Andrew began his career by spending seven years in newspaper journalism. He then logged five years in higher-education marketing, co-managing a college website with a focus on video storytelling and fine-tuning email messaging to 18-year-olds. For the past 7 years, he's worked in B2B software, in marketing operations and then product marketing, with a focus on quantitative and qualitative customer research. Questions and topics we discussed in this interview include: What are the basics of customer research that marketers need to understand as they grow in their careers? When proposing the idea of a Customer Advisory Board (CAB), is it mainly to inform product marketing initiatives? Are there other areas of marketing and business overall that can benefit from the investment in a CAB? How should marketers identify and select the right members and determine the correct size for a Customer Advisory Board? What strategies can marketers use to keep CAB members engaged and active? How should the feedback process with CAB members be structured to ensure it's productive and actionable? What are some other common challenges businesses face when managing CABs, and how should marketers address them? How can marketers measure the success and impact of a Customer Advisory Board on product marketing initiatives? How do the role and operation of a CAB differ in startups versus established SaaS companies? Is there a specific stage in a business's life cycle where a CAB is more beneficial? How is the role of CABs expected to evolve in the next 5 to 10 years? And more! “Fun translates into good performance.” The four things every marketer should know before starting their career: Find a skill (channel) that is the most fun to do. Then specialize. Specialization brings money. Specialization solves hard problems that matter. You take this even further by also specializing in a specific industry (e.g. I specialize in marketing for fintech and insurance orgs at the moment). Understand the business you're marketing. Do your best to think like the CEO. Find an excuse to meet other experts. Personal branding is the easiest way to grow your network of mentors. Create a swipe file. This is not a new or novel suggestion, just one that works. There's a reason other marketing experts do this! We assume that graduating and getting a job is the finish line, but it is the start of a marathon. The problem is that this marathon is very different than the one we just finished. During our school years, we had structure. We were told what to do to get to the next grade and even graduate. But in the career marathon, we don't have the level of support. It is up to us to own our careers and be strategic so that we can continue to level up. That is why in today's episode of the How to Land a Job podcast I brought Maya Grossman to the show. She is a Peak Performance coach with over 15 Years of experience, a best-selling author, and ex-Google and marketing. So if you want to own your career make sure you check out the show.
I had the pleasure of talking to Maya Grossman, Founder of Maya Grossman Consulting, about her experiences as VP of Marketing and how she prioritized her marketing efforts in those critical first 90 days. Maya has 15+ years of marketing experience building brands and driving growth at companies like Microsoft, Google, and most recently Canvas. As the VP of Marketing at Canvas she built the marketing team, grew qualified pipeline 3X Q/Q, doubled ARR Y/Y, and helped secure Series C at $400M valuation. She was also the VP of Marketing at Colu ($40M VC backed startup). Here's what we hit on: What's your process for getting prospects to go from "what is this?" to "I want this!" (HINT: sell the CHANGE, this is the core of product marketing); As VP of Marketing at Canvas, how did you build out the team, build out demand gen, build pipeline and sales, help secure Series C funding...all the things. How you prioritized that role the first 90 days and the results from there (HINT: start by talking to all different people and teams within the company about product, customers, positioning, etc. and see if there's a consistent message at home); How to handle ambitious goals as VP of Marketing (HINT: there will always be ambitious goals, but how to balance that with being realistic and also having quick wins); What would you have done differently while at Canvas; How did you build out your marketing team early stage (HINT: product marketing, content manager, demand gen manager and this took 5-6 months); How did you handle marketing attribution early stage (HINT: you don't have to measure everything, we didn't gate our content, we launched a podcast, community, created demand, created resources); We stopped doing Instagram and Twitter and instead focused on LinkedIn > doing one thing really well versus a bunch of things not well; Now your focus is "how to build a thriving career in marketing" - why did you decide to help people with this; Maya shares her strategy/steps for how to build a thriving career. Hello, MC2C family! In the past couple of years, talk about diversity recruiting and how companies can build a team that mimics the communities that they serve is increasing. As I continue to immerse myself in this subject matter, I have come to the conclusion that there are two main reasons there is not enough diversity in top companies. One of those reasons is that diverse candidates don't know how to get the right visibility from these top companies. On the other hand, top companies don't know how to find the right diverse candidates. Closing these bridges is the challenge that we have. Well, I have found an amazing company that is doing this very well. Canvas! They are on a mission to help the future look like you! To talk about this amazing FREE platform for candidates, I interviewed my good friend and VP of Marketing Maya Grossman on my podcast. You need to think like an owner, which means you want to make sure that you get the most out of everything that you do, and you spend the least" [19:32] "You need to understand that no matter how small your role is, you are part of a bigger machine. You're part of the company and your job is to make that company successful, however you can. And the minute you realize that, you're going to start seeing opportunities to do more and to help more and in most cases, that's going to give you more experience. You can experiment and see what you like, what you don't like. And it's also a great way to set yourself up for a promotion or for your next role." [24:12] "Because if you don't learn and you don't grow, you're basically moving backward. And it's kind of weird. Most people don't read a book after they graduate from college. As we grow up, we were being taught that you need to learn. So you go to school if you're like you go to college. But the minute that ends, there's no motivation to continue learning." [28:38] "It's not just someone who gets things done. It's someone who has the ability to identify a problem. They care enough to ask questions, to dig around, to actually take action when they come across something that doesn't work." [33:17] "If you're a lateral thinker, you're able to take information from different areas, different disciplines, different things you've done in your life, and apply them to come up with a very creative idea." [01:03:08] " I have 15 years of experience and my resume is not two pages long. So if you're early in your career, you do not need twenty thousand bullet points. Less is actually more."
