Five months ago Mr. Grue bought us $25 worth of coffee and today chose to become a monthly supporter of The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast. Born in Berkeley, California in 1933, he studied at UC Berkeley and began his career as an advertising copywriter in San Francisco before turning to fiction. And once he did, he never looked back. Goulart wrote across genres—science fiction, mystery, fantasy, and romance—publishing more than 180 books and an untold number of short stories. You might recognize his work without even knowing it. Ever heard of the TekWar novels credited to William Shatner? Goulart was the ghostwriter behind them. His son Sean once said that Ron's true passion was science fiction. “Deep down, he wanted to be the Ray Bradbury of humorous science fiction.” After hearing today's story, I think you'll agree—he pulled it off brilliantly.Turn to page 73 in Amazing Stories, July 1963, The Yes Men of Venus by Ron Goulart…Next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, Hall and Upjohn had to escape from that "No-man's-land" on Mercury. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for May 22, 2025 is: voluble • VAHL-yuh-bul • adjective Someone may be described as voluble if they are talking a lot in a rapid, energetic way. // Bri knew something was bothering her normally voluble friend when he was reluctant to talk about his day. See the entry > Examples: “The movie is built around an interview with the legendary 91-year-old actor, still vigorous and voluble, with a seize-the-day cornball glow to him. In ‘You Can Call Me Bill,' Shatner sits under the hot lights, with the camera close to his face, talking, talking, and talking—about life, death, acting, fame, love, desolation, and trees.” — Owen Gleiberman, Variety, 16 Mar. 2023 Did you know? In a chapter titled “Conversation,” from her 1922 book Etiquette in Society, in Business, in Politics, and at Home, Emily Post offers her trademark good advice for the loquacious among us: “There is a simple rule, by which if one is a voluble chatterer ... one can at least refrain from being a pest or a bore. And the rule is merely, to stop and think.” Voluble, as is clear in this context, describes someone or something (as in “voluble personality/prose/presence”) characterized by ready or rapid speech. Voluble traces back to the Latin verb volvere, meaning “to set in a circular course” or “to cause to roll.” Another volvere descendant, volume, can also be a help in remembering voluble's meaning, not because someone described as voluble speaks at a loud volume, per se, but because they have volumes to say.

We know you love them, and we know we love them so we are diving into another weekend at another CON, and the Stori’s just keep getting better. From flight delays and lunches with legends and then more flight delays, there are almost too many stories to fit into this pod. It seems like we are on a CONstant Tour. Tori ran into her old friend William Shatner and gave a bartender, who was flirting with her, some advice on how to approach someone properly. This episode has it all: fan stories, Captain Kirk, flirting, travel woes, and pickles - yes, pickles. So dive in, and watch out for whiplash, because these stories take some sharp turns. When you hear the phrase living legend, what comes to mind?....to me…this is someone who has lived a life to their fullest. A life that inspires us to be our best. Someone whose legacy will outlast them.Today, I have the pleasure of releasing my conversation with a true living legend…Bob Gaines. Bob began climbing in the mid-1970s—right in the thick of climbing's golden era, alongside icons like Ron Kauk, Scott Cosgrove, John Bachar, John Long, and Lynn Hill. But Bob wasn't just in the audience—he was part of the show. He became John Long's main climbing partner for five years. He trained hard, soloed hard, and became a Joshua Tree lifer—watching legends like Bachar soloing 5.10s and 11s before most people had their morning coffee. It's easy to remember these iconic names like John Bachar and Lynn Hill, but Bob Gaines has his own right to stand amongst these icons of climbing. With nearly 600 first ascents under his belt, and 500 of them located solely in Joshua Tree California. Bob has certainly stamped his name into the history of climbing. His routes are known for being clean, creative, and undeniably classic—if you're on a Bob Gaines line, chances are you're giving it four stars on Mountain Project. This episode marks Bob's first-ever podcast appearance. I give him the chance to share his origin story. How he found climbing and how the icons of history directly influenced his journey. We dive deep into several of his key first ascents, so get out your MP and be ready to add a bunch of climbs to your to do list. We explore the controversial issue of bolting, how that process developed over the decades, and how we are currently in a time period where we may lose the freedom to bolt in wilderness areas entirely. We explore Bob's unique experience in Hollywood as a stunt double for William Shatner in Star Trek V and safety officer for the 1993 movie Cliffhanger. And finally we speak about Bob's unique experience as a climbing instructor for SEAL Team 6. This is a rare, wide-ranging conversation with a man who's lived more life than most of us can imagine.----HELP SUPPORT THE SHOW & GET ACCESS TO EXCLUSIVE EPISODES!  For a little as $5/mo!----Don't forget to check out our full video episodes on Youtube! The TCM movement is growing but we need your help to spread the word! How do you pray with the stars? That's the question underpinning today's conversation with returning guest, Br. Guy Consolmagno. Guy is a Jesuit brother and director of the Vatican Observatory. He's also the author of the new book, “A Jesuit's Guide to the Stars: Exploring Wonder, Beauty and Science.” As you'll soon learn, Br. Guy is infinitely quotable. Let me give you an example. He writes, “To me, miracles have nothing to do with scientific laws. Rather, a miracle is any remarkable sign that serves to direct our attention to God.” For Br. Guy, that's what his work in planetary science is all about: How do we better understand God? How do we better see God at work in our world? If you've heard Br. Guy speak before, you know he sees no conflict between science and religion. Rather, they're different forms of knowing, different ways of coming into contact with our God of the universe. What does it mean to pray with the stars? Br. Guy tells the story of how many folks often ask him to explain what the star of Bethlehem was. Stars are his thing, right? He should know! But Br. Guy, true to that quote I read above, isn't interested in collapsing science into religion or vice versa. What's the star of Bethlehem? Whatever leads us closer to Christ. But that's not all. We also talk about how formative science fiction and fantasy have been for Br. Guy's vocation and about that one time he met William Shatner. Get Br. Guy's book: https://store.loyolapress.com/a-jesuits-guide-to-the-stars Learn more about the Vatican Observatory: https://www.vaticanobservatory.va/en/
