We are very excited to speak with Jorge R. Gutierrez and Sandra Equiha. They are amazing partners creating art and animations like Nickelodeon's 'El Tigre, the Adventures of Manny Rivera', the movie 'Book of Life', the Netflix series 'Maya and the Three', and most recently the 'American Citizen' episode from the Netflix series 'We the People'. Their stories are beautiful, with characters who seek acceptance for themselves and from their families, who deal with flaws and excel in spite of them. Powerful lines like 'If it is to be, it is up to me' or 'No retreat, no surrender!' are mantras from their films. There is also a beautiful contrast in the working styles of these two artists, and their collaborations are as much about art as they are about love and life. Jorge and Sandra have a son who is diagnosed with Autism. Following a conversation with his parents about the similarities of his younger years and for those of his son, Jorge was also diagnosed with autism at age 40. He explains how his diagnosis explained who he was and is today. He is an advocate for his family and for representing disability in the industry.

I was hoping to get some book recommendations to fill the void one set in each place. I hope you are all staying well and safe. Thanks -Lauren 2. hi! I’m looking for sociological-ish/historyish/journalism-ish nonfiction  books based in the American Midwest. I’m trying to curate a list to learn more about the area(I’m not American myself). So far I have Negroland, Janesville, Columbine, The Warmth of Other Suns, Prairie Fires, The Worst Hard Time. It’s all very scattered, and I don’t mind that, so I hope you can help me find more!

The first weekend of major college wrestling came and went, so now that you’ve given up on your college football team for the season, because you know the College Football Playoff is going to put at least one team in there that didn’t earn it, this is Short Time Shots, a mostly daily look at the scores and more that went on today in the world of wrestling, I’m award winning yadda yadda yadda Jason Bryant. In Duals: Limited schedule, so we’ll lead off with the only Division I dual on the docket, which saw North Dakota State beat visiting CSU Bakersfield 24-9 in Fargo. No confirmation if the winner got to pick where to eat dinner, but I’m sure Roger Kish would make his former coworker Manny Rivera eat somewhere nice, not like super fried Turf fare. There wasn’t a super individual match of note, but NDSU’s Cam Sykora picked up a technical fall at 133 pounds over Chance Rich. NDSU improved to 1-0, while the Roadrunners (meep! meep!) fell to 0-2. Reinhardt, ranked second in the NAIA, shutout Division II Emmanuel 45-0. The Eagles scored five falls, with two-time All-American Antonio Stewart earning a fall at 2:15, while fellow All-American Michael Carew registered one at 2:04. Central Oklahoma, ranked No. 13 in Division II, won nine out of 10 bouts on Sunday to beat Drury 41-3. The Bronchos, yes, with an H, kinda like Sctanley, with a C, picked up seven bonus victories on the day. In more mixed duals, Division II Coker opened up its season with a 30-11 win over Division III Averett, which starts its first season under new head coach Blake Roulo. In the NJCAA, Iowa Western, the Reivers, which means something like River Pirate or pissed off chicken, shut out Otero 49-0 and Colby 46-6 to start off the season. Just kidding about that chicken thing, but a the Reiver has a long and colorful history. Well, that’s what the first few words of the Iowa Western website say about it. In Tournaments: Southeast Open: Nothing crazy earth-shattering at the Southeast Open at the Bergland Center in Roanoke, the best sports venue in the Salem-Roanoke area. I remember when Campbell was so bad. Like, losing to Delaware State bad. Well, those days are long gone – and sadly – so is Del State’s program. But the Camels had four individual champions to lead all teams in the Open Division. Noah Gonser topped Mizzou’s Allan Hart at 133, Josh Heil beat North Carolina’s Zach Sherman 5-4 at 141, Quentin Perez pinned North Carolina’s Kennedy Monday at 165 and a beefed up Andrew Morgan majored Chattanooga’s Matthew Waddell at 184. Missouri, fresh off its loss on Saturday to Virginia Tech had three champs with Brock Mauller winning at 149, Jarrett Jacques at 157 and Connor Flynn at 174. Virginia Tech, North Carolina and West Virginia each had a champ. In the freshman/sophomore division, Ferrum’s Levi Englman picked up the title at 133, not bad for a Division III kid. And guess what, another Poquoson shout out as Mason Fiscella of Appalachian State won the title at 184. His dad Ed wrestled veterans for a long time, and actually gave me my start in sports as I was a press box assistant for the semipro football team, the Peninsula Poseidons back in 1991. Seriously. Princeton Open: Patrick Glory went fall, tech, tech, tech en route to a title at 125 pounds, but there weren’t any results that were super OMG. Notably, high school standout Beau Bartlett entered at 141 and took fourth. Columbia’s Matt Kazmir won the weight, going major, tech, decision, fall. He beat Logan Brown of Army in the finals. Brown beat Bartlett 3-1 in the semifinals. Mike D’Angelo returned to the Princeton lineup after a year off and picked up the forfeit finals win over Matthew Kolodzik, who is taking this year off. At 157, Rider’s Jesse Dellavecchia claimed the title beating Princeton’s Quincy Monday 4-2. Monday beat Lehigh’s Josh Humphreys 11-5 in the semis. Hofstra’s Ricky Stamm with a title at 165. His prize is he gets to borrow some of Dennis Papadatos’ hair product. Finger Lakes had two hammers pick up W’s before they enroll at Cornell next year. Chris Foca won at 174, while Lewis Fernandes won at 285. Fernandes only pinned one guy, far below his high school average. He good. Battle at The Citadel: Stanford, American and ODU went 1-2-3 at the first Battle at The Citadel. There wasn’t a ton of stuff that shakes things up in terms of the rankings, other than ODU’s Killian Cardinale knocking off American’s Gage Curry at 125 pounds and Stanford’s redshirt freshman Real Woods beating ODU’s Sa’Derian Perry 2-1 at 141 pounds. Woods earned an escape and a late stall point to pick up his first official ranked W of his career. He also beat American’s Sal Profaci in the semis, you might remember him from Michigan. American’s Kizhan Clarke had a breakout performance, stopping Stanford’s Requir van der Merwe 11-5 at 149. Presbyterian’s first wrestling since the 1950s took to the mats as Mark Cody’s first year squad had Austin Stith finish third at 197 pounds and Jacob Brausser take fifth at 125. Clarion Open: Brock Zacherl returned to wrestling and claimed top honors at 149 pounds. He didn’t navigate the most brutal field, but he’s one of the Golden Eagles top hopes for the program’s first All-American since James Fleming in 2013. Clarion’s Greg Bulsak will now have people following his progress after beating highly touted freshman Michael Beard, wrestling unattached from Penn State, 11-8 in the finals. Last year, Beard beat Bulsak 13-9 in the finals as he was deferring enrollment. Late Saturday: Southern Maine won a pair of duals, beating Plymouth State 36-9 and Rhode Island College 29-9. Also in Division III, Olivet beat Manchester 40-10. From the Newsletter – I want to call this placing top six, but you know what, we have enough wrestling puns and podcast-type goofiness. By the way, I also want listeners and readers to know that only free stories are posted in the Daily Wrestling Newsletter. If something’s paywalled, it won’t be here, that goes for our subscription wrestling sites as well as our daily newspapers. I do recommend turning off your ad-blocker when prompted on these wrestling stories and on wrestling-friendly sites you frequent. Nick Corey offers up another one of his Corey’s Stories on com discussing the intrigue the Olympic redshirting situation around the country brings to college wrestling this season. Also, while not in the newsletter, it should be noted that Willie Saylor has posted via Twitter he’s left Flowrestling. His handle changed to WillieAtWillie, which one fan pointed out looks like Will, Eat Willie. Worthlessly stupid Facebook groups were set ablaze by the news. Some people have too much time on their hands. Say what you want about Willie, he got you talking. Both USA Wrestling and Five Point Move have information regarding the three medals won in Sweden. From United World Wrestling, a feature on Egypt’s Mohamed El Sayed, who won the U23 World Championship in Greco-Roman, which was his second world title in as many weeks. He won the World Military Games title a bit ago. I like to draw attention to new programs around the country and one of the newest, Central Methodist, an NAIA school in Fayette, Missouri, got off to the races with its wrestling program by hosting an open. Right off the bat, you go and host a tournament. Are you trying to kill your SID? They’re led by three-time Division II All-American Terrell Wilbourn. Jim Nelson of the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier writes a pretty solid preview of the Upper Iowa wrestling team. It should be solid, Nelley’s one of the best in the biz. Keeping things in Iowa, where the local press has always done the sport better than most places, Steve Batterson of the Quad-City Times features Iowa’s Spencer Lee and how his preseason schedule working football games goes unnoticed, but his international schedule this college season will not. Unrelated: One of the bars I routinely did karaoke at in college was named Batterson’s. The owner charged people for tap water on 50-cent taco night. I trust Steve wouldn’t do such a thing. It’s Short Time Shots for November 2, 2019. In Duals: Fueled by victories from B.C. LaPrade at 157 pounds and Hunter Bolen at 184 pounds, No. 16 Virginia Tech picked up its first win in school history over Missouri, beating the No. 9 Tigers 29-10 in Blacksburg. The Hokies won the last four matches of the dual, which included a forfeit at 133 and a 26-second fall by Mitch Moore at 141 pounds to close out the win. 24 Virginia went 2-0, beating Maryland 34-6 and Division III Southern Virginia 50-3. Maryland picked up the first win of the Alex Clemsen era with a win over Southern Virginia 42-6. Of note for people back home, Patrick McCormick from Poquoson, Virginia - that’s my hometown - registered a forfeit W at 125 against Southern Virginia. It’s my show, I’ll mention irrelevant forfeit wins by kids from my hometown if I want. Rutgers opened up the season with three wins, picking up a win over newly branded Division I LIU 43-3, the top-ranked team in Division II, Pitt-Johnstown, 22-9 and Division III Centenary 38-6. Edinboro opened up year two of the Matt Hill era with three wins, two over non-Division I foes Mercyhurst North East and Ashland and its first MAC win over new conference mate Kent State. In the 29-6 win over Kent State, the top win there was Jacob Oliver’s pin over Andrew McNally at 174 pounds. As SID Bob Shreve wrote, Edinboro eclipsed last year’s win total in one day. While listed as an exhibition, it’s a notable that the revived wrestling program at Division II Fairmont State in West Virginia picked up a win over Garrett Community College of Maryland 30-22 on Saturday. It’s the second win in as many days for a new or reinstated program in the state. On Friday, Davis & Elkins opened with a win. In Division III, Messiah won its Messiah Invitational with four champions - Josiah Gehr at 133, Garrett Cornell at 141, Nick Barnhardt at 149 and Stephen Maloney at 157 pounds. Messiah outdistanced second-place Ursinus5 to 81. Up in Ithaca, Johnson & Wales took home top honors as three Wildcats won titles - Hayden Brown at 133, Gabriel McDaniel at 141 and Da’mani Burns at 149. Baldwin Wallace was second and picked up a pair of champions - Stanley Bleich at 157 and Zeckary Lehman at 197. Host Ithaca was third and also had three champs. Keeping it Division III, Millikin’s Big Blue beat Elmhurst 29-18 Mixing things up, we have LeRoy Gardner’s University of the Ozarks of Division III picking up a 41-10 win over NAIA Lyon College in a battle of Arkansas schools. Out West, North Idaho of the NJCAA beat NAIA’s Eastern Oregon 26-19. Keeping with the NAIA, Oklahoma City, coached by Olympian Sam Hazewinkel, blanked Oklahoma Wesleyan 55-0. In Tournaments: Michigan State Open: Ohio State’s Sammy Sasso make his official college debut one to remember as he trounced the field in East Lansing. Sasso had three falls and two technical falls - including a tech over Michigan’s Kanen Storr in the finals. Sasso also decked Purdue’s Nate Limmex in the quarters. Purdue’s Kendall Coleman probably had the biggest breakout performance of the tournament, winning the title at 157 pounds. Among Coleman’s wins were Eric Barone of Illinois, Will Lewan of Michigan, Zac Carson of Ohio and Anthony Artalona of Penn - All known commodities in college wrestling. At 197, Ohio State’s Kollin Moore edged Oklahoma’s Jake Woodley 6-4 in sudden victory, while Michigan’s Mason Parris topped Central Michigan’s Matt Stencel 9-2 in the finals at 285. Cowboy Open: Probably the most notable result came at 133 pounds where true freshman Theorius Robison of Northern Colorado beat Wyoming All-American Montorie Bridges 3-2. Now, the craziest thing to me is what I’m about to tell you. Ben VomBaur wrestled collegiately at Boise State, where he was a two-time All-American. He won the Cowboy Open, according to his Facebook page in 2001 and 2002. He finished tied for third - due to the match limit rule - at 133 pounds doing the old man entering the tournament thing. Only, he wasn’t. Ben entered the tournament with Will VomBaur, who attends the Air Force’s Prep School and Vance VomBaur, a high school junior out of Windsor, Colorado. Will didn’t place in the Amateur Division at 125, but Vance won it at 133 in the same age bracket, which is typically for college freshmen and sophomores. Yeah, those are Ben’s kids! He wrestled in a college open with his kids. Holy crap, that’s cool. I met Ben a long time ago at the U.S. World Team Trials in 2005 in Ames. Late Friday: The Battle on the Midway did conclude after the first Short Time Shots of the season was released. Army West Point beat Fresno State 29-9 to conclude the kickoff of the season out in San Diego. In Arkansas, Williams Baptist blanked Central Baptist 48-6. What's on the docket: We’ve got open tournaments at Princeton, Clarion, near Virginia Tech in Roanoke at the Southeast Open and the first Battle at The Citadel, appropriately, at The Citadel. Menlo hosts the Menlo Open, Lycoming’s hosting an invitational, CSU Bakersfield closes out its upper midwest run as Manny Rivera stops at North Dakota State, a spot he used to coach. Down south, Emmanuel faces Reinhardt, which started the year ranked No. 2 in the NAIA. What up Jeff Bedard! Placing Top Six (From The Newsletter): Tim Hands over at FivePointMove.com has all the Greco-Roman coverage you can handle, but if you’re a fan of Greco, you might not be able to stomach some of the stuff coming from Budapest, as it was yet another disappointing day for Greco as the U.S. got shut out of medal contention. Timmy has all the breakdowns, as well as a story on the U15 trip out to Europe as well. Clay Cunningham of the Bakersfield Californian pens a pretty solid story on CSU Bakersfield 133-pounder Chance Rich heading into the Runners’ dual on Sunday against North Dakota State. From my buddy Mike Catullo out in Pennsylvania, who tipped me off to one of his wrestlers needing a heart transplant. The York Daily Record did a story on the launch of the GoFundMe. You can read about it in the newsletter. Mike was a former assistant at Franklin & Marshall, Millersville and Maryland before moving back to PA to coach and teach at Red Lion High School. This is the same school that hosted Lock Haven vs. Arizona State last year. When you think wrestling news, you think the Morrison County Record in Minnesota. Well, if you’re a Pierz wrestling fan, yes, that’s spelled P-I-E-R-Z, then you know that’s the most trusted name in news. In all seriousness, I love stories from local media promoting longtime coaches, so that’s why we have included the story of Mark Jensen’s upcoming induction into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame’s Minnesota chapter. From Eric Knopsnyder of the Tribune-Democrat in Johnstown, Pennsylvania - yup, one of the guys from PA Power Wrestling: Bo Bassett, who I recently saw win the Preseason Nationals in Iowa, is a finalist for Sports Illustrated Kids SportsKid of the Year. He’s a seventh grader at Forest Hills Middle School in Sidman, which is just outside Johnstown. I’m pretty sure that VomBaur story is going to get some traction nationally once people hear about it. He’s a seventh grader at Forest Hills Middle School in Sidman, which is just outside Johnstown.•I’m pretty sure that VomBaur story is going to get some traction nationally once people hear about it. It's the return of Short Time Shots, a mostly nightly collection of scores and more from around the world of wrestling. I'm your host Jason Bryant, and the only bad jokes I know, are dad jokes. If you grew up in the 80s, you might like my references. Top Results: The first Division I dual meet of the year came and went in sunny San Diego, which is Spanish for something involving a whale. The sixth-ranked Wisconsin Badgers opened up year two of the Chris Bono era with a 31-8 win over Fresno State at the "AFC Duals," which is not a West Coast version of KFC. You know how Carl's Jr. is the Western version of Hardees, well, sorry to disappoint. Seth Gross returned to action with a fall at 133 pounds over NCAA qualifier Gary Joint in probably the dual's most notable match. Wisconsin's ranking as a dual meet squad might be a little lofty. Unranked Army West Point pushed the Badgers to the limit as the Badgers escaped 16-15 as Trent Hillger closed things out again for UW. Navy also beat Fresno State 25-9 before the night concluded with Army West Point beating Fresno State 26-10 on the Battle on the Midway. It was on a BOAT! This episode was actually held up so we could get the final score of that dual and not just fake it. No. 7 Minnesota opened up its season with a 28-9 win over CSU Bakersfield at Maturi Pavilion. The dual saw Manny Rivera return to his old stomping grounds. Top match there was freshman Brayton Lee holding on to beat Russell Rohlfing at 149 pounds. Elsewhere in Division I, Chattanooga topped SIUE 29-14 and Cleveland State beat a pair of Division III teams, John Carroll 27-14 and Case Western Reserve 51-(-1). In Division II, Davis & Elkins won the school's inaugural dual meet against Alderson Broaddus 36-12. Falls were registered by 125-pounder Shawn Moore and 157-pounder John Finnerty. The Senators jumped out to a 36-0 lead in an impressive debut. Hat tip to head coach Jerry Boland, know that guy from years coaching at Camden Catholic down at the Virginia Duals. No. 1 Pitt-Johnstown opened up its season beating East Stroudsburg 38-8. Also in Division III, Brockport blanked Penn State Behrend 50-0, UW-Platteville edged Cornell College 18-16. Isaac Wiegel's fall at 125 proved to be the key bonus points for Mike DeRoehn's Pioneers. My apologies to Jim Heath. Don't worry, it's an inside joke. In the NAIA, Jamestown (N.D.) beat York (Neb.) 42-7 and Midland 48-3. Overseas, no Americans will be wrestling for medals as the first day of Greco-Roman completed at the U23 World Championships in Budapest. On the women's side, Kayla Miracle, a four-time WCWA champion during her time at Campbellsville University, finished with a silver medal in women's freestyle at 62kg. What's on the docket: On Saturday, November 2, we have action at a number of opens, including Michigan State, Jamestown, Rochester - neither of those last two are in New York - as well as finishing off action at the Ithaca Invitational in Division III. There's duals across the country with the big one coming in Blacksburg as No. 9 Missouri faces No. 16 Virginia Tech at noon. LIU makes its return to Division I wrestling as the Sharks are in a quad at Rutgers with Centenary (N.J.) and the aforementioned Mountain Cats of Pitt-Johnstown. Placing Top Six (From The Newsletter): Willie Saylor of Flowrestling probably had the biggest nugget of news on the day, tweeting that Ohio State true freshman Greg Kerkvliet, a Minnesota native fresh off getting hosed at the U23 World Championships, has hit the NCAA transfer portal. Coupled with the recent news that Kyle Snyder left Columbus to train at the senior level in State College, Buckeye fans heads have officially exploded. Thoughts and Prayers to Dan Ransick. While Willie's tweet was deleted 15 minutes later, Flo did re-post the news shortly thereafter. Andy Hamilton of Trackwrestling’s Writing Time feature discusses how injuries and the relaxed hardship rules from the NCAA have changed how wrestlers look at their seasons. Among those featured are Northern Iowa’s Jacob Holschalg and Iowa’s Michael Kemmerer, both All-Americans. Ed Gallo of Bloody Elbow features the college career of Edinboro four-time All-American Gregor Gillespie and why his credentials should also be treated highly in the UFC. Ed’s also written a book, released this past summer on Notre Dame College undefeated four-time Division II champion Joey Davis. Ed’s got some chops, give his stuff a look. HawkeyeSports.com's Chris Brewer pens a solid feature on Iowa's redshirt freshman heavyweight, Tony Cassioppi. In a day where most of the content created by media relations offices centers around quick videos and easily sharable content, Iowa still does the well-written feature. This is no exception. By the way, do yourself a favor and go to HawkeyeSports.com, click on the roster and look for a wild swath of hair in the back row. Then scroll and look for Jeremiah Moody. He has now supplanted Lincoln McIlravy as my favorite all-time Hawk. In other news, the NAIA released its rankings prior to Thursday's competition and Grand View is ranked #1 in the nation. In other news, water, is wet. Speaking of Iowa, Iowa City's West High School announced it was launching a girls wrestling team. This isn't in the newsletter, but I thought it was relevant enough to mention here. Finally, closing the news with more Iowa stuff, The Predicament continues its Inside the Rivalry series with a look at Jesse Sundell. On The Network: The second part of my series focusing on the drop of St. Olaf wrestling in Minnesota is in the feed and featured on The Guillotine.com. What happens when you throw out crap excuses for cutting a sport, and you refuse to talk about it to the media? My wrath. Today's episode is really special because we have Emmy Award winner Jorge Gutierrez with us.  Jorge is a Mexican animator, painter, writer and director who, along with his wife Sandra Equihua, created the multiple Annie and Emmy Award winning animated television series, El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera, for Nickelodeon. Born in Mexico City and raised in Tijuana, Jorge has completed various films, cartoons, illustrations and paintings exploring his love affair with Mexican pop and folk culture. With an unmistakable can-do attitude, Jorge shares how he views feedback as an opportunity to improve and how he has learned to put his ego aside during the alchemical process of working through and incorporating the suggestions of others. He explains what he finds challenging about working for someone else and why he is willing to play any part in the film production process to serve the greater vision. We also dive into the invaluable lessons he's learned at art school, how his challenges as a Latino immigrant made him stronger and how fear has been a positive driving force in his life. Finally, Jorge reminds us about the importance of falling in love with the process instead of always focusing on the end result. So be sure to join us today for expert insight and a good laugh! For more information about artists, links and resources from this episode, please visit https://notrealart.com/emmy-award-winning-artist-jorge-gutierrez/ Key Points From This Episode: What to expect from the upcoming Not Real Art Conference. Where Sourdough's name comes from. The importance of putting your ego aside in your creative work. Synthesizing and distilling colleagues' commentary on his writing. Why there's no cheat sheet to writing. How he broke out of the boxes in the industry. The problem with art schools not always offering integrated classes. Why specializing is not necessarily the best option. The problem with many artists. Competing by outworking. The fall of 2D and the rise of CG animation. How schooling is no guarantee for work. The challenges of being a Latino immigrant. More about his father's influence in his life. The role of family. Why Generation X is very pragmatic. Learning form failure and hard work. Focusing on the process, not the result. Jorge's first solo art show. And much more!

Oh, it’s about that time, it’s about that time, it’s ABOUT THAT TIME! The whistles of college wrestling season didn’t actually blow for the first time on Thursday night, they actually started in September with the California Community Colleges. But the four-year programs and the rest of the junior colleges got underway this week and this is your daily dose of the wrestling scores and more, that’s right, it’s Short Time Shots, the coffee you need for your morning wrestling commute, I’m your host Jason Bryant. Yes, I’m stunned I still have a voice after Budapest. The first Division I dual of the season saw the Chris Bono regime in Madison start with a victory. The 18th-ranked Wisconsin Badgers won four of the last five bouts to pull away from a scrappy Buffalo team 25-12. Connor Brown opened up the dual with a fall, Ben Askren-style, who was actually calling the action live on Flowrestling. Buffalo’s Bryan Lantry scored a solid win at 141-pounds over transfer Tristan Moran, while All-American Evan Wick started the Badger roll with a 14-1 major decision at 165 pounds. Ryan Christensen, Mason Reinhardt and Trent Hillger finished things off down the stretch for Chris Bono’s new squad. In another geographical indicator that college athletic conferences are still bonkers, West Virginia topped Northern Colorado 22-14 in the Big 12 Conference and season opener for both teams. Tim Flynn’s new team fell behind early, but four straight wins saw the Mountaineers rally for the win, thanks to victories by Matthew Schmitt at 133, Joe Wheeling - which is fitting he wrestles for West Virginia - at 141, Christian Monserrat at 149 and Zach Moore at 157. Moore’s locked up the dual win. And out in California, Manny Rivera and his CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners did some wacky stuff, doing a tri-meet on two mats with three rounds each as San Francisco State and Life Pacific went round-robin in a way that is well, interesting. Life Pacific is a brand-new NAIA program in Southern California while San Francisco State is led by second-year head coach and California native Jason Welch. The Gators have a pretty solid coaching staff too there with Ryan Loder, Dom Kastl and Orry Elor. Runners won big, by the way, topping San Francisco State 38-3 and Life Pacific 38-6. San Francisco State beat Life Pacific 39-6. Let’s go back to the whole “new era thing,” shall we? And we’re not talking Boston Red Sox World Series hats here either, Doug Schwab. The Brett Hamm era opened up in a big way as Cornell College trounced Simpson College 51-0 in a battle of two Iowa Division III programs. As you may know, Mike Duroe, the former Cornell College head coach, lost his battle with brain cancer earlier this year. Sixth-ranked Upper Iowa picked up five forfeits and beat undermanned Truman State 56-0. We’re going to give Truman State a bit of a pass here since coach David Schutter and the program raised enough money to keep the program afloat this year after the school announced it was going to drop the sport. Bulldog faithful raised over $81,000 to keep the program rolling. Division III Millikin opened up its season outside with a 45-6 win over NAIA Hannibal-LaGrange. The Big Blue, yes, the BIG BLUE earned seven bonus victories and a forfeit to cruise in their season opener. Keeping it D3, Delaware Valley got up 26-0 after five matches, but actually had to hang on 29-20 over Penn College. Kyle Hillermeier’s win at 184 pounds finally iced it for the Aggies. Division III Alma beat Davenport in a battle of two of Bloodround’s favorite schools in Michigan. Alma’s Jacob Ransom topped Davenport’s Weston DeHaven 7-0 at 285 pounds to give the Scots the 21-16 victory over the Panthers, who are completing their transition from the NAIA to NCAA Division II. In a dual that featured just three actual individual matches, Arkansas Baptist of the NJCAA topped NAIA Central Baptist 18-15. This isn’t one you really want to promote. Let’s just hope both programs can do a better job of drawing more student-athletes to their respective schools so we don’t have duals with seven forfeits. With some better news in Arkansas, at least for one team, the University of the Ozarks topped Lyon 24-16 in a matchup of two schools from down there. By the way, if you like some dark, twisted stuff - Ozark on Netflix has you covered. I’m almost done with Season 2. Wacky stuff. As far as the dual, well, Ny’Trell Dean had a big fall at 149 to power the Eagles past the Scots. HEY, that’s TWO Scots references tonight - three if you count Tim Flynn, but you can’t count that, since he’s not a Scot anymore. Elsewhere in the NAIA, the Running Eagles of Life beat Truett McConnell 34-10. Omi Acosta has like 90-something wrestlers on his team at Life. Montana State-Northern beat North Idaho 35-3 and in keeping things out west, Clackamas beat Western Wyoming in junior college action 20-18 to extend the Cougars dual meet win streak to 35 in a row. On the women’s side of things, King avenged an early-season loss to Life with a 31-11 win in Marietta. Wins by Ana Luciano at 143 and Rachel Hale at 155 solidified the dual for the Tornado. The School of Movies Archive

[School of Movies 2017] A little-seen animated film from 2014, produced by Guillermo del Toro, directed by Jorge Gutierrez, the man behind the award-winning show El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera. This is a celebration of mexican culture, centred around the Day of the Dead, and the Lands of the Remembered and the Forgotten, as much about life as it is about death, and dealing with ancient gods making wagers with one another over the actions of humans.  Masquerading as a cute, colourful, hyperactive, kid's movie, this in fact has more in common with the work of LAIKA, and slowly, over time, introduces more and more texture and personal touches from its creators who strove to make the art match their beautiful concept work.  A commission by Abel Savard, who encouraged us with his supporting of this episode to dig deeper and find something really rather wonderful.

This week's episode of Sudden History will take us cross country to the West Coast, as we cover the Pac 12. This is a conference that is changing rapidly. Three of the six schools will feature new head coaches. Sudden History was able to speak to two of these new head coaches and a assistant from the third school.  The podcast will start with Cal Poly's new head coach Jon Sioredas. Jon explains what brought him to San Luis Obispo and how his number one priority has been building relationships with the Mustang wrestlers and his coaching staff. Next up is CSU Bakersfield Associate head coach Jeff Silveira. Coach Silveira was at Bakersfield for two season prior to Manny Rivera getting the head coaching position and has retained his role. He enlightens Sudden History on a newfound commitment to the wrestling program from the school. We have another Associate head coach on board, this time Oregon State's Kevin Roberts. He is candid about the Beavers team and how they have struggled to maintain a top ten NCAA finish after doing so twice in 2012 and 2013. Coach Roberts also details the changes made in the OSU coaching staff in the off-season. A semi-new face is Boise State's new head coach Mike Mendoza. Coach Mendoza is not new to the conference, as he was previously the head man at CSU-Bakersfield. He talks about trying to bring Boise State back to their glory years when current assistants Levi Jones and Andrew Hochstrasser were competing. Finally, we finish with Stanford head coach Jason Borrelli. The Cardinal continue to recruit well and have a team with depth throughout the lineup and will finally try to unseat Oregon State atop the conference. Episode 270 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast visits with the new head wrestling coach at CSU Bakersfield, Manny Rivera. After an All-American career at the University of Minnesota, Rivera spent time at the University of Virginia and North Dakota State before taking the reigns of the Roadrunner program in his native California. Rivera first broke on to the national scene as a senior in high school, winning the 2003 NHSCA Senior Nationals. He was only third in the state of California his senior year, but avenged a semifinal loss to Gabe Flores and beat eventual teammate Mack Reiter along the way. Rivera talks about adapting to college wrestling, evolving as a coach and why he's ready to lead the Roadrunner program. He also gives his thoughts on what he's learned from friend and former teammate Roger Kish at North Dakota State, Steve Garland at U.Va., and of course, J Robinson. Rivera also throws a few comments about coach Robinson in the current situation as well. The Short Time Time Wrestling Podcast is proudly sponsored by Flipswrestling.
