Sahr Doe found the Church when he was eight years old but could not be baptized until he was 13. His mission was delayed due to the Sierra Leone civil war, and at age 21 he was called into his Young Men presidency. He was then among the first missionaries to attend the Accra Ghana Missionary Training Center, and served in the Nigeria Lagos/Ibadan mission where he was an assistant to the mission president for 12 months. Two weeks after his mission he returned to the Ghana MTC as a tutor and driver for 18 months. Sahr served as district high counselor in the Freetown Sierra Leone district before being called as counselor in the district presidency. He then served as administrative assistant to the mission president of the Ghana Accra mission, Sierra Leone zone, while working as physical facilities manager for Sierra Leone. On his release from the district presidency, Sahr was called as the elders quorum president in his branch, then as branch president. He left to attend Brigham Young University-Hawaii for one semester, without his wife and son, but had an accident while working at the Polynesian Cultural Center and returned to Sierra Leone. He then started a construction company and was called as the secretary to the mission presidency, then as counselor to the mission president. When the 2014 Ebola virus outbreak sent the mission president, senior couples, and missionaries to Ghana, Sahr stayed as acting assistant to the president. He later assisted with orienting new mission leaders to the country and was called again as counselor to the president. In 2016 he was involved in a serious accident that left him partially paralyzed, and in in 2017 was released from the mission presidency and called as secretary to the Area Seventy. He currently serves on the Kossoh Town stake high council. Links There is already a discussion started about this podcast. Share your thoughts. Gale Pooley - Economist and Author With so much at stake in the decisions we make, especially at the global, societal, and environmental levels, it can be easy to feel like our options and our resources are ever-diminishing. We are emotional creatures, and the narratives we embrace matter. Our guest today has spent years tracking some of the most important metrics on earth–things like literacy rates, access to food, and availability of medicine. Far from being an escapist framework to deny the existence of real-world problems, our conversation today left us with the feeling that we had just visited a refueling station, and we were now ready to jump back in to keep doing the hard work. So today, we'll consider the hopeful question:   Are we actually doing better than we think we are? A conversation with economist and author Gale Pooley, on this episode of Lead With a Question. Guest Bio: Gale L. Pooley is an associate professor of business management at Brigham Young University-Hawaii. In his first term as California's governor, Jerry Brown famously said back in 1975, “There is no free lunch. This is an era of limits and we all had better get used to it. Small is beautiful.” Was Brown right? These days, it seems that establishment thinking and most of the content on mainstream media believes it is so. Threats from climate change, overpopulation, and environmental degradation, we are told, now force us to reduce consumption and limit growth in order to save the planet and ourselves. Wesley's guest in this edition of Humanize takes a radically different and far more optimistic view. Gale L. Pooley has co-authored a book entitled Super Abundance in which he and co-author Marian L. Tupy argue that contrary to the roaring pessimism about the human future so often espoused these days, our earthly resources are actually unlimited and indeed, that population increases and innovation are the keys to growing our prosperity and extending our freedoms. Gale L. Pooley is an associate professor of business management at Brigham Young University-Hawaii. Marlisa Ahuna, Germaine Tauati, and LaRae Mortensen of the Hilo, Hawaii Stake, joined Kurt for an online conversation about their unique Huaka'i youth trek over spring break 2022. Marlise is currently the stake interfaith specialist in the Hilo, Hawaiʻi Stake. She has previously served as stake communications director, Primary president and music leader, and Relief Society counselor and president. Marlise grew up in Bakersfield, California, served a mission in Fukuoka, Japan, and graduated from Brigham Young University with a BA in International Studies and Diplomacy, and from the University of South Dakota with an MM in Vocal Performance. She is the owner of Marlise Ahuna Music Studio, married to Joseph for 20 years, and they are the parents of four children. LaRae Mortensen is currently the stake Primary music leader in the Hilo, Hawai'i Stake. She has previously served as the stake Young Women president, ward Primary president, music leader, counselor, secretary, and pianist, as well as ward Young Women president and counselor. LaRae grew up in Punalu'u, on the island of Oahu in Hawai'i, and graduated from Brigham Young University–Hawaii with a BS in Business Management. She and her husband Hans own H&L Services LLC, a landscape maintenance company, and have been married for 27 years. They have five children and seven grandchildren. Highlights 02:30 Introduction to the speakers and the trek they did in Hawaii 05:00 The church is very established in Hawaii. The demographics there. 05:45 The tradition of treks and how it's different in Hawaii 08:00 The trek experience in Hawaii and finding a good location. 09:00 Connecting the tradition of the trek to the culture of the people 11:30 The meaning of Huaka'i 13:30 A summary of the trek and what they did each day 16:20 There was a lot of preparation and activities before the trek. It created a richer experience. 17:30 The follow up experience to the trek. Many of the youth shared their experiences in sacrament meeting. 18:15 The Hawaii trek was adapted in a way that allowed the youth to connect with their ancestors and traditions. They didn't do as much walking. 20:00 The dynamic of the adult leaders and what they did on the trek 24:30 The trek was almost like a glorified youth conference. They packed the days with activities. Because of Covid they didn't do overnights. 26:00 The amount of adults involved and what it took to put the trek together 27:00 There were a lot of cultural activities taught by different members of the stake. 29:20 What the youth got out of the activities and what they went away saying about it 31:15 Sometimes we try too hard to orchestrate a spiritual moment. In reality just gathering together with a focus on Christ, tradition, and our ancestors we can walk away with a spiritual experience. 32:30 Things the leaders think they could change for the next trek More youth-led activities Involving the youth more in preparation and planning 33:40 A cultural based trek is an opportunity to show the youth how their culture aligns with the gospel. Many of the youth see culture and religion as two different things. It was important for leaders to show how they could integrate the two. 36:45 A cultural based trek helps the people inside and outside the culture to see each other better. The pioneers in Hawaii are just as important as the pioneers that crossed the plains There are many different cultures within Hawaii. All the youth were able to connect and learn more about Hawaiian culture to bridge the gap between them. 44:00 Kurt recaps the overall trek experience. 44:50 The dress on the trek and the importance of the clothing they chose to wear that was connected to their ancestors 52:00 Final thoughts. The trek was exactly what the youth in Hawaii needed. It wasn't their event; it was the Lord's event. Links Video of days 1-3 activities Hilo, Hawai'i Stake Facebook page

For hundreds of years, we have thought of scarcity as an economic principle and assumed that population growth leads to a lack of resources. But what happens when you test this theory? According to Gale Pooley, when you look at the data, you discover that we actually live in a world of superabundance! Gale is Professor of Business Management at Brigham Young University—Hawaii and coauthor of the new book, Superabundance: The Story of Population Growth, Innovation and Human Flourishing on an Infinitely Bountiful Planet. On this episode of The Wiggin Sessions, Gale joins me make the distinction between abundance and superabundance and explain why scarcity is a flawed way to measure human capacity. Gale discusses why time price is a better way to measure commodities or productivity than money itself and describes how nearly all commodities have fallen in time price by 90% since 1850. Listen in to understand why economic growth and resource management are infinite and learn how the theory of superabundance holds up—even during a meltdown in the stock market or period of historic inflation. Key Takeaways How Gale defines abundance and what differentiates abundance from superabundance The bet between Paul Ehrlich and Julian Simon re: resource scarcity Gale's relationships with economics and business professor Julian Simon and tech guru George Gilder How Gale uses the concept of time price to factor inflation and economic crises into his research Why we see big decreases in the time price of commodities over time (and why it's a better tool of measurement than money) How the theory of superabundance holds up during a meltdown in the stock market or a period of historic inflation What makes long-term market trends more important than short-term fluctuations How nearly all commodities have fallen in time price by 90% since 1850 Gale's idea of adding knowledge to atoms to create infinite abundance Why Gale sees the ideology of scarcity as the deadliest virus we suffer from on this planet Where the idea of scarcity in economics came from and why population growth actually leads to more abundance Connect with Gale Pooley Gale on Substack Connect with Addison Wiggin Consilience Financial Be sure to follow The Wiggin Sessions on your socials. Is it true that the world's rapidly growing population is consuming the planet's natural resources at an alarming rate that would require two Earths to satisfy the demand for natural resources by 2030? Marian Tupy and Gale Pooley found that resources became more abundant as the population grew. They also found that resource abundance increased faster than the population. On average, every additional human being created more value than he or she consumed. Shermer, Tupy, and Pooley discuss: why we long for the “good ol' days” • Malthusian trap • Ehrlich's predictions on overpopulation • the birth dearth • the Simon Abundance Index • compound interest • What does it mean for the economy to grow 2–3% a year? • accumulating wealth • what poorer countries need to do to become richer countries • running out of fossil fuels • Obama's “you didn't build that” speech • inflation • electric vehicles • How many people can the Earth sustain? • post-scarcity trekonomics • the future of religion and other social institutions in a superabundant world. Marian Tupy is the editor of HumanProgress.org, a senior fellow at the Cato Institute's Center for Global Liberty and Prosperity, and coauthor of the Simon Abundance Index. He specializes in globalization and global well-being and the politics and economics of Europe and Southern Africa. He is the coauthor of Ten Global Trends Every Smart Person Should Know: And Many Others You Will Find Interesting (Cato Institute, 2020). Tupy received his BA in international relations and classics from the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, and his PhD in international relations from the University of St. Andrews in Great Britain. He has taught economics and statistics at Alfaisal Univerity in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; Brigham Young University-Idaho; Boise State University; and the College of Idaho. Pooley has held professional designations from the Appraisal Institute, the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, and the CCIM Institute. He has published articles in National Review, HumanProgress.org, The American Spectator, the Foundation for Economic Education, the Utah Bar Journal, the Appraisal Journal, Quillette, Forbes, and RealClearMarkets. She and I talk about looking at things through different viewpoints and how others (society, family, friends) might look at things differently than ourselves, in this case, namely Tourettes. The conversation switches over to talking about being an author as well as how vision boards work for left-brained people. After we talk about vision boards for a little bit I share the 12th Vision Board Success that I've had. We talk a little bit more about morning routines and wrap it up. In this season I'll be talking with my guests about their story and how they've been able to "rewrite their stars" in their own life. Then after they've shared their story we'll transition into talking about vision boards for a little bit and I'll ask what experience they've had with them and share one of the successes that I've had. Again, why I'm sharing my successes with you is to show that it is possible for you to do the same thing, to use a vision board yourself and that you can rewrite your stars in your own life. I also want to feature YOUR successes! So be sure to get in contact with me or use the Anchor service to send me a snippet of you sharing your Vision Board Success. The Dr. Entrepreneur podcast is an on-demand talk radio show from Healthcare Compliance Solutions, Inc. It’s designed to help busy doctors and business associates discover what works with healthcare services. Blog: http://hcsiinc.blogspot.com/2017/04/hcsi-interview-with-dr-jason-scott-earl.html This episode of Doctor Entrepreneur features an interview with Jason Scott Earl, of the Willes Center for International Entrepreneurship at Brigham Young University Hawaii.  Sponsored by Lance King of Healthcare Compliance Solutions Inc.  www.hcsiinc.com Introduction/Career Beginnings Jason Scott Earl wanted to build and create things when he was little because he looked up to his welding father.  He went to school for engineering and worked for Exxon Mobil as a structural engineer.  He learned that to be successful he needed more business knowledge and personal confidence, so after attending corporate assertiveness training, he also went to Tulane University to get an MBA in corporate finance.  He then worked for World Minerals, where he was mentored for 6 months in corporate finance by the CFO.  They spent every Saturday together talking about accounting and finance.  Over a 5 year period, his company acquired about 7 entities and he rose to Director of Strategic Planning and Finance.  Eventually, World Minerals was acquired and he wasn't excited about the changes being made so he became a “reluctant entrepreneur” and started a business with some colleagues.  They created StarStone, LLC, a material science company that made mix designs for concrete to make it stronger and cheaper.  They started licensing out their technology and soon the company was purchased by iCrete.  Jason says that creating and growing his company was like jumping on a bullet bike going 140 mph. He realized that building a successful company didn't have to take 20 years.

Holly DeVito and her husband started remodeling houses several years ago on a whim as they wanted to update the house they were living in. A few houses later, they are now finishing up a farmhouse project — made even more challenging since they did it while they were also living there. She really enjoys having a vision and seeing it come together. Holly said there are many skills that have translated directly to her work, including patience, project management, budgeting and most importantly, dealing with chaos. In this episode, we talk about how she first kept her hobbies separate from work early in her career. Now, she has clients talking to her about their farms and other remodeling projects. She didn’t realize how much it actually happened until we talked at the Quickbooks Connect Conference a few months ago. I really like how she approaches clients and coworkers for lifetime relationships, not just transactional ones. Holly DeVito is the Founder and CEO of Sum of All Numbers, a bookkeeping and payroll services firm. Prior to that, she was the CFO at The American Red Cross. She studied International Business Management at Brigham Young University – Hawaii and Utah State University.

This is accomplished by encapsulating Ethernet protocols over coaxial cabling common to interior television wiring. In this presentation, the vulnerabilities presented by the use of MoCA encapsulation in conjunction with common recommended coaxial wiring standards are realized with the development of Raspberry MoCA, an embedded device that provides a drop-in, automated exploitation kit which can be installed outside the target structure in less than five minutes, providing remote access and complete control over the connecting LAN. Andrew Hunt is an Senior Information Security Engineer at Bechtel with more than fourteen years of experience working in the defense, health care, and energy industries. He is a certified incident responder, forensics practitioner, and malware reverse engineer. His research includes “Visualizing the Hosting Patterns of Modern Cybercriminals” and “Multimedia over Coaxial Alliance (MoCA): Operation and Security Posture,” as well as projects in non-attributable open-source data collection, Android malware and forensics, deployable sensor data collection over unreliable communications links, and large-scale CND data analytics. Andrew contributed to the Passive DNS Tool Project and established training programs in memory forensics and log data analysis. He is a regular presenter, with speaking engagements at George Mason University, Brigham Young University-Hawaii, Shakacon, ISSA Hawaii, and ISSA National Capital Region. Andrew devotes his spare time to travelling with his family, introducing his children to new cultures and experiences.
