Care More Be Better: Social Impact, Sustainability + Regeneration Now
Changemakers from the grassroots are the most inspiring people out there, but they need the right support to do their job well and make our home planet much better. Nick Mucha, Director of Environmental Issues and Strategy at Patagonia, talks about his latest book that explores how to empower intergenerational activism. Together with Corinna Bellizzi, he explains how to use art in elevating small actions against climate crisis and what it takes to boost skill-based volunteering. Nick also discusses the danger of monetizing public lands and why the smallest communities will be adversely affected by such a decision.About Guest:Nick Mucha is one of the editors of Tools to Save Our Home Planet. He serves as the Environmental Capacity Building Director at Patagonia. In this role, Nick leads Patagonia's efforts to focus and deliver strategic grantmaking support to Patagonia's grantee organizations while enhancing the effectiveness and durability of nonprofit partners. His work is born out of a deep appreciation for the vitally important role that nonprofit organizations play in tackling our most vexing environmental, social, and economic issues. Nick has 15 years' experience leading conservation and community development programs throughout the world. His interest in this work was born while he and his wife served as Peace Corps volunteers in Honduras from 2004-2006. From that experience Nick founded his own organization supporting coastal communities that were grappling with booming surf tourism in southern Nicaragua. After running that organization for 7 years, Nick served as Director of Programs for Save The Waves Coalition with a focus on protecting surf ecosystems worldwide. Nick holds a B.A.in political science from UC Santa Barbara. Outside of work, Nick is usually serving up dad jokes to his three kids or scheming to get in a quick surf, trail run, or weekend adventure off-grid.Guest LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nick-mucha-95a6964Guest Website: https://www.patagonia.comShow Notes: Raw audio00:03:02 - Nick's Journey To Environmental Activism00:07:56 - Motivation And Inspirations Behind The Book00:14:03 - Helping Activists Avoid Burnout00:23:26 - Making The Book Fresh And Relevant00:26:32 - Protecting And Supporting Public Lands00:33:07 - Supporting The Noble Mission Of Patagonia00:40:19 - Picking Your Starting Point And Taking Action00:52:54 - Taking Care Of Yourself00:56:57 - Episode Wrap-up And Closing WordsJOIN OUR CIRCLE. How can schools integrate Social-Emotional Learning, Belonging, Global Citizenship and Creative Expression in one beautiful package? By prioritizing a crucial aspect of schooling: The Arts. And yet The Arts are often relegated to “encore” status, underfunded or even dispensed with duiring budget crunches. For this show, we assembled a talented panel of guests who represented years of experience and an array of artistic disciplines: Film, Theater, Art and Music.David Gran has developed and taught film programs for 20 years in the U.S., Shanghai, and Chile. He was a co-founder of SAS's Innovation Institute and Nido's Changemakers program, the Shanghai Student Film Festival and the InThinking site for IB Film. David is also a former columnist for School Arts Magazine.Tina Casey is the HS Theater Teacher and the Performing Arts Director at ISKL. She has been working overseas for over 30 years, including 15 years in Malaysia. This year marks Tina's final year at ISKL, after which she will return home with her husband to Northern Ontario for a "nap year" before deciding on next steps.Nick Stonehouse is an art and design educator currently working in HCMC, Vietnam. He has taught in multiple curricula at a range of ages, from Early Childhood to Secondary. At present, Nick is thoroughly enjoying teaching grades 2 and 3 art. Nick is also an avid photographer, artist, art enthusiast, and world traveler.Scott Rogal has taught in Canada, Hong Kong and Vietnam. Currently, he teaches Band at the American School of Bahrain and conducts the Jazz Orchestra of Bahrain, a semi-professional ensemble featuring many of Bahrain's top musicians. He is also an active composer who writes and publishes through ApRo Music in Canada. Our guiding question for the show was “What are some characteristics that describe international school arts programs?”Our panelists shared many insights around implementing an arts program while also sharing specifics about their individual domains of music, theater, film and art. Here are a few of the topics covered: What a standard K-12 arts program from a holistic perspective can look likeUnpacking the components of an arts program including mission/vision, infrastructure, curricular outcomes, etc. Painting the picture of what music, theater, film and art look like in ES, MS and HSThis was a rich discussion with each participant chiming in with their takes while sharing experiences from their careers. We has so many questions that plans are already being made for a follow-up recording! This episode was recorded on March 29, 2025.Categories: The Arts | SEL | Life Skills Remember to access our Educators Going Global website for more information and consider joining our Patreon community at patreon/educatorsgoingglobal!Email us with comments or suggestions at educatorsgoingglobal@gmail.com Follow us on LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram or YouTube.Listen on your favorite podcast app: connect from our share page.Music: YouTube. Too often, when we think of public servants we think of paper shufflers and number crunches. But nurses, teachers and care workers as well as officers working in government departments - aren't doing it for the money! These public servants - bureaucrats - are driven by a sense of service, commitment and care that is so vital to support all of our lives.Dan Honig, from UCL (UK) and Georgetown (US) is one of the world's leading researchers on public service practice and he talks with us about what it takes for public servants to be supported to deliver a big mission of care and community support. Building on the research published in his recent book Mission-Driven Bureaucrats he talks about the difference between managing for compliance and support for mission driven work - and how important those systems are for shaping whether public servants can thrive in their work.Dan spoke to us from Washington DC and we also talked about how the current US context is affecting public servants and public service. You can find out more about Dan at this website: https://danhonig.info/, and find out about his latest book - Mission driven bureaucrats - https://danhonig.info/missiondrivenbureaucrats.For more on ChangeMakers check us out:Via our Website - https://changemakerspodcast.org (where you can also sign up to our email list!)On Facebook, Instagram, Threads - https://www.facebook.com/ChangeMakersPodcast/Blue Sky Social - changemakerspod.bsky.aocial & amandatattersall.bsky.socialOn X/Twitter - @changemakers99 or @amandatattsOn LinkedIn - Amanda.Tattersall Hosted on Acast. Learn how to take an apolitical, unbiased stance to support students as they pursue research, literature connections, maker activities, and civic engagement projects in their communities, nationally, and globally. In Youth Social Action in the Library: Cultivating Change Makers (Bloombury, 2025), Gina Seymour outlines school and public library programs, activities, and collaborative projects that will help students learn how to accomplish their goals in their communities. Highlighting the role of the librarian in fostering critical thinking and problem-solving skills, the book explores controversial topics to qualify and expand best practices. UN Sustainable Development Goals are addressed, making this book not only based in community but global in scope. Numerous examples of youth activism from volunteering to protest marches are explained and are broad enough to be applied not only to current trends but also to future causes. From Gabriela's bio: "In 2013 I was living in Mozambique as a diplomatic wife with a 5 year old gilr and working remotely on a succesful youth program that was originally devised to bring talented teenagers to the world economic forum. The organization that hosted the program was undergoing a deep redisign and despite the success of the program it was decided that the goals, international development through the work of youth, did not align with the organization's core mission. At that point it was clear that any professional pursue I might have would need to be something of my own creation. These were the years before remote working was normalised and the luxury of flexible remote working were not widely available. At the same time, my work which had focused on supporting the community development projects young people from our network wre implementing to tackle big issues had really changed my perspective of what a person with a passion for improving the world could do. I had met young people with devastating life stories who despite all odds, or perhaps, because of them, were truly changing for the better the lives of those around them. At that point I was convinced that I needed to find a way to continue this work and how crucial it was to support those young people who are actively working towards a fair, peaceful and sustainable world. This moment was profoundly meaningful because it really pushed me to pursue my sense of purpose. To work and have a career were always life goals of mine and being faced with the reality of having to move countries every for years made pursuing those goals really difficult. I was also deeply inspired by the young people I was working with, they opened up my eyes of how important it is to work on things you are deeply passionate about and believe in.. The realization that I could not rely on existing structures to align with my passions and professional goals was both daunting and liberating. It forced me to embrace the idea that I could, and should, carve out my own path—one that reflected my commitment to fostering meaningful change.I learned that meaningful work doesn't always fit into traditional molds and more often than not it might not be remunerated. It requires creativity, persistence, and the courage to take risks. This period of my life instilled in me the belief that creating something of value, even in uncertain circumstances, is worth pursuing. It was a lesson in adaptability, self-reliance, and persistence, which are values that continue to guide me today."Gabriela is a binational of Mexico and Switzerland, having lived in Georgia, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Brazil, Switzerland, and the United States. With over eighteen years of experience in nonprofit and international development, Gabriela has been a key figure at Global Changemakers since 2009. She initially developed a grant process that has now supported over 500 youth-led development projects worldwide. Gabriela authored the influential article "By Youth, For Youth," published in the Stanford Social Innovation Review, and played a pivotal role in Global Changemakers' growth as a co-founder when it became an independent organization in 2014.In addition to her work with Global Changemakers, Gabriela has co-authored educational tools and consulted on a range of youth-focused events and workshops. This week we're sharing a favorite episode from the archives as we take a pause from our regular podcast schedule to enjoy a spring break with our loved one. Production assistant Monica Haro selected this episode from January 2022 to reshare. Enjoy!Sondra Price was diagnosed at 20, 24, and 28 with malignant phyllodes tumors that led to two lumpectomies, a bilateral mastectomy, implant reconstruction, and an explant to flat closure. She found her way to flat closure on her chest the long way around, and because of that, she's now a fierce advocate for others to truly know what their breast surgery options are. Because the truth is, if you don't know your options, you don't really have any. Can lawyers really be change makers? We talk with Michael Bradley who has taken on Murdoch as well as defending the rights of refugees about what it takes to be a lawyer and a change maker at the same time. He shares his 20 year journey from conventional law to a different kind of lawyering that he has now practiced for 17 years at Marque Lawyers - and how he now centres his legal practice around relationships. He also shares a few war stories of how he has used the law to fight for justice, including the battle against Lachlan Murdoch's attempt to sue Crickey for defamation.Whether you are a lawyer or you are a lawyer sceptic - there is something powerful in Michael's dissection of the legal profession and his identification of a different way to practice the law.For more on ChangeMakers check us out:Via our Website - https://changemakerspodcast.org (where you can also sign up to our email list!)On Facebook, Instagram, Threads - https://www.facebook.com/ChangeMakersPodcast/Blue Sky Social - changemakerspod.bsky.aocial & amandatattersall.bsky.socialOn X/Twitter - @changemakers99 or @amandatattsOn LinkedIn - Amanda.Tattersall Hosted on Acast. Hey, friend. Hello, Change Makers. In the words of Dr. Rikesha Fry Brown—Hey, Black girl. We often say it takes a village, but let's be clear—villages don't build themselves. They're shaped, sustained, and often revived by Black mothers who know what it means to care, connect, and carry more than their share. Today's guest, Jetaun Woodley, didn't just recognize the gap—she built something from it. As a veteran communications strategist and Senior Director at Planned Parenthood, Jetaun has spent her career making sure messages that matter reach the right people. But it's her work outside the boardroom that's building legacy: creating H.U. Mommies, a thriving community of over 800 Hamptonian mothers who show up for one another, online and in real life. In this episode, we're unpacking how Black motherhood is often the foundation of community organizing, mutual care, and everyday advocacy. From navigating health care systems and education challenges to disaster relief and doula recommendations, these mothers are doing far more than sharing parenting tips—they're reshaping what support looks like. Jetaun joins Dr. Rikesha Fry Brown and me for a conversation that's both grounding and galvanizing. We talk about the power of peer support, the courage it takes to create a space when one doesn't exist, and what it looks like to protect and evolve a community you've built—especially when the work is personal. If you've ever questioned whether your care counts or whether creating something small could really matter, this conversation is your reminder: it already does. Listen now and be sure to grab the National Black Girl Month™ Toolkit for more ways to connect at nationalblackgirlmonth.com. To our Hampton fam—we see you. And if you're a mama looking for your people, you just might find them in H.U. Mommies. Connect with Jetaun Woodly on Instagram Jetaun Woodly is an award winning public relations and brand communications strategist with 20 years of experience. She has an unwavering passion and focus on working with individuals and companies to translate business goals and objectives into strategic communications plans and deliverables. Jetaun started her career as a public relations coordinator for Novartis Pharmaceuticals' philanthropy and community development division. She spent many years working in healthcare managing public relations for brands ranging from prescription drugs and FDA approvals, to eye care and over-the-counter products before moving to the nonprofit sector. Currently, Jetaun serves as Senior Director of Brand Strategy & Projects at Planned Parenthood Federation of America, a reproductive health care nonprofit organization. Prior to joining PPFA, Jetaun served as Director of Network Marketing & Communications for National Court Appointed Special Advocate/Guardian ad Litem (CASA/GAL) Association for Children, a non-profit organization that supports and promotes court-appointed volunteer advocacy so every child who has experienced abuse or neglect can be safe, have a permanent home, and the opportunity to thrive. Following the birth of her son in 2015, Jetaun started HU Mommies Group - a support group for Hampton University alumnae. The goal of the group is to share advice, empower Black women, and provide a listening ear as Hamptonians embrace and embark on their motherhood journey. With more than 800 members, the group has planned a number of volunteer efforts across the country, vision board meetups, kid-friendly outings, tailgates at homecoming and a host of other activities. For example, when Hurricane Harvey hit Houston in 2017, Jetaun coordinated a group donation to local organizations that support mothers and children. In 2019, the group collectively donated to Hampton University's marching band, and sent care packages to current students. In an effort to provide unique learning experiences for the children of alumnae during the nationwide shelter-in-place (COVID19), Jetaun created virtual learning classes on a variety of subjects. Jetaun was featured on Essence Magazine Online for her work with the group. In 2020, Jetaun was admitted into Hampton University's Forty Under 40 Alumni Recognition Society. Jetaun served as a volunteer for the I Have a Dream Foundation - a mentor program in partnership with Ebenezer Baptist Church and St. Luke's Church in the heart of Atlanta. She is currently a board member of Atlanta Birth Center, a birth center dedicated to empowering families and providing compassionate, individualized birth experiences. A native of New Jersey, Jetaun received a Bachelor of Arts in Public Relations from Hampton University's Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications in 2004. While at Hampton, Jetaun was involved in Student Union Board and served as historian for the National Council of Negro Women. She also holds a Masters in Communication & Leadership from Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington. Jetaun resides in Metro Atlanta with her husband, Dr. Shaun Woodly (HU '04), and their two children - Brayden and Brooklynn.

This week, we're really excited to share a conversation about a brand-new Children's book called Changemakers by McArthur Krishna and Anne Pimentel, with beautiful artwork by Jessica Sarah Beach. The book is a powerful and much-needed affirmation, especially in a moment when many women are quietly wondering where they fit. Through stories from scripture and the global history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, it highlights women whose ideas, faith, and courage have helped shape the church in meaningful and lasting ways. Accessible to children, beautiful to look at and meaningful for readers of all ages.Today, we're joined by McArthur and Anne to explore some of these incredible stories. Both women are remarkable in their own right—McArthur is the author of several books, including A Girl's Guide to Heavenly Mother and the Girls Who Choose God series. Anne is a founder of Meetinghouse Mosaic, an organization working to diversify Christian art and amplify voices that sometimes go unheard in our faith community. In this conversation, we explore what it means to be a changemaker in a church that values both institutional authority and ongoing revelation. We talked about the tension many women are feeling right now—and how pain can become a catalyst for meaningful, needed transformation, and what true partnership between men and women might look like in that process.McArthur and Anne remind us again and again that revelation doesn't always start at the top—so often, it often rises from the margins, born of questions, connection, and listening with love.We hope this conversation inspires you to trust your gifts, to share your voice, and to believe, deeply, that your contributions matter. And with that, here's our conversation with McArthur Krishna and Anne Pimentel.

The life our youngergenerations primarily women are living is not the life we fought for, not what we marched for.”“We need this foundation of change makers that are nolonger willing to talk about the rhetoric about what needs to change but what exactly is going to change and how we're going to do that is the dialogue I want change makers to start to have.”“Leaning over and saying to one person next to me that thisis my first flight in a long time because I've been really scared, I found acceptance..."“If we look at the biology of motherhood it's rarely 50:50.How do we take that to be and adopt it into policies around flexibility?”“Setting a boundary is a way of personal protection…theytell us we matter.”“We are in a good place to demand more, to make changehappen.” Three Episode Takeaways: 1. Now today we have more power than we ever had – we need to collectively use this power and harness itin a way that benefits us as women. What can each of us do to change the trajectory of people we lead.2. We're asking change makers a lot: declaration as a change maker and know who you are (personal brand) at the core of your being and how it plays out in the changes we're trying to make. Vulnerability can be scary but necessary in making change but communicating our uncomfortableness can help us overcome the fear and find acceptance.3. The Economist research found that for every child a woman has her salary decreases by approximately 4% while a man's income increases by 6% by becoming a father. There is a motherhood penalty. Also 1.5% of women are more likely to leave a job for another for more flexibility than a title. Wouldn't it great to compensate women for the job of childcare! The best thing that you can do for the rest of humanity is to live your truth. In so doing, you are offering those invitations, you are setting an example, and most importantly, you are staying in that higher vibrational state. And that is what humanity needs more than anything else. People are changing. They are growing and evolving, and they don't need to be convinced of anything in order to make those leaps forward. We want you to recognize what your role is there as changemakers and wayshowers. You are not there to poke and prod people into living in a higher vibrational state. You are there to gently offer that invitation so that they may make the choice for themselves to evolve and to join you in a better feeling place. In the meantime, you may feel alone. You may feel that there aren't enough people around you who share your vibration and certainly not enough people who share in your beliefs and your outlook on life. And that is simply something for you to have to handle, but it is not a permanent situation that you find yourselves in. As we said, people are growing and evolving, and more of them are waking up every single day. So it is up to you then to make the most of the connections that you do have while you continue to be the ones who are holding space for the rest of humanity to come along for the ride.
