Brian Kemp’s approval. Sponsored by Rep. Jordan Ridley, HB 845 aims to enhance transparency and accountability in school district budgets. The auditor, a certified professional with five years of experience, would conduct comprehensive audits, including financial and operational reviews. The bill follows recent school board actions to address financial concerns, including audits related to the state’s floating homestead property tax exemption, which could have cost the district $50 million over three years. STORY 2: Reinhardt to Move Nursing School to Main Campus in Waleska Reinhardt University is relocating its Dr. John A. The masked defendants, armed with a pistol, assaulted and held victims at gunpoint while searching for cash. Evidence from surveillance, geofence data, and social media linked them to the crime. Pridgen, 16 at the time, was tried as an adult due to the crime's severity. A third accomplice, David Kelley, who acted as the driver, received a 20-year sentence with five years in prison. The case highlights the lasting trauma of home invasions. If you wanna get to the second date, you will not do this one particular thing. I want you to remember that a first date is like an interview, guys. You must pass the first date before you can get to the second date. So that first date is your chance to really grab the attention of the person that you're on a date with. So one thing I want you to do when you show up on your first date is to leave behind any of that emotional baggage that you carry with you that we all carry.Leave all of that emotional baggage behind. And I know we all carry it. We've all been hurt at some point in our lives. The thing is that if you bring that emotional baggage with you to your first date, it's going to affect how you appear to the other person. When we bring the emotional baggage to our first date, we have our guard up. And we're either A, ready to fight if we need to fight, or B, so protected that we don't allow our authentic, most beautiful self to shine through. And this is our chance to show ourselves in our best light. This is like an interview. So don't be guarded, leave that behind, and instead allow yourself to be vulnerable. It's okay to go there. When you're vulnerable, your date will be able to really see a glimpse of the type of person that you really are. So what happens is that if you bring yourself guarded to that first date, then your date is going to see this very tough exterior, a tough person who's independent and strong. But that's not necessarily what we want to show on that first date. You can show that a little bit later when the time is right. At the beginning, we want to be bringing a calm, beautiful energy to the table. Right? Allow yourself to sit in a peaceful energy with your guard down so that you can be as authentic as possible and that person can really get to see a little glimpse of the type of person that you are.This is your chance to shine. Don't bring a guarded, protective energy to the table because then you're going to be seen as that type of person and the truth is that it's not who you always are. You're not always this tough person ready to fight and protect yourself if you have to. You're not always that person. You have peaceful, calm moments where you sit in your most authentic self. When you're at home alone, you're your most authentic self when no one is watching or when you're with your friends or loved ones or your family.Don't be afraid to bring that version of you to the first date because that's the version that they need to see on the first date, which remember, is like your interview. And once they get to know you, then you can show them that you're independent and strong. And you can show it to them when the timing is correct. The timing is not on the first date. You don't want to scare that person away. You don't want to intimidate them. And I'm not saying don't be yourself. If yourself, your true self is someone who's strong and independent, that's fantastic. I'm not saying don't be that. I'm just saying don't.Don't bring that person to the table yet. Wait before you bring that person to the table, okay? We're all filled with different types of qualities. We're strong sometimes, we're independent sometimes, we're gentle sometimes, we're sensitive sometimes. All I want you to do is to wait, to hold off on showing that part of your personality until the timing is correct. It's just not made for a first date because the person can get easily scared or intimidated, or they're going to think that you're always like this, tough, strong, rough, independent, protective. They're going to think that you're always like that. And those are beautiful, wonderful qualities to have at a certain time in life, not on a first date. So bring a peaceful, calm, wonderful, open, authentic energy to your first date. Captivate them and get yourself to the second date first.And then they can get to know you more and get to know the other side. They can get to know that strong independent side of you a little bit later on. Okay, see it as an onion, right? When you're peeling the onion, you're going layer by layer, right? Layer by layer. You don't wanna bring on these very strong personality qualities so quickly early on, right? We wanna bring in a calm energy, a calm, open. Authentic, vulnerable energy is what's going to get you to the second date. And I know that can make you feel uncomfortable. I get it. I've been there. I was there before. But in order to get to the second date, you must put the weapons down, put your guard down. Okay? You can do it. It was so great to be here for you guys today. The park will feature camping, hiking, mountain biking, and more. The approval included variances for buffer encroachment, street access, and eliminating a deceleration lane. Located on Garland Mountain Way, the park spans the Bartow-Cherokee County border, with Cherokee County handling the campground's 243 acres. The park will include eight campsites, a pavilion, and accessible facilities. Bartow County will oversee development on its side. The church has not provided a construction timeline. STORY 2: Creekview Student Earns Second Place in Amicalola EMC Competition Amicalola EMC hosted the Sub Area I EMC/FFA Electrification Contest on Nov. 21, where Creekview High School's Aaron Dickson placed second. Sponsored by Georgia's EMCs, the contest is part of the Agriculture Education program by the Georgia Department of Education. It allows students to showcase skills in electrical wiring, critical thinking, and communication, promoting education and safety in electricity. STORY 3: Canton Police Officers Host 'Shop with a Cop' The Canton Police Department held its annual Shop with a Cop event on Dec. 10 at Walmart Riverstone Parkway, providing Christmas gifts and experiences to 21 local children. The event was funded by $8,900 in community donations from groups like the Lions Club and Laurel Canyon Optimist Club. The program, started in 2021 with support from the Atlanta Falcons and Arthur M. Blank Foundation, has positioned Cherokee County as a leader in girls' flag football. The 14U team achieved a historic victory, dominating their matches, while the 12U team also performed strongly. The event, showcasing talent from across Georgia, highlighted athleticism and sportsmanship in a non-contact sport environment. Stumptown, established in the 1920s, is one of Cherokee County's oldest predominantly Black communities, named for the tree stumps left under house foundations during its development. The marker aims to highlight the community's historical significance, with plans for more markers in partnership with the city to recognize other historic neighborhoods. Here is Stephanie Joyner on plans for future signage: ***STUMPTOWN 2*** STORY 2: Cherokee Approves Property Tax Increase   Cherokee County commissioners unanimously approved a property tax increase, setting the maintenance and operations millage rate at 5.153 mills, lower than the originally advertised 5.224 mills. This decision will raise property tax revenues by 5.99% over the rollback rate. The county also set the parks bond millage rate at 0.27 and the fire district tax rate at 2.888 mills, resulting in a total rate of 8.311 mills. The increase is intended to fund additional firefighter positions and meet rising costs due to inflation. STORY 5: Here's Why Waleska's Water Service Was Interrupted   Recent water system issues in Waleska have been resolved, according to City Clerk and Manager Robyn Smith. The city experienced two interruptions this month due to low water levels in its tanks. The first incident occurred on July 4 due to a computer crash, affecting the Sam Nelson Road and Reinhardt College Parkway areas. A temporary fix was implemented until the computer was rebuilt. A subsequent water main break on July 15, caused by a lightning strike on Fincher Road, led to disruptions in that area. Both incidents triggered boil water advisories, which were lifted promptly after repairs. Currently, normal service has resumed for all customers, with ongoing monitoring of water levels in the tanks. Residents at addresses 900 and lower will use Highway 20, while those at 960 and higher will use East Cherokee Drive. Phase 1 involves addresses 931 and 935, using East Cherokee Drive. A detour via Highway 20 and East Cherokee Drive will be posted, ensuring safety for drivers and construction personnel. Break: DRAKE STORY 4: Cherokee County Starting Public Hearings on Property Taxes   Cherokee County is considering a potential millage rate increase for fiscal year 2025, starting with a series of public hearings. The proposed maintenance and operations millage rate is 5.224 mills, up from 4.954 mills, aiming to increase property tax revenues by 7.45% over the rollback rate. Additional millage rates for fire services and parks bonds are also under review. Public hearings are scheduled for July 2, July 16 (at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m.), with final decisions expected on July 16. The meetings will take place at the Cherokee County Administration Building in Canton. Agenda items include rezoning requests and development agreements. STORY 5: Waleska Man to Serve Five Years in Prison For Terroristic Threats   Christopher Dean Bowling, a Waleska man, has been sentenced to five years in prison for terroristic threats following a conviction by the Cherokee County District Attorney's Office. The sentencing, handed down by Superior Court Judge Shannon Wallace on June 21, represents the maximum penalty under Georgia law for this offense. Bowling was initially investigated by the Cherokee Sheriff's Office after a domestic violence incident on July 28, 2023, where he prevented his partner from leaving and was accused of strangling her in the presence of a child. Despite being found guilty of terroristic threats, Bowling was acquitted of other related charges following a two-day trial. This initiative, part of a 25-year pavement life cycle plan, includes prominent subdivisions like Riverlake Landing, Golden Hills, and BridgeMill. Funding includes $3,297,747 from Georgia DOT's 2024 Local Road Assistance grant, with no local match required. Completion is slated by year-end 2024. An intergovernmental agreement amendment with Canton was also approved, covering 2.616 miles of city roads like Reservoir Drive and Marietta Highway, reimbursed by Canton for approximately $1 million. STORY 2: Mark Chesnutt Cancels Canton River Rock Show and Other Concerts Mark Chesnutt, scheduled to headline Canton's River Rock Music Fest on July 27, had to cancel due to recovering from emergency quadruple bypass surgery. Break: DRAKE STORY 4: Ball Ground Looking to Roll Back Milage Rate The Ball Ground City Council plans to maintain its millage rate for fiscal year 2025 at a "rollback" rate of 3.732, ensuring no property tax increase for residents. This rate matches the amount needed to generate the same property tax revenue as the previous year. City Manager Eric Wilmarth confirmed this decision, noting that it will result in approximately $1,001,000 in property tax revenue. Due to the required publication of a five-year tax history in the Cherokee Tribune, setting the millage rate has been rescheduled to July 11. The council previously approved a $6.3 million budget for the upcoming fiscal year in May. STORY 5: Cherokee County Man Convicted of Terroristic Threats Christopher Dean Bowling, 29, of Waleska, was convicted of terroristic threats by a Cherokee County jury following an incident last summer. The conviction stems from a domestic dispute where Bowling prevented his partner from leaving their home during an argument, which led to a disconnected 911 call. Evidence included a disturbing four-minute audio recording where Bowling allegedly threatened and strangled the victim. Despite the victim's reluctance for legal action, the prosecution emphasized the severity of emotional abuse and potential danger in the relationship. Bowling was acquitted of aggravated assault and cruelty to children charges but faced sentencing on June 21. Commercial: INGLES 4 STORY 6: Kids Participate in Cherokee County Safety Town Over 100 children have participated in Cherokee County Safety Town this month, a program designed for incoming kindergarten students to learn about safety through interactive lessons. Hosted by Safe Kids Cherokee County and Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services, this marks the 20th year of the initiative. The program covers a range of safety topics such as road safety, fire safety, and poison safety, complemented by crafts, games, and simulated traffic scenarios. Teen counselors assist in activities and can earn community service hours. Participants receive certificates upon completing the week-long program, supported by various local agencies including the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Cherokee Sheriff's Office. STORY 7: Work Set to Begin on Highway 140 and Batesville Road Intersection The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners has approved a $5.8 million construction contract with Bartow Paving Company, Inc. to enhance the intersection of Highway 140 and Hickory Road/Batesville Road. This project aims to improve traffic flow by adding additional thru-lanes on both roads and dedicated right-turn lanes on all sides of the intersection. Funding includes $2 million from the Georgia Department of Transportation's Local Maintenance and Improvement Grant, with the remaining $3.8 million coming from Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax funds. The construction, identified as a priority in a 2019 corridor study, is expected to begin soon and last between 18 to 24 months. Fire Chief Rebecca Strobl Turned Her Knowledge of Life-Saving Skills into a Business to Train Others How To React In Emergencies.   I don't know about you, but I could use a refresher course in how to do CPR, and what exactly to do first when someone's bleeding badly, even what to do if someone is in shock.   In a recent episode of the Debbie Nigro Show, I decided to shine a spotlight on Rebecca and her company New Day Education and Motivation located in Waleska, Georgia because I thought the work she was doing was critical and felt every community should have a Rebecca.    Rebecca Strobl has inspired me to go get a hands on refresher course in how to react in emergencies. Apparently I don't own the market on being a nervous reactor when something insane happens as most people without the right skills do panic.   By leveraging her expertise and passion, Rebecca Strobl is making a difference one life-saving skill at a time, inspiring others to join her in creating safer and more prepared communities.      With a background as a retired volunteer fire chief and extensive experience in the security industry, Rebecca saw a need for widespread training in emergency response.    Starting as a lieutenant in the fire department, she saw a gap in knowledge and took it upon herself to provide comprehensive training not only to firefighters but also to individuals in various industries.   One of the key takeaways from my conversation with Rebecca was the importance of hands-on training in emergency situations vs watching a video.   Rebecca is adamant that of in-person courses matter, because participants can practice CPR, use AEDs, apply tourniquets, and learn to manage shock effectively.   She highlighted the difference between simply knowing what to do and having the confidence to act decisively in critical moments especially the average person who does not have a background in using these skills on a regular basis.   Rebecca stressed the significance of being prepared for emergencies by having essential supplies on hand. She recommends items like CPR masks, tourniquets, dressings, bandages, and emergency blankets for addressing the three primary killers: lack of breathing, severe bleeding, and shock.   Rebecca's passion is to empower individuals to with the knowledge to be able to save lives. Shaw, 23, is accused of causing Millard's death without intent. The grand jury did not indict Shaw for felony murder or aggravated assault. Millard was shot after leading officers on a pursuit from Woodstock into Cobb County on October 12. Shaw was taken into custody and is held without bond. Woodstock Police cooperated with the investigation, and Shaw resigned from the department on October 19. The city awaits the trial outcome before issuing further comments. STORY 2: Reinhardt Officer Receives Lifesaver Award Officer Miguel Castro, serving with Reinhardt University Department of Public Safety and Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services, was honored with an EMS Lifesaver Award from Cherokee County for saving a man's life during cardiac arrest in Canton last year. Days before receiving the award, Castro responded to a multiple casualty vehicle accident in Waleska, administering critical treatment and ensuring safety on the scene. Castro emphasizes teamwork in his actions and credits his crew for their collective effort. Reinhardt Police Chief Jay Duncan commended Castro's exemplary response, highlighting his unique skill set and leadership. Castro humbly shares credit with his team, emphasizing their collaborative efforts. STORY 3: Kemp Signs Major Reforms to CON Law Governor Brian Kemp signed a series of health-care bills aimed at improving access to quality medical services in rural Georgia. The most significant reform is to Georgia's Certificate of Need (CON) law, which has been criticized for hindering efforts to expand health care in rural areas. House Bill 1339 exempts rural hospitals from certain CON requirements, streamlining the process for hospital construction and service provision. STORY 2: Cherokee County Firefighters Honored for Outstanding Service Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services honored eight of its members during the "Breakfast with Our Best" event, hosted by the Cherokee County Fire Chief's Foundation. Fire Chief Eddie Robinson presented awards for various categories including Volunteer Member, Support Services Member, Special Operations Member, EMT, Paramedic, Firefighter, Fire Officer, and Chief Fire Officer of the Year. Additionally, the foundation presented a check to Sgt. Chris King, who is battling cancer, following a successful fundraiser that raised over $32,000. Firefighters face an increased risk of cancer, making support for those battling the disease a priority for the department and its foundation. STORY 3: Three Cherokee County Seniors Earn Top JROTC Scholarship Three seniors from the Cherokee County School District have been awarded the highly esteemed Air Force JROTC J-100 Character-in-Leadership Scholarship. The honored students are Davis Clanton from Etowah High School, Savannah Mouritsen from Sequoyah High School, and Sydney Watson from Cherokee High School. This illustrious scholarship is awarded to only 100 students across the globe annually. It provides full coverage for college tuition and fees at any public or private institution that hosts an Air Force ROTC program. In addition to this, recipients receive a generous $10,000 annual allowance for university housing. The scholarship selection criteria focus on academic excellence, leadership abilities, and a strong commitment to serve in the U.S. Air Force or Space Force. STAR students are high school seniors with the highest SAT score and top 10% GPA, selecting a STAR Teacher. Sikes chose Jason Hardin as her STAR Teacher. STORY 5: Marietta Man and Brother Arrested for Participation in Jan. 6 Capitol Breach Two Georgia men, Cepane Sarty of Marietta and Seth Sarty of Rockmart, face a series of felony and misdemeanor charges for their involvement in breaching the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. They are accused of assaulting law enforcement during the riot. The charges include assaulting officers, disorderly conduct, and unlawfully entering restricted areas. The brothers were arrested by the FBI and allegedly entered the Capitol building shortly after the initial breach, eventually reaching the office suite of then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. The investigation into the Capitol breach continues, with over 1,300 individuals charged so far. Anyone with information is urged to contact the FBI. STORY 7: Tax Relief Package Clears Georgia House The Georgia House of Representatives unanimously approved an election-year tax relief package, including measures introduced on behalf of Gov. Brian Kemp. House Bill 1015 would accelerate a state income tax cut, saving taxpayers about $1.1 billion by reducing the income tax rate from 5.49% to 5.39%. Another bill, House Bill 1019, proposes doubling the state's homestead tax exemption from $2,000 to $4,000, a change not seen since 1978. Additionally, House Bill 1021 aims to increase Georgia's child-tax deduction from $3,000 to $4,000. These bills now move to the state Senate for consideration. The cats were located in two sheds and a camper, with overfull litter boxes, piles of feces and urine, and poor ventilation. A strong ammonia smell was reported in one shed. Smith was released on a $2,500 bond and is prohibited from owning domesticated animals, livestock, or fowl. The cats were transported to the Cherokee County Animal Shelter. STORY 2: Cherokee School Board Approves Employee Bonuses The Cherokee County school board approved state-funded employee bonuses, extending the $1,000 bonus proposed by Gov. Brian Kemp to all eligible full-time CCSD employees. Additionally, a $500 bonus was approved for eligible part-time CCSD employees. The bonuses will be included in December paychecks on Dec. 29, costing about $2.1 million in local funding. Superintendent Brian Hightower credited the quick turnaround to the CCSD's Office of Financial Management. The move aligns with past actions by the district when state bonuses were issued. The superintendent praised the financial management team for facilitating the bonus distribution. STORY 3: Sawnee EMC Customers Will Get a Rate Decrease in 2024 Starting in January, members of Sawnee Electric Membership Corporation (EMC) will experience a decrease in their power bills. The EMC Board of Directors approved a retail rate decrease, impacting residential and most commercial accounts. The decrease is part of the Wholesale Power Cost Adjustment (WPCA), a billing component in most Sawnee EMC rate schedules. The WPCA adjusts periodically to account for fluctuations in wholesale power and other costs. The reduction will result in an average decrease of $16.63 per 1,000 kWh consumed for member-owners, compared to December 2023. The amendment responds to a change in the conceptual interior design, focusing on a lobby entrance, two stairwells, canopy system, and exterior wall, while proposing the removal of concrete stairs, restrooms, and an interior stairwell. The renovated building is intended to become part of the Cherokee County Justice Center campus. The project is expected to be ready for construction bidding in summer 2024. STORY 5: New Neighborhood Coming to Holly Springs The Courtyards at Redbud Lane in Holly Springs is now accepting sales for homes in its first phase. Developed by Epcon Communities, the community offers four home designs ranging from 1,500 to 4,000 square feet, with prices starting from the $400,000s. The Courtyards at Redbud Lane features 78 home sites and amenities such as a clubhouse, pool, dog park, and pickleball courts. The community aims to provide a lock-and-leave lifestyle in a convenient location within Cherokee County. Epcon Communities aims to offer residents excellent floor plans and amenities in addition to the desired lifestyle. Commercial: CHEROKEE CHAMBER – INGLES 5 STORY 6: Sixes Elementary Student Collects School Supplies for Classmates Third-grader Nolan Hendrix from Cherokee County took the initiative to give back to his school, Sixes Elementary School, during the holiday season. With support from his parents, Nolan wrote a letter and distributed 45 copies to his neighbors in BridgeMill, requesting donations of school supplies for his school. On December 2, he went door-to-door with a wagon, collecting the supplies. The generous act resulted in numerous donations, including paper, markers, tissues, and more. Nolan expressed joy in knowing that, with the help of his community, he could provide necessary supplies for his fellow Sixes students. STORY 7: Cherokee County Students Earn Honors for Adobe Technology Skills Cherokee County School District (CCSD) students received honors in the Adobe Express Challenge, a quarterly competition organized by CCSD's Technology and Information Services division. The Cherokee County District Attorney's Office announced the jury's verdict after a three-day trial. The charges stem from a February assault on McDaniel's girlfriend, during which he allegedly applied pressure to her neck, leaving visible marks. The victim, who escaped to a neighbor, reported incidents of domestic abuse. McDaniel will be sentenced in January. The case was investigated by the Cherokee Sheriff's Office and prosecuted by Deputy Chief Assistant District Attorney Rachel Ashe. STORY 2: Canton Man Sentenced to 20 Years of Prison for Child Sexual Abuse Jonathan Ricky Millwood, a Canton man, has been sentenced to two decades in prison after pleading guilty to charges including two counts of aggravated sexual battery, one count of aggravated child molestation, and one count of child molestation. The Canton Police Department investigated the case, initiated in March 2023 when a girl under 10 reported inappropriate touching by Millwood. The child's disclosure led to forensic interviews, a Sexual Assault Nurse Exam confirming male DNA, and Millwood's guilty plea. He received a 20-year prison sentence without parole, life probation, and lifetime registration as a sex offender. Millwood is prohibited from contacting the victim or her family. STORY 3: Two CCSD Students Win State Academic Quiz Bowl Two students from Cherokee County School District secured first place in statewide academic quiz bowl competitions. Woodstock High School senior Owen Markette topped the social studies quiz bowl, focusing on early American history, while Creekview High School sophomore Thomas Wang secured first place in the spelling quiz bowl. These achievements were part of the Georgia Career and Technical Instruction program's Fall Leadership Conference, where students from across the state participated in various academic and leadership events. The vigil, starting at 5:15 p.m., will include a moment of silence, prayer, and wreath-laying. The event aims to raise awareness about homelessness among veterans, with the program reporting a 32% increase in homeless veterans compared to the previous year. The public is invited to attend the vigil at the homeless veterans statue at Cherokee Veterans Park. The nonprofit emphasizes the growing concern for homeless female and senior veterans, as well as those with small children. On Monday, Cherokee County firefighters are investigating a van fire at a Waleska gas station. Responding just before 3:30 p.m. to the Valero station, they found a burning van with flames reaching the canopy and fuel pumps. Firefighters swiftly extinguished the fire, ensuring pump safety. A ladder truck was used to inspect the canopy for damage and hot spots. No injuries were reported, and though gas pumps were temporarily shut down, the store remained open. The grant comes with a 30% county match of $798,854, and the county is contributing an additional $127,695 to repave more roads. The county match is funded with Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax dollars. The Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a list of roads totaling 14.167 miles for GDOT consideration. The project is expected to be bid in the first quarter of 2024, with completion in the summer of 2024. STORY 2: Cherokee County Buying More CATS Propane Buses The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners in Georgia has approved the purchase of four propane-powered shuttle buses for the Cherokee Area Transportation System. Two buses will replace existing gasoline-powered ones, while the other two will expand the fleet. Each bus can accommodate 14 passengers. The total cost of the buses from ABC Bus, Inc. is $610,632, with the Federal Transit Administration funding 85% of the purchase ($519,037.20). The county will cover the remaining 15% ($91,594.80) through Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax funds. The new buses are expected to be delivered in spring 2024.     STORY 3: Cherokee County and Waleska Approve Growth Boundary Agreement Cherokee County and Waleska leaders have unanimously approved a 10-year growth boundary agreement. Under this agreement, the city of Waleska will limit annexations within a specified area, and the county will not oppose annexations within that area. While parcels within the growth boundary are not automatically eligible for annexation, they must still meet state law requirements. The growth boundary encompasses areas along Reinhardt College Parkway, Land Road, and Fincher Road. Both entities have also approved a memorandum of understanding outlining protocols for the growth boundary agreement, aligning character areas and land use plans within the designated area.   We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. The first allows licensed businesses in Waleska to serve malt beverages, wine, and distilled spirits on Sundays between 12:30 p.m. and 11 p.m. The second permits package sales of these beverages during the same hours on Sundays. Before businesses can implement Sunday alcohol sales, city leaders must update the municipal code of ordinances to align with the referendums' passage.   STORY 5: Holly Springs Leaders Considering Raises for City Employees The Holly Springs City Council is considering a 4.5% salary increase for all city employees, incorporating a 2% base salary raise and a 2.5% step increase. The proposed raises, totaling $95,000, are part of an annual market adjustment recommended by Condrey and Associates, Inc., the firm that updated the city's Employee Classification and Compensation Plan last year. The council is set to vote on the raises on November 20, and if approved, they would take effect on January 1, 2024.     Commercial: CHEROKEE CHAMBER - ELON – INGLES 3     STORY 6: Cherokee County Leaders Table Decision on Outdoor Storage Expansion The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners has once again postponed a decision on the request by Cumming Highway Storage to modify zoning conditions for expanding its storage business on Highway 20. The commissioners unanimously voted to table the decision until the November 21 meeting, as the attorney representing the applicant was unable to attend the recent meeting. The property in question, rezoned in 2019, is seeking to eliminate certain conditions to permit outdoor storage, revise the site plan, and add more storage space for boats and RVs. The commissioners had previously deferred a decision in October after residents expressed concerns about light pollution and other issues.   STORY 7: Woodstock Student Receives Optometry Scholarship Shelby Geiger, a first-year student pursuing a Doctor of Optometry degree at Southern College of Optometry in Memphis and hailing from Woodstock, received the SCO Alumni Endowed Scholarship award, amounting to an annual scholarship of $3,000 throughout her four-year doctorate program. The scholarship is awarded to an optometry student with at least a 3.0 GPA during their undergraduate studies or a minimum score of 320 on the Optometry Admission Test. The event, part of the "Constituent Services in Your Community" initiative, aims to help people navigate federal bureaucracy and access benefits such as Social Security, Medicare, passports, visas, and VA and TRICARE benefits for servicemembers, veterans, and their families. Ossoff's team is dedicated to helping constituents overcome administrative hurdles and provide support in accessing the benefits they deserve. Similar events are scheduled in other locations across the state in November. STORY 2: Cherokee County Sport Shooting Range Building Burned Down in Fire A clay shooting range building near Waleska, Georgia, known as Garland Mountain Sporting Clays & Grill, was destroyed in an early morning fire. Firefighters responded to the scene at 4:17 a.m., but the building was already mostly destroyed when they arrived. The fire had also spread to nearby golf carts and ignited spot fires in the surrounding woods. Cherokee County firefighters, along with assistance from Pickens County Fire & Rescue and the Georgia Forestry, managed to extinguish the main fire by 6:34 a.m. No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire is under investigation. The shooting range plans to rebuild and may establish a temporary structure for clay shooting in the meantime. STORY 3: Holly Springs Residents Invited to Weigh In On Proposed $62 Million Budget The Holly Springs City Council plans to hold a public hearing on November 6 to discuss the proposed budget for 2024, totaling $62.4 million. The budget includes funds for the Town Center and the Holly Springs Parkway widening project. Most of the budget increase is attributed to the Town Center Project, particularly the construction of a parking deck. The general fund budget is set at nearly $14 million, with a significant increase from the previous year. Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax funding, about $10 million, is allocated for the Holly Springs Parkway widening project. The budget also designates $15.3 million for the Town Center, with a portion transferred from Urban Redevelopment Agency funding. A 911 call was made at 4:07 p.m. local time, treated as a water rescue. An autopsy has been completed, but the cause of death is "deferred" pending toxicology reports, and "other significant conditions" contributed to his death. Perry had reportedly engaged in physical activity, including playing pickleball on the morning of his death. His struggles with addiction were well-documented, but as of his last reported sobriety, the cause of death remains uncertain. Toxicology results are expected in the coming weeks. Authorities do not suspect foul play. Matthew Perry, who was 54 years old when he died on October 28, 2023, had a net worth estimated at $120 million at the time of his death. The goal is to develop this area as a regional center with employment opportunities and mitigate traffic congestion. An intergovernmental agreement, with Cherokee County responsible for 60% of the plan's cost and Holly Springs and Woodstock responsible for 20% each, has been approved to facilitate the project. STORY 8: 13-Year-Old From Cherokee County Reunited With Family The teenager who went missing in early October, Gladis Bautista Escobar, has been found and reunited with her parents. She had been reported missing from Cherokee County on October 7. Authorities, including the Canton Police Department and other agencies, collaborated on the investigation to locate her. Gladis had left a Creekview High School football game willingly with another student, and she posted to social media with a changed appearance during her absence. The heat index might surpass 100 due to high humidity. Cherokee County anticipates highs of 93 to 96 degrees through the week. A heat advisory was in effect for parts of west and central Georgia. MUST Ministries has opened a cooling center in Marietta to offer relief, operating from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. when temperatures hit 90 or higher. The health department suggests wearing light clothing, staying in air-conditioned places, avoiding hot meals, and limiting outdoor activities.   Story 3: carr   Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr is urging a federal judge to reconsider a preliminary injunction that blocked a law limiting medical care for transgender minors. Carr's motion, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, references a recent U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruling that lifted a similar preliminary injunction in Alabama. The injunction in question was issued in response to a challenge against Senate Bill 140, which prohibits hormone replacement therapy for gender dysphoria treatment in adolescents. The judge ruled that the law violates transgender minors' rights under the 14th Amendment. This will raise the fee from $4 to $5 per month for each equivalent residential unit. The change is aimed at generating revenue for annual replacements of stormwater infrastructure. The fee is included in property owners' tax bills. Additionally, the council unanimously voted to submit the city's comprehensive plan to the Atlanta Regional Commission and the Department of Community Affairs for review. There's a proposal to change the development character area map, allowing commercial use with residential areas. The council also approved adjustments to park rental fees and a liquor store application. Additionally, CCSD teachers, principals, and school PTAs received various awards for their exceptional contributions, professionalism, partnerships, and community engagement. Superintendent Brian Hightower expressed his gratitude for the PTA's continuous support and the dedication of the honorees. Booth Middle School, has won the top prize of $100 in the 2023 Georgia Farm Bureau Middle School Bookmark Contest. Her entry was recognized as the best in GFB's First District, encompassing 15 counties in northwest Georgia. The contest, aimed at encouraging students to explore agriculture and create artwork inspired by their learning, is sponsored by Georgia Farm Bureau. On August 3rd, a Woodstock officer pursued a speeding vehicle that made unsafe lane changes on I-575. Several citizens, including Jaxson Rupert and Justin Shubert, helped locate the suspect within an apartment complex. Construction inspector James Stokes assisted in the pursuit by providing transportation and support. Off-duty Cobb County Police Department Lt. Lee Turman aided the Woodstock officer and citizen Stokes. Lastly, Henry Higgins helped stop the suspect, Bailey Avey, from fleeing before officers arrived. Their courageous and determined actions ensured the suspect's swift apprehension, earning them recognition from the Woodstock Police Chief Robert Jones during the city council meeting.   Story 9:  apartments   Novare Group, Batson-Cook Development Co., and PointOne Holdings are collaborating on a new apartment complex project in southwest Cherokee County near Acworth. Novare Group's President and CEO, Jim Borders, expressed pride in the successful collaboration and commitment to creating a development that aligns with the area's vision and exceeds residents' expectations. In Canton, Mayor Bill Grant is facing a challenger, Andy Tubbs, for the mayorship. Councilmember Travis Johnson has qualified for Ward 1, Shawn Tolan for Ward 2, and a special election for the vacant Ward 2 seat has two candidates: Luke Smith and Samantha Barker. For Ward 3, candidates Tracye Busbee and Farris Yawn have qualified. Qualifying continues on August 22 and 23 at Canton City Hall. In Woodstock, council members David Potts of Ward 2 and Tracy Collins of Ward 4 have qualified. The Ward 6 seat currently held by Rob Usher is still vacant. The Cherokee Sheriff's Office investigated the incident after the victim reported it on July 31. Patel, a male sonographer from Canton, was charged with sexual assault by a hospital employee with a patient. Following evidence that supported the allegations, Patel turned himself in and was released on a $5,700 bond from the Cherokee Adult Detention Center. The moratorium was initially imposed to facilitate coordinated planning between the county and local cities to ensure quality development and address traffic congestion concerns in the I-575 and Sixes Road Interchange Area. The Comprehensive Plan, which designates the area as a "Wild Cat" character zone, emphasizing major employment and mixed-use development, has been adopted. Plans for transportation improvements are underway through intergovernmental agreements with surrounding cities. Other approved actions include funding agreements, land purchases, and program allocations for community development and housing initiatives.   Story 3: hornet   The Georgia Department of Agriculture (GDA) has confirmed the detection of a living yellow-legged hornet in Georgia for the first time, marking the first instance of a live yellow-legged hornet detected in the open United States. The GDA, in collaboration with the USDA and the University of Georgia, is urging the public to report sightings of this non-native hornet species that could potentially threaten honey production, native pollinators, and the agricultural industry. A beekeeper in Savannah reported the sighting, and the identification was confirmed by the USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. The project not only aims to help the community but also allows the junior scouts to work towards earning the Bronze Award, the highest honor for a junior scout. The program aims to educate parents about school boards and district operations, filling in knowledge gaps. The funds, relating to administrative fees, interest fees, and employer penalties, were transferred to the treasury as required by law. These funds had been withheld during the tenure of former Labor Commissioner Mark Butler. The audit, dated August 4, does not accuse the GDOL of fraudulent activity but points to a legal dispute over the agency's right to retain the money. The audit emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability. State and federal agencies are involved in an ongoing investigation into the matter. The current Labor Commissioner, Bruce Thompson, aims to restore transparency and cooperation within the agency.   Story 3: dates   Cherokee County cities have announced qualifying dates for the upcoming municipal elections on November 7. Canton, Woodstock, and Waleska are among the cities with seats set to expire. In Canton, positions for council seats in multiple wards and the mayoral seat are expiring. Qualifying will be held at Canton City Hall from August 21 to August 23, with fees based on a percentage of the position's annual salary. In Woodstock, council seats in several wards are expiring. Qualifying will take place at the Woodstock Annex from August 21 to August 23, with a set fee for council qualification. Waters went 3 for 5 with two RBIs, and several Royals players recorded multiple hits. Adam Duvall hit a solo home run for the Red Sox, but their offense was relatively quiet. The Royals improved their season record to 37-78, with Waters' notable performance including a two-run homer. Water started slowly this season and battled some nagging injuries, but has heated up of late.   Story 9:  Ranked   Two-time defending national champions, the Georgia Bulldogs, have secured the top spot in the 2023 preseason coaches poll, receiving 61 out of 66 first-place votes. The Bulldogs are set to kick off their season against Tennessee-Martin. Michigan ranks second, its highest preseason ranking in the coaches poll's history. Alabama takes the third spot, followed by Ohio State at fourth. LSU claims the fifth position, making the SEC responsible for three of the top five slots. The Big Ten has three teams in the top 10, with a total of four in the top 25. The incident occurred less than a mile from the Cherokee County Animal Shelter. The women had initially taken the puppies to the shelter but left after being asked to wait in their car due to a cat in the lobby and not having their ID ready. They later abandoned the puppies on the side of the road in a pink storage tote without water, proper ventilation, or shade. The agreement allows both parties to support annexations into the city within certain areas. The proposal includes an expiration date of Aug. 23, 2054. Additionally, the council discussed updates on pedestrian crossing projects, including the Downtown to The Mill at West Main Pedestrian Corridor project and the Riverstone Parkway Pedestrian Crossing project. The council also held a public hearing on the city's 2040 comprehensive plan, which is required to be updated every five years. Residents will have several opportunities to provide input on the plan. Discussions on a potential concept plan for the North Canton Cottage Village are ongoing.   Story 3: rezoning   The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners approved the rezoning of a property in Hickory Flat owned by a local Chick-fil-A franchise owner, Kevin Williams. The property was rezoned for agricultural use, and Williams was asked to obtain a special use permit to use it as a commercial gathering space. The initial request to rezone part of the property to office institutional was denied, and the entire property was rezoned to agriculture. Williams plans to use the building as a meeting space for employees and other organizations. The board also approved an agreement with the Cherokee Office of Economic Development to allocate $1.5 million from federal American Rescue Plan Act grant funding for employment opportunities and the Be Pro Be Proud initiative.   We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Popp was selected as the high school student engagement manager for the company and is part of the Audio/Video Technology and Film Career Pathway program at Sequoyah High School. The program has achieved industry certification, and Popp's achievements highlight the value of Career Pathway programs in providing students with valuable skills and experiences for their future careers. Cherokee County School District praised Popp's commitment to excellence and his contributions to the school community.   Story 5: chamber   Eli Fox, a fifth-grade student at Woodstock Elementary School, received the Cherokee County Lemonade Day 2023 Youth Entrepreneur of the Year Award from the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce. Eli's lemonade stand, "Eli's Hero Lemonade," was recognized for its impressive business plan, including investors and paid employees. He sold various lemonade flavors, frozen lemonade, Arnold Palmers, and snacks, raising over $500. The award comes with a $100 prize and a private tour of First Horizon Bank's vault. Eli plans to spend, save, share, and continue selling lemonade. The program encourages financial literacy for students in grades 3-5.   Story 6: burn   The burn ban in unincorporated Cherokee County has been lifted to allow residents to dispose of storm debris caused by severe weather recently. The Georgia Environmental Protection Division agreed to lift the ban through October 1, enabling residents to burn trees, brush, and stumps resulting from the storm. Other storm debris, such as damaged housing, is classified as solid waste and cannot be burned. Routine land clearing burning of debris larger than 6 inches requires a permit from the Cherokee County Fire Marshal's Office. Restrictions on other types of open burning remain in effect. The charges against her include aggravated assault family violence, two counts of first-degree cruelty to children, one count of third-degree cruelty to children, and simple battery. The Cherokee Sheriff's Office states that Hargraves placed her foot on the throat of a 14-year-old girl, kicked her, and pulled her hair on July 24. She is also accused of kicking a 10-year-old in the abdomen area and knocking a man to the ground, kicking him on the leg. Hargraves is the aunt and great-aunt of the children involved. She was arrested on July 24 and is currently held in the Cherokee County jail without bond. ....……… Read more on this story at tribuneledgernews.com   STORY 2: capitol   A 21-year-old Georgia man, Bruno Cua, has been sentenced to one year and a day in prison for assaulting a law enforcement officer during the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. He also received 36 months of supervised release. Cua attended the rally at the Washington Monument with his parents before heading to the Capitol. He separated from his parents, entered the building armed with a baton, and violently shoved a Capitol Police officer trying to lock the doors to the Senate Gallery. Cua later admitted on social media that he took part in the attack using violence and suggested more violence might be necessary in the future. Over 1,070 people have been arrested in all 50 states in connection with the January 6 attack.   Story 3: produce   Cherokee County School District has secured a state grant through the Georgia Local Food for Schools pilot program. This grant will enable CCSD School Nutrition to expand its partnerships with local farmers and food producers, increasing the availability of fresh produce in school meals. The initiative complements CCSD's already successful Farm to School program, which has boosted the inclusion of locally-grown fruits, vegetables, and other ingredients in school breakfasts and lunches. All CCSD schools offer fresh fruits and vegetables as side choices and provide fresh salads as daily lunch entrée options. The new program will provide even more options for students to enjoy nutritious meals and support their learning. The pilot program will be implemented in the upcoming school year, thanks to the efforts of CCSD School Nutrition Executive Director Tina Farmer and culinary specialist Jessica Emmett.   Back in a moment   Break:  ESOG - Drake – Heller   STORY 4: nutrition   Cherokee County School District has introduced a new awards program to recognize top school nutrition teams. Called the "School Nutrition Team of the Year" awards, cafeteria teams had the opportunity to win prizes by achieving specific goals related to improving their service to students, teachers, and staff. The winners were announced on July 26 at the department's annual back-to-school training. Clark Creek Elementary School STEM Academy and E.T. Booth Middle School were named the winners in the elementary and middle/high school/center divisions, respectively. The winning teams received various prizes, including gift cards, special shirts, and kitchen equipment for their school. The awards program aims to encourage program improvement and provide recognition for the hard work of the School Nutrition teams in serving nutritious meals to students.   Story 5: goshen   The Goshen Valley Foundation, a local nonprofit focused on helping children in foster care, is renovating a building in Canton to create the Goshen Family Resource Center. The center will offer a range of mental health services to families and will be operated under Goshen Therapeutic Services. The project is part of Goshen's prevention efforts to provide support and therapy to at-risk families, aiming to keep fewer children from entering the foster care system. The center will offer various types of therapy, counseling, and family support. Renovations have started, and the center is expected to open in 2024. The foundation has received a grant from the Georgia Department of Human Services to support the initiative. The center will also serve as a hub for connecting families with other necessary resources like affordable housing and employment coaching. The foundation has raised funds for renovations and is seeking additional support for the project.   Story 6: townhomes   The Woodstock City Council has postponed a developer's request to build a 29-unit townhome community on a 2.7-acre parcel. The developer, Michelle Horstemeyer for The JW Collection, needs conditional use permits to build attached units and a residential development on the small parcel. Some nearby residents expressed concerns about the lack of a concrete master plan and how the development will impact the area. The property is close to the South on Main neighborhood, which has the same developer, and there is a need to update the master plan to accommodate the proposed townhomes. The council voted 5-0 to table the request for 60 days to allow time for the creation of a master plan. Additionally, the council ratified the purchase of land for road improvements and approved alcohol licenses for two restaurants.   Back with more after this   Commercial: Dayco – Ingles 3 – GON30 Story 7: pro   Caleb Bartolero, a former standout baseball player from Woodstock, signed an undrafted free-agent deal with the Los Angeles Angels after the 2023 MLB Draft. He had a successful high school career, leading Woodstock to deep playoff runs and earning a spot on the Class 7A all-state team. Bartolero played college baseball at Troy, where he had an impressive career, ranking in the program's record books for hits and doubles. The Angels' farm system is ranked 28th, and Bartolero joins fellow Troy teammate Ben Thompson, who also signed with the team. The Angels have promising prospects in Logan O'Hoppe and Zach Neto.   Story 8:  reinhardt   Reinhardt University's athletic department has hired former volleyball standout Holly Heath for the 2023-24 season. Heath, a recent graduate, will take on the role of Eagles' Athletic Operations Coordinator and Assistant Sports Information Director. She holds a Master's in Sports Administration and Leadership from the university and has been involved in gameday operations for the past two years. During her time as a student, Heath achieved academic success and excelled in volleyball, earning All-Conference honors and contributing to three AAC Championships. The university has also made other staff changes, including new coaches for men's soccer and women's basketball. Final thoughts after this   Story 9:  clemmons   Chase Clemmons, a former Etowah point guard, organized a back-to-school event at the Salvation Army's Marietta facility before starting his college basketball career at Kennesaw State. The event was successful, with over 50 book bags given out to 70 kids. Clemmons is eager to make a positive impact both on and off the court as a student-athlete. As of Saturday afternoon, over 3,000 customers were still without power, with most connected to an outage in east Cherokee. Wind speeds in parts of the Clayton community reached 90-95 miles per hour, equivalent to an EF-1 tornado, causing damage in northern and eastern Cherokee. Utility crews have been working to restore power, and the Cherokee County Emergency Management Agency is conducting damage assessment over the next few days. The Concept2, Inc. Erg Ed grant, valued at $45,000, was awarded to CCSD by the George Pocock Rowing Foundation. Only two school districts nationwide received this grant, which includes 20 Concept2 rowing machines, adaptive equipment, curriculum, and teacher training. The Erg Ed program focuses on teaching rowing fundamentals, goal setting, and teamwork. CCSD middle schools and ACE Academy will incorporate a two-week rowing unit into their PE classes this school year. Teachers have undergone Learn to Row training, provided by the Allatoona Rowing Association, a partner in this initiative. The program aims to introduce rowing to approximately 10,000 middle school students in the local community.   Story 3: Back to School   As the new school year approaches, families in need of school supplies can receive help from various organizations. The TCC Verizon retail store in Holly Springs is participating in the School Rocks Backpack Giveaway on July 30, a national initiative. Southern Nuclear, along with Georgia Power, has submitted 364 inspections, tests, and analyses to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for the second unit. This step ensures the NRC that the reactor meets nuclear safety and quality standards. Once the NRC confirms license acceptance criteria are met, fuel loading can commence. The second unit is expected to begin operating late this year or early next year, while the first unit is on track to be operational by the end of this month. The reactors faced delays and higher costs, but Georgia Power maintains nuclear power is essential for reliable energy for its 2.7 million customers.   Story 6: all state   Eleven Cherokee County baseball players earned all-state recognition, with Etowah senior Will Curcio headlining the list as a first-team infield selection in Class 6A. Curcio led the Eagles to a No. 3 seed and back to the final four. Etowah had three players on the list, including senior catcher Haiden Schultz (second team) and junior pitcher Caleb Hughes (honorable mention). River Ridge also had three players recognized, including Cherokee County Pitcher of the Year JD Rediger, who secured a first-team spot. David Dove, the governor's executive counsel, will serve as interim director of the EPD while continuing in his current role. Walter Rabon, currently the deputy commissioner of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR), will assume the role of commissioner, replacing Mark Williams, who will become the executive director of the Jekyll Island Authority. Russell Carlson, the chief health policy officer for the state Department of Community Health, will become the commissioner of the health agency, succeeding Caylee Noggle. The new appointments will take effect on July 1 and August 1, respectively.   Story 3: 70k   The Cherokee County Educational Foundation held its inaugural Sporting Clays Classic shooting event at Garland Mountain in Waleska, raising $70,000. Superintendent Brian Hightower expressed pride in Brooks' accomplishments and her dedication to preparing students for future success.   Story 5: widening   The city of Woodstock has been awarded a $1.5 million loan and an $825,000 grant from the Georgia Transportation Infrastructure Bank to fund a widening project for Towne Lake Parkway. The project aims to provide traffic relief by widening the road between Mill Street and Woodstock Parkway. The funding will be used to widen the travel lanes, including a dedicated right turn lane onto Woodstock Parkway, and extend the sidewalk in the area. Construction is expected to begin in early 2024. Woodstock Mayor Michael Caldwell expressed gratitude for the funding, emphasizing the importance of investing in infrastructure to support the city's growth.   Story 6:  angelakos   Dimitri Angelakos, a standout athlete at Etowah High School, has committed to playing baseball at Georgia Tech. Angelakos played a key role in Etowah's baseball and basketball successes, including reaching the state championship in baseball and the state semifinals in basketball. Despite an arm injury, Angelakos impressed on the mound with his pitching skills. He is also a talented hitter, contributing to Etowah's offense. Angelakos chose baseball over basketball for college and looks forward to competing at a higher level. As a nationally accredited agency, the marshal's office must comply with established standards and demonstrate a commitment to upholding them. To facilitate public input, CALEA has established a public access portal where residents can provide comments, commendations, or any information relevant to the agency's quality of service. Feedback can be submitted through the CALEA website, the marshal's office website, or their Facebook page. This initiative encourages community engagement and helps ensure the agency's ongoing adherence to professional standards.   Story 3: wake   During the 2023 legislative session, the Georgia General Assembly passed House Bill 121, which introduces new regulations for wakeboarding and wakesurfing activities on state waters. The aim of the legislation is to enhance safety, promote responsible water sports, and preserve public and private property. The key provisions of the bill, effective from July 1, include distance restrictions, requiring a minimum distance of 200 feet from moored vessels, structures, shorelines near residences, parks, and other public areas. Cherokee Youth Basketball is a local recreational league open to youth from kindergarten through 12th grade. The program has seen remarkable growth, with 556 teams and over 4,000 participants. It provides a safe and competitive environment for players to develop character, sportsmanship, and teamwork. NACPRO is a non-profit organization that promotes county and regional park and recreation issues. The land was donated to the church in 2018, and the project leaders, including Senior Adult Pastor Alvin Emmett and Project Director Tiffanie Miller, envision it as a versatile space for activities such as mountain biking, hiking, and reflection. The park's opening will occur in phases, with the first phase featuring a prayer garden modeled after Ruth Graham's prayer garden in Asheville. He was charged with felony theft by taking. The arrest warrant, filed by the Canton Police Department in November, stated that McClinton pocketed cash from customer deposits while working at a Canton area new car dealership. He deposited a small amount of the money to the business and took a total of $27,940. McClinton was released a couple days ago after posting a $5,000 bond.. Read more on this story at tribuneledgernews.com     STORY 2: station   Cherokee County has recently opened a new fire station, Fire Station 29, located on Highway 20 near Autumn Brook Drive in Canton. The station officially went into service on June 11, as announced by the Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services. The addition of this station is expected to significantly reduce response times in that area of Cherokee County. The fire station is currently equipped with one staffed fire engine and has a team of six firefighters assigned to it. The opening of this station follows the county's purchase of a modular home in December, which served as temporary housing for the firefighters until a more permanent station could be constructed. The construction of the fire station is funded by the 2024 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST).   Story 3: firefighters   Lt. Dave Burnaugh, a firefighter who has been battling brain and kidney cancer, has returned to his station after a 10-month absence. Firefighters from Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services, along with neighboring departments, gathered at Fire Station 32 to welcome him back. Lt. Burnaugh, a 16-year veteran, fell ill while on duty last year and was later diagnosed with a Stage 3 astrocytoma brain tumor and a Stage 1 kidney tumor. He underwent brain surgery, radiation, kidney surgery, and chemotherapy. "Buzz" Ahrens Recreation Center to discuss ongoing and future recreation and parks projects. The summit aimed to facilitate communication and collaboration among those responsible for planning, funding, and implementing recreational opportunities in the county. Updates were provided by Ball Ground, Canton, Cherokee County, Holly Springs, and Woodstock, while Waleska was absent. Several projects were discussed, including the Long Swamp Creek Recreation Area, the Yellow Creek Road Conservation Area and Trails, a community park near Clark Creek Elementary School, and a park in the Hickory Flat area. The choir is open to singers aged 10 to 14 who have a passion for music and a desire to learn. Martha Shaw, known for her successful leadership of children's choirs at Clayton State University, has been recognized for her choirs' achievements, including performances with prestigious orchestras and at renowned venues. He recently secured the NCAA outdoor championship in the 800-meter run, setting a school record with a time of 1:44.26 in the finals. Sumner's victory helped Georgia achieve a seventh-place team finish. His time not only broke the stadium record but also placed him fifth on the all-time collegiate list. Sumner became the first freshman to win the NCAA title in the 800 since 2017. He was particularly inspired by Donovan Brazier, the previous freshman champion and an American record-holder. Sumner also earned the SEC's indoor and outdoor Freshman Runner of the Year titles and received first-team All-American honors.     Story 7: Baseball   Here's an update on some area baseball alums now playing professionally……Etowah alum Drew Waters has returned to the Kansas City Royals in the major leagues after coming off the injured list. Waters has had a slow start with a .184 average, but he recently picked up two hits and an RBI. He is now back to his regular role in the outfield. On the other hand, Sequoyah alum Hunter Gaddis was optioned back to the Triple-A affiliate of the Cleveland Guardians after his third stint with the big-league club. He had a 5.17 ERA in eight appearances. Luke Berryhill, a River Ridge alum, has a six-game hitting streak in Triple-A and has improved his season average to .228. Brennan Milone, former Woodstock star, continues to impress in Single-A with a .280 average, 29 RBIs, and seven home runs. Mayor   Walton Davis Jr., a respected figure in Canton who served as both mayor and city council member, is fondly remembered for his determination and zest for life. Davis, who passed away at the age of 92, was known for his quiet resilience and strong spiritual values. He was a loving husband, father, and a man who cherished life with purpose and grace. During his tenure as mayor from 1986 to 1989, Davis implemented changes such as privatizing the garbage service, demonstrating his forward-thinking mindset. Although some residents initially opposed this decision, Davis recognized the city's potential for growth and aimed to propel Canton forward. He also appointed the first Black city council member, John Heard, and the first woman, Margaret Logan, both of whom he valued and maintained close friendships with. Walton Davis Jr. leaves behind a legacy of leadership, vision, and meaningful connections within the Canton community.   STORY 2: Drive By   A man from Dallas, Georgia, named Steven Nance, has been indicted by a Cherokee County grand jury on multiple charges related to a shooting incident at a Holly Springs home. The arrest was made by the Paulding County Sheriff's Office SWAT Team in collaboration with Holly Springs investigators. The charges against Nance include three counts of aggravated assault, two counts of stalking, one count of aggravated assault family violence, one count of criminal damage to property, and one count of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. The incident took place in March when shots were fired at a residence on Palm Street, but fortunately, no injuries were reported. Nance has been in custody at the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center without bond since his booking in March. It is important to note that an indictment represents formal charges, and individuals are considered innocent until proven guilty.   Story 3: Ball Ground   The Ball Ground City Council has unanimously approved a $6 million budget for the 2023-2024 fiscal year. The budget includes a general fund of approximately $2.1 million, which is $422,590 more than the previous year. The city plans to increase property tax revenue by $250,000 through growth and a tax increase. The additional revenue will be used to create two new entry-level positions in the Ball Ground Police Department, allowing the department to operate 24/7. The budget also allocates funds for administrative expenses, reserve funds, and contingencies. The water and sewer budget is around $2.2 million, reflecting rate increases to cover operational costs. Langford has been a dependable source of knowledge and a supportive presence for both colleagues and students. Originally joining Reinhardt as a fresh graduate from Emory University, he expected to stay for just a few years. However, as the university grew, Langford became ingrained in the Reinhardt community, which he describes as a family and a home. Colleagues praise Langford for his kindness, professionalism, and extensive knowledge beyond academia. Langford's leadership has guided the transformation of the Hill Freeman Library and Spruill Learning Center to adapt to the digital age. His presence will be greatly missed by his colleagues, who admire him as a rock and a mentor.   Story 5: Pope   A Pope High School's baseball team secured a 15-3 victory against River Ridge in Game 2 of their Class AAAAAA state playoff matchup. With a 10-4 win in Game 1, Pope advanced to the state title series for the second consecutive year. They will face the winner of the Houston County vs. Etowah matchup. Pope's dominant second inning, which included eight runs, propelled them to victory. Pitcher JD Rediger started for River Ridge but struggled against Pope's offense. Pope's coach, Chris Turco, credited the team's adjustment to their strike zone after the first inning. Pope hopes to continue their success in the title series and secure their second consecutive championship     Story 6: Track   Cherokee County had a strong showing at the Class AAAAAA track and field state championships. Three athletes from the county emerged as individual champions. Zane Gibson from Etowah won the boys pole vault, clearing 15 feet, 6 inches. Keira Hight from Sequoyah dominated the girls pole vault, clearing 12-0. Kyndal McKinney from Woodstock secured victory in the girls shot put with a personal-best throw of 44-6. In total, Cherokee County had 16 athletes place in the top 15 of their events, with notable performances from Luke Stradley, Sierra Reid, and other talented athletes across various disciplines. The Waleska City Council in Georgia has held a first reading of two proposed resolutions that would allow the citizens of the city to vote on whether they want to allow Sunday alcohol sales. The referendums would consider the sale of malt beverages, wine, and distilled spirits, as well as alcoholic beverages for consumption on the premises on Sundays. The vote on the resolutions will likely take place during the general election scheduled for November 7, and if approved, it may take until January 2024 before the necessary amendments to the city code are made to permit Sunday alcohol sales Chick-fil-A Canton franchisee Kevin Williams has awarded scholarships to employees across three locations. Scholarships range from $1,000 to $2,500 and total over $200,000. In addition, the Alex Gomez Scholarship, which covers 100% of tuition, was awarded to 18 Chick-fil-A Canton team members. Williams started the Alex Gomez Scholarship in 2021, which now provides full tuition to Point University. Chick-fil-A Canton restaurants have awarded over $1 million in local scholarship dollars to team members since 2017. The scholarship awards team members based on academics, community service and operator recommendations, and team members must be employed by Chick-fil-A Canton to be eligible. Woodstock welcomed a new Starbucks location into Adair Park's mixed-use development Saturday. The location was first announced in October 2021 and will finally open their doors for the first time at 6 a.m. Saturday. Adair Park is located at 8256 Main St. in downtown Woodstock. Adair Park posted updates on its Facebook page marking the progress of construction and announced the grand opening online as well. The store is offering a 10% discount through April 23 if customers show the post announcing the opening, according to Adair Park. Reinhardt University recognized its outstanding faculty, junior and senior students at an event called Evening of Honors. Two seniors, Lauren Dose and Deborah Blount, received the traditional and non-traditional Student of the Year awards, respectively. Dose was one of the first students to land a book deal while pursuing an undergraduate degree, and Blount is preparing to graduate at 64 years old with a 4.0 GPA and has created a scholarship in memory of her deceased husband. The university also presented several other awards, including the Engaged Learner award and the Faculty Mentor Award, and recognized students who hold high GPAs. River Ridge High School's soccer team secured a convincing 10-0 victory against Newnan in the opening round of the Class AAAAAA state playoffs. The Knights scored three goals in the first four minutes, with eight different players eventually finding the net. The match was called three minutes into the second half, following GHSA rules on the mercy rule. River Ridge will play against Sprayberry in the Sweet 16. Twelve Cherokee County School District students were selected to the Georgia Governor's Honors Program, the district announced.  The program selects academically excelling rising juniors and seniors throughout Georgia to participate in a four-week long summer curriculum at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro. These students were “selected based on overall excellence in academics, extra-curricular activities and leadership, as well as exceptional skills and talents in a specific area of study,” according to CCSD. Georgia's General Assembly passed a bill in the final moments of this year's legislative session that safeguards the public's right to fish in navigable parts of the state's rivers and streams. This move came after a property owner along Yellow Jacket Shoals in the Flint River claimed exclusive control of fishing from the bank on its side of the river to the center of the stream, leading to a lawsuit and an agreement that the Georgia Department of Natural Resources signed consenting to the ban. The fishing rights bill, Senate Bill 115, narrowly passed the House and Senate and now heads to Governor Brian Kemp's desk for signature. Over 100 Cherokee County School District singers were recently selected to perform with the district's annual Elementary School Honor Chorus. The program welcomed 116 select students, who included representatives from all of CCSD's 23 elementary schools, for a day of learning and performance. Under the direction of guest clinician Amanda Dodd and accompanied by Marcena Kinney, the students spent the day rehearsing at the Falany Performing Arts Center at Reinhardt University in Waleska.  A portion of Towne Lake Parkway westbound will be closed for a little over two hours February 11 for the annual Guns and Hoses 5K, the Cherokee Sheriff's Office announced. The run is taking place from 7:15 to about 9:30 a.m. February 11 at Hobgood Park near Woodstock. According to the sheriff's office, traffic on Towne Lake Parkway and Wyngate Parkway will be affected. Westbound traffic on Towne Lake Parkway from Rose Creek Drive to Bells Ferry Road will be diverted onto Rose Creek Drive. Eastbound traffic on Towne Lake Parkway will not be affected. Wyngate Parkway will be closed to both directions of travel from Watkins Glen Drive to Towne Lake Parkway. Drivers are asked to use caution if traveling in the area. Cherokee County leaders, parks officials, Cherokee Chamber members and county residents gathered at Cherokee Veterans Park Friday morning for the opening of the county's new recreation center. The L.B. “Buzz” Ahrens Recreation Center, nicknamed “The Buzz,” is the latest project from Cherokee Recreation and Parks Agency. The center, located at 7345 Cumming Highway in the Macedonia area of northeast Cherokee, is the second indoor recreation center for CRPA, in addition to its facility on Main Street near Woodstock. The center is over 30,000 square feet and has full-size and youth-size basketball courts and rock-climbing wall. The center also has an aerobics and dance studio, an open fitness area and two classrooms. There is additional office space for CRPA staff and a meeting hall area with an attached kitchen to allow for catered events. The namesake of the new $10.5 million recreation center, former Cherokee County Commission Chair Buzz Ahrens, was honored with a proclamation at the ribbon cutting ceremony. He spoke about the importance of the center. In continuing support of music education in Cherokee County, Cherokee Chorale has donated $500 to each of the seven middle schools in the school district.  Choral teachers from each school received the big check on Jan. 31 by Chorale Founding Director Don Stafford, Conductor Scott Martin and President Richard Landolt. Funds from this donation would be used to support the programs by buying more and new music for students, paying for transportation to competitions and hosting special choral events by the school. Cherokee Chorale also offers the Judith MacMillan Scholarship, a $1,000 fund established in 2007 to go towards a Cherokee County student who pursues choral music performance or education at Reinhardt University. The Cherokee Chorale's next performance is at 4 p.m. on March 19 at the Falany Performing Arts Center in Waleska.  Reinhardt's football team brought in a multitude of new faces during Wednesday's National Signing Day. Among the 54 signees — all from within Georgia's borders — were Jayden Ponder, a workhorse running back from Allatoona High School in Acworth, and a heavy focus on defensive backs. Reinhardt coach James Miller brought in 12 defensive backs, looking to continue the program's reputation of strong defenses. With key defensive players Kenneth Lowery, Jon Perry and others leaving, the Eagles also added eight linebackers and four defensive linemen. Among those defensive backs was Etowah's Jamir Maxime, who recorded 35 tackles, 14 pass breakups and two interceptions during the 2022 season. On the offensive side, the Eagles signed nine offensive linemen, eight receivers, seven running backs, two tight ends and two quarterbacks. They also brought in three recruits simply listed as “athletes”, which means they have the potential to play a variety of positions.  A Canton businessman and lifelong city resident has announced his intention to run for the vacant ward 2 seat on the Canton City Council. Bryan Roach, 46, announced his plans Friday to run for the seat left by former councilmember Will Carlan in the November 7 city election. Roach said in his announcement that he will listen to the concerns of the constituents in his ward and the city as a whole, as well as provide fiscally responsible leadership. Roach said that, if elected, he would continue to expand and develop the downtown district and improve relationships with other local leaders and stakeholders. Roach is a community volunteer and serves on the Hospital Authority of Cherokee County for Northside Hospital Cherokee. He also served as the vice chairman of the Cherokee County Parks and Recreation Board of Advisors from 2011 to 2014, as well as volunteering as a youth baseball and football coach for many years. Arnold Mill Elementary School's garden has been revitalized by the work of the school's Garden Club and Boy Scout Pack 625, thanks to a grant given by the Cherokee County Educational Foundation. On January 28, the two groups came together to rebuild the vegetable garden located next to the gym, the Arnold Mill Elementary Garden Club announced. The spring harvest of this garden will be donated to food pantries in Cherokee County. Cherokee County educator Denise Forward and Boy Scout leaders Troy Kind and David Stern oversaw the project. The school also received donations from Super Slab Store, LLC for the lumber and Discount Express Tree Service for the mulch. The Black Market Trust, an American pop and jazz group, will perform at 3 p.m. Nov. 13 at the Falany Performing Arts Center, 7300 Reinhardt Circle in Waleska.
