Court is in session this summer, at least the Court of Appeal for Ontario, which is being asked by the provincial government “to answer whether the Ontario's igaming regime would remain lawful under the Criminal Code (of Canada) if the overall size of the potential gaming audience of the scheme, otherwise known as its liquidity, is expanded to include players outside of Canada”. The latest session, which took place July 6, included legal representation for the Attorney General of Ontario, the Attorney General of British Columbia, members of the Canadian Lottery Coalition, the Canadian Gaming Association, Flutter Entertainment (owners of PokerStars and FanDuel), NSUS Group Inc. and NSUS Limited (proprietors of GGPoker), and the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke. For their respective perspectives on the court proceedings, the Gaming News Canada Show welcomed back CGA president/CEO Paul Burns and Jack Tadman, the managing partner of GME Law. Burns walked us through the CGA's role in supporting the province's request and provided some history around cross/jurisdiction/border online gaming and daily fantasy sports. Tadman added a layer or two, too, to that topic and spoke about what intrigues him about the case and the participants. Burns had some thoughts last month's Canadian Gaming Summit and welcomed Kiron Interactive as the association's newest member. Both Burns and Tadman addressed the ever-evolving nature of regulated sports betting and gaming, and we also asked Tadman for his reaction to the ongoing push by Senator Marty Deacon to pass Bill S-269, National Framework on Advertising for Sports Betting Act. This week, Senator Marty Deacon introduced Bill S-269, the National Framework on Advertising for Sports Betting Act to put guardrails in place on sports wagering advertising across Canada's gambling (and media) industries. Deacon and fellow Senator Brent Cotter joined the latest episode of the Gaming News Canada Show podcast presented by Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP to explain the rationale for introducing the act, and the process to get the bill passed. “We're trying to make sure there's some guardrails. We're looking at pulling that [advertising] in, but we're not saying, ‘no more''” Deacon told the GNCS audience. “It's a balance. I'm not going to deny that, but I think it's important that we keep that as our laser focus.” Great Canadian Entertainment executive Chuck Keeling joined the show from Vancouver to discuss Tuesday's official opening of the Great Canadian Casino Resort Toronto, a massive property that when completely finished, will include a gaming floor with slot machines, gaming tables and sports betting kiosks, a 400-room luxury hotel, a 5,000-seat entertainment theatre, a 250,000-square-foot green roof, and plenty o' parking. Woodbine Entertainment has also been lobbying for customers of both the new casino resort and the adjacent Woodbine Racetrack to have direct access to public transit, Keeling confirmed. Regular guests Amanda Brewer of Kindred Group and Betano's Kris Abbott provided their thoughts on the proposed sports betting advertising bill, Toronto's new $1-billion casino resort, and some final musings on last week's Canadian Gaming Summit. Cabinet has officially "ditched" cadre deployment in favour of merit-based appointments throughout the public service. Officially the policy is called the National Framework towards the Professionalisation of the Public Sector and was - quite silently, one might add - adopted by cabinet on 19 October. The DA's shadow minister for public service and administration Dr Leon Schreiber, believes quite emphatically, that this is the most significant policy shift in this country's democratic history. It's a battle he and his party have been fighting for years. Adoption of a policy versus implementation remains a sticking point. For this reason, Schreiber tells BizNews correspondent Michael Appel, the court battle to abolish cadre deployment must continue because the ANC cannot defend such a policy when cabinet has already rejected it. Skillnet Ireland in partnership with the University of Limerick (UL) are launching the first enterprise-led micro-credential programmes dedicated to climate action in Ireland. The stackable micro-credentials, developed by Skillnet Ireland's Climate Ready Academy, will enable participants to develop tailored sustainability charters and action plans for their organisation across the areas of energy, sustainability and waste and circularity while also achieving recognised third-level certification on the National Framework of Qualifications. The micro-credentials may be stacked, over time, leading to a full Level 7 award accredited by the University of Limerick. Micro-credentials are small, accredited courses designed to meet the demands of learners, enterprise, and organisations. The programmes launched today are the ‘Energy Leaders', the ‘Waste and Circular Economy Leaders' and the ‘Sustainability Leaders' programmes which are designed to incentivise and support employees in developing practical environmental improvements for their businesses. Discussing the programmes at the launch, Paul Healy, Chief Executive, Skillnet Ireland, said: “The climate action leadership programmes launched today play a pivotal role in developing the talent needed by industry and in meeting the targets of the Government's Climate Action Plan. “These new micro-credentials offer participants the opportunity to achieve a level 7 Certificate. This expertise will be used by leaders in practical ways to make their businesses more sustainable and climate ready. We look forward to working with industry and academic institutions as we develop more programmes through our Climate Ready Academy,” added Healy. University of Limerick President Prof. Kerstin Mey said: “This is a great example of how we collaborate with industry through Skillnet Ireland and the Climate Ready Academy to deliver a new form of learning which is based on the micro-credential earned through the participation in each individual programme. The stackable micro-credentials will enable participants to apply practical skills for climate action within their business and obtain a Level 7 Certificate awarded by our University.” Earlier this year, Skillnet Ireland published research on ‘Talent for the Green Economy' in partnership with the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI). The report found specific skills gaps which are holding back businesses when it comes to developing and implementing sustainability strategies. The new programmes are one of Skillnet Ireland's new initiatives designed for removing these identified barriers. Ken Stockil, Director of Climate Ready Academy, said: “This new suite of Climate Action Micro-credentials will play a critical role in helping organisations transition to a more sustainable future. They will benefit individuals in building recognised third-level qualifications in areas such as Energy Management, Circularity and broader Sustainability and will benefit businesses by offering them a powerful mechanism to upskill employees and develop tangible actions to tackle climate change within their business.” Commenting at the launch, Senator Róisín Garvey said: “I am delighted to be here at the launch of the new Climate Ready Academy Leaders Programmes with Skillnet Ireland and UL. What we need now is clear green action and I believe that this programme has a huge part to play in leading companies to taking the action that we need now.” More about Irish Tech News Irish Tech News are Ireland's No. 1 Online Tech Publication and often Ireland's No.1 Tech Podcast too. The series covers federal programs in climate financing, energy efficiency, climate adaptation, and conservation at landscape scales. The final briefing in the series will focus on landscape conservation. Ecosystems often span county, state, tribal, and national borders. Wide swaths of area must be managed across jurisdictions and in collaboration with stakeholders on the ground to maximize social and environmental benefits, including ecosystem services such as water filtration and carbon sequestration. Furthermore, networks of intact and connected core habitats, working lands, and open space facilitate the migration of species, which is especially important for allowing animals to adapt to climate and land use changes, as well as for reducing human-wildlife conflict and wildlife-vehicle collisions. Panelists will dive into the benefits of coordinating conservation efforts at the scale of large landscapes and showcase opportunities to advance an inclusive and durable national framework for landscape conservation.

Experts and practitioners will discuss how these programs are working on-the-ground to deliver value to constituents across geographies, in both urban and rural settings.

On this episode of AGSC, Tamsyn and Paniz are joined by...each other, to talk about the reason they first met years ago: campus sexual assault, and the profound uselessness of the university administrators getting paid to address it. Having spent many years organizing, researching, and writing about the issue since then, they have seen how universities spend all their time and money on programs like consent education and sweeping policy change, without seeing any actual reduction in the number of students being assaulted on their campuses. We follow a tribute to Jack Mundey with a win for part time workers at McDonalds and a feature on the #NoConcessionsNTEU campaign against proposals by the NTEU national executive negotiated behind closed doors with Universties Australia and the Federal Government beginning in March with the onset of the covid-19 virus. The National Framework the NTEU national executive wants to take to the membership May 21 will they hope include the avoidance of stand-downs without pay; no new external appointments; redundancies to apply only where the work is ceasing permanently; asuals to receive the work where it is still required to be done; and superannuation payments to be maintained. If they can achieve these things then we would consider offsets that allow employers to implement some cost-saving measures in exchange, such as deferral of pay rises, limited fraction reductions and direction to work other duties. They say it is temporary, They say it is to save jobs. They say workers need to take a hit to keep the industry afloat. And despite the secret negotiations and the limited discussion hampered by constrains of zoom conferencing which gave dissenting voices only one minute to disagree or as has been alleged muting to ensure no discord the National Executive of the NTEU is going ahead with it's strategy of taking a national vote of membership May 21.I spoke to Liam Ward from RMIT in Melbourne about the #NoConcessionsNTEU campaign which has mushroomed around the country in response to the National Framework purposed.

In this week's program Chuck is sharing some podcasts that you might find interesting.  Maybe even worth subscribing to? Thinks start out with our own The Ethanol Report, sponsored by the Renewable Fuels Association.  In it Cindy talks with RFA CEO Bob Dinneen about the latest RFS news which has a big impact on rural American and agriculture in general. Then Beltway Beef is showcased, the podcast of the National Cattlemens Beef Association.  This episode, hosted by Ed Frank, features NCBA's Ashley McDonald talking about the U.S. Roundtable for Sustainable Beef's release of its National Framework for Beef Sustainability. Next up is Chase Adams, former farm broadcaster (you can tell from that voice!) hosting the ASI Sheepcast with Kay Johnson Smith, Executive Director of the Animal Agriculture Alliance. For over 30 years, the Alliance has been on the front lines of ensuring consumers and customers are correctly informed on how food and fiber is produced by America's sheep and livestock producers. Not exactly a podcast but produced regular nonetheless is Ed Czerwein's Weekly Box Beef Report. The Choice cutout is following the normal grilling season rally helped by rib and loin primal products. And finally you'll hear a teaser for the new AAEA The Agricultural Communicators Network, Ag Comm Network Podcast.
