Today is the first of a few special episodes. We're talking Spinal Tap with Scott Reeder of Kyuss, Kellii Scott of Failure, Dizzy Reed of Guns N Roses, and Jason Achilles, who's put microphones on Mars with NASA's JPL. What brings all of these amazing people together? A charity album for Teen Cancer America that I started three and a half years ago. It's coming out on Sept 16th and the only way to get over 30 tracks of Spinal Tap covers is to follow the show and Teen Cancer America's social media. In this episode we talk about what the movie means to each of us, favorite scenes, favorite songs, and how these guys chose the song they covered. They also discuss some real life Spinal Tap moments in their own careers, the key to singing comedic songs, and pro tips on buying the best rubber chickens.Keep following here and Teen Cancer America for covers by these amazing musicians, Robyn Hitchcock, Crippled Black Phoenix, Alain Johannes, members of Soul Asylum, Tool, Foo Fighters, Mastodon, and so many more, as well as a very special song performed by cancer survivors who've been helped by TCA. On the 26th edition of First Concert Memories, we go back to 1986 to hear the story of one young rock fan's first ever Van Halen concert. Our Pantheon Podcasts brother Ilan Fong of What's Hot in the Strip Clubs was only 8 or 9 years old when he heard his older sister playing Van Halen I on her stereo. From that moment, his life was changed and was always curious about the music coming from the rooms of his older siblings. He'd wanted to see the 1984 tour but he was too young and his older brother told him because he'd just seen the Diver Down Tour, he would sit out 1984 and then take Ilan to the next one. The only problem there is the band broke up. David Lee Roth went solo and Van Halen famously replaced him with former Montrose singer Sammy Hagar. Hear how Ilan looked forward to finally seeing his guitar hero Eddie Van Halen perform his immortal solo live in Pittsburgh in August of 1986. We dissect the setlist (so few Dave era songs), discuss what Sammy was up to while the other guys did their solos, and where it ranked among all the Van Halen and David Lee Roth live shows. And as a bonus, he tells a story of intrigue with Guns N Roses as they returned to Montreal for the first time after the Axl Rose meltdown that led to a riot. A tale of strip clubs, drug dealers, and snowball fights that you'll definitely enjoy! Formed from the ashes that has become COVID, Melbourne hard rock outfit XCALIBRE had the benefit of time on their side from the outset. Time to hone their craft. Time to practice. Time to plan. All of which proved fruitful when XCALIBRE hit the ground running, earning themselves slots alongside acts such as Van Halen, Aerosmith, Drowning Pool, Karnivool, and The Amity Affliction, among others. Their upward trajectory attracted the attention of rising Australian label XMusic, who snapped up the band and set about planning their next step, which begins this Friday, September 5, with the release of their single Gravity (Through It All). Not content to open their account with what is already a great track, XCALIBRE enlisted the help of two massive music identities in DJ Lethal (Limp Bizkit) and Marcos Curiel (P.O.D.) as guest artists, tracking the song in the home of Guns N Roses drummer Matt Sorum. While not a guaranteed recipe for success, pulling off that trifecta is an achievement in itself, especially for an up-and-coming band from Melbourne.HEAVY sat down with lead vocalist Daniel Marazita to find out more. We start by gauging his enthusiasm surrounding the impending release of Gravity."Yeah, we're just looking forward to getting it out," he smiled. "We did a lot of hard work on these tracks, so to have this one off the rank first… It's pretty exciting."We ask Daniel to tell us more about Gravity from a musical point of view."It's got a mixture of sounds with this one," he measured. "Brandon Friesen mixed it so we've got that electronic in the background, that real sort of - I hate to stereotype songs - but Linkin Park sounding with the rap and the big melodies. We've got that aggression, but we still keep a sound within it, which is really important."In the full interview, Daniel also discussed the music video, which features creative visuals, the collaboration with DJ Lethal from Limp Bizkit and Marcos Curiel from P.O.D., including how their contributions enriched the song through electronic programming and distinctive guitar sounds. He emphasized the collaborative spirit during the creation of their upcoming debut album X, noting that Gravity represents just a fraction of the album's diversity, which will include a mix of heavy, soft, and crossover tracks. Plans for live performances were spoken about, along with upcoming plans and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

It's time for one of those huge episodes. Well, it's a 3 parter anyways. The 90s was a stinker of a decade for horror. That's what history tells us, well, let's investigate our selves because the old saying goes that history is written by the victors and horror always wins. So what do I think was the very greatest horror movie that came out during 1994? Well, here we have the top 5. The worst 10. A slew of also rans. Plus some bangin' mates, a few J&B whiskey's and a 4+ hour running time. This is 1994, A Year In Horror. 0.33 - Natural Born Killers (w/ Stephen Hill)1.13.06 - Interview with a Vampire (w/ Ric Rawlins)1.54.10 - Outro

This week, we continue our coverage of the tenth anniversary of Night Demon's iconic debut album, Curse of the Damned. We turn our attention to the song "Heavy Metal Heat," perhaps Night Demon's ultimate party anthem. We hear from the guys how the song came into existence, how that riff is fundamental to the band's identity, how it progressed from demos to final version, and why it works so well as a singalong moment in the live set. Night Demon explain how the song is a cry for freedom, a statement that metal is life, and a party anthem all in one. Listen at nightdemon.net/podcast or anywhere you listen to podcasts! “There were some heroes and there were some zeroes…” BACK TO THE BEGINNING, the final concert performance by the O.G. lineup of BLACK SABBATH featuring Bill Ward, Geezer Butler, Tony Iommi, and Ozzy Osbourne (along with an all-star roster of top shelf rock & metal artists) was held at Villa Park in Aston, Birmingham, England on 05/07/2025 (that's July 5th, 2025 for people in the United States) and raised nearly $200 Million for charity. While BACK TO THE BEGINNING will go down in heavy metal history as “The Live Aid of Metal”, it also represents a significant turning point and an emotional marker for metal fans from all over the world who came to pay homage and bid a celebratory yet poignant farewell to the Founding Fathers of Heavy Metal and The Prince Of Darkness. Ladies, prepare to comprehend why Pantera playing Sabbath songs at a Zeppelin tribute is as much a faux pas as “showing up to a funeral wearing a bridal gown”, gentlemen, understand how Slipknot's Sid Wilson is an absolute genius when it comes to remembering landmark dates with that special someone, and as for everybody else, break out your assortment of relaxers and various modalities of twanglification and JOIN US as we celebrate Sabbath, Ozzy, and all things metal with our take on BACK TO THE BEGINNING. Today im joined by Rock Royalty - Matt Sorum. Matt has an enviable CV including such incredible names as The Cult, Guns N Roses, Velvet Revolver, Slash's Snakepit, Hollywood Vampires and his current gig with Billy Gibbons. Matt joins us from his beautiful home in Palm Springs for a great conversation about all things drums and music. Matt's love and enthusiasm for music is so obvious, and this comes across in the conversation! This was recorded on the day that Clem Burke sadly passed away, so of course we had to talk about the legendary drummer. Huge thanks to our lovely friend Simon kirke for connecting me up with Matt. Massive thanks to Matt for the great conversation.

Guns n Roses at 40 is a hardcover beast—sleek, embossed, and packed with full-color photos, gatefold timelines, and handmade Sunset Strip flyers. It's pure class with just the right amount of dirt under the nails. *This episode is sponsored by Motorbooks—one of my favorite sponsors because they always hook up the Rock Talk Studio audience with a chance to win great books! And with this sponsorship, they're taking it one step further by giving away two copies of Guns N' Roses at 40. All you need to do to enter is send me an email, and I'll enter you into the drawing. This guest just blew me away on every front imaginable. Welcome drummer David Abbruzzese to the show. If the name sounds familiar, it's probably because he was in the biggest band in the world at what I consider their peak. Dave played drums for Pearl Jam from 1991 to 1994. For me, this was when the band could do no wrong. But, as David tells me, there was a lot of crazy stuff going. That includes a cursed music video that was so bad it was not only trashed, it almost destroyed Dave's musical career! But that's jumping ahead. Dave joins me from a distant time zone, just after a dental procedure. But he was kind enough to hang with me for a couple of hours. A lot happened between his birth and Pearl Jam, so Dave sheds a little light on that. Once we get to the Pearl Jam years, Dave tells some incredible stories, like how he got the job, the time he met Spinal Tap, that cursed video, and some stories behind some favorite songs. Dave is also candid about how he was let go from the band and what he's been up to since. He's worked with some incredible artists in Green Romance Orchestra, Guns N Roses, Peter Cornell, Shawn Smith, and the two folks who helped connect me with Dave, Jeff Fielder and Scott Reeder; thank you, both! Will Wesley and Florian Fox Live At Luckenbach.Take a walk with me down Fascination Street, as I traveled 30 minutes from my house to Luckenbach, Texas to see previous guest of the show Will Wesley perform with his buddy Florian Fox. When Will was on the show last time, he mentioned that he & Florian would be playing Luckenbach a few months from then. So, true to his word, Will reached out to me as the date got nearer, and once again invited me to come see the show, and record another episode. This time, he introduced me to his good friend and tour mate, Florian Fox. Florian is a country singer all the way from Zurich, Switzerland! When Florian is in the U.S., he and Will tour together. When Will is in Switzerland, he and Florian tour together. What a great partnership! So my wife and I went to see them play together at The Thomas Michael Riley Music Festival, live at Luckenbach, Texas! My wife and I had never been there before, and this was one hell of a reason to go. In this episode, we get to know Florian, and how he was introduced to, and fell in love with country music. The two of them share the story of how they met, and why they instantly took a liking to each other. They share some tour stories, they explain why their different musical styles work well together, and they talk about some of the similarities in their music. Naturally, they wrote a song together, and they both graciously agree to let me play it! Both of these great country artists play across America, as well as across Switzerland and Europe. If you ever have the chance to see either, or both of them, DO IT! These gentlemen are a ton of fun to talk to and listen to! ******This episode was recorded LIVE at an outdoor music festival during a torrential rainstorm. I cleaned up the audio as good as I could, I hope you enjoy the episode!*****
