In 2019, Colin Campbell's two teenage children, Ruby and Hart, were killed by a drunk driver. In the thick of this tragedy, Colin turned to the many books on grief that line shelves but ultimately realized they were unhelpful and failed to provide the insight he desperately sought. Channeling his grief, he wrote his new book (out March 14th) FINDING THE WORDS and a solo performance piece titled Grief: A One Man Shit-Show In LA (March 17-19) and NYC (March 29-April 16). You can find that info here. In FINDING THE WORDS (3/14/23; Hardcover; TarcherPerigee), Colin offers practical advice on how to survive in the aftermath of loss. By actively reaching out to their community, performing mourning rituals, and finding ways to express their grief, readers will learn how to live more fully while still holding their loved ones close. Campbell shines a light on a path forward through the darkness of grief. While processing his own grief, Colin realized that much of the common wisdom about coping with loss was unhelpful—that it is a private and mysteriousprocess and that the pain is so great that there “are no words.”While detailing his beautiful and personal account, Campbell also provides practical and actionable methods he and his wife took to navigate their profound grief. Inside, you can expect both a series of journaling prompts as well as concrete action plans to practice active grieving. Unlike in other books about grief, Campbell articulates certain truths such as the act of leaning into the pain, becoming an active protagonist in our journey through grief, and more. What a CreepSeason 16, Episode 5The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory FireMarch 25, 1911One of the biggest workplace disasters in New York City happened on March 25, 1911, in a factory on the Lower East Side which would be described as a “sweatshop.” Hundreds of women jammed together in one large room at sewing machines creating the fashionable “Shirtwaist” blouses that were made on the cheap to make them affordable to the masses. The fire began on the 8th floor and eventually took over several floors in the building with doors locked, no sprinkler system in place, and fire ladders that could not reach higher than the 6th floor—146 people died, most of the women and young girls. The youngest victims were two girls--14 years old.The deaths of these people led to some of the most important worker's rights legislation in the history of the U.S. (things we are still arguing about over 100 years later.)Trigger warnings: Death by fire, death at the workplaceSources:History.comHistory.com videoTriangle Fire MemorialAFLCIOBritannicaNew York Public Library1979 TV Movie: The Triangle Factory ScandalCBS NewsSmithsonianThe 1911 Triangle Fire Cornell UniversityUS Department of LaborTriangle: The Fire That Changed America by David Von DrehleHBO: Triangle, Remembering the FirePBS American Experience Triangle FireBe sure to follow us on social media. Today's guest is Hannah Kahn, founder and artistic director of the Hannah Kahn Dance Company. Hannah is a master teacher with fifty-two years of experience creating over one hundred and forty dances. Some of the strongest influences on her choreography were her childhood classes in Ithaca, New York with Iris Barbura, her studies of the techniques of Jose Limon and Martha Graham, and her performance of dances by Doris Humphrey and Anna Sokolow. The practice of Tai Chi has also influenced her movement style. After graduating from the Juilliard School in 1972, Kahn founded the Company in New York, and directed it there for twelve years before moving to Colorado in 1988, where she has directed the company ever since. In addition to her own company, her works have been in the repertories of over a dozen other dance companies. I'm so fortunate to have one of my favourite UK musicians on the show, Mr Alexis Taylor. A founding member of the now legendary Hot Chip, he's been releasing music for good whee while now and by gosh it's all superb. His clothing choices are also second to none. The man marches to the beat of his own drum machine. I REALLY hope you're not aware of Alexis thus far so you get to experience the joy of opening up his catalog as it were the first snow you'd ever seen on your lawn. The majesty!!! Hello Alexis! GIG ALERT Alexis has got a seriously cool show coming up very soon in NYC March 15th and 16th https://www.metmuseum.org/events/programs/met-live-arts/alexis-taylor-19 Needless to say, this is a MUST for any New Yorkers. He's playing together with the amazing Money Mark, my super talented friend Jonny Lam, Annie Hart and visual master Nick Relph at the Met! Bloody hell. EPIC! Today's Nitty is a levels game. I ask the potentially expensive question “does a DI/mic pre combo make eurorack belt harder?” Find out! Music for this episode comes courtesy of Rory Simmons https://www.rorysimmons.com https://rorysimmons.bandcamp.com soundcloud.com/rory_simmons He's a superb player and has already worked with a massively talent bunch of people like Jamie Cullum, The 1975, Bonobo, Mount Kimbie, Bat for lashes and many more! SWEET Sponsors of todays show are the wonderous https://www.spitfireaudio.com Makers of some of the finest sample libraries in the known universe. Just unreal and yet so so real!! How you doing?
Hugh Slatter has a story that you may not have heard before, but we feel you need to. That's why he's our feature guest here on Episode 338. Serving in Zimbabwe's Air Force and earning the rank of Air Vice Marshal, Slatter saw the tyrannical governments in Africa in a light that few ever have, and none would ever wish to. He details his story of imprisonment and torture with us, and eventually his move to the U.S. Slatter's book discusses all of this at length, and all proceeds for the memoir go toward veteran causes. It's called "Pilot, Prisoner, Patriot: One Man's Triumph over Torture & Tragedy" available exclusively on HughSlatter.com, and you can get it signed there as well. Jack Murphy also recaps going to the NYC March for Our Lives, and interviewing attendees for a future short documentary airing on The Spec Ops Channel. ...I admit that I realized after we recorded, that we also should have gotten into the appointment of John Bolton to National Security Advisor! I will make note that we need to hit that next time. We also read your emails sent to sofrep.radio@sofrep.com. Paul Schneider lives in Dallas, Texas and is 31 years old. First exposed to ceramics in high school (St. Mark's), attended Rhodes College - played baseball, majored in International Studies. No ceramics program at Rhodes, tried unsuccessfully to start one. One semester I got access to nearby Memphis College of Art to continue throwing. Spent a semester in Madrid - took a ceramics class there - that would be considered my only 'formal' education in ceramics. I've been working full-time on ceramics (my business) for the past six years. It's been a roller coaster. Went to a trade show in NYC -March 2014 - Architectural Digest Home Design Show - got a lot of great press there - AD wrote a profile piece on my work. Currently focus is on table lamps.
In perhaps his most prolific period, John Coltrane was documented several times at his probing best in 1965. The master saxophonist recorded no less than ten albums’ worth of material in that year alone. In this special edition of JazzWatch, Greg spotlights rare Coltrane Quartet performances from The Half Note in NYC (March 19, 1965) and at Seattle, Washington’s Penthouse […]

Her book published by Beaufort Books is entitled Thou Shalt Not Whine…..The Eleventh Commandment and reached a #1 ranking at amazon.com. Ms. Jones specializes in homemaker humor in the tradition of Erma Bombeck. She is also the author of Jackie Ari and Jack: The Tragic Love Triangle and two other Kennedy books. “What makes January such an expert on whining?” She is a golfer, a woman, a wife, a mother with four kids and grandmother of seven. Also, January was a widow at 25 years with two small children so she knows a little about whining and a lot about winning. http://www.januaryjones.coM Regina Rowely began taking Tae-kwon-do years ago with my son. Although he discontinued, I found the demanding mental and physical exercise highly beneficial and continued. Spring 2008 afforded me the opportunity to achieve my Black Belt. While researching self defense programs I came across several including Hikuta and have high regards for it. Krav Maga, the official self-defense and fighting system of the Israeli Defense Forces is the foundation for Commando Krav Maga. Smartsafe, aka: Women's Commando Krav Maga, is the program I have chosen to teach, receiving my first certification in NYC March 2010. It is my dream to change the violent statistics against women. I move closer to this each time I teach and speak. I love to speak to women's groups on Awareness, Prevention, Empowerment, and Women's Self Defense. Together, we will make a positive difference in the lives of women every where; one woman at a time. http://www.reginarowley.com
