The Talmud teaches us that neither man nor beast can survive without a liver. In his lamentations, Jeremiah laments, "My eyes are tired of weeping, my intestines are burning, my liver has been spilled over the earth." In Greek mythology, the liver was considered to be the seat of life for both gods and humans. It is said that Prometheus, who was punished by Zeus for giving mankind the Olympic fire, had his liver eaten daily by an eagle. However, it is also said that his liver grew back every night. It would seem that the Greeks did not fully comprehend the regenerative properties of the liver, yet they were able to encapsulate its essence symbolically. Similarly, it is thought that Etruscan oracles could 'read' the future in a sheep's liver. In art, the suffering of Christ is often depicted with a wound on the right side, which is where the liver is located. This symbolism is thought to represent the duality of salvation, associated with the qualities of good and evil. "Indeed, it would appear that the right side was chosen in order to fulfil the prophecy of the Old Testament." All of this is documented in the book "Prometheus and the Liver through Art and Medicine", a fascinating multidisciplinary publication co-authored by Thomas M. van Gulik, a highly esteemed hepatobiliary surgeon and researcher globally, who is currently Professor Emeritus of Surgery at the Amsterdam University Medical Center in the Netherlands. Der aus den Niederlanden stammende Autor Robert van Gulik war Sprachengenie und Diplomat. Seine Romane, die im alten China spielen und Richter Di in den Mittelpunkt stellen, waren einige Zeit sehr beliebt - ursprünglich erschienen in den 50er und 60er Jahren -, werden aber aktuell hierzulande nicht mehr verlegt. We're officially in the upper half of the entries and it is with no small amount of nepotism that I would advocate to you a historical novel for seventh place. The Chinese Gold Murders, by Robert van Gulik occupy a bizarre place in the history of Chinese crime fiction, in that the credited author is as much an author as an adapter of foreign fiction. The myth goes that Robert, a Dutch diplomat on a mission to China, found a collection of 18th century Chinese murder mysteries, set in the Tang dynasty of the 7th century, though with some anachronistic elements mixed in so as to not alienate the audience, and Robert enjoyed reading these mysteries so much that he cut out half of the stories that he suspected had been written by a talentless hack separate to the first half, and set about translating and adapting the mysteries of Judge Dee for a European audience. Judge Dee as a character is based on a real historical figure, and follows in a long tradition of Chinese crime-solving magistrates.

David Van der Gulik is a Canadian retired ice hockey right winger. He was a draft pick of the Calgary Flames, selected 206th overall in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, and appeared in six games with the team in 2008–09 before spending four seasons with the Colorado Avalanche and his last North American season with the Los Angeles Kings. Last February, Leiden University Libraries (UBL) acquired a rare Chinese manuscript dating back to the Ming Dynasty. Three Chinese Studies students got the opportunity to decipher the edict (dated 1582) during their internships. In this UBLpodcast they share their findings. The Imperial edict is part of the former collection of well-known sinologist and author of detective-novels Robert van Gulik. Thanks to a large private donation and support by our Friends Foundation, the UBL was able to purchase the piece. The edict – written on silk – praises the parents of Zhao Fan, a civil servant with a good reputation. The reigning emperor honors Zhao's father, his father's deceased first wife, and Zhao's mother for the upbringing of their son. De students studied various aspects of the document. Mauk Evertse, the first interviewee in this podcast, describes the physical characteristics of the document. Next, Iks van Eijndhoven gives some historical context about the Ming Dynasty. And finally, Jelle Kuiper describes how he managed to translate the Chinese text. During their internship, the three students were mentored by Hilde De Weerdt, Professor of Chinese History, Lin Fan, Lecturer in Chinese Art, and Marc Gilbert, Chinese Studies Librarian.
