Liz LongleyTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Nashville based artist Liz Longley. In this episode, Liz and I chat about her being born & raised in Pennsylvania, not far from where Taylor grew up, and how there MUST be something in the water in that area! Then we get into some of the reasons behind her attending; as well as some of the thigs that she learned at The Berkley School of Music. We touch very briefly on her similarly brief NYC residence, before she packed her guitar and her song book, and headed for the much more apt Nashville. Of course, I get her to explain a musical concept that I only recently learned about, and it turns out that it is her favorite musicology term! Then we talk about her music. Liz has released SEVEN albums! I pepper her with questions about some of my favorites of her work, and the meaning behind them. Naturally, I ask her about her two Kickstarter campaigns. In 2012, Liz launched a Kickstarter campaign designed to help her finance a studio album. By the end of the campaign, she has raised 157% of her goal. The resulting record that she made, landed her a record deal with Sugar Hill Records! We discuss a bit of her time at that record company, and how her exit from it transpired. Sadly, when she left the record company, they had received & shelved her latest album. So, she turned once again, to her backers at Kickstarter. Her 2020 Kickstarter campaign had a goal to raise enough funds to PURCHASE the finished album from the record company. The campaign met the stated goal in the first 24 hours and went on to raise 333% of the financial goal; making that one of the biggest musician campaigns ever funded on the platform. She used the extra funds to create TWO more records! Liz was a blast to chat with, and she even let me play two of her songs that I absolutely love. PLUS, we get together to come up with an amazing offer for the listeners of this episode. Liz will send every listener a FREE CD EP (just pay shipping)! Click the link below to get that FREE CD! Make sure you follow her on all of the social medias, and check her website for tour dates near you. At the time of this recording, Liz was about 8.75 months pregnant with her second child. That baby was born less than 2 weeks ago! Congratulations Liz and welcome Connor to the world!Link to FREE CD (Just pay shipping)B) FSH Sales Page #1 — Liz Longley

In a deeply personal postcard from NPR's Emmanuel Akinwotu, we go the funeral of his venerated grandfather in Nigeria. It was a huge celebration of life, with music and dance. However, the family was confronted with extortion and exploitation at the gravesite. It's an all too common occurrence, one that amplifies the grief of many Nigerians. It's just a film standing in front of two podcasters asking them to take it lovingly apart and put it back together better. Notting Hill Year: 1999 Written by: Richard Curtis Directed by: Roger Michell Stars: Julia Roberts, Hugh Grant Show notes: We really get into this one - and for ‘this one' read Richard Curtis films in general and their male leads in particular. 26 years after its release there is much that is good about this film and also much to fix. If you would like to skip the plot summary for this month's film you can spool forward about 12 minutes into the episode. In this episode we mention the films: Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109831/) About Time (2013) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2194499/) Love Actually (2003) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0314331/) Going the Distance* (2010) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1322312/) Always Be My Maybe* (2019) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7374948/) The Idea of You* (2024) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9466114/) Pretty Woman (1990) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0100405/) And the TV series: Black Books (2000-2004) (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0262150/) *Films marked with an asterisk have previously been featured on the podcast. Correction: We said in the last episode that Hitch might be the only rom com that centres the heterosexual man's experience. For whatever reason we forgot that Notting Hill also does this. As does Four Weddings And A Funeral. And other Richard Curtis films. If you are interested to read more about what has been called Boarding School Syndrome, Nick Duffell's book The Making of Them is a good primer. On July 30, 1902, tens of thousands of mourners lined the streets of New York's Lower East Side to bid farewell to the city's chief rabbi, the eminent Talmudist Jacob Joseph. All went well until the procession crossed Sheriff Street, where the six-story R. Hoe and Company printing press factory towered over the intersection. Without warning, scraps of steel, iron bolts, and scalding water rained down and injured hundreds of mourners, courtesy of antisemitic factory workers. The police compounded the attack when they arrived on the scene; under orders from the inspector in charge, who made no effort to distinguish aggressors from victims, officers began beating up Jews, injuring dozens. To the Yiddish-language daily Forverts (Forward), the bloody attack on Jews was not unlike those that many Russian Jews remembered bitterly from the old country. But this was America, not Russia, and the Jewish community wasn't going to stand for such treatment. Fed up with being persecuted, New York's Jews, whose numbers and political influence had been growing, set a pattern for the future by deftly pursuing justice for the victims. They forced trials and disciplinary hearings, accelerated retirements and transfers within the corrupt police department, and engineered the resignation of the police commissioner. Scott D. Through the Lens of an Addict's Sister: Stephanie Balber | The Hopeaholics PodcastIn this powerful episode of The Hopeaholics Podcast, Stephanie Balber shares her emotional journey of growing up with a sister battling heroin and fentanyl addiction. She opens up about the pain, chaos, and heartbreak her family endured—from discovering her sister dealing drugs at her wedding to catching her using on Christmas night—and the toll it took on her as a sibling and daughter. Through Nar-Anon meetings, therapy, and hard-won self-awareness, Stephanie learned that her parents had become “addicted to her sister's addiction” and that healing required setting boundaries and finding her own peace. Turning her pain into purpose, she created a clothing brand inspired by resilience and recovery. This episode is a raw, honest look at addiction, family, and the courage it takes to heal out loud.#thehopeaholics #redemption #recovery #AlcoholAddiction #AddictionRecovery #wedorecover #SobrietyJourney #MyStory #Hope #wedorecover #treatmentcenter #natalieevamarieGET YOUR COMEBACK RAD MERCH HERE:https://www.instagram.com/c0mebackrad/?hl=enJoin our patreon to get access to an EXTRA EPISODE every week of ‘Off the Record', exclusive content, a thriving recovery community, and opportunities to be featured on the podcast. https://patreon.com/TheHopeaholics Go to www.Wolfpak.com today and support our sponsors. "We just want our daughter's remains returned so we can have some closure to our grief."On 15 August 2015, employees at the Mission Park Funeral Chapels North in San Antonio, TX closed up for the evening. They'd just held a service for a young woman named Julie Mott who had perished after a lifelong battle with cystic fibrosis. By 4:30 PM that Saturday, the doors were locked and the ADT alarm system was set. When staff returned to the facility the following morning, they were surprised to see that Julie's casket had been moved from an empty hallway and now rested in a strange position near an exit door. And inside the casket, there was nothing. Her remains were missing...Research by Ira RaiWriting by Amelia WhiteHosting & production by Micheal WhelanLearn more about this podcast at http://unresolved.meIf you would like to support this podcast, consider heading to https://www.patreon.com/unresolvedpod to become a Patron or ProducerBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/unresolved--3266604/support.

When Jesus Stopped a Funeral | Christ For YouText: Luke 7:11–17 | 16th Sunday after TrinityDescription:What happens when Jesus meets death head-on? In Luke 7, He stops a funeral, speaks life into the grave, and gives a grieving mother her son back. This sermon proclaims how Christ's compassion breaks through despair, how His Word conquers death, and how His resurrection gives hope to every believer facing loss. Text usTonight's installment brought us into the cool, aching sorrow of “Funeral Birds” by M. Rickert, a story that feels like a single long, haunted breath. Rickert's prose moves slow and deliberate, folding small, intimate details into an ever-widening sense of loss until the landscape itself seems to remember grief. The tale follows characters whose lives are quietly eroded by absence and memory; birds arrive and behave like elegies, ordinary things become uncanny, and the reader slides effortlessly from the domestic into the uncanny without a shove. It's not horror that screams—it's horror that lingers in the margins, in the sound of wings at dusk and in the way people carry the weight of what they cannot say aloud. The narrative's power is in its accumulation: a sequence of domestic fragments that, when stitched together, reveal an emotional logic as inevitable and terrible as a tide. Rickert is working in the small motions—gestures, rituals, a funeral procession, the way neighbors glance away—and those small motions swell into meaning. The atmosphere is elegiac rather than lurid; the fear Rickert conjures is the old kind, the one that sits beside you at the table and refuses to leave. Listeners who came expecting jump-scares will find something subtler and deeper: a slow, unavoidable ache that turns ordinary birds into portent and ordinary grief into something almost mythic.Tonally, the story fits the Halloween special not by offering gore or spectacle but by demonstrating another face of the season: the way endings gather around us like migrating flocks, how memory and mortality can coalesce into a kind of cold, beautiful terror. It's a night-walking story, best heard with the lights low and the windows shut, the kind that leaves you thinking about neighbors, about little civic rituals, and about how closely tenderness and menace can sit together. The emotional tail of the piece doesn't resolve into tidy catharsis; instead it leaves a residue—an image, a sound, a bird's cry—that will hang in the mind long after the episode ends. This was a beautifully restrained piece for tonight's run—quiet, aching, and precise—an invitation to sit with sorrow rather than outrun it. If you liked the atmosphere here, come back tomorrow for another night's offering; this series is built to show horror's many faces, from the grotesque to the heartbreakingly ordinary.Credits: This episode was produced by Mickie Eberz and narrated by Spring Heeled Jack (Anthony Landis). The story, “Funeral Birds,” is by M. Rickert. All original music for tonight's episode was written and performed by Empress.
