In this heartfelt episode, Elena Armijo welcomes pianist, writer, and coach Robert Kuang back to the show for a deeply grounding and expansive conversation on the powerful intersections between creativity, leadership, and the human need for care. Through personal stories and grounded insight, they explore how slowing down, honoring emotions, and reconnecting with the body are not luxuries, but essential foundations for innovation, emotional processing, and navigating change with intention and heart. Check out Elena's website to learn more about how she can support you in seeing and using the power that resides within you. Together, they reflect on the creativity that often lies dormant beneath structured systems and the myth that only certain people are “creative.” Robert shares his journey from New York to Vancouver and how writing, music, and embodiment became lifelines in moments of transition. Elena offers reflections on the practices that help her stay grounded, including walks in nature and learning to sit with discomfort through meditation. Both speak to the importance of intentional self-care - not as luxury, but as necessity - for those holding space for others in turbulent times. Their conversation opens up fresh perspectives on navigating rapid change, emotional processing, and what it means to bring multidimensionality into leadership and life. Through stories of client work, cultural shifts, and inner realignments, Robert and Elena offer practical wisdom for creating space for intuition, joy, and resilience. This episode is an invitation to reconnect with the parts of ourselves that may have been left behind in the name of productivity. Whether facing uncertainty, creative stagnation, or simply longing for more meaning, this conversation reminds us that returning to the body, slowing down, and making space for joy are revolutionary acts of leadership.   Let's Get Social!  Want to hear more from Elena? In this episode, Elena Armijo interviews Ned Hanlon, the president of AGMA (American Guild of Musical Artists) union, about leadership and the future of the arts industry. Ned shares his journey to union leadership, starting with his involvement in negotiating his contract with the Metropolitan Opera. He found his calling in the legal and negotiation side of union leadership and has been actively involved for the past 10 years. Check out Elena's website to learn more about how she can support you in seeing and using the power that resides within you. The pandemic has served as a wake-up call for artists, making them realize the importance of taking care of each other through unions. Companies cannot always provide stability, and artists need to rely on collective action to protect their interests. Ned's goals as AGMA president are to build solidarity through alliances with other unions, empower artists to speak up, and protect them from retaliation. One of the key focuses of the union is diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility. This is addressed both internally within the union and during contract negotiations with companies. By addressing these important issues, the union aims to create a safer environment for artists, tackling problems like harassment and discrimination. Ned sees his role as a facilitator rather than the sole leader. He believes in harnessing the collective power of union members and building consensus. Effective negotiations involve understanding all perspectives, finding common ground, and being willing to exert collective power if necessary. However, Ned emphasizes the importance of avoiding "scorched earth" tactics that can harm all parties involved. Looking to the future, Ned's hope is for the arts industry to survive its current difficulties. He wants all artists to feel empowered to improve their work conditions without fear, and he believes the union can play a crucial role in creating a safe and supportive environment for artists to speak up and advocate for themselves.   Let's Get Social!  Want to hear more from Elena? In this final episode of 2023, Elena Armijo reflects on the year at The C-Suite Collective, the executive coaching company she founded, discussing the importance of slowing down in order to go fast. As a fast-paced leader, Elena realized that taking the time to ensure people were on board and understood expectations was crucial. Throughout the year, The C-Suite Collective intentionally focused on building strong foundations, including processes, values, and fostering community conversations. Check out Elena's website to learn more about how she can support you in seeing and using the power that resides within you. Elena also shares her personal journey of working internally and from the inside out. She highlights the transformative power of working with a coach for an entire year, focusing on healing, boundaries, self-acceptance, and receiving support. By accepting herself more, Elena was able to effectively lead and serve others, encouraging them to also do their inner work. The company's commitment to inclusion and belonging was another key lesson learned in 2023. The C-Suite Collective explored new approaches, engaged in difficult conversations, and emphasized the importance of everyone's right to belong. They prioritized connection over conflict and disagreement, fostering a supportive and inclusive environment. Elena also emphasizes the significance of celebrating the journey, not just the end goals. With the guidance of her coach, she practiced daily self-appreciation and joy throughout December. This shift in mindset allowed her to find fulfillment in the process rather than solely focusing on achieving outcomes. Looking ahead to 2024, Elena plans to simplify her goals by narrowing them down to just five things. This strategic approach will allow her to fully immerse herself in each goal's journey and ensure their successful realization. Finally, Elena expresses deep gratitude for the support she has received from her family, partner, friends, colleagues, clients, and listeners. She wishes everyone a peaceful and restful end to 2023, while also encouraging them to embrace the possibilities that lie ahead in the new year. In summary, Elena shares the key lessons that guided her growth and The C-Suite Collective's development in 2023. These include the importance of slowing down, engaging in internal work, promoting inclusion, celebrating the journey, simplifying goals, and expressing gratitude. It has been a year of self-reflection, growth, and building a strong foundation for continued success.   Let's Get Social!  Want to hear more from Elena? Click here! In this episode, Elena talks with Hilary Hoffman about how she got integrated into the C-Suite Collective. After nearly a decade in finance, spending her time most notably at Goldman Sachs and Oaktree Capital Management, Hilary Hoffman launched her fitness platform The SOTO Method in 2021. The SOTO Method is a program she initially created for herself; strapped for time, she craved a more efficient burn. The workout needed to reflect her reality: she had only 35 minutes, and every single second needed to count. Through Hilary's extensive knowledge of isometrics, SOTO delivers approachability, efficiency and results. In class, you will be reminded to stay in the “can” mindset time and time again. This means physical strength starts with believing four words, “I can do this.” “After my time at Goldman, I made a pivot within the industry, and I landed in a spot that I was not particularly happy in. And that unhappiness brought me to a place of self-discovery. During that whole process, what I decided to do was instead of thinking, This is what I want to do next, I would have conversations with as many humans as I could. There was no agenda other than, ‘Tell me why you love your job. Tell me what you love about the day-to-day of your role at this company.' I started to learn that people who loved their jobs the most had a sense of agency that they got to access on a daily basis. And more importantly, they were in roles where they felt like they were utilizing their strengths on a daily basis. And I had come to a place where a lot of the friction I experienced in finance . . . I was good enough at my job where I could have 100% been happy if I had stayed there and pivoted companies once. However, I decided to figure out what were my strengths and where can I best express them? And during this time, the SOTO method was something that I'd always come back to.” Hilary says, “It's such a powerful exercise of just saying out loud, ‘What is holding me back from taking that next step?'” Join us to learn more.  Contact Hilary Website: https://www.sotomethod.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/sotomethod/ Linked In: https://www.linkedin.com/company/the-soto-method Credits: This podcast was produced by the following amazing team:  John Biethan, President of Imagine Podcasting  Sam De Santo, Creative Director  Rye Taylor, Podcast Design Strategist & Producer  Alan Meaney, Audio Engineer  Meg McCarley, Brand Designer & Social Media Manager  Raejan Noh, Content Writer  Jennifer Harshman, Content Writer  Aaron Boykin, Musician & Artist (Get updates about Aaron's music via Instagram)

What do you do when you've exceeded your wildest dreams? In the case of Elena Armijo, who grew up in Texas dreaming of an opera career, you get honest. She was traveling the world and performing at the top of her game, and yet feeling totally depleted, overwhelmed and unhappy. It was time to take a fearless inventory – which Elena did with the help of a life coach. Through the process of uncovering Elena's most authentic skills and interests they also uncovered the fact that coaching was her calling. It's been eight years now and she hasn't looked back! Today Elena's successful practice focuses on bringing her creative perspective to some decidedly non-creative fields, like tech or finance. She works with high-achieving leaders who are feeling stuck or in need of career redirection. Using a range of modalities, Elena helps reignite passion and focus clients on the journey ahead. Solopreneurs especially benefit from team support – but first have to blow up the myths about going it alone. You'll hear Elena's top tips for anyone feeling burned out or constantly overwhelmed, starting with the simple act of pausing, taking a breath. Her unique approach to coaching not only incorporates a deep connection with creativity and empathy but also invites us to explore the kind of sustained commitment that is truly transformational. In an exciting new development, Elena has formed the C-Suite Collective, a group of coaches and other healers working in a range of modalities to foster not only optimal performance but also a holistic sense of fulfillment, connection and integration over the long term, within the workplace and beyond. Elena has poured all the high-octane smarts and creativity that drove her international opera career into a powerful coaching methodology uniquely her own. Click here if you'd like to learn more about this entrepreneurial dynamo and the C-Suite Collective online network she has brought to life. You can also find Elena's podcast, In a Manner of Speaking, here. Click here to listen to, rate and review this or previous She Turned Entrepreneur episodes. Here are key takeaways from the conversation:· Even when you've captured the gold and managed to reach your ultimate dream status, it's important to listen if a voice in your head says it's no longer the right fit.· Stay open. You can't predict where wisdom will show up – from whom, how or at what moment!· Is fear a secret driver in your life? Coaching can help to unblock false beliefs and uncover assumptions that do not serve.· You are not necessarily predisposed to coach in an area where you have previous career experience. To the contrary, coaches are often more effective (and less bogged down by personal history) working with people in completely different professions.· Feeling overwhelmed? Slow way, way down. You can't uncover problems until you secure a little quiet amidst the noise.· Solopreneurs should not operate solo. Assemble a team of trusted advisors, paid and unpaid, who can support and extend your goals. Don't go it alone! Here's a quick look into the episode:· How Elena became a licensed appraiser at the age of 17 – an entrepreneurial stroke of genius on her father's part that has resonated in her ventures ever since.· Even in the pursuit of her opera career, Elena brought a good dollop of pragmatism, acquiring a teaching credential as a backup should her singing not pay the bills.· With her career soaring, Elena was on the road for 10 months of the year. She was seeing the world and living out her fantasy – until burnout set in. It was time to reassess and ultimately to make a change course.· While working with a coach, trying to figure out her next professional steps, Elena fell in love with the industry itself. That was eight years ago and she's been loving her coaching career ever since.· When fate comes knocking: About the unexpected encounter with a life coach that (despite her initial skepticism) unblocked and opened an entirely new path forward.· What drew Elena to coaching (not what you might assume). · Elena fell in love foremost with coaching methodology, the logical framework within which to exercise empathy and unblock limiting beliefs.· Elena has uncovered a gift for coaching professionals in non-creative industries, to whom she brings a completely different perspective that often has been missing.· The common points of entry for Elena's coaching clients:o I'm unhappy and have to shift something – now!o A toxic culture.o A chronic work-life balance issue.o A sense that something bigger is out there but not fully in focus.· Elena delights in her clients' “aha” moments, which offer so much “spaciousness” and “joy.” It's transformational.· Actionable tips for entrepreneurs who feel undervalued, overwhelmed or unfulfilled:o Slow way down. Take a deep breath. Show up late or cancel a meeting. Look three weeks out and commit to one full day off – no matter what.o Find a supportive resource. Don't let cost or time be a deterrent to finding a coach or mentor. There are all kinds of models and price points.o Change the narrative! Recognize that no one gets anywhere all alone. · The ways in which Elena works:o Mostly one-to-one coaching.o Workshops or group coaching with companies.· The C-Suite Collective is a boutique agency offering the services of a variety of coaches and healers working in different modalities. They also offer deliberative and committed programming in support of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion and other workplace issues.· Enjoy Elena's podcast: In a Manner of Speaking. On the second segment of The Collective Corner, Elena Armijo is joined by the beautiful Bebuo Ewa and Hillary Hittner. Bebuo's name means “persevere,” which is exactly what she has done and what she is passionate about helping others do by engaging in transformational leadership. Hillary is an inclusive leader who is committed to creating an empathetic space so that everyone can be courageous and own their leadership. These ladies cover topics like DEI and vulnerability, offer insights on how you can engage in self-care when faced with hard conversations, and share the ways they have walked their clients through conflict, in order to avoid burnout. According to Bebuo, love is the best way to avoid burnout: “I bring a ton of love as a defense mechanism to compensate for all of the experienced anger and hate that comes towards me.” Bebuo is eager to launch her new 5-month program, the Executive Playground Experience, which encapsulates her approach to hard conversations. Through her program, she will offer leadership coaching, group coaching, DEIB work, and a special wellness weekend. As Hillary explains, her own passion to help others has been burning for as long as she can remember: “I was always looking for the person who was maybe not inside the group and how to bring them into the group. So I was always looking to see who might be, for lack of a better word… the underdog, or the person who might not be getting the spotlight, who might not see their own greatness.” Now, she is launching a new round of her Inclusive Leadership Mastermind for women, which will cover aspects of race, inclusive leadership, and more. This is a question that has saturated much of the conversation surrounding company culture. Contrary to popular belief, creating the culture you want is not a one-size-fits-all endeavor. Instead, it requires you to take a good look at four distinct areas and adjust accordingly in order to begin creating a culture of belonging. As the founder of the C-Suite Collective, I realized that we have SO MUCH gold on our platform and we want to share it with the world. Twice a month, we will be bringing you a conversation around leadership from the viewpoint of coaches, specifically the ones on our team, to amplify the conversations we are having with clients around the world. For the first The Collective Corner, we have fantastic coaches Stephanie River and Sebastian Little. Stephanie is all about helping high-performers lay down their armor and tap into their vulnerability, so they can live and work courageously. Sebastian's focus is on causing disruption by helping others dive into the mess, so they can optimize culture, close performance gaps, and unlock leadership potential. Together, they talk about the power of being in the mess of life to achieve more and the importance of vulnerability in order to create belonging. Through experiences with their clients, they share insight on how you can create deeper connections within your organization, and how you can enhance your leadership through relationships and authentic communication. As Sebastian powerfully said, “When we can recognize the superpowers in ourselves and in other people, we elevate everybody together.” Additionally, Stephanie and Sebastian highlight the 75 Slow Challenge, a 75-day program they created to help you go farther and move faster by slowing down. Too often, as Stephanie notes, “People move fast to avoid the mess.” Through their program, they hope to help people slow down, embrace the mess, and move forward in authenticity. The Compassionate Leadership Interview
Elena Armijo, supporting women in the workplace

The Compassionate Leadership Interview

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 24, 2022 28:34

Elena Armijo is a Certified Coach, Dare to Lead Facilitator, and founder of the C-Suite Collective, an organisation that supports women in the workplace. Elena started out as an opera singer. Music was a major element of the culture in Las Cruces, Texas, where she grew up. A masters degree in vocal performance was followed by a career singing opera internationally in her 20s and early 30s. She switched careers after a period of 4 years during which she spent 10 months a year on the road, and was in danger of becoming burnt out.  Her relationships were suffering. She enlisted a coach to help her take stock. She came to question some of her motives for her choice of vocation up until that point. The experience of working with a coach was pivotal to her, and she resolved to qualify as a coach herself. Elena contends that we need more women in positions of power because they bring a sense of empathy and compassion. It's not that men don't have these qualities, but the tradition of male leadership, particularly in the US, is one of power dynamics and control. Men and women have things to teach one another. For example, from the men that have mentored Elena, she has learnt to find her voice and stand up for herself. Elena maintains that “high-achieving women are under-supported in the workplace at every level”: because they are one in a sea of many they don't often get their needs met. For example, they may need flexibility around parenting, maternity leave, or emotional bandwidth generally. They need supporting from a different perspective. The same HR package can't be expected to work for everyone. Initially the pandemic exacerbated the situation that women face. In dual-income families it was often the woman who gave up her position in order to home school. However, after two years of the pandemic, a more nuanced conversation is emerging in relation to needs and support. Elena believes excellence in supporting women is characterised by a culture in which women are free to say what is on their minds, where shame is surfaced, and where mental health issues, including incipient burnout, are addressed as they emerge. Coaching can play a key role in this. The first stage of putting such a culture in place is a diagnostic one, using 360 appraisals, and referring to exit interviews. Shifting the culture is a long-term endeavour, starting with the C-suite. Concerning job interviews, Elena says “now is a beautiful time to ask questions, and remember that when you are being interviewed you are also interviewing the other person.” Becoming a Dare to Lead Facilitator was “a really beautiful moment.” Elena says that Brene Brown has created a common language to discuss things openly [shame, guilt, vulnerability, authenticity] that were formerly rarely spoken of. Elena's proudest achievement in her career as a coach is in “serving marginalised people that get to see possibility for the first time.” (And as an opera singer, singing at Carnegie Hall.) Her biggest mistake as a rookie coach was to try to go too deep too soon with a senior executive. He wasn't feeling ready to be so vulnerable, and he fired her. They later apologised to one another. It taught Elena the difference between being with people and pushing people. On her journey, Elena was inspired by Michael Madden, her first boss after her opera career. He gave her the opportunity to build what was next for her, and encouragement. To aspiring leaders, Elena would recommend the Dare to Lead and Unlocking Us podcasts, both hosted by Brene Brown. Also anything by Simon Sinek, and ‘I Feel Awful: Chronicles of Leadership' by Christine Sachs. One of her favourite books on leadership is ‘The Culture Code' by Daniel Coyle. Elena adopts an in-the-moment approach to self-care, asking herself each morning what she needs that day. Sometimes that can be a cup of tea, or it may be a walk with her dogs, yoga, meditation or working out. For her it's part of “regrowing the muscle...

Elena Armijo joins Rosie to discuss acknowledging and facing your fears. Elena offers in-depth and customized executive programs for high performers who are at the top of their respective fields.  She grew up in New Mexico and currently lives in New Jersey. She holds a B.M. of Music Education from New Mexico State University and an M.M. in Vocal Performance from the University of Washington. She was introduced to opera at the New Mexico State University. Through her twenties she traveled the world singing on stages everywhere and met different people and experienced situations she would not have encountered had she stayed in New Mexico. Her opera career spanned ten years. Rosie asks Elena how she uses her opera experiences in her coaching and why she is a coach. Feeling burned out is what led her to seek a change. She was signing non-stop for four years straight. She shares she felt incredibly lucky and grateful for the singing career she created but also lonely and miserable. Guilt plagued her and she hid it. Elena shares she hired a coach and through her work with her coach discovered she built this amazing career from a sense of proving - her worth to her parents, community and herself. It's simply not true that working really really hard is the only way to feel safe, loved and respected. When she realized this she knew she had to change her story. She describes participating in a transformational program about transforming yourself from the inside out. Elena shares through this program she basically fell in love with herself!  Rosie affirms that Elena came to her journey facing her fears. Rosie believes that as business owners you get the best out of your life when you face your fears. The courageous part is that the end result is more meaningful than what that fear means right now. Rosie circles back around to what Elena said about falling in love with herself and notes that it is such a powerful tool. Elena shares that for her it was breaking down some of the things she watched her mother, grandmother and great grandmother model. Through self love she's learned she needs to take care of herself first such as getting 8 hours of sleep, walking her dog or going on a hike. She gives to herself before she takes care of anyone else.  As women, we are not taught to do this. Elena notes that not taking care of you is doing a disservice not only to you but those around you. They don't get the best version of you. Elena believes self love is taking care of yourself at a level that allows you to  experience your life deeply instead of just working or being here to get through your life. Elena shares her path to coaching happened because she fell in love with something as much as she loved music. Having something that you love actually be the thing you step into fully has created everything for her over the past 8 years for her. She attributes her success to consistency and practicing some of the same techniques she used as an entrepreneur in the opera world. What she loves is bringing a creative brain into coaching particularly in areas of business she knows nothing about. She reminds people in these spaces that they are creative human beings and that there are other ways of thinking.  Initially, Elena's biggest challenge was letting go of the imposter syndrome. Her current challenge as a six-figure business woman is to really own what she has created and step into this leveling up in her life. Old stories do resurface around guilt and did she work hard enough. Elensa shares she recognizes the old stories and has made friends with them. Most importantly, she doesn't let them make decisions for her! Rosie closes by thanking Elena for sharing her story and a quote from John Ship she included in her book, “Perseverance is stubbornness with a purpose.”    #Self-care #Coaching #Opera #Mindset #CertifiedCoach #facingfears   Elena Armijo Website  │   LinkedIn  │   Facebook  │   Instagram

The mainstream idea of work-life balance is great, but it's not necessarily attainable. Why? Well, the traditional idea of work-life balance can be static. It doesn't fit everyone's personalities or everyone's desired schedules. Some people do not want to work on Mondays or Fridays; some people prefer working at the office, while others want to spend more time at home. Everyone's idea of work-life balance is different. The trick is figuring out what that looks like—on your terms. In her Weekly Coaching Tip, Elena Armijo shares three steps we can follow to create balance in our lives. In her interview, Elena talks with entrepreneur and Director of Coaching for Luscious Mother, Kristin Baker, who encourages mothers to create balance on their own terms. Especially after the chaos of 2020, it's easy to slip into a scarcity mindset where we are frantically trying to ensure that we have enough, that our clients are served well, and that we have a Plan B if everything falls apart again. However, this scarcity mindset keeps us from so much in life. Instead of having a scarcity mindset - or going to the opposite extreme and forcing ourselves to have the perspective of “Everything's fine” - it's important to focus on the vision we have for our lives, so we remain grounded. In her Weekly Coaching Tip, Elena Armijo discusses how to shift from a scarcity mindset, so we can have a more balanced outlook. In her interview segment, Elena speaks with vocal coach, pianist, conductor, educator, and the new artistic director of the San Francisco Opera Center, Carrie-Ann Matheson. These two powerhouse female leaders and musicians originally met when Elena came to Carrie-Ann for vocal coaching at the Metropolitan Opera, and they instantly connected. In this conversation, Carrie-Ann shares how she became part of the music world, the ways she has taken ownership of her gifts, the power music has to connect people, and her mission to empower others to own who they are. Why do we people please? We want to make everyone happy. We want to help them and we want to be accommodating, even at the expense of ourselves. It's vital that we sacrifice for others, but if we are kind and selfless in order to be liked? Well, that's manipulation. We all want to be loved, but we must be loved for who we really are. In her Weekly Coaching Tip, Elena provides crucial examples so we can determine if we have fallen into the trap of people-pleasing. In her interview, Elena Armijo talks with the amazing litigator turned leadership coach, entrepreneur, and development professional Zoe Paliare. Zoe's fiery personality, strong convictions, and giving spirit make her a powerful champion for social justice.
