EPISODE 1850: In this KEEN ON show, Andrew talks to David J. Helfand, author of THE UNIVERSAL TIMEKEEPERS, about the power of atomic science to unveil the mysteries of unreachably remote time and spaceDavid J. Helfand has served on the Columbia faculty for forty-five years, nearly half that time as Chair of the Department of Astronomy. He has also spent three years at the University of Cambridge, most recently as the Sackler Distinguished Visiting Astronomer, and earlier was a visiting scientist at the Danish Space Research Institute. He has mentored 22 PhD students in high energy astrophysics projects ranging from supernova remnants and neutron stars to the cosmic X-ray background and various areas of radio astronomy. He was a principal in two large radio surveys using the VLA, the FIRST survey of the 10,000-square-degree Sloan Digital Sky Survey footprint, and the MAGPIS survey of the Galactic plane that complements the Spitzer GLIMPSE IR survey. Most of his pedagogical efforts have been aimed at teaching science to non-science majors; in 2004, Columbia's 250th year, he finally succeeded in implementing a vision he began working on in 1982 that has all Columbia first-year students taking his science course, Frontiers of Science, as part of the University's famed Core Curriculum. He received the University's 2001 Presidential Teaching Award and the 2002 Great Teacher Award from the Society of Columbia Graduates. In 2005, he became involved in the effort to create Canada's first independent, non-profit university, Quest University Canada. He was a Visiting Tutor in the University's inaugural semester and served as President & Vice-Chancellor from the Fall of 2008 through 2015. From 2011-2014, Prof. Helfand served as President of the American Astronomical Society and was named a Society Legacy Fellow in 2020. His is currently Chair of the Boards of the American Institute of Physics and of AIP Publishing. He is also a member of the Executive Committee of the Board of Science Counts, an organization formed to communicate with the public about the importance and impact of publicly funded fundamental research. His first book, entitled “A Survival Guide to the Misinformation Age”, provides essential tools any informed citizen must have to combat the tsunami of mis- and dis-information that threatens to drown all rational approaches to personal decision-making and the formation of good public policy.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. In addition to presenting KEEN ON, he is the host of the long-running How To Fix Democracy show. He is also the author of four prescient books about digital technology: CULT OF THE AMATEUR, DIGITAL VERTIGO, THE INTERNET IS NOT THE ANSWER and HOW TO FIX THE FUTURE. Andrew lives in San Francisco, is married to Cassandra Knight, Google's VP of Litigation & Discovery, and has two grown children.
Tom speaks with two local authors who took a path to publishing that many writers and aspiring writers are pursuing: the self-publishing path. Traditional publishers release almost one million books each year and in 2021 self-published authors accounted for nearly 2.3 million more, as reported by Publishers Weekly. Susan Dormady Eisenberg is an arts journalist who has recently published her second novel, One More Seat at the Round Table: A Novel of Broadway's Camelot. H.C. Helfand is a retired attorney and judge who has published two novels in a series called The Arcadia Chronicles. Michael Helfand is a religious liberties professor in Pepperdine and Yale law school. Michael taught me in a seminar in UCLA (you could hear a pin drop) about how religious rights can act as a sword and a shield. That class's goal was to decide if we prefer laws from the judiciary or the legislature. I'm curious after you hear this episode what your opinion is (if we ought to have judge's writing our laws or our state and federal elected congressional representatives.) This episode is fun because Michael provides unique insight on new Supreme Court opinions that restructure religious rights, and his prediction on LGBQT litigation in Yeshiva University (he's an alumnus of YU), U.S. abortion rights, and his favorite Supreme Court cases. The only question Michael refuses to answer is if he's a rabbi.

Professor Michael Helfand stops by Supreme Myths to talk about the religion clauses, the Court, and minority faiths.
This series is sponsored by Ari and Danielle Schwartz in memory of Danielle's grandfather, Mr. Baruch Mappa, Baruch Ben Asher Zelig HaLevi. In this episode of the 18Forty Podcast, we speak to Michael A. Helfand, a Pepperdine Law professor specializing in religious liberty, about the meaning of the First Amendment as it relates to the funding of religious schools. With education so deeply essential to the modern Jewish community, we are confronted with the high cost of private schooling. In America, is the government able to step in and help? Should it? Why doesn't the government fully fund religious schools? What is the “Lemon test”?Does “separation of the church and state” mean the government cannot support any religious institution, or only that it must support all religious institutions equally?Tune in to hear a conversation about the history and status of religious schools in American law.Interview begins at 9:58.Professor Michael Helfand is an expert on religious law and religious liberty. A frequent author and lecturer, his work considers how U.S. law treats religious law, custom and practice, focusing on the intersection of private law and religion in contexts such as religious arbitration, religious contracts and religious torts. He is currently an associate professor at Pepperdine University School of Law and co-director of Pepperdine University's Diane and Guilford Glazer Institute for Jewish Studies. He received his J.D. from Yale Law School and his Ph.D. in Political Science from Yale University. I am sure you know that Nuclear Weapons are a clear and present danger, but do you know how to talk to your neighbors or give a presentation about that danger? In this show, after a quick rant about the GOP betrayal of veterans, Harvey and Jim share portions of a presentation sponsored by Massachusetts Peace Action with guest speaker Ira Helfand of the Physicians for Social Responsibility. In this show, you will hear Dr. Helfand's presentation and get the initial training and consider how you would respond to questions you received.
Back in April, we had writer and friend of the pod Raphael Helfand on the pod and talked about the virality of a music review, whether or not we're post-genre, and how to reconcile the need to get them clicks with publishing (or not publishing) in the public's best interest. This was a really fun conversation, and we're honored it is the penultimate Fat Randy the Podcast. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: [4] Climatic consequences of regional nuclear conflicts (Robock et al., 2007), published by Will Aldred on July 15, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Will's quick summary and hot takes: I've heard this Robock et al. paper get cited a lot, including twice at the SERI Conference '22. This is unfortunate, because while the paper makes important claims relating to nuclear x-risk, these claims are probably wrong. To clarify, the paper being cited at all is not unfortunate, and the authors' writing of this paper started an important debate. For this, I commend them. However, I've almost always heard the paper's conclusion cited in isolation, without acknowledgement of the subsequent debate and counterconclusion. More on this below. Robock et al.'s, paper, published in 2007, concluded that there'd be significant global cooling effects resulting from a regional nuclear war, e.g., between India and Pakistan. "Significant global cooling effects" as Robock et al. refer to it means nuclear autumn bordering on nuclear winter. Reisner et al., a separate group from Los Alamos National Lab, in 2018 published a paper titled "Climate Impact of a Regional Nuclear Weapons Exchange: An Improved Assessment Based On Detailed Source Calculations." Given that the original Robock et al. paper was titled "Climate Impact of a Regional Nuclear Weapons Exchange," this was a spicy move. The Reisner et al. paper effectively reruns the modelling done by Robock et al., but with some different and arguably more sophisticated starting assumptions. Reisner et al. conclude that regional nuclear war would result in negligible global cooling. Robock et al. responded to Reisner et al.'s critique, and Reisner et al. responded to the response. Both groups make some valid arguments, but overall Reisner et al. are closer to the truth, according to me (or at least, the version of me at the time of writing). To explain the heart of the disagreement, I'll first lay out my 3-step model of where disagreement occurs when talking about nuclear winter effects: How much soot gets up into the stratosphere? Given x quantity of soot in the stratosphere, how much cooling occurs? Given y amount of cooling, i) how much crop failure? ii) how much human starvation? It turns out that 2 is pretty uncontroversial, and 1 and 3 are where disagreements lie. I'll return to 3 in other posts (e.g., I'll discuss Helfand, 2013 and Jagermeyr, 2020). 1 is what the Robock and Reisner groups are disagreeing over. Reisner et al. write: While our thorough simulations of the firestorm produce about 3.7 × 109 kg of black carbon, we find that the vast majority of the black carbon never reaches an altitude above weather systems (approximately 12 km). Therefore, our Earth system model simulations conducted with model-informed atmospheric distributions of black carbon produce significantly lower global climatic impacts than assessed in prior studies, as the carbon at lower altitudes is more quickly removed from the atmosphere. In addition, our model ensembles indicate that statistically significant effects on global surface temperatures are limited to the first 5 years and are much smaller in magnitude than those shown in earlier works. None of the simulations produced a nuclear winter effect. Thanks for listening. To help us out with The Nonlinear Library or to learn more, please visit nonlinear.org.
Carly Helfand is setting the example for women to always have a seat at the table in the sports industry. A table in which 84% of athletic scouts' seats are occupied by men. During her time as a scouting assistant for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Carly won a Super-Bowl ring, served as a recruitment specialist with UPENN football, and is a graduate of Drexel University's top-level Sports Management program. She currently works for NBC Universal and is the founder and co-host of the Next Woman Up podcast, which highlights the journey of women in sports and the role that we all play in evolving that medium. In this episode we explore the mentality it takes to pave the way for a career in the sports industry as a woman, the gender stigmas that still exist, and the resilience of the champion that is Carly Helfand.

There aren't enough public schools in Maine. By some estimates, about half of Maine's school districts don't have the facilities or faculty to educate students who live in them. The state's solution is to give families who live in such districts money to send their children to another school—either a different public school further away, or a private school. But Maine doesn't make that funding available to families who choose to send their children to religious schools. In just a few weeks, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in the case of Carson v. Makin, a case that could affect the way that Maine, and the greater United States, deals with the funding of religious schools. On this week's podcast, the legal academic Avi Helfand joins Mosaic editor Jonathan Silver to discuss the amicus brief that he filed for this case, and to explore whether Maine is acting in a way that is consistent with the First Amendment's religious freedom protections. This particular case also allows for Helfand to question more fundamental legal heuristics, such as the supposed distinction in American case-law between a legal entity's religious "status," and its "use" of religion. Musical selections in this podcast are drawn from the Quintet for Clarinet and Strings, op. 31a, composed by Paul Ben-Haim and performed by the ARC Ensemble.

My guest today is Brad Helfand. He's the COO of Vous Vitamin.A direct to consumer supplement company founded by two practicing physicians who identified a need in the market through patient feedback. After so many patients voiced their confusion about what vitamins or supplements they should take, Doctors Block and Levitan decided to solve the problem by creating Vous Vitamin.Vous Vitamin creates a personalized vitamin that fits everyone individually. They do that through an online survey funnel that's really like having a conversation with your doctor. Not only does this approach sell supplements through a quiz funnel, like I've talked about in a previous episode but it also niches down on two factors.PersonalizationVous Vitamin packs all of your recommended nutrients into one tablet that you take twice daily. Which is another pain point that's bening solved here.https://www.vousvitamin.comBrought to you by http://www.creativethirst.com The revenue optimization agency for health supplement companies. August 19, 2020 Dr. Ira Helfand is Co-President of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War. He is also the founding partner of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), the recipient of the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize! Please watch Ira's profound and chilling talk to the Rotary Peace Conference - https://youtu.be/9SVfEWaVssU (starts 12 minutes in) In this talk, we focus on solutions. The UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons was adopted by 122 States in favour (with one vote against and one abstention). It will soon enter into force after being ratified by 50 of those nations. When that happens, how will it be enforced? How can we, the people, join in enforcing it? Today I talked to Jessica Helfand about her new book Face: A Visual Odyssey (MIT Press, 2019) Helfand is a designer, artist, and author. She's taught at Yale University for more than 20 years, cofounded Design Observer, and has had additional roles at a variety of institutions ranging from the American Academy in Rome to the California Institute of Technology. We've always visited churches and museums to gaze at faces. So what's now changed? Today, about two billion images get uploaded daily to social media – of which nearly 100 million are estimated to be selfies. As Daniel Boorstin presaged in his seminal 1962 book The Image: A Guide to Pseudo-Events in America, we've become consumed as a culture by our own self-reflections. In this episode, Helfand guides listeners through everything from caricatures (i.e., loaded portraits), to Facebook and selfie-sticks hitting the mainstream in 2006, to how now every third photograph taken by people from 18 to 24 years of age is of themselves. From the question of who's behind the camera to othering as part of biased behavior, this episode has it all as, indeed, do faces as an enduring centerpiece to how we judge ourselves and others. Tune in (10/30/20) to The Doctor Whisperer Show, at 5:30 pm EST, to welcome Woody Helfand, CEO and Business Owner of Patrice and Associates of Clearwater, and hear him discuss excellence in hiring After years of throwing caution to the wind and living on the edge as an adrenaline junkie, Woody finally stopped. No more chasing hurricanes to surf, no more 100-foot cliff dives, no more full contact Kung Fu in the ring in Miami. No more racing motorcycles and cars, no more trick skateboarding, no more rock, blues, and jazz bands. No more theater. Looking around at his life one day at the ripe old age of 23 he realized he was the only obstacle in his way of making a success of himself. It was truly an epiphany. Woody cut his hair, put on a tie and began to find out what honest, hard work will bring...incredible success! He and his wife Kathy are the co-owners of Patrice & Associates, one of the largest recruiting firms in North America. While they are able to work nationally in scope, their enormous territory runs from Port Richey, Florida all the way down US 19 to Indian Rocks and all points in between including the City of Oldsmar. Woody is ecstatic to be back at work on a local platform as the last company he and his wife owned was national. He is very excited to be a part of AMPLIFY Clearwater. The short story is that they sold their business after 10 years and had seller's remorse before the deal was closed. Woody's counsel contacted the buyer and said Woody wanted to buy the business back and they never did respond. It took all of 2 months to realize retirement was not for them. Muttering under his breath one day he said to his wife as he passed her in the hallway, “This retirement stuff stinks”, Kathy said, “I'm getting a job I can't stand it.” And that's how they came to decide that they worked together very well and wanted to purchase a business that would do good for others before they were rewarded which is how they ended up at Patrice & Associates. Woody Helfand brings extensive sales leadership staffing, hospitality and senior leadership experience to the P&A team and makes him uniquely qualified to identify top talent for his nationwide clients. Woody is a Certified Executive Search Specialist. This designation provides the knowledge and experience to recruit talent across all business platforms. Judith Helfand and Face2Face host David Peck talk about her new film Love and Stuff, Mothers, grief, defiance and resilience, living well and why we all need to do a stuff review.Watch the 10-minute version on the New York Times page here. And learn more about Judith and her work here.Synopsis:Seven months after helping her terminally ill mother die in home-hospice, filmmaker Judith Helfand becomes a “new old” single mother at 50. Overnight, she’s pushed to deal with her “stuff”: 63 boxes of her parents’ heirlooms overwhelming her office-turned-future-baby’s room, the weight her mother had begged her to lose, and the reality of being a half-century older than her daughter.Love & Stuff follows a set of universal, life-changing moments: death, birth, new life, the burden and blessing of your dead parent’s stuff, the insanity and exhilaration of being a new “old” single parent in your fifties and the possibility of transformation. Judith wirtes, “My parenting trajectory includes everything from the struggle to deal with all that additional baby “stuff”, to the hell of strapping baby Theo into a stroller while she’s wearing a snowsuit and I’m overweight and sweating in my winter coat, to the shame of not really being able to get down on the floor with the other parents and kids, to navigating “the terrible twos” while healing from gastric sleeve surgery, to facing the psyche-crushing threes to the thrill of losing 85 lbs and actually being able to sit at Theo’s little table in a little chair -- and get up.”About Judith:Judith Helfand is best known for her ability to take the dark worlds of chemical exposure, heedless corporate behavior and environmental injustice and make them personal, highly-charged and entertaining. Three of her films premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, with national broadcasts on PBS (POV), HBO and The Sundance Channel. Her films include The Uprising of ‘34, the Sundance award winning and 2X Emmy nominated Blue Vinyl, its Peabody Award-winning prequel A Healthy Baby Girl, and Everything’s Cool. A committed field-builder and educator, Helfand co-founded Working Films in 1999, and Chicken & Egg Pictures in 2005. As part of her work at Chicken & Egg Pictures, where Helfand was Creative Director for almost a decade, she was a Producer on the Oscar-nominated, Dupont winning short, The Barber of Birmingham, and Executive Producer for the award-winning films Brooklyn Castle, Semper Fi: Always Faithful, Private Violence and Hot Girls Wanted. In 2007 Judith received a United States Artist Fellowship, one of 50 awarded annually to “America’s finest living artists.” In 2016 she was invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. She is currently in post-production on Cooked, a feature documentary about extreme heat, the politics of disaster and survival by zip code. Kendra Espinoza is a low-income single mother from Montana who applied for a tax-credit scholarship program—created by the state legislature in 2015—that would allow her to keep her daughters enrolled in a private Christian school. But soon after implementing the program, the state banned any of the scholarship funds from going to religious schools, thus excluding Espinoza and her family from receiving support. The ensuing legal battle made its way to the U.S. Supreme Court, which heard oral arguments in Espinoza v. Montana Department of Revenue last month. The case implicates the religion clauses of the First Amendment, the 14th Amendment’s Equal Protection Clause, and the notorious “Blaine Amendments” adopted by many states during the heyday of anti-Catholic bigotry in America. In this episode, Professor Michael Avi Helfand of Pepperdine University joins special guest host and Tikvah Senior Director Harry Ballan for a discussion of this important religious-liberty case. You’ll hear these two brilliant lawyers examine the knotty legal doctrines at issue, how the current’s justices are likely to rule, and why Espinoza should matter to every American citizen. Musical selections in this podcast are drawn from the Quintet for Clarinet and Strings, op. 31a, composed by Paul Ben-Haim and performed by the ARC Ensemble as well as "Ulterior" by Swan Production.
Twenty-five years after the 1995 Chicago heat wave, COOKED: Survival by Zip Code examines the events that led to the deaths of 739 people, mostly Black and in the poorest neighborhoods of the city. The film arrives at a time of growing calls across the country to declare racism a public health crisis and to reinvest in communities ravaged by the long-term impact of structural racism. A recent NYU study found life expectancy differentials as wide as 20-30 years linked to racial and ethnic segregation between neighborhoods in American cities. Adapted from Eric Klinenberg’s ground-breaking book ‘HEAT WAVE: A Social Autopsy of Disaster in Chicago,’ the film is directed and produced by Peabody Award-winning director Judith Helfand (Blue Vinyl, A Healthy Baby Girl, Everything’s Cool), produced by Fenell Doremus (co-producer of Academy Award-nominated Abacus: Small Enough to Jail), and Kartemquin Films, the award-winning Chicago documentary production house behind Minding the Gap and Hoop Dreams. In COOKED, Helfand challenges herself, and ultimately all of us, to respond to the man-made disasters taking place in towns and cities across the country before the next unprecedented “natural” disaster hits. Director Judith Helfand joins us to talk about the systemic racism that makes the neighborhoods of the poorest the most likely location for Independent Lens: COOKED: Survival by Zip Code will have its national television debut on the PBS television series Independent Lens on Monday, February 3 at 10:00 pm (check local listings), preceding coverage of the Iowa Caucuses. The film will also be available to stream at PBS.org and on the free PBS Video App throughout Black History Month. Jessica Helfand resists taking center stage. If anything, she wants to give her place in spotlight to the audience. An author and Yale professor and co-founder of *Design Observer*, Helfand thinks that the time has come to stop gawking at the stars pontificating the podium and instead start conversations—meaningful ones—with each other. To this end, she recently prototyped something she calls The Next Stage, in our Boston studio. And the moment that experiment ended, our Lee Moreau jogged her over to a conference room to record a podcast reflecting on the experience. Listen closely, and you'll hear her say some bright, provocative, and deeply humane things, such as: • “Performance is fine if it's theatre. Performance is fine if it's sports. But why does performance have to happen in social engagement, in personal interaction?” • “Even failure has become a buzzword. Failure ™.” • “I love podcasting because just as I loved like this conversation this morning because, the minute you put other people in the mix, the vocabulary changes, and you get much more of a rich soup. There's more flavors.” • “The whole point is to spawn better, easier, more mindful, more consistent, more connected ideas in the world. That's civilization in progress.” • “Viral is not a word that's good if you're an epidemiologist or an immunologist.” • “Designers are really good at making stuff look cool. At making stuff look shiny. And I don't think that the world is a shiny place. And so, we would be doing ourselves and each other a disservice if we didn't ask some ruthlessly objective questions about what that means.” • “Why are we autodidacts in terms of technology and not of philosophy or ideas?” • “I write to figure out what I can't make in the studio. And I make things to figure out what I can't write. And I teach to keep myself inspired by the ideas of others—and it's just not enough to do it in the classroom.” Host: Pete Chapin Editor: Kyp Pilalas Producer: Ken Gordon

And finally, there are significant financial issues that can impact the running of a business, such as full disclosure of the finances and operations of a business, when one business partner is going through divorce. On Sunday October 9, 2011, what was billed as the great nuclear debate, nuclear weapons making in Kansas City, was held at the University of Missouri Kansas City. The event was cosponsored by The Community of Reason KC, with the KC Chapter of Physicians for Social Responsibility and KC Peace Planters. The Maurice Smith, retired staff engineer at the National Nuclear Security Administration’s Kansas City nuclear weapons parts Plant, currently operated by Honeywell, debated Ira Helfand, M.D., Emergency Medicine Physician in Leeds, Mass., Physicians for Social Responsibility Board Member and Vice President of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War. Mr. Smith argued in support of continuing the nuclear weapons manufacturing program as part of a policy of deterrance. Dr. Helfand argued against nuclear weapons production and supported steps to reach a nuclear weapons-free world. The debate was moderated by Jabulani Leffal, host of KCUR FM’s Central Standard.
