Years ago when I started my Tough Mudder journey, I had no idea what I was getting into. But from the beginning, there was one man who stood out, the official Tough Mudder MC. The first time I took a knee in the mud at the start line and heard Sean Corvelle say "When was the last time you did something for the first time?", I knew I was in the right place. In this episode, I had the privilege of speaking with Sean about his stand-up comic years, how he came into the Tough Mudder community, the background of his now iconic saying, and the difference he aims to make in this world. You can hear more from Sean on "No Excuses: The Official Tough Mudder Podcast" by visiting https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/no-excuses-the-official-tough-mudder-podcast/id1551716219, on IG @seancorvelle, and on the Facebooks at https://www.facebook.com/seancorvelle. "I always tell people that cancer saved my life. It absolutely made me find happiness. I don't know that I really knew how to live before I realized that I was dying."When 30-year-old Courtney Burnett was completing her medical residency in Thailand, she started experiencing strange symptoms. Her left hand would tingle and cramp and her throat would do the same. A stressful few days eventually led her to diagnose herself with a brain tumor. The journey that followed was emotional, chaotic, and eventually peaceful. In this episode of 'No Excuses,' Courtney tells Sean how cancer saved her life and led her to share her story in her memoir 'Difficult Gifts.' While we may not always want to receive them, life's difficult gifts often allow us to open our eyes and appreciate that which is right in front of us. This emotional episode of 'No Excuses' is one that will touch your heart and maybe even open your own eyes to the difficult gifts in your life. Bonus episode of World’s Toughest Podcast! Last Minute Toughest Mudder Atlanta Edition! We start with a weather report for Toughest Mudder Atlanta. It’s going to be hot. 69 degrees at 12:00 midnight. The coldest it will get during the race is 60 degrees at 6:00am. No rain in the forecast but humidity will be between 20 and 25 percent for the eight hours. Jim Campbell ran Tougher Mudder this morning and talks about the course. Block Ness Monster is DEEP this time. Be careful guys. After we talk about the course we talk about the elite athletes running tonight and who to watch. Sean Corvelle was working the start line and was outstanding as always. We heard through the grapevine that TMHQ has added four additional dates to Sean’s schedule for 2017. Sean had a great line he doesn’t use all the time: “Tough Mudder does not build obstacles to hurt you. Any fool can do that. We create a course to challenge you.” We also talk to David Thanos about the course. He ran Tougher Mudder this morning. He also talks about the water depth at Block Ness Monster and the rule changes to Tougher Mudder. TMHQ has added penalty loops to Funky Monkey and Kong. If you fail either of those two obstacles you no longer have the option to retry the obstacle. You must take the penalty loop. However, even if you fail them, as long as you complete the penalty loop you will qualify for the Tougher Mudder headband. If you finish on the podium tonight at Toughest Mudder Atlanta be sure to find Will Hicks afterward for the World’s Toughest Continental Breakfast. We’ll talk about the race while you enjoy some fruit, carbs, and a chilled Starbucks Carmel Macchiato or a Throwback Mt. Dew (with Real Sugar!) Wesley Kerr joins us to talk about Toughest Mudder Los Angeles. We talk about five main areas of preparation for Tough Mudder's first ever eight hour race. We discuss Pacing, Obstacles, Pitting, Nutrition, and General Tips for the race. Because the first four hours are on a 5 mile loop with little to no elevation gain, it will be important to get your miles in early. This is especially true if you are trying to reach 50 miles this weekend. An interesting thing Wesley told me is he's not planning on wearing a wetsuit. As long as he keeps moving fast enough, he's planning to wear his red running tights or possibly his 1mm thick Frogskins. By way of disclaimer Will said he will ABSOLUTELY be wearing a wetsuit, so everyone else will have to make up their own mind. We are putting together a Sean Corvelle appreciation episode. If you'd like to be a part of it call (302) 786-9868 and leave a voicemail with your name and a story about how Sean has made an impact on your life. Who would you like to hear on the podcast? Tougher Mudder New Orleans Recap. Kailey Brodhacker and Mark James join us to talk about their experiences at the first ever Tougher Mudder, held this past weekend near New Orleans, Louisiana. Kailey finished in third place for the women and talks about her experience helping her competitor complete an obstacle and then having to run her down afterward. Mark ran the course and did a write up for his new blog, ToughMudderSphere.blogspot.com on his way home from the race. He talks about the differences between the requirements for Tougher Mudder and Tough Mudder, such as removing the first ring from Kong so you have to jump out and grab onto the second ring before you can swing your way across. The top finishers at Tougher Mudder New Orleans are: Men: 1st. Matthew Kempson, 1:34.06 2nd. Eddie Henry, 1:41.24 3rd. Brandon Eddards, 1:42.15 Women: 1st. Theresa Edwards, 1:41.19 2nd. Nikki Perry, 2:28.00 3rd. Kailey Brodhacker, 2:34.43 Stay tuned for the end of the episode to hear Sean Corvelle brief the Tougher Mudder wave and give them the competitive pledge before he sends them out to find their best. Finally, I will play an interview I did a few months ago with Dane Rauschenberg. Dane has run a ton of marathons, written two books, and has done very well on the speaking at marathon expo circuit. Along the way he has had a lot of distractors. One even went as far as to create a website disparaging his efforts. I was really curious to find out more about him.
First up, I welcome Sean "Run Bum" Blanton back to the show. Sean is an ultra runner who puts on races with what I like to call "OCR Spirit". It was one of those things in my life that just clicked...boom. This is where I'm supposed to be, and I've been doing it ever since.- Sean CorvelleSean Corvelle has played a variety of different roles in his career as an actor, a comedian, and a television host. But for the last eleven years he has been inspiring and motivating athletes and weekend warriors across the world at the Tough Mudder starting line. He is also the host of Tough Mudder's No Excuses podcast of which I was recently a guest on (you can hear my interview with Sean here.)Like most of us, Sean came to Hollywood with stars in his eyes hoping to build a career that would bring out the best in him - a career that fulfilled him while also allowing him to be creative, to perform, and to ultimately be successful. Similar to my own path, Sean discovered that the more success he attained in Hollywood, the further away he got from himself and his core values. The higher he climbed the ladder, the more it burned him out, and the less he wanted to be on the ladder at all. Tough Mudder became the unexpected calling that Sean never imagined. In today's conversation Sean shares his advice, experience, and stories about what it took to listen to his soul in order to leave behind a career in Hollywood. If you have ever felt stuck or you're unsure of the right path for you, get ready to be inspired and motivated to take just one small step towards forward progress today. Whether you have run an obstacle course race or not (or if you could honestly care less about mud runs), the lessons Sean shares in this conversation apply to every aspect of life.Want to Hear More Episodes Like This One?» Click here to subscribe and never miss another episode Here's What You'll Learn:How does Sean answer the question, "what do you do for a living?"How he got the job as Tough Mudder's starting line inspirational speaker. What Sean's first ever Tough Mudder starting line speech was like and how it evolved.Sean discusses the audition process in Hollywood from his perspective. Why it's important to not let success define you.How he became known as "The Mirror Man".Instrumental quotes from Tough Mudder and what Sean learned from the requests for them.Lessons learned from Hollywood. Why Sean believes our souls don't change, instead they just expand. How Tough Mudder is designed to be done together and what people learn from that experience. The two common excuses people use to avoid signing up for a race. How to overcome your hesitations to race. The lessons learned in Tough Mudder apply to every aspect of life even if you just show up to volunteer and not race.Inspiring stories of Tough Mudder runners never quitting.Sean's advice to his younger self in his darkest moment.Useful Resources Mentioned:No Excuses Episode 61: Zack Arnold on How to Optimize Yourself - Tough MudderCarlos Alazraqui - Comedian/Actor/ProducerContinue to Listen & LearnEp165: How to Overcome Doubting Yourself When You Know You're Meant For More | with Sandy Zimmerman, ANWEp122: 'Superfood Hunter' Darin Olien On How To Be Healthy, Fit, and Eternally AwesomeEp120: The Ninja Warrior Mother-Daughter Dynamic Duo, Part 1 | with Ginny MacColl, ANWEp121: The Ninja Warrior Mother-Daughter Dynamic Duo, Part 2 | with Jessie Graff, ANWEp06: Defining Your Purpose and Living Large | with Tony HortonEp68: How to Go From Couch to the (Spartan) Course | with Rose Wetzel, ANWEp60: Getting 1% Better Every Single Day | with Westley Silvestri, ANWEp49: Mastering The Mental Game of Focus | with Kevin Bull, ANWEp67: How to Be 'Better Than Yesterday' | With Jimmy Choi, ANWGuest Bio: Sean Corvelle Born in Annapolis MD, Sean Corvelle grew up partly in Baltimore and the other half of his childhood in the San Francisco Bay Area.
