With significant disparities in diagnosis, treatment, and funding when compared to men, women's health has long been underserved. These gaps affect not only individual health outcomes, they also have societal and economic implications which are highlighted by a recent report by the World Economic Forum and The McKinsey Health Institute which addresses a $1 trillion dollar opportunity to improve lives and economies by mitigating these disparities. Factors like societal perception, clinical practice, and financial investment all play an important part in women's health. Addressing the gender health gap and overcoming issues like the misdiagnosis of diseases in women, increasing women's representation in clinical trials, and advocating for greater financial investment in women's health are all crucial steps in building a more equal healthcare system for all. Today, we're joined by board members of the World Economic Forum's Global Alliance for Women's Health to discuss how building a more equitable healthcare system can drive meaningful change, improve healthcare for women, and create access to significant economic potential worldwide. In this episode, host Elisabeth Staudinger, Member of the Managing Board of Siemens Healthineers, is joined by fellow World Economic Forum's Global Alliance for Women's Health board members Nadia Fettah, Minister of Economy and Finance for the Government of Morocco and Shyam Bishen, Head of the Centre for Health & Healthcare at the World Economic Forum. What you'll learn in this episode:Despite living longer, women spend 25% more time in poor health than menWomen are twice as likely to be misdiagnosed after having a heart attack than men. In this podcast episode, host Gary interviews Sharif Gray, a personal injury attorney from Virginia, who shares his path from VMI valedictorian to law school, military service, and his current legal practice. Gray discusses the influence of his godfather and the film "A Few Good Men" on his career choice, his dedication to helping people through personal injury law, and the significance of a major case victory. He also talks about the challenges young lawyers face, including gaining trial experience and managing student debt, while emphasizing the importance of passion and authenticity in the legal field. Gray reflects on the personal fulfillment he derives from making a difference in clients' lives and the freedom that comes with running his own practice. First Major Jury Verdict (00:15:31) Sharif's million and a half dollar trip and fall case, the intentional framing of the case, and the confidence gained from the successful trial. Keys to Being an Excellent Plaintiff's Trial Attorney (00:17:33) The importance of framing the case, capitalizing on defense missteps, and positioning the plaintiff as a victim of the defendant's actions. Building a Practice and Developing Business (00:19:38) Sharif's diverse strategies for business development, including referrals, digital presence, networking, and creating a broad net for opportunities. Challenges faced by young lawyers (00:21:48) Sharif Gray discusses the financial burden of law school debt and the limited options for gaining trial experience as a young lawyer. Sharif is a trial lawyer and a partner at Blackburn, Conte, Schilling & Click. He tried cases as a United States Army JAG Officer and as a Drug and Vice Prosecutor, served as a Federal Judicial Law Clerk at a trial court, and now takes cases to trial as a personal injury and criminal defense lawyer. There is nothing more professionally exciting for Sharif than preparing for and going to trial. And there is no greater privilege for Sharif than getting results for his clients.  Sharif cares deeply about his work and the people he represents. His record is evidence of this: in the Army, he successfully defended hundreds of soldiers at trial, in adverse administrative proceedings, and under investigation; as a prosecutor, he pursued justice for victims and earned a reputation among judges and defense attorneys for being persuasive and fair; and as a personal injury lawyer, he has won millions of dollars in verdicts and settlements.  Sharif graduated valedictorian and as a distinguished military graduate from the Virginia Military Institute. Among other honors, his class elected him to serve as a prosecutor on VMI's Honor Court, where he prosecuted honor offenses and first discovered his love for trial work.  Sharif received his law degree from the University of Virginia. During law school, he served on the Virginia Journal of Criminal Law's Managing Board; led an Army Reserve Drill Sergeant Unit; and clerked for the United States Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Virginia, the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office, and the United States Solicitor General's Office.  Sharif earned his masters of law degree in trial advocacy from the Temple University Beasley School of Law, which has consistently been ranked as the nation's top trial training program for more than twenty years.  Sharif also graduated from the Gerry Spence Method — the premier training for trial lawyers who represent people.  Away from work, Sharif enjoys spending time with his wife and son, learning songs on his acoustic guitar, playing on a kickball team, and working out each morning at a CrossFit gym.  Sharif also operates RVA Personal Injury Lawyers and UCMJ Trial Lawyers, and he co-hosts the RVA Trial Lawyers Podcast. They use this new technology because it reduces the chemical burden of remediation contractors.  Because Dot is a dry form product, their waste and shipping burden is markedly lower. Roger Berry is a passionate and experienced CEO and investor in high-potential technology companies with a focus on sustainability. Two decades plus of experience in private equity, covering fundraising, team incubation, deal due diligence, sustainable technology development and ultimately as CEO for a series of technology companies, has prepared Roger for his current role in building a transformative sustainable chemistry company in Sudoc. Roger has experience in analyzing and managing turnarounds and start-up ventures. Roger was a Partner with TEM Capital, an early-to-growth stage fund manager focused on clean energy and sustainable resources. On behalf of TEM, Roger served as CEO of two businesses including Clean Electricity Generation (CEG), a company with proprietary clean energy technology. Roger was Head of Group Funds and Investor Relations for Climate Change Capital, a fund manager with over $1.6 billion of assets. From 2000 to 2006, Roger was a Managing Partner and co-founder of Liberty Global Partners, an advisory and placement firm focused on emerging markets private equity. Liberty Global Partners raised significant commitments from institutional investors and led the creation of the Emerging Markets Private Equity Association. Roger had formative experiences in the United States Congress and First Lady Hillary Clinton's health care task force. He subsequently worked in international development and conflict resolution. Roger draws inspiration from the times he spent with historic figure Nelson Mandela and other leaders of South Africa's transition to democracy. He first met President Mandela in 1993, before he became President, where he helped coordinate his testimony in front of the congressional International Affairs subcommittee on Africa. He subsequently went to work for the National Democratic Institute, living in Southern Africa and supporting the new leadership to establish key legislative processes. While in South Africa, he was also part of a team that facilitated discussions for the conflicted parties of Northern Ireland with the leadership of South Africa's government including President Mandela. This event was credited as a helpful step in the process of achieving reconciliation in Northern Ireland. Motivated by the impact of learning, Roger developed and co-teaches a course on private equity for the International Business Program at Tufts University Fletcher Graduate School. Roger serves on several Boards including the Managing Board of Aptima Ventures, the commercialization arm of Aptima Inc, a company that has done over $300 million of R&D on how technology and data can assess and enhance human performance for NASA, the US military and various agencies of health. Roger is the co-chair of the Harvard Alumni Committee for Cambridge, which is responsible for interviewing all of the city's applicants to the college. Roger is an honors graduate of Harvard University (1990) where he advanced to the number two position on the nationally ranked division one tennis team. He lives in Cambridge, MA with his wife Sonia Perez Villanueva, their three children Oscar, Alonso, and Alana, and their young beagle Millie.

In the 39th episode of the New Leadership Podcast, Cedrik Neike, CEO Digital Industries & Member of the Managing Board at Siemens AG, and Sebastian Morgner discuss technologies of the future, such as the digital twin, and what the "Siemensstadt" project is all about. In this conversation, Cedrik Neike gives us exciting insights into the visions of Siemens Digital Industries. Sebastian Morgner and Cedrik Neike cover a range of different topics in this podcast. They start with some personal reflections on the rapidly growing opportunities new technologies such as smartphones provide and the city of Berlin as a melting pot of cultures where innovation can happen. They deep dive into the Berlin locality “Siemensstadt” and explore the main ideas behind this project which include making it not only the future of work but also of living. Neike also outlines the next steps of development for this new ecosystem and the overarching vision of the project. The conversation then focuses on the implications of Covid-19 and the learnings Cedrik Neike took away from being appointed CEO of Digital Industries during that time. Realizing the importance of social connections and digitalization were some of the main factors for Neike, but both discussion partners also outline the opportunities for new leadership and work models Covid-19 brought about. The importance of digitalization is also illustrated by examples of how new concepts such as “digital twins” helped develop new Covid vaccines in a record time. After explaining digital twins in more detail and outlining how such methods can make development faster, more efficient, more sustainable, and more flexible they talk about medicine as a possible next frontier for these technologies. Another big issue addressed in this podcast is the topic of sustainability. In this context, Sebastian Morgner and Cedrik Neike discuss among other the question of whether businesses have to be the main driver of a carbon neutral future and how much climate protection can be achieved through technological progress. The podcast ends with Cedrik Neike sharing what he looks for in leaders and some personal advice for young talents.

This year while planning my year end fundraising training workshop, I had multiple people mention they wanted to learn more about steering their teams. they said they often feel they're on a team of one, meaning all by themselves trying to get it done. I've managed a lot of people since starting my business in 2005, but they were all were paid employees, and for a reason: it's a lot easier to manage people who depend on you to make a living than board members or volunteers, who don't get paid for their services. I called upon Debbie DiVirgilio for outside expertise. Debbie helps nonprofit organizations with broken boards patch them back together so they can be a cohesive unit that supports you once again. In this episode, she explains to us: The role your board members and volunteers should play in your year-end fundraiser. How to reset their expectations to get the most out of your efforts. Ways to deal with board members and volunteers who aren't comfortable asking for money. How to avoid getting stuck in perpetual planning mode from the get-go, and how to get unstuck if you do find yourself there.

The current pandemic has made hospitals ground zero across the globe. If we haven’t personally been admitted into hospital by the virus, we can easily imagine scenes of medical staff rushing through crowded corridors, shuffling past one another, concealed head to toe in blue PPE anonymity. At some point over the past three months, this has been the daily reality in every hospital. How are hospitals managing during this unprecedented crisis? These are facilities well accustomed to “life or death” situations, but during a pandemic, downtime is a luxury that may never come. Yet, hospitals remain places of business that require management. Particularly in times of crisis, faculty need motivation to push on, and good leadership is more important than ever. University hospitals have the added challenge of overseeing a student population. Today, we’re getting a glimpse of what this crisis has been like from inside one of the top ranked University hospitals in the world. Our guest is Alexander Norbash, MD, an Interventional Neuroradiologist from the University of California, San Diego, where he is the Chair and Professor of Radiology, and the Associate Vice Chancellor. There, his focus is on arteriovenous vascular malformations and intracranial aneurysms, and he was among the first clinician-interventionalists to develop and describe the technology of stenting for the carotid and intracranial arteries. Dr. Christoph Zindel is Member of the Managing Board of Siemens Healthineers and holds a Doctor of Medicine M.D.SOME QUESTIONS WE ASK:How is the current situation affecting you? He then moved to the General Electric Company where he was the General Counsel of GE Plastics and then Vice President and General Counsel of GE Healthcare, based in London. In 2007, Peter moved to Germany to join the Managing Board of Siemens as General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer. Peter’s roles at GE and Siemens involved working across the globe with teams of people across many time zones and cultures. During our conversation, he points out the importance of really listening to what is being said as sometimes there are truly “no words” or even comparable legal constructs that address the issue at the heart of the client or colleague’s concern. When asked about the role that culture plays in compliance, he shares some very unique observations about changing the frame of discussions regarding compliance in order to change the compliance culture in an organization. At the end of our discussion, Peter also gives us his tips for how lawyers can work more successfully across cultures.
