Here is where we come to the inversion known as ex nihilo, which means, “out of nothing.” If you are like most modern people, Latin phrases may make you uncomfortable, which is why they are probably good for you. They can jostle us out of our spiritual slumber. But this is one that you should know about for mental health reasons. Prior to God, there is nothing. This was discussed briefly in the previous inversion, but it is so important that it requires an extended look. What does this mean? Consider a woodworker who wishes to build a birdhouse. To do so, he needs wood, nails, perhaps glue, a saw, a tape measure, and a few other things. To create, we need material that already exists. God, on the other hand, does not. He creates from nothing. The book of Genesis states that God is the beginning of all things. Nothing is before God, not even chaos. There is a reference to a watery, formless void in the verse that follows, but God is prior to this amorphous blob. Also, this “formless void” does not get a proper noun like the Greeks give to “Chaos,” as if it were an American Gladiator. The formless void is just a watery meh. It's nothing. But good luck thinking of “nothing” because we cannot with our finite abilities. Nothing is incomprehensible to us. Ghostbusters did a nice job of showing that we cannot think of “nothing.” The monster tells the Ghostbusters to “Choose the form of ‘The Destructor.'” Venkman then tells his buddies: “Empty your heads! Don't think of anything!” But poor Ray can't think of nothing. He can only think of something. That's when he thinks of the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man and says, “It just popped in there!” Then the Ghostbusters do battle with a giant marshmallow and make cinema history (and flatten spiritual things into the material realm, but I digress - that's for a later inversion). We cannot think of nothing. We can try to contemplate it, but we can't achieve it, because even if we believe we've found the nothing, we are either thinking of God or fooled, because nothing existed before God. He is first. The Buddhists aim their meditation at nothing and think of the self as god. Catholics do the opposite. Catholics focus prayer and meditation toward God, who created everything out of nothing, including us - and most importantly - perhaps the most critical thing of all to remember is this: we are not God. Repeat after me: “I am not God.” And this is why Buddhism and Christianity are incompatible at the very root; the first principles are in opposition. Buddhism rejects a creator and rejects creation ex nihilo. That's what this inversion is about, as are all the inversions. Not only does God's creation out of nothing disagree with Buddhist thought, but it also rejects Greek and Sumerian myth systems, as well as many modern pseudo-scientific theories where the universe was created from pre-existing parts. Today, some will claim that the atoms have always existed, but the Jew, Muslim, or Christian rebuts this by saying, “I know who made the atoms. They did not always exist.” In ancient times, if some would say that water was first, Abraham would say, “I know who made the water.” In the Sumerian creation mythology, water is first and the gods come later. It's not surprising that we might think of water, the sea, as a primordial source of life, since water supports life, but water alone cannot bring life. The substance of water can quench our thirst or destroy us with a flood. It is a healer and a destroyer. But water itself is not “Being”. Water cannot create life. Water cannot create planets. Water cannot create the protons and electrons is requires to be water. The old myths fail in light of modern science, but creation “out of nothing” does not. Ex nihilo outlasts even science, because God made all things that make science possible. He created science by creating. All of it depends on his being and his act of creation. A scientist has no paper to write without the atoms, just as a woodworker can build no house without the wood that God made. This idea of water is associated with Chaos in various myth models, and the modern arguments of “which came first” do not sound very different from the Sumerian and Greek disorder of where Being came from. Water is not Being, water is material. In other words, it is created by something prior to it. There is nothing before God in Genesis. Not water. Not time. Not a chaos monster. Not an island. Not a pie shop. Nothing. God is first. We cannot describe God, but we can know what he is not, and he is not merely water. To mention something as being prior to God is to misunderstand why God tells Moses his name is “I AM”. In other words, God is “Being Itself.” This first Being must precede everything, even chaos and formlessness. This is the road to mental health. Why modern psychiatry has not yet caught on to this is simultaneously sad and comical. Listening to the modern cures for mental health that exclude God is like watching a coach execute a play repeatedly that hits a brick wall of defensive lineman, when a simple bootleg would bring an easy touchdown. When Jesus says, “I am the way, the truth, and the life,” and when he says “I am the vine” and when he says “I am the bread of life,” he is saying, “I AM” just as God said to Moses at the burning bush. This “I AM” cannot be stressed enough, and if I fail in this series to fully hammer home the importance of understanding the first “Being” of God, then I too am like the quarterback running the failing dive play instead of the rollout bootleg for the touchdown. For this reason, I do believe Big Pharma fears a comeback of creation out of nothing, but really, I wish they would sell a sugar pill called “ex nihilo” and use their marketing prowess to sell it, because they truly would change people's lives with something better than the dubious SSRI pills they sell. But the more people I meet who believe in the idea of “ex nihilo” have astonishing sanity and positivity toward life. Please, if you're out there Pfizer, Merck, hear my plea: start selling ex nihilo, and make one of those ads where people are prancing about in clover fields, full of joy, but be sure to include a picture of them kneeling in humility before God, otherwise its just another snake oil. The same reason SSRIs fail to fix anything is the same reason that “whiskey ain't workin' anymore,” as the country singers say. Pills and booze are band-aids for a spiritual malady. The inversion of marketing with pills and booze is to pretend that something man-made can fill the void, the sense of nothing, when only one thing can do that, and it is God who created ex nihilo. The many forms of nihilism today extend directly from this rejection of God as the first being, because we often think that nothing existed before God. Modern philosophers and psychologists got stuck in neutral over this issue, with the big names all being atheists, like Heidegger and Sartre and Freud and Jung and Foucault. Is it any wonder that depression is at an all-time high, when the replacement for certainty in the rock of God is a watery void of endless therapy and “vibes”? Can anyone seriously struggle to understand why the “Self” is a crappy god to believe in, when one seasonal cold or inflamed elbow joint can render us weak? When we are unsure that God was first, and before him there was nothing, then we have a gap in our consciousness that nothing cannot fill. In particular, the Self cannot solve it, nor can serotonin. I call this giant, gaping void the “Big Empty” (shoutout to Stone Temple Pilots). And the Big Empty can only be filled by God. The inversion here is that God existed, has always existed, and will exist forever. Once again, the nature of time matters for sanity in knowing that there was a beginning, and being came from God, who preceded all things. That God created “out of nothing” means that you can stop worrying about everything, because quite literally “he has the whole world in his hands.” The children's song is not just a feel-good happy-clappy preschool ditty: it is the key to mental health - because God does indeed have the whole world, the wind and the rain, the little bitty baby, you and me brother/sister, and yes, even ev'rybody in his hands. Why? Because there was nothing before God, and so there is nothing without God. Thus, with God, who created all things, there is also nothing to fear, because he created all things and saw that it was good (more on that later). Because of this, even death is not something to fear, because he has the whole world in his hands. This is also important because when the devil tempts Jesus to make bread from stones, Jesus answers, “It is written, ‘One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.'” Thus the Word of God feeds us, because it is the source of everything, the pipeline that nourishes all life. The tree of life is rooted in God. The tree of knowledge leads to death. A simple lesson in making choices is to choose the tree of life over the tree of knowledge. Knowledge is a like side hobby, whereas the tree of life is where the joy of connection to the source never ceases. There is nothing before God speaks all into existence. This should comfort you. This should give you focus, not anxiety. We cannot actually think of “nothing” so the closest thing is a formless void. This language is stunningly complex while using simple words, but “beginning,” “created,” “without form and void” - if only I could write so concisely and meaningfully, but I can't. So let's continue with the long-form non-academic journal style that a hack writer like myself loves to use. One way I try, rather pathetically, to imagine the pre-creation nothing is a painter's easel with a blank canvas on it. The canvas can be black or white to represent the absence of anything. But even then I'm not thinking of nothing, I'm thinking of a canvas. Or, I'm thinking of a space like that whitespace in which Neo trains against Morpheus in the movie The Matrix. Yet that is also not nothing, it is a three-dimensional empty space, which is something. I can dimly understand what it means to say “out of nothing, God created the heavens and the earth.” Ex nihilo is a powerful idea that gets brushed aside too easily today by those who believe that atoms always existed, or that there never was a time when the universe did not exist. The bible says that God “created” the numbers, atoms, time, three-dimensional space, and every possible thing that we can think of (or not think of). He created the heavens and the earth, which means a material and spiritual realm, thus even that which we can imagine comes from God. Angels and Elves and Orcs and Fairies and Furies are attempts by us to think of something to explain the spiritual realms, the “heavens,” and as St. Paul said, we only look through a glass darkly now, but will someday see God face to face. But we aren't prepared to do that now, not in our mortal state. To do so in this finite form would destroy us (more on that inversion to come). As created things, as creatures, we can only think in terms of time and space, we cannot think of nothing, nor can we comprehend the infinite. This is why so many people err in an understanding of God in the bible because they think of him like an idol, as something that exists in space and time. God is not like Zeus who lives in a mountain. God made the mountain and everything else out of nothing. He is the Author of all things who lives outside of his work of art, called “Creation.” Famous atheists like Bertrand Russell swing and miss on this when they compare God to objects within the universe. Carl Sagan and Richard Dawkins make the same category error. God is outside of time and space, because he created time and space. Ideally, everyone would read the opening to the Catechism of the Catholic Church so we can get our terms straight, because like the word “Love” today, people mean very different things by it. We've flattened “Love” into one word when it can mean four different things - sex/passion, fraternal love, familial love, or agape (total self-giving). Few people say “Love” and clarify what kind. We do the same thing with God and “create.” We are speaking in babbling tongues to each other even when using the same language of English, hence the confusion. When we create, we use existing materials. When God created, he did not. He made the materials - including the materials that make us and allow us to create. He made the immaterial things, too. Stephen Hawking wrote a book called God Created the Integers. This is a terrific title. I almost tip over with joy, for Hawking is so close to faith in the source of Being, but he worshipped the nuts and bolts of the creation that he studied instead of the Creator. He was in hot pursuit of the truth, and was close, yet so far. In his quest for the holy grail of the origins of time and space, he was bringing the language of mathematics so near to theology that he almost wrote a love letter to God. Math is indeed one of the places where our finite minds can get close to this idea of ex nihilo. To say, “God created the integers” is to realize that when God first spoke, he did include the number “1” because before that there was zero - as in nothing. For God to create the number 1 is to create “out of nothing,” and without the number “1” there could never be such a thing as the number “2”, or “3”, or any number beyond. All numbers can only come from God who is infinite, and like the infinite, is comprehensible and incomprehensible at the same time. Physics is not even far back enough in the chain, because its laws could be different than they are. But math basics cannot be different. God could have made the gravitational constant different and thus changed the universe. But the integers cannot lie, nor can God. 2+2 must always be 4, and that applies to both God and humans. Mathematics is one path to God, oddly enough. Who would have thought the nerds in math league could be mystics? With mathematics, to contemplate the Integers as a creation of God is to get close to the concept of ex nihilo - creation “out of nothing.” For even the Integers did not exist before God made them. Stephen Hawking, even if he didn't believe, had so many gifts, that it always seems worth sending up a prayer for his soul (and for the many other seekers who never came home) just in case Purgatory is his residence. He appeared to pass away with the same rejection of Bertrand Russell on his lips, saying, “Not enough evidence, God, sorry.” Perhaps he sealed his eternity by the rejection of God, by dismissing the first commandment, but surely there is hope in his turning in the last hour, to confirm his belief in who “Created the Integers.” This is why the danger of knowledge can lead to pride over humility, and pride is the false guide of so many souls. St. Dismas and St. Gertrude: pray for Stephen Hawking, and pray for us all. In short, we are finite - we are in a box called the universe, or space-time. Yet there is a spiritual reality that we can feel, know, sense, and even reach somehow in prayer. Because we are creatures, no amount of LSD or marijuana will allow us to escape our state of being, even though we know there is another dimension, or perhaps more than one. Although trippy drug experiences may seem transcendent, it can never grasp what it means to be God. Worse, drug experiences are all about pulling God toward the self, and not the reception of God's grace. We cannot bootstrap our way to God, we have to be silent to let the still, small voice enter our ears. This is why prayer works, because when you pray, you need to stop trying and just be. Because what is “Being”? It is a connection to God. When Jesus said, “I am the vine and you are the branches,” he was telling us that “to be” is to connect to the source of all being. This is why Christians who are born again make no sense to unbelievers - they have a life in them that is inexplicable. In other creation stories, matter exists before creation, which seems odd until you hear modern people say that “the atoms have just always existed.” This is an echo of the Greek philosopher Democritus who felt that atoms and motion were eternal. Thus the writer of Genesis shouts, “No! Atoms did not exist before God. Before God was nothing, not atoms, not photons, not electrons, not strings, and not even the greatest invention of all, not even ice cream.” Again, we pass over this inversion with a yawn, despite the fact that like the first inversion, time, this inversion dumps a whole pantheon of gods and assumptions into the dumpster. Zeus? Get serious. Gaia? Take a number. All of the Canaanite, Egyptian, Greek, Sumerian, and Roman gods are booted out of the Biblical worldview. And I say good riddance, because it is much more fun to read Ovid as literature anyway. However, the ancient writers of Genesis did not have the luxury of looking at Moloch or Zeus as literary figures that explained phenomena in the world. No, this was a deadly bet in the declaration of the creation story, because the people of Abraham, Jacob, and Moses did not go with the flow when it came to creation. They did not believe in the maxim, “When in Rome, do as the Romans.” (I realize that's an anachronism). To say, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” is to elevate God, the one true God, over all the human-like gods of their surrounding peoples. To give an example of what this would be like today, consider how people react when someone takes a knee during the National Anthem during an NFL game. Or, you can test this today, simply by posting on social media: “Abortion kills a human life.” This upsets the worldview of others. Overzealous patriots worship the flag, and those who worship the self do not believe in the souls of certain people groups, especially the unborn. To speak of God as a reality today still invites anger. The twentieth century had more violence than any century in history and repeatedly the Jews and Catholics were killed for their association with belief in God. Right now in Nigeria or Nicaragua or Israel, your declaration of faith is a deadly statement. That is what Genesis is doing - it is giving a voice to that view, that opinion. It is inverting the idea of what God is. It is asserting a concept of God that makes all the king's horses and all the king's men look foolish for offering sacrifices up to absurd idols. Our current idols and religions are really not that different from Moloch or Zeus. What is most important in this inversion is that it tips over the canoe in which Zeus, Protagoras, and Richard Dawkins were all riding in, paddling backward in their fictions. Why is this inversion so powerful? This is a threatening implication because creation out of nothing kicks the stool out from faulty origin stories and causes them to tumble. Most myths, including ones from modern science, are attempts to invert the worldview of Moses, Elijah, and Jesus. They claim that water or atoms or a turtle was first. The Jewish and Christian origin story says that there was no-thing, not one thing, before Being Itself, and that Being is more commonly known as God. And how mighty a being he must be to craft such delights, like integers, atoms, time, gravity, the nuclear forces, light, water, earth, fire, wind, and (much later) pie shops - all out of nothing. That is a creator before whom we must kneel in awe and wonder and love and a healthy fear. Poets like William Blake understood this wonder. When he wrote about the fierce beauty of a tiger with its stripes, we can get a sense of the power, depth, and stunning awesomeness of God's ability to make things:Tyger Tyger, burning bright, In the forests of the night; What immortal hand or eye, Could frame thy fearful symmetry? He is asking: “Who or what could possibly create such a thing as a tiger?” The answer is God. Once this is understood, we can also begin to know why the Proverb says, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom.” For it is only infinite power and glory that can do such a thing as creation ex nihilo.Further reading: Isn't Creation Ex Nihilo Logically Impossible? The Case for Creation from NothingChurch fathers comments on ex nihilo This is a public episode. Who you gonna call when paranormal chaos once again descends upon New York City? Thanks to this 80s flick sequel, the answer remains the same—Ghostbusters! Taking place five years after the team's first victory over the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man and Gozer, the Ghostbusters have fallen out of business and out of favor with the city they fought so hard to protect. But when a malicious slime starts to cause chaos and empower the evil Vigo the Carpathian, the Ghostbusters are called out of retirement to save the day once again. So strap on your proton packs, call Janine and Lewis to babysit, and crank up the siren in Ecto-1 as Tim Williams, and guest co-host Laramy Wells from "Moving Panels" Podcast discuss “Ghostbusters 2” from 1989 on this episode of the 80s Flick Flashback Podcast. Here are some additional behind-the-scenes trivia we were unable to cover in this episode: When Peter arrives at Ray's Occult book-store, pretending to be a strange customer looking for a particular book, the gag was originally intended to be that Peter had previously made a prank phone call to Ray asking for the book, and Ray realizing it was Peter who made the call when he arrives at the store repeating the act. The prank call was not used in the final edit of the film, resulting in it seeming that Peter is just fooling around as he enters the shop. A key prop in Ghostbusters II is the portrait of Vigo, in which the spirit of the 16th century warlord resides. The original plan had been to use an actual oil painting, and an artist was commissioned to produce it. However, it was soon realised that this would look unconvincing when Vigo stepped out of the painting and into the real world. Instead, actor Wilhem von Homburg was photographed whilst in full costume as Vigo. This photograph was then blown up to full gallery portrait size, and put through filters to make it look as much like an oil painting as possible. By Editor-In-Chief, Concierge Medicine Today/Host, The DocPreneur Leadership Podcast I must have watched the 1984 cult classic movie, Ghostbusters a dozen or so times in my youth with my cousin in Canada on my Gramma's couch. It's definitely a movie that has some unforgettable one liners and come one, who doesn't smile when they remember Ray Stantz and the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man? I love it. I'm going to get a little geeky here for a minute so bear with me. There's a point. One of the more memorable lines we can all remember toward the end of the movie was "Don't cross the streams." It was phrase spoken by Egon Spengler in the movie once or twice and for the nerds out there it refers to the proton beams from multiple Particle Throwers crossing paths during use. Egon warns everyone to never "Cross the Streams." What would happen exactly? Well Egon said "It would be bad." In this podcast, we'll highlight some super simple ideas to get you started this week on the road to better customer service in your practice. Plot: After Columbia University parapsychology professors Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, and Egon Spengler experience their first encounter with a ghost at the New York Public Library, the university dean dismisses the credibility of their paranormal-focused research and fires them. The trio responds by establishing "Ghostbusters", a paranormal investigation and elimination service operating out of a disused firehouse. They develop high-tech nuclear-powered equipment to capture and contain ghosts, although business is initially slow. After a paranormal encounter in her apartment, cellist Dana Barrett calls the Ghostbusters. She recounts witnessing a demonic dog-like creature in her refrigerator utter a single word: "Zuul". Ray and Egon research Zuul and details of Dana's building while Peter inspects her apartment and unsuccessfully attempts to seduce her. The Ghostbusters are hired to remove a gluttonous ghost, Slimer, from the Sedgewick Hotel. Having failed to properly test their equipment, Egon warns the group that crossing the energy streams of their proton pack weapons could cause a catastrophic explosion. They capture the ghost and deposit it in an ecto-containment unit under the firehouse. Supernatural activity rapidly increases across the city and the Ghostbusters become famous; they hire a fourth member, Winston Zeddemore, to cope with the growing demand. Suspicious of the Ghostbusters, Environmental Protection Agency inspector Walter Peck asks to evaluate their equipment but Peter rebuffs him. Egon warns that the containment unit is nearing capacity and supernatural energy is surging across the city. Peter meets with Dana and informs her Zuul was a demigod worshipped as a servant to "Gozer the Gozerian", a shapeshifting god of destruction. Upon returning home, she is possessed by Zuul; a similar entity possesses her neighbor, Louis Tully. Peter arrives and finds the possessed Dana/Zuul claiming to be "the Gatekeeper". Louis is brought to Egon by police officers and claims he is "Vinz Clortho, the Keymaster". The Ghostbusters agree to keep the pair separated. Peck returns with law enforcement and city workers to have the Ghostbusters arrested and their containment unit deactivated, causing an explosion that releases the captured ghosts. Louis/Vinz escapes in the confusion and makes his way to the apartment building to join Dana/Zuul. In jail, Ray and Egon reveal Ivo Shandor, leader of a Gozer-worshipping cult, designed Dana's building to function as an antenna to attract and concentrate spiritual energy to summon Gozer and bring about the apocalypse. Faced with supernatural chaos across the city, the Ghostbusters convince the mayor to release them. The Ghostbusters travel to the apartment building roof as Dana/Zuul and Louis/Vinz open the gate between dimensions and transform into demonic dogs. Gozer appears as a woman and attacks the Ghostbusters then disappears when they attempt to retaliate. Her disembodied voice demands the Ghostbusters "choose the form of the destructor". Ray inadvertently recalls a beloved corporate mascot from his childhood, and Gozer reappears as a gigantic Stay Puft Marshmallow Man that begins destroying the city. Against his earlier advice, Egon instructs the team to cross their proton energy streams at the dimensional gate. The resulting explosion destroys Gozer's avatar, banishing it back to its dimension, and closes the gateway. The Ghostbusters rescue Dana and Louis from the wreckage and are welcomed on the street as heroes. TOP 5Before the Ghostbusters become established in New York City, they release a commercial to advertise their services. The three original members — Peter Venkman (Bill Murrey), Ray Stantz (Dan Aykroyd), and Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis) — appear on television, with the number 555-2368. During the film's theatrical release in 1984, Ivan Reritman ran that very same commercial, which allowed people to call in. Callers would hear a pre-recorded message from Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd, who announced that they were unable to answer as they were busy busting ghosts! The number received 1,000 calls every hour, 24 hours a day, for several weeks! Sadly, the line is no longer operational, so if you're being troubled by strange noises in the middle of the night, or you're experiencing feelings of dread in your basement or attic, we don't know what to tell you!“Ghostbusters” is such an iconic title — so much so, that many fans still haven't noticed that, following the opening scene in the New York Public Library in the original 1984 film, the title that appears on the screen is actually two words and not one, reading “Ghost Busters”! Before the filmmakers settled on the now iconic title, Dan Aykroyd originally considered the title “Ghost Smashers”, while “Ghostbreakers” was also an option. The sign outside the Ghostbusters fire station in New York even had variations of these titles during production. “Ghostbusters” wasn't available because of Filmation's Ghostbusters (1975), an unrelated TV series (there's also a 1986 cartoon). In the end, Columbia Pictures obtained the rights, while The Real Ghostbusters (1986 — 1991) was so named to distinguish it from the Filmation version.Despite becoming one of the most iconic characters in the entire Ghostbusters franchise, Slimer is never actually name-dropped in either of the two movies, Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II (1989). However, he was referred to as “Onionhead” by the crew of the original film. The “ugly little spud” wasn't actually named “Slimer” until the animated show, The Real Ghostbusters, in which he's part of the team. It's this that inspired his more friendly cameo in Ghostbusters II, in which he offers Louis Tully (Rick Moranis) a ride in a town car. Slimer isn't the only ghost in the original movie who isn't referred to by the name we now know him by Gozer's two minions, Vinz Clortho/the keymaster and Zuul/the gatekeeper are never referred to as "terror dogs", despite the hellhounds now being synonymous with the name.As well as being called “Onionhead” by the crew members of the original 1984 film, Slimer also went by another name — “The Ghost of John Belushi”, something Dan Aykroyd started. Aykroyd has since confirmed that Slimer was heavily inspired by the late John Belushi. For starters, the green spook's hankering for food was based on Belushi's cafeteria scene in National Lampoon's Animal House (1978). The role of Peter Venkman was originally written for the actor, however, he passed away while Aykroyd was working on the script in early 1984. While there are no direct references to the actor in the film, there are plenty throughout IDW's Ghostbusters comic book series, some of which even feature Belushi's character, “Joliet” Jake Blues, from The Blues Brothers (1980), which also stars Dan Aykroyd as Elwood Blues.Once the Ghostbusters cross the streams, the rift between the two dimensions causes the Marshmallow Man to explode, raining down marshmallow on the unsuspecting New Yorkers below. But getting that amount of actual marshmallows to dump on the film's extras was implausible. Instead, Edlund's team collected 500-gallon batches of shaving cream to substitute for the remnants of Mr. Stay-Puft. William Atherton, who played EPA villain Walter Peck, was skeptical about having such a large amount of heavy cream dropped on him, so they tested the idea on a stuntman using only 75 pounds, and it knocked him to the ground. The stuntman was okay, and another smaller batch was collected to dump on Atherton for the final take in the film. **TRIPLE LINDY AWARD** **REVIEW AND RATING**TreyChrisStephen .5Tucker .5 TOP 5Stephen:1 Breakfast club2 T23 Ghostbuster4 Sandlot5 Color out of space Chris:1. sandlots2. Wait for it. It is one of the greatest questions of the Bible..."What do you have that you did not receive?" If you get this right you are a long long way towards the right attitude and affections of Christianity. It asks us to consider, count and recall what we have: Stuff, nature, relationship with God, gifts, eternal security, friends, character, resources, abilities, fellowship, money, opportunities, spouse, job, children, positions, beauty and perhaps grandchildren.Great! Now step two: Lets consider their ultimate source. Where did this pile of favor come from? Who sourced all this. Finally, how do we respond? What room here do we have for the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man of pride? None. All this leads to awe and gratefulness. bewithme.us.

Delayed gratification, also referred to as deferred gratification, is often difficult because we're wired not just to seek pleasure but also to avoid pain. Two separate sections of your brain handle pleasure and pain, so this is where it can get challenging. Delayed gratification is challenging. But there are several benefits to not succumbing to an immediate reward. Better health, improved self-worth and overall long-term success with goal setting are just a few. The one question that has plagued humankind for far too long isn't "what is the meaning of life?" or "does anything really matter"...oh no...it's simply "is the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man a kaiju?". Our hosts attempt to answer that very question - but first, they must lay some groundwork on how they define "kaiju" and how do those rules apply to not just Stay Puft but also creatures such as Mighty Joe Young, the graboids from Tremors, Alien Baltan, werewolves, rampaging dinosaurs that have survived to live in our time, and many more! It's about as nerdy of a conversation as you're going to find - and who better to discuss it than the "Tattooed Titan of Tokusatsu" and Ghostbusters expert Jacob Walsh and the "Mayor of Toku Toy Town" Jay Key? In addition to the big question at hand, the duo review recent toy news - ranging from XM Studios jaw-dropping Shin Godzilla and GMKGoji busts to Medicom announcing a Kilaaks set for an upcoming lottery to Tako Kong - and their recent pick-ups. It's a wild ride so make sure you soma berry cocktails are refreshed and enjoy YHS on Monster Island!

(STINGER: ROH) Uncertainty surrounds the future of Ring Of Honor. On Wednesday, ROH announced that it will go on hiatus following the Final Battle pay per view on December 11th. ROH released a statement saying it needs to “make changes” to its business operations...and “will be taking the first quarter of 2022 to work internally to reimagine ROH.” ROH said it anticipates “returning to live events in April 2022”. The Wrestling Observer, Fightful and other outlets are reporting that ALL talent are being released from their contracts. Wrestlers currently on the ROH roster are already making themselves available for bookings. ROH World Champion Bandido quickly announced three dates for GCW in December. ROH also announced Wednesday that “technical difficulties” will mean this weekend's ROH TV will be a rerun of a past episode featuring classic matches of Jay Lethal. The special Halloween episode of ROH TV that was being promoted will premiere on ROH's YouTube on October 31st at 7PM Eastern. (STINGER: AEW) THREE new matches are now announced for AEW's Full Gear pay per view. The Lucha Brothers will defend the AEW Tag Titles against FTR. The Inner Circle and American Top Team will meet in a Minneapolis Street Fight. The Inner Circle will get to choose which members of American Top Team they'll face...thanks to TNT Champion Sammy Guevara beating Ethan Page on last night's Dynamite. Also added to Full Gear, MJF vs. Darby Allin. Allin returned to AEW TV on last night's Dynamite. MJF escaped the ambush, but Wardlow took a shot to the back from Allin's thumbtack skateboard. Also last night, Hikaru Shida got some revenge, her 50th win in AEW...and advanced in the TBS Championship tournament by beating Serena Deeb. But Deeb used a steel chair to attack Shida's knee after the match. Jon Moxley made quick work of Dark Order's 10 to advance in the World Title Eliminator Tournament. Dark Order's Evil Uno, Stu Grayson, John Silver, and Colt Cabana beat The Elite's Kenny Omega, Adam Cole and the Young Bucks. Halloween costumes were worn by all the compatents. The Elite were dressed as the Ghostbusters...with someone dressed up as the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. You'd think it was one of The Elite's lackeys - but NO! He revealed himself to be Hangman Page...and not long after that...John Silver pinned Matt Jackson for the win. CM Punk pinned Bobby Fish with the Go 2 Sleep. Cody Rhodes was confronted during an in-ring segment by Andrade El Idolo...and Malakai Black. Pac showed up to even the odds. A match announced for Friday's Rampage: Dante Martin & Lio Rush vs. the Sydal Brothers...will now be just Dante Martin vs. Matt Sydal. The explanation for the change is that Mike Sydal is injured. (STINGER: Impact) Tonight's Impact Wrestling has an X-Division Title match: Trey Miguel defending against Rocky Romero. What's made with sugar, gelatin, water, air, is 100 feet tall, and debuted in the 1984 movie Ghostbusters? That's right. It's the the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man of course! Today, I challenged myself to think of the silliest thing I could think of so you would remember this episode. And just like Ray (played by Dan Aykroyd) in Ghostbusters, the first thing that popped into my head was the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. No joke. In this episode, I challenge you to choose happiness over pain, hurt, and disappointment by thinking of the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. He can't hurt you and neither can the challenges in your life. So, let's start roasting marshmallows by an open fire and have a great time. See you inside.

Alex: And on The Stack, we talk about a bunch of books that have come out this week, or do we? Or do we? Justin: Way to create some intrigue. That's right. Alex: Because the first book that we're going to talk about is a book that doesn't come out until next week, but we're going to do a spoiler-free review of it. It is- Justin: A preview review. Alex: Preview review. It is Berserker #1 from BOOM! Studios, written by none other than Keanu Reeves and Matt Kindt, illustrated by Ron Garney. Pete: Oh, no wonder. Justin: I've been following Keanu Reeves's comic book work for a long time, and it's great to see just a brand-new book with his name on it. Alex: Yeah. It was great. Pete: That was driving me fucking crazy. I did not notice that he wrote this. Alex: Wait. Really? Pete: That's hilarious. Yeah. I was like- Alex: You were like “Oh, it looks like Keanu Reeves in this book?” Pete: … “Why does the guy look so much like fucking Keanu Reeves?” Oh, that's hilarious. Alex: Well, I mean, I got to say, I mean, who knows how much he was sitting down at his typewriter being like “Scene one. Berserker. Open on me”? But a lot of times, I feel like there are these insert-style comics that just don't work. They're star vehicles. They're trying to set up a movie, and they just … They're not comics. They're pitch sheets, and that's pretty much it. That's not what this is at all. Not only do you have Ron Garney's phenomenal art throughout- Pete: Yeah. Justin: I love Ron Garney, and I feel like he hasn't been doing enough stuff lately. So it's great to see his work here. Alex: So that's great, but also you got Matt Kindt, who knows his way around an intrigue storyline, a sci-fi storyline. Again, we're going to skirt spoilers but not get into any here. But even though the main character is clearly Keanu Reeves, this is a really interesting sci-fi story. It's a great action story. A lot of times, they just step back and let Ron Garney do his thing. I was very surprised and very impressed by this book. Justin: Yeah. It's one of those books that when you're reading the first bit of it, it's like “I see what this is,” and then by the end you're like “I was completely wrong. It's totally different, and I am excited by where it landed.” Alex: Pete? Pete: Yeah. I mean, I've been reminded numerous times not to give away anything, but man, that ending. Am I right? Oh, shit. No, but yeah. The art and action is phenomenal. This is definitely in my wheelhouse, less dialogue, more action. Come on. Alex: It's really good stuff. I mean, this is already a huge selling comic book. I think they sold 600,000 copies, making it the best-selling original property comic book in like five years or a decade or something like that. I'm forgetting what the exact stat is. Pete: Wait. It hasn't come out yet. What are you even talking about? Alex: Well, the way comics book work, Pete, is that people pre-order them through their comic book shops in order to guarantee that they're going to be there. So that's what they've been doing. So they sold that many copies to comic book shops. So obviously, big deal. People are really excited. The thing that I think is not a happy accident, but happy surprise about it, is that they're going to get what they paid for. They're going to get a good, very cool comic book. So I'm excited for everybody to check it out when it hits stands next week. Justin: Exactly. Next week. If you love The Lake House, you're going to love Berserker. Alex: I'm sending that directly to BOOM! Studios. That's their pull quote. Justin: Two great Keanu [crosstalk 00:03:36]. Pete: I don't know if I've seen that, but okay. Justin: It's not a spoiler when I say the mail is in the mailbox with this comic. Alex: Hold on. Hold on. Let me try this. Pete: Oh, my god. Alex: If you love Always Be My Maybe, check out Berserker #1 from BOOM! Studios. Pete: Wow. Wow. Justin: The comic book club bump is coming for Berserker right now. Alex: Has he done any other movies, Keanu Reeves? Justin: Keanu Reeves? I can't think of any. Pete: A ton. A ton of movies. Justin: Well, there was Bill and Ted's Excellent Lake House. Pete: Right. Alex: Bill and Ted's Excellent Always Be My Maybe. Justin: Yep. There's that. I think that's the whole thing. Alex: I think that's it. Anyway, this book is great. Definitely pick it up if you haven't, or pre-order it if you haven't already. Next up, here's a book that's actually out this week, Stray Dogs #1 from Image Comics, written by Tony Fleecs, art by Trish Forstner. So this is about, as you can tell from the title, it's not like stray … I honestly thought, because it was an Image book and it was called Stray Dogs, and it's like “What's up? We're a bunch of criminals called the Stray Dogs.” No. It's literally stray dogs. There's still a crime element. There's still a mystery element, but I was surprised about this. I'm curious to hear what Pete thought in particular. Justin: Yes. Pete: All right. So first- Justin: Because he's a cat guy. He's a cat guy. So- Pete: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Thank you. But I saw that cover, and I was like “Oh, this is going to fucking break my heart,” and it did. It's got some feels in this thing, and I was really impressed with the story. I thought maybe it was just going to be cute dogs, which would have been fine, but yeah. I thought it really ended well. It sets up this whole arc. I'm impressed with this, and I can't wait for more. I'm really on board here. Justin: This book also surprised me, and I did … The last third of it is so good. They assemble like an Avengers: Endgame level group of mid-period Disney dogs here. This is like your Fox and the Hounds, your 101 Dalmatians, your Lady and the Tramps. They're all here, and I don't think we want to spoil it, maybe, but I think there's going to be some bad dogs in here. There's going to be some good girls and some bad dogs. Pete: Oh, my god. Love it. Alex: Yeah. Good stuff. Again, a nice surprise. Let's move on with our next book, and I'm going to tell you what it is, and then I'm going to give you a little peek behind the curtain here. Okay? So our next book, before the shouting begins, is The Amazing Spider-Man #60. Pete: Oh, fuck you. Justin: Oh, no. Alex: Hold up. Written by Nick Spencer, pencils by Mark Bagley. Now, we've been talking a lot about Amazing Spider-Man, the Last Remains storyline, this whole thing about Kindred, this villain that turns out to be Harry Osborn, who's been [inaudible 00:06:18] Spider-Man in the background. Pete: But- Alex: Hold on. Let me just finish what I'm saying, and then I'm going to allow you to shout, Pete. But I think we kind of agreed that it sort of started to fizzle at a certain point. They're dragging out the Kindred reveal for too long. I've still been reading it. I've been reading each issue because I like Spider-Man and I enjoy reading it, but I haven't felt like … We don't need to talk about the same story [inaudible 00:06:43] again and again. So before I set down the stack for this week with the choices of issues, particularly Marvel, I was like “Well, let me just read and see what happens in Spider-Man,” because the cover of this is Mary Jane and Peter surrounded by the centipedes from Kindred, and I read this book, and I was like “Oh, we got to talk about this.” Justin: Yes. Alex: We have to talk about this, because I want to hear Pete shout. Go ahead, Pete. Pete: Okay. So first off, to kind of peek behind the curtain a little bit, Zalben has been pushing the envelope for how many fucking comics we talk about, and he sends out this ridiculous list that we have to read all these comics. Alex: Nobody is forcing you to do that. Pete: Hey. I love reading comics, but I got a full-time job. We got other stuff going on, and he keeps pushing the number. He said “Oh, we'll cap it at 20.” Alex: I never said that. Pete: Hasn't been capped at 20 in a long time. Alex: I never said that. Pete: So then he gives us this giant fucking list, and then goes “Oh, two more,” and guess what one of the fucking two is. Amazing Spider-Man, and I was like “You motherfucker. Always pushing.” Justin: This is not the shout I expected to hear, just FYI. Alex: Not at all. Justin: Imagine tiny- Alex: [crosstalk 00:07:50]. Justin: Imagine- Pete: I was saying that “Oh, there has to be a reason he pushed this,” like “Oh, just these two Marvel. No big deal. We're just going to just do two Marvel because we got so many other comics,” and I knew. I knew Spider-Man had to be a fucking doozy. Otherwise, he wouldn't have fucking pushed it through, and yeah, and here we go again. Here we fucking go again. You want to open a fucking wound and fucking relive some nightmares? Well, guess what. We got fucking Mephisto, and it's going to fucking relive some god damn nightmares. Justin: Here's the thing though, Pete. First off, let me say, imagine little Pete LePage, Petey, as we call him- Pete: No. Justin: … dreaming of his future as an adult, and your biggest complaint right now is that your friend is making you read too many comics? Little Petey LePage would drive his little big wheel right into a brick wall if he heard that. Alex: “You're telling me this is my job?” I mean, well, let's not go that far. Justin: Well, not technically a job, but it's like- Pete: You get paid to do a job, asshole. All right? Alex: That's what I'm saying. Pete: We're not … Yeah. So I do have a job where I work and get paid, and then we go this out of the love of our hearts, and then one person keeps fucking pushing the envelope by overloading us. Justin: I love comics. I would read more. Give me more. Alex: I agree, and to clarify, we said we would cap it at 50 to 75 books a week, tops. Justin: Let's talk about this Spider-Man book, because let me see- Alex: No. I don't think so. Can you also give us a peek behind the curtain, Justin? Justin: Yeah. Pete: Yeah. Give us a peek behind the curtain, Justin. Justin: Sorry. The only curtain I'm behind is a shower curtain, and it's sheer. It's invisible. I'm nude in front of you all, all the time. I'm [crosstalk 00:09:33]. Pete: Gross. Justin: Just a little imagery to preface this review. So this book though, Pete … It's got Peter and Mary Jane being as close as they've been in a decade. Pete: Yeah, and then it does the classic bullshit where Peter leaves and then Mary Jane's got some weird shit going on with the villain. Justin: Well, here's the thing. To your point, Alex, I actually didn't really like a lot of the lead up to the reveals here. I feel like Nick Spencer used to have a really good Spider-Man and a really good Peter Parker. It felt like it was back to the very core of the character, struggling to get by, has a bunch of roommates that he shouldn't be hanging out with, messing up all the time, and now it's like it's so sentimental. It's this sort of sanctimonious Peter Parker that we see a lot over the course of the years, but it's not the fun Peter Parker, and it's too melodramatic for me, and then by the end of it, I was excited about the reveal at the end of the book and even the stuff that Pete's talking about with the villain. At least that's interesting, because this Peter Parker's not a person I'm loving right now. Alex: Well, and that's the point of the book, right? I think they're taking a really long time to get around to it, but what is nice about this issue is it feels like one of those classic Ultimate Spider-Man issues that Brian Michael Bendis would do, where it's just a conversation, and in this case, it's Peter talking to Mary Jane. She's trying to help him through the stuff he's going through, and he says exactly what you're talking about, where he's like “Why is my life like this? Why am I still in this place that I'm in? What is going on here?” and by the end … Spoiler, but we've already spoiled it. The revelation is it's probably Mephisto all over again fucking with Peter Parker's life. Probably, there's no way around. If they don't loop back to One More Day at this point, I don't know what he's doing in this storyline, but that's fascinating to me, what direction they're going in. It's nerveracking, but it's fascinating. Pete: Yeah. Well, I'm not fascinated, but I did really like the part of MJ talking about this exercise that helps you kind of work through shit, and I thought that was very cool to have a superhero kind of do a therapy exercise and be like “Hey. Therapy's okay. It's okay to talk about your feelings in a safe space and get it out and see what it feels like to say these things out loud.” I thought that was very powerful and very cool, but then you got to fucking ruin it with Mephisto shit, and it's like, either we're moving on and that bullshit happened and somehow we have to live with it and move forward, or you better fucking undo that bullshit and then we can get back to our lives. Fucking make a choice, man, because I'm sick of this shit. Alex: All right. Well, let's move on to Two Moons #1 from Image Comics, written by John Arcudi, art by Valerio Giangiordano. This is set in the Civil War following a soldier who starts seeing some demons or something. We're not 100 percent sure what's going on, but the art in here is terrifying and scary. Pete: He sees the monster from Critters is what it looks like. Alex: But it's just somebody's head, to be clear. Justin: Yeah. He's got a critter on his head. Pete: Yeah. It's a critter head. Alex: Classic critter head. Yeah. Yeah. Justin: You guys both sort of felt like you were saying something that you shouldn't be saying, for a second. Alex: I mean, in my family, when I grew up, we were never supposed to say critter head. Justin: Yeah. Say it three times, and then you have yourself a critter head. I like this book as well. This was a good sort of scary story in a time we don't see very much, especially from this perspective. Pete: Yeah. I mean, the art's really unbelievable. This is a very interesting story. It's also the take about the nurse getting upset about the fact that when you run out of ammunition, they'll use whatever scraps of metals they can, and then kind of her reaction is very interesting and very intense. So I think this is a really kind of interesting, original idea set in a shitty time period. Alex: Sure. There you go. Couldn't disagree with that. Let's move on to our Future State block, as we've been doing all the past couple of weeks, talking about everything that's come out from Future State. I'll list the books, and then we'll talk about some of our highlights. We've got House of El #1, Aquaman #2, Legion of Superheroes #2, Superman vs. Imperious Lex #2, Suicide Squad #2, Dark Detective #4, and Batman/Superman #2, and to give you a little peek behind the curtain here, it's interesting that Pete was complaining about too many titles being in our stack, because at least the past two weeks we've talked about the Future State block, Pete has read extra titles from DC and then talked about them on the show. Justin: Yeah, and dropped them in. Alex: There you go. So Pete, any extra titles you want to talk about here? Pete: No. No, but if we would like to peek behind the curtain, I think you're a piece of shit. Alex: All right. That's fine. Justin: Again, here's me, nude behind a very crystal-clear sheer curtain. Alex: Pete, what jumped out at you? What did you like this week? Pete: All right. Well, I liked a lot of things, but the one book I didn't want to like, but then the sappy ending kind of got me in the feels, was the House of El #1. Sometimes we get in the house of stuff. I don't know. Justin: Yeah. You don't like houses. Pete: Yeah. I don't like houses. I don't like the kind of historical Superman shit where everybody is talking about their logos and all the weird shit. It doesn't get me excited, but I was really impressed with this book because I read it like “Harumph. I don't want to like you,” and then it won me over. I would say one of my favorites was Batman/Superman- Justin: Here. Wait. Can we talk about that real quick? Pete: Sure. Sure. Justin: Sorry. Sorry, but I loved this book. I know I feel like I've been on a Phillip Kennedy Johnson love fest, but man, this is another great book by him that is just a hundred percent fun. It's mixing a lot of the stuff he does in The Last God with a Superman-focused version of the Legion, and it reads like just a great Legion book with all these different version of Superman kin that are out there trying to just save the world and maintain their household and mix in with these sort of light fantasy elements. It's just a great book. Alex: Pete, what about you? You were about to call out Dark Detective, I believe. Pete: Well, I have been enjoying that, and yes, I did love Dark Detective #4. Very intense. I love this no more shadows, like “Oh, shit. What does that mean?” Also, great backup story. I thought this was a very intense, cool Batman book. I'm very excited to see where this goes. Anybody else want to jump in on this one? Alex: Yeah. Sure. Was that not the one you were going to call out? I thought that's what you started saying. Pete: No. It was Batman/Superman #2. Alex: Oh, okay. Sorry to put you on the spot there, but I do really like the backup. We talked about this last time, this Joshua Williamson and Giannis Milonogiannis, and they're doing basically Red Hood, but Akira, and it's super fun. I had a blast reading that. But you want to talk about Future State Batman/Superman #2? Justin: Real quick. Alex: Oh, yeah. Justin: It's very funny seeing the Red Hood hood on him, where it just goes right to the … It's just such a weird looking thing, but this has been one of the best version of Bruce Wayne that I feel like we've seen in Batman comics in a long time, this Dark Detective series. Pete: Yeah. Yeah. It's really cool. But Batman/Superman #2, really unbelievable action. I really am loving the kind of mystery and the kind of who-done-it with this team up. I love it when Batman and Superman get along, but I also like it when they fight, and I feel like this was a really cool, great kind of fight between Superman and Batman, and I thought this was really cool. Alex: Yeah. It's a good book as well. For me, man, it's tough. Again, a very good week for books from Future State. All of this stuff has been really good. It's a little bit of a tie. There's one that eked it out a little bit more. Future State Superman vs. Imperious Lex #2 is kind of my number two here, written by Mark Russell, art by Steve Pugh. Super fun. Great Lois Lane in this book. As usual, just hilarious and pointed satire from Mark Russell. So really enjoyed that book, but the one for me that killed it was Aquaman #2. Justin: A hundred percent. That was mine. Pete: Yeah. That's what I was going to … Yeah. Alex: Everybody was leading up to that, written by Brandon Thomas, art by Daniel Sampere. Again, like I said with the first issue, I am not an Aquaman fan. I don't usually like an Aquaman story. This is god damn amazing, and if you didn't tune in to the first book, the first issue of the book, it was all about this confluence of oceans from the universe that former Aqualad, now Aquaman, and Aqualass, who by the end of the book, spoiler, is Aquawoman, have gotten trapped in. They get separated. Aquaman is imprisoned most of the last book and then finally finds out that Aqualass is alive at the end, and then we loop back and find out what happened with her. The action is so big. Everything that happens is so emotional and creative. I was blown away. Justin: I agree. This book was so good. Of all the books in Future State that I would want to replace the main title going forward, it's this. I want to see these characters going forward and seeing where they go next, because it's so good. Pete: The let go moment was so nice. Justin: Yeah. Pete: Yeah. I mean, I don't know how cool a water leg would be, but man, they really sold it in this book. Alex: It's a fish leg. It's not a water leg. It's a fish leg. Pete: Oh, okay. My bad. Justin: I mean, a fish leg would be much worse, because that shit … You've only got like two days max on that things. Pete: Before it starts smelling? Alex: Yeah. Justin: Yeah. Alex: Don't microwave it. Not in the office. That's all I'm saying. Justin: Oh, definitely. Alex: That would be gross. Justin: [crosstalk 00:19:49] case of scallop- Alex: All right. Let's move on and talk about some other books. Justin: One last thing I want to shout out. Alex: Oh, yeah. Please. Justin: We didn't talk about Legion of Superheroes #2. Want to shout out Riley Rossmo's art on this. I'd love to see a Legion book with Riley drawing it. Alex: Absolutely. Moving on, one of your favorites, Justin, The Department of Truth #6 from Image Comics, written by James Tynion IV, art by Elsa Charretier. Justin: Oh, what an accent. Alex: This is a switch up of artists for the book- Pete: Yeah. I was going to say. Alex: … and also a switch up of time periods, as we jump back in time and find out the origins of The Department of Truth. This is a awesome issue that continues, personally, to remind me of a vintage Vertigo book, where it'd be like five issues, take a break, show us some times passed thing, and then go forward with the ongoing story. So good. Justin: So good. This book is doing just such a great job of fleshing out the world of the series sort of slowly and really easing into it, and this book does a great job of sort of bringing into focus in the sort of micro with the flashback story. It's sort of a double flashback. We flashback to right after the Kennedy assassination, and then flashback to Doubting Thomas and sort of the origin of rewriting the world with a new truth, and this book is one of my favorites on the stand right now. If this were a religion, I would believe in it. Alex: Wow. Pete: Oh, shit. Wow. Justin: I'm not a religious guy, but this is the closest. I'm like “I could buy this. I could buy this fully across the board.” Pete: Wow. That is crazy. I think it's really impressive that this book can look so different from kind of book to book and still feel like a part of the same story. It's really impressive what they're pulling off here creatively, artistically. They're taking some big swings at some big ideas, and they are killing it. It's really impressive. Yeah. The paneling, the art, the way this story flows. This is a really, really impressive book that is tripping me the fuck out. Alex: This employs a technique that I usually hate in storytelling, but it completely works here, where they have a story in a story in a story. In this book, Lee Harvey Oswald, who in our current time is the head of The Department of Truth goes to his first day there, finds out the origin, so you have one … I think this is the reason it works is the art style changes with each level of the story, where it goes back in time, he's reading the origin of the story of The Department of Truth, and then one of the characters in the story starts telling the story to the other character, and then the art style changes again. It's just these multiple layers that feel very purposeful versus the usual accidental employment of that technique. Fantastic book. Definitely pick it up. Alex: Let's move on and talk about Faith #1 from BOOM! Studios, written by Jeremy Lambert, illustrated by Eleonora Carlini. This is a weird book that I was no expecting- Justin: This is a weird book. Alex: … that follows Faith as she's trapped in a movie theater, and there's some Watchers watching her, strange stuff going on. What'd you guys think of this one? Pete: Yeah. It's fantastic art. It was a little confusing because we kind of had this shadowy figure behind the main character. So I was having a hard time follow what's happening, because I was so worried about her present, in-the-movie-theater self. So it was hard to kind of let go of that and follow the story, but yeah. This is interesting. Unbelievable art. Some great action. I'm not quite sure what's happening though. Justin: Yeah. I mean, I agree. Really expressive art, I thought was … There were so many good little horror moments, and Faith's reactions throughout are great. I don't know much about Faith in the background. I don't have faith. Alex: You got to have faith. Justin: Yeah. That's the thing. Pete: The faith, the faith, the faith. Justin: But I believe in the comic book we just talked about before this one. So yeah. I didn't know much about the character, but it was a good read. Alex: Yeah. Moving on, X-Men #18 from Marvel, written by Johnathan Hickman, art by Mahmud Asrar. Give you a little peek behind the curtain. I felt like Pete would be pretty mad about Amazing Spider-Man. This one involves Laura, Wolverine, which Pete likes a lot. So I thought this would be kind of like a gimme, like balance the scales a little bit. So this is as three of the X-Men characters wander into a weird future place, as they usually do in this run of X-Men. What'd you think about this one? Justin: The Vault. Pete: Well, I'm curious about something. So why is she called Wolverine now? You know what I mean? I know Wolverine died for a little bit, and I know she was X-23, and that's cool, but then when they were referring to her as Wolverine, I was like “Why? What's-“ Justin: Well, because Wolverine doesn't … He's on the moon popping something else besides claws. So he's not really … Pete: You don't have to be an asshole when I ask a question. You could just answer it. Justin: I mean, I think there's some truth to that. Alex: There's more than on person named Pete. Justin: Wow. Pete: Yeah. Yeah. Justin: That's true. Pete: Got that, and there's also more than one person named Pete LePage, but what's your fucking point? Alex: My point is, when I search for Pete LePage, the other one comes up. Pete: Okay. So it's okay that she's called Wolverine is what you're saying? Alex: Yeah. It's fine. It's not a problem. Justin: I like it. I like her as a character. I like her as the Wolverine. I think Logan can just be Logan now, and he can go do all of his Logan stuff. Pete: That's cool. I just didn't know. I was like “Maybe I missed something,” like the passing of the Wolverine mantle or whatever. I love X-23. I have no problem with her being Wolverine. I was just like “Oh, they're straight just calling her Wolverine now.” Justin: Well, I think they're both called Wolverine. I think it's just like they're both Wolverines. There's no reason to differentiate. Pete: Then I was like “Is Wolverine a title of the fucking muscle when you going on …” I don't know. I was just wondering if maybe I'd missed something that you guys knew about, but usually, as usual, I ask you something and you just make fun of me. So all right. Alex: Oh, Pete. Justin: I'm not making fun of you. We're explaining an important plot point in the X-Men universe right now that Wolverine fucks in the moon. Pete: Cool. Cool. Alex: It did stand out to me too, to be totally- Justin: The gravity's only one-sixth. So he's floating a little bit. You know what I'm talking about? Alex: To be totally fair, it stood out to me too as son as they called her Wolverine, and then I was like “All right. They're calling her Wolverine,” and I kind of moved on from there rather than sticking with it. This is a good story. It's crazy that they introduce this whole villain team to eliminate them in one issue, but that's classic Johnathan Hickman at this point. Justin: Well, these guys have been around. The Vault was introduced a while ago. In fact, I feel like Hickman is oddly … He keeps sort of edging on the Vault. He's like “Look. The Vault. Watch out for them,” and then in this issue, they go in there and wreck shit. So it's weird what's happening here. I thought this issue was great. This issue reads like an annual standalone issue where they're just like “Let's have a fun mission,” and it's a great tactical mission. I love Darwin and Synch. Great. It's all so smartly done, but I think, in general, I'm like “What's the next move here with the X-Men?” and there are no clues. It's hard to read the tea leaves. Alex: No. It's definitely the sort of thing that I think we're going to look back at it in 15 to 30 years when Johnathan Hickman is done with this run and be like “Okay.” Pete: Yeah. “Oh.” Alex: “I get it it.” Pete: “I see now.” Yeah. Yeah, but- Justin: “Oh, The Vault.” Pete: The art's amazing, and the kind of thinking-man Sentinel thing was really awesome to kind of see as well. Yeah. I think it was really cool to kind of like “Oh, we're going to send you on this mission. You guys sweep the Vault,” and you're like “Okay. No big deal. How long will that take?” and then they realize a Vault is a whole fucking city. Pretty cool kind of “How are we going to do this?” moment. I don't know how any of this makes sense, but I thought it was a cool issue. Alex: I agree. I'm glad to hear that too, Pete, because you've been very down on the X-Men. Let's move on and talk about another James Tynion book, Something is Killing the Children #15 from BOOM! Studios, written by James Tynion IV, art by Werther Dell'Edera. Justin, I'm curious to hear from you because this is the end of the story that they've been telling for 15 issues at this point. They wrap things up. They leave things open for the next story, but that's kind of where we are, and you've been very back and forth about it. So how do you feel about this as a whole? Justin: James Tynion's a great storyteller, but I guess I still have the same feeling where I'm like “Oh, that was the whole story.” I thought there was going to be, I guess, more of a crescendo in here. I like all of the storytelling. The art in this book is fantastic. The eating of gummy worms has never been so gross. Pete: Oh, man. Yeah. Alex: Maybe you want some gummy worms, I'll tell you what. Pete: Yeah. You're so creepy, dude. Justin: Yeah, but you see regular worms, you're like “Yum, yum, gummy.” Alex: Put those in my mouth. Give me some of those sweet dirt dudes. That's what I call them. Justin: But yeah. That's my- Pete: I don't know. This felt like a ending that wasn't an ending. It felt like an ending that's like there is a bigger story to tell here- Justin: For sure. Pete: … and hopefully they will get to tell it, because this is a really great world. I've loved every single issue of this. Art's unbelievable. Love the character designs, and this cool … I feel like this is what our life is going to be like eventually. Since we're all going to be wearing masks, it's going to be just down to what does your mask say, and that's your gang affiliation or your kind of tribe, if you will. So I feel like this is a book of the future before we even know it. Alex: It's surprising to me because a lot of this specific issue was them talking about houses, which you've already got on record as not liking in this very podcast. Justin: Yeah. This guy hates houses. You want to see the apartment of El, the condo of El. Pete: Yeah. Alex: Nailbiter Returns #10 from Image Comics, written by Joshua Williamson, art by Mike Henderson, another surprising ending for a series here as we wrap up Nailbiter returning with some big revelations for the series. How'd you feel about this one? Pete: I loved it. I thought this was a cool kind of end but also tease to the to-be-continued thing at the end. That was pretty neat, but I mean, you guys have kids. So you tell me. When you guys sit around the fire to tell stories, do their faces go blank like that? Is that a normal thing that happens? Justin: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Pete: Oh, man. That's got to be tough. Alex: Every parent knows that. When you're about to have the kid in the hospital, they talk you through the birthing process. They also talk you through the fact that, hey, when you sit around a fire, kids are going to have no faces. Pete: Oh, wow. Well, I'm glad that you had the heads up on that, because as somebody who didn't know that, that was pretty scary. Justin: Well, that's because they're listening so hard, and so the rest of their features just fade away because the ears are really the focus. It's just using your resources. Alex: This book was fun. I had a blast reading it. It's definitely a big action movie versus the overall dark mystery that the first one was. Super fun, and I'm glad that they kept it to 10 issues and pretty much done, kept the story really focused. I had a good time. Pete: Yeah. Justin: I agree, and it really got into some dream logic dreaminess that I really appreciated throughout this whole series and in this issue as well. Pete: Also, it's great for people who collect eyeballs, you know? Alex: Mm-hmm (affirmative). Justin: Yes, which I think we all do, and great nail biting. We got some biting of nails. Alex: Good stuff. Pete: Finally got some nail biting in this one. Yeah. Alex: Next up, Firefly #26 from BOOM! Studios, written by Greg Pak, art by Pius Bak. The last issue we called a fresh new start for Firefly. It was taking us after Serenity, the movie, moving us forward here. The cliffhanger at the end of the last issue was it looked like Wash was alive. Here, spoiler, not exactly. There's a good twist on it. I loved the twist with Wash, actually, and I think this is a great … Without spoiling exactly what happens, this is a great way of pushing the story forward, and it feels like a tried-and-true sci-fi idea that's going to pay really good dividends with the characters. I think it's neat. Justin: It's so- Pete: I'm going to go out … Oh, go ahead. Justin: You go. Pete: I was just going to say I'm going to out on a limb and just say Greg Pak is a fucking phenomenal writer. He makes great choices. I've just not yet read something from him and not been impressed by it. Even though we knew what kind of happened, the whole thing needed to be explained to us. I was really impressed. I thought this was a fun book. Amazing art. Really cool. Justin: How is it on that limb, Pete? Because I feel like you've been out on the Pak limb for years. Pete: Yeah. Yeah. It's just me out here. Loving the Pak. Justin: I think your parents conceived you out on the Pak limb, and you've just been birthed there. Your parents heard about the facelessness around the fire, out on the limb, and now here you are, still living on the limb. Pete: Nothing like limb living. Justin: Limb living. I think it's so smart that they did a long story in the past. It was great. Greg Pak really understands the characters and really put them out there, and then to jump forward in time where we get to sort of collect them again is super fun. Well done. Alex: Yeah. I agree. Next up, Crossover #4 from Image Comics, written by Donny Cates, art by Geoff Shaw. In this issue, we're picking up with our adventurers who met Madman, the character, from Mike Allred and Laura Allred, last issue. He is going to help them get inside the dome that has covered Denver, I believe, if I remember correctly, and locked in a bunch of comics characters. We again get a bunch of cameos and fun stuff in this issue. We also get some shout outs to Donny Cates and, I believe, Geoff Shaw's own work as well. This is great. This is a blast to read, and even Donny Cates self inserting himself here is super fun. Justin: I mean, it's great to see Madman in action. That guy can yo. Alex: Yeah. Yo, yo. Pete, you got to be happy. There is a Stay Puft Marshmallow Man in this issue. Pete: Oh, yeah. You got to love that. I also impressed with the art here, because it has the kind of dot, kind of old-timey kind of comic book style, which is really interesting with Madman, with kind of more vibrant characters as well. It's just really cool to see them all standing in a room. So I'm glad we got that moment. The kind of torture shit freaked me out a little bit, but man, really great story. Fun stuff. Alex: Good stuff. Next up, Skulldigger Skeleton Boy #6 from Dark Horse Comics, written by Jeff Lemire, art by Tonci Zonjic. We've been talking about a lot of the Black Hammer books. We kind of missed this one in terms of reviewing. So I figured it was worth catching up with the last issue here. I'll tell you what. I … This is all me … forgot about Tonci Zonjic. Amazing artist. Justin: Yeah. Great art. Alex: I was so happy to read this again. I was like “Oh, my god. I'm sorry I forgot you. You're so good.” Pete: Yeah. Justin: Yeah. It's so dynamic. It almost has a little Darwyn Cooke to it, but a little bit of just great, I don't know, Greg Capullo style action. Really good, and the story was great. I feel like the Black Hammer universe is just prime time right now. Pete: Yeah. Yeah. I mean, I agree. The panels, the layout, the way the action flows. Really, really fun and impressive, but also some really touching moments, like the look on the kid's face. They just keep just showing the kid's face, so different in each panel in the way that it's just kind of colored. Really impressive, the way they can kind of show emotion through this still panel here. Yeah. I was just really kind of moved by this. I thought it was a really solid issue. Justin: The last page, which is almost like an epilogue to the book, just a standalone splash page, was so emotional and great. Pete: Yeah. Alex: We're not really talking about the plot here, because we didn't read the previous five. This is the last issue, but the fact that they can get across enough of the emotion and story in one issue that is the last one to people who have not read the previous five is very impressive. Pete: Yeah. Alex: Next up, let's talk about it, Ice Cream Man #23- Pete: Oh, here we go. Alex: … from Image Comics, written by W. Maxwell Prince, art by Martín Morazzo. I know Pete is scared of this one. Pete: Yeah. Alex: Yeah? Pete: Yeah. Alex: So another standalone issue of Ice Cream Man, as a lot of them are, mind you, but in this one, it's text pages interspersed with splash pages of essentially our main character, the Ice Cream Man, going on a talk show with a bunch of animals, until a snake bites the shit out of the talk show host's face. The thing that is so terrifying about this is the text pages takes place after it. So you're reading the story of the horrific things that happen to him, and you're like “Oh, we're going to see this. We're going to see this at some point. It's coming. It's coming. It's coming-“ Pete: I was like “Don't show me. Don't. You wrote about-“ Alex: “… It's coming. It's going to happen,” and the entire issue, and finally they pulled the lid off, and it's great. Another incredible one-shot issue of Ice Cream Man. Not enough good things to say about this book. Justin: I feel like W. Maxwell Prince is just sitting at home tactically trying to break down how to engineer scares in the paper and the printed medium. It's wild that he is able to continue to find new ways to stress us the fuck out. Pete: That's what's so impressive about this is each comic is so different but has that same tension, and they've done so many different creative ways to scare the shit out of us, and you think “All right. Well, how's this going to stack up? It can't be as great as the last issue.” It continues to deliver. Unbelievable, and I don't know. It seems like shots fired at Jimmy Fallon in these, but this is a crazy book that made me read, and I don't want to read, and it's still so well done I read and didn't hate it. Alex: It's good stuff. Moving on to Crimson Flower #2 from Dark Horse Comics, written by Matt Kindt, art by Matt Lesniewski. Pete, you seem to like this book. Pete: Oh, my god. Alex: This is about a bounty hunter, I guess, who is going crazy, something like that? Pete: Well, yeah. It's about a lot of things, but it's mainly about this person trying to get revenge, trying to find out who killed their father, I believe is what she's freaking out about, and just the fact of she's just driving angry, just chomping pills and half seeing reality, half seeing this tripped-out evil shit is really crazy but also very impressive what goes down, and then the whole fact of she's not going to do well but keeps kind of playing this trickery and then kind of reveals, throughout, she's telling a story within the story … I was just really impressed with this. Very creative. Very fun. Amazing art. Just really fun story. Justin: Yeah. I really liked this as well. It feels like fairy tale stories. She's like a Little Red Riding Hood but who grew up to become an- Pete: A badass. Justin: … assassin out for revenge, who crosses over with some other dudes who are sort of giants, maybe, but also just shit-head other assassins. It's really fun. Pete: What's awesome is it starts off and it kind of reminds me a little bit of Locke & Key, the paneling and just the different kind of character designs, but then just kind of goes off into its own completely different thing, and yeah. I just think it really worked on a lot of levels. Alex: Next- Justin: That art's sort of reminiscent of … Sorry … of Black Hole. Alex: Oh, yeah. I can see that. Justin: In a good way. Alex: Next up, Post Americana #3 from Image Comics, story and art by Steve Steve Skroce. As we've been talking about with the last couple of issues of this book, this is a satirical, post-apocalyptic tale about a guy who's kind of trying to save the world but mostly messing it up. Continues to be gross and funny in exactly the right way. I'm enjoying this book. I'm having a fun time reading it. How about you guys? Justin: I agree. The art, I feel like, really took a step up in this issue. We get a lot of close-ups on the characters, and it really … I think the earlier issues were a little wild, and it's like cannibals fucking around. So it was a little loose. Everything really tightens up in this issue. We get a lot of back story, and I think the art mirrors that in a way that I thought was just very smart. Pete: Yeah. I agree. I think the art is great. There's amazing action, and the story does tighten up, and things start to kind of make more sense, and we're able to kind of follow things a little bit easier, which is great, but the classic … When somebody comes to visit unannounced, you almost kill them. So you really got to be careful when you go to somebody's house, guys. Justin: Yeah. By the way, Pete, we're coming to your house at 4:04. So put your ax down when we stop by. Pete: Yeah. You might want to text me, because I just want to not accidentally ax you. Justin: Ax-identally. Alex: Ax-identally. Thanks for [crosstalk 00:42:27] audio podcast. Justin: It'll work in court. Pete: Yeah. No problem. Alex: You Look Like Death- Justin: Joke heard and acknowledged. Alex: You Look Like Death #6 from Dark Horse Comics, written by Garard Way- Pete: You look like death. Alex: … art by Shaun Simon. This is a tale from the Umbrella Academy. We are wrapping it up of Klaus's time in Hollywood. It wraps back to the beginning. You had to love this, Pete, another mention of relish, your favorite topping. Pete: Well, I don't know about that, but I do love the characters in this. Klaus is one of our favorites. So it's just very kind of interesting to kind of see it in this kind of art style, and I'm just so used to the show. It's almost weird to read the comic, but yeah. This is a really cool story, really fucked up. Spiders scare the fuck out of me. So this is kind of a nightmare, but yeah. This is just great Umbrella Academy fun. Justin: I love relish. I love- Pete: Really? Justin: Yeah. Relish is one of my favs. Pete: Have to have it on a hot dog? Or what's up? Justin: A hundo percent. Pete: Really? Justin: Yeah. I'm a mustard- Pete: Get that shit away from my dog, bro. Justin: Mustard, relish. I'll do sweet. I'll do dill. Pete: Oh, wow. Justin: If you pickle anything, JT's there. If you want me to pop by, pickle something, and this book is fun too. Alex: Yes. It's like the pickles of comic books. Moving on to the The Scumbag #5 from Image Comics, written by Rick Remender, art by Wes Craig. Get the old … Oh, my god … Deadly Class team back together again for this issue, so a switch up of the artist, but we're still following the same old Scumbag as maybe he finally grows a little bit of a heart this issue. This is super fun. I really liked seeing Wes Craig's take on this book in particular. I enjoyed that quite a bit. Yeah. This book is a blast. It's fun to read. Justin: It's very fun. The characters, our main characters … I love watching their relationship between the Scumbag, his handler, and the sex android who drives them around and refuses to have sex with him no matter how many times he asks. It's all very fun stuff in that sort of reverent Remender tone. Pete: Yeah. I think what's nice is I was getting a little tired of Scumbag being a scumbag. So it's nice to see the Scumbag evolve a little bit so we can have somebody to root for in this, but man, Remender, dude. Holy shit. You think you're like “Okay. I know what this is about.” Nah. He loves the twists and turns. He loves to keep you guessing, and then when you're not ready, he'll break your heart if you're not careful, but man, guys, don't listen to magical Christmas trees that smile way too much. All right? Alex: Very fun bit though. Justin: Good advice. Alex: Last but not least, Rain Like Hammers #2 from Image Comics, written and art by Brandon Graham. I'll tell you what. I was very surprised to find out this was an anthology with this issue. That's not what I was expecting. Justin: Well, I feel like a lot of Brandon Graham's stuff are loose anthologies where there's some connection, there's a lot of tonal overlap and everything. I definitely like sort of the rules of the world are the same. Man, I love this book. Of any issue this week, this was the most just transporting book that I read. It's so funny. It's beautifully drawn. It's so interesting. There's just a ton of ideas at play here all the time. Great, great book. Can't recommend this highly enough. Alex: That's it. We’re all fishing in the same pond.” – Phil Johnston on Conversations with Calcaterra “The protagonist is the one who suffers the most. Even though you love the characters you really want to punish them to have a good story.” – Phil Johnston on Conversations with Calcaterra Phil Johnston began his career as a broadcast journalist but couldn’t give up on the idea of creating films which led him to pursue an M.F.A. at Columbia University School of the Arts in New York. Welcome to Episode One of behind the resume podcast with Max Hanson. We're purpose driven leaders dig deep to share insights on what got them to where they are today, even more importantly, where they're preparing themselves for better tomorrow. Today, our guest is Ian Lopatin who's currently the co founder of spiritual gangster, a hip yoga line. That's all about spreading good vibes, giving back and choosing kindness. Before creating spiritual gangster Ian was a lawyer turn Yogi, where he started ran and sold at one yoga to lifetime is a close friend and one of the positive most positive people I know. Ian, welcome to the show. Ian: [1:14] Glad to be here, Max. Thanks for having me. Max: [1:16] I have so many questions for you and so many things to talk about. So I can't wait to get going on this. This could probably last for like four days. Ian: [1:22] I'm looking forward to it. All right, well, let's go. I ate before I came here. I don't know four days will work. But I didn't Max: [1:27] Robin four days. Okay. So this is episode one. So no pressure. But we did have a built on podcasts before this. And there was 39 episodes with Brian Moore. So this is my first episode a little nervous. But let's get after it. First of all, frame it. This is behind the resume is the vision of this podcast is really to Front Load the business stuff and then go deep. So we'll get there. And then for all the listeners out there, Ian has not been given the questions, so he's not prepared. With that said, Ian, if you want to pass on a question. I have lots of good questions. Feel free to just say pass and we'll pass. So here we go. And then at the very end, then I'm going to go into a rapid fire section. We'll go through questions a little bit quicker. Good. Awesome. All right. So here we go. Tell me about your nickname, The eagle. I just discovered this at a current text conversation with him. I asked if he had any nicknames. And he said the eagle and I couldn't wait to hear where did it come from? Ian: [2:19] So this is interesting. It comes back you know from we used to live in LA. And it's if we would always be wanting to deliver you something special. They say the Eagle has landed. And it really became from like, we're flying high. So we got the eagle. Max: [2:35] All right. All right. I love it. The eagle makes a lot of sense. All right, what's the most interesting thing going on in your life right now? Ian: [2:44] Well, one thing I'm really excited about spiritual gangster I've been a lifelong fan of the Grateful Dead. And in two weeks, we're launching a collaboration with spiritual gangster and the Grateful Dead. So it's an amazing way for me to share with everyone in spiritual gangster how much the Grateful Dead has been an influence on my life. And you know, we're we're bringing that ethos and vibrations and getting out to the spiritual gangster gang community. And to me, I'm super excited about that, because as a lifelong, Grateful Dead fan, and seen, you know, over 50 shows, and they've been a massive impact and how I see the world. And now I'm really excited to get to share what I love with you know, people that I love. Max: [3:26] I love that i i know i know you so well and I didn't know this was going on. We also went to a Grateful Dead show right before COVID hit was dead Ian: [3:34] Dead Company, which was amazing. And they're they're doing they're doing amazing. They're keeping on the vibrations of the grateful that you know, even one thing I was saying is God bless John Mayer, I love what he's doing. And I love how he's really, you know, made the Grateful Dead music relevant with younger generations now. So that's awesome, too. Max: [3:51] Yeah, Brian Moore be so proud of this podcast, starting out with the Grateful Dead content here. But so spirit, speaking of spiritual gangster, it's a brand I love. How did it come to be? I know it's a big question. We'll dig a little deeper in there. But how did it come to be anything about spiritual gangster? Ian: [4:07] So spiritual gangster, it's always been a movement to us. And you know what I used to teach yoga here and we had a chain of yoga studios and we would teach yoga really all over the world. But one of the things that I used to do is I used to teach yoga to hip hop rap music, and it would be anywhere from like Tupac to Biggie to Nelly back and a friend of mine after class one day she came up to me and she said, You're a gangster. You're like a spiritual gangster and we started selling t shirts that we sold in our yoga studio here. And once we ended up deciding to sell the yoga business at one yoga lifetime fitness, you know, we kept spiritual gangster because it really started as the house brand that we were selling in the yoga studio. And then you know turn from really a hobby to an expensive hobby and passion into you know, now a global movement. Max: [4:53] Oh, I love it. I love it. Where When was that? When did you first No, it was a movement Ian: [4:58] from the beginning. I mean, we you know intentionally what we realized is when we created the yoga studios, you know, we created almost I mean, like Howard Schultz, they were the third place where people would come in and be like a fitness thing, it would be a social element and also have a spiritual component. So they come and they could mix with community. And what I realized in the yoga business, it was extremely labor people dependent, and in order to scale that you just have to manage. And so what we wanted to figure out is how can we take the vibes? And really what what we learned from building the yoga community, and how do we share it with the world versus our local community here? So that was always our intention behind it. Ian: [5:38] And now, it's really, you know, snowballing. Max: [5:41] Yeah, I feel so good. When I wear my spiritual gangster stuff, man, and I've heard you talk about this, you've said this to me before, but you talk about how people represent brands. And then when you wear your spiritual gangster shirt, you are the brand. Ian: [5:54] So I feel like it's superhero clothes. Sometimes for as adults, I mean, we get more letters from people who are, you know, whether they're dealing with a cancer treatment or something, then the the shirt makes them feel better about themselves. And I wear it every day, or they're going to, you know, give us big speech, and they put on a special shirt. But I think it allows people to feel better about themselves. And you know, a friend of mine who used to have an ESPN show, and he would travel all over, and he would wear our brand. And he wore a couple other brands. And he would say, hey, he and when I'm wearing these other brands, I feel like I'm repping the brand. When I'm wearing spiritual gangster, I feel like I am the brand. And that's what I think a lot of people, you know, there's a lot of spiritual gangsters out there. And people define it in different ways for themselves, but we want it to be empowering for people. And I think that, you know, you are the brand when you're wearing it. Max: [6:40] Yeah, no, I definitely feel that way. So let's talk about Tell me about the at one yoga journey that led to spiritual gangster I just realized as I was kind of digging around preparing for this, that that was like a 13 year journey. Is that right? Ian: [6:53] Exactly. So I went to law school in California. And in my first year law school, I was, you know, law schools are very competitive stress environment. And I was looking for ways to just, you know, de stress and I was learning to surf and I wasn't good. I was just getting pounded, and I go running. And my mom said, you know, go check out a yoga class and yoga. This is about 25 years ago, but yoga was starting to boom in LA. And I went to a class and it felt amazing. And then I had a like a lot of synchronicity and serendipity happened. But one of the greatest things that happened to me is I was flying back from I went to see my mom in Florida. I was flying back from Florida to LA. And she gave me a yoga book. So I got on the airplane, and there's an Indian guy sitting next to me in a satin jacket with a tiger on the back and his wife. And I take my yoga book, I'm like, he's like, Oh, you do yoga, I am Bikram I'm like you want to see my book, I've no idea who the guy is. At the time. He goes, I have my own book 2 million copies. So I landed I went to the border bookstore, borders Bookstore at the time when they existed in Westwood bought his book and he was literally 10 minutes from so I would go to Bikram once or twice a day. And I then I ended up taking a teacher training at yoga works. And this time when I first started going to yoga, there was like 10 or 15 people. And by the end of the year, there was like 80 to 100 people in the class, it was just like at a tipping point. But it was only happening in New York and LA. So I come out to Arizona on family vacations, and I look for the yoga studio. And it was, I mean worse than like the basement of the dirtiest motel six, and it just didn't exist here. So you know, one thing led to another but I took some business classes at UCLA business school and wrote a business plan. And I had some friends who sent me money. And while studying for the LA bar, I ended up opening the yoga studio in Arizona. And then for the first like six or eight months, I would be a yoga teacher on the weekends and fly back to LA be an entertainment lawyer and then like twice a month fly out here. And you know, what I realized, you know, pretty early on is that for our business really to work, I had to quit being my being a lawyer and move out here and really run it. Max: [8:56] Yeah, how long were you an attorney for? Ian: [8:58] So I was an attorney briefly. You know, I got the job my second year, and I worked there less than four months. I knew immediately like, I just, it wasn't for me. And was really, this is a funny story to like, I came back on vacation, I went to go quit my job like four days, five days in a row. And I kept going into the office to quit, but none of the partners are there because it was over over the holidays. And they had given me like a big like bonus to start, you know, and then they gave me another holiday bonus. And I offered the bonus back. And they're like No, thank you very much. But if you want to come back, you can come back. And then after that they changed the clause that if you quit being a lawyer within a year or two you to pay back the bonus. It was funny. Max: [9:37] That's amazing. That shit only happens that Ian lopate and by the way, in fact, I'll jump in there now, because I think this is hilarious. There was one point when I first met Ian and a couple years ago that I ran into him like four times in a week. And so I hadn't really I didn't know him that well yet and I kept saying like what's crazy I keep running into you. And I will say that the better that I've got to know Ian There really is no coincidences, like, you just you open yourself up for what's going to happen and it just happened. So I mean, talk about that. I know there's this couple of things I want to touch on with that. But you kind of take that run with it. I know things just you just feel like they just happen if you set yourself up. Ian: [10:15] And I'm a big believer, like interesting coincidence gets misinterpreted. Coincidence comes from the Latin terms when two angles coincide. And that means perfect alignment. So everything's coincidence. The idea is just to be open to it. So I, you know, I'm a big believer of like, showing up open and seeing what's here for me and you know, one of the things and I, I call it creating friends and Fred's are one of my teachers, Dr. Berry taught me this, but as friends in the energy, so everywhere I go, I create friends to be like, oh, they're like, you know, this is a great story. Just a simple one. The other day, I was flying back, I went to see my sister for and took my son. And we ended up flying back. So we we got to the airport. And, you know, I got there a little bit early, and I wanted to come home for my other son's birthday. And I saw Oh, there's another flight there. And it's, it's open. So I kind of do my energy exercises, tapping on the energy. And I walk up and say, Hey, can we get on this earlier? flight? They said, Well, we have policy. We can't you check bags. We can't put you on the earlier flight. Okay, thank you. But uh, let me see what you can do. Five minutes later, the ladies like check. So the supervisors come back to me, she goes, Oh, sir, we got you on the flight. No problem. You just gotta get your own bags. I'm like, No, she's then then I sit on the airplane and they tapped me when I get on the airplane when I'm supposed to be on. They said, Oh, sir, we want to go sit up in first class. I was like, perfect. And then my bags got there. And I didn't have to pay anything. But that kind of stuff happens me all the time. Like you find someone lets you in the door. There's Fred's available everywhere if you if you create them. So I'm always looking in the moment. Okay, how's this supposed to work out for me? You know, one of, you know, my favorite trips, like we talked about is like, you know, going to the, the NCAA, I mean, the NBA Finals game, I show up to the wrong airport at like two in the afternoon after the dead shows we were at together in LA. And I get to the airport and I go to the wrong airport, I go to Burbank instead LA. So I'm like, okay, tip office in three hours. There's no commercial flights. I ended up getting a ride from another friend of mine who owns the wires on their jet, we circle the arena, I walk in the arena, I get to hang out with Tony Robbins before tip off, and then fly home on another private jet all because I went to the wrong airport and missed the flight. So I just I'm a big believer in, you know, everything always works out. You just gotta stay open to it. I think that a lot of times the best plans happen once once the first part of the plan kind of goes awry. Max: [12:34] yeah. No, that's awesome. I think you and I talked about you just feet you you can walk in as basketball Stadium, but he is very into basketball, run into it. In the front row. It's son's games. And he can walk into the stadium and end up in the front row. Even if he doesn't have tickets. Like, he's just how does that work? Ian: [12:51] It just always works. I mean, I have to, you know, have to say last year, I think I was in seven different arenas and got to sit on the floor and all the different games and just not even having a plan. You know, Phoenix, we have courtside seats, but just sort of would happen one thing would lead to another and I think to that when you share what you love, then it comes back to you 10 acts. So I mean, one thing I love is basketball is sharing and VA and it comes back to me and I think that just planting the seeds for that flow to come back to you always. You know, just it just works if you stay open to it. Max: [13:21] Yeah, yeah. Well, speaking of that, so everything kind of just happens for a reason. And things have worked out pretty well for you and, but he's also into a lot of personal development stuff. And I know this personally, because he was in we took a positive intelligence course and we're in the same pod. And I think he told me he took a happiness course at Yale. He's been the it's at least two or three Tony Robbins events that I know of. But tell me a little bit about why personal development such a priority to you and then let's talk about some of the personal development experiences that have been that you would rank the highest Ian: [13:55] i think you know, one of the things from the positive intelligence class that I learned when we did together is my one of my number one drivers. I'm curious, I love to learn and I love to grow and I also realize I'm my own graves asset. So I'm always learning I'm always reading I'm spending it's just part of who I am and allowing myself to become you know, just you know, I like to get healthier wealthier, smarter, more intelligent everyday and continue to expand we live in expanding universe. So I love to keep feeding myself. You know and i think that i've you know, Robin Sharma has been a really good friend of mine You know, I've done a lot of stuff a Tony Robbins has been incredible. You know, someone I'm working with right now who's absolutely amazing. As Dr. Barry Margolin, he does energy for success. We've done landmark stuff together. So I'm always consuming different different types of stuff and beyond just intellectual stuff. We've done Wim Hof breathing, you know, we have a couple trainers we work with all the time. So you're we're working mentally and physically all the time to to have more energy to have more vitality and also just grow and learn and I'm a big believer of like, once you get the lesson, then you can move on. So how do I get the lessons quicker? How can I learn from others? So I don't have to make mistakes the hard way. And, you know, so that's a part of, you know, my life philosophy. And it's really allowed me, you know, to continue to build who I who I am. Max: [15:19] yeah. Well, speaking of that, I have spent some time with you. And some of my favorite memories are showing up to his office, and he'd have a, you'd have a bathtub full of ice for us to do ice ball. And so let's talk about daily routines and rituals. I mean, I've done you know, some some stuff with you bio chargers, stuff like that. Let's talk about what you think works the best and in an ideal world, and then maybe talk about what you've been working on. I know you and Craig, we're working on some stuff, as far as you know, the kind of the biohacking side of things. But let's talk about first of all, your favorite daily routines and rituals. Let's talk about that first. Ian: [15:53] So, you know, things that I do daily are I do a journaling, I actually keep three journals, I keep a five minute journal, which is how I started journaling. And my mother passed away about three years ago. And I've journaled every single day since she passed away. And the other two journals I keep, and this comes from the Dr. Barry Morgan's course, energy for success. I keep one journal, which has all my goals for the day. And then I keep the whole idea is that I'm building a platform to live my life on and this platform is not only am I building, I'm building it, so I can take it with me. So I write goals and all these different areas and relationships and expanding finances and creativity and intelligence, and health and vitality and serendipity. And so this, this platform continued, I feel it every day. And then there's a whole second journal that keeper only my wins. So when something great happens, coincidence, serendipity things drop into my lap, I keep journaling and writing those. So I'm, I'm keep investing energy. And it's like momentum, life works and momentum. So those are my momentum practices. I do breathing exercises every day. So a meditation slash breathing exercise, you know, we have a cold plunge in our house, I'm a huge, I did a cold punch before I came over here today. And then I I work out, you know, I have a trainer, I have multiple trainers who come to the house. And, you know, someone told me this is funny, because we're kind of recording this at the end of COVID. But these people said, you're going to come out at COVID three ways, a hunk a drunk or a chuck. So I think it's you know, you right now, you know, a lot of what I've always been working from home, you know, I've always been working from zoom, I've kind of like created this thing. And now a lot of things are the world's moving in that direction, where you can be casual, where you can get a lot of stuff done, you know, without having to have an office and go to a lot of people. And I think that, you know, what I'm finding is that I've been doubling and tripling down on all these practices over the last like three months. So instead of a trainer twice a week, I've had three different trainers twice a day. So really stepping up these practices. And you know, what I find personally is my coincidence, increases my synchronicities, my vitality, my energy, and also like my abundance and prosperity. I think everything's related. And I think that, you know, you have to raise the entire platform. Because if you're wealthy and even though healthy, have nothing if you're healthy, and you've no access to abundance, it's a much different life. And I think that you have to have relationships and creativity and all this stuff, his life is set up for us to succeed. And I think the whole key is fueling yourself to have enough energy and vitality and be open enough to take advantage of that and enjoy it. Max: [18:30] Yeah, yeah. And I've heard you talk about how life is happening for you, not to you. So think about in thinking of how COVID How has COVID happened for you, and not to you? Ian: [18:42] You know, I more blessings. I mean, our business has never been better, you know, we have a business that is gone now, even more and more direct to consumer online. So that's fantastic, we'd have a better relationship with our customers. You know, I've had more I used to have to travel a lot our office or in LA. Now I have way more quality time. You know, we both both have four kids, two younger boys. So I got to spend way more time with my kids and I ever had not been traveling and just also to building fitness and routines and getting the trainer's to come over and really working on a real platform and a home base. These have been all massive blessings, my relationship with Vanessa, like so many things have really blossomed and even like working on our house because we're all traveling. We never really did all this stuff. So for me, it's been building a great platform to really thrive off of and also getting in better shape physically and mentally. I think now more than ever, people are afraid. And that's what I think this thing is brought up and people it's brought up fear, money and health, which are like the two most root basic. And I think it's more important now than ever to take care of your own mental state and your physical state. Max: [19:55] Yeah, yeah, absolutely. So I was lucky to I got to Idaho, and We are a 200 yards from the fitness center for the first two months of it. So Ian: [20:03] when I mean I would love you to show me pictures of your, your red light deal. And I mean, it's, it's all these things and you realize when you're doing these things to take care of yourself, you feel so much better you have more time for your kids, you have more energy to do the things you love. And I just think that the number one biggest thing that people should be investing in is themselves and their own health and wellness. Max: [20:23] Yeah, I agree. I was doing great. At the beginning of the summer, I was in really good, really good shape all of June. And I was eating a lower sugar diet. And I was up in Idaho. And this bartender that I had been to a few times I was drinking a little bit more often than I normally do because we're at the lake. And I told him, Hey, can I just do the vodka soda, the North 44 and soda, because I'm not really eating a lot of carbs. And he said to me, this is my kind of downturn where I started to gain the COVID-19. Now I'm starting to take it off again. But he said to me, he said, You know how much sugar is in that vodka? I'm like, Oh, shit. So So from that point, I, you know, kind of threw the diet out the window for a little bit. But I'm coming back. I'm coming back. So speaking of like, extreme body hacking treatments, I've done some pretty extreme stuff. I mean, I don't know, I used to plunges that extreme. But when you're jumping in a little ice bath with ice on it, that's, you know, pretty extreme. What would have been the most extreme, you know, kind of treatments or things that you've done? How would you rank it? Ian: [21:25] So I think, you know, it all depends. I think the Wim Hof stuff can be very extreme. Because it's all mentally it's very way more mentally than it is physically challenged. And the idea to be able to get yourself to go in the ice bath and not freak out and regulate your breath. And also the breathing exercise. I've been really into breathing practices lately. There's a great book by Daniel Nestor called breathe, and I just finished another book called The oxygen advantage. I think that breathing is like the new meditation, you know, people are really becoming aware which in meditation was a new yoga, people are really becoming aware of how important conscious breathing is and to breathe through your nose. So there's a lot of different breathing exercises that I've been doing that can be extremely intense, long breath holds like four or five minute breath holds. So that and I think it's overwhelming more mentally than physically. Those are the things that I'm kind of playing with now that I seem that I feel, you know, I mean, we do a lot of fun stuff that people heliski we do a ton of heliskiing and things that I don't necessarily look at as being extreme. But it's, it's one of the happiest places on the planet for me out in the middle of nature skiing powder with no one around. And it's so that that I think that's a spiritual practice for me as much as anything. Max: [22:43] In it, Ian will just disappear and he'll all sudden be surfing or heliskiing. Somewhere, it's just part of part of being Ian. So what is a model you live your life, I'm gonna change gears a little bit here. But what is the model you live your life by? Ian: [22:55] Share what you love. Max: [22:57] love it. Tell me about an experience that changed your life. You can pass Ian: [23:01] almost, I almost failed out a law school. And then I studied and applied myself. Really, really, really. And I finished the top of my class like top five people in my class. And that really led me let me realize that I could do it my way versus having to do it the way everyone else was doing it. Max: [23:19] And that was you graduate from UCLA. Right. Ian: [23:21] I graduated from UCLA. So Max: [23:22] it wasn't an easy school. Ian: [23:24] And it was just it was a great experience of of trusting that I can get it done doing it the way that I wanted to do it versus kind of falling in the matrix or getting getting stuck where everyone else was going. Max: [23:35] Yeah, going back to the foundation, because I think this is important. And I don't know if I've ever asked you about this. So I might as well learn some stuff and share it with everybody else that's listening. How did you first get into yoga to because I think that was kind of one of the foundational things if you talk about, you know, just the the positive nature and just you know, how you carry yourself, what was the building block, like when you're younger. Ian: [23:56] So, you know, it's interesting, my mom was very spiritual. My dad was a lawyer, but my mom was very spiritual. And she had some health problems that, you know, open her up to a bunch of alternative healers. But one of the things we used to have, she would have this guy come from Swami satchidananda, his ashram, this guy, Bob Burns, and he would teach yoga, and I used to think it was like crazy, but we do like shoulder stands and headstands. And I got away from it. And then my first year of law school, I was, you know, I was going through an ending of my college relationship with my old girlfriend and just feeling stressed with law school. My mom's like, you should go to yoga, and I went into yoga, and it felt amazing. And I do think that yoga, you know, it's not like a magic bullet for things. But for me, what it's done is it's opened me up to this whole world of, I don't want to call it self help but self discovery, and going deeper and learning how to work with my own body and getting into it. And it really, you know, changed my path like I was extremely not flexible. I mean, I think I was not flexible mentally as well as physically and it's really really opened me up. And it's also allowed me to experience so many different things that came from that. Max: [25:06] Gotcha. Ian, by the way, is one of the only guys that will walk up to me and fix my posture from behind him grab my shoulders and open me up. But I will say, I, since you've done that the first time, and he didn't just do a once every time you'd see me walk up, and it was like my mom, you know, grabbed me and put me in the right position. But so he grabbed me and opened me but I, since then, I always do this and that he you can't see it, because you're listening. But he's got his arms open. And he's, you know, stretching out, but he's opening himself up to talk about posture and like, Why so that's so important. Ian: [25:36] You know, I think they all these different things about body language, but what you're saying is only a portion of how you're communicating. And there's a great thing we should share with your audience. There's a Stanford professor called Amy Cuddy, who did a TED talk on posture. And it just, it's amazing. Just how physical posture affects everything not only affects your mood, but it affects how people perceive you. And, you know, I'm a big believer of like we talked about earlier, if you're gonna make the most of your environment, you have to be open to it. That's why I like heliski. And that's why I'm getting the fly fishing, you have to be tuned into your environment, like even golfing what's happening in the, in the elements around you. And when you're closed off physically, you're not tuned into your environment. So I think that how you carry yourself, you know, we have all these sensors, we're more than five senses, we have hundreds of different sensors in the body. It's like when you learn to ride a bike, no one teaches you ride a bike, all of a sudden, you get it right, you turn on the sensor of balance, someone's sensor balance is so good, they can walk across a tightrope in the middle of the Grand Canyon. And once you learn how to ride a bike, you never forget it. So life is like that. How do I get these sensors open, that are closed. And then I have all these different experiences their sensors around money, there's sensors around intelligence, there's sensors around everything, but getting your body open is is massively important. And most people close as they get older, when we you know, we're for me, I'm that's why I'm learning. I'm growing. I'm doing all this self discovery. So I every day, I want to be more open than I was yesterday. more flexible. Max: [27:02] I love it. I love that to my goal, too. So tell me on that note, and this is kind of in the same vein, what do you attribute your success to? And we're talking about I mean, all of this does, but if I asked you that question, like how would you answer it? Like what, how do you what do you attribute your success to? Ian: [27:19] I you know, it goes back to me of the notion of planting seeds. So I think there's a, I grow things in my life where other people are like hunters or gatherers. So like I have, there's a one of my greatest teachers, a guy's greatest geisha, Michael Roach, and he wrote the book, the diamond cutter, and he's the only white guy who's like a master of Isa. He's a geisha like, which is like, I'm a cardinal of like Buddhism. And he has a four step process to get what you want. One is like, figure out what you want. Step one, pretty, that's not even most people can't even get to that. Step two is find someone else who wants what you want. Step three is go help the other person get it. So that's counterintuitive. Most people you know, it's like in order to get it, you got to give a fourth and the fourth step, which is like the real magic how you fertilize it is like when you're at home and you feel really good about helping the other person get it. So I'm a big believer of success comes from planting seeds and being generous. You know, one of the things we talked about, we didn't talk about this, but since we started spiritual gangster, you know, we've done I think over 13 million meals now with Feeding America plus we do a bunch of other stuff with but we found what I call karmic business partners. So when it's not just the company, spiritual gangsters winning, every time we sell an item online, we donate a meal. So the customer gets the karma donating the meal, and someone gets fed. And so it's it's important that you know, I call it 360 degree winning or even things that happen spiritually, when someone walks in the office. It's not just the owners who when the employees when the customers win, but the FedEx or UPS guy wins the everyone feels good and feels the energy. And that's how I think it's important to build things. And I think that's why it's successful. Because we're having a real positive impact, and it's intentional. Max: [29:06] That's what I love, too. If you go to their website, they don't brag about this. They do it for the karmic reasons. Ian: [29:11] For years, we didn't even share about it. And now I feel a lot like way better about sharing about it. One thing you know, you know, one of the greatest things that we talk about, you know, you do things and all these wonderful things come from it, like you know, we had a great thing. And one day we were on Good Morning America, Savannah Guthrie, whose initials are SG love spiritual gangster, she got to pick one brand in the entire country. And she made her shirt called like you with my wife. And in five minutes, we sold enough to sell to give 3 million meals. And we got Tony Robbins to match it. And that's how I ended up getting connected. Tony Robbins who ended up inviting me to date with destiny. Of course that's how it happened. So it's just like these things snowball in a way better than you could ever expect it. Max: [29:56] yeah. No, I love the given back piece of spiritual gangster, it's one of the reasons I love the brand. It Tell me about the challenges and finding one's purpose or challenges you've had and kind of finding your purpose. I mean, it sounds like you're a spiritual gangster, you know, I kind of know you and met you just a couple years ago. So you're pretty far down the journey, but in finding your purpose in life, and maybe maybe you're still in the search purposes, a journey for sure. But tell me about the challenges and finding your own purpose and, you know, kind of share the challenges other people have that you see and finding their purpose. Ian: [30:32] I think clarity is powerful. So, you know, one of the things the practices that Tony Robbins I got from David s&c is you get really clear of like, you know, what are your drivers? What do you value the most, and we even, you know, did a little bit of that in positive intelligence, but what's important to you and then every year I keep a board of these are my four goals for the year. And then when you get them you want to always be setting new goals. I think a lot of people some people are super successful, they reach their goals, and they don't set new ones and they kind of plateau. So you always want to be you know, right as you get close to hitting a goal, you want to set another one. And I think that it's you know, one getting clear what you're going for because clarity is power. If you don't know what you're aiming at, you don't know when you're gonna hit the target or not. So I'm a big believer of like writing things down even the journaling, like I write daily goals and things I wanted to have a great podcast with you and be able to share the energy with people so it's very you know, important for me you know, specificity like being clear like you the way you can work with the universe's you'd be clear, you know, and I think one of my one of the greatest examples, and this gets back to it is not only people like you know, we like to golf like you want to focus the fairway, not the water. But Ghostbusters, one of my favorite movies is the greatest example of like, how most people work with the universe. Most people figure out their I don't want this, I don't want this. I don't want this their biggest fear the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. And guess what peers the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man bigger than ever. So most people are focusing on all the time of what they don't want or talking about what they don't want. It's important to be positive and speak about what you want in a way that you're having it versus the universe doesn't understand. No. So it's just you're always manifesting your your fears and nightmares. And I think most people are stuck on that channel. Max: [32:18] It's a frequency. Yeah, yeah, we were in our positive intelligence course together on our pod. So we'd have these conversations. And every morning I get up to work out I'd see a deer. And so we're trying to figure out what that is. And to Ian's point, he said, my dad died three years ago, and he loved coralayne rows that he said, Every time I saw a deer, it was probably my dad, which I don't know if I think I probably mentioned this before, but since that time, I probably saw 10 deer a day there. So it was well, there's Ian: [32:44] another great book for your readers called signs. And there was she was just on the goop deal. And, and I read that book, and I shared it with you. And you know, both my parents have passed away. And I think you know, it's just with my son and you know, deers, hummingbirds, dragonflies, birds, if you're aware of their environment, they're your people, they're always communicating to you. And then once you become aware of and see it, they'll do it even more. And it's, it's amazing. It's just, there's so much out there that's available to us, if you open up our sensors, you know, it's like, the thing is, most people are missing it. That's what we talk, you know, it's like, why is it so hard for so many because they're missing it, they're closed, they're not even, they're not even where they are Max: [33:25] They're stuck in the matrix, Ian: [33:26] they're fully in the matrix. I mean, one of my favorite movies is the matrix, you want the red pill or the blue pill, you know, it's like, what reality is going to be and and I think, you know, even now the vibe of the matrix is so thick with fear, you know, like, we talked about fear around money fear around health. And what it does is it close closes people down. And it's a frequency of, of lack versus abundance. And then the other side of the coin is, you know, you're in the energy and you have coincidence, and you have serendipity in your, you're in tune with the animals and wonderful things drop in your lap. And it's even better than than could be expected. Yeah, but there's, there's two frequencies. And whichever one you invest in, the thing of this is really important. That's what we talked about building a platform, is the matrix is always going to want to crush you or bring you down. So that's why it's so important to do these practices and build your energy up. So you're at a different frequency, and that you're coming out with vitality versus coming out of it. In a broken state of lack. Max: [34:25] Yeah, yeah, he had such a good example of what he's talking about, too. So if those of you that don't know, um, I can attest to. He just lives by the stuff we're talking about. So coming back to fill in the blank, leaders would be better if they did, blank... Ian: [34:41] listened Max: [34:43] They listen. If you could sit down with one person and ask them something, who would it be and what would you ask Ian: [34:48] Tony Robbins? And I would just how do I continue to dial it up? You know, what are my three greatest things that I could tune into right now? Max: [34:58] Yeah. You went to been to two? Ian: [35:01] I've now probably been to maybe five to eight live events, I've got a two day with Destiny's and I'll redo that again, I find it's like one of the, it was one of the greatest, it happened right after my mom passed away but I went there and I was able to really author my life versus there was so much default programming in there that I was unaware of. And it was just a massive wake up call for me. And I had, you know, there have been different people and things that have shined the light on it. But all of a sudden, at that moment, like all the lights in the room got turned on, it was a it was a huge, huge beginning of, you know, a massive breakthrough that's continuing to this day. Yeah. Max: [35:45] So this is why I love asking you this question. Because it may be difficult because you have this abundance mindset. But if you knew x 10 years ago, you would have done what? Ian: [35:58] So if I knew half of what I knew now, I mean, you know, one of the biggest things that I've learned is, is really being aware with people and learning how to, to size up people better. You know, I think there's different types of people, there's people who are win win win, people like you and I are always looking to help others and contribute. And, you know, and then there's, you know, other types of people, there's some people who are win lose are always out to kind of take a little piece from you. And you know, and then there's people who are massively win losing their job, they're gonna carve you up and take as much as they can. And then there's another type of people, which is a complete narcissist, who pretend their win win win, and they got your back and they got your interest, and they're just out there to like, completely crush you. And if I had could realize that everyone's a type one, and how to how to really categorize the type one from the narcissist, and learning how to win with all these different types of people. Like, you know, that's what I've done over the last, you know, I'm a total win winner, and I'm always looking at how to have other people win. And I had a huge education and realizing that not everyone's set up that way and you also to the more the bigger light you are the narcissists are there to kind of take you out. So getting into reality and not saying everyone's the greatest guy in the world, because there's a lot of people out there that are narcissists who are out there looking to, to, to win at your expense, where I'm out there looking to win with you and everyone else involved. Max: [37:22] I love it. I love it. I think, coming into the business world, I played a lot of sports, and I was very competitive. And it took me a long time to figure out how being competitive was to my advantage in the real world of the business world. And I think if you're overly competitive, you focus on just being a little bit better than your competitors, which if that's what you're focused on, what I've learned over the years, is you missed a huge opportunity to just crush everybody not in a bad way, but crushed like the game and and change the game. So I love that. So what is the one thing you wish? People would stop saying? Ian: [37:57] I'm trying? I'm like, can't try either do it or don't? Like, it cannot? You know, that's annoying when people I'm trying? I'm trying like, Max: [38:06] either doing or you're not? Yeah, yeah, do try. And by the way, his son's name is Jedi. So he's the only guy I know who named his son Jedi. So you do not try you? Do you do it or you don't do it? Yeah. If you had only one sentence, describe yourself what would you say? Ian: [38:22] enthusiastic, positive. generous Max: [38:26] Yeah, me too. Me too. What are you curious about now? I mean, obviously, you're very curious person. That's almost all we've talked about. But like, what are you most curious about today? Ian: [38:36] right now I'm very curious about breathing. And you know why there's such a disconnect in our society of people don't know how to breathe. And I think a lot of the health issues, anxiety, over obesity are all due to people breathing through their mouth. So I'm very curious about breathing correctly, and finding ways to share that with other people. I mean, I've even been this sleeping now taping my mouth when I sleep. Max: [39:05] It's amazing. And we do we meditate at least once a week at my for my office, and we usually do it by zoom. Can we have you do blood? breathing? 100%? All right. All right, we've got them. We've got them committed. So why Sal's going to have them do our meditation this upcoming week. So what do you find most challenging? Ian: [39:25] So the thing that I find it's keeping the energy and using the energy with my kids, and staying in a positive state and always, you know, one of the things that I really, you when you're in a positive state, when you're energy rich, when you're things work better. And what I find is sometimes with my kids, that's where I'll get, I'll respond or react from an A low energy state and it's never the great way. So what I'm really working on is only responding especially with my family, my wife, then as we work together and my kids when I'm in a good energy state. And that's, it's it's more challenging than the sounds I've gotten. They're pretty good around business stuff, but around family and even little kids of, of not reacting from a from a low energy place. Max: [40:13] Yeah. What's it like, being in a successful partnership with your business partnership with your wife? And I, you know, I've been by your house recently. But what is there is there challenges in that? Ian: [40:23] Oh, there's tons of challenges. And I think it's like any relationship, it just brings, you know, different, this whole other dynamics, you know, we work together, we live together. Now, we don't have an office over, you know, we're trading and we're in different parts of the business, and she's incredible. She's super creative, and passionate, and, you know, but we've learned, you know, over the years, how to communicate with each other how to share and give feedback. And I think, you know, like, we really making massive evolutions, and we're growing and learning together, I think, you know, any relationship and it's all about growing and learning together and having each other's backs and, and just, you know, it's the same thing as raising. It's like, the, the kids are our main business and then spiritual gangsters, but we're, we're partners in life, and then all of them, you know, she's granted a lot of stuff that I'm no good at, and I'm good at other stuff that you know, so I think it's figuring out like, where to play with your strengths, and even most importantly, how to communicate. Max: [41:20] Yeah, no, that's awesome. That's awesome. All right. Well, this is uh, this has been episode one. I think he's setting the bar high for for our last guest. What a great guest have episode one. I think I planned this out perfectly. If you if you have a bad interview or conversation with Ian, it's probably not you is what I have come to the conclusion. But I'm going to start wrapping up just a little bit. We're gonna go I'm trying to create like segments. This is the first time I've ever done a podcast before so we're just kind of feeling this out. But I want to break into some segments and I always want to end like on a rapid fire question like segment so I'm gonna just kind of throw some questions at you. quick answer, actually answer as long as you want whatever you feel like needs to complete the answer, but they are in a rapid approach. So what's the first thing you do when you wake up? Ian: [42:04] I do my energy exercises. Like, like, I one of the things I learned from Dr. V, one of my meditations before I go to bed, do him like do a mantra to myself and do in the mirror. Max: [42:14] But what book Have you read more than once? Ian: [42:16] the game of life and how to play it Florence Griffith Shin, Max: [42:19] I still have not read it. You've told me about that more than once now. So what person had the greatest impact on your life? Ian: [42:26] Yeah, I would say Tony Robbins, massively impactful. There's been a lot of people who have impacted me in powerful ways. But recently, Tony Robbins. Dr. Barry Moreland very good. Sadhguru geisha Michael Roche, I've been very lucky to have like, awesome influences. Max: [42:44] Love it. What is something on your bucket list that you're waiting to check off? Ian: [42:47] Play Augusta. Max: [42:49] We have to we have to do it together. If you do that. If you could teach one subject to school children, what would it be? Ian: [42:58] mindset, the value of positive mindset and posture. Max: [43:03] Are you a morning or night person? Ian: [43:05] Both. Max: [43:06] Yeah, you know what? To think about that question. I couldn't. Ian: [43:08] I mean, I feel like I'm on like, as long as your eyes are open, yeah, I'm on that I like morning and night. And Max: [43:14] if they're not on the way Oh, and you're feeling pretty good. Probably. What's the most spontaneous thing you've ever done lately? Ian: [43:20] lately? That's a good one. I mean, I feel like a lot of spontaneity. This is a little bit not super recently, but you know, within last year, and so I was in LA I was out there. And uh, one of my best friends has his own private heliski place I'm in it's in Canada, and I don't have a passport. And I'm there for a bunch of meetings. I'm interviewing like a couple people and he calls me it's like, 99. He's like, We're going skiing tomorrow. What do you mean, I got a bunch of meetings. He's like, we're going to ski tomorrow. So I'm like, Okay, I'm like, I don't have a passport. He's like, don't worry about it. So I end up moving a bunch of my meetings doing one morning, get on an airplane. And then I have to come I'm like, I got to come back the next night because in Phoenix my this is my son's favorite player was Russell Westbrook. I promised I take him to the game. So I go we go up we heliski all day. And then I get into Canada using the energy with no passport. So getting the energy, use the pack, go to Canada, no passport, all that even asked and then now I have to fly home. So he's going somewhere else. And I have to get back to take my son to the game. So I end up getting back and having my assistant Meet me at the airport with my passport. So I get this heliski all day and then pick up my son and get to take them to see see the songs play Westbrook and he gets to hang with Westbrook and we get there in time for the warm ups and was was amazing. So and that just fell out of the blue like that was, you know, an amazing day Max: [44:49] Yeah, that's amazing. That's amazing. Ian: [44:51] But I think the biggest one for me was learning how to get in another country without a passport. Max: [44:56] That Canadian one or two. That's not exactly right. All right, well, I'm gonna have to bring this to a close. Luckily, I get to continue to talk to Ian today and moving forward. But thanks for being on episode one, you set the bar, like I said extremely high. Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi, William Thrasher, and Jersey Jason discuss the original Ghostbusters film from 1984. Zuul and Gozer the Gozerian start a phantasmagoric assault on New York City. Only Peter Venkman (Bill Murray), Raymond Stantz (Dan Aykroyd), Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis), and Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson) can save fight back with their proton packs! A nigh perfect blend of comedy, action, and horror, Ghostbusters works best when the titular team is trading barbs. Things get a little creaky here and there towards the end, but the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man battle more than makes up for it. For fans of supernatural comedies, 1984’s Ghostbusters is as big a presence as a giant Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. It has some of the best comedic acting ever recorded. It also has some interesting things to say about the role of government in paranormal small business development. We get into the libertarian slant of the film, whether or not Dr. Peter Venkman is a predator or a playboy, and we also cover a bit of the controversy surrounding the reboot.
The Mouse swallows the Fox, Netflix keeps turning into the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, but are its rivals figuring out how to cross the streams? Old tweets cause new trouble, and a king of Hollywood falls from his throne. Banter buddies Matt Belloni and Lesley Goldberg join Kim Masters for a 2018 mega banter.

This episode explores the 1984 classic "Ghostbusters". We discuss filming locations, original script ideas, how various special effects were pulled off, the soundtrack and more. Who you gonna call? Well, in this case I called 3 people who worked on the film. You'll hear long form interviews with Jennifer Runyon (the student doing the ESP test), Bill Bryan (creator of the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man suits who was also the guy in the suit on screen) and Mark Bryan Wilson (the Slimer puppeteer). Are you the Keymaster?
We play "Is That Covered?" with the original Ghostbusters film, particularly the attack of the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. It's going to be fun making sense of this one! Our website is http://www.iscovered.net

Sponsored by Karma Cola Alice has bought some new period underwear and Rose cracks out a set at the Hollywood Bowl, live on the podcast. There’s another patented Snedden sex dream and this one is a doozy. We find out how much money it would take for Rose to have sex with Donald J Trump and then at some point, it's actual Boner time. This episode’s themed Hot Yes list features the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, Frankenstein's Monster, Samara. There's also a (possibly) one-off Who Would You Have A Beer With featuring the world's most famous serial killers. Then Alice just starts yelling and upset Rose. All in all, a top ep. It’s time for another podcast of opposites. This week, we wonder out loud and in front of recording devices, what is that opposite of Blankety Blank. It’s called The Match Game in America. Also, we work out the opposite of Lotion, before we tackle the tricky subject of what’s the opposite of the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. So, are we right? Or are we the total opposite of right? Let us know what you think. You can even suggest something for us to discuss in future episodes if you like. Keep in touch, and please share the show, because it really helps spread the word.

This week we rediscover Big John Little John (a lost classic of 1970s Saturday morning TV, starring Robbie Rist!); during weird trips to the dentist, Kevin gets a flu shot and Kornflake gets a flop wreath (both will protect us through the winter); our new stack of comic books includes Josie and the Pussycats (alas, they're not in outer space... yet), The Simpsons' Treehouse of Horror (featuring Homer as the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man), and Wonder Woman: The True Amazon (by Jill Thompson, who once gave us cupcakes); Would I Lie to You (Kornflake's favorite British game show) is back, with some familiar guest stars; and we end with a "What's in the Bag" segment, compliments of an old friend of the Flopcast who knows what we like. (That'd be chickens and robots, of course.)

In this episode, the Chicks -- and Jeff! -- turn their attention to that most confusingly reviled summer remake, Ghostbusters. Spanning from analysis of how "cosplay-ish" the trailer felt to what downright just worked in this film, every angle is dissected. Did it live up to our fond memories of the original 80's classic? Or are our childhoods legitimately ruined and our psyches irrevocably damaged? How did the media's treatment of every tiny reveal, from the original announcement to the opening weekend, help or hinder? Everything is on the table and nothing is safe -- except Mike Hat, the anxiety dog. Listen in on our round-table ramblings, and comment to let us know your thoughts! The panel: Jen Wise, Carolyn Wise, Mindy Inlow, Angie Fiedler Sutton, Heather French, Sonya Rodriguez, Kathryn Sanders, Jeff Hackworth

Or will they create a whole new dynamic? Will the ghostly nemeses like Slimer and the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man make an appearance? There is internet buzz about cameos. Still live from Minnesota, it's the shocking conclusion of our MarsCon coverage! We thought we'd end the convention by stuffing a bunch of crazy people into a hotel room. We did it for science. Joining us were: Blasted Bill, Ed, Bob, Tony Goldmark, Break Man Z, Mr. Tuesday, Angela, Jared, the great Luke Ski, and Carrie Dahlby! Discussion topics include: Dementia Track concerts by Luke, TV's Kyle and Lindzilla, Power Salad, Tony, and Rob Paravonian; Kornflake's shiny new lobster songs; The Sponge Awareness Foundation's tired old School House Rock medley; Blasted Bill's Stay Puft Marshmallow Man costume; bellydancing vs. wrestling; and how Bon Jovi wants to be the air for you. Then it's time for THREE rounds of "What's in the Bag," featuring: weird items requested by Kornflake from the Pod of Destiny, a weird TV dinner from Bob, and weird cookies from Break Man Z for our annual MarsCon taste test. (Perhaps the weirdest thing is that, by Flopcast standards, this was a pretty normal weekend in Minnesota.)

Sure. 9) Okay, so we agree, whenever someone takes us off topic they get their arm hair yanked off. 10) If we're leaning towards quantum coupling... 11) And now I owe you one. 12) And now I'm gonna hear it from Jenny. 13) Jump ahead to the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. 14) It really does hold up.

Newt Gingrich, aka the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, is appalled the topic of his extramarital affairs is brought up in a presidential debate.
