Lester Kiewit speaks to world renowned diversity trainer and teacher Jane Elliott who famously conducted the blue eye, brown eye exercise with her students to demonstrate the irrational and ridiculous constructs of racism. They discuss the expulsion from the US of SA Ambassador Ebrahim Rasool, after he was accused of being a race baiting politician by the Trump administration, and the fear held by right wing white America that fuelled the move.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Website: www.freeblackthought.com Erec Smith is a research fellow at the Cato Institute and an Associate Professor of Rhetoric at York College of Pennsylvania. Although he has eclectic scholarly interests, his primary work focuses on the rhetoric of anti-racist activism, theory, and pedagogy, as well as the role of rhetoric in a free, pluralistic, and civil society. He co-founded Free Black Thought, a nonprofit highlighting viewpoint diversity within black communities. Free Black Thought includes a compendium of black artists, writers, academics, and public intellectuals not discussed in mainstream media. The organization also has a Journal of Free Black Thought, which publishes anything–from poetry to scholarly work—that discusses or displays a variety of viewpoints within the black diaspora. Smith is the author of A Critique of Anti-Racism in Rhetoric and Composition: The Semblance of Empowerment (2020), a book in which he scrutinizes contemporary modes of anti-racism in his field. The book was conceived after Smith's observations of his field led him to conclude that anti‐racist initiatives did more to disempower students and faculty than empower them. Smith is an advisor for both the Foundation Against Intolerance and Racism and Counterweight, an organization that advocates for classical liberal concepts of social justice.
You've been hearing about DEI training. It's supposed to make us aware of our unconscious prejudice. But Rhetoric Professor and former diversity trainer Erec Smith tells me today's DEI training does more harm than good. "If you can keep this race thing going," he explains, "then you will always have a business in getting rid of racism.”

Episode 25 - Interview With Jane Elliott - Internationally Known Teacher, Lecturer, Diversity Trainer, and Recipient of the National Mental Health Association Award for Excellence in Education. Ms. Elliott recalls the origins of the "Blue Eyes/Brown Eyes Exercise" that she conducted on April 5, 1968, the day after the murder of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This exercise cast her in the national spotlight for educating her all-white students in Iowa about how it feels to be treated on the basis of a physical characteristic one is born with that can't be changed, and it also caused her to become an outcast in her community. Combining a lesson she had already planned about Native Americans, she used the Sioux prayer "Oh great spirit, keep me from ever judging a man until I have walked in his moccasins" to help teach her students what it feels like to be treated as a person of color in this country. Ms. Elliott is considered a pioneer of diversity training. She has spoken at 350 universities and has appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show five times. She is listed on the timeline of 30 notable educators by textbook editor McGraw-Hill, amongst the likes of Confucius, Plato, Booker T. Washington, and Maria Montessori. On November 2016, Ms. Elliott's name was added to the BBC's annual list of 100 Women.JaneElliott.comjane@janeelliott.comGivingHeartBeat@gmail.comPodcast Merch!!Catch me on Facebook And on Instagram! Thanks so much for listening!

What is a 'safe space' and who gets to decide whether or not it's safe? How is systemic racism perpetuated by trauma and also the cause of trauma - not only for Black people but also white people? In this series on social disparities, Dr. Jill Wener, a board-certified Internal Medicine specialist, meditation expert, and tapping practitioner, interviews experts in multiple fields relating to social justice and anti-racism. In this video, Jill interviews Bianca Wilson, anti-racism activist and co-founder of Say Space, a Diversity and Inclusion consultancy. Bianca shares her personal and professional journey from working at a well-known advertising agency to leaving corporate America and co-founding a Diversity and Inclusion consultancy. She discusses terms such as 'safe space' and 'unconscious bias' and how they can be fraught (and cause more racial trauma) for Black people when not applied in a trauma-sensitive way. Bianca talked about the inter-generational trauma that white people have experienced (the "dirty pain" of white trauma), which has both led to and perpetuated systemic racism, and the need to truly heal the trauma from systemic racism for both Black and white people in order to end systemic racism. Bianca Wilson (she/ her/ hers) supports individuals and organizations to get to the core of what is needed so effective communication, impactful leadership and authentic relationships can thrive. With her background in Race Relations at Villanova University, advanced training in Emotional Freedom Technique (‘Tapping') and Cross Cultural Facilitation Training with the renowned Diversity Trainer, Lee Mun Wah, Bianca has been immersed in the world of Coaching, Holistic healing and Diversity and Inclusion for 10 years. Her education, extensive training and experience has led her to work with companies such as Media Arts Lab (Advertising Agency for Apple), Sony Music, PMC/Variety Magazine, Trailer Park, Giant Spoon, Outdoor Voices, Johannes Leonardo, Inspire, AT&T and countless others.
