Today's conversation is with AOB alum, Sophie Vaessen. Sophie, who is based in Berlin, Germany, helps employees & leaders create more confidence & well-being in their career through mindset & breath work. As someone who struggled with overwhelm and anxiety while working in a corporate setting, I intimately know how having breathwork as a tool would have made all the difference in my experience. It is so freaking important to not just keep these practices in the world of wellness or spirituality, but to extend the reach of mindfulness practices, like breathwork and meditation, into spaces that really desperately need practices to support becoming more present, releasing the overwhelm of stress, and feeling more connected. The reality is not everyone is built to be an entrepreneur. Not everybody wants to be an entrepreneur. There are plenty of positions and careers and life paths that don't include working for yourself. My goal and my intention bringing Sophie on the podcast is to show that there is a way to bring fulfillment into those spaces. In this conversation we talk about what inspired Sophie to bring breathwork into corporate spaces, the results she's seen with her clients and her tip for easily incorporating mindfulness into your morning routine.People don't give themselves the space to ask themselves, 'what do I need in this moment?' A short breath work practice, a short meditation practice or even just sitting in the sun and taking a few conscious breaths is just so helpful because it sets you up for what is coming next. - Sophie VaessenWhat we talk about:How to easily fit mindfulness into a morning routineRecognizing how breathwork helps you respond versus reactBenefits of bringing breathwork and meditation into the corporate spaceWhy Sophie was attracted to AOBSophie's top takeaways from and favorite parts of AOBWhen you're talking about the workspace, the body probably doesn't need that extra cup of coffee, right? Direction Not Perfection

Thanksgiving is under our belt (literally and figuratively) and many of us are up before dawn to start shopping Black Friday deals. We are right in the middle of holiday craziness and tending to our health and fitness can be hard to do. Today, I interview Julie Watters, a visual and performing artist, personal trainer and coach who uses creativity, movement and health education to engage children and adults in holistic wellness. She will share with you an idea that you can jump on now to reign in the craziness and ride a wave of positive effects right through the end of the year. There are lots of schedule changes and traditions that put extra burdens on your time, energy and money through the holidays. You can fall off rails unless you have a strong No game. To help you get through this time of year more effectively, Julie has declared this month, “No”vember:Say No to self-doubt, yes to self-encouragementSay No to self-neglectSay No to unprotected timeSay No to DOING and Yes to BEING (we are in fact human beings and not human doers) To help you learn to say no, you need to plug good messages in your ears and constantly read, research and get appropriate feedback. Lean into your intuition your deep gut feelings, and your spiritual connection. Julie was on the brink of a burn out when she had an epiphany. Many of the painful and preventable experiences or exchanges that brought damage to her relationships or set her back, were opportunities that she missed saying no, even with her own kids, who are a teenager and a toddler. Both are in major developmental phases of their lives so there are a lot of boundary struggles. She is a gatekeeper who decides how much to let them reach towards independence or to nip it in the bud. You need to know your own boundaries too, so can deal with conversations when they come up. It is a lot of responsibility to tell kids no and it takes a lot of energy to stick to it especially knowing they aren’t’ happy with us. We have to realize we are doing them a great service for later in life. That makes Julie a good role model and hero to her kids. The goal is for her kids to have a good sense of self and a good moral compass. No is a big part of that and it is critical that you learn to use it. Having heroes to model themselves after is beneficial to everyone. Julie’s health heroes were her grandparents. One of them had a grand-mal seizure and was told he may never walk again but he persevered and proved them wrong. Her 93-year-old Step-grandmother has a healthy outlook and attitude and stays active. She was blessed with a positive mindset. Julie wants to cultivate that in herself and her clients. If we aren’t careful, we can figure we are nearing the end and give up. We need to play and learn something new all the time. You don’t have to expedite your own demise. Today you do feel good so don’t waste it. It is important to know that you are stronger than you think you are. It is all in your mind. Look for health heroes who don’t fit the typical stereotypes that the media is trying to sell. You may think you want to be like the models you see in print and on tv. But they must weigh a certain amount, be a specific height and walk a certain way to sell products and make others want to be like them. That can be damaging to their mental and physical health. Instead, look for health heroes in longevity. Break health myths. Julie’s advice: believe you belong here, find your whole self. There is more to you than eating, more to you than moving, more than your job. Reserve some time energy and money for yourself. You are worth it. The healthier and happier you are, the healthier and happier the people around you will be. It will strengthen your relationships and ripple outward.Resources:IG: @happyfitcamperhttps://www.instagram.com/tv/CHwSmgbpfj6/?igshid=9sb1zgybl3jlBoundaries Book:https://www.amazon.com/Boundaries-Updated-Expanded-When-Control/dp/0310351804/ref=sr_1_3?crid=QEMAM5BG8QSF&dchild=1&keywords=boundaries+book&qid=1606435816&sprefix=bounda%2Caps%2C488&sr=8-3HomeFit Personal Training:IG: @homefitUSAwww.healthaccountabilitycoach.comwww.facebook.com/houselifestylesIG: @houselifestyles

Melainie Rogers, MS, RDN, CDN, CEDRD-S, is a Certified Eating Disorder Registered Dietitian (CEDRD) and Supervisor and is dedicated to supporting others in their quest to achieve long-term recovery. She is the Founder and Executive Director of BALANCE eating disorder treatment center™ and melainie rogers nutrition, llc. In this episode, Erin talks to Melainie Rogers about how to know if you have a problem with food. Melainie says to ask yourself: ‘How much of my day do I spend worrying about food?’ If you often ask yourself question after question about food each day, then it might suggest a problem or obsessiveness. We strive to have a neutral relationship with food. Erin likes to think of food as fuel for our bodies. Also, if anxiety is stirred up surrounding food, it could suggest an unhealthy relationship with food. Then, Melainie explains the difference between disordered eating and an eating disorder. These fall along a spectrum. Disordered eating is when symptoms of overeating or restricting occur. These behaviors may happen once a week or once a month. However, it’s still distressing and should be of concern. Someone who is restricting most days of the week or also bingeing, that’s an eating disorder. The symptoms and behaviors are the same, it’s just less frequency. Disordered eating is still important, troublesome, and dangerous. Later, Melainie explains how social media plays a role in our self-image. Social media will give us a constant stream of images for us to compare ourselves to. Pre social media, we were only exposed to TV, magazines, and billboards. With social media, we have it 24/7. As we scroll, we are comparing ourselves. Whenever we compare ourselves to others, it always make us feel bad. Social media is one of the reasons we are seeing an uptick in eating disorders at this time. Stay tuned as Erin and Melainie talk about the relationship between women’s thoughts and their diets, why we need to change our “healthy” eating vocabulary, and much more!   In This Episode:    [00:30]About today’s guest, Melainie Rogers [01:00] How to know if you have a problem with food [03:00] The difference between eating disorders and binge-eating [06:10] How social media plays a role in our self-image [10:05] The connection between women’s thoughts and their diets [13:25] Why we shouldn’t say “clean eating” [17:15] About Orthorexia [20:50] Taking baby steps with your thoughts [24:20] When to take the first step in seeking help   Quotes:    “Disordered eating is like a badly sprained ankle – it’s still really bad, it might bother you for a few years, causing you a lot of pain, distress, and discomfort.”   “When we compare ourselves, we usually feel worse about ourselves; it lowers our self-esteem and lowers our self-confidence. Also, it creates a distortion that we need to look like that person.”  “Our mental anxiety can only increase because we feel like we are performing shortly.”    “The most helpful relationship with people is food neutrality.” Resources: IG: https://www.instagram.com/erinroefit/       website: erinroe.com Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/erinroefit/   Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1208735172667732/ YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCVFqZiXhmUD5G3c7fAJ5m-w?sub_confirmation=1   LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/erin-roe-564066195/ Pinterest: pinterest.com/erinlr0318 Twitter: https://twitter.com/erinroefit Join my posse at our podcast Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/MyEmpowerProject/ Redefining Wellness: The Ultimate Diet Free Guide: https://www.amazon.com/Redefining-Wellness-Ultimate-Diet-Guide/dp/1674393180 __________________________ Guest: Melainie Rogers   Feel free to reach out to Melainie below:   Twitter: https://twitter.com/MelainieRogers   Website: https://balancedtx.com/   Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/balancedtx/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BALANCEedtc/   YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6FNWjY30kMH1cFzVz2qvhw   Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/balancedtx/   Free Recovery Handbook: https://balancedtx.com/free-eating-disorder-recovery-handbook __________________________
