When I sat down with James Mannion to talk about the educational polycrisis back in July, his long-time colleague, friend, and collaborator Kate McAllister was right there by his side. After the recording, Kate & I spent a long time catching up about her work and its intersection with our own, and we immediately vowed to remember to hit record the next time we chatted.Kate McAllister is both a co-founder of The Human Hive and the founder of The Hive in Cabrera, a school for ChangeMakers in the Dominican Republic, where she joined me from for this conversation. Kate has over 20 years' teaching experience and has spent much of that time training and developing teachers and educators all over the world. She is a passionate educator, published author, fellow of the Chartered College of Teachers and The RSA. The Hive, founded back in 2020, is Kate's answer to the question "what if?" What if learning could be different? What if we did education with not for others? What if we can become more self-determined in our learning? What if education can help regenerate the planet? And as you'll hear in this episode, Kate's personal and educational journey is a remarkable reflection of her dedication to the fully human messiness of growing and learning in community with others. The Human Hive
Solving problems on college campuses is everyone's job. Suzanne Smith is a nationally recognized community strategist, professor, TEDx speaker, and founder of Social Impact Architects. A Duke MBA, she has spent more than two decades helping leaders tackle complex issues in education, poverty, healthcare, and workforce development. She has also worked with government agencies—including the federal government—and is trilingual in government, policy, and business, giving her a rare perspective on how meaningful change happens. Suzanne is the author of Social TrendSpotter, ranked among the nation's top nonprofit blogs, where she has analyzed philanthropy and nonprofit trends weekly for over 13 years. Known for her straight talk and storytelling, she helps audiences see what's really happening behind the headlines, learn why society's toughest problems are so difficult to solve, and discover what solutions have been proven to really work. In her TEDx talk, “Everyone Can Be a Changemaker,” she shows how ordinary people can take small steps that create extraordinary ripple effects. Whether breaking down giving trends, unpacking nonprofit scandals, or highlighting community solutions, Suzanne makes the case that everyone has a role to play in making change possible. In episode 606 of the Fraternity Foodie Podcast, we find out what inspired Suzanne to start Social Impact Architects, how fraternity and sorority students can begin to see themselves as changemakers, how service work helps to rebuild purpose and connection, how students can design community service projects that actually make an impact, what could change if we used frameworks like Social Alchemy to solve complex problems at college, and what excites her most about the next generation of changemakers on college campuses. Enjoy!

In this inspiring episode of the PRovoke Media podcast, Maja Pawinska Sims talks to our Young Changemakers for 2025. The four amazing young women from underrepresented backgrounds around the world have been recognised as future leaders of the communications industry, in the fourth year of the competition: Liyana Shirin in London, Elsie Merhi in Dubai, Kayla Marrero in Washington DC and Lívia Gammardella in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Before the conversation with the Young Changemakers, we speak to the woman behind the initiative, We. Communications founder and global CEO Melissa Waggener Zorkin.
In this episode of the Changemakers, Dave sits down with David Moulton, Senior Director, Content Marketing & Thought Leadership at Palo Alto Networks, to explore the art and the impact of storytelling in B2B marketing and cybersecurity. David shares why emotive storytelling is often overlooked in B2B, how it can cut through complexity, and why it's the ultimate driver of trust, attention, and decision-making. From translating technical topics into human stories to building authentic brand narratives, this conversation dives deep into how emotion and creativity can transform even the most tech-heavy, data-driven industries. If you're interested in elevating your brand's storytelling, or simply love hearing about how the best are doing it, then this episode is a must-listen.
In this final episode of the Changemakers series, Julia speaks with Lily and Melati, co-founders and co-leaders of their organisation, about what it really means to lead side by side. The two reflect on the months they've just spent on the Women Emerging Expedition, realising again and again how rare and valuable it is to have a partner in leadership when so many peers are walking a lonely road. They talk about the power of being “the same but different” similar enough to share a wavelength, different enough to bring out each other's strengths. Lily and Melati also explore the challenges of co-leading: how a close friendship can fuel vision, stamina, and creativity, but also complicate leading others, setting boundaries, and making hard calls. They share glimpses of their day-to-day rhythm from long hours in Bali to impromptu walks through new cities and how that rhythm builds a kind of “leadership soulmate” energy that keeps their mission alive. Listen to this episode to hear how friendship can make co-leading extraordinary and what it takes to keep that friendship strong while leading others. About the guests: Melati is a 24-year-old full-time changemaker and movement builder, and the founder of YOUTHTOPIA and Bye Bye Plastic Bags. She founded Bye Bye Plastic Bags at the age of 12, since then, Melati has spoken on world stages such as TED and the UN, she recently co-chaired the World Economic Forum GPAP committee, sat on the inaugural Expert Advisory Panel for the Earthshot Prize, and has had her film, Bigger Than Us, premiere at the 74th Cannes Film Festival 2021. Today, Melati launched her new company, YOUTHTOPIA, focusing on youth empowerment through short, meaningful peer to peer programs and providing them the tools they need to be changemakers. Her vision is to make YOUTHTOPIA the go-to platform for young changemakers. Lily is a 22-year-old Singaporean-Iranian changemaker and one of the Co-Founders of YOUTHTOPIA. Since its launch in 2020, YOUTHTOPIA has focused on youth empowerment through peer-to-peer programmes, providing students with the tools they need to be changemakers. Currently, Lily is also a senior at Yale-NUS College studying Global Affairs and Environmental Studies. In line with the values of YOUTHTOPIA, Lily is an active changemaker in her community who leads the Moulmein-Cairnhill Mentoring and Tutoring Programme for disadvantaged students in Singapore, and is heavily involved in grassroots voluntary work. Lily is also the youngest ever elected PAP Policy Forum Council member, and is a vocal advocate for youth-centric policies within the government.

We have a chat with Radio Nation's Saturday Extra Host Nick Bryant about all things America - and the long story behind the intractable conflicts in the US. This episode was recorded in December 2024 - after President Trump's election but before he took office so it doesn't focus on what has happened in 2025. Instead it casts a long history that sheds light on the fissures and conflicts, the trend towards authoritarianism and the racism that is not new in American politics. It is also a lovely background to the indefatigable host of Australia's number one (or at least our number one) current affairs radio show! For more on ChangeMakers check us out:Via our Website - https://changemakerspodcast.org (where you can also sign up to our email list!)On Facebook, Instagram, Threads - https://www.facebook.com/ChangeMakersPodcast/Blue Sky Social - changemakerspod.bsky.aocial & amandatattersall.bsky.socialOn X/Twitter - @changemakers99 or @amandatattsOn LinkedIn - Amanda.Tattersall Hosted on Acast. Today I have the pleasure of talking with Supriya Khandelwal and Koa Tran, two members of the South Bay Youth Changemakers, and one of its co-directors, Amulya Mandava. This Asian American organization, located at the heart of Silicon Valley, seeks to both challenge and expand the label, Asian American. The SBYC directs its energy into projects that go far beyond the stereotypes of wealth, acquisition, and status associated with its location, and focuses on empowerment and social justice. Crucially, the organization recognizes the multi-ethnic, multi-racial, and multi-class components of its community. We hear about the kinds of events and activities that characterize this important and vital organization.Koa is a former youth member and summer fellow of South Bay Youth Changemakers. They are currently an undergraduate student in their senior year at UCSD. A special interest of theirs is disability justice and intersectional health. Supriya is a former youth member of South Bay Youth Changemakers. She is a freshman in college majoring in Psychology. They're a fan of internet art culture, and are interested in fair accommodations at school and work, and in labor justice—she believes people shouldn't have to work their lives away.Amulya is co-Director of South Bay Youth Changemakers. Her background is in labor organizing with the UAW, and in organizing against gender-based violence in higher ed.

In this episode of ChangeMakers with Katie Goar, we meet Scott Bader, President of the Door County Housing Partnership. With more than 40 years in real estate, Scott shares how he shifted from selling vacation homes in Wisconsin's “Cape Cod of the Midwest” to leading efforts that create permanent affordable housing for the local workforce.Scott explains how the community land trust model works, why Door County's unique mix of tourism and second-home ownership has fueled a housing crisis, and how his team collaborates with partners like Habitat for Humanity to keep homes affordable for teachers, nurses, service workers, and other essential members of the community. You'll hear about the challenges of scaling workforce housing in a resort destination, the importance of donor and government partnerships, and how small wins like one home at a time can make a lasting impact. This conversation highlights a practical model that other communities facing housing shortages can adopt, and it shows how local leadership and collaboration can build not just homes, but stronger communities.

In Australia, since 2012 there has been an explosive growth in community independents who have been challenging the two-party system and bringing new voices in the parliament. That national movement is called Voices for Australia.Denis was a founding member of the Indi movement and has played a leadership role in supporting and sharing these ideas nationally. In this chat we find out about his long history in rural community activism and then we unpack some of the features of the Voices of movement that has led to its success so far ....You can also read more about Voices for Indi in their book available here:https://scribepublications.com.au/books/the-indi-wayOr read this shorter piece in Arena by Denis and Lesley Howard about the Community Independents movement:https://arena.org.au/a-positive-politics-community-independents-and-the-new-wave-of-political-engagement/For more on ChangeMakers check us out:Via our Website - https://changemakerspodcast.org (where you can also sign up to our email list!)On Facebook, Instagram, Threads - https://www.facebook.com/ChangeMakersPodcast/Blue Sky Social - changemakerspod.bsky.aocial & amandatattersall.bsky.socialOn X/Twitter - @changemakers99 or @amandatattsOn LinkedIn - Amanda.Tattersall Hosted on Acast. In today's message, Pastor Jack encourages us to see ourselves as "change makers," called by God to transform our families, communities, and culture through faith, rather than being shaped by the world around us. He teaches that faith is not just hope, but a present and active force that gives substance to what we believe for—from healing and marriage restoration to personal breakthroughs. Using Hebrews 11, Pastor Jack reminds us that God uses imperfect people who step out in faith, and he urges us to activate our faith through action and by sharing our personal testimonies. He emphasizes the urgency of being bold witnesses—not to win arguments, but to lovingly lead others to Christ—especially as we await the imminent return of Jesus. Let's rise up as thermostats, not thermometers, and use our God-given faith to change our world.Tune in now!Join us for service every Sunday at 9 and 11am (PST) and Wednesday at 7pm (PST)If you received Christ through this message, text JESUS to (253) 859-0832We would love to hear how God is touching your life through this ministry! In this episode of the series with explores from Changemakers expedition, Julia speaks with Ghina, a 24-year-old law graduate whose message is simple and urgent: don't wait to lead. Growing up the youngest of four sisters, Ghina absorbed early lessons that leadership isn't a title but a mindset, something you practice long before anyone calls you a leader. She reflects on the battles with self-doubt, modesty, and cultural expectations that made her hesitate to step forward, and the turning points when she decided to challenge herself and lead anyway. Ghina speaks about the different ways of leading sometimes from the front, sometimes alongside, sometimes from behind and why knowing yourself is key to choosing which way to step up. She also talks honestly about exhaustion, criticism, and the ever-present voices of insecurity, and how she counters them with one conviction: my dreams are bigger than my doubts. Listen to this episode to explore why starting early matters, how to lead without copying others, and why finding and owning your own voice is the most powerful act of change. About the guest: As a law graduate, Ghina Rai has been fearlessly advocating women's rights through many channels, including her own social community, InPower Indonesia, which focuses on women's substantive representation in policymaking. Through her unyielding commitment to championing the cause of the marginalized, she imparts hope and inspires change by teaching refugees and living with labour rights movements. She also used her writings online to shed light on inequalities and serve as a call to action. In her leisure time, she practices martial arts, showcasing the unlimited potential of women.
In this episode of ChangeMakers, Katie Goar sits down with Maura Collins, Executive Director of the Vermont Housing Finance Agency (VHFA). With more than two decades at VHFA, Maura shares how Vermont's unique rural landscape shapes its housing challenges and the innovative strategies her agency is using to respond. From the state's growing second-home market to the pandemic-driven housing crunch, Maura explains why Vermont needs to triple its home construction by 2030 and how employers, policymakers, and communities are coming together through initiatives like “Let's Build Homes.” She also highlights VHFA's upgraded credit rating, its 50-year milestone, and the delicate balance of advancing financial sustainability while staying true to its social mission. Katie and Maura explore the real-world impact of rising housing costs on everyday Vermonters, the role of public-private partnerships, and why affordable housing solutions must evolve beyond short-term fixes. If you're interested in innovative approaches to solving the housing shortage and what it takes to keep small communities thriving, this conversation offers both practical insights and inspiration.

Senator Fatima Payman was the first hijab wearing member of parliament representing the Australian Labor Party and in 2024 she was removed from the ALP caucus in response to her campaigning (and crossing the floor of parliament) calling for the ALP to recognise the genocide in Gaza and the need for a Palestinian State. As it turns out, her leadership was ahead of its time, with much of the world now finally recognising that more must be done to end Israeli aggression and support the right of Gaza to exist. In this conversation she shares the long history of her rise as young Senator from Western Australia. The guiding strength, voice and resilience she learnt from her parents, and how determined she was to bring all of herself - her faith, her gender and her voice - into the Parliament when she was elected. And yes - we talk about what happened when she crossed the floor and what she it has taught her about politics, political parties and making change. For more about Senator Fatima Payman go to https://www.fatimapayman.com.au/For more on ChangeMakers check us out:Via our Website - https://changemakerspodcast.org (where you can also sign up to our email list!)On Facebook, Instagram, Threads - https://www.facebook.com/ChangeMakersPodcast/Blue Sky Social - changemakerspod.bsky.aocial & amandatattersall.bsky.socialOn X/Twitter - @changemakers99 or @amandatattsOn LinkedIn - Amanda.Tattersall Hosted on Acast. We discuss the importance of shifting our mindset to one that is infused with hope. Positive change comes when we choose hope. Though nobody can fix it all, we can all do something and make an impact. Sharon reminds us that if something is worth doing for everyone, it's worth doing for one person. Sharon's civic action toolkit recommendations are: 1) Choose hope. 2) Get involved in an issue that is important to you because your actions do matter. You are in for a dose of inspiration in this episode of Raise the Line as we introduce you to a rare disease patient who was a leading force in establishing the diagnosis for her own condition, who played a key role in launching the first phase three clinical trials for it, and who is now coordinating research into the disease and related disorders at one of the nation's top hospitals. Rebecca Salky, RN, was first afflicted at the age of four with MOGAD, an autoimmune disorder of the central nervous system that can cause paralysis, vision loss and seizures. In this fascinating conversation with host Lindsey Smith, Rebecca describes her long and challenging journey with MOGAD, her work at the Neuroimmunology Clinic and Research Lab at Massachusetts General Hospital, and the importance of finding a MOGAD community in her early twenties. “There's a sense of power and security when you have others on your side. You're not alone in this journey of the rare disease,” she explains. Be sure to stay tuned to learn about Rebecca's work in patient advocacy, her experience as a nurse, and the three things she thinks are missing in the care of rare disease patients as our Year of the Zebra series continues.Mentioned in this episode:The MOG ProjectNeuroimmunology Clinic & Research Lab at Mass General If you like this podcast, please share it on your social channels. In this episode of ChangeMakers, Katie Goar sits down with Gavin Naples, Senior Vice President of the Homeless Veterans Program at the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.Gavin shares how the foundation, born from the sacrifice of firefighter Stephen Siller on September 11, has grown into one of the nation's most trusted nonprofits, providing over 2,000 mortgage-free homes and now tackling veteran homelessness head-on.Gavin explains the foundation's three-pronged approach: building long-term supportive housing through Veterans Villages, creating a nationwide case management network, and partnering with HUD-VASH to fill critical service gaps.He discusses the scope of veteran homelessness, the overlooked impact on children, and how community involvement—from delivering Thanksgiving turkeys to providing peer support—restores dignity and connection for veterans in need.Gavin also shares the foundation's vision of reaching “functional zero” homelessness among veterans and invites listeners to support the cause through donations or volunteer efforts.
