The bill, sponsored by Republican Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, targets slave labor in Xinjiang and surrounding provinces, where China is conducting a genocide of the Uyghur people. It passedthe House by voice vote Tuesday and is expected to be signed into law by President Joe Biden. The Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act creates a “rebuttable presumption” that goods produced in Xinjiang or by certain listed Chinese business entities are produced by the forced labor of Uyghurs or other ethnic minorities. Companies may continue to import products from Xinjiang if they provide “clear and convincing evidence” to the Commissioner of Customs and Border Protection that their supply chains do not include forced labor. The bill's passage unlocks three votes to confirm Biden nominees to key State Department positions. Rubio and Democratic Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy agreed that the Republican would drop his objections to Nicholas Burns, nominated to be Ambassador to China, Ramin Toloui, nominated to be Assistant Secretary of State, and Rashad Hussain, nominated to be Ambassador for International Religious Freedom, in exchange for Murphy's lack of objection to the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act. Glenn Loury Says America is Not White Supremacist  Play audio: 0:00-1:02 Why are people flocking here from all over the world? Because it's so oppressive and white supremacist?  Supreme Court Sends Texas Heartbeat Law Back to Appeals Court A U.S. Supreme Court decision Thursday dealt another blow to the Texas abortion industry by sending its lawsuit against the state heartbeat law back to a federal appeals court that previously allowed the legislation to go into effect. The Associated Press reports the pro-abortion groups suing to overturn the pro-life law wanted the justices to send their lawsuit back to U.S. District Judge Robert Pitman, who blocked the law in October. On Thursday, however, Justice Neil Gorsuch signed an order sending the case to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals instead, according to the report. Back in October, the Fifth Circuit rejected Pitman's ruling just a few days after he issued it and allowed the law to go into effect again. Pro-life leaders estimate that the heartbeat law, which bans abortions once an unborn baby's heartbeat is detectable, about six weeks of pregnancy, has saved thousands of babies' lives since it went into effect Sept. 1. The law includes a unique private enforcement mechanism that allows private individuals to sue abortionists and those who “aid and abet” in abortions in violation of the law. It is this provision that has been the main focus of the legal dispute thus far. Earlier this month, the Supreme Court threw out a lawsuit from President Joe Biden and rejected the Texas pro-abortion groups' request to temporarily block the law while their legal challenge continues through the courts. While the high court ruled that the Texas abortion businesses may continue with their lawsuit, it also watered down their case by allowing them to sue state licensing officials but not the state judges and clerks who are charged with handling lawsuits spurred by the law. Now, the Supreme Court is sending the case back to the Fifth Circuit for consideration, and abortion activists are losing hope — good news for the future of unborn babies in Texas. “The Supreme Court left only a small sliver of our case intact, and it's clear that this part of the case will not block vigilante lawsuits from being filed,” Marc Hearron, a lawyer with the Center for Reproductive Rights, told the AP. “It's also clear that Texas is determined to stop the plaintiffs from getting any relief in even the sliver of the case that is left.” Erwin Chemerinsky, dean of the University of California Berkeley School of Law, said he also was “stunned” that the Supreme Court allowed the law to remain in effect even though it violates Roe v. Wade. “The court's refusal to block the blatantly unconstitutional Texas law is also a strong signal that it is poised to overturn Roe v. Wade,” Chemerinsky wrote this week at the Los Angeles Times. Texas abortion businesses are admitting a likely defeat as well. They essentially have no way to stop Texas citizens and pro-life groups from filing lawsuits against them, abortionists and abortion center staff who help abort unborn babies in violation the law. And if the law remains in effect much longer, many Texas abortion businesses may close. According to the Texas Tribune: Amy Hagstrom Miller, president of Whole Woman's Health, which operates four clinics in Texas and is the lead plaintiff in the providers' lawsuit, warned last week that the current volume of services is not enough to keep clinics open in the long term. “Staying open is not sustainable if this ban stays in effect much longer,” Hagstrom Miller said. “We are grateful for the donors and foundations and folks who have been supporting us in the interim … but the future looks bleak if we can't get some justice here.” Ultimately, the abortion businesses' legal challenge appears to be “doomed,” the report concluded. And that's great news for unborn babies. A new study found that, in just the first month of the law, abortions in Texas went down 50 percent. Since then, Texas abortion facility directors have reported even bigger drops in their abortion numbers, as high as 80 percent compared to the previous year, according to the Texas Tribune. The heartbeat law has the potential to save tens of thousands of unborn babies from abortion every year. In 2020, about 54,000 unborn babies were aborted in Texas, and about 85 percent happened after six weeks of pregnancy, according to state health statistics. Remaining missionaries kidnapped in Haiti by gang released https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/remaining-missionaries-kidnapped-haiti-gang-released-rcna9010?fbclid=IwAR0acBi61sVy19OtPu-G_kaiJdEj84zWLnILglQvByTNWRW3jF6WHLgd1kw A Haitian gang has released the remaining 12 hostages they had abducted — more than two months after their kidnapping, the Ohio-based religious group they work with announced Thursday.  "We glorify God for answered prayer—the remaining twelve hostages are FREE! Join us in praising God that all seventeen of our loved ones are now safe," said a statement from Christian Aid Ministries. "Thank you for your fervent prayers throughout the past two months. We hope to provide more information as we are able." Haiti National Police Spokesman Gary Desrosiers also confirmed to NBC News that the hostages had been found safe, but would not say where they had been taken. Seventeen people working with the group were kidnapped in October by the 400 Mawozo gang, which controls the Ganthier commune in the suburb of Port-au-Prince where the missionaries were taken. Christian Aid Ministries had previously said that those who were kidnapped were sixteen U.S citizens and one Canadian citizen — six men, six women, and five children. The missionaries were returning from an orphanage, an hour and a half from Christian Aid Ministries Haiti base and often visited by their staff, when they were taken. The group, based in Millersburg, Ohio, repeatedly called for supporters to fast and pray for the safe release of the hostages, at one point earlier this month encouraging Christians to fast for three days. In November, two of the missionaries were released, and another three were freed earlier this month Fight Laugh Feast Magazine DNB Our Fight Laugh Feast Magazine is a quarterly issue that packs a punch like a 21 year Balvenie, no ice. Haiti, synonymous with generational poverty, misrule, and human misery, is reeling from a series of calamities as grave as any the island nation of 11 million people has suffered through. In July gunmen assassinated president Jovenel Moise, whom the opposition had accused of attempting to illegally prolong his term. The political crisis remains unresolved. In August a powerful earthquake killed more than 2,000 people and injured 12,000, recalling the devastating 2010 quake and the ensuing failure of donor relief to rebuild the country. And as the year draws to the close, Port-au-Prince is considered the kidnapping capital of the world as armed gangs operate with impunity. The weak central government is unable to control the gangs in a security vacuum caused by the departure of a U.N. lead peace-keeping force in 2019. In this episode of History As It Happens, historian Alan McPherson, an expert in U.S. foreign relations with Latin America and the Caribbean, discusses the roots of Haiti's struggles, which date to its founding as the first free Black republic in 1804.

On Saturday, a gang kidnapped 17 North American missionaries in Haiti as the party returned from an orphanage in a suburb of Port-au-Prince. Since then, the group, known as 400 Mawozo, has demanded a ransom of $17 million for the victims, who include five men, seven women, and five children. While many locals have been kidnapped in recent years as security on the country's roads has been increasingly threatened, this incident has drawn significant international attention. This kidnapping comes roughly two months after US troops withdrew from Afghanistan. America's departure and the chaos that ensued led many expats, including aid workers and missionaries, to leave the country. Haiti: Kidnapping and Crime Gangs like 400 Mawozo pose risk beyond Island Nation

We can expect that the kidnap for ransom gang that is holding the American and Canadian Missionary group hostage is now seen on a different level. They have taken hostages from an aid agency before and gotten paid, this group the 400 Mawozo or 400 Marozo unclear which spelling is used one term means idiots the other simpletons or neardowells are far from their origins as a gang of drug and booze-crazed youths who committed crimes for the need for money. They are the real thing - a criminal gang terrorizing the Caribean country on the verge of collapse. If the gang and its leaders can hook up with haters of American groups and missionaries this could turn them into a far wider and wilder group beyond 400 - and Haiti into a base for crimanl piracy and terror that could make them be as bad as the horn of Africa or some areas for Sulu Sea. If or when the ransom is paid and the hostages are released, the gangs leadership is smart enough to know there will be at some point a reckoning - it may be in their best interest to see no harm comes to anyone in thier custody as they will one day have to face up to what is done and so will anyone who helps them. First, we hear from the White House, then from Canadian broadcaster CTV on their analysis of the situation - www.ctv.ca and whitehouse.gov are the audio souces. US and Canadian law enforcement know after this situation whatever the outcome - the gang and its backers in government in Haiti that allow it to exist - and expect they do have allies if they are committing 80% of the 380 kidnaps reported in the capital of Port-Ah-Prince alone. The country has its problems and it is likely this kidnapping had something to do with the border situation and the asylum seekers who were trying to enter the USA. Expect further that this will get worse with the gang growing stature and perhaps other gangs might be emboldened to hit targets in the Dominican Republic or beyond even up to Puerto RIco, The US has the means and capability and needs to remind this gang who and what they are dealing with at some point moving forward. I have seen this play out before with different groups some ideologues others who were in it purely for the money. On this is clear it may not happen soon but expect one day even a decade down the road those responsible had better hope none of the hostages are harmed. Becuase the wrath of a superpower can be fury beyond what they have ever seen. None of the kidnappers I know of who took part in attacks on Amrtivsnd ot Canadians for or westerners many of them ideologicial foes of the USA ended well, Many are not far off in Gitmo others are sleeping with the fishes. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/mike-k-cohen/support

The gang that kidnapped a group of 17 American and Canadian missionaries in Haiti has asked for $1 million each for their release, a top Haitian official told CNN Tuesday. The 16 American citizens and one Canadian were kidnapped by the powerful "400 Mawozo" gang on Saturday after visiting an orphanage in Croix-des-Bouquets, a northeast suburb of the capital Port-au-Prince, over the weekend.Their abduction is part of a wave of indiscriminate kidnappings that has become more brazen as the country suffers from political instability, civil unrest, lack of quality healthcare and severe poverty.Haitian Justice Minister Liszt Quitel told CNN the kidnappers have demanded a total of $17 million for the group's release and that they were being held in a location outside the suburb. The missionaries are affiliated with the Ohio-based Christian Aid Ministries, which says the abducted group is made up of five men, seven women and five children. The five children abducted include an 8-month-old baby and children ages 3, 6, 13 and 15 years old, Christian Aid Ministries said in a Tuesday statement. The ages of the adults range from 18 to 48, they said.Quitel said that both Haitian police negotiators and the FBI are advising the missionary group on how to proceed and that negotiations are ongoing. FBI agents are on the ground in Haiti assisting with the investigation but are not leading the negotiations, nor have they spoken directly with the kidnappers, he said."The FBI is part of a coordinated US government effort to get the Americans involved to safety. Due to operational considerations, no further information is available at this time," an FBI spokesperson told CNN.The hostages are being held somewhere outside of Croix-des-Bouquets, the Port-au-Prince suburb controlled by the gang, Quitel said."The gang has locations where they usually keep their hostages so that they can feel the hostages are safe. They feel comfortable keeping them there," Quitel told CNN."The kidnappers have been warned about harming the hostages and what may be the consequences for them [if that were to happen]. But they are not swayed by those warnings," said Quitel, adding that the kidnappers are sticking to their demands.A source in Haiti's security forces said that for the moment all hostages are safe. The source added the gang members in contact with authorities appear calm and not nervous. The ransom demands for the missionaries were first reported by the Wall Street Journal. The missionaries were traveling in a sprinter-type van when they left the orphanage on Saturday, according to a person familiar with the matter. The driver of the vehicle was an American who was a part of the group, the person said.Dan Hooley, a former field director for Christian Aid Ministries in Haiti, told CNN Sunday that all of the kidnapped people are believed to have been in one vehicle, and that some were able to contact the organization's local director before they were taken."A couple of fellows right away messaged the director and told him what was going on. And one of them was able to drop a pin, and that's the last thing (the organization) heard until the kidnappers contacted them later in the day," Hooley said. The group had in recent weeks been involved in a rebuilding project for those who lost their homes in August earthquake, according to the Christian Aid Ministries statement. Before the kidnapping, their work across the country included supporting thousands of school children, distributing Bibles and Christian literature, as well as supplying medicine to clinics, teaching Haitian pastors and providing food for the elderly and vulnerable, the statement said."This group of workers has been committed to minister throughout poverty-stricken Haiti," it said.Among the kidnapped are members of a family from the congregation of Dunkard Brethren Church in Hart, Michigan, according to the church's minister, Ron Marks. The family had arrived in Haiti earlier this...

Mix-n-match Covid booster shots could be on their way soon. The FDA may be allowing Americans to switch to another shot when choosing a booster. Preliminary data shows that it is still safe and gives a huge boost to your protection particularly if you had the J&J shot. The Pfizer vaccine boosted antibody levels by a factor of 35 and Moderna raised it 76-fold. Carl Zimmer, columnist at the NY Times, joins us for more on mix-match boosters. Next, the Haitian gang accused of kidnapping American missionaries goes by the name of 400 Mawozo, and they have reportedly asked for $17 million, a ransom of $1 million per hostage. Kidnappings have increased as the president there was recently assassinated and poverty persists throughout the country. This group has been responsible for 80% of the kidnappings in the last few months. Miriam Berger, international news reporter at The Washington Post, joins us for what to know. Finally, nearly 40% of state workers in California remain unvaccinated despite Gov. Gavin Newsom's orders. The orders are to be vaccinated or undergo weekly testing and state workers are lagging compared to the general public. The big hurdle comes soon as state offices begin to reopen and the testing infrastructure still needs to be completed. Wes Venteicher, state worker reporter at the Sacramento Bee, joins us for more.
