Jag kan ha god kunskap om fladdermusens livsvillkor, men det hjälper mig inte till insikt i dess medvetande. Det närmsta jag kan komma är att vara en människa som föreställer mig att jag är en fladdermus.Så argumenterar filosofen Thomas Nagel i sin berömda artikel ”What Is It Like to Be a Bat?”. 2010 startades bloggen ”What is it like to be a woman in philosophy?”, vars titel anspelar på Nagels resonemang om medvetandets subjektiva natur. Till skillnad från fladdermöss kan dock kvinnor tala, och här har i snart femton år hundratals vittnat anonymt om allt från stulna idéer till våldtäkter.När jag läser bloggen slås jag inte bara av övergreppen, utan också av den smetiga gråzon av förolämpningar som ska utgöra spelplatsen för kvinnornas tankeverksamhet. Någon blir presenterad för en gästforskare med att hon ”alltid har så fina naglar”. Någon blir nekad att skriva in sig på en kurs efter att professorn bara har utvärderat hennes utseende. Någon får höra att hennes graviditet minskar chansen att bli befordrad.”Jag vill sluta”, skriver en kvinna. ”Men jag vill inte tvingas ut. Jag älskar filosofi, men det känns som om jag har fastnat på en fruktansvärd plats.”Kvinnornas historia inom den akademiska filosofin är kort. Den första kvinnan som blev professor i filosofi i Sverige var Lili Alanen, 1997. Även om situationen har förändrats så dröjer sig historien kvar. Som den amerikanska filosofen Regan Penaluna formulerar det: ”Vår kultur underskattar svårigheterna en kvinna möter när hon gör någonting som hennes mormor, farmor och mamma inte uppmuntrades eller tilläts att göra.”I boken ”How to Think Like a Woman” försöker hon gå till botten med varför hon själv lämnade akademin. Ingen betedde sig öppet fientligt mot henne. Ändå hade hon en gnagande känsla av att inte vara där på lika villkor. Hon berättar att professorerna vägrade träffa de kvinnliga doktoranderna utanför vanliga kontorstider, men gärna tog emot grabbarna sent. Penaluna fick höra historier om hur hennes manliga kollegor bondade med sina handledare över öl, hade middagar i varandras hem och bytte jazzskivor med varandra.Filosofi är inte något ensamt tänkande. Ända sedan antikens Grekland har disciplinen bedrivits i form av samtal. Man kan inte hitta sin röst utan ett samtalsklimat där man blir hörd och respekterad. Gräver man ner sig i biografierna om det fåtal kvinnor som gjort avtryck i filosofihistorien upptäcker man alltid att de haft viktiga samtalspartners, och ofta verkat under historiska undantagstillstånd. Under andra världskriget förändrades till exempel villkoren vid de stora universiteten i England drastiskt. Mellan 1939 och 1942 befolkades plötsligt klassrummen i Oxford bara av vapenvägrare, funktionsnedsatta, flyktingar och kvinnor. ”Kvinnorna började också fylla ett annat slags plats som blivit ledig: den som de kvarvarande lärarnas skyddslingar”, skriver Benjamin Lipscomb.I hans kollektivbiografi ”Oxfordkvartetten” skildras hur avgörande den här tiden blev för filosoferna Elizabeth Anscombe, Philippa Foot, Mary Midgley och Iris Murdoch. De antogs inte bara som studenter vid en världsledande institution, utan kunde också ta plats där på ett sätt som saknar historiskt motstycke. Nära, livslånga relationer kunde skapas med mentorer som inte längre hade några ynglingar att dricka öl och byta jazzskivor med. Som Midgley beskriver det var det ”mycket lättare för kvinnor att göra sig hörda i diskussionerna än vad som är fallet i normala tider”.Men det här var länge sedan, kanske du tänker nu. Är det ens ett problem längre? Jo, tyvärr är kvinnornas underordning inom den akademiska filosofin ett statistiskt säkerställt faktum, också i Sverige. Grundkurserna har ett ganska jämt antal antagna, men ju högre upp man kommer i nivåerna, desto färre blir kvinnorna. Bland filosofiprofessorerna är fortfarande en förkrossande majoritet män.Såhär illa är det inte inom någon annan gren av humaniora. Vad är det som gör filosofin till en så specifikt ogästvänlig miljö för kvinnor? Forskning visar att ämnen där man tror att medfödd begåvning är avgörande för framgång har en skevare könsfördelning. Och filosofi förknippas enligt dessa studier mer med tron på en medfödd förmåga än någon annan disciplin, till och med matematik och fysik.Det tycks alltså vara självtvivlen som får kvinnor att lämna filosofin. Så var det åtminstone för Penaluna. Men självtvivel skapar man inte bara själv. På bloggen om att vara kvinna inom filosofin vittnar ungefär lika många om att få uppmärksamhet för sitt utseende, som om att knappt få någon uppmärksamhet alls. Även om de manliga professorerna säger sig lyssna så ställer de inga följdfrågor, och citerar sällan kvinnors texter.Kritikern Lili Loofbourow har kallat den här typen av ignorans för ”the male glance”, det manliga ögonkastet. Till skillnad från den manliga blicken, som objektifierar kvinnor, så är det manliga ögonkastet flyktigt och svalt. Det slutar i en axelryckning, skriver Loofbourow, och gör kanske en hyfsad bedömning. ”Men det är farligt, eftersom det bara kastar en blick men tror att det läser.”Även om de formella kraven nu har undanröjts för att kvinnor ska kunna göra karriär inom den akademiska filosofin så är villkoren fortfarande ojämna. För att förstå varför måste man fråga sig hur det är att ha en kvinnlig filosofs medvetande. Penaluna menar själva kunskapssökandet för många tänkande kvinnor tar form som självtvivel.Simone de Beauvoir hävdar i Det andra könet att den inre splittringen är ”kvinnans kanske allvarligaste handikapp”. Kulturellt uppmuntrad till att bli uppslukad av sina förälskelser så engagerar sig kvinnan mindre helhjärtat i sitt arbete, skriver de Beauvoir, och ”därigenom dömer hon sig själv till att förbli underlägsen.”Det har funnits flera viktiga kvinnliga filosofer, men knappast några stora genier. Kanske är feministen Germaine Greers resonemang om konsthistorien överförbart till filosofin. Det har inte funnits någon kvinnlig Sokrates, någon kvinnlig Hegel eller Wittgenstein: ”men”, skriver Greer, ”det beror inte på att kvinnor är utrustade med livmoder, att de kan föda barn, att de har mindre hjärnor, att de inte har kraft och uthållighet”. Abstract: Background: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by neuronal and synaptic loss, resulting in an imbalance of excitatory and inhibitory synaptic transmission and potentially cognitive impairment. Current methods for measuring the excitation/inhibition (E/I) ratio are mostly invasive, but recent research combining neurocomputational modeling with measurements of local field potentials has indicated that the slope with which the power spectrum of neuronal activity captured by electro- and/or magnetoencephalography rolls off, is a non-invasive biomarker of the excitation/inhibition (E/I) ratio. A steeper roll-off is associated with a stronger inhibition. This novel method can be applied to assess the E/I ratio in people with multiple sclerosis (pwMS), detect the effect of medication such as benzodiazepines, and explore its utility as a biomarker. Methods: We recruited 44 healthy control subjects and 95 people with multiple sclerosis (pwMS) who underwent resting-state magnetoencephalographic recordings. The 1/f spectral slope of the neural power spectra was calculated for each subject and for each brain region. Results: As expected, the spectral slope was significantly steeper in pwMS treated with benzodiazepines compared to pwMS not receiving this medication (p = 0.01). In the sub-cohort of pwMS not treated with benzodiazepines, we observed a steeper slope in cognitively impaired pwMS compared to cognitively preserved pwMS (p = 0.01) and healthy subjects (p = 0.02). Furthermore, we observed a significant correlation between 1/f slope and verbal and spatial working memory functioning in the brain regions located in the prefrontal and parietal cortex. Conclusions: In this study, we highlighted the value of the spectral slope, a novel non-invasive biomarker of the E/I ratio, in MS by quantifying the inhibitory effect of benzodiazepines and by putting it forward as a potential biomarker of cognitive deficits in pwMS. Abstract: The ability to generate humor gives rise to positive emotions and thus facilitate the successful resolution of adversity. Although there is consensus that inhibitory processes might be related to broaden the way of thinking, the neural underpinnings of these mechanisms are largely unknown. Here, we use functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging, a humorous alternative uses task and a stroop task, to investigate the brain mechanisms underlying the emergence of humorous ideas in 24 subjects. Neuroimaging results indicate that greater cognitive control abilities are associated with increased activation in the amygdala, the hippocampus and the superior and medial frontal gyrus during the generation of humorous ideas. Examining the neural mechanisms more closely shows that the downregulation of frontal brain regions is associated with an upregulation in the amygdala, which is concurrently linked with an increased number of humorous ideas and enhanced amygdala responses during the task. Our data therefore suggests that a neural antagonism previously related to the emergence and regulation of negative affective responses, is linked with the generation of emotionally positive ideas and may represent an important neural pathway supporting mental health. Abstract: Impaired social functioning is a hallmark of schizophrenia and altered functional integration between distant brain regions are expected to account for signs and symptoms of the disorder. The functional neuroarchitecture of a network relevant for social functioning, the mentalizing network, is however poorly understood. In this study we examined dysfunctions of the mentalizing network in patients with schizophrenia compared to healthy controls via dynamic causal modelling and an interactive social decision-making game. Network characteristics were analyzed on a single subject basis whereas graph theoretic metrics such as in-degree, out-degree and edge-connectivity per network node were compared between the groups. The results point to a sparser network structure in patients with schizophrenia and highlight the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex as a disconnected network hub receiving significantly less input from other brain regions in the network. Further analyses suggest that integrating pathways from the right and the left temporo-parietal junction into the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex were less frequently found in patients with schizophrenia. Brain and behavior analyses further suggest that the connectivity-intactness within the entire network is associated with functional interpersonal behavior during the task. Thus, the neurobiological alterations within the mentalizing network in patients with schizophrenia point to a specific integration deficit between core brain regions underlying the generation of higher-order representations and thereby provide a potential treatment target. Maar eentje die je niet snel zult horen is dat Amerikaanse mannen wél hun nagels laten doen. Dit doen zo blijkt uit onderzoek Nederlandse mannen in stuk mindere mate. Er lijkt in Nederland nog steeds een taboe op het laten behandelen van de nagels in een nagelstudio onder mannen. Gek genoeg werd het 10 jaar geleden veel vaker gedaan dan nu. Hoe komt dat? Letzte Woche war ich im Amt für Statistik und Wahlen der Landeshauptstadt Düsseldorf. Dort hat mir Dirk Nagels, der zur Arbeitsgruppe gehört, die das Open Data Portal Düsseldorf im im Dezember 2017 freigeschaltet hat, erläutert, worum es bei der "Befreiung der Verwaltungsdaten" geht und welche ersten praktischen Anwendungen es gibt. So gibt es beispielsweise schon eine App, mit der man unter Verwendung von Daten des phänologischen Gartens Düsseldorf und des Gartenamts nachschauen kann, wo in Düsseldorf gerade im öffentlichen Raum welches Obst reif ist. Es gibt auch erste Bestrebungen, wie man den Schulunterricht mit Bezug auf Daten der eigenen Stadt interessanter gestalten kann, indem man nüchterne Zahlenwüsten des städtischen Haushaltplans geschickt visualisiert. Oder man kann sich in Echtzeit anschauen, wie hoch gerade an bestimmten Meßtellen die Stickoxidbelastung ist. Das Portal befindet sich zwar noch im Aufbau, stellt aber schon heute eine Menge nützlicher Informationen bereit. So ist mir unter anderem auf der Website ein Stadtplan Düsseldorfs aufgefallen, in dem sämtliche öffentlichen Toiletten eingezeichnet sind.

Szene A: Aber ich hab’ gedacht, du wolltest immer eine große Familie haben!?! Neee, wollte ich eigentlich nicht! Mir hätten ein Kind und vielleicht noch ein Hund völlig gereicht. Lea, Michi, Felix, Anna, Till - kommt wir gehen. Der Papa will uns nicht! Szene B: Ich hab’ gedacht, Du magst Musicals. Na ja, die ersten beiden waren ja auch noch ganz okay, aber als du dann vor drei Jahren mit der Dauerkarte um die Ecke kamst, war ich schon ziemlich geschockt. Aber wieso hast du denn in der ganzen Zeit nie was gesagt? Ja, weil ich dachte, dass du dann sauer bist, wenn du weißt, dass ich Musicals eigentlich total bescheuert finde. Soll das heißen, du findest mich bescheuert, weil ich Musicals mag? Siehst Du, genau deshalb hab’ ich nichts gesagt! Zugegeben: es mögen viele Gründe dafür existieren, warum man dem Gespräch mit seinem Partner so manches Mal aus dem Weg geht. Am Institut für Psychologie der Uni Göttingen hat man dieses Problem vor zwei Jahren mal etwas genauer unter die Lupe genommen und zwar, indem 18.000 Männer und Frauen zu ihrem Kommunikationsverhalten in der Partnerschaft befragt wurden. Und dabei kam heraus: erschreckende 82% scheuen sich vor wichtigen Gesprächen; das vermeintlich starke Geschlecht dabei deutlich öfter als die Damenwelt. Aber, ganz egal, ob nun in der Partnerschaft oder in ganz gewöhnlichen Alltagssituationen, die Form des mit sich selbst Kommunizierens - auch Denken genannt - bringt in vielen Fällen oft nur eins, nämlich: nichts. Ein Paradebeispiel für die völlig sinnlose Vermeidung eines Gesprächs bzw. im nachstehenden Fall einer simplen Frage, findet sich in einem Buch des inzwischen verstorbenen Kommunikationswissenschaftlers und Psychotherapeuten Paul Watzlawick, der sich - durch seine populärwissenschaftlich anmutenden Schriften - einer gewissen Bekanntheit erfreute (zumindest denke ich, dass er das tat). In ‚Anleitung zum Unglücklichsein’ erzählt Watzlawick die Geschichte eines Mannes, der zum Einschlagen eines Nagels einen Hammer benötigt, den er aber nicht im Hause hat. Also beschließt der Mann, seinen Nachbarn zu fragen, ob dieser ihm denn das Werkzeug leihen würde. Doch dann begeht unser hammerloser Heimwerker einen Fehler: er beginnt zu denken. Ihm fällt ein, der Nachbar habe ihn in letzter Zeit flüchtiger gegrüßt als sonst üblich. Vielleicht sei das ja ein Indiz dafür, dass dieser in Eile gewesen sei. Vielleicht stecke aber auch mehr dahinter und der Nachbar würde ihn - unseren Hammerlosen - nicht mögen und ihm womöglich auch gar keinen Hammer leihen wollen. In einer sich nun anschließenden - schier endlosen - Spirale des sich Hineinsteigerns in negatives Gedankengut, wähnt sich unser Denkender schließlich in einer ihm feindlich gesonnenen Welt. Mit dieser Überzeugung im Gepäck, klingelt er bei seinem Nachbar, dieser öffnet die Tür und bekommt sofort zu hören: „Behalten Sie Ihren Hammer, Sie Rüpel!“. Und weil das mit Denken eine weit verbreitete Problematik zu sein scheint, hat man sich dieser natürlich auch schon filmisch angenommen. Im Katastrophenfilm ‚Twister’ beispielsweise wird ziemlich deutlich, was dabei herauskommt, wenn man beim Sich-gegenseitig-Kennenlernen aus gewissen Aussagen falsche Schlüsse zieht, weil man - genau - nicht nachgefragt hat.„Ich dachte, als du sagtest, du würdest Tornados jagen, das wäre nichts weiter als eine Metapher.“ Tja, wenn man diesen Satz sagt, mitten in besagtem Tornado drinsteckt und vielleicht kurz vorher auch noch beim Friseur war ... dann ist das schon ein bisschen doof! Eindeutlich mehr als doof ist es jedoch, wenn man dem Denken eine fatale Handlung folgen lässt, die für den Anderen unter Umständen mit einem nicht ganz so glückvollen Ende einhergeht, wie in der Komödie ‚Boomerang’: „Entschuldigung, dass ich sie erschossen habe, aber ich dachte sie wollten mich ausrauben!“. Einleitung: In der operativen Versorgung von Frakturen der Tibia ist nach heutigem Standard die Marknagelung Methode der Wahl. Der neu konzipierte Titan US-Nagel Depuy ACE Aim Dynamic weist einige design- und funktionsspezifische Besonderheiten im Vergleich zum vorherigen Modell auf. Hierzu zählen die Bohrung des Nagels für die Verwendung von Führungsdrähten, welche am oberen Ende in eine Schlitzung mündet, und die konische Fräsung der Löcher für die erleichterte Einbringung der Verriegelungsbolzen. Vom Vorgängermodell wurden 220 Nägel eingesetzt, es kam in keinem Fall zu einem Materialversagen. Beantwortet sollte daher für die klinische Anwendung die Frage werden, ob die Änderung des Designs zu sog. Sollbruchstellen am Nagel bzw. im Nagel-Bolzen-System führt. Methode: Geprüft wurden zwei Gruppen á 5 Nägeln auf einer Zwick 010. Zur Untersuchung der maximalen Belastbarkeit (Peak load) von 8mm Nägeln am Übergang Zylinder- in U-Form (Schlitzung im proximalen Bereich) kam eine standartisierte Vier-Punkt-Biegung mit neu konzipierter Probenhalterung gemäß der Empfehlungen der ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) für die Prüfung intramedullärer Osteosynthesematerialien (Stützweite L=11,4cm; Last-Stütz-Abstand s=3,8cm; Lastweite c=3,8cm) zum Einsatz. Die Daten dieser Messungen im Schlitzbereich (5) wurden verglichen mit den Ergebnissen einer Belastungsprüfung im weiter distal gelegenen, zylindrischen Bereich des Nagels (5). Für die Prüfung des Nagel-Bolzensystems verwendeten wir auf Grund der zentralen Bohrung für Führungsdrähte eine modifizierte Vier-Punkt-Biegung mit ebenfalls neu konzipierter Probenhalterung. Die Peak load von 36mm Verriegelungsschrauben mit 4,5mm Gewindedurchmesser, eingeschraubt in eine Buchenhartholzhülse mit 19mm Stützweite, bei direkter Kraftübertragung mittels Standard-8mm-Nagels, wurde bestimmt. Ergebnisse: Die Grenze von elastischer zu plastischer Verformung der gepüften Nägel wurde im Schlitzbereich bei einer Last von F = 4.218 N, also einem um 17,68% geringeren Biegemoment erreicht (Rp0.1 bei 80,14 Nm;) als in zylindrischen Abschnitten (F = 5.049,5N). Im physiologischen Bereich kam es zu keinem Nagelbruch. Unter Verwendung des neuen Nagel-Bolzen-Systems kam es zum Bruch der geprüften Verriegelungsbolzen bei einer durchschnittlichen axialen Last von 2.510 N. Dies entspricht einem um 13,12% geringeren Biegemoment (Rp0.1 bei 8,16 Nm;) als unter Verwendung des Vorgängermodels. Zusammenfassung: Der zur operativen Versorgung von Tibiafrakturen neu konzipierte standardmäßig verwandte US-Nagel Depuy ACE Aim Dynamic ist ein außergewöhnlich sicheres System, was aus unseren Testergebnissen abgeleitet werden kann. Zwar zeigt dieser im Vergleich zu seinem Vorgängermodell Schwächen in der Belastbarkeit des Nagel-Bolzen-Systems. Dies erscheint aber unter Berücksichtigung der gängigen postoperativen Belastungssteigerung als unproblematisch.

Abstract: Human brain activity is not merely responsive to environmental context but includes intrinsic dynamics, as suggested by the discovery of functionally meaningful neural networks at rest, i.e., even without explicit engagement of the corresponding function. Yet, the neurophysiological coupling mechanisms distinguishing intrinsic (i.e., task-invariant) from extrinsic (i.e., task-dependent) brain networks remain indeterminate. Here, we investigated functional brain integration using magnetoencephalography throughout rest and various tasks recruiting different functional systems and modulating perceptual/cognitive loads. We demonstrated that two distinct modes of neural communication continually operate in parallel: extrinsic coupling supported by phase synchronization and intrinsic integration encoded in amplitude correlation. Intrinsic integration also contributes to phase synchronization, especially over short (second-long) timescales, through modulatory effects of amplitude correlation. Our study establishes the foundations of a novel conceptual framework for human brain function that fundamentally relies on electrophysiological features of functional integration.
