Mapping of the Gene Network That Regulates Glycan Clock of Ageing

BUFFALO, NY- January 3, 2024 – A new #research paper was #published in Aging (listed by MEDLINE/PubMed as "Aging (Albany NY)" and "Aging-US" by Web of Science) Volume 15, Issue 24, entitled, “Mapping of the gene network that regulates glycan clock of ageing.” Glycans are an essential structural component of immunoglobulin G (IgG) that modulate its structure and function. However, regulatory mechanisms behind this complex posttranslational modification are not well known. Previous genome-wide association studies (GWAS) identified 29 genomic regions involved in regulation of IgG glycosylation, but only a few were functionally validated. One of the key functional features of IgG glycosylation is the addition of galactose (galactosylation), a trait which was shown to be associated with ageing. In this new study, researchers Azra Frkatović-Hodžić, Anika Mijakovac, Karlo Miškec, Arina Nostaeva, Sodbo Z. Sharapov, Arianna Landini, Toomas Haller, Erik van den Akker, Sapna Sharma, Rafael R. C. Cuadrat, Massimo Mangino, Yong Li, Toma Keser, Najda Rudman, Tamara Štambuk, Maja Pučić-Baković, Irena Trbojević-Akmačić, Ivan Gudelj, Jerko Štambuk, Tea Pribić, Barbara Radovani, Petra Tominac, Krista Fischer, Marian Beekman, Manfred Wuhrer, Christian Gieger, Matthias B. Schulze, Clemens Wittenbecher, Ozren Polasek, Caroline Hayward, James F. Wilson, Tim D. Spector, Anna Köttgen, Frano Vučković, Yurii S. Aulchenko, Aleksandar Vojta, Jasminka Krištić, Lucija Klarić, Vlatka Zoldoš, and Gordan Lauc from Genos Glycoscience Research Laboratory, University of Zagreb, Novosibirsk State University, Lomonosov Moscow State University, University of Edinburgh, University of Tartu, Leiden University Medical Center, Delft University of Technology, Helmholtz Zentrum Muenchen, German Center for Diabetes Research (DZD), King's College London, Guy's and St Thomas' Foundation Trust, University of Freiburg, University of Rijeka, German Institute of Human Nutrition Potsdam-Rehbruecke, University of Potsdam, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, Chalmers University of Technology, University of Split School of Medicine, Algebra University College, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and Institute of Cytology and Genetics SB RAS performed GWAS of IgG galactosylation (N=13,705) and identified 16 significantly associated loci, indicating that IgG galactosylation is regulated by a complex network of genes that extends beyond the galactosyltransferase enzyme that adds galactose to IgG glycans. “Here, we conducted a GWAS of IgG galactosylation phenotypes in a study that almost doubles the sample size (N=13,705) compared to previous GWAS of IgG N-glycome [33] and focused on the genes with in silico evidence for involvement in the IgG galactosylation process.” Gene prioritization identified 37 candidate genes. Using a recently developed CRISPR/dCas9 system, the researchers manipulated gene expression of candidate genes in the in vitro IgG expression system. Upregulation of three genes, EEF1A1, MANBA and TNFRSF13B, changed the IgG glycome composition, which confirmed that these three genes are involved in IgG galactosylation in this in vitro expression system. “Further research is needed to fully elucidate [the] functional mechanism behind their role in ageing and to reveal the complete network of gene interactions regulating the complex process of IgG glycosylation.” DOI - https://doi.org/10.18632/aging.205106 Corresponding authors - Azra Frkatović-Hodžić - afrkatovic@genos.hr, and Gordan Lauc - glauc@genos.hr Visit our website at https://www.Aging-US.com and connect with us: SoundCloud - https://soundcloud.com/Aging-Us Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/AgingUS/ X - https://twitter.com/AgingJrnl Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/agingjrnl/ YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/@AgingJournal LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/aging/ Pinterest - https://www.pinterest.com/AgingUS/ MEDIA@IMPACTJOURNALS.COM

An ethnography of advertising in postmillennial South Korea, Flower of Capitalism: South Korean Advertising at a Crossroads (U Hawaii Press, 2022) details contests over advertising freedoms and obligations among divergent vested interests while positing far-reaching questions about the social contract that governs advertising in late-capitalist societies. The term "flower of capitalism" is a clichéd metaphor for advertising in South Korea, bringing resolutely positive connotations, which downplay the commercial purposes of advertising and give prominence to its potential for public service. Historically, South Korean advertising was tasked to promote virtue with its messages, while allocation of advertising expenditures among the mass media was monitored and regulated to curb advertisers' influence in the name of public interest. Though this ideal was often sacrificed to situational considerations, South Korean advertising had been remarkably accountable to public scrutiny and popular demands. This beneficent role of advertising, however, came under attack as a neoliberal hegemony consolidated in South Korea in the twenty-first century. Flower of Capitalism examines the clash of advertising's old obligations and new freedoms, as it was navigated by advertising practitioners, censors, audiences, and activists. It weaves together a rich multi-sited ethnography--at an advertising agency and at an advertising censorship board--with an in-depth exploration of advertising-related controversies--from provocative advertising campaigns to advertising boycotts. Advertising emerges as a contested social institution whose connections to business, mass media, and government are continuously tested and revised. Olga Fedorenko challenges the mainstream notions of advertising, which universalize the ways it developed in Transatlantic countries, and offers a glimpse of what advertising could look like if its public effects were taken as seriously as its marketing goals. A critical and innovative intervention into the studies of advertising, Flower of Capitalism breaks new ground in current debates on the intersection of media, culture, and politics. Roman Pevzner discusses his Honorary Lecture, "Surface and borehole seismic monitoring of CO2 geological storage." Geological carbon capture and storage (CCS) or sequestration is a critical component of CO2 emission reduction, which aims to alleviate global climate change. Geological carbon storage always requires a subsurface monitoring program, and seismic methods play an important role. In this conversation with host Andrew Geary, Roman explains why a subsurface monitoring program is necessary for geological carbon storage and the range of seismic methods used to monitor CO2 storage. He discusses how the Australian CCS projects featured in the lecture highlight the evolution of the seismic monitoring technology used for sequestration. He also explores the advantages and disadvantages of permanently mounted seismic sources and characterizes passive data analysis. This conversation explores the goal of this lecture, the perfect audience for this talk, and the one question Roman hopes attendees take with them. Carbon capture and storage will play a major role in the future of geophysics, and this conversation helps demonstrate possible paths. Listen to the full archive at https://seg.org/podcast. Something is making the Earth spin faster and days shorter "Since 2016 the Earth started to accelerate," Leonid Zotov, a researcher at Lomonosov Moscow State University, told CBS News. "This year it rotates quicker than in 2021 and 2020." Days have become much longer since the Earth's formation. As The Guardian notes, around 1.4 billion years ago, a rotation of the Earth took less than 19 hours. Days have gotten longer by, on average, around one 74,000th of a second each year. But the planet's rotation can fluctuate on a day-to-day basis. Matthew 24:21-23New King James Version 21 For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be. 22 And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; but for the [a]elect's sake those days will be shortened. 23 “Then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!' or ‘There!' do not believe it. Is this what Jesus was describing? Are we seeing the days becoming shorter and will we continue to see the Earths rotation become quicker until a day becomes shorter by hours not just seconds? This is just my opinion. Elena Kosilova is a Doctor of Philosophy, Associate Professor of the Faculty of Philosophy of the Lomonosov Moscow State University. She graduated from the biological faculty of Moscow State University but left biology for the sake of philosophy. Her research interest includes: Philosophy of Science, from Philosophy of Psychiatry to Philosophy of Mathematics. In the philosophy of mathematics, she is especially interested in the Pythagorean motives that have appeared recently, and the general question of the relationship between mathematics and physics. Philosophy of the subject. This is close to philosophical anthropology, but the question is not only what a person is in general, but more in what he/she does, thinks, how he/she solves existential questions. Especially important is the question of the interaction of the subject with the Others, this interaction is multilateral and often conflicting (and should be so). There are about a dozen paradigms of subjectivity, which differ in the interpretation of the subject and his relationship to the world. Epistemology and gnoseology, and in them especially - the philosophy of understanding. There are different approaches to what an understanding is, for example, philosophers argue whether it is a mental entity. What does it mean to understand another person? What does it mean to understand a logical law or a mathematical theorem? All these questions do not have an unambiguous answer (it is enough to compare Husserl and Wittgenstein). This is Special English. I'm Ryan Price in Beijing. Here is the news. China is studying how to retrieve and reuse manned spacecraft in its future missions. The chief engineer of the nation's manned space program said China's next goal is to reuse manned spacecraft to make its space exploration cost-effective. Reusable manned spacecraft are a Holy Grail of space exploration. The United States developed partially reusable manned spacecraft capable of reaching low Earth orbit. But they were all retired in 2011 due to high costs and risks, including an accident in 2003 that killed seven astronauts. The chief engineer did not go into any more details on the project, but stressed his team's focus on saving costs, giving an example from the Tiangong space lab series. Chinese scientists have managed to incorporate all tasks planned for the third generation of the lab into the second generation. There has been no need to develop the third generation. He said China's space station will be completed around 2022. It will be a green model, with highly advanced and budget-saving facilities in flight control, power supply and waste recycling. Earlier this month, US rocket developer SpaceX achieved a world first by landing one Falcon rocket on a carrier at sea. China was paying close attention to such innovation and was testing its own reusable rockets, promising a breakthrough before the end of 2020. This is Special English. The Ministry of Education has told parents its efforts to ensure more children from poor backgrounds getting a college education will not hurt the chances of students from more affluent parts of China. The ministry said its changes to the enrollment policies of this year's gaokao, the national higher education entrance exam, will not mean children from developed parts of China will lose out. The event follows a heated discussion in China about the changes to the gaokao enrollment policies. A recent directive from the ministry means there will be a redistribution of cross-provincial quotas for some provinces. According to the directive, universities in some more developed provinces with rich tertiary education resources will have to take a large number of students this year from less developed regions. The more developed provinces include east China's Jiangsu Province and central China's Hubei Province. The two provinces will take in more students, who pass the gaokao, from areas including Tibet and Xinjiang in western China. The quotas for larger enrollment are understood to be significantly increased from previous years, but there are no hard numbers available. The directive created a public outcry from parents in two provinces. Some parents protested in front of local education bureaus, claiming the redistribution will mean fewer local students being enrolled to colleges and universities. The ministry has said that the move is aimed at further boosting equal access to higher education and narrows the gap between developed regions and their poor counterparts. The university entrance exam is seen by students and parents in China as one of the most important milestones in life. This is Special English. Chinese police have launched a mobile app to encourage witnesses to report the whereabouts of missing or trafficked children. More than 5,000 anti-trafficking police will provide updates to the app on receiving new reports of missing children. Users near the location where a child disappeared will receive push notifications, including photos and descriptions of the missing child. The scope of these push notifications will be expanded over time. Information will be available to the public at the platform's official Sina Weibo account. Police will cooperate with new media outlets and mobile apps to encourage the public to help in anti-human trafficking work. You're listening to Special English. I'm Ryan Price in Beijing. The first Chinese-Russian university plans to enroll its first group of students this year. Located in Shenzhen in Guangdong province, the MSU-BIT University marks a milestone in educational cooperation between China and Russia. Postgraduate students in Nano science and ecology will be enrolled in the new Shenzhen MSU-BIT University in September after it gets official approval from the Ministry of Education. The university is going to enroll undergraduates from next year. MSU-BIT is run by Lomonosov Moscow State University, the Beijing Institute of Technology and the Shenzhen government. It is the first such cooperation between Chinese and Russian universities. The university plans to enroll a total of 5,000 students from home and overseas in the near future. Thirty to 50 percent of them are expected to come from countries along the ancient Silk Road. Students will be equipped with multilingual capabilities, and the classes will be taught in Chinese, English and Russian. The number of students studying in each other's countries has been growing. More than 16,000 students from Russia studied in China last year, while more than 25,000 Chinese students studied in Russia. This is Special English. China's first Confucius classroom in a prison has opened in East China's Shandong Province. The classroom opened in Luzhong Prison in central Shandong as part of a charity program funded by the China Confucius Foundation. The provincial prison management bureau said the prison will pilot a series of changes, including classroom and library design, as well as training prison instructors in Confucian teachings. The activities aim to improve the prison's cultural atmosphere. The classroom will feature Chinese calligraphy, literary classics and moral education. Named after the ancient Chinese philosopher, Confucius schools and classrooms are generally run as non-profit public institutions to help foreigners understand China through language and culture classes at overseas universities. The first such institute was established in 2004. You're listening to Special English. I'm Ryan Price in Beijing. Almost 1,200 water-saving projects have been built in Beijing, saving up to 100 million cubic meters of water every year. Beijing's water authorities said water permeable bricks, sunken green fields and rainwater recycling facilities have been widely adopted in the city. Beijing recycled and utilized 160 million cubic meters of rainwater last year. Beijing has been listed as one of the pilot "sponge cities" in China. The city's urban planning authorities said more wetlands, filtration pools and permeable public spaces will be added to make the city "spongier". Beijing once relied heavily on groundwater. Excessive exploitation has led to decline of groundwater levels and subsequent subsidence. You're listening to Special English. I'm Ryan Price in Beijing. A doctor from Shanghai has saved a woman who passed out on an international flight from Shanghai to Los Angeles in the United States. After receiving treatment from the doctor, the woman finally regained consciousness. Zhao Yingchun is the chief doctor at Shanghai Songjiang District central hospital. He took the flight to attend his daughter's graduation ceremony on May 12. During the flight, Zhao heard a public announcement seeking help for a fainted passenger. He rushed to the passenger trying to give her immediate emergency treatment. The middle-aged woman had suddenly fainted and had been in a coma after returning to her seat from the lavatory. The medical devices provided by crew members were only a stethoscope and a blood pressure monitor. He could not hear her blood pressure due to the noise made by the plane engine. But Zhao still managed to treat the passenger. Fifteen minutes later, the woman mildly reacted, and after 40 minutes, was able to talk. He stayed with her for one hour, checking her breath and her heart beat every 5 minutes, until she was completely recovered. As the plane landed at Los Angeles airport, the crew members thanked Zhao for his timely aid and tried to give him 150 US dollars as a reward. Zhao did not take the money, saying it was what a doctor should do. The airline staff offered him free air miles and a souvenir to show their appreciation. This is Special English. Double-amputee climber Xia Boyu is around 1,500 meters away from reaching the summit of the world's highest mountain. Xia has reached a height of 7,280 meters on the 8,848-meter-high Mount Everest. According to a live broadcast on news portal sina.com, by the end of the day, the 65-year-old climber was expected to have reached camp C4, where he failed in his first attempt to reach the summit 41 years ago. Xia was born in Chongqing in southwest China. A violent storm in 1975 kept him at the camp at an altitude of 8,600 meters. He was then a new member of China's national mountaineering team. The attempt cost him both his legs. He suffered severe frostbite on his feet, after he gave his only sleeping bag to an ailing teammate. He became disabled. Xia says his confidence comes from years of hard physical training, which was only interrupted for a short period of time when he was diagnosed with cancer 10 years ago. Equipped with artificial limbs, Xia has climbed many mountains, with four of them being higher than 6,000 meters above sea level. You're listening to Special English. I'm Ryan Price in Beijing. The talk reports on an early stage of on-going research on the application of computational semantic techniques to detect phishing, i. e., mass mailings intended to sweep up personal details for later malicious use by the phishers themselves or their potential customers. Our personal experience as targets of phishing has shown that the texts are getting increasingly polished, plausible, and sophisticated, often making it difficult even for humans to tell phishing from bona fide, if unadvised messages. In this talk, we will demonstrate, on a few examples, how Ontological Semantic Technology can help to achieve machine natural language understanding that allows the computer to match and, augmented by the best existing technologies, possibly exceed human ability to detect the meaning-based clues pointing to phishing and to reason accordingly. We will also discuss the problem of automatic phishing detection and share our thoughts on applying the most feasible and promising techniques on a large corpus of phishing emails. About the speaker: Dr. Julia M. Taylor has been associated with CERIAS since 2008, first as a Visiting Scholar while working full-time on implementing OST at a start-up and, since August 2011, as a Research Assistant Professor. She earned her Ph.D. in CSE from the University of Cincinnati in 2008, following the MS in 2004 and BS in CS and BA in MATH in 1999. She has published widely on various aspect of NLU, including pioneering work on computational humor detection as well as fuzzy logic and, most recently, NL IAS.Dr. Victor Raskin, Distinguished Professor of English and Linguistics (with a courtesy appointment in CS), has been a member of the CERIAS Internal Advisory Board since its inception and Associate Director for Graduate Education since 2002. He earned all of his degrees in Mathematical and Computational Linguistics from the Lomonosov Moscow State University in 1970, 1966, and 1964, respectively.
