In this episode, Baylor Men's Basketball S&C Coach, Charlie Melton, joins me to talk about the program's first National Championship. We talk about what was different this year, in comparison to previous seasons. We also catch up on how much things have changed in the decade that has passed since I was getting my start in his weight room. We cover 5-Zone training, the unique responsibilities he has at an elite basketball program, how he prioritizes training variables at different times and phases of the year, how he coaches nutrition via behavioral change, and some advice he would have given himself, and me (or others just starting out in the sport performance industry) 10 years ago. We also cover just how important the right kind of music is in the weight room, and how the right beat can turn a dragging session into a very productive, energetic, and memorable workout. Charlie Melton enters his 17th season working with the Baylor men's basketball team as director of athletics performance in 2021-22. Melton joined the Bears in June 2005 after spending four seasons as a full-time strength coach at Florida State University. A 1998 graduate of the University of Memphis, Melton earned a master's degree in exercise and sport science from his undergraduate alma mater in 2000. He worked as a graduate assistant in the strength department under Todd Stroud and with Memphis' Exercise and Sport Nutrition Research Lab under current Baylor professor Dr. Richard Kreider from 1998 to 2000. Coach Michael Hill is a Master Strength and Conditioning Coach and the Director of Sports Performance at Georgetown University, where he oversees the development of over 20 teams and over a thousand student-athletes. As a former student-athlete (shout-out to Florida Gulf Coast University!) myself, I was really excited to dive deep into leadership, strength training, and building character! If the thing you are doing right now broke away, what would you be doing? How else would you define yourself? What would you think and do if every thought and action was recorded? Selecting for character is key to building a good team Giving back brings some of the greatest fulfillment we can experience in life

Dr. Dan Baker – Master Strength Coach and Coach Educator Dan Baker has been a part of the elite strength and conditioning scene in Australia and around the world for well over 20 years. I caught up (by phone) with the President of the ASCA and we discussed various elements of coach education, athlete development and communication, and some specifics around Strength and Power Development, specifically Velocity Based Training. Sure, this Podcast is probably more for the hard-nosed Strength and Conditioning Coach, but, if you have an interest in fitness generally, it’s still a very interesting conversation with an elite and professional coach who has spent a career training, teaching, researching and authoring massive amounts of valuable training information for coaches in Australia and around the world to learn from. He’s a coach’s coach. Dan speaks the practitioner’s language too. Be specific, attack the key elements of conditioning, nothing replaces hard and heavy training and science is the cherry on top, not necessarily the foundation of everything. It’s a refreshing approach, clear, concise yet delivered with the authority and precision of a man who has dedicated his life to the pursuit of elite athlete physical development and training. Dan may be part of the OG crew, but let’s be clear, this is a guy who has produced outstanding results at the highest level, across multiple sports and levels, all-the-while producing significant amounts of research and education for others. Dan is certainly the type of guy who you want as President of your National Body. So, get your science of strength text books out, grab a pen and paper and get ready to take some notes, cause Dr Dan is in the house! About our drink: Herradura Reposado Tequila. We want to thank the parishioner who kindly donated this bottle of tequila for TCMS. This tequila is double rested for unmatched taste. Herradura Double Barrel Reposado is the product of a novel, two-step aging process. The first involves resting the tequila in charred American White Oak barrels for 11 months. It's then moved to new charred barrels and aged for an additional 30 days. This creates a rich, dark amber colored liquid and a smooth yet complex flavor profile not found in any other Reposado, with hints of cooked agave, vanilla, allspice, clove, and oak. About the gear: We had the assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach for OSU with us! Come on, we wanted to pick his brain on working out so our gear this week is a gym membership and/or a workout buddy. Bio: Current: Director of Sports Performance at Western Oregon University where she oversees the strength, conditioning, nutrition and all-around well-being of over 400 student athletes in 13 sports. Past: Spent five years at Washington State University in addition to stops at Colorado State, Ohio State and Western Michigan. Interview Notes Cori I know I left a lot out of your journey to WOU, so tells us a bit about where you're from and how you got to where you are now. Active family Dad was a coach From Juneau, AK and became a competitive skier and soccer player Broke two vertebrae in her back while competing in college (Fort Lewis College); let to an interest in strength/conditioning Coach Dale Lloyd approached her about pursuing strength/conditioning as a career; set her on the path to where she is now Long-lost Facebook message from Coach Lloyd to her saying how proud he was of her highlights the impact of a mentor's word What was your dad like as a coach, and what did you learn from him about how to lead a team? Consistency High standards Long-lasting relationships with his athletes How to stay strong in the face of circumstances Talk about the importance of developing trust in order to impact and influence the student-athletes you lead; and won't give 100% until they know you know what you're talking about; need to have confidence in yourself without being cocky consistency – senior with a good relationship with her faces the same consequences for mistakes as a freshman fairness the head coaches who are your colleagues harder road than the athletes this is their livelihood will follow their lead as long as within my philosophies Get some quick wins; show progress early What would you want the men in the audience to know or understand about what it is like for a female working in the strength/conditioning profession? Always healthy to put yourself in other people's shoes Always having to prove myself Three females in the country overseeing strength/conditioning for football, all Division II Can't internalize critical comments/conduct; let it roll off; realize it says more about them than you Must find a way to move on/forward from criticism What have you found to be the best techniques to communicate with today's young adults? Don't take yourself too seriously Must be approachable. In the past, wouldn't let student-athletes in to personal life. That won't work now. They need to know that you're not perfect; that you have had failures. You get to observe other coaches interact with their teams every single day; what sticks out to you as something that the great leaders do or have in common? Sonny Lubick – Colorado State football coach – organized, consistent, cared for you, gave her a chance to lead football summer training Fear of disappointing a person more powerful that fear of the person Can you help us sift through the various popular exercise programs (e.g. P90X, cross-fit) and what should those of us just trying to lead healthy lifestyles should be doing? Moderation and consistency Find what works for you Think carefully about the training/background of who is leading the training What habits have been key to your success? Eat in the morning; same thing each day Have a routine, whatever it is that works for you How do you approach balancing success at work and success at home? Scott Hebert is a Strength Coach who has worked with Gold Medalists, Stanley Cup Champions, MLB, NLA athletes and some of the meanest MMA athletes on earth! So why have so many of you not heard of Scott? Because he's not all about that. What he is about is building champions! Years later we reconnect for a once in a lifetime conversation about the science of sport performance training, where the industry is going, what it takes to make real performance changes in your athlete and the future of training! Scott and I were having so much fun chatting and catching up we went overtime and had to break the podcast into 2 separate episodes so we could fit the 1 and 1/2 hour conversation into 2 episodes. I hope you enjoy this amazing coach that pushes me to learn more, do more and be better. Listen, learn and enjoy! #DreamBig #OverDeliver and be #Undeniable.
