Today's conversation centers around a personal story about a big life event that requires you to navigate a host of emotions within every member of the family. That life event is adoption, and our hope is that as Kristen Minor shares her story, you will find comfort and wisdom for your own journey. You'll hear how she and her husband, Matt, came to the decision to adopt through prayer on a trip to Costa Rica, what fears they experienced along the way, and how they found a sense of peace through the realization that God is in control. Kristen tells the story of how they came to meet their child, Gipsy, through donating the proceeds from their worship band's music to a children's home in Costa Rica. She gets candid about meeting Gipsy, feeling overwhelmed with fear, and the two signs she saw on the road that confirmed her decision. We touch on the value of community, and Kristen shares what it was like as a mom to witness her child's grief and heartbreak and the open doors of communication between her and Gipsy, as well as how Kristen's own experience grieving her brother helped her to walk alongside her daughter. You'll hear how travel has bonded Kristen, Matt, and Gipsy, and how metalsmithing has become a great mental health space for Kristen. Next, Kristen shares how she was able to still find hope in her brother's death, the message of hope she wants to give listeners, and how this can only be found in God. We hope you join us to hear Kristen's story of hope today. We've all had a bad day, or a bad week. Heck, maybe even a bad month. Maybe you've contemplated jumping to another company, or quitting all together because it's just not working. You may not know it, but there is real danger in how we talk to ourselves during those times of low belief and frustration. In this week's episode, Kristen is fired up about the untruths we tell ourselves when things aren't working out. She talks about how our brains are wired to seek out problems, and how you can change the roadmap and earn true success. Without feeling guilty or ashamed. So make sure you've got your big girl pants on this week, as Kristen gives us all a dose of tough love. Here are a few key points from this episode: Why Kristen wants to invite you to take the word ‘should' out of your vocabulary How a negative mindset can show in your content (and scare off potentials) An explanation of what Kristen calls the ‘How Hunt' and why problem solving from a negative space is less effective The importance of breaking the cycle of reaffirming negative thoughts How Kristen uses her evaluation process to help students find what is working When things get hard, it's easy to throw your hands up and scream that nothing is working. But when you calm down, evaluate the truths, and stop pointing fingers, you open the doors to meeting your true potential. Today's show is a live coaching call regarding a topic that has been very relevant to me recently. We are talking about the many nuances of online courses. I hope this episode will be helpful to you and bring new ideas if an online course is on your radar. Our Featured Guest-Kristen Boice, LMFT Kristen Boice is a therapist in private practice and a fellow podcaster. She has realized the need among her listeners for an online course. Her podcast, Close the Chapter, is about closing the chapter on certain things in our lives so we can open ourselves up to new opportunities. In today's coaching call, I'll share some lessons I've learned along the way about online courses. We'll talk about the rationale behind creating a live course vs. a pre-recorded one. We will wrap up with a pre-launch strategy to help get buyers for your course before you launch. http://www.pathwaystohealingcounseling.com/ (Pathways To Healing Counseling) http://www.kristendboice.com/ (Kristen Boice) You'll Learn ● Why Kristen started her podcast about two years ago to provide another opportunity for deeper work for her clients ● How an online course can help you get more information out to curious people ● The options for your course and other services ● Why niching down is a big challenge for therapists ● How Kristen sees the epidemic of people feeling “not good enough” and being scared to speak up ● How a niche can help you offer value and find your sweet spot ● How the best courses take people from one place to another ● Why Kristen focuses on helping with the hard conversations ● How to use phraseology that appeals to people and addresses their need ● Step-by-step actions to build your email list and create effective opt-ins ● How to create value on the front end of your course by validating your content Today's Sponsor: Online Course SchoolI know that many of us want to launch a successful online course whether it's to share our message with a larger audience or to diversify our income beyond 1:1 work. Speaking from personal experience, I also know that there are a ton of barriers to getting started: the tech, the mental hurdles, being unsure of whether our course will make money, or even how to market and grow our online course. Online Course School is a live 8-week cohort-based experience where you'll gather with other therapist course creators to create your online course. It includes teaching workshops from Mel and the STC team, weekly assignments, and opportunities to work together to get things done. By the end of our time together, you'll have your lessons and modules outlined, know what tech, software, and platform you need to record your online course, a working sales page, and have a concrete growth plan for your online course. We'll be launching our first cohort in Sept 2021 with six members. If this sounds like something you'd love to be a part of, please check out my free http://sellingthecouch.com/onlinecourseguide (A to Z Online Course Guide). The guide will help you learn from my mistakes over the past 6+ years of being an online course creator and lessons I've learned from moving the Healthcasters podcasting course from a $297 first sale to over 275 students and passing the $200k revenue mark in 2021. This week Kristen interviews long time friend, client, and self-declared Enneagram 9, Kelsey Hansen, on her success and how she did things differently to build her business. Kelsey is a six figure earner with her company and is known as the “Sourdough Mentor” on Instagram. Yes, she provides value and creates content around sourdough bread AND has a successful business that is completely unrelated to that, on the same Instagram account. And she does it without hustling. Kelsey wants people to know that you don’t have to be a super type-A, outgoing, extravert to build your business online. She’s showing up as her exact (introverted) self, developing relationships, and building trust. Relational equity and trust is a key foundation to a sustainable social selling business and Kelsey is the perfect example of that philosophy. Here’s what you’ll learn during their conversation: How Kristen and Kelsey started their own mastermind after meeting on Instagram Kelsey’s philosophy on investing in her business and how it impacted her growth Why Kelsey said she had to ‘get over herself’ and the image she had about network marketing How she built a 6-figure social selling business with 2300 Instagram followers in 10 months as an introvert What Kelsey did at the start of the pandemic that resulted in a growth explosion Why Kelsey is on a mission to show other women that they can have success with ease that is sustainable Why so many people think fear and discomfort is a ‘red light’ and how it should be used as a compass, instead Follow Kelsey Hansen on Instagram for sourdough tips and watch how she runs her successful company with ease and sustainability. What you'll learn about in this episode: Kristen's journey as a serial entrepreneur What drove Kristen to start her own business, and how she did it How Kristen stayed grounded while balancing a family, a business, and a master's degree Why Kristen decided to sell her original two businesses to focus solely on Tierra Encantada What Kristen is doing to promote diversity through her organization How Kristen managed to franchise her business and the impact it has had on her as a leader How Kristen maintains her resilience as a leader Resources: Website: https://franchise.tierraencantada.com/ https://www.tierraencantada.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kristendenzer/ https://www.linkedin.com/company/tierraencantada/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/kristenmdenzer/ The Freedom of Entrepreneurship Kristen Denzer is the Chief Executive Officer and Founder of Tierra Encantada, the Leader in Spanish Immersion Early Education®. She is also actively involved in the community, serving on the Board of Directors of Women Venture and the School Board of her children's school. In this episode of the Intentional Greatness podcast, Kristen joins us to talk about her journey as a serial entrepreneur. She also explains how she has maintained her resilience as a leader while running a business that has been heavily impacted by the pandemic. Reap What You Sow Kristen started out on a normal career path, but after her supervisor took credit for the outcome she worked so hard to achieve, Kristen became determined to run her own operation. She wanted to reap what she sowed, where her hard work was met with reward instead of petty office politics. Kristen began her journey into entrepreneurship at a young age. By 2013, she was running an event rental company, a doggy daycare, and her latest venture, Tierra Encantada, all at the same time. This was the ticket to time and financial freedom. From her adventurous travel to her family time, Kristen is still enjoying the freedom of entrepreneurship to this day. It doesn't matter how old you are, or what your background is, the same opportunity is available to you if you're willing to double down and jump in feet-first. Earned Not Given The freedom of entrepreneurship is unparalleled, but it earned, not given. By no means is it an easy path, however, when it is something that sparks joy and passion, success is just a byproduct of your hard work. As an entrepreneur, your business is your baby. Every extra hour that you spend prospecting, refining your process, etc., is going to directly impact your time and financial freedom. You get what you put in, and while it's not always reciprocated, it is so much better than putting the fate of your career in someone else's hands. At one point, Kristen was balancing two businesses, a family, and a master's degree at the same time. If she was able to make it work, you can too.
Kristen Westcott is a business growth strategist and founder of Kristen Westcott Media (www.kristenwestcottmedia.com ) who has spent the last decade in the legal and education fields supporting leaders and students in the areas of goal setting, productivity and project management. After recognizing her true passion, that lies in serving entrepreneurs, she honed her skills as a Director of Operations. She quickly noticed that what was holding many business owners back wasn't a lack of drive or ability, but a lack of foundational systems that could support the day-to-day operations of scaling their business. These days, she spends her time helping online coaches, copywriters and course creators scale without the frustration that massive growth can bring you. Here's what we covered on the episode: How Kristen and I met at Sage and Tarzan's Legendary Life Event in 2019 and how she reached out about coming onto the podcast Kristen shares that she majored in sociology, which had nothing to do with business, management, or systems but was drawn to the legal side of the sociological studies she did After school, Kristen became a law clerk and worked in a law office for 7 years doing commercial litigation, which included a ton of project management, so she honed in on the project management side of things Kristen explains a lot of times in commercial litigation you work for the lenders of the banks — the big companies who are calling in loans on small businesses and shares she worked there during the 2008 recession and really struggled with the process she had to do everyday How Kristen decided to leave that job and got into the education field which she loved because she was helping students with goal setting, time management, and helping them learn a new set of skills While Kristen was teaching she got into coaching, which is where she stumbled onto the online world and got certified as a health coach and a life coach, which she did for a couple of years but realized she spent more time helping other coaches market their business than on marketing her own Kristen explains she didn't need to market her business because she was getting referrals and explains that as a business integrator, you work so deep with clients in the back end of their business that you aren't in and out in a month, you work with them long-term so you can't, and don't need to take on as many clients Because Kristen's business was full as an integrator, she was looking for a way to help people that weren't ready for an integrator but who were past the startup phase and in a growth phase, where they want to level up and need support but can't afford the support How kristen is having to market her business more now in order to help people who might be interested in a membership or consulting model Kristen shares that a virtual assistant can help support you through administrative tasks, tech tasks, invoicing, graphics, or social media, etc. and how she likes to train her VAs to be outcome driven versus task driven and what that looks like What an online business manager is and how some are certified and how some people just call themselves an OBM because what their doing is a more than the tasks a VA does Kristen explains that an OBM might manage the projects and give tasks to a VA or members of the team, they might write or execute project plans and help manage the team as they go through that project plan and also explains that some might do implementation on the back end of things Kristen walks us through a corporate business structure versus an online business structure and explains that there are different things we need and don't need in an online structure depending on where you are in your business One mistake Kristen sees entrepreneurs make when trying to fill roles is hiring too abundantly before they're ready because what happens is they hire someone but don't have any systems in place to give them consistent work so then they think they need to hire an integrator to manage all these people when really they just need to clearly define roles Another mistake Kristen sees entrepreneurs make is being leery of hiring because they don't want to let go of any control over tasks in their business and will wait too long to hire which means they are overworked and stressed because they haven't brought someone in to support them in any shape When you want to set up the basic systems for your business, Kristen suggests tracking your time, regardless if you plan out your week because sometimes it doesn't go according to your plan — this way you can see where your time is actually spent After you track your time, Kristen says you will be able to see the smaller tasks taking up your time that you could offload to somebody else; then you can categorize the tasks into administrative, social media, back end processes, etc. and see what the best hire for your business would be Kristen shares that the next step after time tracking is to document what you're doing as you're doing it and shares that Loom is a great Chrome extension, where you can screen record what you're doing, narrate it, then save those recordings so when you bring someone into your business they can use those videos as references When finishing a creative project, Kristen shares that an important step people miss is having an offboarding process because a lot of creatives pour their heart and soul into a deliverable and by the time they're done, they email it to the client and that's it, rather than having a nice offboarding process to wrap things up Kristen explains the offboarding process, what it might look like and how you can include a folder that has links to all the copy, or content you created in one convenient place for the client, and how this can also be a great spot to ask for testimonials or referrals One thing Kristen loves to do in her offboarding process is create videos on how to go in and make a change to something she's done, which is great for web designers because you don't want people coming back to you if they're only changing one small thing on their website for example Kirsten offers project management in an agency model, where clients work with a member of her team and helps them manage long-term or short-term projects Kirsten's two VIP Day offerings where she sits down with a client for 6 hours and they power through a couple things — one offer is a strategic planning VIP Day, where they map out their plan for business growth and the other offer is a hiring process VIP Day, where they look at what kind of support they actually need In August, Kristen is launching a membership for people to work through those two VIP Days over a longer time frame, which is great for people who might not have a lot of time in their week, but want to start getting those back end, foundational systems in place If you have a question about business and systems, don't hesitate to message Kristen on Instagram because she loves talking about this stuff and wants to help you Connect with Kristen on Instagram, Facebook, or on her website and look for the freedom track link, that helps you get started on setting up those processes so you can offload them to someone else Links mentioned: Kristen Westcott Media Loom Chrome Extension Connect with Kristen on Instagram Connect with Kristen on Facebook Freedom Track Like what you heard? By and large, evangelical culture defines Christianity by what we don’t do. This gets passed on to our kids until they begin to define themselves not by what they love, but by what they abstain from. In reality, it’s a beautiful thing when we raise our kids by teaching them what we do; what we love and fight for. Kristen Howerton is a blogger, podcaster, and author who is on a mission to do just that. In her new book, Rage Against the Minivan, she tells her personal parenting story and helps parents understand that there is no “right” way to raise kids. Kristen is also a licensed marriage and family therapist and a mother to 4 children by birth and adoption. In this episode, we talk about the unique difficulty of parenting teens, why women often bear the mental load in their families, and how moms can authentically pass on their faith. Show Highlights: Kristen’s faith evolution experience and how she expressed that publicly. The lack of resources nowadays for parenting teenagers. How to love our teenage children as they journey towards adulthood. Responding to our children by empathizing with the feelings instead of the conviction. The mental load women take on and how to excavate and stop reinforcing that message. How Kristen’s spiritual baggage plays into her parenting. Do you want to know one of the top hiring mistakes small business owners make? It's not hiring the talent their business really needs. Typically, this is caused by jumping into hiring before organizing internal processes or evaluating where you really need help. Kristen Diaz is on a mission to stop this behavior. While she supports businesses as a Virtual Assitant, one of her passions is to help small business owners determine what type of help they need before starting the hiring process. If they end up needing her services, great! If not, she knows that she still provided them tremendous value. In this episode of the Growing Your Team podcast, Kristen is sharing her advice on how to know if it's time to explore hiring your first Virtual Assistant, how to build remote relationships, and more. About Kristen Diaz: Kristen Diaz was born and partially raised in Albany, New York before moving down to Tampa, Florida. Studious with extracurriculars to boot, Kristen harnessed her talents at Loyola University New Orleans receiving a B.A. in Mass Communications and Marketing. Parting with the Big Easy after graduation, she moved back to Tampa with dreams of climbing the corporate ladder, running a marketing department, and moving to a new location. That clearly did not happen. Being a Type A perfectionist, she grew stressed in a 9-5 grind where anxiety attacks would take form often due to the need to over-perform, balance outside work life, and trying to meet her goals. After realizing that she needed to take control of her anxiety she was able to see her true passion- working for herself and helping others get balanced. Vow + Vast was born to help solopreneurs grow with better balance. With virtual outsourcing, assistance, and productivity coaching, Kristen believes that with her help, you'll be able to do you- but better. Kristen's specialties lie in organization, operations, and marketing. A solutions-oriented Virgo, she always favors getting tasks done right with quality and more importantly, on time. Her passions include Marie Kondo-ing messes, creating a better work-life balance for business owners, and working to become fluent in other languages. You can usually find her sending memes to friends in perfectly timed increments of distraction in between periods of extreme productivity. In this episode, you’ll hear: How Kristen was encouraged by a past boss to leave her job and start her own business. Why, as business owners, we need to support our team member’s growth even if that means they end up leaving our team. How when building remote teams, it’s essential to gauge if a remote relationship will work between you and each team member before you make the hire. Why setting and keeping routines are one of the best things to do when building strong remote relationships. Why as business owners we need to focus more on the work being done rather than when it gets done. What you need to do and know before you hire a virtual assistant to make sure you don’t waste your money. Kristen’s tips for knowing when you’re ready to hire a VA for your business. A Long Island transplant from Arizona, Jarnagin’s vast knowledge of the tourism industry spans from state tourism marketing, branding a luxury resort and serving as a lobbyist for tourism advocacy. Kristen and her team at Discover Long Island work to promote a positive perception of Long Island across the globe, which draws lucrative visitors, stirs business attraction and drives economic development throughout the region. She’s twice been named one of the Top 50 Women in Business on Long Island and is a graduate from the acclaimed Walter Cronkite School of Journalism at Arizona State University. Her favorite pastime is discovering Long Island with her two daughters and reigniting the passion for this place we call home for Long Island natives. She discusses their latest work and shares advice for using creativity and collaboration to solve difficult marketing challenges. What You Will Learn in This Episode: Kristen’s journey into destination marketing Advice for marketing a destination as an outsider Why it is important to stay true to your own voice in destination marketing How Kristen and her team at Discover Long Island are telling Long Island’s true story The latest campaign by Discover Long Island and the inspiration behind it Different ways Kristen has used creativity and collaboration to solve difficult marketing challenges Discover Long Island Kristen Jarnagin is the President and CEO of Discover Long Island, where she and her team work to promote a positive perception of Long Island across the globe. She may not be a New York native, but as an outsider, Kristen has taken a fresh perspective and a visitor’s lens to the marketing efforts of Discover Long Island. With experience in state tourism, hospitality, and the political sector, Kristen has seen almost every corner of the travel and tourism industry. She is a risk-taker and a talented marketer who is uncovering Long Island’s true story so the whole world can see it. On the latest episode of Destination on the Left, Kristen joins us to discuss her journey and talk about the art of collaboration and creativity in the travel and tourism industry. What is Your Story? It is easy to look at what other destinations are doing and think, “it worked for them; it will work for us too.” But Kristen believes the only way to achieve great success in destination marketing is to stay true to your voice. Long Island is different from every destination out there, so Discover Long Island put all of their energy into capturing that. To Kristen and her team, standing out means being themselves. And since Kristen is not a native, she sees the destination how a visitor would see it. You don’t have to redefine who you are, you just have to understand who you are. By listening to the community and articulating your destination’s true story, you can make an impact without reinventing the wheel. Not Just a Destination Kristen and her team are finally telling Discover Long Island’s true story in their latest campaign, and it is all based around the idea that Long Island is not just a place to visit; it is a community. The campaign captures the distinct flavor of Long Island, the accent, the proximity to New York City, and a bunch of other factors that make it a one-of-a-kind destination. Whether you are a foodie, a historian, a beach bum, or anything else, Long Island is not a place you go to ‘do,’ it is a place you go to ‘be.’ Chances are your destination also has an amazing story to tell, so go out and discover it; then tell it wholeheartedly with authenticity. Are you in a position to perform at your very best? The desire to optimize performance is not exclusive to elite athletes. In fact, we’d all like to reach our potential—on the field and off. Measuring resting heartrate, HRV and sleep performance helps us understand what’s going on with our bodies and how prepared we are to perform. So, what is the best way to leverage data to achieve peak performance and improve our overall health? Kristen Holmes is the Vice President of Performance Optimization at WHOOP, a data and analytics company empowering users to perform at a higher level through a deeper understanding of their bodies. The WHOOP wearable gives feedback around strain, recovery and sleep, allowing users to course correct as necessary and put themselves in the best possible position to perform. In her role as VP, Kristen works with tactical, professional and NCAA athletes and teams to optimize their use of the WHOOP system and understand how to best action the data. She is also a former member of US National Field Hockey Team and one of most successful coaches in Ivy League history, winning 12 league titles in 13 seasons as Head Coach of the Princeton University Field Hockey Team. Today, Kristen joins us to explain what differentiates WHOOP from its competitors like the Oura Ring and Apple Watch, describing how athletes use the WHOOP recovery score to drive healthy training adaptations. She walks us through the research around the impact of access to data, discussing how it can improve the duration and quality of sleep as well as physical performance. Kristen also offers insight into who might benefit most from WHOOP, from elite athletes to third-shift workers to individuals in high-risk jobs. Can you imagine what the women in this world could do if they weren't worried about the number on the scale? - Jennipher Walters on what insight her intuitive dietitian had given her. This week, Rob had an amazing discussion with Podcast Hosts, Personal Coaches at Fit Bottomed Girls, and Creators of the Love Your Body. Love Your Life online course, Jennipher Walters and Kristen Seymour. Both women shared their own wellness journeys, how they went from student to personal trainer, and how Fit Bottomed Girls has evolved since 2008. Do the 7 Day Paleo Reset Special BONUS for Open Sky Fitness Podcast Listeners: Get $100 off of the Love Your Body. Love Your Life online course when you enter the code, New FBG. Both Jenn and Kristen are on a mission to share their You Can't Hate Yourself Healthy approach to both men and women to inspire them to give up their diets and focus on enjoying their lives rather than allowing the number on the scale to determine their happiness. Through Fit Bottomed Girls, Jenn and Kristen are leading voices in combating the negative messages that the media spreads about what it means to be healthy. It is their mission to help people boost their body confidence and self-image through courses, couching, books, podcast interviews, and more. On This Episode: As you listen, Rob, Jenn, and Kristen discuss: How you can create healthy habits by first focusing on what you love such as your favorite exercise and foods before you challenge yourself. Why our poor body image and self-confidence is actually a wake-up call that there is something deeper that needs our attention. Why you can't have the mindset that you must restrict your nutrition while working out hard or training for endurance events. Why some people with tendencies such as Rebels or Upholders might have difficulty with focusing on their self-love and how they can overcome it with a unique approach that works for them. How important it is to do a self-audit of where you are now and where you want to be in the future. "It's okay to eat the foods you want or need to eat. We tend to moralize food but you're not good for eating a salad nor bad for eating ice cream." - Kristen Seymour About Fit Bottomed Girls It began as a single blog with a tongue-in-cheek play on a Queen song. Today, the Fit Bottomed World, run by Jennipher Walters and Kristen Seymour (who are certified fitness professionals but also just everyday regular women), is an online phenomenon reaching millions of women (and men!) each month. And, of course, the focus is always on the idea that fit bottoms come in all shapes and sizes — and that you’re more than the number on the scale. (And they know because they’ve been there. Read Jenn’s personal story here, and Kristen’s here.) True pioneers of the body-positive movement, Jennipher Walters and Erin Whitehead began Fit Bottomed Girls in 2008 as friends looking for a fun, fresh and no-diet approach to being healthy. Months after the site launched, it took off — readers were clearly hungry for something other than “how to lose 10 pounds in 10 minutes and get the perfect man.” Infusing their own experiences (both failures and successes) they created a community of “FBGs” — welcoming everyone in, including writer Kristen Seymour, who would later become a business partner. From there, the Fit Bottomed Girls expanded into new verticals and products to serve its growing readership, including Fit Bottomed Mamas, Fit Bottomed Eats, a book, Fit Bottomed Zen, a podcast and the online course Love Your Body. Love Your Life. In 2017, Erin left the company to pursue other interests and focus on her family, while the Fit Bottomed World expanded into more speaking engagements, retreats, and brand consulting. Jenn and Kristen also continue to work with major brands such as Brooks Running, Marshall’s and Pure Protein on campaigns and other influencer projects that are fully aligned with the Fit Bottomed Girls’ mission. In fact, Jenn and Kristen were named as one of The 100 Most Influential People in Health and Fitness by Greatist in 2016 and 2017, and were listed as one of the best healthy living bloggers of 2018 by Healthline. And the one thing that will never, ever change is the company’s mission to continue to let women (and men!) know that you simply can’t hate yourself healthy. Let Us Coach You On The Podcast! Come on the podcast and let us be your coach for an hour on the show! Kristen’s passion for her work stems from suffering a number of injuries herself. She ran competitively in high school and college with plans of continuing to improve her running times after college. Teens. Toddlers. Moms. No matter the age. We all struggle to remember (or know) the truth about who God says we are. And our position in Christ. When we forget, we let friends, circumstances, or lies feed our souls with identity. And that takes us down the path of uncertainty, harmful activities and a broken path. Thankfully, today’s guest, Kristen Hatton, helps “Get Your Story Straight”. When her daughter was in 6th grade, Kristen started teaching her and a group of friends truth from the Bible. Unfortunately, there weren’t a lot of great resources available for preteens/teens. So she used notes from her husband’s sermons and wrote her own Bible study. (click here to check it out)** In this episode, Kristen and I talk about the struggle for our kids to know how “justification” applies to daily life. (And define what ‘justification’ means). We also chat about how to help teens navigate the challenges of social media. And Kristen vulnerably shares her daughter’s battle with an eating disorder (which began with internalizing social media posts). Lastly, Kristen helps us start to keep communication open with our kids. So when they are teens they will keep talking. I’m in the stage with lots of little people all trying to be with me and talk to me (at the same time). But after three blinks I’ll have a home full of teen boys. The time I spend listening now will impact how much they talk to me in the future. Very thankful for the help, perspective and wisdom from Kristen. Now I can see the teenage years as an age of opportunity not a season to be feared. What we chat about: How quickly our kiddos grow into teenagers. How Kristen saw a need for good bible study materials for teens. Helping our kids be anchored in who God says we are (not who their friends on social media says they are). Importance of teaching our kids the concept of justification. When the world is measuring perfection and performance but we know we are only perfect in Christ. How to communicate worth and identity to our kids. Why teens stop talking to their parents. Listening and asking probing questions. Responding with grace instead of condemnation. How internalizing social media posts led to her daughter’s eating disorder. How boys struggle with social media. How Kristen talks to her kids about the impact of social media. Talking to your sons & daughters about pornography. Keeping an open conversation. 064: Getting Hired by a Yoga Studio with Kristen Sweeney Have you completed your yoga teacher training and are preparing yourself to look for employment? Shannon and Kristen Sweeney have your back with clear steps to getting hired by a yoga studio that, most importantly, is the right fit for you. It's the best gift you can give yourself, the studio, and your students. Kristen Sweeney remembers the first yoga class that lit her up. She was a working as a dancer in Las Vegas, Nevada and tried a Bikram Hot Yoga class. She was “sweaty, drenched, exhausted, hooked, and exhilarated.” Later, as an actor living in New York city, she found yoga to be grounding, gave her a refuge and a sense of safety at a time when her life was hectic, outward facing, and approval seeking. Kristen reached a point in her life when she wanted to find work that felt rewarding on a daily basis. That led her to teach yoga and share her insights on her blog. Finding a strong connection between herself and yoga teachers through her posts, she wondered if there was something more to explore. Kristen niched down further to create her business Edge of the Mat and is now a business coach for yoga teachers. On today's episode, you will be guided through the steps to find the teaching job that is right for you. The steps will take you through a process to determine where you'd like to teach, how to approach the studio, what to expect when you audition and much more. Kristen has also kindly shared the PDF The Yogi's Guide to Teaching at a New Studio for when you've landed the job. You've got this and we wish you all the best in finding the work that lights you up! 07:30 How Kristen's yoga journey began 10:55 What led Kristen to write her blog Edge of the Mat and how she expanded it into a business 14:20 Was there a gradual realization or a light bulb moment that led her to clearly define her niche 16:50 Step-by-step process to approach studios 17:10 Step 1: Discern which studios you want to approach If you research to find the studios that fit with you, you are more likely to get the job Important to be able to approach a variety of studios, gyms and community centers- are they close and easy to commute to? Does the community vibe match your style of teaching What is your ideal class size? What do you want in the experience of teaching? What studios fit you? Where would I like to work- be choosy and shift that mindset from desperation to personal choice Take a variety of classes at the locations to find a good fit 22:35 Step 2: Approach the teacher of the class you've been taking and approach them with a 2 to 3 sentence ‘pitch' or introduction including: Thanking them for class and what you liked about it What you love about the studio and community Asking who would you connect with to set up an audition Leave resumé and consider including your resumé on your website 26:05 Step 3: Planning and Preparing for the audition 30:25 What to do if you don't hear back from the studio Follow up- email Show up in person and take one of their classes Don't take it personally if you don't hear back, studios get many emails Sometimes it takes quite a while for to hear back- even months! Worth checking in a few months later (in person) to see if a spot has opened up Don't take it too personally and letting it breathe for a while 33:50 Tips and tricks for teachers auditioning Prepare :) Detailed sequence planning Create class arc even if it's a short audition In a Round Robin, situation be prepared to change up your plan depending on your place in the class Structure gives you freedom Prepare yourself for your professional best- externally and internally so you show up as your best, most confident self 38:30 Step 4: Feedback 1:1 time with the studio manager Be open to feedback Feel free to engage and ask questions about the feedback so you can evolve as a yoga teacher Step 5: Follow Up Auditioner will hopefully let you know what the next steps are (repeat the instructions to make sure it's clear and follow up) 41:05 Step 6: Yes, no or Maybe What is the next step if you get a “thanks but no thanks” Possible reasons: Missing self-awareness that misidentified the place as the right fit for you (move on) Studio felt as though you're not a good fit or that you're not quite ready skill-wise to join (check in again in the future) 43:30 Coming from a place of personal choice instead of a place of desperation 44:05 How you can work with Kristen 45:20 Shannon's wrap-up and action steps Links Email: kristen@edgeofthemat.com Kristen's Website: Edge of the Mat Edge of the Mat Facebook Group Kristen on Instagram PDF gift from Kristen: Yogi's Guide to Teaching at a New Studio The Connected Teacher Facebook Group Follow The Connected Teacher on Youtube Book a Consultation Call with Shannon Gratitude to our Sponsor Schedulicity

As an introvert, I loathe shallow conversations. I prefer silence over "chatting" any day. However, I love deep conversations. When I teach yoga, as much as I try to learn the names of the students who attend my classes regularly, sometimes its challenging to learn much more than that. A few weeks ago a student of mine asked me if I taught yoga for a living. I told him that it is hard to make a living teaching yoga, and that I teach yoga and doing eating disorder recovery coaching. Combined - that is my living. He seemed really interested in that, and became more interested when I mentioned that I was starting a podcast. As it turns out, Derek is a mental health counselor, undergraduate instructor, and a researched in Supported Education at Rutgers University.
