The word “addiction” is derived from the Latin term for, “enslaved by” or “bound to.” Addictions control our lives and block clear connection to Soul. Today, we talk to an incredible addictions expert and Elisa's former colleague, Linda Johnson, MFT, about the spiritual path of facing addiction and the most effective tools for recovery. Overcoming addiction forces us to investigate our primitive biology and highjacked brain chemistry. Addiction is an extreme journey, that many do not survive, but it is also an opportunity to master our impulse towards death wish or life wish. Recovery takes fierce love and spiritual strength. Dive in with us as we explore how to transform compulsion into gained wisdom.

David and Linda Johnson are faithful members of The Vine Church. They are unique at The Vine because we don't have many members who are in their sixties or seventies. The Tournament Director's Association (TDA) was formed in 2001 by Matt Savage, Linda Johnson, Jan Fisher, and Dave Lamb with the goal of standardizing poker tournament rules. Before the TDA, each venue would have their own 'house rules,' creating problems and confusion for new or traveling players, while suppressing the growth of the game. In the two decades since, almost every licensed cardroom in the world has jumped on board, adopting TDA policies and procedures for their own events. Today, the TDA has more than 4,000 members in 65 different countries. Every two years, poker room managers, tournament directors, and event organizers from all over the globe gather in Las Vegas for the TDA summit. It is there that rule and procedure changes are proposed, voted on, and ultimately made. World Poker Tour Executive Tour Director Matt Savage is not only a co-founder of the TDA, but also sits on its Board of Directors. Card Player recently caught up with him for a special episode of the Poker Stories podcast to talk about the most recent summit and the latest rule changes to look out for. Highlights from this episode include subjects such as the big blind ante, player abuse, the order of mixed games, stalling, tournament guarantees, and the use of real-time assistance, better known as RTA.

Linda Johnson Rice is a former magazine owner who was born of John and Eunice Johnson. Linda's father in 1942, founded Johnson Publishing Company, which published Ebony and Jet magazines. And as a result, was the largest black-owned magazine publisher in the United States. In 1982, Johnson became the first African-American to appear on the Forbes 400. Linda wanted to be an integral part of her father's and mother's business. She began training in the fashion department at age seven, and took notes during business meetings and reviewing her parents' incoming and outgoing mail. Linda attended the University of Southern California and graduated with a BA in journalism from the Annenberg School for Communication. She received an MBA from Northwestern's Kellogg School of Management in 1987. Immediately after graduation, Linda became President and COO of Johnson Publishing until her promotion to CEO in 2002, becoming the first African-American female among the 100 largest black-owned companies in the United States. In this second part of our conversation, Linda relives those dark days where she had to prepare the business for bankruptcy, and how a nurturing family and a loyal circle of friends helped her get through tough times. We also talked about: How Ebony Fashion Fair and Fashion Fair Cosmetics evolved out of Ebony the magazine. Selling the magazine business in hopes of saving the cosmetics business. Hiring people with more relevant skills, but arguably too late to save the businesses. How Linda is creating her own legacy while preserving her parents' legacy Quotes: “Consciousness is self-awareness without being self-absorbed” “You find out who your real friends are when things are dark and stormy. It's the people that hand you an umbrella to keep you dry who are the real friends that you can really rely on.”

This episode is the second in a series we're doing with Creativity Explored. CE's mission is "to provide developmentally disabled people access to the human right of creative expression." Check back Thursday for the next episode in this series, where we meet Studio Director Paul Moshammer. Joseph "JD" Green lives close enough to Creativity Explored on 16th Street that he walks to get there. JD has been with Creativity Explored since just after he graduated from high school 10 years ago. He was doing art in the building where he lives, in Hayes Valley, when someone let him know about the organization serving people with developmental disabilities. He's been making art nearly his whole life, inspired by TV shows, animation, and cartoons. Nickelodeon and Disney characters made up the bulk of figures he drew, but his favorite to this day is Spider-Man. JD also does social and political art. He tells us all about a collaboration he did with other Creativity Explored artists looking at Black identity through the lens of "blackface" and flipping the script on white supremacy. In 2019, he was part of a show with other Black CE artists called "Blackiful" that looked at police violence against people of color. JD recounts his first visit to CE for us. He was in awe of the large space filled with so many people "just doing art." He immediately loved it and started meeting other artists. Today, he still draws cartoons, but his main jam is portraits. He's drawn Michael Jackson, Prince, and David Bowie, among other singers and celebrities. He also does ceramics in addition to painting and drawing. We end this episode with what JD loves about San Francisco and who his favorite artists are, including fellow Creativity Explored artist and JD's friend, Gerald Wiggins. If you missed it, Part 1 with CE's Executive Director, Linda Johnson, can be found here. We recorded this podcast at Creativity Explored in the Mission in December 2021. Photography by Jeff Hunt

This episode is the first in a series we're doing with Creativity Explored. CE's mission is "to provide developmentally disabled people access to the human right of creative expression." Check back next week for the next episode in this series. In her own words, Linda Johnson "always had a passion for city life." In this podcast, the executive director of Creativity Explored shares her life story with us. She grew up in Ohio, graduated college with degrees in English and creative writing, got her master's in Iowa in social work and poetry, and moved to San Francisco in the early Nineties on a hunch. After working at a number of different places, Linda combined her loves of social work and the visual arts with a job at Creativity Explored. Before that, she had worked at Streetside Stories, a program that helps young people tell their life stories. From there, she worked for the city of Walnut Creek, what Linda describes as "an incredibly arts-focussed city." She managed arts programs there. She shares the story of first falling in love with Creativity Explored, many years before working there. It was back in the day when you had to be somewhere, in person, to see and buy art. She remembers the big sales that CE would host and what enriching experiences they were. While at the City of Walnut Creek, Linda told herself, 'My dream job would be executive director of [Creativity Explored].' When its then-ED was retiring, the person doing the outreach to find a replacement just happened to live in Walnut Creek and found Linda through her work there. It was like a dream come true. Linda tells us in her own words what Creativity Explored is and what the non-profits vision and outlook are. A big part of CE's future is moving more deeply into a "community with" type of organization and away from an "in service to" operation. She goes on to talk about how proud she is of CE's artists. Some have been collected or gone on to show in museums and galleries around the world. Please visit Creativity Explored's website here, where you can sign up for their newsletter and never miss any of the things they're doing. You can also donate to the non-profit there. Check back next week for another episode in our series with Creativity Explored. We recorded this podcast at Creativity Explored in the Mission in December 2021. Photography by Jeff Hunt

Today's guest on CPG is a member of the Poker Hall-of-Fame, former owner of CardPlayer Magazine, early investor in PartyPoker, and was a major driving force behind the World Poker Tour coming to reality… the amazing Linda Johnson. It isn't hyperbole to say that Linda has been one of the most influential figures in the world of poker for at least the past 30 years as both a pioneer and visionary. As a pioneer, she planted the seeds for poker's exponential growth by forcing poker rooms to adopt stronger rules regarding atrocious behavior. As a visionary, she instantly recognized the potential for bringing poker mainstream when Adam Pliska pitched her and Mike Sexton on the idea of the holecard cam. Before you dive into today's conversation with Linda Johnson… for those of you who have been listening to Chasing Poker Greatness from the beginning, you might remember one of my early questions:“When you think of greatness in the world of poker, who's the first person that comes to mind?”I stopped asking it because it quickly became obvious that 90% of my guests were gonna answer Doyle Brunson or Phil Ivey. But as I was sitting here thinking of what to say in this intro, it dawned on me that if I were asked that question in the present moment, my immediate most honest answer would be Linda Johnson. Many moons ago she fell in love with a beautiful card game that existed in a world that wasn't very kind to her. Instead of accepting this reality or finding a new game to love, Linda invested every ounce of her lifeforce rising up to meet the challenges and paved the way for the poker world as we now know it.For that, I personally owe her a debt I can never repay. My only hope is that the next generation of poker players has half of her resolve and willpower so that we can continue fighting the good fight Linda began many years ago...Showing the outside world why the game of poker is worthy of both love and aspiration.Without any further ado, I bring to you my conversation with poker hall-of-famer, Linda Johnson. To learn more about the Free Nuffle promotion, visit: https://chasingpokergreatness.com/free-nuffle-promotionNew CPG Cash Game Courses!Preflop Bootcamp: https://bit.ly/Preflop-BootcampFish in a Barrel: http://bit.ly/fish-in-a-barrelNeutralize Flop Leads: https://bit.ly/2OkN8Yt
Buying property is expensive especially in Australia's biggest cities and regional areas now surging too (thanks Covid), with purchasers paying stamp duty, conveyancing, and legal fees, not to mention the huge deposit required. So, would you really want to pay more for something you could do yourself? Well, recently I did. For the first time ever, my husband and I engaged a buyer's agent to find us a Coastal family home that had some non-negotiables, a set time frame, and a strict budget – so the agency we used Spring Buyer's Agency is run by Michelle Tucker and Linda Johnson, and they were worth every cent – having found us the right property in 8 days. As background, Linda brings a diverse and varied skill set to Spring Buyers Agency, having operated in multiple roles in her 23 years' experience within the Real Estate industry. Beginning in residential sales, she was mentored by an industry leader and spent 10 years as a successful selling agent in one of Australia's most iconic and desirable locations - Bondi Beach. She held senior leadership positions, functioning as Director of Operations with Raine & Horne Bondi Beach, Head of Residential Sales with LJ Hooker Lower North Shore, and was General Manager with the Australian operation of LINK Franchising, the largest business brokerage firm in the world. Linda also achieved her Master of Business Administration (MBA) in 2016. Michelle's 15 years' experience within the property industry is built on an intimate understanding of market conditions and a drive to achieve outstanding results. Beginning her career with LJ Hooker Terrigal, she worked as a specialist property developer on the Central Coast. Most recently, as Head of Projects for McGrath Central Coast, Michelle managed all medium to large scale off-plan development projects. Buyer's agents work for buyers to find a suitable property according to the buyer's brief and often negotiate the purchase on behalf of the buyer. Depending on the service needed, they may charge a set fee, starting from as little as $100 to attend an auction for you. For a full search, inspection, and negotiation service, they may charge a percentage of the property's sale price, which can be up to 3 percent, plus GST. When houses in my home city of Sydney now selling well over $1.5 million, that adds up to a lot of money when you pay another service. So, is it worth it? Like all my guests, I wanted to remind you that they are not being paid nor vice versa. We cover in this podcast: What is a buyer's agent and how did you become one? How did the sector grow and who uses a buyer's agent? Is it just for wealthy people? What has been the hardest thing about being a buyer's agent – are you ever been unsuccessful for a client for whatever reason? How do you ensure they get a great property and not pay too much or feel obligated to say yes faster than normal market conditions? Take away: What is your final takeaway message on The Politics of Buyer's Agents? To connect more with Linda and Michelle: Website: https://www.springbuyersagency.com.au/

The novel, "The Casserole Ladies," is screwball comedy about five older unmarried women on a quest for postmortem romance. The authors, Bill and Linda Johnson, created the book's concept after a recently widowed neighbor began getting lots of traffic and casseroles after his wife died. They both felt that it is important to get more education and knowledge so they joined AZREIA, one of the best decisions they have made because It has given them the knowledge and networking necessary to involve themselves with all types of Real Estate Investing. When they started Flipping, they had difficulty getting into Properties quickly with their Real Estate Agent, so they went to Real Estate School in 2011 and had her License in 6 weeks. Linda currently helps Investors, Buyers, and Sellers find Properties for Flips, Rentals, and Owner Occupied and Assisted Living Homes. They have Flipped nearly 45 Properties over the years while working a regular job. They have invested in Wholesaling, Flipping, Rentals, Multifamily, and Assisted Living Homes. Linda currently attends the Phoenix Real Estate Club and Assisted Living Homes Subgroup to further education and networking. She loves helping Investors get started and working in the Real Estate Market. Stefanie Womble started investing in real estate in May 2019. The desire to start began with listening to the audiobook Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki. Education by listening to various podcasts like BiggerPockets along with joining networking groups like AZREIA took off from there. She owned half of a duplex in Flagstaff, AZ, and started renting it out as an STR in June. Another home was purchased in June. Her husband fixed up the home and by mid-Dec it was listed as an STR. Throughout her education, Stefanie grew interested in assisted living homes. She started meeting many others interested in the same and asked AZREIA if she could start a subgroup to continue with education and networking. Most of 2020 were spent working with Coconino County to get approval to open her first assisted living home. By Nov 2020, we had our third STR. In 2020, a substantial income was earned as a side hustle while working a W2 job, which has continued into 2021. Artemis Live - Insurance-linked securities (ILS), catastrophe bonds (cat bonds), reinsurance
This was the opening panel session of Prospectus 2021, a new annual reinsurance and insurance-linked securities (ILS) conference brought to you by Artemis in collaboration with sister title Reinsurance News, in association with Kroll Bond Rating Agency (KBRA), panellists discussed the Covid-19 outlook for the re/insurance and ILS industry. To start, Peter Giacone, Managing Director, Global Head of Insurance, KBRA, noted the very unique situation that the markets are in many months after the arrival of the global crisis. “I think back to how we were looking at it and trying to grapple with the issues back in March and April. I think now, with the benefit of six months of hindsight, I think the industry has actually fared quite well. From a credit risk perspective, I think there was an awful lot of hand wringing that was going on at the time, there was a lot of concern around how assets and liabilities would behave,” said Giacone. At KBRA, he continued, the firm tried to keep a very steady hand with regards to taking rating actions, which Giacone said has proven to be the correct course of action. “I think the asset side of the balance sheet has sort of stabilised a little, obviously with quite a bit of volatility and uncertainty continuing. So, some of the short-term concern on that front, I think, has somewhat subsided, but we will obviously have new challenges, in terms of low interest rates,” he said. Adding, “On the liability side, I think also, again, lots of uncertainty. But, some of the very large numbers that had been bantered around initially, which I think made sense at the time, certainly I think we're at a point now where perhaps some of those are not where we're going to land. And, so, I think that's good news for the industry overall.” The panel discussion also features David Flandro of HX, Linda Johnson of TigerRisk Partners and Joanna Syroka of Fermat Capital Management.

Barry Shulman found poker while studying at UC Berkeley and the University of Washington. He received his degree in accounting, but opted to forgo the family liquor business in order to build an empire of his own in real estate. His expertise in the field meant that he was often quoted by publications such as the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Business Week, and Forbes, among others. After retiring, Shulman moved to Las Vegas and continued to play poker. While he enjoyed the game as a player, he could also sense that poker was about to go mainstream. Shulman decided that he didn't like being retired after all, and purchased Card Player Magazine from Linda Johnson, transforming it into the industry leader it is today. In 2001, Shulman won his first World Series of Poker bracelet, taking down $222,295 in the $1,500 stud eight-or-better event. His second bracelet came in 2009, when he defeated Daniel Negreanu heads-up for the World Series of Poker Europe main event title and a prize of $1,321,534. The next year, he finished third at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure main event, banking another $1,350,000. Just last summer, Shulman narrowly missed out on adding a third bracelet, taking second place in the Super Seniors event and third in the $1,500 Double Stack. He now has more than $5.6 million in career live tournament earnings. Highlights from this interview include abandoning ship, the free speech movement at Berkeley, $20 five-card draw games at the Oaks Club, a knack for numbers, one-hand Luke, "retiring" in Las Vegas, calling him at the Mirage, "muscling" his way into Card Player, forecasting the poker boom, winning his first bracelet in a game he didn't play, a seven-figure score in London, playing like a "piece of furniture," sweating family at final tables, Costco regrets, poker in Cambodia, why he can't beat David Williams, and what cow balls taste like.

Welcome Back to another episode of the Cross Border Interview Podcast. If you don’t know by now, my name is Christopher Brown and I’ll be your host. Since the launch of the podcast I’ve been asked the same thing, why do you do this podcast? And I give everyone the same answer. This podcast is about talking to people in an intimate setting and just having a discussion. Today we find ourselves often becoming keyboard warriors and have forgotten the lost art of the conversation. So with that in mid 2019 I started this podcast to achieve one goal, get people to have conversations again. With no notes, no prepared questions I sit down with subjects to learn about them, from them. Today’s guest is no exception to that. Today I sit down with Former MLA for Calgary-Glenmore Linda Johnson Linda’s path to elected politics is fascinating, from working as a volunteer in the 1979 federal election to running herself in 2012 for the Progressive Conservative Association of Alberta. Linda’s Path brought her to the heart of federal and provincial politics in Calgary. We talk about here time in Ottawa, Her work for the PCAA, and her time in the Alberta Legislature. We also talk about that nail bitter of an election in 2015. So here now is Cross Border Interviews Ft. Linda Johnson.

This week features a wonderful conversation with my friend and clergy colleague, the Rev. Kimberly Gibson-Pierce, about the spiritual uniqueness of Appalachia and the revolutionary undercurrent behind such stereotyped phenomena as snake-handling and poison-drinking in certain pockets of Pentecostalism. Rev. Kim is a commissioned minister in the Disciples of Christ denomination and a scholar of Appalachian history. This discussion broke apart quite a few of my misunderstandings about the region and invites all of us into an experience of Appalachia that is deeply rooted in communal engagement with nature, family, and the spirit of the place. Matt Savage got his start in the poker industry as a chip runner at Garden City Casino, and worked his way up the ranks to dealer at Bay 101, and eventually, tournament director. The San Jose-native saw a need in poker for a standardized set of rules, and with the help of Linda Johnson, Jan Fisher, and Dave Lamb, formed the Tournament Directors Association. Savage was named tournament director for the World Series of Poker when he was just 34 years old, and served in that position during the onset of the poker boom from 2002 to 2004. In the years since, Savage has continued to work tournaments at his home casino of Bay 101 and also at Commerce Casino in Los Angeles, which is currently hosting the L.A. Poker Classic. He's also seen his role with the World Poker Tour increase since he was named Executive Tour Director. Savage was heavily featured in the 2007 poker movie Lucky You, and also has a WSOP final-table score of his own, finishing fifth in the 2009 $1,500 stud eight-or-better event. He was the inaugural member of the Poker Room Manager's Hall of Fame, and has been nominated for the Poker Hall of Fame the last few years. Highlights from this interview include trying to get unplugged, why you don't need a 16 lb. ball anymore, a disdain for homework, working since 14, going from chip runner to floorman, auditioning at Bay 101, being forced out of the box, the baby faced TD at the WSOP, being proactive with Men Nguyen and John Bonetti, Hellmuth steals the spotlight, how he almost screwed up the infamous Moneymaker/Farha bluff, running out of chips in the main event, proposing to his wife at the final table, how $400,000 went 'missing' from the prize pool, why he's the real star of Lucky You, a testy scene with Robert Duval, John Juanda's grudge, Dick Corpuz: king of the soul read, and why poker needs a museum.
