Send Me A Message!Tonight, we're talking about one of the most confusing announcements eBay has made in a long time. New EU packaging rules come into force in August, eBay has published guidance, I've read it, Bell's read it, sellers have read it… and I'm still not convinced the average UK reseller knows whether they need to do anything at all. If you're selling the odd jersey, Funko Pop or pair of trainers overseas, are you now supposed to register in multiple countries? Does eBay International Shipping change anything? Or is this Germany all over again? Let's try and make sense of it together.I'm joined by the infamous "Bargain Bell" for this podcast.Plus the usual honest interactive reseller chat you've become accustomed to!My YouTube channel - https://www.youtube.com/@CarBoot_Chris?sub_confirmation=1My Website - http://www.carbootchris.comSupport the show

Wie verändert KI die Art, wie wir künftig einkaufen? Und welche Rolle spielen dabei Live-Shopping, Re-Commerce und Agentic Commerce? Darüber spricht Verena Gründel mit Saskia Meier-Andrae, Vice President and General Manager, eBay Germany & Central Europe.

Live commerce in Europe is still too often viewed through an Asian lens - and that's exactly the problem. In this episode, Ingrid sits down with Lara Day, who has been building eBay Live in Germany for the past year, six months after the official launch. They explore why the European model needs its own logic and can't simply be a watered-down version of the Asian one. They discuss why re-commerce, secondhand and fashion are the natural entry points for live commerce in Europe - not because of entertainment value, but because live commerce solves a trust problem that static product images never could. And why returns play a bigger role in this equation than most people assume. The episode also features two sellers who are already active on eBay Live: Benjamin Gabriel, who sells refurbished electronics, and Meroda, who sells vintage fashion. Both describe how the personal connection to the buyer in a live stream changes purchase decisions - and reduces returns.Plus: how much technology and production does a successful live stream actually require? The answer might surprise you. Note to the eBay webinar:Want to go deeper? On June 16, 11. a.m. we're hosting a free webinar What It Really Takes to Succeed in Live Commerce together where Mason Howell from eBay and Ingrid Lommer will walk you through exactly how eBay Live works, what you need to get started, and how brands and retailers can make the most of it. Topps is bringing serious heat with Bowman Basketball, Cosmic Basketball and the return of Topps Football, but Mike Gioseffi has a big problem with how it's all being rolled out. He opens the show with a rant on Topps flooding the market all at once after long gaps with almost no major releases, and explains why the timing is brutal for collectors trying to plan around multiple expensive product drops. At the same time, he gives Topps credit for what looks like a loaded stretch of releases, from Cosmic's massive chase potential to Bowman Basketball's return and the inserts that could help Topps Football be a major success. Then the episode shifts into a fun deep dive on underrated 90s inserts with Lane Dukart, including Penny Hardaway, Platinum Medallions, Flair Row 0 and other nostalgic cards that still feel under-appreciated in today's market. The rise of live shopping: eBay taps fandom, collectibles obsessions, and the consumer's penchant for entertainment-laden commerce with debut of eBay Live in Australia as global spending looks set to hit $2 trillion by 2030.

Host: Nadia Cameron, Publisher | Editor – Marketing Live shopping, a blend of live video, real-time interaction and in-stream checkouts, is becoming a significant incremental ecommerce growth lever. Global figures suggest living shopping will tip an eye-watering US$2 trillion by 2030 and hit $1 trillion this year. It’s already revolutionising retail in Asian markets: Live shopping in China represents 80 per cent of the incremental growth in the ecommerce sector. A big driver for this gamified commerce phenomenon? FOMO. Per eBay research, almost half of Australians (48%) are driven by fear of missing out in their shopping habits, and one in two say they’ve missed out on coveted limited edition or rare items they would have liked to have purchase. With such insights to hand, eBay Live launched in Australia just in time for Christmas, coupling the livestream broadcasting format with its goods marketplace. First port of call: The growing collectables audience of buyers and sellers on its platform (30 per cent of Australians are collectors). Over the last 3-4 years, eBay took a position that it wasn’t going to be a marketplace for everyone and everything, says eBay head of marketing and communications, Zannie Abbott. Core categories for eBay include car parts and accessories, pre-loved fashion and the ballooning category of collectibles and trading cards. “There are other places where you can buy your tissues and your nappies, but we really are the place to go for the things you love, and we have really doubled down in specific focus categories where we know we have a right to win here locally in Australia,” she says. “There is a perfect synergy around community, commerce and culture as an opportunity that really is ripe for us.” eBay Live has been natively built into the marketplace and app. Users can go straight into a live stream and start bidding and buying, participating in short auction bursts running for just seconds. The local rollout took a snappy six weeks thanks to learnings from US and UK launches, cross-functional collaboration and an “agile” all-in approach to innovation fuelled by a low-ego culture, says Abbott. Trust is at the heart of the offering, continues eBay Live category manager, Eric Chen. Every seller is vetted, handpicked as much for personality and broadcast potential as they are for their selling prowess. Tapping directly into FOMO and culture, eBay chose to make its first Aussie livestream secret, featuring AFL superstar, Buddy Franklin, who auctioned rare, signed AFL trading cards for just $0.01. The global trading card games market is forecast to grow to $18bn in the next five years. “It's incredibly exciting for everyone tuning in at the moment, but that also then turns into content afterwards that reaches a much bigger audience,” Chen says. “We just had a stream last week with Veronica Taylor, who was the original voice of Ash Ketchum for the Pokémon 30th anniversary event. These moments are something we’re able to build through eBay Live, which previously we didn't have a platform for, and create these special moments.” To grow awareness and education, eBay Live’s marketing strategy emphasises owned channels and grassroots connection. It’s leveraged five collectible toy events, undertaking live activations on stage to build momentum, interest and excitement in the entertainment-with-commerce proposition. Using the starting point of behaviour, iProspect national managing director, Marcelle Hoyek, says the agency worked with eBay to identify two audiences: Those ready for Live now, and those who will be ready sometime in future. Live wasn’t an unfamiliar concept, but the habit wasn’t ingrained, she points out. “It all starts with audience and that’s the biggest role we play with eBay when they’re launching something new into market,” she says. “Who's the audience? What are they into? What are their drivers? And what's the opportunity for us? Commercial data is indicating eBay is onto a winner. In the US, one seller sold $1M USD of watches in 3 hours. A livestream in Australia featuring Pokémon cards clicked over $100,000 AUD in one night. “There are a number of metrics we're monitoring as a business to understand whether we're getting traction or not, and that's everything from number of sellers to number of live streams to sales,” comments Abbott, adding a fine balance of new buyers coming to site, content density and number of sellers is critical to success.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode of Sports Cards Nonsense, Jesse Gibson is joined by Alex from Clever Cuban Cards to dive into the current state of the hobby and the strategies that actually work for collectors today. We kick things off with a deep dive into the "Bin to Binder" challenge, where Alex reveals how he managed to turn a strict $35 monthly budget into a collection currently valued at over $1,100 in just two months. We break down the specific flips, including a massive $60 to $325 move on an Albert Pujols rookie at a recent card show, and discuss the discipline required to keep "PC" cards instead of chasing a quick premium. The conversation moves into the world of low-end slabs and the "15 dollar slab" debate. Jesse and Alex debate whether it makes sense to grade modern cards that return as PSA 9s when they often sell for less than the cost of the grading fee itself. We also tackle the ethics and mechanics of cracking slabs, including Alex's recent purchase of a PSA 8 Tom Brady case hit with the express intent to sell it raw or regrade it, and whether the hobby is shifting toward a more "pro-restoration" mindset similar to the comic book and Pokemon communities. We also cover the latest headlines, from the "Taco Seasoning Bandit" who used grocery store self-checkouts to steal thousands in sports cards to the recent massive sales volume in February 2026. We wrap up by answering listener questions about the future of Topps, the safety of TCG versus sports cards as a long-term play, and whether card manufacturers should include identification guides on packs to help new collectors navigate the endless sea of parallels and short prints. Dr. Beckett and Rich Klein discuss the leaked private Fanatics 2025 National meeting notes and treat it as an example of how sensitive corporate prep materials can surface, whether accidentally, intentionally, or spitefully. They argue the notes mostly reflect normal corporate meeting preparation, especially for Michael Rubin's rapid-fire meetings, and emphasize such documents should be collected or shredded rather than trashed. They also say they don't see anything “horrible” in the leaked content, noting that quantity pricing and giving better terms to bigger customers is standard business practice, including examples from their own experience and comparisons to dealing with large accounts like Walmart. The episode explores hobby implications such as allocation advantages for high-profile or high-overhead partners (e.g., Tom Brady's Card Vault) and how losing Fanatics allocation can hurt stores and breakers, sometimes forcing them to buy on the secondary market. They describe a local shop (Mason's) closing after losing allocation and discuss adaptation strategies, especially shifting toward singles (high-end and long-tail) versus modern “breaking room/lounge” stores that emphasize wax. They touch on concerns about behavior that could look monopolistic, but point to competition such as eBay Live's hiring push, and conclude Fanatics will be fine if it keeps serving customers rather than acting like the only option, ending with advice for future meetings: be mindful of discoverable notes and ‘bring a shredder.'   00:40 How Corporate Meetings Get Prepped (How Slides Leak) 03:11 Accidental vs Spiteful Leaks + Handling Sensitive Docs 04:50 Rubin's Team: Over-Preparation? 07:08 Slides Shown: Quantity Pricing & “Best Customer” Deals 08:46 Tom Brady's Card Vault, Breakers, and the Monopoly Line 11:13 When Allocation Gets Cut: How Shops Can Survive 13:19 Two Divergent Futures for Card Shops

With the Nashville Card Show kicking off this weekend, Mike shares his strategy for the show. He breaks down why he is looking to buy bulk inventory for eBay Live and details the "blind offer" battle he is planning with Alex at the booth. Then, the focus shifts to baseball. The MLB season is around the corner, and the buy window on some top prospects has already slammed shut. Mike explains why he missed the boat on Roman Anthony but is pivoting to buying Travis Bazzana, Max Clark, and Ronald Acuña Jr. instead. Then, Adam Gray joins the show for an NBA Market deep dive. They discuss whether the Pistons and Cade Cunningham are finally a legit playoff threat or just a good story. The conversation heats up around Stephon Castle's shocking $75k sale, and the guys debate if this is sustainable. Black Week 2025 was not what many expected - and the data behind it is unmistakable. Ingrid speaks with Benjamin Weyrich from the e-commerce agency Front Row about hard facts: why brands see almost no growth without deals, why profitability continues to decline, and why the first deal day has now become more important than Black Friday itself. Benjamin explains how brands can use Amazon Marketing Cloud to identify, for the first time, which products turn customers into fans - and which ones lose them for good. It also becomes clear that pushing clearance stock into deal events is the wrong strategy. The episode also shows which categories performed surprisingly well, where declines were noticeable, and how deal events can influence Customer Lifetime Value over the long term. And that brand-building is becoming increasingly crucial in the marketplace business. In the end, one thing becomes clear: anyone aiming to make Black Week 2026 more successful needs a solid data foundation - and a deal strategy that no longer relies on gut feeling.Note from the Sponsor eBay:eBay is pushing Live Shopping in Germany: with eBay Live, sellers can present their products in real-time, engage with their community, and sell directly - all in the exciting auction format that has made eBay legendary. Jeremy welcomes Adam Martin (Dave & Adam's Card World) for a deep dive on the hobby's biggest pivot: Topps/Fanatics taking over the NBA license and what it means for Panini, breakers, and LCSs. Adam lays out the near-term timeline around Topps' Oct 23 launch, why Panini isn't going away (expect player-licensed basketball), and how pricing and allocations could shift as Fanatics spreads product more widely. They get tactical for shop owners and breakers, dynamic pricing, the loss of Flawless/Treasure margins, and why high-end basketball may thin out initially while Topps builds premium brands. On live commerce, they compare Whatnot vs. Fanatics Live vs. eBay Live, and talk through the risk/reward if Fanatics favors breakers on its own platform. Macro factors hit the table too: Walmart's booth at the National, GameStop's hobby push, distributors pivoting (hello, Pokémon), and how World Cup Prism keeps catalyzing soccer. The segment closes on market psychology: the $12.93M Jordan–Kobe Logoman, Kevin O'Leary's capital, whether modern records trigger more supply, and why the best copies may disappear into “forever collections.” Insight-packed, candid, and grounded—this is your field guide to the post-license-swap era. From the late 90's into the late 2000's, eBay was actually a decent place to make some money. It was just people selling stuff to people, and all was right with the world. Unfortunately, Meg Whitman left eBay in March of 2008. That's when eBay started to slide downhill. Be sure to Subscribe to the Show! Find much more TRUTH about ECommerce on my site. EPISODE TRANSCRIPT Welcome to Chris Malta's EBiz Insider Podcast, where you heard it here first, because you definitely won't hear it anyplace else! Let's talk about the question that more and more eBay Sellers are asking more and more every day: What happened to eBay? To do that we have to start with a little history lesson. From the late 90's into the late 2000's, eBay was actually a decent place to make some money. It was just people selling stuff to people, and all was right with the world. I was very involved with eBay back then. I was an eBay Developer Partner. I was a speaker at their national "eBay Live!" conventions. I spent years as a regular guest on eBay Radio. When eBay wanted info and content on Wholesaling, they called me. In about 2006, they asked me to write a book about how to find stuff to sell on eBay, and I did. It was published by McGraw-Hill and is still in bookstores today, although I would not recommend it now, because eBay has gone seriously downhill since about 2009. I firmly believe that the driving force behind all the things that were GOOD about eBay in those days was Meg Whitman, eBay's CEO back then. On her watch, the eBay Partner Program was created. eBay Educators were trained and certified to help potential sellers. Outreach programs for disadvantaged people who wanted to start a business were created. The eBay Radio Show began. The "eBay Live!" national convention was created. The 'eBay Bible" was written. I met Meg Whitman at the eBay convention in Las Vegas in 2006, when I was there as a speaker. Very smart person, and very interesting to talk to. Unfortunately, Ms. Whitman left eBay in March of 2008. That's when eBay started to slide downhill. eBay is a price-driven marketplace. It's like a flea market, actually. Everybody who shops there is looking for deal and bargains; they all look for the lowest price. That was okay when it was just people selling to other people back in the glory days. That marketplace tended to correct itself with respect to general pricing. After Meg Whitman left and the new management took over, it seems that the people running things got greedy. It started to look like everything was about earning more money for eBay in any way possible, even if it was at their Sellers' expense. The 'eBay Live!' conventions were shut down. The training and partner programs were shut down. eBay University was shut down. Regulations got more regulatory. Customer Service got less customer servicey. Fees went up, more and more each year. eBay stopped backing up their sellers as much as they used to during problem resolutions, and started siding with the buyers much more often. Sometime in about 2009 I was contacted by eBay and asked if I would work with one of their groups, to teach them how wholesale companies operated and how to properly communicate with them. I figured, "Great, eBay wants to learn more about how wholesale works!" That couldn't be a bad thing, right? So I did what they asked. Later on, I learned what they had really been interested in. They had started a project which, if I remember correctly (don't quote me on this) they internally called the 'Enterprise Project'. They basically opened a back-channel into eBay and began contacting wholesale and manufacturing companies, and invited them to come in and sell directly on eBay. Under assumed Seller names, so that nobody would know who they really were. In other words, eBay was no longer just people selling to people; it became more and more about wholesalers selling to people, but it seems that most people didn't know that. To the best of my knowledge, this practice still continues. The effect is that eBay has been flooded with wholesalers who can sell at much lower prices than individual eBay Sellers can. That's a terrible thing for eBay Sellers. In fact, more and more eBay Sellers are complaining that they can't find cheap enough wholesale sources of products to beat their competition on eBay and make a profit. Those Sellers blame their wholesalers for that. The reality is that eBay Sellers simply can't compete against other 'Sellers' that they don't realize ARE wholesale companies. As I said earlier, eBay has always been a price-driven marketplace. People looking for the lowest prices. Searching for what they want, then clicking the "Sort By Lowest Price" button. So of course eBay Sellers can't compete, because the wholesalers will always have the lowest price! It's important to understand that the worst place you can possibly put a home-based retail business is squarely in the path of the most bargain-hunting consumers. That's a given no matter where you're selling because home-based business owners need realprofit margins (at least 20%) to sustain a business, and 30 to 35% to grow that business. That doesn't happen often in ANY bargain-hunting, price driven marketplace. Add direct wholesalers into the mix, and you can forget it. At this point, in my experienced opinion, eBay is no longer a place where a home-based business owner can make any significant money. YET...there are HUNDREDS of "Make Money On eBay!" programs, books, tools and systems out there, many that sell for thousands of dollars, run by sniveling weasels who know they are lying to you. There are OTHER programs and systems that tell you that eBay should be a PART of your online business, along with Amazon and your own Website. Anybody who knows this business knows that's post-digestive dog food, because price-driven marketplaces like eBay and Amazon do NOT mesh with properly marketing-driven businesses like Websites. But the weasels lie to you and sell you that junk for college-tuition-level money anyway. Don't you believe them. For bargain hunters who SHOP on eBay, things have gotten BETTER. For the home-based business owner who tries to make a serious full time living SELLING on eBay, it's game over.
