How we train the next generation of yoga teachers is one of the most important conversations I think we can have as an industry. This series on the podcast has covered a lot of ground talking to experts from all over the world about their thoughts on YTTs.And this, our final interview, is with a person whose expertise is in the actual training of teachers.Leslie Pearlman is on the week, and what she has to say is the best.KEY TAKEAWAYS*How many times in this series can I say this? But yoga studios train, a lot of the time, because they need teachers who work like they do. Who understand their point of view in yoga. It isn't because they need the money, necessarily.*Being a great yoga teacher does not mean you are a great teacher trainer. Leading people through trainings is a skillset that is different than being a person who is amazing at leading a class.*Transferable skills from training to be a yoga teacher to doing other things in life are something we don't talk often about. But really, the things you learn about teaching yoga are things you can take out in your real life. You will be a better communicator from teaching yoga—and that can happen in all places in your life.*Who are you being? As the yoga teacher and space holder? This is such a good question. How do you show up when you are teaching yoga? Leslie identifies this as a crucial question—and I think she is correct. We need to be intentional about who we are as a teacher, and who we are in life as well.*The phrase “listen to your body” is a setup for failure without the accompanying skills of learning how to do that skillfully.*Mentorship matters. Leslie talks about an ascension model in her studio: essentially—where are your people going to go next? And I think mentoring skillfully needs to be part of the future of our industry. Do you need a mentor? Could you be a mentor? I want to talk a lot more about this on the podcast in 2025, so stay tuned. We are going to get into it.*Hybrid teaching is the way of our future for so many things. What skillsets do you need to improve to be more comfortable in this way of teaching?RESOURCESRESOURCESWorking In Yoga WebsiteWorking In Yoga NewsletterLeslie's WebsiteFind Taylor CaseySPONSORMidwest Yoga Conference
One perspective I wanted to make sure we had during this conversation series around YTTs was the longtime trainer and studio owner. And I could not have gotten a better match than Stephanie Adams. Stephanie started SAYF, or The Sustainable Asana Yoga Foundation—and has been training folks for over a decade. Stephanie has lots of wisdom to share from her years of teaching and training, so take a listen to find out more.KEY TAKEAWAYS*What do we think about Stephanie's point about trainers needing to teach their own material? She is the first person who I have heard say this outright–and I agree with her. If you are invested enough in the act of training other yoga professionals, shouldn't we require that you make your own content? Do you agree or not? Let me know!*Pre-recorded-only trainings are a challenge for us as an industry–especially if you take this job seriously. I have now contacted ½ a dozen “online-pre-recorded” programs to ask if they would talk to me about how they measure the outcomes and skillsets of their students, and while I came close, nobody actually would speak with me. *Spending time training together is a little bit of magic, let's just say that now. And I sometimes think we don't appreciate what Stephanie calls a “life pattern interrupt” can do for the nervous system, the brain, and the heart. We do that, friends. In fact, it might be the best thing we do when we offer those sorts of experiences to other people.*This is another great point Stephanie made, which is an offshoot of what I have been saying for this whole series. There is not a ton of money to be made in studios when we train. And a lot of our experienced trainers have moved on to other parts of the profession because they are more financially lucrative. This is a shame. We need our best and brightest training for the next generation of yoga pros–don't you think?*Teaching online is a new skill set we didn't need to train folks for prior to 2020. We need to have MUCH more discussion about what the best practices are for yoga teaching online, and I am looking forward to it in the future.RESOURCESWorking In Yoga WebsiteWorking In Yoga NewsletterSAYF WebsiteFind Taylor CaseySPONSORMidwest Yoga Conference

There is so much to dive into in regards to teacher trainings. How long do we train for? Is our system working for us? Are teacher training and deeper learning the same thing?Should I run a “social justice” focused teacher training?Anjali and I get into it all. Take a listen.KEY TAKEAWAYS*Training is a huge responsibility within the industry. And we often have challenges that we need to address when we decide to run teacher training. I have said this before on this series, but many times, people train because they are looking for qualified candidates to work at their studio. Are these ideal conditions for training? I don't know, but it certainly isn't the “my yoga studio can't make it without training” story we are often telling amongst ourselves.*I am SO glad Anjali brought this up. Training yoga teachers and deepening your knowledge of yoga are not the same thing. They should not be in the same program. We need to offer a diverse menu of yoga knowledge enhancement options in our yoga studios–not just only group classes and YTTs. I cannot say this enough times.*So Anjali said something that I want to highlight. It is this idea that a deep yoga practice is something you should “enjoy”. She is right, a lot of yoga is groundbreaking and uncomfortable. While the changes you create as a result of a deep yoga practice can be highly beneficial and enjoyable, the process is hard. And we should be saying anything different.*Hey friends. I know saying things like “social justice” is a great way for you to attract certain people to your doorstep. But there is disrespect at best, and danger at worst when we use the phrase social justice like a marketing term. People deserve better. The black, queer, and disabled communities we support deserve better. Please stop. Thank you so much.*There is no checklist that makes you a good white person in yoga. I am sorry if that is news. But the willingness to have discussions, unpack your own privilege, and as Anjali asks “what else are you doing?” is a great place to start.*This is another one of the things this series has mentioned constantly. Mentorship. If you are an experienced teacher please consider how you can mentor the next generation of yoga teachers so they can have a nurturing and supportive environment to learn the skillset of teaching yoga.RESOURCESWorking In Yoga WebsiteWorking In Yoga NewsletterAnjali's WebsiteFind Taylor CaseySPONSORMidwest Yoga Conference

I get asked on almost a daily basis for recommendations for yoga teacher training programs. You would think that after 25 years in yoga, I would have some, but the truth is very different. Yoga teacher training programs vary widely, change regularly, and come with a host of problems. On this episode with my friend and colleague, Michelle Lehrman, we discuss some of the biggest issues with YTTs, including forcing participants to make and accept hands-on adjustments, shaming people who hold different opinions or do things differently, and forcing a one-way approach to this ancient, adaptable practice. Michelle Lehrman is a certified 200-hour and trauma-informed yoga instructor who has been teaching in New York City since 2016. She currently teaches at Crunch (yoga and spin), Sacred Space Astoria, and Lionheart Health, and works with private clients. I met Michelle when she participated in the Three and a Half Acres Yoga Trauma-Informed Yoga Teacher Training a 20-hour supplemental training for teachers with a 200 + hour yoga teacher certification. This training hopes to undo some of the damage caused by many YTTs and offer a safer approach to teaching yoga. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Your support is deeply appreciated! Whenever people ask me what studio to check out in Austin, Texas, I always recommend Practice Yoga on the East side. Rey Cardenas is the co-founder of Practice which recently celebrated it's 10 year anniversary. If you follow Rey or Practice on Instagram, you'll see he shares a lot about a unique take on philosophy from Rudolf Steiner, that I haven't seen from other yoga teachers. We talk about: - Rey's journey of co-founding a yoga studio in Austin, Texas, after facing challenges with his previous teaching position. Rey shared his experience of transitioning from being a professional poker player to becoming a yoga teacher and the process of finding a location for his studio. - The process of opening a yoga studio, including finding a vacant building, partnering with someone who had complementary skills, utilizing social media marketing, creating memes(!) and choosing a donation-based model. - Rey's process of finding a more balanced approach to yoga philosophy, moving away from an indulgent sort of philosophy towards a more grounded perspective that Rey found in Rudolf Steiner's work. - How to integrate different perspectives and practices into yoga teachings. They also explored the connection between Western and Eastern spirituality and the importance of awakening the chakras. - Rey gives a great introduction to the teachings of Rudolf Steiner, including his embodiment system, and the importance of the thought realm in human freedom. They also discussed how these concepts can be integrated into yoga and are integrated into the teacher trainings at Practice Yoga in Austin. The Connected Yoga Teacher Podcast 319: Do I Need Another Yoga Training? with Shannon Crow Description: It is a common trend among yoga teachers to take one yoga teacher training (YTT) program after another. But is it really necessary and when should you consider taking another YTT? Shannon Crow explores some of the main reasons yoga teachers sign up for YTTs. There are several reasons why yoga teachers take YTTs. Continuing education is important, but for many yoga teachers, it is often a case of wanting to get more students, make more income, be offered more teaching opportunities, and deepen their expertise in a speciality. Shannon dives into why a YTT may not be the right course of action in some cases, and when it does add value. She also touches on the pyramid scheme of YTTs and some things to watch out for before signing up. This is the perfect episode to listen to if you are considering signing up for another YTT - give this a listen and ask yourself if you really need another yoga training or if there's something else that would help you achieve the results you are looking for instead. Key Takeaways: [2:25] It's common for yoga teachers to take many yoga trainings, but this may not be necessary! [4:44] Do you really need another yoga teacher training right now? Shannon shares a question she asked in The Connected Yoga Teacher Facebook Group. [6:15] Shannon explores the first reason people have for signing up for another YTT - to get more students in their classes or increase their income - and what you could do instead. [8:22] Another reason yoga teachers cite for taking another YTT is they want to be recognized as more of an expert or they want more teaching opportunities. [10:00] Shannon gives a shout out to sponsors, OfferingTree and Pelvic Health Professionals. [12:36] Yoga teachers often take a YTT to upgrade their skills or education to teach specific styles of yoga or a specific population. [13:27] There are also yoga teachers who sign up for YTTs for the community it offers. [13:51] What if you waited to make some profit and then use that profit to invest in your next yoga teacher training or continuing education course? [14:52] Shannon addresses something she has observed in the yoga industry - pressuring yoga teachers to "invest" in continuing education, mentorship, or coaching. [17:26] You can wait to make a profit in your yoga business first before signing up for the next course or training. The Connected Yoga Teacher Podcast 318: Questions to Ask Before Any YTT with Shannon Crow Description: Continuing education is an important part of your professional development as a yoga teacher but with a multitude of yoga teacher training (YTT) programs available, it is important to pick the right one. Shannon Crow shares some of the questions she asks before signing up for a YTT. Shannon has had the experience of going from one YTT to the next and this is something that you may experience if you are a newer yoga teacher. While it is important to build the necessary skills to teach, we need to also be aware of where we are investing our time, energy, and money. Shannon recommends asking questions about the YTT before signing up. Some things to consider include the accessibility and inclusion of the program, the yoga school's stance on cultural appropriation, and their values. She also invites you to ask questions about the lead trainers' experience, their position on medicine and science, religion and spirituality and anything else that may be important for you. The important thing is to ensure that the yoga teacher training you choose is aligned with your values. Key Takeaways: [1:40] Continuing education is an important part of your professional development as a yoga teacher but there are some hard truths we should be aware of before signing up for the next yoga teacher training. [2:31] Shannon shares her personal experience with yoga teacher trainings and continuing education. [7:14] Shannon shares some questions she would ask if she were signing up for a yoga teacher training today. [10:13] Shannon gives a shout out of thanks to sponsors, OfferingTree and Pelvic Health Professionals. [12:30] Shannon talks about how she ended up in a yoga teacher training where the lead teacher talked about aliens instead of yoga sutras! [13:33] Some other questions Shannon would ask include their yoga philosophy for the trainings and scope of practice. [14:28] Shannon highlights some other questions you might be interested in asking a yoga school or yoga teacher training program before you sign up. [16:29] It can also be helpful to ask to speak with past graduates and lead trainers of a yoga teacher training to see if it is a good fit for you. [19:21] It's important to ensure that the yoga teacher training you choose is aligned with your values. Questions to Ask Before Any Yoga Teacher Training Do you teach how to make yoga accessible? What are your thoughts on cultural appropriation? Do you have a diverse group of teachers? How are you paying your teachers and assistants? What do you do to protect students from abuse of power? Can I look over your ethics, values, and philosophy statements? What are your thoughts on social justice? Do you and your teachers share their pronouns? Is your business model built on training more and more yoga teachers? What is your diversity, equity and inclusion policy? Does your yoga school encourage referrals to medical professionals or do you think science isn't real? Are you going to talk about your belief in aliens instead of the yoga sutras during lecture? What yoga texts do you refer to for yoga philosophy? May I see the bibliography section of your manual? What do you teach about scope of practice? How do you ensure that all trainers and teachers are not talking about food and nutrition? What is your policy on scholarships, payment plans and refunds? What are your thoughts on religion and spirituality with regards to yoga? What is the schedule like in this YTT? Will I be reaching the point of exhaustion? Do you believe in “breaking people down” emotionally or physically in a YTT? Has your yoga lineage had any reported (or unreported) abuse? Do you have training with regards to trauma and is this incorporated into your YTT? How can I talk with past graduates and lead trainers of your YTT? How many YTTs have you led and how long have you been teaching yoga? What does your YTT offer with regards to business education? Where can I view the syllabus for the training? How many contact hours are in the training? How much practice teach time is in the training? "If I was going to sign up for a yoga teacher training today, I would be asking a lot of questions." "Make sure you're in a training where you can ask questions and question what is being taught in that moment." "Make sure really that the yoga teacher training that you choose is in alignment with your values." "Do not be afraid to ask a lot of questions before you sign up and you invest your time and your money. And also don't be afraid to speak up while you're there."

In connecting with teachers and hearing their stories, it's often the case that yoga teachers find their way to the yoga business after a foray in a previous life and career. Sometimes when we embark on our career journeys, we find that the destination was sure was ours, was actually just the beginning and that's true for the incredible Colynn Vosbourgh. Colynn's teachings are a fusion of her education and experiences in life, the medical field, conscious community and personal development work. She creates and holds space that she's dubbed queer friendly, age friendly, body friendly and completely inclusive. We hear about Colynn's career path and success in healthcare, how she received acceptance to medical school and signed up for her first YTT in the same weekend and how all the twists and turns in life and her career have led her to the success she's found in leading YTTs and Business Coaching for Yoga Teachers from her new home in Costa Rica. She tells it like it is and generously shares from her successes, but also from the lessons she's learned along the way. You won't want to miss this episode! The Connected Yoga Teacher Podcast 299: Yoga for Menopause with Niamh Daly Description: About half the world's population experiences menopause at some point in their lives, yet it is still not very well understood and people at this stage of their life may not get the support they need. Niamh Daly fills in some of the gaps we may have in our understanding and knowledge of menopause. Niamh teaches and supports women in navigating life changes, especially menopause, whether medically, surgically, prematurely or naturally induced, through adapted yoga and nutrition. She trains yoga teachers worldwide to understand menopause and the stages immediately preceding, and after, and how much support they can give through additions to, and enhancements of the canon of yoga. As yoga teachers who are working with people who are in this peri, menopausal, menopause, postmenopausal phase, we need to understand how we can better support them. Niamh explains the fluctuating nature of peri-menopause, how nutrition and exercise requirements may change for people at this stage, and why yoga is beneficial for them. She also questions why prenatal yoga and pregnancy is covered in many YTTs but not any of the menopausal stages, despite that being something more relevant and applicable to many people. Key Takeaways: [3:29] Shannon introduces her guest for this episode - Niamh Daly. [7:53] What does Niamh do and who does she do it for? [10:52] How do we know when we or our students are in the perimenopause stage? Niamh explains that there is actually a stage before perimenopause that isn't often talked about. [16:50] People in the late reproductive stage can have symptoms that mimic perimenopause or even conditions related to thyroid function. How can people get a definitive answer about what is really causing the changes in their body? [19:58] Shannon pops in with a snippet of a conversation she had with Ashley Hagen about OfferingTree. [23:51] How does yoga help with perimenopause? [30:29] Shannon and Niamh discuss the research supporting the idea that yoga is beneficial for menopause. [32:17] There is a huge lack of education around this topic despite the fact that half the population goes through menopause and a large number of yoga teachers are also in this demographic. [33:38] Where can yoga teachers learn more about yoga for menopause and how to better serve this segment of the population? [38:03] Niamh shares a bit more about health at every size and how that impacts perimenopause. [43:02] Language is also a big part of the education that Niamh offers. [44:36] Reach out to Niamh to connect and learn more. [45:52] Continue the conversation! Shannon shares some of her key takeaways - what are yours? Quotes from this episode: "There has been research in yoga for serotonin, yoga for oxytocin, yoga for bones, yoga for heart health, yoga for brain health, yoga for sleep, all of which coming together, create a very convincing pool of evidence to support the use of yoga to help women through menopause." "Women spend more time in the perimenopausal transition and post menopausal then they do pregnant and yet there are no first line yoga teacher trainings that really even mention menopause in the training." "I'm really in the business of trying to help women befriend their changes and their body through menopause and beyond and before menopause." "We need to learn to embrace the changes because otherwise, we're fighting ourselves till the day we die."
Why are so many yoga teachers doing this? Learning Breathwork? Well… The study of breath is its own specialization, and one of the 8 limbs of yoga, known as Pranayama. Pranayama is the scientific study of how energy is impacted by the breath. ✨The study of breath is its own specialization and yoga teachers are moving away from posture only embodiment of the practice and coming back to the fundamentals of the practice - breath. ✨Breathwork helps deepen the understanding of energy centers and activation. Pressure points, somatic releases, and the breath all work together for impactful healing. So why do yoga schools skip this fundamental education? It's easier to get people in and out of trainings and be the fast fashion of YTTs rather than truly study something from the roots. This takes time, dedication, and commitment. _____________________ ▲ Free Playground for mystics: https://tinyurl.com/playground222 ▲Become a certified breathwork facilitator https://www.flowbreathworktraining.com
For UK based yoga teachers the answer to this may surprise you – NONE! Yoga is not regulated by the UK government, not only that there is no legal requirement to have public liability insurance to teach. So there are really no qualifications that you need to be a UK Yoga Teacher, from a legal point of view. Now I'm not suggesting for one minute that you just go out tomorrow and start teaching, leave out the giant step of training and what I believe to be the essential step of having insurance. But it's worth noting that this self-regulating (as it is un-regulated) world that is yoga teacher training is totally made up! This isn't a bad thing actually. I think the pros greatly out way the cons, but it can make it tricky navigating how and who we should train with. And it doesn't get much easier to navigate from a trainer's perspective. There's not a one-size-fits-all in terms of education (that's education full stop). It is a good thing that there are many ways to train to be a yoga teacher, this choice means you can find the right course and trainer for you. Advice for yoga trainers! And if you're a trainer here are some truths: in-person isn't better than online, it's just different; 3-to-4-week intensive YTTs are not bad, they're just one way into the profession that really works for some; and your course is totally unique as it's created by you, which is why there is room for us all. The reality is nobody cares how long you've trained for, how, and who with. The only person who cares about this is you, so focus on what will work for you. Avoid getting stuck in ‘training procrastination' once you're trained just get out and teach! Don't forget the power of a specialism, such as pregnancy or yin yoga, and these shorter specialist trainings can be a great doorway into teaching yoga for the right person. Work with me? I've been a trainer for over 6 years now, and you can train online with me in pregnancy, postnatal and yin-yoga, check out all the courses here - https://amy-yoga.com/yoga-teacher-training/ And If you've taken onboard my massive hint at the end of this episode that perhaps it's not more training you need but support in running your business, then head over to https://amy-yoga.com/prosperous-yogini-programme/ to find out how we can work together. The Connected Yoga Teacher Podcast 269: Yoga Philosophy & Colonialism with Shyam Ranganathan Description: As yoga teachers, we learn a little bit about yoga philosophy in our YTTs, but yoga philosophy is much more than just the 8 limbs, or the brief summary we may have come across in our studies. Dr. Shyam Ranganathan (he/him) is an expert in yoga philosophy and in this episode, he shares more about this topic, as well as how colonialism has influenced what we understand as yoga philosophy. Dr. Shyam Ranganathan is the founder of Yoga Philosophy, and a field-changing researcher on the study and translation of philosophy, especially South Asian philosophy and Yoga. He holds an MA in South Asian Studies, and an MA and PhD in philosophy, and is a member of the Department of Philosophy, and York Center for Asian Research, York University, Toronto. Shyam is a translator of the Yoga Sūtra, and founded his organization, Yoga Philosophy, to provide support for those interested in answering the question - What makes something yoga? Shyam explains how learning about philosophy helps us to get along and why not all opinions are equally good or right. He also shares more about how Europeans misunderstood things when they studied the communities they colonized and how that showed up in the yoga sutras and how they are translated. This continues to influence how yoga is taught and practiced in the world, today, especially in the West. He also gives us insight about the yamas and social justice, choices and responsibility, ahimsa, dharma, self-governing and Ishvara Pranidhana. This is a really rich conversation that all of us can learn from. Key Takeaways: [3:48] Shannon introduces her guest for this episode - Shyam Ranganathan. [6:45] Shyam shares his pronouns and explains how to pronounce his name. [7:36] What does Shyam do and who does he do it for? [8:46] What got Shyam interested in the work of studying philosophy? [10:48] Shyam was born in Toronto, yet felt that he didn't fit in. He talks a bit about that experience. [13:00] Shyam believes that philosophy enabled him to get along with people without having to agree with them. [15:06] There are several polarizing issues in the world right now. Shyam highlights the fact that just because we are okay with disagreement doesn't mean there are no right answers. [16:07] Where did Shyam's journey with yoga philosophy start? [22:14] Shyam clarifies the role and impact of colonization in the interpretation of yoga sutras. [31:49] Shyam shares an example of the two different ways of relating to what you contemplate. [37:00] Shannon and Shyam discuss the linguistic model of thought and how that has influenced different situations and scenarios in history and in the present day. [40:26] Why is it not yoga when we go in and try to make other people conform to our systems? [44:08] How does the idea of choice and responsibility connect to the eight limbs? [49:18] Shannon gives a shout out to OfferingTree. [51:04] One of the three kriyas is ishvara pranidhana. Shyam unpacks what this really refers to. [56:10] What are the other two kriyas? [58:43] How is yoga connected to social justice? What do the niyamas have to do with social justice? [64:48Shyam explains that fear is trauma and it's the result of a bad decision based on people's experiences. [67:41] Where do the eight limbs of yoga fit in? [72:21] What does Shyam mean when he talks about sovereignty? [76:51] Find out more about Shyam and his work around yoga philosophy on his website. [77:29] What is something in terms of yoga and philosophy that really has Shyam's interest right now? [80:00] Shannon shares her key takeaways from this interview with Shyam. What were yours? Quotes from this episode: "What I loved about philosophy immediately was that it was a way to get along with people without having to agree." "Just because we're okay with disagreement doesn't mean that there are no right answers. Disagreement doesn't mean that everybody's opinion is equally good." "The actual practice of yoga is something more basic and the eight limbs are there to help you practice. " "After that colonial moment, people have to identify with imposed religious identities in order to find a place in a colonized world and that's where we are today." "Whereas the external world (nature) can be explained in terms of causality, persons have to understand themselves in terms of choice and responsibility." "When you meet up with people who advocate violence, you have to appreciate that that's a result of trauma." "There's no yoga practice that isn't informed by trauma."

In 1969, Swami Vishnudevananda pioneered what has become a life transition ritual for the GenX and Millennial precariat: the Yoga Teacher Training (YTT) Programme. He was a cult leader rapist who thought yoga would help the world understand messages sent by UFOs. Not exactly confidence-inspiring.Not every YTT programme is bad—today's bonus host Matthew has worked in some good ones for over a decade. But on the whole, we're talking about an industry that has graduated up to 500K ppl over 50 years through a pseudo-educational process that has greased the epistemological pipeline towards conspirituality.YTTs are unregulated by any academic or professional consensus. They are driven by the anxious charisma of urban yoga studio entrepreneurs who need to sell big-ticket products to counter the rising overheads of the gentrification they're helping to drive. Their curricula offers a pastiche of uncited resources. They pad contact hours with sermons and meditation sessions. The typical YTT training manual is an unironic postmodern meat-grinder in which Iron Age philosophy and high school anatomy are blended with quotes from Carl Jung and Rumi. As an example, Matthew looks at a Jivamukti Yoga School manual from a 2007 training hosted at Omega Institute.Again: not all YTTs are bad, or lead to QAnon. But the ritual and charismatic pedagogy that most offer has a lot in common with the sacrament of redpilling—albeit more socially acceptable and aspirational. Conspirituality went viral in 2020. It's time to ask whether the YTT industry compromised a culture's immunity to it.Notes:Hello, YogAnon! This week's epsiode I connect with Chrissie, she's spent the last five years traveling around the world teaching on different YTTS in India, studios in the Uk from the practice in Bali, retreats in South Africa and Europe. We discuss the polarity that practice brings, the yearning for consciousness, the heartfelt joy of experiencing the womb of silence, even though we often self-sabotage when we are about to enter this state, due to the internal discomfort that our practice will invoke in us, asking us to expand and move through our limitations. There are many paths but they all lead to one destination. In this conversation we explore how deepening our relationship to rest, silence, nature, and practice helps you to live in alignment with Dharma, through self-inquiry, overcoming resistance and the internal obstacles that prevent us from trusting our intuition, expressing the truth and wholeness of who we really are. It is in the moment we experience contrast, we know to move forward; a part of us has to die, to help us live from wholeness, joy, as we create a life reflective of our heart's deepest desires. Welcome to this week on Working In Yoga! This week I am welcoming my friend Allison Rissel onto the podcast to chat about all things COVID and yoga. Allison runs 200 and 300 hour YTTs in Colorado, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Montana. The is also the founder of three yoga conferences North Dakota Yoga Conference and the 403 Yoga Conference AND launched a yoga conference just for yoga teachers this year called Yoga Teacher Conf. Allison and I have known each other for a bit and we get immediately to chatting about the challenges of COVID for our businesses, what we like about online, what we don't, and she says something super important about that. There in fact IS a huge difference between good online yoga teaching and the rest of it. (I am even trying to convince her to help me write some industry best practices around yoga teaching online, cuz wow do we need them). So take a listen to our chat--I love how Allison offers us some real talk on struggles and successes. Find her and all of her stuff on www.yogateacherconf.com or follow her on IG @yogateacherconf
The Connected Yoga Teacher Podcast 228: How to Personalize Zoom Yoga with Arundhati Baitmangalkar Description: Are you teaching yoga online and wondering how to make your classes more personalized, create more connection with your students, and continue building that sense of community - from behind a screen? Arundhati Baitmangalkar has some insights about how to personalize yoga classes on Zoom, and create connections with students in yoga teacher trainings. Arundhati is the founder of Aham Yoga, a full-service yoga studio, and Bollyworks, a part-time Bollywood dance studio, in Redmond, WA. Born and raised in India, Arundhati came to yoga after nearly a decade of teaching dance, and started teaching yoga in 2006. She is trained in vinyasa and hatha styles of yoga from renowned yoga masters, and is one of the leading yoga teachers in her area. Arundhati represents a great balance of classical and modern yoga, and in addition to yoga classes, she offers yoga teacher trainings and workshops. She also runs a blog, YouTube channel, hosts the Let's Talk Yoga podcast, and was voted one of the top 20 yoga teachers of color to watch out for in 2020 by YogaWalla. Shannon and Arundhati discuss some simple strategies to connect and engage with students, like using their names and letting them ask questions. Arundhati also shares some tips on how to create the best experience possible for your YTT students, and the tools she uses to enhance teaching online. "[For online YTTs], make sure your spaces are well-lit, make sure you can provide multiple angles if possible." "I tell the trainees and even the students who come to class, you have to take more responsibility for your practice." "When we plan these trainings, we have to keep extra time for those breakout rooms because I feel like that's where you really get your hands-on experience." "It's about accepting the moment, even if that moment is unpleasant."

The Connected Yoga Teacher Podcast 224: 8 Yoga Business Lessons with Manu Molina de la Torre Description: Being a yoga entrepreneur can be tough. Our typical YTTs focus more on how to teach asana and yoga philosophy, but hardly cover anything about what it really means to run a sustainable yoga business. Manu Molina de la Torre has 8 important lessons to share about things he has learned in starting his yoga business. Manu is a yoga teacher, a personal trainer and a coach in Andalusia, Spain. Manu found yoga as a teenager, and became a yoga teacher in 2010. After working for different yoga and fitness studios, Manu decided to start his own yoga business, only to find he lacked the business skills necessary. He invested in business training for himself, and realized that this knowledge could help other yoga teachers in their businesses too. Today, Manu helps yoga & wellness professionals take actionable steps toward their vision as entrepreneurs through 1:1 coaching calls, both online and in-person. He coaches in English and Spanish, and also hosts the Emprendedores del Yoga Podcast in Spanish. In this interview, Manu shares his 8 biggest lessons and tips for yoga teachers on their entrepreneurial journey. He has some great insights that would be helpful for newer yoga teachers who are just getting started in their yoga business, as well as some things every yoga teacher should know regardless of where they are in their entrepreneurship journey. Key Takeaways: [7:29] Shannon introduces her guest for this episode - Manu Molina de la Torre. [9:33] How did Manu get started on his yoga journey, and how did he start working with yoga teachers? [17:25] In all of Manu's yoga teacher trainings and fitness trainings, there wasn't much taught about running a business. [19:10] What is the first lesson Manu learned in business? [22:27] What is a good amount to have saved up before starting on the journey of becoming a yoga entrepreneur? [23:13] It's important to keep track of expenses and stay on top of your finances. Having a separate bank account, or tracking expenses on a spreadsheet can help. [24:10] Manu's next tip is to niche down and to diversify your sources of income. [27:09] How can a yoga teacher niche down and diversify at the same time? [29:50] Niching down and specializing can feel hard and scary, but it is effective and worth it! [31:17] Manu's third tip is to put yourself out there. [34:57] Lesson #4: Be willing to listen to people's problems. [40:05] Lesson #5 is to stay open to change. [42:37] Manu's sixth lesson is about mindset. Reframe your mindset about mistakes - there are no mistakes, only lessons learned. [46:41] The next lesson Manu shares is to just do it, despite the fear. [50:21] The last lesson is the most important one - Educate yourself in different aspects of business. [53:32] Shannon summarizes the eight lessons Manu has shared. [54:11] Manu shares some of his final thoughts for yoga entrepreneurs. The Connected Yoga Teacher Podcast 192: Everyone Has a Pelvic Floor with Shannon Crow Description: Was the pelvic floor ever covered in any of your yoga teacher training, anatomy courses, or if you have had children, as a part of pre- and post-natal education? Yet, the pelvis is one of the most important parts of our bodies, and also a very misunderstood and often neglected part of the body. People often relate pelvic health and function to women, childbearing, or other similar functions, but the truth is, whether you are male, female, non-binary or any other gender, you have a pelvic floor! As with any other body part, it is important for us to know what this part of our body does for us, and how we can protect and ensure it is healthy and working well. In fact, pelvic health is very much related to how the body moves, and so many things that our everyday bodies are dealing with are also related to pelvic health. How does this impact us as yoga teachers and yoga practitioners? Shannon shares more about the five superpowers of the pelvic floor and helps us understand its importance in our movement, and general well-being. She also highlights some of the common pelvic health issues you may encounter, as well as how yoga can help. The Connected Yoga Teacher Podcast 187: How to Choose a Yoga Teacher Training with Cecily Milne Description: The first big step that we often take in our journey to become yoga teachers is our Yoga Teacher Training (YTT), and in many ways, much of how we teach is influenced by our YTT experiences. However, not all YTTs are created equal, and some are better than others. Cecily Milne published the blogpost “10 ways to make your yoga teacher training suck less”, and has some pointers on what makes a good YTT. Cecily Milne is the Founder of Yoga Detour™, which began as a 200HR program, but has evolved since then. Today, Cecily focuses on education within the yoga and movement teaching community, and hopes to provide other professionals in this space with the resources she wishes she had access to as a teacher and business owner. She offers online learning courses as well as in-person training to support others and help them grow as yoga teachers and movement educators. What sets a great YTT apart from the rest? Shannon and Cecily dig into why many teacher training programs today fail to set trainees up for success, and the top lessons Cecily learned from running her own 200hr TT. Cecily also highlights the importance of diversity and representation teacher trainings, teaching skills and evaluations, and the business aspect of running YTTs. Ultimately, choosing a YTT is all about finding the right fit between the student and the school. Whether you are brand new to yoga and are thinking about a YTT, or if you are wondering how to put an amazing YTT together, this episode is full of valuable insights. [21:18] What are some questions we should be asking when considering a yoga potential teacher training? [23:41] How can we bring up the topic of race and representation in a yoga teacher training? [25:00] Cecily highlights some other questions to ask when considering a yoga teacher training, particularly around the business aspects of being a yoga teacher. [32:36] As much as those taking the training programs, those offering the training programs need to ask themselves why they are providing that program and who it is for. [33:48] Shannon and Cecily discuss where being a part of Yoga Alliance ties in with yoga teacher trainings. [35:29] Accountability should be a big part of a yoga teacher training. Cecily shares how she helps teachers with learning to teach. [39:42] Cecily has had some great success with getting her students record themselves teaching. [41:40] How can teachers deal with the privacy aspect and getting consent from their students to record? [43:10] It is important for students to know what their needs and priorities are in choosing a yoga teacher training, and to find a school that caters to that and is a good fit. [44:08] Shannon recommends that you talk to previous graduates from the yoga school or training program you are considering. In the conversations I have with colleagues about yoga teacher trainings the focus is almost always centered on the idea that 200 hours is not enough time to produce high quality baseline yoga teachers. I brought this question to my friend and teacher Jules Mitchell to get her opinion and very quickly our conversation veered from the serious but simple question, “How many hours of training should foundational YTTs have?” to the much more complex questions of, “Who gets to have the power to decide what makes a good yoga teacher?” and “If we raise the standards to make ‘better' yoga teachers what communities get left further behind with less access to yoga than they already have?” Spoiler alert: We came up with almost no clear answers to these questions, but I think it is important for us to have these conversations publicly and often. If you don't already know Jules, she is a San Francisco based yoga teacher, educator and massage therapist. She blends the tradition of yoga with her extensive study in biomechanics to help teachers develop their craft and empower them with education. She regularly contributes to yoga teacher training programs and leads workshops worldwide, balancing the somatic aspects of yoga with the most current exercise science. Check out our previous interview to get to know more about Jules and the way she incorporates her knowledge of biomechanics into her teaching in Episode #9, right here! In this episode you'll hear: What Jules thinks is working well in the yoga teacher training culture. A conversation about the current standards yoga trainings follow and how they are (or are not) are serving teachers and their students well. Some thoughts about Yoga Alliance and whether or not yoga might be served by having an actual regulating body. 076: Designing A Yoga Teacher Training with Rachel Scott Think back to your first 200-hour yoga teacher training. What was it like? Did it fit your learning style? What do you wish was included? If you've given these questions some thought perhaps designing and teaching yoga teacher training is a path for you. Shannon came across Rachel Scott in a serendipitous-like fashion. Rachel had shared photos on the Pixabay (a free image-sharing site), and Shannon used one for her online 5-Day Content Creation Challenge. Noticing that Rachel was a yoga teacher, Shannon clicked on the link to Rachel's site. Discovering that Rachel did consultation work with yoga teachers interested in designing their own YTT, (a topic Shannon wanted to cover on the show), Shannon took the opportunity to invite Rachel on the podcast as a guest. Rachel is an educational designer and teacher whose mission is to support yoga teachers and studios to create their own excellently crafted and delivered teacher trainings. She has worked in education for nearly twenty years and led the Teachers College at one of Canada's largest yoga studios for more than seven. 061: Too Many Yoga Teachers? with Kimma Stark When Shannon read Kimma Stark's thought-provoking blog post: What the World Needs Now is NOT ANOTHER YOGA TEACHER, she knew she wanted her on The Connected Yoga Teacher to share her perspective. Kimma, with great love and respect for those who own and/or manage yoga studios, questions the churning out of yoga teachers through the yoga studios who provide trainings in order to make ends meet. With Kimma's experience managing four different studios she knows how difficult it is to create a business model that will ensure a studio's financial success. What she questions is the effect these trainings can have on the industry, the teachers and the students. Shannon and Kimma also discuss the limitations of a 200-hour yoga teacher training, yogi trainings versus YTTs, the importance of always learning and finding inspiration as an established yoga teacher, embodying your teachings and much more. For Kimma, teaching yoga is her full-time profession and says it has been “most rewarding, challenging, and meaningful work she has ever done.” She was intrigued by yoga from her very first experience, trying a hot yoga class in 2000. She moved on toward traditional formats and began teaching in 2008. Her teachings are grounded in yoga philosophy, anatomy and physiology. She teaches private and group classes in Gentle Flow Vinyasa, Hatha, Yin, Restorative, Prenatal, and Kids Yoga classes along with Thai Massage in Cascais, Portugal. She has an Essential Elements retreat planned in Portugal for June 2018. 9:40 Kimma's early experience with yoga 13:30 Kimma's first teacher trainings 15:30 Kimma's early career in the high-paced corporate world of marketing and advertising 17:10 What led Kimma to write her article: What the World Needs Now is NOT ANOTHER YOGA TEACHER 20:20 Kimma's experience as studio manager and the business model of offering yoga teacher trainings as a way to make ends meet 22:45 Alternate trainings such as yogi trainings for those interested in delving into yoga but not necessarily teaching and the pressure to teach coming out of your first YTT 26:05 Kimma's move to Portugal and travels to Thailand and how teaching yoga can be a nomadic lifestyle 29:45 On continually learning and evolving as a yoga teacher and how students can sense when yoga teachers are embodying the yoga they teach 31:18 What 200-hour YTT Kimma would recommend 33:12 Other considerations when choosing a yoga teacher training and approaching yoga with an understanding of the light and dark (the yin and yang) 35:00 Why Kimma feels a 200-hour YTT is not enough 37:30 What would Kimma tell aspiring yoga teachers who have obstacles, such as distance and time, about taking a yoga teacher training and why Kimma has a concern with online training when starting out 39:44 The effect of studios offering yoga teacher trainings to make ends meet instead of offering unique teachings and the idea that teaching yoga is a service 44:30 Kimma's advice to teachers wanting to teach full-time 46:28 How to contact Kimma and her upcoming retreats 49:18 Shannon's closing thoughts and key takeaways Links Flowing Lotus Website Flowing Lotus Yoga on Facebook Kimma Stark's Resumé Kimma's article: What the World Needs Now is NOT ANOTHER YOGA TEACHER Frog Lotus International Yoga Teacher Training Programs Fiverr- Freelance Services The Connected Teacher Facebook Group Follow The Connected Teacher on Youtube Book a Consultation Call with Shannon Accessible Yoga Conference in Toronto June 22nd-24th, 2018 Gratitude to our Sponsor Schedulicity
