So that was a lot of fun last time back in, aired October 4, 2021. We have Marty Strong with us. Marty, how're you doing today? Marty Strong  00:19 Doing pretty good, Brett. Brett Gilliland  00:20 Good, well it's good to be with you and you know what I'm fired up about today is we're going to talk about this new book you got coming out here. It's called "Be Visionary," and so when you gotta name Visionary Wealth Advisors of your company, and you got a guy with a book called "Be Visionary," it's just made as a recipe for success today isn't it? Marty Strong  00:39 Yeah, it's like a marriage. Think of matchmaking, matchmaking in heaven! Brett Gilliland  00:43 That's right, right here today on The Circuit of Success. Well, those people that did not get to dial in in October of 2021, last time we spoke, Marty is a retired Navy SEAL officer and combat veteran. He's a novelist, a practicing CEO, a chief strategy officer, you've got your other book "Be Nimble," how the creative Navy SEAL mindset wins on the battlefield and in business. And in this book, as we just mentioned, "Be Visionary: Strategic Leadership in the Age of Optimization" is coming out January of 2023. I know you're a thought leader, and you're talking all over the world and doing things and helping tons of people. So thanks for being with us. But if you could maybe just give us again, a little background who Marty Strong is, and what continues to make you the man you are today. Marty Strong  01:31 Okay, well, I'm from the humble state of Nebraska. My parents were, I guess, farm kids, for the most part, my dad was definitely a depression era farm, farm kid, large family, etc. So they had a, they both had a very, very strong work ethic, a real blue collar approach, even though my dad ended up getting a degree later on, and eventually spending 30 years working for the government thing, he was the deputy director of Walter Reed, when he retired, he never, you know, he never left that early part of his life. And that's what he imparted to me, my brothers and sisters, this kind of, you know, return the tool in better condition than you borrowed it, you know, be polite, a lot of the Golden Rule kind of application, but very strictly applied, and take care of things that you've been given and appreciate the people that are helping you and the people around you. So that essentially was my value system. And that's what I walked into the Navy in the mid 70s with and kind of stumbled into the SEAL team selection process, and ended up spending 20 years in that business, so that, in that role. Brett Gilliland  02:44 Traveled the world chasing bad guys in that role, man, and appreciate and thankful for your service, you guys are amazing at what you do. So we can talk about a lot of stuff today, but one of the things I want to talk about when we spoke, you know, almost a year ago, the world was still, you know, somewhat shut down, obviously was kind of opening back up. Marty Strong has an accomplished leadership career spanning four decades. He worked his way from enlisted SEAL Team member to the SEAL Officer corps, retiring with twenty years service and as a decorated retired Navy SEAL officer who led 36 successful combat missions. After leaving military service Marty spent seven years as a successful investment advisor with UBS before transitioning into executive management for a billion-dollar-a-year defense contracting company. Today, he is the CEO of a Healthcare Company. Before relocating to Indianapolis in 2017, Kelli lived in Los Angeles, CA, working as Director of Sales & Marketing for two venture-backed media companies, HipHopDX and Blavity. She spent the majority of her career in New York, running an event and experiential marketing agency working for brands like Google, HP, Microsoft, Lipton/Brisk, Redbull, Samsung, and Akai. Don co-founded Allos in 2010, but he did some pretty cool stuff before that, too. Don's tenacity and entrepreneurial drive exhibited itself early in his career, when he was so frustrated that Hewlett Packard had come on campus his senior year solely to recruit electrical engineers (as a production and operations management major, he was more of an industrial engineer) that he accosted the recruiter in the hallway and refused to let him leave until he'd managed to secure a job offer. After working as an operations manager in Hewlett Packard's Circuit Technology Group, serving on the corporate-wide team responsible for the selection of a new ERP system, and having co-founded two small software companies along the way, Don left HP for business school. Upon graduation, he joined The Boston Consulting Group as a consultant, and then Diageo, where he was a manager of strategy for Guinness Americas and Caribbean (he assures us that testing the product was not part of his job responsibilities, but merely a perk). He first moved into the venture capital world with the Fox Group in New York, where he participated in the early funding of companies including WebMD, before being recruited to join Gazelle TechVentures as its second managing director in April 2000.  Gazelle was ranked in the top quartile for venture funds nationally for its 2000 vintage, and Don participated in all of the firm's successful investments, including Rubicon Technology (NASDAQ:RBCN), a former Russell 2000 company, where he served as executive chairman. And five years after meeting John, who was serving on the executive committee at Gazelle, Don agreed to join Blue Chip as a managing director, where he managed investments in software and services companies Aprimo and Intradiem. Don has served on the advisory boards of the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Centers for IU and Ball State, and is Chairman Emeritus of the advisory board for Indiana University’s School of Informatics and Computing.  Don is a frequent lecturer at IU, Notre Dame, Butler University and has twice taught the Entrepreneurship capstone course at Purdue University. This week, Ken Steele continues his conversation with Paula Burns, President & CEO of Lethbridge College, about 5 key ways higher education should be preparing for the decade ahead. (Last week, Paula described 3 notable innovations in competency-based learning, stackable modular credentials, and the use of VR technology: https://youtu.be/9-kxnnMA8nM)   Be Flexible to Reskill Working Students Students not only need Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) but, Paula argues, will increasingly need “Integrated Work Learning,” allowing working adults to return to college for short periods of upskilling and reskilling while continuing to work. Institutions need to respond with flexible learning and delivery models, to accommodate more and more part-time learners.   Be Nimble to Keep Up with Tech Higher ed can’t afford to take months or years to develop programs for new technologies like Virtual Reality, when industry needs our graduates yesterday.   Go Beyond Technical Skills There is worldwide recognition that the skills of the future will be people skills, communication, critical thinking and collaboration skills – so colleges have to ensure that they go beyond the technical aspects of our programs, to prepare our students for the evolving economy.   Be Open to Collaborations Colleges and universities need to innovate as a system overall. Collaboration and potentially mergers and integration will be the way of the future, says Paula. “Institutions can’t all continue to do the same thing and think that we’re going to be sustainable.” Technologies should allow global collaboration on research and teaching alike. although “we talk lots about collaboration, but the system is still set up for competition.”   Stay Focused on Areas of Excellence Institutions should try to integrate their traditional full-time academic programs, continuing education and research or applied research labs into a centre of excellence that can reinforce each other. Every college or university might focus on 3 or 4 key areas of strength, to differentiate and focus each institution’s resources on its real strengths.   Paula concludes by observing that the broader world is pushing higher ed to innovate. There is no normal so why are you trying to control everything? Life is unpredictable. But you already know that. There is no normal even though you wish there was. But you already know that too. What you may not be aware of is that when you try to make life predictable (and normal) you set yourself up for more stress. In other words, try to control life—situations and people—and suffering rolls right in. Consider what you are trying to normalize (or control). Get honest about the people and situations you try to manipulate on your behalf. Ask yourself the following questions: What/who are you trying to control? Does drama follow you around? If yes, what/who specifically is causing the drama? How is trying to normalize life working out? What are you willing to stop trying to normalize? The great news is that letting go of control sets you free. When you give others freedom to be as they are (instead of trying to control them), you not only free yourself from unnecessary stress, you also create more space around you. In other words, as you let go of trying to normalize life, you become easier to be around. Instead of being a perpetual “stick in the mud,” you learn to dance with the unpredictability of life more gracefully. Life is ever changing. This we know. Give up your need to control life and you’ll inspire others to do the same. And that would be a great offering to the world. Later Jonah helped to create The Story of Stuff, which was viewed by over 60 million people and marked a turning point in the fight to educate people about the environmental and social impact of consumer goods. Jonah went onto to create other viral campaigns for Greenpeace, Human Rights Campaigns and the ACLU, as well as consumer brands like Microsoft and Patagonia. Don't wait another day to acknowledge the truth. 3 steps to getting clear. If you keep doing what you’re doing you’ll keep getting what you’re getting. The truth is deep down you already know what you want and you already know what you need. Are you willing to hear the answers? In other words, can you handle the truth? In this episode I talk about the veil that exists between you and the truth of what you really, really want. In the long run, if you keep running circles around the obvious, you’re going to find yourself stuck with the same problems a decade from now. Over your lifetime you accumulate patterns and conditions that separate you from deep yearnings. It’s your responsibility to get clear. No one will do it for you—ever. 3 Steps to Getting Clear Here's a quick version of the steps I further explain in this episode. Get quiet: Get up early or stay up late. Ask the question – What do I really, really want? Write it down: Put pen to paper. Fill three pages without editing What do you really, really want? You already know. Can you handle the truth? Finally, life is too short to wait ten years to acknowledge the truth. Don’t wait another day. The time is now. You are not too late. Buckle up your seatbelt. The truth is waiting for you.
