In the heart of every shadow that plagues our communities, from the silent cries of the trafficked to the silent battles of addiction, We Fight Monsters stands as a beacon of hope and defiance. Born from the shared experiences of those who've faced the abyss and emerged to tell the tale, our organization is a testament to the power of resilience and the strength of unity. We are the ones who navigate the night to bring back the lost, who stand in the face of evil not with weapons, but with the unwavering belief in redemption and recovery. Ben is a daddy to eight (sometimes ten), grandparent to one, humanitarian, fighter of evil, bringer of hope, formerly addicted, alcoholic and homeless. He's also the owner of BlackRifle Co, a data intelligence and digital media agency not to be confused with the coffee company of similar name, and co-founder of two non-profits—We Fight Monsters and Flanders Field—that help people in some of the worst places in America and the world. Ben loves sharing that his wife Jess can drive, load, and fire a M18 Hellcat, a WWII tank destroyer. He’s also the only crackhead ever invited to CIA headquarters. When they’re not in South Memphis helping others rebuild their lives after addiction, Ben and Jess can be found in rural Georgia where they live with their family.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We also explore the poignant legacy of John McCrae's poem "In Flanders Fields," which gave us the poppy as a symbol of remembrance. Join us as we reflect on the sacrifices made by soldiers and the enduring pain of those they left behind.

Fr. Eric Nicolai preached today November 11: at the 11th hour, the 11th day, the 11th month in 1918, the bugle sounded to announce the ceasing of all hostilities. Today we remember the fallen. Now Poppy is emblem of Remembrance Day due to the poem "In Flanders Fields" written by Canadian physician Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae.  In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row,  That mark our place; and in the sky  The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below.  We are the Dead. Short days ago  We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie  In Flanders fields.  Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high.  If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow  In Flanders fields.

Arming Ourselves With Poetry, Film & Discussion on Memorial Day: 1917  Memorial Day is here. Sarah and Jennie urge Screen Cares listeners to respect the extraordinary bravery and sacrifice of all armed forces and their families by choosing to seek civil discourse rather than looking for an enemy among us. By thoughtfully screening 1917, we are reminded that there is a real human cost in war and that as articulated in Amanda Gorman's optimistic poem, “The Hill We Climb,” America is “not broken but simply unfinished.”  1917 (2019) - IMDb For those who are Deaf or hard of hearing, please visit this link for the transcript of this episode of Screen Cares: Episode Transcript Special Thanks to all who have served and lost in armed conflicts. We see you, your families, and your sacrifices.  Episode Host: Sarah Woolverton-Mohler Co-Host: Jennie Ziverk Carr                 Screen Shares Rating:  1917 is an excellent Family Screen to share in any experiences and memories that an intergenerational viewing may stir up, as well as a (cautionary) Little Screen to help provide older adolescents with the context that violence in real life is very different than that often portrayed in action movies, and that Memorial Day celebrations come at a cost.  Screen Sparks: Use our Screen Sparks to discuss 1917 and the incredible significance of Memorial Day as you consider the use of war movies, depiction of violence and truth with those you care about: There are many types of violence– slapstick/comedy, domestic, sci-fi/superhero, horror/torture, war and more. Do you feel that all violence should be treated the same? Do war movies make you feel more or less optimistic about the human condition? In an emotional moment in 1917, Blake is mortally wounded and asks Schofield if he was dying. The daily Last Post Ceremony seeks to express the lasting gratitude which we all owe to the men who fought and fell for the restoration of peace, and the independence of Belgium. Every evening just before 8pm, the local Police halt the traffic passing through the Menin Gate to the east of the town centre. For a brief moment the modern world is brought to a stop, as the solemn Last Post Ceremony allows us to reflect on the men who passed through this gate on their way to the deadly battlefields of the Ypres Salient. The cost of war is all too evident as we stand under the Menin Gate where 54,000 names to the missing are recorded. Men who have not had the honour of a proper military burial. No grave for family to visit and tend. We pause and remember their sacrifice. In the words of Field Marshal Plumber, pronounced during the unveiling of the monument in July 1927 “ HE is not missing, he is here”. These men still lie in Flanders Fields. We owe it to them to remember their ultimate sacrifice they made for our freedom. Lest we forget.   Presenter: Adam Blum Guest: Benoit Mottrie Editor: Kyle Watkins Investigative Consultant: Adam Holloway

This week - our last episode of the season brings all the horrors of World War I with the additional terror of an unexplained pandemic! In this episode Nicola and Hannah discuss the gendered expectations of soldiers returning from WWI with disabilities, especially facial injuries, and the expectations of women in their lives. There's a brief Robin Williams-diversion, and then a discussion of the work of American artist Anna Coleman-Ladd in restoring confidence to some soldiers with her delicately crafted copper masks that served to mimic the men's pre-war faces. Thanks to everyone who listened through this season of our podcast, we appreciate every single one of you. We will be back sometime in 2022, hopefully recording together and not being hit by things falling off the desks we're recording under. Anything for slightly better audio quality.  Thanks to Dorian (here's his twitter) for his reading of “We Are the Maimed” and “In Flanders Fields.” Dorian is a queer-, disability- and trans- rights activist and artist based in Melbourne. In honor of Memorial Day and the men and women who have sacrificed their lives in the armed forces, this special episode of Strategies & Consequences War is an anthology of excerpts from poems and prose about war. In On War, Clausewitz writes about war as a science that can be analyzed impersonally. This perspective is contrasted with Mccrae's In Flanders Fields and Komunyakaa's Tu Do Street. This episode is the oral version of my essay on Memorial Day 2021. It discusses the origins of Memorial Day as “Decoration Day,” a remembrance of Civil War dead that has its roots in the Appalachian decoration day ritual of decorating ancestors' graves. The episode concludes with a recitation of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem “Decoration Day.” The episode begins with a discussion of last year's essay on Memorial Day, centered around the poem "In Flanders Fields." That essay can be read here: https://westof98.substack.com/p/decoration-day-2020-poppies The referenced story in The Bitter Southerner, "Grave Concerns" by Jennifer Crossley Howard, about the decoration day traditions that persist today in the Deep South: https://bittersoutherner.com/grave-concerns-southern-decoration-day-tradition The text of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's "Decoration Day" poem: https://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2011/05/a-memorial-day-poem-by-longfellow-from-the-atlantic-june-1882/239636/ As a special bonus, "Decoration Day" from the Drive-By Truckers, with Jason Isbell singing lead. It's not about the holiday, but it tells the story of a violent feud between Southern families and the veneration of ancestors and death plays an integral role in the story: https://open.spotify.com/track/3jemxe3JnL0QXCDh1DdEgV?si=557308f4a3f74290
