Anne Hillerman had some very big shoes to fill when she stepped up to continue her father Tony Hillerman's much loved Joe and Jim Navajo mysteries, an 18-book series adored by fans as well as admired by critics. Hi there, I'm your host Jenny Wheeler and in Binge Reading this week Anne talks about how she came to assume her father's mantle and write five more Navajo mysteries which are all New York Times best sellers. And we've got three E book copies of her latest, The Tale Teller, to giveaway to three lucky readers. A mysterious anonymous donation . . . a precious artifact stolen, linked by a seemingly random murder. . . Enter the draw on the Joys of Binge Reading website Giveaway page at the joys of binge reading.com or on the Binge Reading Facebook page. Draw closes June 6, 2020. Six things you'll learn from this Joys of Binge Reading episode: How Anne came to take on her father's mantleWhy writing non fiction led to fictionThe tragic strength of the Navajo peopleHow a fine dress became a holy relicPlaces to go in Navajo countryWhat she wishes she'd asked her Dad Tony Hillerman Where to find Anne Hillerman: Website: https://annehillerman.com/ Facebook: @authotannehillerman What follows is a "near as" transcript of our conversation, not word for word but pretty close to it, with links to important mentions. Jenny Wheeler: But now here's Anne. Hello there Anne and welcome to the show. It's great to have you with us. Anne Hillerman: Hello Jenny. Thank you so much for asking me. Introducing author Anne Hillerman Anne Hillerman - Navajo country mysteries carried on from her Dad Tony Hillerman Jenny Wheeler: We're both in a global pandemic at the opposite sides of the world and I wonder how you are managing with social distancing. Has it made much of an impact on your life? Anne Hillerman: Yes and no. I think anyone who's a writer tends to have some pretty strong introverted genes and so in some ways I have been glad to have an excuse to say, no, I can't go to lunch, no, I can't talk to your Kiwanis group, to your Rotary group because of social distancing, and to have more quiet time to focus on my writing. But the downside of that is I write about real places, and part of my process always has been going to the places that are in the book and then trying to talk to people who live there to get a real sense of what the community is like. Getting through a pandemic whole With the book I'm working on now, I had two big interviews set up right before New Mexico, the state where I live, went on not exactly lockdown, but pretty darn close to it. One of the interviews was at a school and of course they were all closed and the other was at a scientific facility and the person I was talking to did the public tours so those were all closed. That's been a downside of it. But I think once things open up again, I'll be able to put those pieces together. I miss my friends and I miss being able to go out to dinner but all in all, I think we just have to all do what we can, so we'll be done with this. I guess that's a long answer to your short question. Summertime is coming soon... Jenny Wheeler: That's absolutely right. If we all do our bit, then hopefully. I heard somebody on the TV this morning say, well, it's going to be like this for the next two years or until we get a vaccine and I guess none of us really wants to think of it that way, but it might be a little bit of a long journey. Anne Hillerman: I had some really sweet invitations to do talks this Spring and of course they were all canceled and so I missed that. But it's worth it. I have so many friends who are in the high risk group and I wouldn't have ever wanted to take a chance on anything happening to them, so I think we all have to do our part to get through this. Jenny Wheeler: Yes. You've got a unique story as a novelist because you've continued your father, Tony Hillerman's,

I’m so excited to bring you this conversation with someone who has quite literally welcomed me into her home to learn, refresh, and connect with other women... accomplished entrepreneur, social justice advocate, sought after speaker, and a community builder at heart, Anne Devereux-Mills. Capping a 25-year career as one of the most influential women in the advertising industry, in 2012 Anne founded Parlay House, a now international salon-style gathering of over 4,000 women who meet to pull each other forward through a combination of shared experiences, meaningful content, and peer-to-peer connections. In addition, alongside raising her two daughters as a single mother, becoming a sponsor to a young woman from Cambodia and then a stepmother to two stepsons, Anne has achieved some remarkable things. She’s been a mentor for SHE-CAN, an organization supporting and grooming the next generation of female world leaders coming from post-genocide countries, and served as the director of Stanford University's Healthy Body Image Programs. She was the Executive Director of The Return, an Emmy-nominated documentary about the experience of people returning to society post-incarceration. And she and her husband were the lead sponsors of California’s Proposition 36, which restored fairness in sentencing to the State’s excessive Three Strikes Law. At the heart of it all has been a deep abiding belief in authentic, non-transactional relationships, social justice, and the power of women to women connections. I felt Anne’s generosity, perspective, and wisdom throughout our conversation and found so many of the lessons Anne has learned resonating for me, from discerning where our presence is most needed with our children, to learning to release perfectionism. Synchronistically, so many things I'm grappling with in my life, Anne shined light on in this conversation. I was reminded that small acts can have meaningful cascades of impact, that we can hold a vision for an epic life rooted in connection and what really matters, not in having it all exactly right or at exactly the same time. And I gained a heightened awareness and appreciation for “Inflection points,” those times in our lives when we’re called to change our course or as Anne says “the moment after what was but before what will be.” I hope you’ll enjoy this conversation as much as I did and leave feeling more empowered to build authentic connections, stay patient during your “inflection points” and take your own first small acts toward meaningful impact. Much appreciation, P.S. Check out the announcement below to join us for the #oneminutemommanifesto Challenge in the Facebook Group in honor of Mother's Day. P.S.S. Today I'm visiting San Francisco's Mission district to chat with Winnie co-founders, Sara Mauskopf and Anne Halsall. They have a unique background working at large tech companies like Google, Twitter, Quora, and Postmates, where they worked together before starting Winnie, “the companion app for parents.” As someone who's built and admires community-driven businesses, it was a pleasure to dive into how Winnie is creating community and a platform for parents. As mothers, Sara and Anne exemplify founder/market fit and are uniquely qualified to build a product for parents. In this episode we talk about: How Anne and Sara found founder/market fit and how their personal experience — Sara and Anne both have two children — informs not only how they built Winnie the product, but also how they built Winnie the company. How Winnie combats fake parenting news, and why it was important for them to take a stance on certain issues and actively moderate out certain topics. The power of communities aligned around a single vertical. We compare custom-built communities to generalized community-building tools like Facebook and Reddit. Of course, we also talk about some of their favorite products, including a way to continuously share your location with other members of your family, an app to share photos with family members, and another that captures one second every day and over time turns it into a highlight reel for your life. We’ll be back next week so be sure to subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, Breaker, Overcast, or wherever you listen to your favorite podcasts. Also, big thanks to our sponsors, GE Ventures, Rally Rd, and AngelList for their support.

Green Dreamer: Sustainability and Regeneration From Ideas to Life
What if more people with great influence on popular culture were to more boldly speak up for sustainability? What would it mean for our world if we had models who were role models, who stood up for public health, social and environmental welfare, and who represent brands that actually align with their personal values? Sharing her wisdom on this episode is Anne Therese Bengtsson, a former New York City model and Co-Founder of Role Models Management, which is on a mission to redefine what it means to be a model. She's also the podcast host of Hey Change, where she inspires people to embrace curiosity and positivity and promotes an ethical and sustainable way of life. Let's dive in. HIGHLIGHTS [8:28] How the modeling industry works and how Role Models Management sets itself apart. When Anne Biklé started rehabilitating her Seattle backyard to plant a garden, she didn’t anticipate the return of carbon to the soil. But after a few years, she got curious and invited a soil scientist from the University of Washington to compare samples from the original dirt behind the garage with samples from the Eco-Lawn, perennial beds, and vegetable bed. The results were astonishing. The Eco-Lawn had 5% more carbon than the baseline sample, the perennial beds came in at 8% more carbon, and the heavily amended vegetable bed had a full 12% more carbon. Imagine the impact if every gardener applied the same processes and principles. And what if farmers applied the ideas at scale? Anne is a biologist and environmental planner with what she calls "a bad case of plant lust," and her career spans the fields of environmental stewardship, habitat restoration, and public health. She is also the co-author of The Hidden Half of Nature, a thought-provoking book about leveraging the cultivation of microbiomes to transform agriculture and medicine. Anne and her husband, professor of geomorphology David Montgomery, speak regularly on the topics of soil health, conservation and sustainable development. Today, Anne joins Ross, Christophe and Paul to share the origin of her interest in the soil and appreciation of the natural world. She walks us through the process of rehabilitating the soil in her backyard garden, describing how she collected the necessary mulch and organic matter as well as the stunning experience of watching life return to the yard. Anne Torney is a partner at Mithun | Solomon, and leads their San Francisco office. For more than 20 years, she has made affordable multi-family housing and transit-oriented urban infill the focus of her work. For Anne, architecture isn't just about the form or the icon, but the process of making and the narrative of a building, and sharing that with a community to help them envision change. She believes that the two biggest challenges of our time are income inequality and climate change, but design has the power to address both. In this episode, Anne tells the story of her first community planning meeting, how Mithun has been able to successfully get affordable housing projects built in San Francisco, and shares why you should bring your values to your firm and push for change. Show Recap: How Anne's interest in architecture developed - "In a very backwards way" The idea that buildings can be read like books, as critical cultural objects Working at David Baker Architects was her first introduction to affordable housing projects How attending her first community meeting and her first encounter with design guidelines led Anne to study Urbanism and City Planning at Berkeley Wanting to study with Daniel Solomon in grad school, and the approach that architecture and city planning are one continuous discipline On the eternal conflict between a city's design guidelines, what architects think is the best for the city, and what the public thinks is the best for the city The disagreement between parties is often programmatic rather than design Anne talks about the kinds of clients and non-profit developers she works with at Mithun that build affordable housing projects in San Francisco Why it's important to have the same values and mission as your clients How Anne became a Principal and Managing Partner at Mithun - "Having a nose for what I had a passion for" Why Anne finds the firm management aspects of her job very gratifying On changing an organization from within versus finding an organization that shares the same values as you - "I love it when people bring their values to work...and say this is what gives me passion, this is what I'm seeing the world needs, and shouldn't we as a firm be doing this?" "Be really out there with what want, and the way you think the world should be." What Anne loves most about being an Architect - for her it's not just about the form and the icon, but the process of making a building, and taking the narrative of a building and sharing it with a community to help them envision change. On how the biggest challenges we currently face are climate change and income inequality, but design has the power to address both.

Do you ever feel like you are struggling to reach the right people and the right amount of eyes. Making sales can be a struggle. Teaching what you do is one thing, but seeing where you actually need to improve is sometimes more difficult. If you want to improve the impact of the things that you are putting out into the world and get people to look at your product and buy from you, all you have to do is tell stories. Stories are so important for getting your point across and showing why your product is unique, special and relevant to the buyer. Today, I am going to talk about six stories that you need to share before anyone buys from you. You don't have to tell all six, and I'm not going to tell you what to say, but these are things that your customers need to hear before buying from you. Show Notes [04:17] The importance of telling stories and how well Vanessa Chase does it. [04:52] How Anne read stories about people who have gotten great results with essential oils. Stories are social proof in a way that is not salesy. [06:53] How stories are the future of selling. [07:57] Story #1: The problem they have now and why they might be ready for the solution I have. The first critical story is to tell your customer that they are in the right place and why it is important to solve the problem. [08:38] Take the time to find out who your customer is and what their most relevant challenge is. [10:25] Story #2: Tell your own story and share what inspires you and why you created your product or service. [14:51] Story #3: Before and after. How someone tried your product and learning something unexpected. [15:40] Story #4: Before and after. A case study of how someone transformed as a result of one or more selling points of your program.[16:03] Before and after stories are super powerful so be sure and look for these in your clients and customers. [18:00] Story # 5: Someone who has tried everything else, but your program is the one that worked for them. [21:46] Story #6: The potential future of the person who uses your product or works with you. The glimpse. [23:00] Using hope and proof to promote and sell your product. [23:40] Sharing the story of someone who has achieved their dream. These are inspiring stories that inspire the idea of this could be my future. “Think less, feel more.” Anne Rapp and Brandon Quittem (@theyoganomads) were tired of feeling like cattle being herded into a life they didn’t want. Working in “Corporate America” left them feeling unfulfilled, stressed, and dissatisfied. The two first met during a week-long on-boarding session at Oracle for new software sales reps. They were paired together for a training exercise, but blew off the assignment to talk about travel. (Do you sense any foreshadowing here?) The duo eventually became a couple and had also begun a deep dive into yoga. Over the next several months, yoga provided Anne and Brandon with a high level of clarity and awareness. They became much closer and started to ask themselves significant questions about their lives. These experiences on the mat also offered a stark contrast as to what they were enduring in 9-5 office culture. With all of this self-discovery swirling about, Anne and Brandon decided to make a change. Cue the good tunes, beer and some Pizza Luce (the Wrangler) at Anne’s Uptown apartment one night, and you have a recipe for The Yoga Nomads. Not long after this momentous evening, the pair purchased one-way tickets to India and backpacked across Asia for the next year. They blogged about their adventures and became one of the first (if not the first) traveling yoga blog in the world. Today, the Yoga Nomads seek to empower fellow yoga instructors, specifically how they can turn their passion for yoga into a sustainable business. Some topics mentioned and discussed: Breakfast smoothies and healthy eating habits How to make money off a travel blog How Anne and Brandon tag team the business Trade-offs and sacrifices with a traveling lifestyle Tips when attempting to work and travel Helpful travel habits and routines Meditation boot camp (this will blow your mind!) Should you have your baby at home, hospital, or birthing center of some sort? It’s a very important question to consider. If you’ve never found yourself pondering this question, perhaps one day you will. I was only a few weeks pregnant when I started to consider my options, I wish now I’d started thinking about it sooner. I needed to find care practitioner for my pregnancy and I knew I wanted a midwife. On a referral from a friend, and eager to have my first appointment, I picked the first one I met, she was lovely, warm, compassionate, grandmotherly, and kind. When I told her I was also considering a birthing center and home birth, and she quickly preyed on the fears I had shared with her and guided me away from those options. Because she was a former home birth midwife, I trusted her opinion on the subject even more. Her experienced guidance was a relief for my worried pregnant brain in those early days. Unfortunately, her advice should have been a red flag. Instead of being concerned about getting to know me and figuring out what was best for me, she lumped me into her practice and stamped me for hospital delivery before I even had enough time to double check the outdated and misguided statistics she’d given me about home birth. A sure sign of her devotion to protecting her relationship to the hospital, not to me. I wish I’d done some more soul searching about what was really important to me before I picked my midwife. I’m even more sure of that now after talking with Anne Margolis. Anne Margolis is a Home Birth midwife with a fabulous practice in New York: Home Sweet Homebirth. Naturally, she feels that home births are a beautiful, healthy, and safe option for all moms. But one of the most important beliefs she holds to is that the mom in question has to feel safe with the place she chooses to have her baby. If she chooses a home birth because she’s pressured into it or feels guilty if she doesn’t, but doesn’t feel safe, she’ll wind up having trouble even in a home environment. The opposite is true as well--a hospital or birthing facility will not be the best place for that woman if she doesn’t feel comfortable and safe. Anne knows… she’s had some difficult experiences of her own to draw from… To say that Anne’s experiences in giving birth to her children were traumatic is to understate the issue. She was an OB nurse practitioner when she had her first two children, so she felt she had a pretty good handle on what to expect and how things would go in the hospital. She had her first child long before she even knew home births were a viable option and during the experience many decisions were made for her without her even being consulted. A pitocin drip, episiotomy, C-section… all of it came barreling toward her, presented as unavoidable decisions. After being rushed into an operating room for an “emergency” C-section, Anne waited for an hour for the surgeon to arrive then decided on her own that she was going to birth her baby… and she did. The fact is that in all of Anne’s in-hospital experiences, things could have been handled very, very differently. At the suggestion of a friend, Anne met with a midwife and discovered that there were other options, and that opened up the door to a brand new world of considerations for her. And luckily, Ann gave birth to two more children in much better circumstances. It was those experiences that were used to nudge her into the role of midwife and a thriving home birth practice. Today, Anne has extensive training and clinical experience in women’s health and maternity care, in both in-hospital and out-of-hospital settings, including water birth. She is skilled at using an integrative approach—one that combines the best of modern medicine with natural, mind-body and other holistic modalities. Anne is a doula and a childbirth educator, and incorporates the art of labor support and teaching into her midwifery practice. She is one of the most passionately dedicated homebirth practitioners I know. Her approach is sensitive, personal, and family centered. She believes that every healthy woman possesses an innate ability to give birth normally and naturally; her body knows what to do. As a result Anne is devoted to protecting undisturbed physiologic labor and birth, and the precious moments after birth when parents are meeting and connecting with their newborn babies for the first time. If you’ve ever considered working with a doula or midwife, or the option of homebirth, you owe it to yourself to listen tot his episode of Paleo Baby. I think you’ll love Anne Margolis’ compassionate, passionate approach to pregnancy, prenatal care and preparation for childbirth, and how she views the birthing process itself.. You can hear our entire conversation on this episode of Paleo Baby. Here’s the outline of this interview with Anne Margolis: [0:01] Julie’s introduction of Anne Margolis: Home birth midwife. “Most people who meet my wife quickly conclude that she is remarkable. They are right about this. She is smart, funny and thoroughly charming. Often, after hearing her speak at some function or working with her on a project, people will approach me and say something to the effect of, you know, I think the world of you, but your wife, wow!” These words from President Barack Obama couldn't describe my experience any more perfectly. I've had the honor of helping to uplift and empower countless people, but when anyone gets a chance to meet my wife, they realize where all of the really good stuff is coming from. This woman is phenomenal. She's literally a breath of fresh air whenever you walk into a room that she's in. She's gorgeous, silly, loving and beyond intelligent. I seriously think I get smarter just by some weird osmosis from being around her. Now, let's be clear. She will tell you that she didn't get this way overnight. Sure many of these qualities were innately within her, but it was through self-work, introspection, making mistakes, and self-care that she was able to become the woman she is today. The self-work came from hitting the floor in so many situations in her life that she had to choose to raise her standards or stay glued firmly to the ground. The introspection was the hard work to look within and to see where her fears were at play, and the excuses that she had leaned on to justify not reaching her potential. Making mistakes came naturally as you employ the trial and success method to figure out what works for you as a unique individual with unique circumstances. The self-care is what enabled her to feel good, strong, beautiful, and capable of gracefully handling all of challenges that life throws your way. And all of this is a small piece of her story, but today you're going to learn far more and be able to glean some life-changing insights from her example. There is a balancing force within the universe that resides within all women. When a woman feels beautiful, appreciated, and strong within herself, unbounded miracles begin to happen around her. Diane Mariechild said, “A woman is the full circle. Within her is the power to create, nurture and transform.” As men, we have to help create the conditions for the women in our lives to thrive. Because truly, nothing can give us more strength than the support of a woman who owns her real power. There are a lot of valuable insights here for all women and all men, all mom and all dads, and all people who want to do something exceptional in their lives. On top of that, we're sharing some tips our family uses to eat healthy with all of the busy stuff going on, so this episode is jam-packed with goodness. In this episode you'll discover: How the American fast food culture can be an addictive shock for foreigners. Why destiny can sometimes be found within the loving arms of a gym. How a cancer scare became a catalyst for change in our family's lives. What your body's "innate intelligence" has to do with healing. What triggered the shift in my career from working in a gym to helping people with chronic illnesses. Why doubt can sabotage the results in your healing. The weird reason that Anne makes the bed each morning (it works though!). What my wife's morning routine looks like. How Anne is able to switch gears between family, wife, and work roles so efficiently. What strategies Anne uses to feed the family healthy food with a busy lifestyle. On this episode of the Online Marketing Made Easy Podcast, I interview Anne Samoilov, on the topic of online launches. I consider Anne to be an online launch expert, and while that's not a title she would likely give herself, it's very fitting. Anne has worked on several big online launches including Marie Forleo's B-School launch that you have may heard me talk about in episode 3. It's a strategic and smart strategy to think about the promotion of your business in terms of launches, and I wanted to interview Anne because she has a unique, holistic look at launching anything online that I know you'll find helpful. In this episode, here’s what we’ll cover: How Anne defines launching (it's not what you think!) A common misconception regarding launches How to set a foundation for a successful launch How having the right systems in place can free you up to be creative How to make sure you're targeting the right people And so much more!
