He was Facebook's first Chief Marketing Officer. And left there to become the Founder and Principal of 5S Diversity. They describe their mission as accelerating the leadership journey of diverse talent and increasing its representation in senior marketing roles in the industry. He is a member of the Executive Fellows Program at Yale University and earlier this month was inducted into The Marketing Hall of Fame. He is known as an incredibly empathetic leader. As you'll hear, that may be his greatest accomplishment. Leaders, according to romantic lore, step in where angels fear to tread. They throw themselves, head first, into the fray, and generally are willing to sacrifice themselves for the good of others. Here's a simple truth. It's hard to lead anyone, anywhere meaningful, if you don't care about yourself. The pandemic has extracted a much deeper cost from leaders than most are willing to acknowledge. I see many in denial of the personal price they have paid and continue to pay for keeping the company together and the business going. The trauma of the last two plus years is real. And has been replaced by a world in which there are no rules and everyone's normal is new. If you think that you can tough your way through that then I encourage you to listen to all of this conversation. It's the story of how a leader who has achieved everything, had to first learn the very hard way what really mattered.

Hello and welcome back to the Migration & Diaspora Podcast, with me your host, Loksan Harley. Really excited to present you with the first of a new season of podcasts about everything migration and diaspora. And what better way to kick off the new season than by bringing to your airwaves one of the foremost migration communicators and someone who I'd even place in the category of "migration influencer", with us on the show to talk about migration and communications. Yes, you may have guessed it, I'm talking about Marco Ricorda. Marco is an International communication expert and analyst with 15 years experience in international affairs, social media strategy, politics and large events. He is currently Communication Officer for the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) in the Mediterranean. Marco was previously a Member of Cabinet for the President of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani, Head of Social Media of the European Parliament's liberal group - the ALDE Group - as well as of its leader, Guy Verhofstadt; Social Media Manager at the European Commission, and Press Officer at Bruegel, the Brussels-based think tank for international economic policy. Since 2017, Marco has been listed as one of the #EUInfluencers on Twitter. Marco has some pretty interesting personal interests as a competitive fitness athlete, but I'll invite you to check out his website marcorecorder.com for more on that. In our far-ranging conversation, we get Marco's take on a number of migration communications challenges, from how narratives on migration are formed, how they're influenced, and how international organisations working in the field of migration can communicate better with their stakeholders. We also get Marco's take on how the media has been reporting on the ongoing forced displacement situation in Ukraine. Before we start, I'd just like to note that Marco is speaking in a personal capacity and not on the behalf of his current employer, and all views expressed are his own. Thank you for tuning in and we hope you enjoy the show. Dan followed a path to service that many Veterans themselves have put feet to, faced choices and challenges leading up to joining.   Dan was an All-American swimmer in high school, from the age of four he honed his skills in the water and the water taught him lessons that carried over into not only his time in service but in life itself. Dan’s father passed away when he was 17 from cancer, his strong connection with his father, family, and the water got him through and onto the next chapter of his Saga.   Daniel attended college at Cornell University (Ithaca, NY), though he had discussed attending the Naval Academy. He attended OCS (Officer Candidate School) at Quantico, VA, and was stationed at Camp Lejeune, NC, where he served as a Communication Officer (0602). Dan deployed to Afghanistan to Helmand Province in 2011, forcing him to take a year off of training for triathlons, but he was submerged in more challenges that would later pay off more than training.   Dan lives in the Pacific Northwest with his wife and new baby girl. During these trying times, he has cherished the time really getting to be close to his growing family, even leaving triathlon training as a secondary passion.   Enjoy this episode everyone, won’t lie this episode really resonated with me. Dan’s understanding of his life and his connection with his father opened up lost points of truth and knowledge that my mother taught me. I slept like a baby the night this was recorded, and will again tonight after listening to it once again. Stay blessed everyone and find those points of truth, as Dan says, submerge yourself in the challenge.   HOV©2020

The world of night-time waste collectors, night shift nurses, office cleaners, rough sleepers and security guards rarely makes international headlines. Understanding what happens in cities after dark is crucial to global sustainable development, but will also help create a fairer society that values the night-time economy. The world of night-time waste collectors, night shift nurses, office cleaners, rough sleepers and security guards rarely makes international headlines. Yet the night-time is critical to building a fairer and more sustainable future for our cities. To do so, we urgently need to think more strategically about what happens after hours in Australian cities. The night-time is a critical space for addressing some of today’s most pressing sustainability challenges. For example, internationally, energy use peaks during evening hours. Then there is the an estimated 154 million people – about two per cent of the world’s population – who are homeless and face precarious situations at night when seeking food, shelter and transport in socially and environmentally hostile climates. In Australia it is has been estimated that around nine per cent of employees works in the night-time economy. Many are on low pay and work in unhealthy conditions, juggling multiple jobs. They also face longer and more difficult journeys to work, or to access services, than their daytime colleagues. More than two per cent of Australian households live in ‘food deserts’ concentrated in low-income and outer suburbs, like Western Sydney and Wyndham in Greater Melbourne, where access to affordable, healthy food options is limited or non-existent. At night, these conditions worsen as basic services like transport, retail and healthcare stop or shut and affordability plummets. Guest Producer  Kate Murray is a communications professional and knowledge broker focused on research translation. She has a Bachelor of Communication from Griffith University and a long multimedia career of content creation, ghostwriting and journalism. She is a natural organiser and community leader with a passion for collaboration challenges such as those found in interdisciplinary, international, or inter-organisational projects.

One of my favorite blog posts is on the AVC.com blog. It came out in 2010. It's called What A CEO Does. This is on Fred Wilson's blog. In this blog post, it's pretty short, but it's incredibly powerful. In this blog post, Fred Wilson describes being on a board with another VC and [00:00:30] a search at that board was doing for a CEO of a portfolio company, right? They're looking to hire a new CEO. Fred, I think he was a junior VC at that time, certainly didn't have the experience that he has now, but Fred turned to the more experienced VC as described in this blog post and said, "What does a CEO do? We're looking to hire this position. [00:01:00] What are the foundational aspects of this person's job that we're hiring for?" As Fred tells the story, the senior VC on the board replied or answered without thinking. He said, "A CEO only does three things." Oh, it's my wife calling. I'll call her right back. Fred responded that a CEO does three things. One, [00:01:30] sets the overall vision and strategy for the company and communicates it to all stakeholders. Two, recruits, hires and retains the very best talent for the company. Three, make sure there's always enough cash in the bank. In the story, Fred said, "Is that really it?" The senior VC said that the CEO should be delegating everything else in the business. I think that's right. [00:02:00] I really agree with this. There's three jobs, make sure there's money in the bank, make sure the company is making good hires, and three, communicates the vision, right? Investors, employees, customers, the market, etcetera. I've been thinking about this a lot and I really think that of those three things, communicating the vision is the most important one. Because when you [00:02:30] communicate the vision frequently and perhaps in a one too many fashion, right, through blog posts, through podcasts, through all hands meetings of the company, when you tell lots of stories, you'll make good hires. You really will. At least it helps a lot when you're making good hires, especially if a lot of the communicating the vision is also to the press, if [00:03:00] you can get it. You'll make good hires and you'll tend to have money in the bank, right? Because customers will listen to this. Customers will listen to the communication of the vision. I think kind of at the top of the food chain, this three item food chain, is communicating the vision. Something I've been doing [00:03:30] five days a week, I try and do it every weekday, but sometimes in order to hit my number here, I got to do it on the weekends, but something I've been doing is sending a daily audio note to the company about different things that are going on. I call it the B Cast. I have a channel that it goes out on. I think that's been really helpful. I've gotten some good feedback on it, but I think it's always important [00:04:00] for CEOs to be communicating. That's part of why I do this podcast everyday. It's part of why I do the daily "podcast" of the company. It's not really a podcast, but it's important. I've seen this trend recently. It's not recent. I've seen this trend for a long time of CEOs [00:04:30] [transcript truncated due to character count restrictions] Website: https://nomics.com Crypto Market Data API: https://nomicsapi.com Personal Twitter: https://twitter.com/ClayCollins Company Twitter: https://twitter.com/NomicsFinance --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nomics/support

Welcome to the Improv is No Joke podcast. Today’s guest is Bill Sheridan, the Maryland Association of CPAs’ Chief Communications Officer, editor, and resident social media cheerleader. He is creator and co-author of the association’s acclaimed blog, CPA Success; Certified Association Executive and thought leader at the Business Learning Institute; and manager of the association’s numerous social networks. Today we’re talking about what Bill sees on the horizon for information and technology, and how CPAs and other business professionals will need to adapt as technology changes. “I see a lot of change. It's going to get crazy, and it's going to get crazy really, really fast.” In 1965, Gordon Moore, co-founder of Intel, observed that the number of transistors per square inch on integrated circuits had doubled every year since their invention – or, more simply, the processing speed of computer technology is doubling every year. This observation is called Moore’s Law, and 51 years later it still holds true. “It's doing more than giving us really cool gadgets to play with. It's fundamentally changing everything.” Moore’s Law suggests that computer technology experiences exponential growth, which can be hard to comprehend. In The Future of Professions by Daniel & Richard Susskind, they illustrate exponential growth with a simple mental exercise: imagine folding a piece of paper in half over and over and over again (it’s not actually possible to fold a piece of paper more than a few times, but this exercise gives you an idea of what exponential growth looks like). 4 folds = thickness of a credit card 11 folds = thickness of a soda can 21 folds = taller than Big Ben 31 folds = tall enough to reach outer space 43 folds = tall enough to reach the Moon 100 folds = thickness of 8 billion light years “Things are are changing radically, and they're changing for CPA's as well.” CPAs will have to come to terms the fact that computers will outperform them on some tasks, but nothing will change the fact that people will still need accounting services. CPAs need to adapt to new technology and clients’ changing needs, and if you don’t adapt then the generation below you will – so you’ll still be out of a job. The profession will still exist, but CPAs will need entirely new, adaptable skillsets. CPAs will need to be better improvisers. “I'm not here to tell anybody that you have to do this stuff, because you don't, but you also don't have to stay in business.” The young professionals who are going to be leading the CPA profession in a very short period of time are completely comfortable with moving from new technology to new technology, because that's just the way life is for them. The pushback from the old guard is fine and it's not unexpected, and very soon the accounting profession is going to shift to something that's much more capable of embracing new things, just because of the shift in leadership. “If we can get there first, if we can figure out how to become a little bit more future ready and then show our clients and customers how to do that as well, then our role as trusted business advisors just gets stronger.” As Chief Communications Officer, Bill’s philosophy is that the MACPAs needs to be wherever their members are and reach them in whatever way that they like to be reached, and they try to do that across all of the different platforms. By reaching out to their audience and adding value to their social media experience, Bill helps the MACPAs maintain their role as trusted business advisors when information is more available than ever. At CPA Success they write about what members of the MACPA need to know today – breaking news, new standards, etc. At the Business Learning Institute they focus on what might be happening down the road that they should be paying attention to. Similarly, they shared important news on their Twitter feed and engage more personally with their clients on Facebook. I always enjoy sitting down to talk with Bill, and I greatly appreciate him taking the time out of his busy schedule. We’re going to touch bases again on the podcast, in about a year, to see how technology is changing and discuss how we have adapted.   Resources: Follow the CPA Success blog Get educated with the Business Learning Institute The Future of Professions: How Technology Will Transform the Work of Human Experts by Daniel Susskind & Richard Susskind A More Beautiful Question by Warren Berger The Second Machine Age by Andrew McAfee and Erik Brynjolfsson Humans are Underrated by Geoffrey Colvin   Production & Development for Improv is no Joke by Podcast Masters Learn more about your ad choices.
