Hey lady! You're in for a treat this week so we won't delay. Dr. Thema Bryant, psychologist, author, professor, sacred artist, and minister joins Dr. Dom and Terri to bring a much-needed balm to our spirits with her wisdom, insight and soothing energy. Whenever Dr. Thema speaks it's hard not to feel that everything is going to be alright!Dr. Thema is host of the popular The Homecoming Podcast and is no stranger to the podcast airwaves or the Cultivating H.E.R. Space podcast. Check out S3E12 and S8E12 to hear some of the timeless gems she shares. This week, Terri and Dr. Dom welcome Dr. Thema back to discuss how her new book Matters of the Heart can help everyone who is in need of healing in their relationships.Often when people discuss relationships the focus is on romantic relationships. Dr. Thema posits that healing our relationship with relating to others in all facets of our life will help us build the level of community needed to lead a healthy and fulfilled life. There are mindsets that one can adopt to help add clarity to her or his personal approach to their circle. Maybe you don't need to cut that person off…you just need boundaries. Or, perhaps the relationship feels difficult because its run its course…and that's ok. What can seem easy to understand in theory can often be difficult in practice, which is why Dr. Thema explains that she structured her book to be both a chapter book that can be read in order, but also a reference book that you can call upon for specific scenarios and situations. In short, it's a true tool to aide in the healing of all your relationships. Lady, if it's not evident yet, we're going to need each other to get through this new phase of life. Healing and strengthening the relationships in your life not only provide peace, comfort and love but also serve as a powerful act of resistance against oppression and harm. Let's love each other through this next chapter, lady! Want to find out how? Hey lady! It's Fall and for many, it's officially homecoming season; the season when they'll reunite with old classmates to reminisce on the fun times of their youth, but this week Terri and Dr. Dom want to focus on a more personal homecoming, one that is universally more accessible to all.Dr. Thema Bryant, a friend of the show and two-time previous guest, discusses the power of finding a path home to yourself on her podcast The Homecoming Podcast. She offers wisdom on all of the various ways we lose ourselves as we journey through life and provides strategies on how to cultivate the tools needed to journey through life with wholeness. Dr. Dom and Terri draw inspiration from her podcast and dive deep into the elements that make a personal homecoming something you can delve into at your own pace.Bittersweet undertones run through homecomings because they often come from tough lessons, but the glory and self-respect that you can generate from making the decision to return to yourself is often the greatest reward. Dr. Dom and Terri offer tips to help you usher in your personal homecoming. Whether it's your first self-awakening or the latest chapter in an incredible story you have the tools to write the most beautiful scenes yet. 8 Ways You Can Come Home to Yourself1. Engage in Self-Reflection: Take time for introspection through journaling or meditation. Reflecting on your thoughts and experiences helps clarify your values and desires, fostering a deeper connection with your authentic self. Research shows that expressive writing can significantly enhance self-awareness and emotional health.2. Practice Mindfulness: Incorporate mindfulness techniques into your daily routine to cultivate presence and self-awareness. Mindfulness meditation can reduce anxiety and increase acceptance of your thoughts and feelings, promoting self-compassion.3. Set Healthy Boundaries: Learn to say no and prioritize your own needs. Establishing boundaries is crucial for self-care and maintaining your sense of self in various relationships.4. Nurture Your Inner Child: Engage in activities that bring you joy and creativity, reminiscent of your childhood. This process can heal past wounds and foster a sense of freedom and authenticity, allowing you to reconnect with who you truly are.5. Build a Supportive Community: Surround yourself with people who uplift and support you. Having a network of like-minded individuals can reinforce your self-worth and provide encouragement on your journey of self-discovery.6. Prioritize Self-Care: Make time for activities that promote your physical, emotional, and mental well-being. Regular self-care practices can lead to increased self-love and help you reconnect with your desires and needs.7. Pursue Your Passions: Identify and engage in hobbies or interests that ignite your passion. Pursuing what you love enhances your self-identity and fulfillment, allowing you to express your true self.8. Embrace Change and Growth: Recognize that personal growth often requires stepping out of your comfort zone. Embracing change fosters resilience and helps you adapt to new aspects of yourself, ultimately leading to a stronger sense of self.Quote of the Day:“Homecoming is a return to authentic living that is based on truth, self-acceptance, and an aligning of action with values and purpose.” –Dr. Thema Bryant-Davis, Homecoming: Overcome Fear and Trauma to Reclaim Your Whole, Authentic Self  Wisdom Wednesdays with TerriCultivating H.E.R. What does it take to truly thrive after experiencing trauma? And how does trauma shape us in ways we might not even realize? These are questions that hit close to home for me, especially as someone who has walked the incredibly challenging healing road after sexual trauma. That's why I'm especially excited to share this conversation with you.In this episode I am so honored to share with you an interview I did in 2019 with Dr. Thema Bryant, who's such an inspiring and powerful voice in the field of trauma recovery. Her approach is a unique blend of psychology, spirituality, and embodied healing practices. In the conversation, we explore the nuances of interpersonal trauma and why it often impacts survivors differently than other types of trauma. Dr. Thema also emphasizes the importance of understanding cultural context and how oppression plays a significant role in trauma, and the healing process. Her insights on reclaiming sexuality and reconnecting with the body after trauma were especially meaningful to me, and I believe they'll resonate with many of you who are survivors of sexual trauma. And if you're not a survivor, but are close to someone that is, especially if you're in a romantic partnership with them, my hope is that this will help bring more awareness as to how to support your partner and navigate your shared intimacy with greater understanding. Here's a sneak peak into the conversation:Why interpersonal trauma hits so differently—how it feels like it steals a piece of you and what it takes to heal from that. How culture, oppression, and our environments impact healing. (This one is so so important!) What it means to truly reclaim your body and sexuality, step by tender step, and how to come home to yourselfA surprising twist on forgivenessHow sharing our trauma stories can be a profound and powerful step towards healing and whyHow important it is to address embodied healing as survivors, not just talk therapyA little bit more about Dr. Thema Bryant: Dr. Thema Bryant completed her doctorate in Clinical Psychology at Duke University and her post-doctoral training at Harvard Medical Center's Victims of Violence Program. Upon graduating, she became the Coordinator of the Princeton University SHARE Program, which provides intervention and prevention programming to combat sexual assault, sexual harassment, and harassment based on sexual orientation. She is currently a tenured professor of psychology in the Graduate School of Education and Psychology at Pepperdine University, where she directs the Culture and Trauma Research Laboratory. Her clinical and research interests center on interpersonal trauma and the societal trauma of oppression. She is a past president of the Society for the Psychology of Women and a past APA representative to the United Nations. Dr. Thema also served on the APA Committee on International Relations in Psychology and the Committee on Women in Psychology.Having earned a master's of divinity, Dr. Thema is an ordained elder in the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Thanks for tuning into the second part of the affirmative action series! This week, I am joined on the podcast by Eden Senay and Nina Todd, the co-presidents of the Black Student Alliance at Yale, and Kevin Quach and Michelle Liang, the previous co-moderators of the Asian American Student Alliance at Yale! Together, we have a conversation about how our perceptions of affirmative action have changed throughout time, misconceptions about affirmative action, the Yale DOJ lawsuit, media coverage of affirmative action and how it takes away attention from other necessary work, our ideal college admissions and education systems, discussions we've had about affirmative action in our own spaces, and more. --- I also wanted to briefly say something about the violence and domestic terrorism that took place at the Capitol this past week. For the past couple of days, I've felt such overwhelming anger and sadness that I haven't really been able to say anything eloquent out loud or on social media. But I wanted to be transparent on this platform—in every way possible, the Homecoming Podcast absolutely condemns this behavior and these white supremacist ideologies. Those people aren't patriots, they weren't just “protestors.” The fact that there were Asians and Asian Americans there, too, and some of the Capitol police and security officers were willingly taking selfies with the rioters, and the police seemed to offer little resistance...I'm just so disappointed and disheartened, and I have so many questions. For now, please, everyone, check in with friends and family members in Washington D.C. and others living in places where riots occurred. I hope you all are taking time to sit and process things, reflect, learn from new things popping up on social media and the news, and take care of yourselves. I'm still sitting here trying to process things, but if you need support or someone to talk to, you can definitely reach out to me. --- Follow Homecoming on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/homecomingpod/) and Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/homecomingpod) to get to know our guests better, receive quick access to updates, and see behind-the-scenes content! We move around at a hundred million miles an hour all of the time. And sometimes, the only way the universe can get our attention is to force us into a sacred pause. And now the world is in a period of mandatory stillness.  Psychologist, speaker and professor, Dr. Thema Bryant-Davis has brilliantly dubbed this time a “divine opportunity” to take inventory over our lives, gain clarity, and dig deep to understand what really matters to us.  Dr. Thema cautions us to break the vicious cycle of conflating our “busy-ness” with our value, and offers a blueprint for defining the places where we’re accepting a “basement” existence when we were made for a “penthouse” lifestyle. To follow Dr. Thema on social media or to find out more about her podcast The Homecoming Podcast, you can find her at: www.instagram.com/dr.themaTo order Justins’s book, Stay Woke, visit: http://www.staywokegiveback.comTo support Justin’s movement to give back to underprivileged youth visit: http://www.staywokegiveback.org

We hear a lot about self care - how to get it, why we need more of it, and what does or doesn't constitute it. But lately I've been made aware of the residual effects and payoff of self care - how it benefits me long after I'm in the practice of doing or getting what I need.  And it makes everything related to my ideas, my planning, my long-term thinking crystal clear. If you struggle with overwhelm, anxiety, irritability and lack of focus, I highly recommend you thinking through the self care practice that makes the most sense for you. And check out Dr. Thema Bryant- Davis's episode on the Homecoming Podcast about self care. “Surviving is not the same thing as living.” Lady, how many times have people commented on how strong you are? How many times have you felt like you were falling apart on the inside but you refused to let others see it so you would not be perceived as weak? Take a moment and think about where you learned that pattern. Chances are you are living out a narrative that is not your own. You may be operating in a space conditioned to protect your wounds...shield you from your trauma. Trauma that was caused by someone behaving in reaction to their own wounds.  In today’s episode, Terri and Dom are joined by Dr. Thema Bryant-Davis, a licensed psychologist, ordained minister, and sacred artist. She encourages us to think about our pain in ways that many of us have never considered but will definitely bring us closer to healing. Thank you for tuning in to our first episode of Homecoming Podcast. We hosts, Isis and Chae, discuss the purpose of the show which features the stories of Black families who birth at home. We acknowledge that we are witnessing a renaissance in birth and maternal health. This "birth renaissance" is a response to the national crisis in maternal health in which Black women are 3-4 times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women. Everyday, more of us are taking birth back into our hands and birthing in the way of our ancestors as many of us are only 2 to 3 generations removed from home birth being the norm. Our vision is to normalize home birth in the Black community and as Chae says, "In Wakanda, we birth at home!"
