Why did Henry David Thoreau care so much about pencils—and why did some phone numbers keep ringing long after they were disconnected? In this episode of The Box of Oddities, Kat and Jethro wander into two stories that shouldn't be connected… but somehow are. First, we look at the surprising industrial legacy of Henry David Thoreau, long before Walden Pond. As a young man working in his family's pencil business, Thoreau applied chemistry, precision, and quiet rebellion to fix America's worst pencils—changing how graphite was processed, how pencils were graded, and why most pencils are still yellow today. It's a story about innovation, independence, and how financial stability made room for deep thinking… and eventually, deliberate living. Then, the episode takes a darker turn. During the 1960s and 70s, people across the U.S. reported receiving phone calls from businesses that had been closed—sometimes for decades. Funeral homes. Pharmacies. Local shops. Callers insisted they had just spoken to someone on the line. Engineers found nothing. Phone companies found no active service. The FCC investigated. No explanation stuck. What emerged instead was something stranger: the idea of telecom afterimages—echoes of human habit lingering in old copper wire. Conversations without ghosts. Voices without intent. Systems that didn't quite know how to forget. This episode explores how infrastructure remembers, how absence isn't always clean, and why the most unsettling stories are often the quietest ones—ordinary conversations that shouldn't exist, but somehow do. Renaissance English History Podcast: A Show About the Tudors
When Henry VIII died at Whitehall Palace in January 1547, England faced a dangerous moment. His heir was nine years old, power was about to shift, and the death of a king had to be handled with extreme care. In this video, we follow Henry VIII from his deathbed through one of the most elaborate royal funerals of the sixteenth century. We look at how his body was prepared, why his burial was delayed, how the funeral procession moved from Whitehall to Windsor, and what those towering candle-filled hearses actually were. Along the way, we examine one of the most enduring stories associated with Henry's death - the claim that his coffin burst open at Syon Abbey - and why that story almost certainly isn't true. We also explore Henry's plans for a monumental tomb and a perpetual chantry at St George's Chapel, Windsor, and why neither was ever completed. Despite the scale of his funeral, Henry VIII ended up buried without a visible monument, his vault unmarked for centuries. In this episode, I talk about the part of grief that doesn't fit the mold—the way loss makes you different, and how few people truly understand the way we navigate the world afterward. There's an unexpected empowerment that comes from owning that difference. From letting go of how grief should look. From stopping the need to be understood. And from building a life after loss in the way you need to, not the way others expect. If you've ever felt like a misfit in your grief, about how you're doing this and am looking for guidance on owning it, this one is for you. I'm sharing something deeply personal. January is often filled with talk of fresh starts and motivation — but real life doesn't always follow that script. Over the last few weeks, my family has been living through the realities of dementia, loss, and grief, and I wanted to speak honestly about what that has meant for my health, my mindset, and my relationship with food. This episode isn't about perfection. It's about compassion, steadiness, and choosing not to abandon yourself when life feels overwhelming. In this episode, I talk about: Living through dementia and the loss of my dad The emotional weight of care, advocacy, and grief Why binge eating didn't return — even during intense stress Letting go of shame around weight gain Gentle, realistic intentions instead of pressure How creativity supports me right now Why health still matters — even (and especially) in grief If you've experienced dementia, loss, or a season where everything feels heavier than usual, I hope this episode helps you feel less alone. We begin this week in 1970's Sardinia, where a quiet, deeply devout teenage girl began to wake up every night at exactly 3:00 a.m., convinced something terrible was standing next to her bed… watching her… and waiting to enter her. Then we head to Christmas Day, 1929, when a well-liked North Carolina farmer committed the unspeakable. Has it spawned paranormal activity? Then we find ourselves visiting the same house, ten years apart, both times the home is for sale and empty... or is it? Lastly, a sweet, sad and comforting tale of a couple so deeply connected, not even death can keep them apart. Do you want to get all of our episodes a WEEK early, ad free? In 1933 when a young, London inventor died under suspicious circumstances, his two surviving brothers turned to the talents of spiritualist mediums in the hopes of finding some answers to the many questions they had following the wholly satisfying inquest. Over a period of six months, the two men sat for several well known mediums, but by the end of it all, were given no hard answers to any of the bigger matters; Exactly who had been with him at the time of his death, and how had it come about? If anything, they were only asked a new question; Were any of the details given by the mediums to be trusted at all?SOURCES Gay, Kathleen (1957). The case of Edgar Vandy.
