Examineradio - The Halifax Examiner podcast

It's been a few years since Halifax had a dedicated queer theatre festival, but that changes April 26 with OutFest. Produced by Page1 Theatre, the event's goal is to "provide a platform for multi-disciplinary artists to create stories that reflect our community, both past and present." Page1's artistic director Isaac Mulè stops by to give an overview of this year's program and chat about the festival's origins in Kitchener ON. Theatre maker Katie Clarke is also on board to dig into Can You Remember How We Got Here, the one-person show they wrote and are starring in (maybe).

We wish we could tell you this week's topic is some weird cryptid or a yet to be discussed alien species. Unfortunately, it's something much worse (and Canadian!) "Butterbox Babies" is a reference to the size of the boxes a deranged Canadian couple used to bury 100s of babies across 3 decades in the early 20th century. How did this couple get away with it? Did the entire town turn a blind eye? If an American couple buys a baby in Canada, what's the exchange rate? We ask the tough questions this week as we examine The Butterbox Babies. Plus, Kyle still thinks he lives in Star Trek (TNG to be precise). Conspiracy Bot is apparently a fan of the show Earth 2 (and Antonio Sabàto Jr.), and the fellas discuss Canadian foods (ketchup chips anyone?). All of that and more on the podcast that had never heard of Butterbox Babies, but assumed it was someone’s nickname in high-school - Hysteria 51.Special thanks to this week’s research sources: BooksThe Butterbox Babies | Bette CahillPapersScandal and Social Policy - https://journals.lib.unb.ca/index.php/acadiensis/article/view/10719/11433VideosButterbox Babies (Official Trailer) - https://youtu.be/j-DSosDBUZgButterbox Babies - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0122418/WebsitesIdeal Maternity Home Survivors - https://www.idealmaternityhomesurvivors.com/the-story/Wikipedia - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ideal_Maternity_HomeCBC - https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/closed-adoption-records-1.3840560CBC - https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/ideal-maternity-home-butterbox-babies-family-search-1.3875973Canadian CRC - https://canadiancrc.com/Butterbox-Babies_Killers-Child-Trafficking-Canada/Butterbox-Babies-Baby-killers-child-trafficking-selling-babies-Canada-adoption-story.aspxSympatico (Via WayBack Machine) - https://web.archive.org/web/20010808023239/http://www3.ns.sympatico.ca/bhartlen/PAGE1.HTM

Virginia Beach native Bubba Jenkins has had a tumultuous life leading into his NCAA Division I championship a few years back. After putting the wrestling shoes away (at least for the most part), he joined the world of MMA. Now he's rising up the ranks in Bellator MMA and is on a four-fight win streak after beating Thiago Meller at Bellator 126.On Episode 108 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast, we visit with "The Highlight Kid" to talk about his progression in MMA, life being a new father, his transition and his career goals.Jenkins also touches on his opinion of Ben Askren's snub by the UFC, where he's improved as a fighter, learning how to matchup with different fighting styles and how much he wants a rematch with LaRue Burley, who gave Jenkins his first MMA loss back in September of 2013 at Bellator 100.When we shifted the conversation to wrestling, Jenkins discussed the hurdles he faced in high school and dealing with bad choices, his recognition at a recent Arizona State football game, how much he roots for David Taylor and of course, his affinity for crab legs -- which he purchases unlike some other athletes. We also get some insight from Bubba on his best high school wins, his favorite college matches and who he'd want to fight in the world of MMA.Check Bubba out at www.gobubbajenkins.comThe Short Time Time Wrestling Podcast is proudly sponsored by Flipswrestling. When Nestor Taffur walked off the mat in Oklahoma City after falling to Rutgers' Anthony Perrotti in the Round of 12, he walked off the mat as the very last competitive wrestler in the sport of wrestling for Boston University. The New Jersey native had proposed to his then-girlfriend earlier in the tournament, so it was a spectrum of emotion. As Taffur realized the program he'd given so much to was about to go away, he spent more and more time with his college coach, Carl Adams, and realized he wanted to be a coach. In Episode 107 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast, the news is positive for Taffur, who recently joined the coaching staff at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania under head head coach Mike Rogers. It's Taffur's first coaching job and it's at a place he nearly found himself competing for coming out of high school.Taffur talks about his excitement and anticipation to help the Diplomat wrestling program, which recently received a $5 million dollar endowment, preserving the wrestling program at the tiny private Liberal Arts school that's Division III in every other sport (save squash).Taffur also goes into detail on his feelings about the Boston University administration and how it stripped him and his teammate of having a school they could go back to, cheer on and potentially even donate. It's a retrospective about the past and a prospective of the future, chock full of candid responses and sound-off moments.

During his tenure at Central Michigan as an Associate Athletics Director, Derek van der Merwe was the chairman of the NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee. He's seen a lot of changes of the past decade in the sport. Now, he's settled in as the Athletics Director at Austin Peay State University, or simply Austin Peay, a Division I school in Clarksville, Tenn. We'll talk with van der Merwe on the following topics and more on Episode 105 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast.First off, you've been at Austin Peay since June of 2013, how are you liking the digs down there in the Ohio Valley Conference?Let's go back in time a bit before we hit the main subject matter, which is the changing landscape of college athletics, you're originally from South Africa and came to the states as a youth. Started playing football late in high school and then walked on at CMU. As a walk-on athlete, what really drew you to college athletics? After your playing career ended, you went right into athletic administration. When did you know you wanted to follow that career path?So now you're at a school that doesn't have wrestling, but how actively are you keeping up with the Division I wrestling scene? So how many people have been pestering you to add wrestling at Austin Peay? I mean, you've already got a veteran wrestling broadcaster associated with the school in Van Stokes! Now on to the main topic of discussion. The Ed O'Bannon verdict came down and while it doesn't have the whole "blow up the system" type of reaction, there are still some things that will impact schools of various size. How do you think this outcome will impact schools like your alma mater at Central Michigan? What about schools like Austin Peay, which despite not having wrestling, is still going to figure out what your going to do.Is this decision going to be detrimental to programs many like to call "mid-majors?"You've also been a part of gender-equity reviews over the years. Are college sports fans missing the whole Title IX part of the outcome.Do you think full scholarship athletes should be paid in addition to what they're already getting? Do you think the partial scholarship athletes might be entitled to more cost-of-attendance types of stipends considering many of them are working jobs just to pay the difference in their tuition? So now we'll get to another topic and this kind of goes along with the little bit of prodding earlier. There's been a lot of growth at the enrollment-driven colleges at Division II and below, but very little movement with new programs in Division I. In a perfect world, what would have to happen for Austin Peay to start a wrestling program?

It's been 18 years since the tragic murder of wrestling hero Dave Schultz. On Episode 97 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast, we talk with Dave's widow Nancy on life since and her take on the upcoming Foxcatcher film. She's also working on her own documentary about Dave. Some of the topics discussed on Episode 97 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast with Nancy Schultz are:How did you discover wrestling and what made you fall in love with the sport?People in wrestling know the story and they're going to hear about it a lot more with the November release of Foxcatcher. In your words, how do you explain to people who might not be old enough to remember the happenings of that January day? Before we get into the nuances of the Foxcatcher movie, you've been working on a documentary for a number of years about Dave. What's the status of that project? What story are you trying to tell?I'm a relatively new parent, my daughter just turned two. I personally can't fathom being a parent by myself. How difficult was it for you to raise Xander (28) and Danny (25) during the years after the tragedy? From a historical standpoint, I was just getting into wrestling when this all happened. There's a generation of wrestling people who haven't been told about who Dave was. How important is it for the wrestling community to remember the legacy of not just Dave, but what the Schultz brothers meant and mean to wrestling? The Foxcatcher director Bennett Miller has hit some major home runs with his films Moneyball and Capote. Mostly from mark's point of view, but How were you approached? How were the conversations you had with him when this project was first pitched and throughout the process? Is there a bit of baited breath waiting for the theatrical release? How much interaction have you had with Mark Ruffalo, who plays Dave in the movie?Do the trailers give you chills? From what you've seen so far, does Steve Carell capture the essence of John duPont? It's been 18 years, how hard is it to be constantly reminded about the man who took Dave from us or do you have a different way of projecting it?The Dave Schultz Wrestling Club was one thing that preserved the legacy, the club is no longer active, but what are some of your favorite memories about the club?Who are some of the personalities you remember the most. I understand you have some Ray Brinzer stories ... but then again, who doesn't?Foxcatcher is essentially going to be from Mark's point of view. He's sometimes taken a combative stance some of the factions in wrestling. How often do you speak to Mark and do you talk to him about those sorts of topics?

Short Time from Fargo rolls on as Jimmy Kennedy and Nick Marable earned berths on the U.S. Freestyle World Team and we talk with announcer Sandy Stevens, who has announced 43 of the 44 Junior National freestyle championships. Men's Freestyle - July 24Best of Three Match 2Two big four-point moves and one takedown was all that Jimmy Kennedy needed to beat 2012 Olympic bronze medalist Coleman Scott 10-0 in the second match at 61kg to claim a spot on the U.S. World Team for the first time. The match was slowed due to the cut above Scott's left eye. Kennedy won the Yasar Dogu back in February in Turkey. When Nick Marable last stepped on the raised platform in Fargo with a big match, he came away as Tennessee's first Cadet freestyle champion back in 2003. On Thursday, Marable stepped off the mat after his 8-2 victory over James Green as a member of the U.S. World Team. Marable's victory in the second match in the best-of-three series saw a lot of the trademark counter offense he's known for. He also showed proficiency in par terre, turning Green twice. Best of Three Match 1Jimmy Kennedy converted a double leg takedown with 41 seconds remaining to break a 2-2 tie and top Coleman Scott 5-2 in the first match of a best-of-three series at 61kg. Scott jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a pair of pushouts before Kennedy got on the board with a pushout of his own on a double leg attack with 14 seconds remaining in the first. Kennedy tied the score at 2-2 with a second pushout from a double leg attempt and went ahead with 41 to go with another double attempt. A late attack by Scott drew ooohs from the crowd, but Scott couldn't get a third supporting point down to gain control. He challenged and lost, giving Kennedy the fifth point. Action as a little slower at 70kg as Nick Marable topped James Green 2-1 in the first match of the best-of-three series. Green took the lead 1-0 with a minute to go in the first after scoring a caution point after Marable was unable to score after being put on the shot clock. In the second, Marable initiated a halfshot, getting Green to bite and counter with a shot of his own. Marable battled the position and got the go-behind for the takedown and the 2-1 lead, which held for the victory.

There was a lot to take in on Tuesday at the Fargodome in Fargo, North Dakota. We had Greco-Roman Phase II World Team Trials, Junior Greco-Roman Finals and Junior Women’s freestyle finals. Tuesday’s the craziest day here in Fargo, so sit back, relax and take your time, because it’s time for another Fargo Update coming up NOW on the Short Time Wrestling Podcast. LET’S START BY GETTING INTO ALL OF THIS STUFFThe Army's Justin Lester made his seventh U.S. World Team with two straight victories over Pat Smith of the Minnesota Storm in the Phase II Trials at 71kg. Lester, a World bronze medalist in 2006 and 2007, made things look easy in the first match of the best-of-three series, teching Smith 9-0 in 54 seconds. The second time around, it was a bit more of a battle as Lester got past Smith 2-1. Smith took the early lead with a pushout, but Lester matched him with a pushout of his own to effectively take the lead. Smith tried pushing the pace, but Lester tacked on a pushout with 32 seconds remaining to cement his lead and join the team heading to Uzbekistan in September. Joe Rau, who won a Junior Greco-Roman title for Illinois back in 2009, earned a spot on the U.S. World Team at 80kg after defeating 2012 Olympian Ben Provisor in two straight matches. Rau beat Provisor in the first match 1-0 with the decisive point coming on Provisor's second caution. In the second match, Rau, wrestling for the Minnesota Storm, used a pushout from a front headlock position in the first period. It would be the only point of the match as Rau would again win 1-0. It's Rau's second World Team berth of the summer. He recently competed at the World University Championships in Hungary at 85kg.JUNIOR GRECOCalifornia's Randon Miranda started out the night with a 14-4 techincal fall victory over Connecticut's Zack Murillo at 100 pounds. Miranda captured the second leg of the Junior Triple Crown. He won the Folkstyle Nationals earlier this year. Miranda led from start to finish, but got in trouble early after Murillo stepped over and put Miranda to his back. Miranda built a 7-2 lead until Murillo stepped over again, but Miranda avoided trouble and then scored three more takedowns to ice the victory.Arizona's Danny Vega won the state's ninth overall Junior Greco-Roman title with a 7-2 victory over Todd Small of Georgia at 106. At the Cadet level, Vega as second in Greco last year and won a freestyle championship. Like Miranda, he's still eligible to win the Triple Crown after winning Folkstyle Nationals earlier this year. Idaho's Dorian Sapien took home the title at 113 pounds with a 12-6 victory over Kansas' Corbin Nirschl. Sapien fell behind early, but hit a big four-point armspin that changed the pace of the match. Sapien won Idaho's ninth all-time Junior Greco-Roman title. Skyler Petry's stellar summer continued as the Minnesota native topped New Jersey's Anthony Cefolo 2-1 at 120 pounds. Petry scored a takedown early in the match and only gave up a late point. Petry, bound for the University of Minnesota, becomes Minnesota's 34th Junior Greco-Roman champion. Utah's Taylor Lamont wrestled up to the Junior level and came away with a national title. Lamont doesn't compete on Sundays, and he's still in the Cadet age group, so since the Junior tournament started on Monday, he competed there and it didn't seem to make much difference. At 126 pounds Lamont fell behind early to Kegan Calkins of Illinois, but after Lamont tied it up with a takedown, he launched Calkins with a nice reverse lift for five points. It's all the scoring that would take place in Lamont's 7-2 win. New York's William Koll picked up a title with a punishingly dominant 11-0 victory at 132 pounds over New Jersey's William Kui. Koll countered a headlock attempt to get a takedown, then hit a big five pointer to build a 7-0 lead. Koll then finished Kui off scoring a takedown and a two-point gutwrench. Koll is the son of Cornell head coach Rob Koll.

McKee started to close the gap and got within 8-7 before Keeley hit a beautiful front headlock throw for four points to essentially put the match out of reach. California's Nicolas Aguilar captured the championship at 94 pounds beating Brandon Meikel of Utah 7-2. Aguilar built a comfortable 4-0 lead in the early part of the first period with a takedown and a gutwrench. Meikel converted a bodylock for a takedown to cut the lead in half. Meikel again went on the offensive, trying to hit an armspin in the second period, but Aguilar stuffed the attempt and came out on top for the takedown to extend his lead to 6-2. A late pushout would put the final score at 7-2. Arizona crowned its 11th Cadet Greco-Roman champion as Roman Bravo-Young finished off a headlock at 4:56 to pin Michigan's Dominic Lajoie at 100 pounds. Bravo-Young had four technical falls and two falls during his championship performance. Ian Timmons became the second champion in Cadet Greco-Roman from Nevada. Timmons pinned Drew West of Iowa at 3:35 to win gold at 106 pounds. West got up 5-0 on a four-point throw from the headpinch position. He would add an appreciation point on a lift attempt moments later. Timmons answered by countering a West throw attempt for two exposure points. Then Timmons would launch West for five points to take the lead. The lead would extend to 11-5 after a takedown and a two-point gutwrench. In the second period, West got caught on his back with a front headlock roll and Timmons held and got the fall. Illinois' Austin Gomez won his second straight Cadet Greco-Roman championship by defeating Bryce West of Iowa 18-8 at 113. Gomez was nearly pinned in the first period and fell behind early, but after rallying to tie the score at 8-8, Gomez put up 10 straight points and countered every one of West's short offense attempts. INTERVIEWTexan Coltan Williams won his state's 10th Cadet Greco-Roman championship. Williams defeated North Carolina's Wilson Smith 8-5 at 120 pounds. Smith started things off with a big four-point throw before Williams hit what is sure to be one of the five-pointers of the year to take the lead 5-4. Williams extended his lead to 8-4 after a pushout and a takedown. Smith tried to work his offense from double unders and Williams was penalized one point for fleeing the hold late in the bout.

For the last 15 years, the wrestling program at Southern Virginia University in Buena Vista, Virginia has competed in relative obscurity. While a competitive program in the National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NCWA), the Knights athletic program was looking for an identity. The school, which was in the NAIA, kept wrestling on its listing of sports, but it was still a club program. SVU was also affiliated with the U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association, which was formerly known as the U.S. Small College Athletic Association. The team would show up at open tournaments and have sporadic duals, but the role of the program in the varsity landscape was still uncertain. On July 8, Southern Virginia University elevated its club wrestling program to varsity status. Logan Davis, a 2009 graduate of SVU, took over the program two years ago after the previous coach was fired and the then Athletic Director was ready to axe the sport from the school's club offerings. Davis stepped up to keep the program alive.Southern Virginia cleared a few more hurdles and applied for NCAA membership and they were granted provisional membership. That set the stage for a new AD to come in and bring the program to a fully-supported athletic option at the varsity level. On Episode 77 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast, we talk with Logan Davis, who is now taking a job that was once a role to keep a club sport alive, to coaching at the NCAA Division III ranks. Some of the topics Davis talks about with Southern Virginia University's program in this episode of Short Time are:Saving the wrestling club. The impact Ferrum College's program had on Southern Virginia elevating the program.Thoughts on potential new programs in Virginia at the Division III level. The school's theology, which embraces the LDS (Mormon) values.Recruiting kids at a small, private, niche school.Timeline for postseason competition and scheduling. What he and his program developed by competing with the NCWA and fledgling wrestling support from the USCAA.Short Time is sponsored by FlipsWrestling. In 2005 after graduating from San Ramon High School, Smith doubled up, winning Junior National titles in both freestyle and Greco-Roman.For Smith, high school was the offseason with his focus squarely on being a national champion. After winning the U.S. Greco-Roman Trials in June in Daytona Beach, Florida, Smith earned the right to represent the United States at the World Championships for the second year in a row.On Episode 76 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast, we catch up with the larger-than-life personality that is Robby Smith. He touches on a number of topics, but is very outspoken on what the U.S. and the youth coaches around the country specifically need to do to create a greater appreciation for Greco-Roman wrestling.Smith talks about how a chance question to his dad, who never wrestled, put him on the wrestling mats for the first time, why he chose Greco-Roman wrestling instead of freestyle, going through the recruiting process when he'd never won a high school state championship. One of Smith's big talking points was about the importance of all three styles of wrestling. He headed to Northern Michigan after high school, but quickly wound up fighting for an opportunity at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. Nine years later, he's the old guy at the OTC and he's not even 30 yet.Other topics discussed with Robby Smith include:His relationship with his coaches, including Momir Petkovic and Mark Halvorson. The foundation of the Community Youth Center in Concord, California.Answering a fan-submitted question about "Why is Greco boring?"His emerging rock star status in Iran at the Greco-Roman World Cup.What wrestling can do for people. His move to heavyweight from 96kg.His favorite food spot in Colorado, which is The Keg in Manitou Springs. And of course, his beard.Follow Robby on Twitter @rtdsmith.To follow the Greco-Roman wrestlers who threw in their questions, @Biseks_Stache and @PeteKJr, they'd probably appreciate it, too.

Talking Title IX with Christina Hoff Sommers – Short Time Ep. 73

June 23 marked the 42nd anniversary of Title IX, an anti-discrimination law that's not only opened doors for women, but worked to eliminate discrimination in federally funded institutions nationwide. When applied to college athletics, Title IX is almost a dirty word. With three ways to comply with Title IX, schools often focus on prong one, commonly known as proportionality. While the other two prongs are allegedly equal for compliance, the Department of Education issued a clarification in 1996 calling proportionality a "safe harbor," meaning schools with similar ratios of male and female athletes to their student body would be viewed as compliant. In 2003, the Department issued another clarification, removing "safe harbor" from any prong, insisting all three prongs were equal with compliance. While the Department of Education points out there's nothing in the law that states cutting men's programs is required for compliance, schools have cut men's programs or cut both men's and women's programs in order to get their proportionality numbers in line with prong one.In this episode of Short Time, Christina Hoff Sommers talks Title IX. Sommers is currently a resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy Research, the brains behind the Factual Feminist and an outspoken critic of proportionality. She's also served on the national advisory board for the Independent Women's Forum.Sommers recently penned a piece called Title lX: How a Good Law Went Terribly Wrong on June 23, 2014 for TIME Magazine's website. You can read the story here. We talk with Sommers about how groups like the National Women's Law Center and the Women's Sports Foundation have taken women's rights with college athletics to a new level. That level is attacking colleges with proportionality ratios that are out of whack with their student enrollment, but ignoring the gender gap that continues to grow regarding enrollment at many of the same schools they give a failling grade.Sommers gives an alternative feminist viewpoint and gives some background on the growth of women's sports and how she hopes proportionality will be eliminated from Title IX compliance because it's not needed. It's probably something the activist groups don't like to hear coming from the feminist side of the table.More information on Christina Hoff SommersChristina Hoff Sommers on Twitter @CHSommers

For those watching, they might have been shocked at what sport Rosmarino chose to showcase that made her unique -- wrestling. So how does the Salem, Virginia native and reigning Miss Virginia USA incorporate wrestling? Easy, she was a wrestler at Glenvar High School. The 22-year-old Radford University graduate talks about how she got started in wrestling and what made wrestling so important to her through high school, college and still to this day. Unable to compete after her junior year due to chronic headaches, she stuck around the sport and eventually worked with the NCWA program at Radford, a small private school near Virginia Tech in Southwest Virginia.Rosmarino gives a lot of credit to her high school coach, a two-time state champion from Glenvar named Jamie Soltis, as well.Rosmarino does motivational speaking and a big part of it, as she puts it, is from the skills and lessons learned from wrestling. Some questions Arielle Rosmarino answered in Episode 71 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast were:There's sometimes a stigma about girls and women who wrestle and on the opposite side of the spectrum, there's a stigma about girls and women who do pageants. In 2003, you were convicted of a crime you to this day, insist you did not commit. This prompted your family to create freejordan.org, where letters and information was distributed to the public about your plight. The end result was you spent eight years in prison. This is obviously a situation you'll have to still answer questions about. How are you handling it all?How much did the loss in 2012 to Chas Betts in the best-of-three Olympic Trials finals sting and how much did that factor in to you continuing your wrestling career through the 2016 Olympic Cycle? You actually left the University of Northern Iowa to play a semester of Division III football with your brother, who was attending Division III Bethel at the time. People with cerebral palsy may have reduced range of motion at various joints of their bodies due to muscle stiffness. The effect of cerebral palsy on functional abilities varies greatly. Some people are able to walk while others aren't able to walk. Some people show normal to near normal intellectual function, but others may have intellectual disabilities. So Joey had an idea, donate his used wrestling shoes to kids who needed them. What started with just a few local clubs has gone national ... and even international. Wrestle In My Shoes has the support of several high profile wrestlers around the country. Short Time talks with both Joe and Joey Butler about how the program started, how many shoes the non-profit distributed the first year and the mission and goal behind starting such an adventure.
