If you've ever felt stressed (like, you know, every other mom who's lived through the past two years), and if you've ever tried to do something about it, it's likely that someone, somewhere along the way, has asked you this question: “What do you do for self-care?” We know, we know, that can cause quite a visceral reaction! In fact, it does just that for our very own Dr. Amy. But—here's the good news! According to our guest on this episode of Brainy Moms, Dr. Tamara Beckford, self-care is probably not what you think! Join Dr. Amy Moore and Sandy Zamalis as they chat with Dr. Beckford about her own self-care journey, where to start if you're ready to embark on your own journey, and how very important our own self-care is to our children's understanding of what it means to be a parent. Because, statistically speaking, many of them will eventually parent their own kids! We really enjoyed this conversation, and left with some personal, real-world ideas for how to reframe self-care as a reasonable practice—that may or may not involve journaling OR the nail salon. About Dr. Tamara Beckford: Dr. Tamara Beckford is a board-certified emergency physician, wife, and mom. Welcome to episode #21 of the Winning at Fibromyalgia podcast! We have a special guest today Dr. Tamara Beckford. She is a Mom, Wife, ER physician, Host of Docs Who Care Podcast, Speaker and Wellness Expert coach and CEO of the Ur Caring Docs. I brought Dr. Beckford on today because she helps professional women put their health and wellness first without guilt. She talks the talk and walks the walk. She is the embodiment of what it takes to live a full live and enjoy it. It takes work. I wanted to know her secrets. We talk about so many things: How she decided to go into ER medicine (spoiler alert – she did NOT watch the ER show!) How she decided to be a nocturnist (someone who works nights only) What does she do during the day? Techniques she uses to wind down after her ER shift (spoiler alert – it has to do with murder mystery!) How she handles the stress/how she manages to stay calm during a shift. Here she provides perhaps the most beautiful explanation of why it is important to stay calm She tells me about her “wake up” routine (spoiler alert – it starts before she goes to bed after ER shift -she tosses her phone away) What she means when she says “I enter into my day, the day does not enter into me”. She does tell me her secret of staying calm and keeping the nervous system in parasympathetic mode after all – SELF CARE WITHOUT GUILT. It includes asking for help and receiving it. It includes understanding that in order for the wheels to spin, we have to be there – ergo, we have to take care of ourselves first. Reach out to your circle, community, ask for help. She can be found on www.urcaringdocs.com .

In this episode, we cover: Most people know what healthy eating is – so why is it so hard to implement? We need to go to the root issues of why we don't follow through Diets don't work – instead they lead to learned helplessness When you “fall off the wagon”, you need to train yourself to search for the wins Emotional eating has little to do with the actual food. Dr. Harris is joined by Dr. Tamara Beckford, an emergency medicine physician, and entrepreneur who sees a bright future for online medicine. Dr. Beckford has been taking care of "urgencies" in the ER that often could be addressed in the outpatient setting; however, our primary care physicians are overloaded and frequently overbooked. These urgencies go untreated and transform into emergencies that land people in the ER. Dr. Beckford asked herself if there was a better way, and if she could help. She harnessed the entrepreneurial spirit to create UR Caring Docs, a telemedicine platform to treat urgencies before becoming emergencies.
