Send us a textThe transformative power of lived experience drives Monique Allen's mission to revolutionize healthcare access for Native American communities. As a woman who defied doctors' predictions that she wouldn't survive past age 12, Monique has channeled her personal health journey into founding Ma'at Enterprises, a tribally-owned healthcare staffing company serving Indian Health Service facilities nationwide.Named after the Egyptian concept representing truth, balance, and justice, Ma'at embodies Monique's servant leadership philosophy. Her connection to this work deepened upon discovering her own Native American heritage through her mother's tribal connections in Oklahoma, bridging her healthcare expertise with a profound understanding of tribal communities' needs and historical challenges. What sets Ma'at Enterprises apart is Monique's nuanced approach to partnership. Rather than imposing solutions, she builds trust by respecting tribal sovereignty and ensuring communities maintain ownership of their healthcare journey. This stands in stark contrast to broken promises that have characterized much of the historical relationship between government agencies and Native Nations. As Monique powerfully states, "We are not just trying to colonize your data... we want to partner with you."The innovative services Ma'at provides extend beyond traditional staffing to include partnerships with Hospitals Without Borders for rapidly deployable modular clinics, telehealth solutions for remote communities, and connections to cutting-edge diagnostic technologies. These approaches address the stark reality that in 2025, many tribal reservations still lack basic infrastructure like clean water and reliable internet access.Guided by her faith and commitment to authentic service, Monique carefully vets potential collaborations to ensure alignment with Ma'at's mission. Her goal is clear: to become a trusted resource for Native American communities by proving reliability through demonstrated action rather than empty promises. Through this work, she's not just delivering healthcare services – she's helping to heal historical wounds while building pathways to a healthier future for Indigenous communities across America. Thanks for tuning in to this episode of Follow The Brand! “One of the jokes I have in coaching is, the surefire way to kill passion is to build a business around it, or marry it”. Monique Allen will tell you that entrepreneurship is it's own special kind of trauma, and it needs a special kind of business coaching. Monique is a professional gardener who has spent almost four decades in the industry. Over that time, running her own landscaping business she began to see a crucial need amongst her fellow creatives and trade-based entrepreneurs: they had started a business because they loved their work, and then suddenly they became managers and stopped actually doing that work that they loved. So she developed a fascinating coaching method that focuses on the unique struggles of trade-based entrepreneurs.“Nature is a system”, Monique tells us. “It's the living and non-living things in connection with each other, with the overlay of energy and human interaction. This isn't all that much different than how businesses are formed”. In this episode, Monique shares the story behind “Lifescaping”, her coaching method inspired by the elements of all healthy ecosystems. Lifescaping helps business owners push beyond their barriers and thrive as entrepreneurs.About Monique AllenMonique founded The Garden Continuum - a regenerative landscape design/build and fine gardening firm celebrating its 25th year in business. She is the creator of the Life-Scape Method for land development. As the Lifescape Coach, she's interpreted this simple method into a system to teach service-business entrepreneurs how to develop more satisfying ownership experiences. Ambition isn't a dirty word. It's not about greed or want – it's about richness. It's about wanting to understand. Today's guest, Monique Allen, couples ambition with curiosity. She is not looking for a recipe or a blueprint for how to find success – she's someone who looks at convention and asks, is there more? Monique is the Founder and Creative Director of The Garden Continuum. She uses her knowledge as a lifelong gardener, business developer, and educator to bridge the gap between landscaping and business building. She launched her coaching career with the Life-Scape Method, a strategy developed to guide people toward improving their land, lives, and professional satisfaction. Monique couples ambition with curiosity. Yes, she wants to grow achieve financial security and success, but she's also hungry for expansion and knowledge. The benefit of seeking ambition through curiosity is that when you're able to bring out the best experience, you can shift that satisfaction to the people you serve. I use abundance and ambition almost interchangeably. When I talk about abundance, it's knowing there isn't just one way to do something. We get myopia, and we home in on that one thing because it's what everyone else is doing. Monique says when we ask, “Is there more?” It's asking if you can access something that's deeper or richer. It's an abundance of satisfaction, an abundance of health, an abundance of connection, an abundance of resilience. It's taking all of these “softer terms” that are about being able to have access through awareness and that abundance and ambition through curiosity. It's also about recognizing we have an abundance of options. We're here to live a life of freedom and joy. But Monique notes that people aren't really taught how to make choices through abundance; we're taught through a binary: This is right. This is wrong. She finds in her practice, people will stall out, and abundance seems to be a hurdle rising from people's pasts. It's scarcity that's built into the binary. If we think there is only one right way to do it, people spin out, trying to find that path. Scarcity is fear that you're going to get it wrong. That's a myth. You can't get it wrong. Everything you're attempting is adding to who you are, and it's adding to your experience. When we face the fear of “too much” it's really just the flip side of “not enough.” What we have to do – as entrepreneurs and as people – is right in front of us right now. What we have is what feels the most congruent in that moment – and anything else we'll add on later once we get it down. One of Sarah's first coaches was a concert pianist. She would sit down and play a two-hour piece. She told Sarah she worked on a measure at a time. One measure is four counts. She would work on that one piece until it became a part of her, and she could add another. Monique says when we think about entrepreneurship, people think of the get-rich-quick schemes. But we build our skills as an entrepreneur one measure at a time, one sale at a time, one contract at a time. TITLE: Regenerative Business Coach Monique Allen Monique Allen, is CEO and Creative Director of The Garden Continuum, a landscaping design company that brings the principles of regenerative agriculture to ornamental gardening. The central work of The Garden Continuum is to create outdoor living spaces, both public and private, that draw people out into those spaces and begin to build that reconnection with nature. Monique's approach infuses life back into systems and landscapes that have been abused by degenerative practices. Through regenerative gardening, Monique breathes new life into the soil, and through her personalized landscape business coaching she helps clients build a high-integrity business reflecting care for the entire earth community. Check out her book, Stop Landscaping, Start Lifescaping. Show Highlights The garden continuum and understanding regenerative business and the landscape movement. Jumpstart ecosystems and create an energetic loop on projects. Understanding the conundrum of care to create longevity and not just sustainable. Monique shares how to partner with mother nature on projects. Match your work with clients and people who are already invested emotionally, mentally, financially in what you do. The built environment needs to embrace creating “healthy sites” and not just regenerative spaces. Approach landscaping differently with a “codify” tool to help you stop landscaping and start life. Know the difference in a landscape as something pretty to look at, compared with “Life-Scapeing,” a space you interact with nature in. “Have that triple bottom line mindset where it's: planet, people, and profits. One cannot happen without the other. It's not a question of its linearity. You roll these three aims of planet, people, and profits together. You are always looking through that triple lens to say, ‘Is this project creating a betterment or is it at least somewhat neutral,' but it just can't be degrading or detrimental.” -Monique Allen Show Resource and Information Connect with Charlie Cichetti and GBES GBES is excited our membership community is growing. In today's episode, we are hearing from Monique Allen, the founder of the Garden Continuum and design-build and care company. She would typically be described as a landscaper/ a contractor/ or an installer. I chose to release this episode after the 2022 ASLA conference and the COP27 conference have wrapped because, our dedication to creating a greener world, heavily relies on the people who build the projects we envision. In our conversation, we discuss the experience of working in an industry that is historically unbalanced in work/life, masculine/feminine, and in access to education. As landscape architects, it is important to understand how our allied fields perceive us and our work. If you take anything away from today's episode, I hope it is learning how to collaborate in order to create a better future and landscape for us all. Monique has dedicated her career to creating an alternative approach and sharing actionable information on how to spread a positive message about how we can all improve our land, our lives, and our professional satisfaction through her book and method titled Life-Scaping and compassionate business building. www.thegardencontinuum.com www.thelandscapenerd.com --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thelandscapenerd/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thelandscapenerd/support
Host Dori Stewart's guest on this episode of Teacher Turned Entrepreneur has succeeded in a man's world by embracing her feminine power. After years of trying to compete in a male-dominated landscaping industry, Monique Allen redefined her brand by leaning into her uniquely feminine perspective. As CEO & Creative Director at The Garden Continuum, she has grown a seven-figure business based on a culture that was authentic to her and aligned with her values. When she first put her hands in the soil nearly four decades ago, Monique just knew: “I felt alive ... It was just primal. That was the spark.” The daughter of entrepreneurial immigrant parents, starting her own business was a natural progression for Monique, who was determined to turn her passion into a “legitimate” enterprise. She did exactly that and much more by developing an entire methodology beautifully expressed in her book, “Stop Landscaping, Start Life-Scaping.” Monique shares tips for creating space, overcoming friction and staying relevant in a man's world while embracing a feminine perspective. And she makes no apologies! Here are key takeaways from the conversation:· If you regard it as a “real job” but others do not, you can create legitimacy by putting an entrepreneurial structure around the venture – whatever it might be!· Passion is a key ingredient – the spark that starts a business – but on its own is not enough to sustain and grow that business. For that, look to your differentiators and create a method. · You have to start out with a “big, fluffy” dream! But that vision must then be honed and defined by a roadmap and actions steps to follow.· Growing a business is a regenerative process, much like cultivating a garden. It requires a constant infusion of life and adaptation to changing conditions.· Don't apologize! You have earned the right to be confident, so don't be shy about leaning in and claiming exactly what you want and need.· Are you a brand ambassador? Every business venture needs one, but the mantle has to fit and be authentic to who you really are.· Are you in a male-dominated sector, trying to compete by being one of the guys? It may be time to embrace the feminine and give that valuable perspective a voice at the table.· If you're running into friction, try this mindset shift: Embrace the people who are bugging you the most. It opens a path to resolution through compassion rather than resentment. Are you ready to find your true calling and walk away from your teaching job once and for all?It is your time to get a solid grasp on the potential opportunities available to you so you can get started on your entrepreneurial journey and change your life!Download your copy of this free, valuable PDF resource and access 20 different descriptive business ideas that are perfect for a teacher turning entrepreneur. The Teacher's Guide to Finding Your Perfect Business Idea (without going back to college)

In this episode of the Thoughtful Entrepreneur, your host Josh Elledge talks to the founder of https://www.thegardencontinuum.com/ (The Garden Continuum), Monique Allen. The Garden Continuum builds and maintains beautiful landscapes. On their website, The Garden Continuum shares that landscape is more than a “thing” that surrounds a house or business. Your landscape can become a Life‑Scape™; a special, beautiful and functional part of your property. The Garden Continuum strives to enrich the human experience by considering your unique personality, the natural features of your land, and the environmental impacts of design and installation. This is what sets Monique and her company apart. Monique shares the different types of providers within the landscaping space. She shares her story about how she fell into this space when she met someone in college who suggested she try her hand at landscaping. She realized for the first time that she felt alive while doing work and she hasn't steered away from that drive since. Josh and Monique explore how this has typically been a male-skewed industry, especially back in the 80s when she started The Garden Continuum. Women tended to only work on the stylistic end of things back then – Monique shares that she wanted to break that mold and do all of the work, including the hard physical labor. The Garden Continuum has more females on their team and the space has seen more women in these roles, she shares. Monique also explains that she is nurturing and compassionate above all else. She's tough, but she also knows how to get results. She approached the trade without being hard on her team, and this has made all the difference. Monique and Josh also talk about the evolution of trade-based businesses. Most people are passionate about these trades and start as technicians. As you learn and become more adept, you become a master. That's when you start asking yourself why you shouldn't work for yourself. There has been a shift in the space and trade service owners need to understand that their teams are experiencing burnout – enough to put some companies out of business. It's the job of trade service owners to build the next generation of trade workers. Turnover is higher than ever in the trade services, so providing roles for technicians that encourage good company culture will result in retention. Don't HUNT for the perfect employee in a trade space; you have to attract them. Want to learn more? How do we grieve an abuser? I am so grateful to Monique Allen for being willing to share so openly on this episode. This is a conversation that is very underrepresented in the dialogue about grief. There aren't enough spaces talking openly about grief in any capacity, but in the ones that do exist so often it's a conversation around healing from the loss of someone described by all as a great person. While no one is perfect, the dead sometimes take on a Saint like quality in the minds of those left behind. But for some grievers whose loved ones were difficult or even abusive in life, it is not so easy to imagine them with rose colored glasses. Still, the pain and grief of losing someone who was abusive or sometimes hard to love is no less valid and no less painful. I believe this type of grief can be even more complex because of the seeming opposition of the persons imperfection, with our very real feelings of love and heartbreak at their loss. Add to this the trauma from our past interactions with them getting triggered and kicked up by the loss, and you have a very courageous healing journey. The choice to forgive an abuser is an extremely personal one, but one Monique made for herself and her own healing. If you are grieving an abusive parent (even if they are still alive), a mentally ill loved one or even the loss of a toxic relationship, I hope this conversation is healing for you and a reminder that you are not alone. Regardless of how your person acted in life, your feelings of loss are valid, as are feelings of relief or anything else that comes up. Monique Allen, Founder & Creative Director of The Garden Continuum, is a master creator, interactive employer, published author, and fierce industry advocate. In over three decades, she has witnessed the landscape trade become extremely popular and commercialized, which has eroded the sustainability of our landscapes while undermining our ability to feel satisfaction from them. As the founder of the Life-Scape Method, a lifelong gardener, business developer and educator, Monique has dedicated her career to creating an alternative approach and sharing actionable information on how to spread a positive message about how can all improve our land, our lives, and our professional satisfaction through Life-Scaping and compassionate business building. In addition to running her own 7-figure business and publishing her first book, “STOP Landscaping, START Life-Scaping”, Monique is also an active business coach, specializing in branding, team building, curating a positive company culture, and succeeding as a woman in a male-dominated industry. When Monique isn't Life Scaping, she can be found spending time with family, cooking up new creations in the kitchen, practicing yoga, or stand-up paddleboarding.
In this episode of Green Industry Pros' Grass Roots, Editor Ryan Whisner talks to Monique Allen, author of “Stop Landscaping Start Life-Scaping, A Guide to Ending the Rush-rush, Humdrum Approach to Landscape Development and Care,” about some of the steps small businesses can take to have a win for the planet, people and profits. Allen highlights the concept of life-scaping and how it is about elevating the entire industry to more success. For more information visit https://www.thegardencontinuum.com

[38:54] How to learn more about Monique Allen [41:00] Blooper Reel! Why did Monique decide to scale her business? Monique bought a house, got married, and was about to have a baby. So she wanted a wedge between her personal life and her business. At the time, she had six or seven employees. She wanted to do more of what she excelled at. She decided to gather people around her that had expertise in areas she didn't. She continued adding hires that lined up to elevate the company. It allowed her to have support and have the impact she desired. She notes that you can look at your skillset as four quadrants: incompetence, competence, excellence, and genius. She emphasizes that you can't scale your business if you're working in your competence. You have to be working in your genius (at the very least, something you excel at). Monique learned to let go of what she was competent at to spend time working in her zone of genius. That's where your business starts to catapult. Monique believes the hardest part is to hand off the design work or the client contact. But she has a team that she completely trusts to complete a project—all because she niched down. When you choose a niche, you'll begin to attract your perfect employee or design partner. Those people are ambassadors of your design strategy. What is another mindset shift business owners have to make to scale their business? Why did she shift from hourly pricing to packaged services? Listen to hear Monique's thoughts! Building a business from one employee to 18 Monique hired her first W-2 employee in 1991. In 2000, she had six employees. She'll have 22 employees in 2021. At one point, Monique had capped her business at $1.5 million. She was bringing the right clients in and she wanted to hit $2 million, but she realized she needed to shore up her organizational chart and have role clarity in place first. She worked on that for several years. Now she's in a place where she's working to scale her business to $2.5 million. Monique has a corporate team and a production team. Her production team consists of two production leads with direct reports. As the creative director, she makes sure that the strategy around marketing, sales, and onboarding clients is done well. Her tagline is that she is the gardener of people. Her job is to make sure all the people—both clients and employees—are being supported. How does scaling her business bring her freedom? What was her dream for herself that she extended to her employees? Listen to learn more! One mistake Monique says NOT to make Monique says that as a business owner, you have to be clear that there isn't anyone out there who is going to rescue you. She states: “There isn't a hire, a client, a job, or software, that is going to rescue you.” Monique believed that if she hired the right person, that everything would fall into place. She was repeatedly disappointed until she realized she needed to embody her vision and direct things the way she wanted them to go. She had to release the death grip she had on the idea that someone would rescue her from the hard work of owning the business. Bio for Monique Allen Monique Allen is a Business Coach, Life-Scape & Regenerative Landscape Professional and CEO & Creative Director of The Garden Continuum, a landscape design/build and fine gardening company in Massachusetts. Episode highlightAs a bilingual Armenian-American, Monique Allen had a plethora of cultural influences in her childhood. Listen in on how she combined the many identities she holds to establish her own workplace culture in the landscaping industry.LinksEmail: Monique@TheGardenContinuum.com Website: www.TheGardenContinuum.comSocial media: @monique.allen, @thegardencontinuumLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/moniquetgc/Quotes“When I felt the safest, it was when I was connected to the ground.”“It's hard to believe in nature and not believe in a force that's a little bit greater than your gas pedal.”TakeawaysChildhood IncidentsAs a child, Monique visited her maternal grandparents in the Allegheny Mountains in Maryland, where she felt a “cellular connection” to nature. She grew up with a “3rd culture mindset”, living in Paris and then in an Armenian community in the United States, speaking Armenian, French and English.Influential Groups Even though Armenian cuisine is her comfort food, Monique has always felt like an “outsider Armenian”, because she isn't as fluent in the language. Her Christian friend and her family took Monique under their wing, and she immersed herself in the religion. Temperament and Personality InfluencesMonique has a naturally positive mood and outlook but can also be serious and demanding of herself and other people, which she attributes to her “abrasive upbringing”. She has had to unlearn any destructive behaviours from the past and reconnect to her easy temperament. Cultural EpiphaniesMonique once had an employee who had the vision, skills and abilities for the job, but she couldn't find a cultural common ground with her. When another employee said she may not be a cultural fit, Monique began learning about culture in the workplace and how that fits in with her company.Advice to an Employer Monique is a stickler for organization, clear communication and data - “Vagaries make me crazy”, she quips. However, she does not believe in micromanaging and even works in a separate space from her employees, so they can be autonomous in a “trust culture”. More Great Insights! Visit Monique's website to buy her book, Stop Landscaping, Start Lifescaping, read her blog and access many resources to get started in this field.
