It's hard to think of another songbook in Disney's oeuvre that has put a dent in pop culture quite like Encanto, the latest from Walt Disney Animation Studios. "We Don't Talk About Bruno," "The Family Madrigal," "Surface Pressure," all songs that have topped Billboard charts and dominated TikTok for more than a year now, courtesy of Hamilton scribe Lin-Manuel Miranda. But an equally vital part of Encanto's inviting world, an enchanted casita in which the vibrant members of the Madrigal family live and dream, is the orchestral score courtesy of Germaine Franco. It's the score that made Franco an Oscar nominee, only the sixth woman in Oscar history to be nominated for Best Original Score (and the first Latina). And now, that same score is up for a Grammy for Score Soundtrack for Visual Media, alongside many of the same big names she competed against for the Academy Award earlier this year: Hans Zimmer, Jonny Greenwood, and Nicholas Britell. Germaine's score for Encanto is inviting and magical, making expert use of a variety of Latinx instruments and musical styles to fill in the many corners of the Madrigal family tree. Colombian rhythms mix with samba and cumbia, alongside more vital, traditional orchestral instrumentation. It's a melting pot of influences that nonetheless span vast corners of the Latinx umbrella, making for a sound as narratively diverse as it is thematically appropriate. Now, we welcome Germaine Franco to the show to discuss her score for Encanto and more. You can find Germaine Franco at her official website here. Encanto is currently streaming on Disney+. You can also listen to the score on your preferred music streaming service courtesy of Walt Disney Records.

The “Encanto” soundtrack remains truly enchanted, spending its ninth week at number-one on the Billboard 200 albums chart for the tracking week spanning March 4 through March 10. This comes as the film continues to notch wins during the awards season, claiming the BAFTA for Best Animated Feature and a Society of Composers and Lyricists prize for Germaine Franco‘s score. Read more about this week's charts at Billboard.com here and here. “Encanto” achieved another 72,500 album units based on its combined album sales, track sales, and online streams. That's down 9% from last week, but it was still enough to outpace the week's top debut, King Von‘s posthumous album “What it Means to Be King.” The rapper was shot and killed during an altercation in November 2020. He had released his debut studio album, “Welcome to O'Block,” just one week before his murder. It peaked at number-five on the chart, which makes “What it Means” his highest-charting effort with 59,000 album units. Rounding out the top five are Morgan Wallen‘s “Dangerous” at number-three, Kodak Black‘s “Back for Everything” at number-four, and Gunna‘s “DS4Ever” at number-five. Meanwhile, on the Hot 100 singles chart, Glass Animals‘ “Heat Waves” remains number-one for the second week after taking a record 59 weeks to get to the top spot. It's the first song by a British group to spend multiple weeks at number-one since the Spice Girls‘ breakthrough hit “Wannabe” in the 1990s. But “Encanto's” “We Don't Talk About Bruno” is still holding tight to number-two after spending five weeks at the pinnacle. Perhaps we'll be talking about “Bruno” again if “Encanto” ends up winning Best Animated Feature at the Oscars on March 27. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/masseffect/support

Disney's Encanto is a spiritual banquet … hence, we SHOULD talk about Bruno! Join guest speaker Bernadette Toohey MGL and I, as we explore the hidden spiritual gifts, our dignity, the centrality of family and what makes truly Encanto prophetic for our times!Excerpt: "...one of our focus areas at the moment in MGL sisters particularly, is allowing people to really know and to move out really powerfully in the spiritual gifts in the gifts that were given through the Holy Spirit...... regarding Bruno, I was thinking a little bit back to the prophets like Jeremiah, and I guess the prophet Elijah, and even say, John the Baptist, they're these kind of these weirdos that do strange things in Scripture, but they're actually really anointed with the Word of God... they were, in some way, kind of silenced and kind of ostracised from their not only their biological families, but from the church family precisely because they had a particular spiritual gift that was at that time, it seemed threatening to the norm. A bit like Bruno being prophetic of the fragmentation of the casita... and in some ways, it's like the Catholic church historically was like "Let's not talk about Francis..."All music used in the episode were SamYungOfficial's covers from Disney's Encanto soundtrack (Germaine Franco, Lin-Manuel Miranda)
Attack of the Killer Soundtrack 63 This episode we welcome back composer Erich Stem as we play and discuss all the 2021 Oscar nominees for both Best Original Song and Best Original Score. And as we decide who has just thrown in a B-side from their latest album, we also delve into… the movie trailer formula, a transformation, layers upon layers, the harmonic box, If Beale Street Could Talk, taking a year off, moody and quiet, Nicholas Britell, that was the point… was to watch stuff break, calculated, detuned piano, Coco, Tōru Takemitsu, sometimes they gotta snub somebody, Beyoncé, chord progression, The Cure, they made you feel like you were in the room with the band, Hans Zimmer, checking the boxes, the single sound of a standard orchestra, Radiohead, Daniel Craig, Lin-Manuel Miranda, thriller score, different harmonies, Ashley Thursby, Germaine Franco, Don't Look Up, sounds of different cultures, Alberto Iglesias, VHS tapes mailed to your house, Trent Reznor, when we run the microwave, Van Morrison, parenting styles, the Belgian radio orchestra, writing in another language, oh this is what they are doing, Jonny Greenwood, the Shenandoah Valley, inserting politics, colorful shifts, Billie Eilish, Zoom calls, assaulting you with jazz and a floodgate of musical performances. "Well she had the good formula... she had a key change at the chorus then a... multi-instrument climactic moment followed by the crash cymbal and then just the voice alone."

In the first episode of Casual Chats for 2022, Patricia and Arun Mehta from The Arun Mehta Show discuss about the 2022 Walt Disney animated film Encanto. In a small town in Colombia, the Madrigals live in a house where the members have gifts and abilities in thanks to a candle containing a miracle. One of the family members, a young teenage girl named Mirabel, doesn't have any magical powers. One day, she sees the house cracking and falling apart. The only one who can help her save the house is her fortune telling uncle Bruno who had since been ostracized by the family and had disappeared. Will Mirabel save the house before it's too late? The film has made over $228 million dollars in the box office and has won the Golden Globes for Best Animated Feature. It has been praised for its theme of family and intergenerational trauma, its animation, its representation of Colombian culture, and the music done by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Germaine Franco. What did Patricia and Arun think of the film? Listen and find out. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/old-school-lane/support
In Season 3, episode 1 of the Bad Filipino podcast, I talk with my dear friend Jennifer C. about the Disney animated feature Encanto, focusing primarily on the women who bring this film to life and the incredible representation of Colombian culture throughout the movie. Jennifer C. is a Colombian American blogger, content creator, speaker and creative. As one-half of the sister duo @CurlyCurvyPassion on social media and the web since 2016, Jennifer advocates for empowerment through real talk about natural hair, body love, community & culture. You can read her blog and follow her social media at: CURLY CURVY PASSION. Encanto is Disney's first film that truly encapsulates the culture and nuances of Colombia. From the storyline and historical references to the symbolism of the costumes and music soundtrack. Encanto is the 60th film by Disney with all original songs written by multi-award-winning playwright/producer/director Lin-Manuel Miranda. Every effort was made in being as true and authentic to the creation of this animated feature. The Co-director and Co-writer Charise Castro Smith is from Miami, Florida and raised in a Cuban family. Germaine Franco composed the film and has shattered the glass ceiling for Latina composers. She is the first female composer for a Disney animated feature, the first Latina composer invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences music branch and to receive the Annie Award for Outstanding Achievement for Music in an Animated Feature (COCO). Plus, Franco is the first female composer to be hired by DreamWorks Animation and Pixar. The soundtrack for Encanto hit the ground running upon its release in November 2021. Within two weeks, it reached number 1 on Billboard 200, dethroning Adele's 30. It is the first Disney film since Frozen II to top the chart. Up for several award nominations, it has won seven so far. An impressive seven songs from the album appeared on the US Billboard Hot 100, led by "We Don't Talk About Bruno" - which was the soundtrack's most popular song. it reached number one on the Spotify Top 50 US chart on January 10, 2022. The single "Surface Pressure" reached number 10, making Encanto the first Disney animated film to have generated multiple top-10 songs on the Hot 100. "We Don't Talk About Bruno" is the first-ever original Disney song to top the chart. On the UK Singles Chart, "We Don't Talk About Bruno", "Surface Pressure" and "The Family Madrigal" have peaked at numbers one, five and fifteen, respectively. Nearly all the female voice roles were cast by Latina artists who act and sing on the soundtrack, and all of Colombian or Cuban descent. Actress Angélica María Cepeda Jiménez who voices Julieta (Maribel's mom), is born in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia. Carolina del Pilar Gaitán Lozano who voices Pepa Madrigal (Aunt) is born in Villavicencio, Meta, Colombia. The main character Maribel Madrigal is voiced by Stephanie Beatriz (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), who was born in Neuquén, Argentina. Maribel's sisters are voiced by Jessica Darrow (Luisa, a Cuban American born in Miami) and Diane Guerrero (Isabela, Colombian born in New Jersey). The only character with a separate voice actress and singer is 'Abuela' Alma Madrigal. She is voiced by actress Maria Cecilia Botero Cadavid (Colombian), with actress Olga Merediz (Cuban) providing the vocals. I came away from our conversation completely inspired and mesmerized with Colombian culture, learning how much Disney got it right with Encanto. It is a beautiful and powerful story that opens the doors for conversations on healing from trauma, embracing one's culture... even finding the strength to be true to one's identity. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/myki-angeline/support

Join us as we get Un Poco Loco on this episode of attraction checklist. Recorded on November 1, 2021. TRANSCRIPT: Welcome to Attraction Checklist. This episode we return to Disney California Adventure to see the updates to Mickey's PhilharMagic. The Disneyland Resort website describes this attraction saying: Immerse yourself in the wonder of Disney animation and music when you experience this 12-minute, 3D movie starring Donald Duck. There are no age or height requirements for this attraction and there isn't a thrill level listed either. We experienced the previous version of Mickey's PhilharMagic at California Adventure back in episode 72 of Attraction Checklist, but here are some more facts regarding the recent update. 1. It was announced on July 1, 2021, that Mickey's PhilharMagic would receive a brand new segment in the form of a musical number from Coco on July 17th. The addition would happen at Disney California Adventure and Disneyland Paris on July 17 and then later in 2021 at Walt Disney World. 2. The addition of Coco to Mickey's PhilharMagic in 2021 marks the first time a new segment has been added to the show since it's debut at Walt Disney Worlds Magic Kingdom in 2003. 3. Donald Duck appearing with characters from Coco marks the first time Disney and Pixar animators have worked on a project where characters from both animation studios would appear together on screen. 4. One of original composers from Coco, Germaine Franco returned to score the Coco section of the film. 5. The song ‘Un Poco Loco' from Pixar is featured in this update. According to Google Translate, Un Poco Loco means ‘a bit crazy.' Let's go check out the recently refreshed Mickey's PhilharMagic. I'm super excited to be joined by John B. deHaas again, this is the first time we've been in a Disney Park together since January of 2019. Mickey's Mix Magic lit up the night with a special 4th of July segment added to the end. The crowds for this performance were huge and looked like Disneyland before the pandemic. Once the show was over, getting out of the park took a while since the park closed soon after. – https://www.micechat.com/295512-disneyland-update-red-white-boo/ With the recent 4th of July celebration here in the US this past week, the Disney Parks Blog posted about the Flag Retreat Ceremony and it returning to Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom on July 1st. Disneyland's flag retreat has been happening daily since the reopening on April 30th. The ceremony is one of the park's oldest traditions. The flag retreat ceremony happens daily in the late afternoon in Town Square. Check with Guest Services for exact timing. – https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2021/07/time-honored-flag-retreat-ceremonies-return-to-walt-disney-world-resort-and-disneyland-resort/ The Disneyland Hotel has reopened along with a couple of it's famous establishments. Trader Sam's Enchanted Tiki Bar and Tangaroa Terrace both welcomed guests back for their great food and drink options. The Tangaroa Terrace bar is open 11am to midnight, and Trader Sam's is open 4pm to midnight. The bars have a 90 minute window to enjoy your food and beverages, to allow for more guests who are waiting to get in. – https://www.micechat.com/295512-disneyland-update-red-white-boo/ Trader Sam is celebrating at the Disneyland Hotel! The Enchanted Tiki Bar opened in 2011, making this their 10th year! To celebrate, a limited-edition pin inspired by the exterior of the location. The pin opens up to reveal a zombie head mug, along with a tiki! The pin is limited to 3,000 and is available on shopDisney.com for $19.99. – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2021/07/02/trader-sams-is-celebrating-its-10th-anniversary-in-disneyland-with-a-limited-edition-pin/ It is just the beginning of summer, but it is so hard not to look forward to fall and Halloween! The park calendar has the Haunted Mansion going down for refurb from August 15th through September 3rd. This typically means only one thing! Haunted Mansion Holiday could be returning this year! Disney has not confirmed this at this time, but it seems likely. – https://www.micechat.com/295512-disneyland-update-red-white-boo/ Guests are once again enjoying the frosty peaks of Matterhorn Mountain, since it has reopened as of July 2nd. Also, Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln also returned to the Opera House this week for guests to enjoy and take in some great air conditioning. – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2021/07/02/photos-matterhorn-bobsleds-has-reopened-in-disneyland/ and https://dlnewstoday.com/2021/07/photos-video-great-moments-with-mr-lincoln-reopens-at-disneyland/ and https://www.micechat.com/295512-disneyland-update-red-white-boo/ Coco is coming to the parks, but not exactly in the way we had imagined. On July 17th, a new Coco scene will be coming to Mickey's PhilharMagic in Disney California Adventure. “Un Poco Loco” will anchor the new scene, with Germaine Franco, one of the original composers from the movie, producing the score that is unique to the show. Disneyland Paris will also debut the addition on July 17th, with Disney World getting it for their 50th anniversary. – https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2021/07/disney-and-pixars-coco-coming-to-mickeys-philharmagic-on-july-17/ Disneyland Paris welcomed guests back to its parks recently, and with that a new FastPass option that may come to the US parks as well. Premiere Access, not to be confused with the same name as Disney+ Premiere Access, allows guests to purchase one “Premiere Access” at a time, ranging from $9.50 to $17.75, depending on the attraction. Some attractions will also have a virtual queue, which could mean the only way to ride an attraction is to pay for it. – https://www.micechat.com/295719-disneyland-update-summer-gets-normaler/ With all the great, happy news coming out of the resort lately, there is a bit of disappointing news as well. Steakhouse 55 at the Disneyland Hotel, along with the PCH Grill at Disney's Paradise Pier hotel are permanently closed. Disneyland officials have said that “options are being considered” for both locations. – https://www.ocregister.com/2021/07/01/disneyland-permanently-closes-2-restaurants-including-a-steakhouse-rich-in-disney-history/ and https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2021/07/02/news-2-restaurants-set-to-permanently-close-at-disneyland-resort/ The World of Color lagoon has some sad sights for fans of the nighttime show. The wooden structures that house the show lighting near Pixar Pier have been removed, showing extensive work in progress. This means that it is unlikely that the show will return in the near future. – https://www.micechat.com/295719-disneyland-update-summer-gets-normaler/ Maurice's Treats at the Princess Fantasy Faire has a new sweet menu item. The new item is a trio of Madeline cookies themed to Snow White, Belle, and Aurora. Snow White is flavored like chocolate chips, Belle has a citrus flavor, and Aurora tastes like raspberry. The treats have a mild flavor and are not overly sweet. They are not on the menu, so guests may have to ask for them. The trio is $6.49. – https://www.disneyfoodblog.com/2021/07/01/photos-can-you-guess-which-princess-inspired-these-new-disneyland-treats/#more-515248 Luca fans will be very excited for this next DIY treat! Luca director Enrico Casarosa has posted his recipe for Trenette al Pesto! The recipe provides step-by-step instructions that are also illustrated with characters from Luca. This one is unique in that you can attach your Minnie headband to the backpack, adding some additional flair. The bag itself is white, with Minnie ear headbands in different colors. The backpack is for sale at World of Disney for $75. – https://dlnewstoday.com/2021/07/photos-new-minnie-ear-loungefly-backpack-allows-you-to-attach-ear-headband-to-the-bag/ Discussion Topic: Evan – Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/evandisneydesign
