Heads Up - A USA Wrestling Coaches Council Podcast: S2 Episode 7 featuring Marlin Grahn and PSU AthletesMarlin Grahn spent most of his adult life within the Portland State wrestling program. Grahn, who was the head coach from 1985-2006, is best remembered for his dominant teams at the NCAA Division II level, which included a pair of National Championships in 1989 and 1990. His teams won four regional championships (1988, 1989, 1990, 1992) while his individual athletes earned 40 All-America honors, 17 national championships and two Olympic appearances. Grahn was an assistant under Don Conway and Len Kauffman from 1973-1984 before taking over the program. However, it should not be overlooked that Grahn was an extremely talented wrestler in his own right, competing at Portland State from 1969-73. Grahn competed on teams that compiled a 43-22-3 dual meet record and placed in the NCAA Division I Championships four times, along with NCAA West Regional titles in 1972 and 1973. He was 53-15 with 26 pins in his career and his unorthodox, aggressive style earned him the nickname “Marlin the Magician.” (Portland State University Athletics Hall of Fame)

PA Announcers Jason Bryant and Bryan Hazard honor the seniors for the Class of 2020 who didn't get a chance to compete at the NCAA Division I Championships.
With head coach Pat Popolizio still trying to get his charcoal grill lit, host Brian Reinhardt didn’t have time to wait for Episode 67, so he reached out to Connecticut native and 2020 ACC Champion Jakob Camacho to hold down the fort. Camacho was the No. 10 seed at the 2020 NCAA Division I Championships but didn’t get to compete as COVID-19 cause the NCAA to cancel all winter and spring seasons in early March. Bobby Steveson came into the University of Minnesota from nearby Apple Valley High School as the top-ranked 195-pounder in the country. A champion at the USA Wrestling Junior Nationals, Steveson looked to be one of the anchors for the upper weights for the Gophers. But injuries took their toll and even though Steveson made one trip to the NCAA Division I Championships, his high school accolades and expectations didn't match up. Now with his college career over, Steveson talks about what's next, what it's been like to corner his younger brother Gable at the World level and the disappointment he and his Gopher teammates felt when the 2020 NCAA Championships, set for U.S. Bank Stadium, were canceled. Steveson talks about connecting with this musical side, his outdoorsy hobbies and how much he changed as a person after enrolling in college. Not all high school wrestling super studs have glittering careers, but Steveson's looking back at his while moving forward with life.
It’s Friday the 13th. It was perhaps the only cool thing about growing up with the name Jason. The whole mythological thing with the Argonauts hadn’t quite resonated just yet - and since I didn’t go to school at the University of Providence or play in Toronto in the CFL, those references were lost on me - just like those two COULD be lost on you. This is Short Time Shots, a mostly daily look at the scores and more from in and around the world of wrestling, I’m Jason Bryant. Before we get to the college action, the Walsh Ironman, one of the best high school wrestling tournaments in the universe is rolling on in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. To keep with the theme, Wyoming Seminary coach Scott Green says Sem has 13 entered, 13 survived on the 13th. Somewhat witty. No truth to the rumor Coach Green was at Wing Warehouse with the seedy underbelly of the wrestling internet. Sometimes you get interrupted from recording a show by three people in said town of Cuyahoga Falls. Minnesota Beer of the Night: You probably won’t find it by the time you get here for the NCAA Division I Championships, but it’s Surly’s Black Horsemen, which is brewed in collaboration with those fun-loving metal heads at King Diamond. Yes, THAT King Diamond. It’s a Danish style black lager - a style I fell in love with when I was at the Junior World Championships in Trnava, Slovakia in 2018. This isn’t quite as awesome as what I had over there, but it’s delicious and perfect at five percent - remember, I’m on untappd at jasonbryant12. New Patron: Pat Fitzgerald. Yup. That one. Thanks Pat for your support over the years. Dual Meets: No. 6 NC State doubled up Appalachian State 24-12 with Nick Reenan making his return to the Wolfpack lineup at 197 pounds. Reenan beat Paul Carson 4-3, scoring a takedown in the third to pick up the W. Hayden Hidlay cruised to a 16-3 major decision over App State’s Matt Zovistoski at 157 pounds. D.J. Fehlman’s 9-3 win at 133 pounds in the dual’s final bout was enough to push Lock Haven past Navy 19-13 in the Rumble in the Jungle at Red Lion High School in Red Lion, Pennsylvania. Shout out to Red Lion head coach, Mike “The Nite Fox” Catullo. In Division II, the Battlers of Alderson Broaddus beat NAIA West Virginia Tech 33-16 in Beckley - that’s in West Virginia. Top-ranked St. Cloud State moved within one win of tying the Division II dual meet win streak record - one that they hold - after beating Northern State 29-9. The Huskies have won 53 in a row. Northern State’s James Burks did beat St. Cloud State’s James Pleski 7-5 at 157, so that’s a notable one there. Augsburg, ranked fourth in Division III, topped Division II Southwest Minnesota State on Friday in Minneapolis. The Auggies won six of 10 and top-ranked Ryan Epps earned a fall at 4:51 at 165 pounds. You know those kids books, if you give a mouse a cookie or if you give a moose a muffin? Well, if you mention Augsburg, you’re going to have to mention Wartburg. Top-ranked Wartburg - that’s in the dual rankings - beat Cornell College 43-2. Also, UW-Eau Claire beat UW-Stevens Point 25-17. There was a slew of duals at the Pigeon Forge Duals in Tennessee, most of which were NAIA teams. No. 5 Campbellsville and No. 2 Reinhardt both went 4-0, while No. 10 Life went 3-0. Keiser, a first-year program in Florida, picked up two wins, but according to NAIA rules, only one of them was official - the 39-18 win over Bluefield. There was the win over NJCAA Southwest Virginia, but matches against two-year schools don’t count for NAIA schools. Buried the lede there - Keiser got its first win in school history! Concordia (Neb.) beat Midland 54-(-1) - yes, that’s negative. No report from the dual in Reno between Montana State-Northern and Eastern Oregon. Out west, Highline beat Big Bend 31-18. Notables on the Docket: There’s the UNI Open, LIU is at Drexel, Lock Haven is hosting some D3 schools while Chattanooga heads to No. 11 Iowa State. In Division II, there’s the monster tournament at Indianapolis, the Midwest Classic, while West Liberty faces Pitt-Johnstown. There’s like 40 duals in Division III, while Indiana Tech and Nebraska Wesleyan are hosting multi-team events. FROM THE DWN: Will Anthony Cassar break away from the U.S. and represent another nation in future Olympic Games? Well, if that isn’t a clickbait headline, I don’t know what is. Best part about that statement is its not a headline, but a throwaway line in a story from LovingMalta.com about the Penn State heavyweight. Apparently he’s of Maltese lineage - the country, not the breed of dog. The Mid-American Conference released its conference rankings, some of which seem to be devoid of results that happened within the past week. Trackwrestling’s Seven Minutes series with host Kyle Klingman talks with THE Ohio State University head coach Tom Ryan. Kyle also drops the third episode of How Wrestling Built Me with entrepreneur Joe Johnson of VADE Nutrition. TheMat.com previews the athletes you’ll be seeing in Fort Worth next weekend at the U.S. Senior Nationals. That’s the name of it this year, since it’s not the Open, but it is the Open, but - anyway - of note, Tyler Graff going Greco. Lots of stuff out there on the Ironman, so here’s a quick link to InterMat’s semifinal matchups and team scores, because, well, it’s free. The NWCA has announced the Jim Koch Division II Hall of Fame for 2020. Super talented field with representation from North Dakota State, Chadron State, Augustana (S.D.) and Northern Colorado. Little Rock drops a feature about its wrestling twins, Jaylen and Jayden Carson. Big UFC card this weekend as a couple of wrestlers meet up - Kamarudeen “Marty” Usman and Colby Covington. Marty isn’t a dig, that’s just how I knew him. Resident fighter derelict Jon “Bones” Jones doesn’t care much for Covington. Well, they both suck at life, so there’s that. Here’s what Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports said about it. Sure, they could beat the crap out of me, but yeah, take world capitals for $1,200 and see how they do there, Alex.
When November 24, 2019 finally came, it put a close on the building era of the Little Rock wrestling program. It’s been 616 days since the announcement during the 2018 NCAA Division I Championships of a new Division I program. For coach Neil Erisman, it’s been 522 days since he was introduced as the first head coach in program history. For wrestling fans in the state of Arkansas, it was a decade and a half in the making. The only time a major state school had sponsored wrestling, as you learned in Episode 1 of Rocked Up, came in the 1950s at Arkansas State. That was more of a pet project of a wrestling coach rather than a bonafide college athletics program. That also pre-dated the NCAA’s divisional structure. So history was going to be made when the first whistle blew at 2 p.m. on Sunday, November 24, 2019 at the Jack Stephens Center on the campus of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. These are the final hours leading to the culmination of the building process and the commencement of competition. One last practice. They weigh in, at home, for the first time, in 24 hours. Welcome to Rocked Up, the story of the foundation and formation of the first Division I college wrestling program in Arkansas, starting in November of 2019 at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. This is the finale to that story. We started the journey developing the foundation of wrestling in the state of Arkansas and now we’ve moved on to the formation of the team, because to tell the full story of this program, you have to start at the very beginning. Where one door closes, another opens, and in Little Rock, we close the book on how this all got started. Now, the coaches, administration and athletes at Little Rock will write their own stories. Thank you for listening. I’m Jason Bryant. Rocked Up is a presentation of the Mat Talk Podcast Network and can be found on the web at GetRockedUp.com or at MatTalkOnline.com. Ever go to a trampoline park? Yeah. You’ll feel it the next day. With a pretty good slate of college wrestling going on Saturday, I’m sure you’re going to feel it too. I’m Jason Bryant and this is Short Time Shots, a mostly daily look at the scores and more from the world of wrestling. Dual Meets: Most of the key action took place at the Northeast Duals, but before we get there, No. 15 Pittsburgh hosted Campbell in a dual where the Fighting Camels felt they had chance to pull the upset and potentially get ranked for the first time in school history. They’ll have to wait. The Panthers won eight of 10 bouts in a 28-6 win. There were notable individual matches, though as Pitt’s Micky Phillipi downed Noah Gonser 6-2 at 133, while freshman Cole Matthews pinned Josh Heil at 141 pounds. At 165, Pitt’s Jake Wentzel majored Quentin Perez, who was coming off a solid effort at the Southeast Open. Campbell did pick up one notable upset, as red hot Andrew Morgan beat Nino Bonaccorsi 11-8 at 184. Morgan fell behind early, but rallied with a second period reversal and set of four nearfall points to tie the match going into the third. He added an escape and another takedown to pull out the win. Demetrius Thomas of Pittsburgh topped Jere Heino 10-3 at 285. Wow, there was actually a lot more to that dual than the score indicates. Now, we get to the Northeast Duals and I’m going to start off with the highest ranked dual between any teams in the mix, and that was in Division II where No. 2 St. Cloud State spanked No. 1 Pitt-Johnstown 31-6. St. Cloud State’s Garrett Vos knocked off No. 1 Tyler Warner 11-6 at 133 pounds and fourth-ranked Devin Fitzpatrick beat No. 2 Devin Austin 3-1 in two of the Huskies’ biggest wins. UPJ did get one win of note, two-time Division II national champ Chris Eddins edged three-time All-American James Pleski 3-2 at 149 pounds. That’s likely a preview of your national finals at the weight. The only matchup with ranked teams in Division I saw No. 8 Arizona State beat No. 23 Virginia 27-12. The Sun Devils also rallied to beat Purdue 22-19 as car-rental eligible Tanner Hall earned a tech fall at heavyweight to give ASU the dual win. Virginia opened the day with a 49-0 win over LIU. No Jack Mueller today for the Cavaliers. Purdue beat Buffalo 32-8 and Utah Valley 30-12. Utah Valley beat Sacred Heart 40-3, while Sacred Heart beat LIU 26-12. Buffalo also beat LIU 37-3. This is going to be a long year for the newly minted Division I team at LIU. Elsewhere around the Journeyman mats, No. 12 TCNJ beat No. 14 Ithaca 23-9, St. Cloud State shut out Division III Johnson & Wales 43-0, UPJ beat American International 51-4, Johnson & Wales beat TCNJ 25-10, Ithaca beat fellow D3 Castleton 35-6, while TCNJ beat Castleton 30-12. St. Cloud State had a second shutout, beating American International 54-0. UPJ opened with a win over Ithaca 25-12, Johnson & Wales also beat American International 45-3 and Castleton did get one win, beating Alfred State 49-0. At North Penn High School in Pennsylvania, Drexel opened up its season 2-0 beating Division II West Liberty 32-9 and SIUE 18-15. Ebed Jarrell’s sudden victory win over Chase Deihl at 165 was a crucial win for the Dragons as was Bryan McLaughin’ major decision at 197 over Aric Bohn. SIUE edged West Liberty 17-15. Out west, Cal Baptist, in its second year transitioning to Division I, shut out NAIA Life Pacific 51-0. In the land of cheese and Spotted Cow, UW-Parkside topped UW-Whitewater 32-19 to maintain possession of the Sake Bottle, a weird traveling trophy between the D2 and D3 schools. When I think Whitewater, or Kenosha, which is where Parkside is located, I think Japanese rice wine. In Division III, it’s weird to say No. 3 Wartburg, but No. 3 Wartburg won its 214th conference dual in a row, beating Nebraska Wesleyan 39-6. With seven bonus victories, the Knights dominated, but at 133, Nebraska Wesleyan All-American Eron Haynes got down early, then got up, then held on for a wild 23-17 win. In New England, it was New England College beating Plymouth State 35-13. The Pilgrims also beat New Hampshire’s club team 51-0. Southern Maine beat Bridgewater State 30-10, while Johnson & Wales, with a split squad, beat Bridgewater State 34-8 and Southern Maine 21-11. In the NAIA, Southeastern’s 52-0 win over Keiser wasn’t the most impressive thing about the dual. It was the first dual for Southeastern under new coach Brandon Jorge, it was the first dual in school history for the new program at Keiser, and it was the first varsity college dual in the state of Florida since 1986. Returning All-Americans Dylan Chatterton, Olson Delisca and Ethan Owen all had bonus victories on the day. On the women’s side, No. 4 Wayland Baptist picked off Colorado Mesa 29-18. All-Americans Nina Pham at 101 pounds, and Desiree Zavala at 136 pounds, picked up big victories in the dual. Tournaments: At the Bison Open in Fargo, Minnesota had five champs, while North Dakota State had four. Joe Russell once told me, the season starts when you have a hot dog at the Bison. I’d counter with a beer at The Turf - which is Turf reference No. 3 this week! At 141 pounds, Minnesota’s Mitch McKee picked up a 16-second fall in the finals. At 149, Brayton Lee of Minnesota beat teammate Jakob Bergeland 7-5, it’s notable since Bergeland beat South Dakota State’s Henry Pohlmeyer in the semifinals. Roger Williams won the Ned McGinley Invitational with 150 points and had two champs and three runners-up, while second place York (Pa.) finished with 115.5 points and two champs. Springfield was third with two champs and 104 points. Notable matches from the Mountaineer Invitational and Open, which had two brackets with those particular names - interesting. Oregon State’s Devan Turner topped App State’s Codi Russel at 133 pounds, Logan Parks of Central Michigan beat App State’s Matt Zovistoski 3-2 at 157, while Matt Stencel of CMU beat Cary Miller of App State 3-1 in sudden victory at heavyweight. Gannon won the Mount Union Invitational with 154 pounds, followed by Seton Hill at 113.5. Lake Erie was third with 100. At Oklahoma City University’s open, the story there is the first competition for the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. They’ll host their first dual on November 24, but Saturday was their first official competition as a squad. At 133, Paul Bianchi, a transfer and past NCAA qualifier from North Dakota State, finished second, falling to Oklahoma State’s Reece Witcraft. The Trojans had three more placers - Jayden Carson at 125, Joe Bianchi at 141 and Jose Champagne at 157. As far as the tournament went, Oklahoma State won nine of the 10 weights. The other was a double by Oklahoma at heavyweight. On the women’s side, the Waldorf Open finished up in Forest City, Iowa. What’s also notable here is for the first time, two Iowa schools had women’s wrestling programs competing in the same event - Grand View and host Waldorf - while Augsburg, a Division III powerhouse on the men’s side, competed in its first event as a varsity women’s program. As far as the tournament goes, Jamestown crushed it, with five champions. Grand View had two, Augsburg had co-champs at 123. Waldorf also had a champ. Notables on the Docket for November 10: Northwestern is at Virginia Tech for the Mound on the Mat outdoor dual, Navy’s at Penn State, Illinois and Army West Point are at Chattanooga, Campbell’s at Ohio, Stanford opens up Ohio State’s new facility and there’s a crap ton of tournaments around the country, too many to list here, but there is the Journeymen Collegiate Classic in Troy, N.Y. FROM THE DWN: A school district in Pennsylvania is reversing its course after being challenged on a policy that prevented girls from competing in combat sports, like wrestling, against boys. Seventh-grader Katalyna Borreli loves wrestling and wanted to compete for her junior high team until she was told it was against the district’s policy. Read about how that policy got reversed via WFMZ. This has also been a prolific topic among Facebook groups. Dan Lobdell, aka The Wrestling Nomad, looks at Jaydin Eierman’s impact on the Iowa lineup and the team race for the NCAA Division I Championships - in 2021. Trackwrestling’s Andy Hamilton gets a tour of the UW-La Crosse wrestling facility as coach Dave Malecek enters his 14th season at one of the top wrestling programs in the country. It’s Tuesday, so that means all the rankings in the world are now available in Division I wrestling. Flowrestling, Trackwrestling, AWN, WIN, The Open Mat, InterMat, the society for the reintroduction of feral cats and Nipsey Russell’s House of Hustle have all released their college rankings. They come out Monday or Tuesday, you know where to go for them, so I won’t bog down the show with notes about them here. I will say, I do despise tournament rankings being used for dual meet promotion. You wrestle duals, use dual meet rankings. Several of them are also out there – pick one. Starting off the show with a rant rather than a rub, this is Short Time Shots, a mostly daily look at the scores and more from around the world of wrestling. I’m Jason Bryant. Limited night in duals, so we’ll just throw out what we’ve got before it gets too late and my kids wake back up. My wife’s still in China, which means I’m still in survival mode. I love my kids, but you really do lose all sense of personal time when you’re watching them solo. Tonight, it was the Little Mermaid Live. Under the Sea, take it from me … there’s some messed up lyrics in Disney films. Minnesota Beer of the Night: And you know the NCAA Division I Championships are coming to Minneapolis this year. So with that in mind, when relevant, I’ll give you my Minnesota beer of the night. Tonight, it’s Pixel Bot, a New England IPA that’s 7.6% ABV, but a smooth 11 IBUs. If you don’t know what that means, it means its not bitter and has a bit of a kick. It’s by Tin Whiskers Brewing Company in St. Paul. Dual Meets: It was a men’s-women’s Division III doubleheader in Naperville, Illinois on Tuesday night as North Central College picked up a pair of wins over MacMurray College. On the women’s side, the Cardinals won the first dual meet in school history with a 27-21 win. Of the seven matches contested, North Central won six. On the men’s side, North Central used four forfeits to win comfortably 47-6. In Little Rock, Division II Ouachita Baptist won a pair of duals, first topping host Arkansas Baptist, an NJCAA school, 40-6, then beating NAIA Central Baptist 36-17. Arkansas Baptist upended Central Baptist 24-14. That’s the extent of Tuesday’s scores. PROMO CODE WARNING: I posted on Twitter today about the number of wrestling podcasts currently out in the wild. There’s about 63 active shows with 20 of them on this here Mat Talk Podcast Network. I want people making good decisions when it comes to choosing a podcast hosting company. There’s stuff that’s free, and there’s stuff that’s good. I want you to go with what’s good. Sign up for Libsyn, at L-I-B-S-Y-N at Libsyn.com and use the promo code MTO to get a month for free. That means you get the rest of THIS month and NEXT month free. They’ve got plans as affordable as $5 a month. They’ve been the backbone of this network and if you don’t reach out to me for technical advice, at least hear me on this one – Libsyn.com, use promo code MTO and get your free month (and a half!) From the DWN: The first NWCA Division I Coaches Poll of the regular season was released on Tuesday, with the only real movement happening as a result of Virginia Tech’s 29-10 win over Missouri. The Hokies jumped up five spots to No. 11, while Missouri slid four spots from No. 9 to No. 13. The NJCAA rankings came out and Western Wyoming comes in as the No. 1 team to start the year. The Mustangs are followed by NIACC, Clackamas, Harper and Ellsworth. Expect traditional powers Northeastern Oklahoma A&M and Iowa Central to creep up there as the season moves on. Johnson & Wales swept the New England Wrestling Association awards this week as Gabriel McDaniel was named Wrestler of the Week, while Hayden Brown was Rookie of the Week. Both won titles at the Ithaca Invitational – McDaniel at 141, Brown at 133. McDaniel was also named com Wrestler of the Week as well. The Air Force Academy’s Randy Meneweather was named Co-Big 12 Wrestler of the Week after winning the Cowboy Open going 5-0 with four falls at 165 pounds in the Elite Division. He shares the award with Fresno State’s Jacob Wright, who went 3-0 in duals in San Diego, which is Spanish … nevermind. Virginia Tech’s B.C. “I’m seriously named after a headache powder” LaPrade was named ACC Wrestler of the Week. He wrestled at New Kent in Virginia, which is in my home district, the Bay Rivers. One time, I was walking into a dual at Tabb High School a few days before the Virginia Duals. B.C.’s dad comes up to me and goes “Didn’t I meet you in Fargo?” I said you have to be more specific. He said “It was at the Turf.” I say again, sir, you have to be more specific. Turf reference #2 this year. Ohio State’s Luke Pletcher and Purdue’s Kendall Coleman were Big Ten Co-Wrestlers of the Week. Both won the Michigan State Open. Pletcher’s title included a win over No. 1 Dom Demas of Oklahoma, while Coleman slayed three ranked foes en route to the title. The Predicament released Inside The Rivalry, Chapter 7, Part 3, which is never confused with Leonard Part 6 – although I don’t think we can reference films like that anymore. Anyway, this feature focuses on Mario Galanakis. It’s been a pretty good series to read. com has broken down the individual schedule for two-time NCAA champion Spencer Lee. I mean, this might be the first time I’ve seen something like this posted, ever. Keeping with that Iowa theme, Cody Goodwin of the Des Moines Register checks in with his Week 1 Redshirt Report. Cody won last year’s NWMA Journalist of the Year Award. I still have to send him his mug. North Carolina made a coaching move, adding Jordan Oliver to the staff as a volunteer assistant and also elevating Tony Ramos to Associate Head Coach. Oliver’s move to Carolina was confirmed a bit ago, but him joining the staff officially is news to some. Transition Wrestling, an outfit aimed at promoting women’s college wrestling, released its weekend recap. I’ll be leaning more on what Gabby Lord-Klein is doing with Transition Wrestling to keep up with the women’s scores since I won’t be tracking down things for my now-retired college wrestling scoreboard. Of note there, Texas Wesleyan earned its first ever women’s college dual win, defeating Schreiner 24-14. I’ll do a better job at getting the women’s scores, in the Shots score section as the season moves on. The Times of India, which if you don’t know, produces some pretty wild stories about what’s going on in Indian wrestling, features the 2020 medal hopes, Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia. The story goes into the backstory of the Phogats, which was highlighted in the movie Dangal. Five Point Move outlines the rise of Spencer Woods of the Army’s World Class Athlete Program as he won his first senior-level gold medal in Greco-Roman in Sweden over the weekend. Yahoo reports Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will portray Mark Kerr in an upcoming film. Kerr, known widely as a pioneer in MMA, was a four-time NCAA qualifier at Syracuse and a 1992 NCAA champion. HBO did a documentary on Kerr in 2002 called The Smashing Machine. Kerr was 10th at the 1994 World Championships at 100kg in Istanbul in men’s freestyle. Flo also touched on Willie Saylor leaving the company. It’s on the FRL podcast feed, which is free, however the link to the show is part of the Flo Pro, and as I said in a previous show, the show and newsletter doesn’t link to content behind paywalls. I’m an equal opportunity denier as well. On The Network Episode 55 of the #PackMentality Pop-Ins Podcast, the only school-hosted team show on the Mat Talk Podcast Network gets an NC State recap as well as some insight from Kellen Devlin, who won The Battle at The Citadel over the weekend. You can get to read those stories and more from Mat Talk Online’s daily wrestling newsletter. On the Docket for November 6: West Virginia Tech from the NAIA will take on Division II West Liberty as the Danny Irwin era begins at West Liberty. Tangent Warning: Hopefully the kids who got left stranded by whatever the hell Wheeling University, formerly Wheeling Jesuit, all found homes to compete this year. Irwin led Wheeling Jesuit to a second place finish at last year’s Division II championship before the wheels on the bus came falling off and the school slashed tons of academic and athletic programs – but never officially announced it. Their wrestling room was left in literal shambles. Sean Doyle and Danny Irwin and staff had a good thing going there. There’s something to be said about poor leadership at a school, with a CC: to our friends down at St. Olaf. Fontbonne, a new Division III program in Missouri, will wrestle its first dual in school history as it heads north to Lincoln, Neb., to take on Nebraska Wesleyan. Division II Davenport heads across Michigan to take on Division III Alma. Graceland takes on Central Methodist in the NAIA school’s first dual in school history, while down in North Carolina, the Nick Soto era begins at St. Andrews as the NAIA Knights head to Belmont Abbey to take on the Division II Crusaders. California: Three duals out west as Chabot hosts Fresno City, Cerritos hosts Palomar and Santa Ana will host Rio Hondo, which is one of two Roadrunners that I know of in college wrestling. The other is at CSU Bakersfield. Meep Meep! I’d love to do more with the NJCAA but the schedule compilation is just too brutal. The Mat Talk Online Daily Newsletter is sponsored by Resilite. It's a special look back at 20 years of the Super 32 on the Short Time Wrestling Podcast! Back in 2000, I was still in college at Old Dominion. I was working on tracking down results from any and all high school tournaments and after attending my first USA Wrestling Cadet & Junior Nationals the summer prior, I started covering more off-season stuff for the first iteration of Mat Talk Online. This involved fall folkstyle events from USAW and the AAU, spring freestyle and paying attention to out-of-state tournaments where Virginia teams participated. One of those tournaments popped up in 2000, my fourth year in college at ODU and my fourth running Mat Talk Online. It was the Super 32. I first noticed it that fall when a local wrestler in the coverage area of the newspaper I was working at won at 119 pounds. George Dodson was an Eagle Scout from Denbigh High Sc hool who never reached the Group AAA state tournament. Then I saw Drake Dickenson’s name. Drake wrestled at Magna Vista in the Southwest portion of Virginia before crossing the state line to wrestle for Dave Barker at Eden-Morehead. And that’s how it all began for me. This list is a look back at things that make me go “oh wow,” and is not designed to be an inclusive list. During the 2005-08 years, I ran InterMat for the NWCA, which then owned the site. So my knowledge of high school wrestling from that era was in top form. Prior to 2005, I worked and lived in Virginia, so that’s where the lion’s share of my knowledge existed. In 2000, the very first champion was at 101.1 pounds and it was host Morehead’s Chris Moore defeating future Virginia four-time state champion Matt Epperly of Christiansburg, Virginia. Epperly went on to wrestle at Virginia Tech and qualified for the NCAA Division I Championships twice. Current UNC Pembroke coach Othello “O.T.” Johnson claimed a title at 163 pounds, beating Chris Ward of James Madison High School in Virginia. One time in Fargo, Ward got out after curfew. Team Virginia coach Ben Summerlin ran him outside until he puked. In 2001, David Barker cites this as a turning point in the tournament’s second year. Virginia powerhouse Great Bridge shows up and crowns four champions. Daren Burns, who wrestled at UNC Greensboro, was third at 190 pounds. He got better. In 2002, the word is out. The Super 32 is now challenging the Lock Haven Fall Classic as the top preseason event on the east coast and the event is starting to gain traction nationally. A middle school division is added as well. Ashtin Primus from Connellsville, Pennsylvania comes down and cradles his way to a title. Future Division III All-American Donny Ooton of Great Bridge wins at 140, while future Old Dominion All-American Chris Brown wins at 145. In 2003, we’ve got nationally ranked wrestlers hitting one another before the finals. Eric Hoffman, a future NJCAA national champion from Iowa Central and D1 national qualifier comes out from Iowa where he falls in the finals to Dusty McKinney at 125. A pair of future two-time D1 All-Americans meet in the finals at 103 where Tyler Nauman of Middletown, Pennsylvania beats eighth-grader Scotti Sentes of Riverside, Florida, 6-2. Primus wins another title, this time at 135. Future Missouri All-American Raymond Jordan of New Bern, North Carolina beats future Limestone Division II national champion Dan Scanlan of Loudoun County, Virginia 4-1 in the finals at 171. Scores of future Division I wrestlers who don’t place. Moving to 2004, Ashtin Primus wins his third straight Super 32. Hammer champions include – well, they were pretty much all hammers. At 112, Ian Moser of Delaware beat Walker Faison of Virginia in a bout with two of the best lightweights in the country. New Jersey brought a strong group from Bound Brook as Nick Murray and Andrew Flanagan won titles. Top-ranked wrestlers Patrick Bond of Great Bridge, Cody Gardner of Christiansburg and Kenny Lester of Oviedo, Florida swept the top three weights. In 2005, Brandon, Florida’s talented crop of hammers comes in, led by Eric Grajales at 103 pounds. Grajales bests Steve Mitcheff of Ohio 7-0 in the finals. Among the names at 103 were Matt Snyder and Nic Bedelyon of Pennsylvania – shout out to the late Wayne Danger – Eric Dunnett of New Jersey, Zeke Hofer from Colorado, Joey Lazor of Georgia and Andrew Williams of Virginia. No, I’m not going to load up all these brackets, because this is where the podcast will get significantly larger. UWW media guy Eric Olanowski was also in this bracket. At 112, North Carolina’s Brandon Davis emerged as the champion, but wasn’t heard from much in college. Current Huntingdon College head wrestling coach Matt Oliver, beat Marshall Peppelman in the semifinals and felt to Davis in the final. Anyone remember Ryan Fields from Ohio? Yup. He was the champ at 119, beating future D1 All-American Walter Peppelman in the finals. Future All-American Jarrod Garnett of Virginia Tech doesn’t place. 13-seed Abbie Rush, a future Boston U. wrestler, stormed into the finals, beating future All-American Peter Yates and past champ Ian Moser. He falls to Mike Robinson of Lewistown, Pa., who later on in the year will hand Mike Grey of Delbarton, New Jersey, his first high school loss at the Beast of the East. Robinson was given a #42 seed at the Super 32 and won it. He was unseeded when he fell in the finals to Kellen Russell at the Beast. Tyler Nauman beat Peter Yates in the blood round. Bishop Lynch from Texas came out and brought some studs as Luke Silver and Luke Ashmore won titles. Christiansburg’s Andrew Clement won 10 matches – although two were forfeits – to claim third at 140. Nick Nelson, a future All-American at Virginia, stopped Ashtin Primus in his bid for a fourth title with a fall in the finals at 145. Nelson had earlier edged Bubba Jenkins and then beat Matt Cathell of Delaware and Bryan Tracy of Paulsboro, New Jersey in the semis. Jon Reader of Davison, Michigan had four pins and a major to reach the finals against Matt Epperly. Reader won 4-1. Future NCAA champion Dustin Kilgore was third, losing by fall in the quarters to eventual champion Tommy Spellman of New Jersey. Spellman beat Reynolds’ Lawrence Beckman in the finals. Yes, of those Reynolds Beckmans. You know what, if I do this for every year, it’ll be longer than the three-hour finals show I put on from the Asian Championships. So let’s look at JUST THE FINALS for 2006 and the numbers. Nine Division I All-Americans, of them, there was two-time champion David Taylor from Graham, Ohio. You also have Division II champion Tommy Abbott of Delaware, two-time NJCAA champion and NAIA All-American Jamelle Jones, also of Delaware. The head-to-heads of note saw Pennsylvania’s Troy Dolan beat Jarrod Garnett of Delaware. Man, Delaware had a good crop of guys in that era. Collin Dozier of Virginia over Tyler Nauman of Pennsylvania, Dustin Kilgore of Ohio beat Jordan Blanton of Illinois in a battle of future three-time All-Americans. Jones beat future NCAA finalist Chris Honeycutt of St. Edward at 189. New York’s Kyle Dake, wrestling at 112, lost to Virginia’s Michael Garafalo and Georgia’s Joey Lazor and finished 7/8. Olanowski won this bracket by the way. At 119, returning champion Brandon Davis of North Carolina fell to the 7/8, which wasn’t yet wrestled. Among champion Frank Perrelli’s victims – a guy named Creed, a Levi Strauss, Scotti Sentes and Josh Kindig. That was just to reach the finals. Ok, the first two were more for name effect. His opponent, Gabriel Espinosa of Florida beat Travis Coffey of North Carolina, Nic Bedelyon and Eric Grajales to reach the finals. Nick Nelson repeated, winning at 145 pounds with a 5-3 win over Tommy Abbott. Future Division III champion Vincent Renaut was ousted in the blood round by future Buffalo Bull John-Martin Cannon at 152. Scott Winson beat Ben Bennett in the semis at 160, Jordan Blanton beat Cam Simaz in the semis before falling to Kilgore in the finals. Moving to 2007, which was the second-to-last year I attended because when you move away from the East Coast, getting to North Cacka-lacky ain’t so easy. First, the finals stats: seven Division I All-Americans, one three-time D1 champion, and a Greco-Roman World teamer – Max Nowry. At 125, Eric Grajales beat Pennsylvania’s Jordan Oliver 1-0, Collin Palmer of Ohio beat Kenny Courts of Pennsylvania 4-2 at 135. Future All-Americans to fall were Walter Peppelman, who lost to Tony Jameson of Ohio and Ed Ruth, who lost to Michigan’s Jacob Burge 5-4 at 171. Anthony Clinton of North Carolina won by injury default over Virginia’s Max Huntley, who hadn’t yet transferred to Blair Academy. Now, the fun stuff. A.J. Schopp beat Devin Carter for third at 103, Jeremy Sandoval of Texas beat Tony Ramos for fifth at 125, Jarrod Garnett beat Josh Kindig for third at 130, Marshall Peppelman beat R.J. Pena of Oregon for third at 140, future All-American from The Citadel, Odie Delaney was fifth at 215. Other “what the heck” stats include: Max Nowry beating A.J. Schopp in the semis, Grajales beating Ramos 8-0 in the semis, future Cornell backup Joe Stanzione beating Joey Lazor. There’s some weird tie-in there with Dake if you can do the math. Collin Palmer over Taylor Massa in the semis. Sightings of C.J. Napier of Kansas and Carson Fields of Georgia at 135. Another Kansan, Aldon Isenberg finishing second to Trevor Melde of New Jersey at 140. The aforementioned free-wheeling Tony Jameson of Ohio. Future four-time NAIA champion Brock Gutches beating future Division III All-American Emmanuel Ajagbe of New Jersey in the consolation semis at 145. Joe Booth making his national breakout performance at 152. My friend Nate Schy still can’t stand him from his fantasy wrestling draft picks. He even told him such on Facebook. Eric Cubberly of Ohio beat Scotty Winston of New Jersey in the finals at 160. Ed Ruth beat Jordan Blanton in the semifinals and this is before Ruth ever went to Blair. Jacob Burge’s semifinal op

Welcome to Season 8, Episode 26 of the ParentingAces Podcast! I have been traveling - A LOT! - and have not been able to schedule podcast recording sessions the past few weeks. So, in this week's show, we throw it back to my conversation with former World #1 and current Tennis Parent, Tracy Austin. Please note: this episode hails from my days broadcasting on BlogTalkRadio, so you will hear a different intro than you're used to! Tracy Austin shares her incredible tennis story and how she has used the lessons learned from her parents and siblings with her own children in this episode of the ParentingAces podcast, originally recorded and released in February 2015. As you may know, Tracy's son, Brandon Holt, just finished his 4-year stint as a USC Trojan where he played at the top of the lineup starting his Freshman year. I last had the chance to see him play at the 2019 NCAA Division I Championships in May, and his game has continued to grow and develop during his time under the tutelage of coach Peter Smith. Thank you to my son, Morgan Stone, aka STØNE, for our intro and outro music this season! You can find more of his music at SoundCloud.com/stonemuzic. Welcome to Season 8, Episode 23 of the ParentingAces Podcast! In this episode, I discuss the NCAAs with coach - and former University of Miami standout - Todd Widom. If you follow ParentingAces on any social media, you are well aware the NCAA Division I Championships just concluded down in Orlando at the USTA National Campus. I was fortunate enough to be there for the team finals as well as the first day of the individual singles competition. While Todd Widom wasn't able to be there in person, he did watch countless matches online and on Tennis Channel. He and I both have several observations to report and discuss. Tennis parents and junior coaches may learn some things to help their own players reach this highest level of College Tennis! The long and storied history of Perry High School wrestling in Perry, Oklahoma is being chronicled in an upcoming documentary. That storied history added another milestone last month when Perry won the school's 1,000th dual meet. On Episode 495 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast, I talk with head coach Ronnie Delk, an Oklahoma State alum, in his eighth year coaching the program. The school and town center around wrestling, with a noted monument dedicated to all its state champions as well as historical heroes like Jack VanBebber and Danny Hodge. What's it like being an "outsider" coaching in Perry? How relevant is Danny Hodge today? What about guys like Jake Hager? How did Delk's battles with Daniel Frishkorn for the starting spot at 141 pounds at Oklahoma State impact his career and impact how he coaches kids? Information on the documentary, The Price of Legacy, can be found at ThePriceOfLegacy.com Photo courtesy Ronnie Delk Get the Guide! Menlo College is a small, business-minded school in California's Silicon Valley. Joey Bareng is a native Hawaiian who found himself ready to coach. Six years ago, Bareng took over at Menlo and the slow process of building the women's program from the bottom to the top began. That process came to a head on February 9 as Menlo won the school's first national title in any sport as the Oaks won the WCWA championship and crowned three individual winners. On Episode 494 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast, Bareng will talk about his beginnings in Hawaii, wrestling at San Francisco State and jumping right into coaching. Bareng coached Alleida Martinez, Gracie Figueroa and Solin Piearcy to national titles this season, the first national champs in Menlo's history that weren't named Fulp-Allen. What's the future look like for the school of barely 750 students? What about the growth of women's wrestling and the recruiting grounds in California that he's finally been able to pluck talent? The latest episode of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Legends Podcast is with 2017 Distinguished Member and NCAA champion Chuck Yagla. Raised in the wrestling hotbed of Waterloo, Iowa, Chuck Yagla turned a talent for wrestling into a lifelong passion. He began his wrestling journey at Waterloo’s Columbus High School, where he served as a senior team captain and was runner-up in the 1972 Class 3A state tournament. At the University of Iowa, Yagla won an NCAA championship at 150 pounds in 1975 as a junior. His win came via a 4-4, 1-1 split referee’s decision over future three-time NCAA champion and World champion, Lee Kemp. He repeated the feat in 1976, when he was also named Outstanding Wrestler of the NCAA tournament. Wrestling in international competition from 1972 to 1980, Yagla won freestyle events around the world. He was a United States Wrestling Federation Junior National Champion in 1972 and Grand Champion (Ring Series) in 1975. In addition, he won a USWF National Greco-Roman title in 1978. He was a U.S. Olympic freestyle alternate in 1976 and earned a spot on the 1980 Olympic Team, but he was denied the opportunity to compete when the U.S. boycotted the Moscow Games. Yagla also was a runner-up in the 1979 Tbilisi Tournament in the Soviet Union, which is regarded as the toughest international event outside of the Olympics, and won gold and silver medals in the World Cup. Following his wrestling career, Yagla served as assistant wrestling coach at the University of Iowa from 1977 to 1982, before he turned his attention to officiating. He spent 24 years as an NCAA official, gaining the respect of coaches and competitors nationwide. From 1996 to 2007, he was a fixture at the NCAA Division I Championships and was selected to referee finals matches five times. He officiated at six NCAA Division II Championships. In 2009, he was honored by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame as a Meritorious Official. For excelling in every aspect of wrestling during his incredible career, Chuck Yagla is honored as a Distinguished Member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. Sandy Stevens has witnessed how wrestling has saved lives. For 34 years, Stevens was known for announcing the NCAA Division I Championships. She has been the voice at multiple world championships, numerous independent and high school tournaments along with a pair of Olympic games (1984 – Los Angeles; 1996 – Atlanta). She tells the story of how wrestling helped her husband fight cancer and overcome the odds from being raised in a disadvantaged neighborhood.
Current UFC Heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic was an Ohio state wrestling runner-up as a senior at Eastlake North High School in 2000. He still had something to prove. In 2003, Miocic qualified for the NCAA Division I Championships on what was a pretty good Cleveland State team. He missed out on placing. He still had something to prove. On Episode 284 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast released on International Podcast Day, Miocic will talk about his rise to the top of the UFC, his passion for wrestling and baseball and how he's been able to train and win in the UFC all while serving as a paramedic and firefighter at two different stations in the Cleveland area. Miocic explains how some nuances of baseball compliment MMA and how fighting and firefighting complement one another. Fun interview with a fascinating guy. COMPOUND DEAL! My guest today is ATP Pro Jesse Witten. Jesse has been ranked as high as #163 in the world and reached the 3rd round of the 2009 US Open, where he took a set off tennis superpower Novak Djokovic. Jesse has also played in the main draws of the French Open and Wimbledon. He reached the final of the NCAA Division I Championships as a freshman at the University of Kentucky and was its first 5-time ITA All-American (4 singles, 1 doubles). I first noticed Jesse back in the juniors when he played and won a Super National Clay Court tournament in Maryland in 1999. It was my first time watching the best juniors in the country play against each other, and I witnessed him dominate the entire field. I was fortunate enough to play in this event two years later, but Jesse's performance always stuck in my mind as the best I had ever seen by a junior tennis player. I was fortunate enough to speak to Jesse about his career, from reaching the top ranks of the juniors, to how he developed into an elite tennis professional. He also discussed his time playing tennis at The University of Kentucky, and the impact that it had on his tennis game. We also paid tribute to Bruno Agostinelli, a former University of Kentucky tennis player who tragically passed away recently. Bruno was a great teammate and tennis player, but an even better person. He reached #2 in the NCAA rankings, and famously clinched a 5-set victory in the deciding Davis Cup match for Canada in 2009. A Gofundme page has been set up for Bruno's family, and they would definitely appreciate it if you could donate to the fund. Thanks to Jesse for being a fantastic guest on The Tennis Files Podcast. And shout out to Elliott Datlow, a fellow Kentucky Wildcat Tennis alumni, for putting me in touch with Jesse. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Episode 225 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast visits with Tommy Rowlands, a four-time All-American at Ohio State University and a 2007 U.S. World Teamer in men's freestyle. Rowlands has been doing various things in and around wrestling since he got out of coaching, but his two most recent happenings involve the new wrestling apparel company, The Rudis, and his new podcast with 2008 Olympian and current OneFC champion Ben Askren. The podcast, the T-Row and Funky Show (Subscribe on iTunes) gives an athlete's take on the topics in wrestling and while it's only three episodes in, will also interview people on those topics as well. Rowlands is also a partner in The Rudis, the apparel line that's featured the Dave Schultz t-shirts that have become prevalent around the wrestling community. Rowlands will also look back at one of the more painful moments in his career, the injury default that sent him to sixth place at the 2003 NCAA Division I Championships and he'll discuss his rivalry with Steve Mocco. We also take some time at the beginning of the show to remember the late Allen Brown, one of the main sources of info at WrestlingReport.com. For him, he's looking forward to the homecoming. But before we get ahead of ourselves, Richardson also touches on his upcoming appearance at the 50th annual NWCA All-Star Classic on November 1 in Atlanta. Richardson becomes the fourth Monarch wrestler to earn an invitation to the event. Wayne Bright competed back in 1970, then James Nicholson wrestled in the event twice in 2008 and 2009. Jack Dechow wrestled in the event last year. Richardson will try to become the first Monarch to win a match in the event as he faces longtime rival B.J. Clagon of Rider. On Episode 14 of the ODU Wrestling Monarch Matcast, it's an NCAA championship recap with ODU head wrestling coach Steve Martin. For only the second time in school history, Old Dominion wrestlers earned multiple All-American honors in the same tournament and it was the first time since Peter Horst and Nick Garone placed in 1991 where two Monarchs were on the podium in the same year. To put that in perspective, 141-pound All-American Chris Mecate wasn't born yet. Mecate and 149-pound junior Alexander "Lenny" Richardson placed to help lead the Monarchs to a 22nd-place finish. Mecate reached the NCAA semifinals while Richardson earned a seventh-place finish. Tristan Warner was honored prior to the finals as the recipient of the NCAA's Elite 89 Award, which goes to the championship qualifier with the highest GPA. Warner is a double major in communications and criminal justice. The wrestling season has come to a close and on Episode 12 of Inside Virginia Tech Wrestling, host Jason Bryant and head wrestling coach Kevin Dresser break down the individual performances at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in St. Louis and look forward to the future. Coach Dresser also has a clinic and a fundraiser for Hokie Wrestling in Virginia Beach this weekend as the NHSCA National Championships take place at the Virginia Beach Convention Center, just blocks from the oceanfront. I'd like to include a personal note to all the fans of Virginia Tech wrestling who listen to this show regularly -- THANK YOU. As coach Dresser explains at the end of Episode 12, Virginia Tech was one of the first programs to jump on board with the Mat Talk Podcast Network. The relationship goes back to when he was coaching at Grundy and I was a high school student at Poquoson. Coach Dresser took a leap of faith on this project and I feel it's been a success.
