updated rubric for apple evaluation that meets the moment. I have created that rubric. I have no children. This rating scale is my only hope to keep my namesake alive. It is something I hope to be utilized for generations to come and is my only chance at achieving immortality. Therefore I am naming this system: The Frange 100 Point Apple Rating Scale aka the F100. It's a super salty Popcorn Podcast episode as Leigh and Tim disagree on The Lost City, starring Sandra Bullock, Channing Tatum and Daniel Radcliffe. Home Before Dark is a great family show available on Apple TV+, I discovered it this summer and quickly binged it and got caught up on the series. The show centers around Hilde Lisko, who is a journalist like her father, as the family moves to a lakeside town where her father once lived; while there, she unearths a cold case that everyone, including her father, tried to bury. It's inspired by real life American journalist Hilde Lysiak, who founded and publishes the Orange Street News. She is the youngest member of the Society of Professional Journalists, as well as a book series called Hilde Cracks the Case. I can't recommend this series enough. If you have Apple TV+ watch it, if you don't, then get the free trial and binge it. You go along with Hilde, her friends and family to help solve mysteries and it leaves you wanting more. Season one deals with a murder and a boy, who was a friend of her dad's, that went missing when her father was a young boy. The cast is amazing and you will recognize some people from other things. If that doesn't grab your attention, you will also enjoy the music. Nathan Lanier does a phenomenal job!!! I promise, you will enjoy the show that was created by Dana Fox and Dara Resnik. I can't wait to see what happens in season 3!!! The Journalist (diffordsguide.com): Ingredients 1 1/2 oz Rutte Dry Gin 1/2 oz Noilly Prat Extra Dry 1/2 oz Martini Rosso Sweet Vermouth 1/4 oz Orange Curaçao Liqueur 1/4 oz Lemon Juice Freshly Squeezed 1 Dash of Angostura Aromatic Bitters 1/12 oz of Sugar Syrup (Rich) 2 Sugar to 1 Water (Optional) Directions Shake all ingredients with ice in a cocktail shaker. Fine strain into chilled glass. Drinking Game: Drink when... A clue is found. Hilde's journal is open. Animation is used. Hilde is typing up an article. You recognize a song being played. Someone gets arrested. Take a shot when... A minor gives a powerful speech. As always, drink responsibly and with others, drinking with friends is more fun. Cruella is a 2021 American crime comedy-drama film based on the character Cruella de Vil from Dodie Smith's 1956 novel The Hundred and One Dalmatians and Disney's 1961 animated film adaptation.[6] The film is directed by Craig Gillespie with a screenplay by Dana Fox and Tony McNamara, from a story by Aline Brosh McKenna, Kelly Marcel, and Steve Zissis.[7] It is the third live-action adaptation in the 101 Dalmatians franchise. Emma Stone stars as the title character, with Emma Thompson, Joel Fry, Paul Walter Hauser, Emily Beecham, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, and Mark Strong in supporting roles. Set in the 1970s London punk rock movement as Estella, an aspiring fashion designer, explores the path that will lead her to become a notorious criminal known as Cruella de Vil. Walt Disney Pictures announced the film's development in 2013, with Andrew Gunn as producer. Stone was cast in 2016 and also serves as an executive producer on the film alongside Glenn Close, who previously portrayed Cruella in the previous live-action adaptations, 101 Dalmatians (1996) and 102 Dalmatians (2000). Principal photography took place between August and November 2019 in England. Cruella premiered in Los Angeles on May 18, 2021, the first major red carpet event since the COVID-19 pandemic began, and was released in the United States theatrically and simultaneously available on Disney+ with Premier Access on May 28. The film received generally positive reviews from critics, with praise for Gillespie's direction, the performances (particularly Stone, Thompson, and Hauser), visual style, costume design, and soundtrack, but some criticism for the screenplay. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/popcorn-junkies/message

Physician marketing guru Dana Fox joins Bill to speak about her extensive experience working with plastic surgeons. The two discuss the importance of branding and how it has evolved into the digital medium. They describe the past importance of Yellowpages and agree that the message delivery systems have vastly changed in recent years. In the digital sphere, these changes can help physicians reach interested audiences rather than large groups of uninterested consumers. Bill and Dana also cover the importance of branding for physicians, especially plastic surgeons. They explain how branding and marketing should cater to the overall messaging of a practice's products and services. Additionally, they agree there is a need for everyone in the practice to embrace organizational branding from top to bottom. When done properly, branding complements the overall product messaging and sets you apart from the competition. Dana also speaks on her experience with practice loyalty programs and marketing services. For physicians like plastic surgeons, loyalty programs can help promote supplemental treatments, retain satisfied customers and boost return on investment. To help create a proper loyalty program, practices should bring enthusiasm, believe in their investments and keep it simple to engage with patients. When combined with excellent branding, Bill and Dana agree that loyalty programs can help boost revenue over the long run for plastic surgeons. For episode 43 I have the great pleasure of welcoming back Dana Fox to discuss his new project ‘The Valley of the Four Houses' Firstly, it's the name of the book he's writing. Secondly, it's the name of an ongoing series of talks and lectures he's giving on Patreon. The talks encompass film reviews, but not in the usual way. Dana present's theories about particular films. It's experimental. It's a type of magic. The magic for me is learning to discount nothing, to see tiny hints of something which might lead you in an unexpected direction. Links as always in the show notes. In the show we cover all of the above and we talk about some of the paranormal subject matter, magick, philosophy and some rare and tragic cryptids. There were some audio issues during the recording so there is some background noise in places but nothing too unbearable. Dana Fox is a trainee Gestalt psychotherapist, a practicing Magickian most notably in visionary magic. He's been drawn to the subject of UFO's and the paranormal for as long as he can remember. In the this episode Dana talks about Non-terrestrial writing/communication. Things seen on the exterior and interior of witnessed alien craft; writing which has been the result of possession; and so-called automatic writing and channelled texts. Our use of written language sets humans apart from many of the other beings on earth. It is also apparent the we share this method of communication with the ultraterrestrial intelligences who come here still. As if that's not enough we talk phantom airships, Kenneth Arnold, Black Triangles and Ghost rockets. Plus the incredible link he has made between Rendleshem forest and an incident in Utsuro Bune in 1830.
