Zo goes to LA to check out the homes there. He's looking at the neighborhoods, checking out the crime stats and investigating the night life. He had heard about a recent break-in at a hoity-toity neighborhood, but that no one was seriously hurt. There are rumors going around, though, that the cop who caught the suspect had beaten the ever living crap out of the guy. That same cop also seems to be hanging around that same neighborhood an awful lot lately. One can't help but wonder if that corner of utopia is actually as safe as they say; people keep saying that the house alarm at one of the houses keeps sounding off. Are there more break-ins or false alarms? And why does that cop keep hanging around on his off time? Something isn't all good in the hood. Episode Segment Time Stamps  Opening Credits . . . . . . 00:02:42Favorite Parts . . . . . . . . 00:11:59Trivia . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .00:53:33Critics' Thoughts . . . . . .00:58:02 Please leave a comment, suggestion or question on our social media: Back Look Cinema: The Podcast Links:Website: www.backlookcinema.comEmail: fanmail@backlookcinema.comYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@backlookcinemaTwitter: https://twitter.com/backlookcinemaFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/BackLookCinemaInstagram: https://instagram.com/backlookcinemaThreads: https://www.threads.net/@backlookcinemaTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@backlookcinemaTwitch https://www.twitch.tv/backlookcinemaBlue Sky: https://bsky.app/profile/backlookcinema.bsky.socialMastodon: https://mstdn.party/@backlookcinemaBack Look Cinema Merch at Teespring.comBack Look Cinema Merch at Teepublic.com Again, thanks for listening.

Today on The Neil Haley Show, Neil Haley interviews Ray Liotta Intense was the word for Ray Liotta. He specialized in psychopathic characters who hide behind a cultivated charm. Even in his nice-guy roles in Field of Dreams (1989) and Operation Dumbo Drop (1995), you get the impression that something is smoldering inside of him. He was born in Newark, New Jersey, and was adopted by Mary (Edgar), a township clerk, and Alfred Liotta, an auto parts store owner. He studied acting at the University of Miami, where he became friends with Steven Bauer (Scarface (1983), Thief of Hearts (1984)). He spent his first years acting in TV: Another World (1964), a TV movie and several short-lived series. He broke into movies with the black comedy Something Wild (1986), which garnered him rave reviews. Originally unable to get a reading, he was recommended for the part by Melanie Griffith (then married to Bauer). Following the success Something Wild (1986), he received more offers in the "psycho" vein, but refused them to avoid being typecast. Instead, he made "little movies" like Dominick and Eugene (1988), which earned him standing as an actor's actor, and Field of Dreams (1989), whose success always surprised him. When he heard Martin Scorsese was casting Goodfellas (1990), he lobbied hard for the part of Henry Hill. The film's huge success brought him wide popularity and garnered him star billing in future films such as Article 99 (1992), Unlawful Entry (1992), and Unforgettable (1996).

Hot take: "Unlawful Entry" is Ray Liotta's best performance in this run. Yes, better than "Goodfellas". WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THAT?!?!?! This movie is pretty amazing. I'm not even gonna fake like maybe we don't like it. Liotta is crazy amazing in this. His ability to generate warmth and appear to be the dopest dude ever and then be the scariest of the scaries is astonishing. It also has Kurt Russel, Madeline Stowe and that dude from Magnum P.I. that just died. ____________________________________New Trespassing Bill – the need for strong ownership rights is emphasised Tian Alberts (legal and liaison officer at Sakeliga) talks to James Kemp in the Beleidsradar insert (Pretoria FM). The insert takes a look at the new Unlawful Entry on Premises Bill that was recently published for comment. This Bill has been prominent in the news and on social media. Alberts gives more information on the Bill and refutes a number of misconceptions. What is important to Sakeliga, however, is that right of ownership must be protected. The Bill retains the statutory offence of trespassing and it contains nothing unusual this regard. However, elements such as the role of the SAPS as stipulated in the Bill are being questioned. The public are advised to study the Bill and submit their comments on it.

Two trashy urban thrillers from the 1990's are about to turn 30 and gratefully, they feature top-flight talent! In Unlawful Entry, Kurt Russell and Madeline Stowe play a mild-mannered couple who become the focus of an increasingly unhinged police officer played by Ray Liotta – RIP. ☹ And in Single White Female, Bridget Fonda stars as fashionable Manhattanite who just broke up with her cheating boyfriend and is now seeking a new roommate in her swank apartment – enter Jennifer Jason Leigh's Hedra who at first seems nice but proves increasingly……let's say clingy. :o Both films pretty much follow a time-tested formula around this time which we also saw in movies like The Hand That Rocks the Cradle and Sleeping With the Enemy….and yes ALL of these types of thrillers were trashy but several of them were also fun.

Kenny and Ben are rejoined by their good pal Jack to discuss Best Villain 1993 and this one is packed. Single White Female won this year but is Jennifer Jason Leigh's obsessive roommate more evil than villains from Batman Returns, Unlawful Entry, A Few Good Men, and Basic Instinct? The boys try to get to the bottom of it while also talking about alternate potential nominees for this year, the "seemingly innocent stranger invades people's lives" subgenre of 90s thrillers, penguin funerals, Kurt Russell playing against type, code reds, a lengthy tangent that begins with talking about Sharon Stone on Netflix's Murderville and ends with Kenny talking about where he was the night Stephen Hawking died, and more! It's a unintentionally supersized episode and we go all out for this one.

Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Martyna Majok debuted her new play, Sanctuary City, Off-Broadway at New York Theatre Workshop in the fall of 2021. The drama follows B and G, two best friends, both undocumented immigrants. After 9/11, B's mom decides to return to her country of origin, but the U.S. is the only home B has ever known. As he decides whether to stay or leave, G might be able to offer him a solution. How much are they each willing to sacrifice?  Sanctuary City puts U.S. immigration policy and the people it affects under a microscope and humanizes the stories behind the legalese. Host Ruthie Fierberg, along with Majok and experts Katherine Benton-Cohen (Author Inventing the Immigration Problem: The Dillingham Commission & Its Legacy), Carolina Canizales (Immigration Legal Resource Center), and Christian Pinochet-Paul (Presidents' Alliance) discuss the evolution of immigration policy in the United States to present day, potential reforms to make policies more humane, where immigrants can find support, and more.  Create the change Support your local immigrant communities Create a warm and safe space at community centers Welcome them in the PTA and at school functions Become a patron of immigrant-owned businesses Assist in supporting refugees Dispel myths about immigrants (Read “The 14 Most Common Arguments Against Immigrants and Why They're Wrong”) Donate to/partner with TheDream.US Donate to the International Rescue Committee Volunteer with/Join a campaign at United We Dream, the largest immigrant youth-led network Visit the State Policies map to see the policies of colleges & universities in every state Advocate for in-state tuition for all students with your state representatives If you work at a college or university, visit Presidents' Alliance for resources, research, and tips to support international, immigrant, & undocumented students If you or someone you know is an immigrant, undocumented or otherwise, who needs support: Check your eligibility for DACA and apply (DACA toolbox) Apply for a National Scholarship or Opportunity Scholarship for higher education Seek support from United We Dream Reach out to Texas Organizing Project Contact the Workers Defense Project Find a Dream Center near you Referred to in this episode Timeline of U.S. immigration laws  What is DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals)? The third installment of our ongoing series about water in the American West, written and produced by Patricia Schwartz, looks at a largely obscured but incredibly pervasive threat to both our natural resources and our general wellbeing. One that the COVID-19 pandemic has brought even further into focus. Toxic trespass is the non-consensual infiltration of our homes, bodies and bloodstreams by harmful substances and chemicals. Its consequences are experienced disproportionately across the socio-economic and geographic spectrums, but its legacy affects us all to an increasing degree. Schwartz talks with Dr. Monica Ramirez Andreotta of the University of Arizona about her work in communities near the Environmental Protection Agency’s Superfund clean-up sites, exploring the history, and failures, of the systems we rely on to protect us from exposure.
