He has run 10 marathons, with his latest being his fastest. Luke has experienced various running injuries, including hamstring tendinopathy. Hamstring tendinopathy can significantly impact daily life, not just athletic performance. The distinction between overuse and overload injuries is crucial in rehabilitation. Imaging is not always necessary for diagnosing tendinopathy. Hamstring tendinopathy is often under-researched compared to other tendon injuries. Daily activities, such as sitting, can exacerbate hamstring pain. A multifaceted approach is essential for effective rehabilitation. Strengthening exercises, particularly hamstring curls, are vital in recovery. Early hamstring rehabilitation focuses on building capacity and strength. Runners often lack strength training, impacting their recovery. Incorporating heavy lifting and compound movements is crucial. Plyometrics can enhance performance and aid in rehabilitation. Managing running frequency is essential for tendon recovery. Pain levels may not correlate directly with functional improvements. Capacity testing is vital for assessing recovery progress. Long-term recovery from tendinopathy can take over 12 months. Flare-ups during rehab are common and should be managed. Muscle and tendon adaptations should be targeted separately.  Running technique significantly impacts proximal hamstring load. Trunk position and over-stride are critical factors in assessment. Flexibility in runners may not always correlate with performance. Rehabilitation strategies should focus on individual needs. Shockwave therapy has mixed results for tendinopathy treatment. Field sports present unique challenges in managing injuries. Distal hamstring tendinopathy is less common but still relevant. Metabolic conditions can trigger various tendinopathies. Continuous learning and adaptation are essential in rehabilitation. AI may play a future role in predicting running injuries. As the son of a pastor, Luke Nelson grew up surrounded by people of deep faith. Following his own call to ministry, he attended Bible college and served for 25 years in the Wesleyan Church. There were several issues that began to trouble him, but among them was the question of the Lord's Supper. In his Wesleyan/Methodist tradition, it was considered important, but he couldn't articulate all the aspects of why that should be the case. Digging deeper into the history and tradition of Holy Communion compelled him to take seriously the case that the Catholic Church made for the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist.

111. How cadence can transform your running Typically running isn't a quick win sport, it takes years of clocking miles on the legs to see progress. The only secret is... CONSISTENCY. Except... what if I told you that adjusting your running cadence could transform your running!! It's likely the only research backed running metric that is proven to reduce over use running related injuries (outside of course just running less and slower, but who wants to do that). And it's something you can change immediately! This ep is here to teach you how. In this ep I discuss how checking and adjusting your cadence is really the simplest way to make running more efficient and reduce your injury risk. This of course only really applies to those who's cadence needs adjustment. So tune in to learn how to check your cadence, what is good or bad and what you can do about it. I cover; - what is cadence and how you can measure it - what the research says we should do - cadence related biomechanical changes; stride length + impact forces - tibial bone stress, patellofemoral pain + risk reduction - easiest way to implement a cadence change Some of the resources I mentioned in the show; https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/25156183/ https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15126720/ https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29846979/ https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19915501/ Luke Nelson blog post - https://www.healthhp.com.au/post/the-many-effects-of-increasing-cadence Use our code TAILWINDSTRONG at www.tailwindnutrition.com.au for 15% off Tailwind's premium Hydration and Rebuild products! Luke Nelson is an endurance athlete, father, husband, P.A., ski patroller, and forever seeking deep and powerful experience. Blair and Mark spoke with him the day after the 2023 Grandeur Peak edition of Running Up For Air (RUFA). The conversation started on the topic of changing immediate athletic goals on the fly according to how you feel — and being OK with it rather than being bound to an expectation or particular outcome. He shared some stories of his stint with the U.S. National Ski Mountaineering team, racing in two World Cups in Europe, and a 71 mile-per-hour descent to qualify ... "I have to straight-line this mogul field and I'll either blow up and can say I tried, or I'll make it and be going to Europe". Commenting on the numerous ultras he has run, Luke speaks beautifully of all of the people who helped him do the hardest things, and that, "those people make running not solitary ..." Blair describes them as, "the physical people I get to be with in the mountains as well as those who are no longer here physically, but I still get to share those experiences with ... it's really powerful ..." and both share stories of being visited by ravens in the mountains; protectors, prophets, messengers, intermediaries between the spirit and material worlds who, when seen, may make one wonder "who that was". We speak about endurance efforts as spiritual practice, Luke's journey at Hard Rock and the growth that occurred during the almost-decade of trying to get in via the lottery and finally being accepted on his 10th try ... which would have been far different otherwise. "I was so grateful for the experience that there was never a moment during the day when I considered stopping or even wanting to stop." Ever searching, one of Luke's goals for the year involves a return to rock climbing, which he hasn't done since falling almost two decades ago, an accident that fractured his skull and put him in the ICU for a few weeks. We discuss the emotional journey and recovery needed to confront the fear that has solidified during the years away from that activity. We close the conversation on the topic of sponsorship and Low/No Impact outdoor events, the varying degrees of environmentalism that derive from the culture of particular sports, sorting trash from recyclables, washing dishes during the events to reduce garbage, and always trying to reduce our impact on the natural resource that provides us so much opportunity.

Welcome to the podcast! Episode 99 is an interview with Luke Nelson, chiropractor at Health and high Performance. In this episode we discuss ITB syndrome. ITB syndrome tends to be a common new runner’s injury but is not only limited to beginner runners. Plenty of experienced runners have to deal with this, especially those of us who love getting out in the hills! In this podcast we discuss how to deal with this very annoying condition. When I was a new runner I made the classic mistake of upping my mileage too quickly and succumbed to ITB syndrome and was promptly told by my specialist at the time to take 6 months off running!! No such advice here; Luke gives you realistic advice, but as always we both advocate for seeing a specialist to have the condition diagnosed so you know exactly what you are dealing with! They will work alongside multi award winning director, Martin Turner, who will head the broadcast team as Executive Producer.   The Collins Cup is a new race format modelled after the Ryder Cup, which will see teams of International, European and USA athletes pitted against one another and aims to create and leverage the excitement, rivalry, drama and personalities of the sport of triathlon to attract a wider fan base.   The 2021 Barkley Marathons Had No Finishers This year’s Barkley Marathons looked slightly different than previous editions. There were few international competitors due to pandemic-related travel restrictions, and because of this, a smaller field of runners (usually 40 runners line up), almost entirely Americans, took on the beast. Additionally, runners were required to get COVID-19 tests ahead of arrival, among other safety protocols.   A strong contingent of Barkley veterans lined up at the start, including Big’s Backyard champion Maggie Guterl, two-time Barkley Fall Classic winner Liz Canty, the only three-time Barkley finisher Jared Campbell, and multi-time Barkley attempter Jamil Coury. There was also a lot of excitement around Barkley virgins (first-timers) Courtney Dauwalter, Western States and Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc champion; and Luke Nelson, Tor des Geants finisher. Guterl, Canty, and Dauwalter were attempting to become the first woman to finish the Barkley.   The race started midweek, in order to deter spectators. Founder Gary “Lazarus Lake” Cantrell blew the conch at 2:03 a.m. ET on Thursday, March 18, and runners set off on the first loop an hour later, when Cantrell lit his cigarette. Runners dealt with rainy and foggy conditions throughout the entire event.     ‘It’s impossible to say’: Chris Froome unsure of when he’ll be ready to fight for GC in races again Chris Froome has admitted that he doesn’t know when he will be able to compete for victory again.   The Briton is continuing his comeback from serious injuries at this week’s Volta a Catalunya, but despite headlining Israel Start-up Nation’s team, he was dropped on the opening stage and finished 90th on stage two’s time trial, 2-05 down on former Ineos Grenadiers team-mate Rohan Dennis.   The upbeat and confident Froome has made no secret in declaring his intention to win a record-equalling fifth Tour de France, but asked by Cycling Weekly if that was still a realistic goal he could fulfil this season, he said: “I can’t really put any time on it. I am just taking it one week at a time at the moment.   “It’s just about following the process and I am not putting a timeline on it. Naturally, I would love to be ready for the Tour de France but I have to keep following the process and do what I can.”       What's New in the 303:   How Triathlon was Introduced to the World The History and Background of Triathlons A “triathlon” is defined as a three-part sports discipline comprising swimming, cycling, and running. The three sports are contested as a continuous event without a rest. The triathlon can be an individual or team event over varying distances.   Triathlon history dates back to the early 1970s and originated with the San Diego Track Club. The triathlon was designed to be an alternative to hard track training. The first triathlon event was held on September 25, 1974. Don Shanahan and Jack Johnstone are pioneers in the history of the triathlon. The San Diego Track Club sponsored the event. The triathlon then comprised a 10 km run, 8 km cycle, and 500 m swim. In 1989, the sport was awarded Olympic status and featured for the first time at the 2000 Sydney Olympics in Australia. Since then, the sport has grown in popularity. In fact, no other sport achieved Olympic status in such a short time. Over the next decade, the triathlon grew by leaps and bounds and soon gained recognition worldwide.   PRIMAL & 303 Endurance Indoor Cycling Class, led by Bill Plock Date: Every Wednesday till it warms up Time: 12:00 Noon MST Price: FREE Place: ZOOM (Click Here) ZOOM Passcode: H49LJK Join The Ride     Video of the Week: We NEED to talk about this IRONMAN “Update”       Upcoming Interviews: Michael Murphy is a motivational speaker, paralyzed athlete, and writer. Episode 86 is an interview with the amazing athlete Maggie Guterl. Maggie made headlines when she won Big’s Backyard Ultra in 2019, a ‘last man standing’-style event run by Lazarus Lake (organiser of the infamous Barkley Marathons) which sees runners cover a 6.7km loop on repeat. Each lap must be completed within an hour and starts again on the hour and after that, it’s a battle to see which competitor outlasts the rest. Maggie completed 60 laps to cover a mind-boggling 402.5kms and win it outright – the first woman to do so. Maggie has also competed for Team USA at the IAU 24-Hour World Championships, she’s won the Brazos Bend 100-miler outright, come second at the Georgia Death Race and 8th at Western States, amongst other things. IN this interview we discuss her win at Bigs and what it will take to succeed at Barkley in 2021. I used to think that to get running injuries sorted, one needed to see a physio. How wrong was I! I have been seeing Luke Nelson, chiropractor at Health and High Performance in Mont Albert. Luek is a sports chiropractor who specialises in runners. He has been amazing at helping get on top of the niggles I have had since GSER back in 2019. Let Luke help you get on top of any niggles or injuries you may have now, so that you can enjoy running again and get back to preparing for the upcoming race season or just so that you run pain free! Luke has FKTs on the Idaho 12ers (9 summits over 12,000'), and the Utah 13ers (17 over 13,000'). A few weeks ago he did the Wasatch Ultimate Ridge Linkup, a gnarly but entirely logical Jared Campbell route ringing Little Cottonwood Canyon, starting directly above Salt Lake City. "The WURL is a fascinating route; it took several years for me to feel ready to even try it. I wanted to be able to move not only quickly through this terrain, but safely at the same time." Luke is very conscious of the “Kilian Effect”: "I’ve been very careful how I’ve talked about this - I don’t consider it a running route - it’s a mountain route. If you’re an experienced trail runner, you might not have the skillset that’s appropriate to do this route."

The Pigs hit the airwaves to sponsor and cover a fantastic live music and craft beer festival at Fountain Square Brewery, the second of five Discovery Music events sponsored by Spark Joy Music and Musical Family Tree. Non stop, high energy talent hit the stages at noon and didn’t stop till after midnight. We started off the day with a quick visit from Grover, followed by Aaron from Musical Family Tree. We were all a bit ashamed to not know more about this non-profit organization doing so much for the music scene in and around Indy. Aaron educates us on the Family Tree as well as a little about her own band and where they can be found. Fountain Square’s, Luke Nelson joins the boys once again to tell us about the beer on hand at the event, as well as one made especially for Jackie Martinez, and what’s brewing in the upcoming future. We end Part One with a very special visit from Mr. Jared Hiner, the man behind Kammy’s Kause. We know all our fans in Indy know all about this incredible yearly event, but for those outside Indy not familiar yet, Jared goes into great detail about his organization, the upcoming event to benefit families dealing with 4p-, also known as Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome (WHS), an extremely rare chromosome disorder, and his beautiful daughter, Kammy, who is the inspiration for it all. The Pigs were invited to cover the 14th Annual Kammy’s Kause, the two day music festival coming up on August 18th - 20th at the Fortville American Legion Park. This year’s event includes: Kammy’s Kidzone, Kammy’s Ride, a petting zoo, pony rides, face painting, balloon artists, bounce houses, live art, food trucks, 27 midwest bands, silent auKtion, merchandise, great people, free camping (tents only) and parking.
