It's Black Hat and DEFCON week and it wouldn't be a show without the disclosure of a few big bugs. The winner so far seems to be a new exploit found in Intel's SGX memory encryption technology. Per pre-briefing ahead of a talk happening today, security researchers found a flaw in the Advanced Programmable Interrupt Controller (APIC) that allows them to read uninitialized memory that could contain stale data before it's cleared by the CPU. Unlike Spectre and Meltdown, this isn't a side channel attack. It's a flaw in the CPU architecture. This means that attackers can recover data very quickly. Tests showed a 128-bit AES encryption key could be recovered in less than 2 seconds with 94% accuracy and a 1024-bit RSA key could be nabbed in about a minute and a half with 74% accuracy. Intel is saying the exploit is on their 10th, 11th, and 12th gen processors which includes Ice Lake but no mention of Sapphire Rapids. This and more on this week's episode of the Rundown. In addition to [@bcantrill](https://twitter.com/bcantrill) and [@ahl](https://twitter.com/ahl), speakers included special guest Tom Lyon plus Joshua Clulow, Dan McDonald, Dan Cross, Tom Killalea, Theo Schlossnagle, Antranig Vartanian, and [@perlhack](https://twitter.com/perlhack).We recorded the space; the recording is here. Some of the topics we hit on, in the order that we hit them: [@2:06](https://youtu.be/79NNXn5Kr90?t=126) SPARC 30th anniversary dinner > SPARC was an amazing achievement for its time, > but there were some nasty trade-offs made. [@2:56](https://youtu.be/79NNXn5Kr90?t=176) illumos announcement on the end of SPARC supportSPARCstation 2 [@4:37](https://youtu.be/79NNXn5Kr90?t=277) “There is no photography allowed in the bring-up lab” story SPARCstation 1 (code-named Campus) > They bricked their first CPU.. I feel so decadent, I've just been sprinkling multiplications around my code for years. [@9:55](https://youtu.be/79NNXn5Kr90?t=595) popc instruction (also called Hamming Weight) IBM Stretch 1961, and the one-of-a-kind IBM Harvest made for the NSA Henry Warren's 2002 Hacker's Delight Ch. 5 shows a ~20 instruction algorithm (no branches, only adds/shifts/masks by constants) > Warren: According to computer folklore, the population count function is important to the > National Security Agency. No one (outside of NSA) seems to know just what they use it for, > but it may be in cryptography work or in searching huge amounts of material. According to Agner Fog, Ice Lake performs popcnt with a 3 cycle latency, and Zen 3 with just 1 cycle latency. Phil Bagwell's 2001 Ideal Hash Trees depend on pop count > Bagwell: Note that the performance of the algorithm is seriously impacted > by the poor execution speed of the POPCT emulation in Java, a problem > the Java designers may wish to address. Persistent versions of Bagwell's trees are used for the built-in hash maps of Clojure, and in libraries for Scala etc. [@11:39](https://youtu.be/79NNXn5Kr90?t=699) This was the debate between Roger Faulkner and Jeff Bonwick: register windows Roger Faulkner (RIP) thought they were horrific [@12:35](https://youtu.be/79NNXn5Kr90?t=755) Register fishing: Bryan's version and Adam's version > When you want to know the state of some other process, you have to flush > those register windows to memory to be able to recover the stack trace. [@14:30](https://youtu.be/79NNXn5Kr90?t=870) Delay slot > We sat around the lunch table talking about how crazy it would > be to have a branch that executed right after a branch. DCTI couple (delayed control transfer instruction) [@15:31](https://youtu.be/79NNXn5Kr90?t=931) “Well, the instruction set doesn't allow that..” story > Bedlam. As far as Solaris kernel discussions go, bedlam. [@25:26](https://youtu.be/79NNXn5Kr90?t=1526) Software-filled TLB > They just didn't have the room to cram a hardware page table walk into the chip. MIPS would give you a trap on a VAC conflict (virtual address cache) [@27:34](https://youtu.be/79NNXn5Kr90?t=1654) It was slow, it was late, and it had a lot of problems, it was wrong. Before we get into today’s discussion, give us a little bit on your background and some of the areas you focus on.  Topic 2 - We’ve done quite a few shows with Intel over the years. This is where we were first introduced to how much work Intel does directly for the largest public cloud providers. Can you give us a sense of how much Intel has evolved to help the cloud providers deliver the scale and performance they do today? Topic 3 - A few months ago we spoke about Confidential Computing. We all know that security is a challenge best solved with defense-in-depth. Can we talk a little bit about the intersection of embedded security in silicon, and being able to keep up with new performance challenges with the new Ice Lake architecture? Topic 4 - How do we raise awareness that these native capabilities are available across all the cloud providers - AWS, Azure, Google, Oracle, etc., when software features tend to dominate the headlines? Topic 5 - What do you see as some of the next-generation security challenges that the cloud is well-positioned to (maybe) better handle that we could in data centers?Topic 6 - Sometimes people see Intel as being one-step removed from the technology companies they directly engage with. What are some of the ways that people can more directly engage in all the programs (developer tools, reference architectures, etc.) that Intel creates?FEEDBACK?Email: show at thecloudcast dot netTwitter: @thecloudcastnet

Let's go back to the time of the Mongols, Lord Novgorod The Great, and the Teutonic Knights. To the frozen landscape and icy lakes fo a medieval spring. To a time when the Pope in Rome wanted nothing more than to force the known world to follow the Latin Creed. To a time when Russia was nothing more than a dream, far in the distant future. In this episode of Cauldron, let's go back to the Battle On The Ice April 5th, 1242. This has been one of the more exciting battles I have covered in Cauldron to date. The high drama of Teutonic Knights crashing into the brave Russian peasantry suddenly crashing, man and horse alike, into the icy waters of Lake Peipus, is so cinematic it belongs on the bog screen (likely the only place it has ever existed.) The real battle was so unimportant at the time that one contemporary chronicler noted of the year 1242, "Nothing happened." The real fight was a brutal, deadly little melee on the side of the lake that ended abruptly when the Crusaders broke under heavy flanking horse-archery. There was a chase on the ice, and some horses and men may have broken through the ice, but Esientsien's vision is not likely to have been the result.Producer's Note: This episode was recorded without a script in an attempt to speed up the production process. Working just from notes and ideas was a new and stressful experience, but scriptwriting takes days, this episode took days from record compiling to release. Not sure how I like it yet, any constructive feedback is appreciated - cburke111@gmail.com or DM in on Instagram/Twitter/Facebook.

While husband and wife Timofey Yuriev and Melissa Kho were walking their dog, Kira, in New York state, they came across two dogs that had fallen through the ice into a freezing lake. Timofey immediately stripped off and jumped in. Why did he think he could save the dogs? Well Timofey had spent his childhood caring for animals injured in nuclear blasts, and being dunked in frozen lakes by his grandfather. So perhaps Timofey was the perfect person to carry out the rescue. Jo Fidgen takes up the story. (Photo credit: Melissa Kho.)

However, researchers have expressed doubt about the discovery, with some calling it a "hoax." Fact-checking and research site Snopes.com also questioned the credibility of the discovery. Though examples of elongated skulls have been found in Peru, dating back thousands of years, experts attribute this to an ancient practice of artificial cranial deformation, according to Snopes.com. In an interview with The Express, British UFO author Nigel Watson, described the body as "a plaster cast model," dubbing it "110 perfect fake."
