Most bands toil for years honing their sound, locking down their lineup, playing gigs around their hometown and then regionally before hitting it big. Though the predecessor to Boston, Mother's Milk, did play gigs in Massachusetts, the visionary on the sound that would become Boston's trademark was Tom Scholz. Tom was not your typical rock star in that he had a master's degree from MIT and was working as an engineer at Polaroid while strategizing on his musical career. He wanted to combine the melodies of the classical music he grew up on with the rock music of the 70s that he loved. He wanted crunching guitars against clear vocals and when he found Brad Delp, he had the voice that make his music soar. Instead of toiling after hours at a studio, Scholz acquired and engineered a 12 track recording unit and figured out how to the get the sound he wanted. When signed by CBS, they wanted to re-record the songs at a fancy studio but industry vet John Boylan basically ran interference with the suits so Scholz could perfect his songs and transfer the demos to the master tapes (and he got their name changed to Boston). The result sold 17 million copies in the US and was the biggest selling debut for a rock album until Appetite for Destruction by Guns N Roses. While some of the songs actually charted, all of them became classic rock radio staples. Anyone who grew up on rock radio heard More Than a Feeling, Smokin', Rock & Roll Band, Peace of Mind and Let Me Take You Home Tonight (the only track written by Brad Delp solo) hundreds of times. Foreplay/Longtime were split as different sides of the single but together offer a bit of progginess to the bands repertoire. Though Tom Scholz is educated, his lyrics are themes that most people can relate to - choosing your passion or going corporate, trying to find woman, fantasizing about your future, and taking risks that may or may not pay off. Those guitar hooks and strong vocals make for some AOR platinum. Say what you want about the band or their sound but this first album struck a chord all over America and still sounds big a bold to this day. Cinderella came out of the gritty streets of Philadelphia by writing hookey riffs, shout along choruses and a fun, glammy stage show. Gene Simmons tried to get them signed but it was Jon Bon Jovi who would convince his label Mercury to get them a record contract. Led by lead singer/songwriter/lead guitarist Tom Keifer, Cinderella had hard riffs and a Sunset Strip performance style that made them perfect for MTV in the mid- to late-80s. Their debut album Night Songs landed in June of 1986 and laid the foundation for more platinum albums and MTV airplay. Keifer's raspy voice can lead big sing-a-long rockers like Shake Me or Somebody Save Me or can sing a lament like Nobody's Fool. His friend Eric Brittingham provides the steady bass and Jeff LaBar lays textures against Keifer's hard riffs and trades a few licks. On the record, drums were provided by veteran studio musician Jody Cortez, though Fred Coury was brought in just in time to make the album cover (don't get Jackson started) and joined the band. Yes, their lyrics are mostly banal and cliched sexual conquests but they were of a time and Cinderella may have done that sleazy 80s rock made famous by Motley Crue and Guns N Roses as well as anyone. Once grunge came, all that was glam or "hair metal" had to go but maybe Cinderella should have been given the opportunity to reinvent themselves like Def Leppard. We think they were unnecessary casualties of grunge and while Night Songs may not be skip-free, it's a solid hard rocking 80s album with some great riffs and fist pumping choruses. Is this one of the best or worst method or repertoire books for learning to play acoustic fingerstyle blues guitar? You can learn to play music using a variety of resources including teachers, online resources, and books. Understanding DADGAD for Fingerstyle Guitar is a method book for… learning to play fingerstyle guitar using the wonderous alternate tuning known as DADGAD tuning. This tuning is often associated with Celtic fingerstyle (Pierre Bensusan and Tony McManus), the British folk revival of the 1960s (Davy Graham), and modern fingerstyle (Andy McKee), but it truly excels in any genre. So, if you have some fingerstyle or classical guitar experience and you have an interest in beginning to utilize DADGAD tuning, this book will provide a comprehensive introduction. Be aware, it is appropriate for intermediate to advanced fingerstyle guitarists. Do not try to work through this book if you are just starting out with acoustic fingerstyle guitar – you really need to have the basics down before starting in this book. Understanding DADGAD covers a lot of ground with regards to this alternate tuning, starting out by showing you simple chords, the basics of fretboard navigation, a few easier arrangements, and some accessible ideas for improvisation. The book provides useful insights into how to leverage your knowledge of standard tuning to facilitate your learning of DADGAD – your 3rd, 4th and 5th strings are tuned the same as in standard tuning, while your 1st, 2nd, and 6th strings are tuned exactly one whole step down. The book also does a great job introducing you to many of DADGAD's unique characteristics – the tuning is especially well-suited to the harp-like cross-string technique, the use of drones, and the use of octaves paired with hammer-ons, pull-offs, and slides. Where the book falls a little flat is that it doesn't effectively show you how to arrange a tune in DADGAD tuning. Upon completion of the book, you may have a few cool DADGAD tunes that you can play, but you may not know how to apply your newly acquired familiarity with the tuning to other music. Personally, I am always arranging tunes for fingerstyle guitar, and while some tunes work great in standard tuning or drop-D, others seem to shine in DADGAD. I recently arranged the Guns ‘N Roses hit, “Sweet Child of Mine,” to beef up my set-list for bars and breweries, and I started out arranging the tune in standard tuning. It wasn't sitting right in the original key, so I transposed it a couple times, but still didn't like the results. Finally, I arranged it in DADGAD and voila, the result was lush, musically satisfying, and playable/performable. Here's a sample of that arrangement. My recommendation is that all fingerstyle players learn to arrange tunes in standard tuning, drop-D, and DADGAD. While Understanding DADGAD doesn't cover this topic, it does give you lots of tools (intervals, cross-string technique, etc.) to use in any future DADGAD arranging. In my eBook, Arranging for Fingerstyle Guitar, I show you how to arrange Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star in multiple keys in standard and alternate tunings (including DADGAD). You can also check out my video/podcast series: Arranging Melodies for Fingerstyle Guitar, in which I show you how to arrange examples from the Essential Elements Guitar Method. A nice supplement to Understanding DADGAD would be another book from our author: A DADGAD Christmas, again, also by Doug Young. This other book contains great DADGAD arrangements of Christmas carols that you can both play and analyze to gain arranging insights. Understanding DADGAD provides both treble clef and tablature for each arrangement. Unfortunately, no fingerings are provided in the music. For each example, I notated my own fingering in the music, after which I was able to play much more smoothly, accurately, and confidently. The skill of choosing sensible fingering is important, and you will need to look elsewhere to further develop this skill. Recordings are available online through Mel Bay's website. Daniel Pearl, A.S.C. is best known for his cinematography work on various horror films including The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974). He has worked on many feature films, over 400 music videos and more than 250 commercials. Some other notable films that he shot include the remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003), Invaders from Mars (1986), Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem (2007), Friday the 13th (2009), The Boy (2016) and Mom and Dad (2017). Some of the most notable music videos he worked on include Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean", Guns 'N Roses' "November Rain" and Meatloaf's "I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That). He won the first MTV cinematography award for "Every Breath You Take" by The Police. He's worked with a record amount of artists in the industry including Billy Idol, Bette Midler, The Go-Go's, Mariah Carey, Ed Sheeran and Usher. Pearl filmed the Michael Bay-directed Meatloaf video, "I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)", which he cites as "one of my personal all-time favorite projects ... I think the cinematography is pure, and it tells a story about the song." Michael Bay would later produce the 2003 Chainsaw remake and their collaborations continued on for years. More films in Pearl's catalogue include Zapped! (1982), Pathfinder (2007) and The Apparition (2012). He worked with Larry Cohen on a number of projects including Full Moon High (1981), It's Alive III: Island of the Alive (1987) and A Return to Salem's Lot (1987).
