Vitiello, a New York native, is an internationally recognized sound artist and mainstay of the New York scene since his early days as a punk guitarist. He has been influenced by Nam June Paik, has collaborated with Scanner, Pauline Oliveros and Frances-Marie Utti. He is also an electronic musician and visual artist. And, according to Morrow, “an absolute Geiger Counter for places.” In 1999 he did a residency at the World Trade Center managing to capture the Towers's swaying in the wind and recorded the creaking and cracking of the building's skeleton. He has produced countless recordings on various labels such as Sub Rosa and has had many solo exhibitions that combine sound, installations, photos and drawings at museums and galleries and has been part of many Group shows including Soundings: Contemporary Score at MOMA, the Whitney and the Sydney Biennale. Vitiello serves as a professor at Virginia Commonwealth University in the Kinetic Imaging department. I met Stephen in the 1980s. We worked together on Nam Jun Paik's Zapping for Swatch watch. Then on some of Paik's soundtracks, including "Did George Sand Kill Chopin." Stephen curated the show, New Sounds New York, for the Kitchen in New York. It included the New York unveiling of my patended 3D soundcube with series of commissioned works including his most evocative, “Cinematic, With Crashing Roof,” one of 12 designed for the cube by an array of artists. MOD episodes have no shelf-life or expiration date. Our focus is principled - always happening now - so each episode reflects the fluidity and immediacy of the current events we share. Sobriety is sanity from any compulsion. Emotional sobriety is sane living. Circumstances are consequences offering a textbook perspective on how well our thinking is relating to the steady, unshakeable, ever-present nature of reality and truth. Conflicted thoughts cause inner conflict which is a natural guidance system, like pain, to draw attention to what is wrong. Our essence is the basis for mental stability. Essence is essential and does not change nor can it be anywhere other than where, when, how and that we are - now. Ignoring this is to claim obsessive distractions can dominate or obscure reality when it is only obscured thoughts we suffer. To think Reality and Truth can be fought is insane. An Absolute nature bears no burden and does not change whatsoever when mistaken thoughts run wild trying to control reality. Our experience bears the impact we create. Thoughts are not at fault for inner conflict, emotional turmoil, or mental anguish since we freely choose them including those that have us think we are condemned by them. Mistaken thoughts cause misgivings. Pain is a built-in Geiger Counter measuring toxicity in our body's ecosystem including the redundancy of echoing thoughts. Denial acts like psychic anesthesia while any resulting numbness is evidence of pain, not its absence. Ignoring is ignorance creating the seeming inability to respond or adjust to what is actually happening so automatic reactions are thought to be our only option. Misreading our body language creates functional illiteracy. Thinking all or some things happening are not happening is insane once thought of as reality - since things are always happening as they are happening. Con-fused experience is a possibility not reality. Obsessive thoughts are excuses trying to deny responsibility. Denial may offer seeming relief while guaranteeing growing pains. Temporarily induced relief is not real even as we struggle to think of it as reality. Pretending problems aren't problems is how problems grow. Problems seem impossibly out of control until they dissolve by facing them honestly. Denial of reality does not exist in reality but in delusion - thoughts imagined real: like lies, ego and addiction. It is impossible to let go of what does not exist just as it is impossible for an Absoute nature can let go. Lies threaten human survival just as addiction kills its host by claiming to be its savior. When enough is never enough words no longer have any purpose, nor reason. This internal betrayal creates present traumatic stress reflecting disordered thoughts posing as reality. Thinking we are thinking only what we think we are thinking is a mistake. Experiencing effects is the revelation of the thoughts we cause. Thinking we have nothing to do with insanity has us imagine thoughts happen to us, having a life of their own distinct and separate from our experience and existence. Feeling alone is feeling a thought with no basis in reality. Victim mentality is seductive to the sick idea that we are irresponsible for what we are doing. Thinking we have any hope or chance of solving problems we claim to have nothing to do with creates hopelessness since we are posing as irresponsible for the effect's cause. We are free to think whatever we want. We want what we think - and so can think again anytime - even when we think we cannot. .contact@mentalobsession.com

Everybody wanted a piece of champion trainer Leon Macdonald when he saddled his final runners at Morphettville on July 29th, and we were on the list. We caught up with the SA racing legend a few days later and got him started on a sentimental journey. He begins by looking back on an emotional final day at the scene of some of his greatest moments. He says an on course video tribute tested his emotions. Leon was philosophical about a winless final day. He pays tribute to the young man who'll be filling his shoes at French Cotton Lodge, son-in-law Andrew Gluyas. The one Adelaide major to elude Leon was the historic Goodwood Hcp. He talks of his narrow defeat with Another Award in May. The former trainer acknowledges his long and successful association with veteran jockey Jason “Stubby” Holder. Leon talks at length about Dalasan, the horse who deserved a Gr 1 win but had to settle for four placings at the elite level. He talks of Dalasan's promising half sister. The veteran recalls a freakish trackwork accident in 2021 which left him with a broken hip. Leon says he was shocked and humbled in 2014 when inducted into the Australian Racing Hall Of Fame. He talks of his uncle George Macdonald who greatly influenced his early career. Leon talks of his first Gr 1 winner French Cotton after whom his Morphettville stables were named. Macdonald talks of another early Gr 1 win with Mine Gold in the Australasian Oaks. He reminisces about his uncle Ab Macdonald who trained outstanding filly Farmer's Daughter in the 1960's. Leon talks of the job he had before becoming a horse trainer. He wasn't cut out for his job with the Electricity Trust of South Australia. He talks of a long and happy association with owner/breeder and successful businessman Harry Perks. Leon pays Gold Guru the tribute he deserves. He has no doubt the son of Geiger Counter was the best horse he trained. Second only to Gold Guru as a Macdonald favourite was the ageless Umrum. He loved the dual Gr 1 winner. Leon was a trailblazer in recognising the talents of female jockeys. He pays tribute to riders like Ruth McMillan, Clare Lindop and Raquel Clark. He looks back on a memorable Victoria Derby win with despised outsider Rebel Raider. Leon remembers the deeds of bonny mare Southern Speed who brought him a win in the coveted Caulfield Cup. The former trainer talks of Gr 1 winning filly Go Indy Go. He speaks with affection of the multiple stakes winner Dilly Dally. He pays tribute to one of Dilly Dally's owners, his wife Pam who was always the steadying influence in the Macdonald Racing operation. Leon has fond memories of the tough filly Augusta Proud who gave him a memorable win in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic. He makes special mention of his daughters Sue and Christine. Sue is married to Andrew Gluyas, and Christine is the wife of former ace race caller Terry McAuliffe. It's a laid back chat with a true legend of South Australian racing.

After the completion of World War 2, the nations of the world polarize into an ideological standoff. The existence of atomic bombs changes the geopolitical realities of governments and warfare. The threat of nuclear annihilation smolders for the decades of the Cold War, and the nations of the West struggle to create lasting world peace. The Atomic Bomb podcast describes the history leading to the discovery of the atomic bomb, as well as its role in World War 2. We also examine the science behind the understanding of the atomic nucleus, how it enables the release of atomic energy, as well as the design and function of nuclear reactors and nuclear weapons. We follow the stories of some of the scientists involved – their discoveries, tragedies, and adventures. Lastly, we consider the geopolitical impact that nuclear weapons have made on the world.Credits and Licensing Information:Written, presented, and edited by Lane VotapkaAdditional edits by Gary VotapkaOriginal logo and banner by Inova Enterprise. If you enjoyed this podcast, please consider subscribing or making a donation at https://buymeacoffee.com/lvotapka or by engaging in discussions at my Thinkspot page: https://www.thinkspot.com/forum_type/lane-votapka/author/4WtDOo/author/4WtDOo.Music:"Americana", “Black Vortex”, “Crusade”, “Eastern Thought”, “Egmont Overture”, “Evening Melodrama”, “Fanfare for Space”, “Five Armies”, “Full On”, “Gaslamp Funworks”, “Gregorian Chant”, “Hero Down”, “Industrial Revolution”, “Oppressive Gloom”, “Return of Lazarus”, “Stormfront”, “Tempting Secrets”, “The Descent”, “The Pyre”, “The Sky of Our Ancestors”, “Thunderbird”, “Unlight” by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Sound Effects:“Atomic Explosion and Sub Rumble”GowlerMusic (https://freesound.org/s/265459/)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 Unportedhttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/legalcode“Radio Noise 2”ERH (https://freesound.org/s/30335/)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 Unportedhttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/legalcode“Super 8 mm projector”Eelke (https://freesound.org/s/256647/)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 Unportedhttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/legalcode“Bullroarer Flyby”Benboncan (https://freesound.org/s/91384/)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 Unportedhttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/legalcode“Windy farming land NL 160310_0872”klankbeeld (https://freesound.org/s/339699/)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 Unportedhttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/legalcode“Bf-109 Flyby”Fight2FlyPhoto (https://freesound.org/s/143558/)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 Unportedhttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/legalcode“ModelAHorn”daveincamas (https://freesound.org/s/43801/)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 Unportedhttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/legalcode“Geiger Counter”johnnythesalesman (https://freesound.org/s/423291/)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 Unportedhttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/legalcode“Applause 1”FunWithSound (https://freesound.org/s/381355/)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 Unportedhttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/legalcode“Gun-Pistol(one shot)”Shades (https://freesound.org/s/37236/)Licensed under Creative Commons: Sampling Plus 1.0 Licensehttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/sampling+/1.0/legalcode“Crowd Screaming, A”InspectorJ (https://freesound.org/s/421852/)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 Unportedhttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/legalcode“Alien Breath 2”FiveBrosStopMosYT (https://freesound.org/s/537023/)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 Unportedhttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/legalcode“hissing_gas”Taberius (https://freesound.org/s/327534/)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 Unportedhttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/legalcode“dot matrix printer”azumarill (https://freesound.org/s/485468/)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 Unportedhttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/legalcode“thunder”xerana (https://freesound.org/s/199638/)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 Unportedhttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/legalcode
The Empire of Japan arose, first to combat colonialism, and later to spread its own dominance over East Asia and the Pacific. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Japanese and the Allies engage in cataclysmic conflicts across the Pacific. Finally, the Japanese Empire is cornered and surrounded in its home islands. Allied leadership must choose whether to begin a drawn-out assault and invasion of Japan, or to conduct a nuclear strike in the hopes that the Empire will surrender. The Atomic Bomb podcast describes the history leading to the discovery of the atomic bomb, as well as its role in World War 2. With the outbreak of war and the entry of the United States into World War 2, Leo Szilard and Albert Einstein write a letter to President Franklin Roosevelt, detailing the possibility of nuclear bomb technology. The president heeds their warning, and orders the military to begin the Manhattan project, a massive scientific and industrial effort led by the seasoned physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer. The successful Trinity test proves the immense power and destructive potential of the nuclear bomb. The Atomic Bomb podcast describes the history leading to the discovery of the atomic bomb, as well as its role in World War 2. The nations of the world mobilize, and the Great War (World War 1) breaks out – and the science of mass, industrialized killing is perfected. The subject of chemistry is wielded by Fritz Haber to make poison gas. After the Great War, the bitterness of defeat sows the seeds for another world war, and young Adolf Hitler forms his ideology. The Atomic Bomb podcast describes the history leading to the discovery of the atomic bomb, as well as its role in World War 2. In the middle of the 20th century, the combination of scientific brilliance and a globe-spanning war produced weapons so powerful that a single bomb could flatten an entire city. The origin of this technology takes us back into history, to Leo Szilard's first conception of a nuclear chain reaction, and even further back, when scientists weren't sure whether atoms even existed. Once atoms, and all their various parts, were discovered, great scientists like Ernest Rutherford, JJ Thompson, Niels Bohr, and Albert Einstein peeled back layers of the mysteries of the atomic and subatomic realm to reveal the immense energy that lies within. If you enjoyed this podcast, please consider subscribing or making a donation at https://buymeacoffee.com/lvotapka or by engaging in discussions at my Thinkspot page: https://www.thinkspot.com/forum_type/lane-votapka/author/4WtDOo/author/4WtDOo.Music:"Americana", “Black Vortex”, “Crusade”, “Eastern Thought”, “Egmont Overture”, “Evening Melodrama”, “Fanfare for Space”, “Five Armies”, “Full On”, “Gaslamp Funworks”, “Gregorian Chant”, “Hero Down”, “Industrial Revolution”, “Oppressive Gloom”, “Return of Lazarus”, “Stormfront”, “Tempting Secrets”, “The Descent”, “The Pyre”, “The Sky of Our Ancestors”, “Thunderbird”, “Unlight” by Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/Sound Effects:“Atomic Explosion and Sub Rumble”GowlerMusic (https://freesound.org/s/265459/)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 Unportedhttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/legalcode“Radio Noise 2”ERH (https://freesound.org/s/30335/)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 Unportedhttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/legalcode“Super 8 mm projector”Eelke (https://freesound.org/s/256647/)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 Unportedhttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/legalcode“Bullroarer Flyby”Benboncan (https://freesound.org/s/91384/)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 Unportedhttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/legalcode“Windy farming land NL 160310_0872”klankbeeld (https://freesound.org/s/339699/)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 Unportedhttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/legalcode“Bf-109 Flyby”Fight2FlyPhoto (https://freesound.org/s/143558/)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 Unportedhttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/legalcode“ModelAHorn”daveincamas (https://freesound.org/s/43801/)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 Unportedhttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/legalcode“Geiger Counter”johnnythesalesman (https://freesound.org/s/423291/)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 Unportedhttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/legalcode“Applause 1”FunWithSound (https://freesound.org/s/381355/)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 Unportedhttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/legalcode“Gun-Pistol(one shot)”Shades (https://freesound.org/s/37236/)Licensed under Creative Commons: Sampling Plus 1.0 Licensehttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/sampling+/1.0/legalcode“Crowd Screaming, A”InspectorJ (https://freesound.org/s/421852/)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 Unportedhttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/legalcode“Alien Breath 2”FiveBrosStopMosYT (https://freesound.org/s/537023/)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 Unportedhttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/legalcode“hissing_gas”Taberius (https://freesound.org/s/327534/)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 Unportedhttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/legalcode“dot matrix printer”azumarill (https://freesound.org/s/485468/)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 Unportedhttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/legalcode“thunder”xerana (https://freesound.org/s/199638/)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 Unportedhttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/legalcode
The science isn’t as certain as some scientists want you to think. There’s a theoretical limit to how old you can date things with carbon-14. The fact that we find it in every carbon source on earth, the planet cannot be more than one million years old according to the dating methods. Learn all about it with Rob and Joseph!

Surprise! Here’s another interview for ya’ll. We’re delighted to bring you this interview with the wonderful KateJane Garside. Well known for her staggering voice and stunning stage presence, KatieJane has been involved in a number of musical projects since the late 80s, most notably the garage punk outfit Daisy Chainsaw in the early 90s and ferocious noise rockers Queenadreena from 99 to 2010. She subsequently went on to form Ruby Throat with her life partner Chris Whittingham, a much more subtle neofolk affair, before marrying the noise and the folk together with their latest album under the name Liar, Flower, called Geiger Counter. We were lucky enough to catch KatieJane as she was on dry land, and she was kind enough to lend us a generous amount of her time so we could talk about her life and career. We cover everything from Daisy Chainsaw to the present day, digging into her life story, some of the things that make her tick as a musician and getting some pretty great tales in the process. This is one for the books so we hope you folk enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed recording it. We’re back next week with Mark’s choice of The Ugly Organ by Cursive.

KatieJane gained fame fronting British grunge band Daisy Chainsaw, left after their first full album but resumed the project under the name Queenadreena for four albums in the '00s, then partnered with Chris Whittingham in 2007 to live on a boat and play as the stripped-down Ruby Throat for four albums. That band has now become loud again and been re-christened Liar, Flower. We discuss "My Brain is Lit Like an Airport" and hear the title track from Geiger Counter (2020), then look back to "Hu'u" by Ruby Throat from Baby Darling Taporo (2017) and "Lesions In The Brain" by Lalleshwari (a one-off solo moniker) from Lullabies in a Glass Wilderness (2007). Ghost Cult scribe Duncan Evans chatted with music legend KatieJane Garside recently on the release of her new project, Liar, Flower, and her new release Geiger Counter (One Little Independent Records). You may know Garside from her immense career credits with groups such as Daisy Chainsaw, QueenAdreena, and more recently Ruby Throat. Far removed from her early rumblings, the wisened and more poetic chanteuse discussed her new album, the decision to recast the group under a new moniker with her partner Chris Whittingham, her many travels around the world living on a boat, mindfulness meditation, the music video for ‘i am sundress (she of infinite flowers)’, the care and creativity she takes for the expanded versions of Geiger Counter and much more. Purchase the album and keep up with all of KatieJane’s happenings at this link, and listen the chat below. Tom welcomes back returning guest co-fund manager Keith Watson of NCIM in London. He is responsible for their CQS Natural Resources Growth and Income plc, Geiger Counter, and Golden Prospect Precious Metals funds. They look for companies with successful management teams, with good projects and that have attractive valuations. He feels the broader commodity sector is at an extreme discount compared to general equity markets. They focus on safer jurisdictions but are willing to consider projects in other countries, particularly those with excellent government policies. Keith discusses their various funds and the advantages of each one. They were happy to have maintained the weightings in gold assets before and during the crisis. They are currently evaluating increasing their weightings for silver in their funds. Electronics demand for 5G electronics may increase the demand for silver. He is also optimistic about copper from continued need for electrification. Lastly, he discusses the outlook for uranium and the supply constraints caused by the lockdown. Keith says, "There is extreme potential for this sector to perform." KatieJane Garside’s journey into music is a lot different than most. Unless, of course, you know another artist who spent their formative years sailing the world, spending literally years at sea. Then it turns out that she was discovered by legenday producer Glyn Johns. Her first productive band, Daisy Chainsaw, resulted in Courtney Love calling her one of the original Riots Grrrls. From Daisy Chainsaw through Queen Adreena, her music was unmistakable. And even when she met her longtimetime partner Chris Whittingham and changed gears to a quieter sound with Ruby Throat, it was just as intense. Now KatieJane and Chris have plugged back in with Liar, Flower and combined those sounds into something really unique. Check out the new Liar, Flower album, Geiger Counter on One Little Indian. Follow her social media @garsidekatiejane. Follow us @PerformanceAnx. Subscribe, rate, review, share. I really want to make a terrible sailing pun right now, but I’ll stop myself while you check out the show with KatieJane Garside of Liar, Flower.

Jeff Keyzer (@MightyOhm) joined us to talk about consumer manufacturing, how to solder, and having a full time job and a kit company. Jeff's blog is on MightyOhm.com. The Geiger Counter kit is available atMightyOhm.com/geiger. The really, really useful Soldering Is Easy comic book isMightyOhm.com/soldercomic. At Valve, Jeff worked on the Steam Controller (hardware specs at bottom of the Valve page or for sale on Amazon). There is also a neat video showing the manufacturing automation in action. We mentioned Glowforge, Dan Shapiro was on episode 125 (and if you are going to buy one, please consider using our referral link!) Elecia and Chris have a Hakko FX-888 soldering iron. Jeff suggests Kester 186 flux which you can get in smaller-than-giant containers on eBay. No, not the pen on Amazon. Or maybe the MG Chemicals 835 (which is in little bottles on Amazon). Flux seems like a very personal thing.

And now, the conclusion...This is Part Two of the Exemplary DM's oh-so-meta two-part Cliffhanger Episode! How can you as a Dungeon Master take advantage of the dramatic mechanic of the cliffhanger in your campaign tonight? How can you avoid disappointment while preparing for excellence when setting your players up to maximum anticipation? This episode contains items six through ten of our very own tips for pulling off a Cliffhanger in your D&D session tonight!Bad cliffhangers may do one of these:Change the genre.Send the heroes back to medieval Japan.Introduce an unprepared-for permanent change.Bring back someone the players are already fucking sick and tired of, or a villain they literally just killed.Like Harry Potter. Cheat. Have Patrick Duffy walk into a showerSorry, your princess is in another castle.Railroad the players into a scripted action or reaction that they probably would not have otherwise done, robbing them of a decision.Remember, a cliffhanger is supposed to prepare the party for action, not spoil any action. You don't want to rip control away from players. Tailor the cliffhanger to each one of your characters. End of William's last game session, in which he cliffhangered each of the PC's. The players, who are underground hunting Drow, are traveling through a tunnel to find themselves overlooking a breeding ground for the spider queen spider's.Two of the players notice that the prize artifact of their tribe, missing for years, is embedded in the boss spider's head, serving as its power source. One of the players sees a figure across the room on the far wall, hiding in the shadows, and upon catching a glimpse of her face, realizes it is his long lost love interest.Another player receives a foreboding warning from her sentient artifact. And the final player's sight returns before the battle, just in time for him to open a long lost letter from his time travelling girlfriend, which contains a heart breaking goodbye and a character backstory-referencing warning... oooOOOOOoooohhhh....Now remember, ending a session on a cliffhanger is going to give the players lots of time to think about their reaction. When you reconvene, have your prep work done and your “yes, and” face on, because they may decide to go in a different direction from the one you were hoping. Be willing to be flexible enough to allow them to react.Use a cliffhanger at the beginning of the campaign, which changes the world and shocks the players, much like what happened at the beginning of the new JJ Abrams Star Trek movie, where Kirk's dad dies. Or similarly, when you use a cliffhanger at the end of a vignette, the PC's can discover the resolution of later on. This is pretty much the default use of a vignette.A cliffhanger is not something to be overused, because it can have some negative effects. For example, a cliffhanger can also be a big disappointment if on the return trip, you cheap out and “nerf” the action. (Have Patrick Duffy step out of the shower and say it was all a dream.) No Deus Ex Machina resolutions to your suspenseful conflict, such as Lord of the Rings Eagles sweeping all the dwarves away to safety, unless that was somehow set up or cool for other reasons. If you're afraid of how everybody is going to react, find a way to incorporate your post-cliffhanger goodness without letting them off easy or unrealistically defusing the danger. Put your "yes, and" face on, but don't let it destroy your tension or session. There's a balance. Don't be afraid to ask for a five minute break.Don't hit them too hard, too brutally, too fatal. For example, at the end of Star Trek II, the Wrath of Khan. Spock's dead, they have a funeral, “the most… human.” In the original version of the movie, it ended right there. The test audience reacted very negatively, it was too depressing. They revised the end of the movie to allow for the glimmer of hope that Spock's torpedo pod landed safely on Genesis.Gadgets of the Podcast:Encounter: The Rising Tide - in Christy's campaign, we dropped into an underground tunnel system and found the water rising. We knew only the encounter with an evil force would stop the tides from rising unnaturally. There are lots of ways you can use a "timer" mechanic like this.Character Concept: Grim Harding, the Pathfinder ninja assassin build and a master of stealth, unarmed combat and disguises, and friend to our previous concept submitted by Blair, Oni. A Casey at the Bat version of the ninja. Jon, Blair's friend, sent us a minifesto. From Jon: for the player in every DM, try the Dana Carvey Master of Disguise.Tee Shirt: D&D Character (Pretty Girl) T-shirt from Zazzle courtesy of Christine, just in time for Valentine's Day.Adventure Hook: The Mysterious Gift - the unexpected weapon/artifact/gadget that turns out to be a trick. Just be sure to give the players something for their eventual trouble. The cursed ring of inconvenient flatulence old school cursed item stuff. Perhaps it sends them on a quest for a cure/removal. Magical Item of the Podcast: The Geiger Counter/canary in West Virginia/Sting from The Hobbit - or your genre's similarly-functioning invisible hazard warning device. Greg's three-dimensional compass portal finder from Chad's current campaign, something to detect the rifts between planes.Player Tip: Don't be a dick … and you can avoid dickitu.de by… not forgetting your table your table etiquette. Lapses in D&D table etiquette could include - reading your phone, reading books on your phone, making a mess (equivalent of spilling the pot in poker), doing annoying things with fingernails, breaking people's things especially the host, drinking loudly, eating loudly, eating smelly stuff, living up to the template of Jerk, Douche, Idiot, and Loser (from season 1, episode 3), doing annoying things with toenails. One rule we always had growing up was that no player was never allowed to lie down, especially if you're sleepy, because you're going to fall asleep. DM Tip: Moons, Stars, Celestial Bodies, Calendars - Civ V uses the Mayan calendar instead of the BC/AD calendar when you play that civ. In Forgotten Realms, the moons had a mechanic for spellcasting. Not to mention lycanthrophy, full moon or new moon effects. Also, lighting effects can be significantly different at night in open terrain with or without a moon.“Stardate 91605.27” Few people can do that translation in their head, but that's not important. It's the very nature of the number that tells us the people in this story are more scientific and scientificker than we are. (That, and the spaceship.)From the beginning of the Gamma World 4e book: “The year is now 2162 (or 151, or 32,173, or Six Monkey Slap-Slap, depending on your point of view). It's been a hundred and fifty years since the Big Mistake, and the Earth is a very different place.”Googled this link to various D&D Calendar systems: http://home.earthlink.net/~duanevp/dnd/calendars.htmBig Thanks for music, once again big thanks to the Diablo String Orchestra, The Kobolds, our listener Chuck for the intro to the gadgets of the podcast jam, and mega-fan Joshua Bentley for voice-overs galore (@voiceofthebigjb).Right-click and Save-As below, or us the RSS feed built into this page.Mirror 1 (128kbps) (Oregon US) (42mb)Check us out on iTunes and give us some reviews and/or ratings and/or hurtful criticism! What do you think?Welcome all our new listeners to the family of ExemplaryDM! The British Hero Bulldog Drummond is a fictional character created by H. C. McNeile, as the hard boiled no nonsense-style detective. The stories followed Captain Hugh "Bulldog" Drummond, D.S.O., M.C., a wealthy former WWI officer of the Loamshire Regiment, who, after the war, spends his new-found leisure time as a private detective.Drummond is a proto-James Bond figure and was a muscular man with a group of followers who helped him in his adventures. They rounded up crooks and took them to a place only they knew and reformed them. Drummond and his men, the "Black Gang", beat the be jabbers out of the men till they learned their lesson and renounced crime. Join us as we listen to the adventures of this British Detective.
