When you look at Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, everything we sell fits into one of the five categories: Physiological needs - the most basic needs for food, water, warmth, and rest. As an entrepreneur, you might feel you're known known for your resilience. But sometimes you just need to face the facts and move on. Today's guest, Thomas Lindsay, is CEO of Humanly HR and the host of the podcast Smallbiz Brainiac. He also has nearly a quarter century of experience in the insurance and professional employer organization (PEO) industries. From 1992 to 2002, Thomas worked for his uncle's PEO as chief operating officer. He helped the company grow to manage more than $400 million in client payroll. Sadly, the company couldn't get a worker's compensation policy to secure all that payroll in 2002 when the insurance industry fell to its knees after 9/11. “The market was hardening,” Thomas tells me in this episode. “Nobody could take the risk. Our premium was too big!” Thomas, his uncle and the rest of the company worked in a mad scramble to secure their position. Potential deals, arose only to fall through – some spectacularly. How do you turn a breaking point into a breakthrough? It's easy – if you take time to decompress. Decompressing is exactly what Lucas Barra did at a turning point in his career and life. Lucas is a sales professional, entrepreneur and coach who helps others close more sales with his business, Radical Sales Coaching. Several years ago, after creating a podcast that started to attract clients, Lucas found himself in a difficult career predicament. “I was freaked out,” Lucas tells me in this episode. “I got impostor syndrome because I wasn't sure I could fulfill clients' expectations – even though I had been doing exactly that.” Lucas realized he had become addicted to the hard work and hustle of building his business, and needed the time to relax and think over his mistakes and self-sabotage. So he decided to close his business. Decompressing became his lifeline. But decompressing didn't come easy for Lucas. He says it was as hard for him as it might be for an addict to kick drugs.
