L'Istat stima che il Pil italiano si appresti a chiudere il 2024 con un progresso dello 0,5%, la metà rispetto alla previsione del governo su cui è stata costruita la legge di bilancio, c'è da dire però che anche Istat aveva previsto a giugno una crescita del +1%. Il dato Istat si allinea a quello diffuso ieri dall'Ocse. Per il 2025 è invece atteso un progresso dello 0,8%, inferiore dello 0,4% rispetto a quanto indicato dal governo Meloni.Secondo l'Istat, l'economia italiana risente nel 2024 della debolezza della domanda interna, in particolare dal lato dell'offerta. La dinamica calante della produzione industriale, alimentata dalla debolezza della economia tedesca, principale mercato di sbocco delle nostre esportazioni e dalla crisi di alcuni comparti produttivi (automotive su tutti), spiega l'Istituto, ha inciso negativamente sugli investimenti fissi lordi e sulle importazioni.Per il 2025, pur permanendo le incertezze di natura geopolitica e i rischi legati a pressioni protezionistiche, si sconta invece una stabilizzazione della domanda mondiale e un leggero rafforzamento del commercio internazionale. This is Nelson John, let's get started.There's been a significant selloff by foreign portfolio investors over the past two months. But what drove this selloff? According to fund managers and securities lawyers Ram Sahgal spoke to, it wasn't just due to shaky corporate earnings or rising US bond yields. It was triggered by a new rule that Sebi introduced in August 2023 and tightened by March 2024. The rule mandates detailed ownership disclosures from FPIs with substantial Indian holdings. Rather than comply, many FPIs chose to exit, leading to increased selloffs, especially around the MSCI Emerging Markets Index rebalancing in November. IIT campus placements are getting a twist this year! Companies aren't just asking the usual tech questions – they're really shaking things up with some wildcard queries. Imagine being asked to design an airport right in the heart of Bangalore or explain the strategy behind cricket team formations. It's not just about checking if students can code or crunch numbers—it's about seeing how they handle curveballs. Sowmya Ramasubramaniam, Pratishtha Bagai and Devina Sengupta spoke to recruiters who said that these offbeat questions are key to gauging a candidate's creativity and adaptability. This new interview style is aimed at finding candidates who aren't just smart but also quick on their feet and ready to jump into the fray with fresh ideas. Indian farmers may have a tough rabi season ahead, thanks to China. Dhirendra Kumar writes that China's restrictions on key fertiliser exports to India have reduced the availability of a crucial nutrient for crops. – di-ammonium phosphate, or DAP. Domestic DAP production dropped by 7.3% in April-October, while imports fell by 29.8% over the same period. Dhirendra writes that the government has told farmers there is no shortage of fertilisers, but fertiliser companies say otherwise. 20% of India's DAP needs are imported from China, leading to this problem. Blackstone used to buy real estate projects and turn them around. That strategy made it the largest owner of office space in India in quick time. After entering India in 2007, inorganic growth was the mantra for the New York-based company, but it's now moving to greenfield projects, Madhurima Nandy writes. It recently ventured into logistics by building a 52-acre park in Chakan, Maharashtra. Blackstone hopes to capitalise on the growing demand for modern warehouses that is driven by the e-commerce boom. Despite broader economic numbers painting India in a poor light, investors such as Blackstone like India's chances, and are willing to spend like they mean it. Pat Gelsinger's unexpected departure from Intel just might leave the chip giant scrambling to find solid ground in a market that's evolving rapidly thanks to advances in AI, and competitors such as Nvidia and AMD are already way ahead. Once a global powerhouse, Intel is now fighting to reclaim its past glory. So, why did Gelsinger leave? Leslie D'Monte answers that question in today's Primer. Initially hailed as Intel's rescuer when he took over in 2021, Gelsinger left after Intel posted a hefty $16.6 billion quarterly loss, the largest in its history, which apparently shook the board's confidence in his leadership.

Intel und seinen Vorläufern verdankt das Silicon Valley seinen Namen. Ausgerechnet in einem Boom-Markt für Computerchips, der Unternehmen wie Nvidia reich gemacht hat, steckt die Halbleiterikone in einer tiefen Krise. 15.000 Mitarbeiter muss der Konzern entlassen – also rund fünfzehn Prozent seiner Belegschaft. Außerdem will Intel bis Ende nächsten Jahres weitere zehn Milliarden Dollar einsparen und alle Projekte auf den Prüfstand stellen. Betrifft das auch die zwei geplanten Intel-Fabriken in Magdeburg? Was sind die Gründe für Intels Probleme, wie will das Unternehmen dort wieder herauskommen und wie stark ist der Posten von Konzernchef Pat Gelsinger gefährdet? Darüber sprechen in dieser Folge des Valley Talks der Berkeley-Wirtschaftsprofessor Olaf Groth und die Journalisten Marcus Schuler und Matthias Hohensee. "Intel non è giunta in Italia, ne prendiamo atto. Per altro, se leggete, Intel ha dei problemi, è l'unica azienda internazionale di semiconduttori che ha problemi" e "le cui azioni hanno perso valore in Borsa". Lo ha dichiarato il ministro delle Imprese e del made in Italy, Adolfo Urso, al Phygital Sustainability Expo. "Nel frattempo sono giunti investimenti pari già a oltre 8 miliardi di euro sulla microelettronica. Silicon box, St microelectronics, un'altra impresa francese, un'altra impresa tedesca ieri. In totole abbiamo già superato 8 miliardi di euro di investimenti e a fine anno arriveremo a 10 miliardi". L'Intel lo scorso anno aveva fatto sapere che avrebbe messo a terra investimenti sulla catena dei semiconduttori pari a 80 miliardi di euro. Del totale, oltre 33 miliardi saranno dedicati alla costruzione di nuovi impianti nel territorio europeo. Per l'Italia sembrava concreta l'ipotesi di ospitare il primo impianto continentale di back-end per la fabbricazione di chip, per cui l'investimento previsto ruotava intorno ai 4,5 miliardi e che avrebbe generato 1.500 nuovi posti di lavoro e altri 3500 nell'indotto, probabilmente nel nord Italia. Intanto, come scrive oggi Biagio Simonetta sul Sole, Pat Gelsinger, ceo di Intel, ha un compito assolutamente difficile: convincere il mercato che il futuro della sua società non sia stato compromesso da alcune scelte di dubbio valore e dal boom dei competitor come Nvidia. E ci ha provato anche ieri, durante Computex, la fiera tecnologica in corso a Tapei (Taiwan), dove i più importanti produttori di chip al mondo si stanno sfidando a colpi di innovazione. Gelsinger sa che da inizio anno Intel ha perso il 40% del suo valore a Wall Street. Un dato significativo, soprattutto se inserito in un contesto - quello delle società dei semiconduttori - di grande crescita. Nello stesso lasso di tempo, il titolo di Nvidia ha guadagnato il 132%; quello di Arm il 65%; quello di Qualcomm il 40%; quello di AMD il 10%; quello di TSMC il 58%. Intel, che dell'industria dei semiconduttori è una delle società più importanti e longeve, non solo non segue la scia dei competitor, ma addirittura crolla. Dal palco del Computex, Gelsinger ha risposto al ceo di Nvidia: «A differenza di quanto Jensen vorrebbe far credere, la legge di Moore è viva e vegeta» sottolineando che Intel avrà un ruolo importante nella proliferazione dell AI in quanto principale fornitore di chip per PC.«Penso che sia come Internet 25 anni fa, è così grande. Lo vediamo come il carburante che spinge l industria dei semiconduttori a raggiungere 1.000 miliardi di dollari entro la fine del decennio». Intel ha presentato i suoi nuovi processori, e al pari dei rivali, da AMD a Qualcomm, ha fornito dei benchmark che hanno dimostrato che il suo nuovo silicio è significativamente migliore rispetto alle opzioni esistenti. Il problema più immediato, però, è arrivato dal mercato, dove la risposta è stata tutt'altro che calorosa. Le azioni di Intel hanno galleggiato attorno allo stesso valore di chiusura di lunedì. E questo nonostante i nuovi prodotti e le parole del ceo che sono sembrate un guanto di sfida a Nvidia. Intel ha guidato l industria dei computer per decenni, ma negli ultimi due anni i suoi ricavi sono diminuiti a causa del ritardo rispetto ai rivali sui processori per l AI. Una storia che ricorda un po la scelta (una quindicina d'anni fa) fatta per i chip dedicati al mobile. In quell'occasione Intel si fece soffiare il mercato da Qualcomm. In Italia "si fanno battaglie ideologiche, ma ci si dimentica che sopra le nostre teste ci sono 130 centrali nucleari, dal Piemonte al Friuli. Ci vuole più pragmatismo e fiducia nell'innovazione", ha aggiunto Spada ricordando che "non bisogna abbandonare il gas, ma cercare di renderlo sempre più pulito. E puntare sul nucleare". Spada ha ricordato che "oggi in Spagna il costo dell'energia è di 13,67 euro per megawattora, mentre in Italia 86,6 euro". Sul tema è tornato oggi anche il neo presidente di Confindustria Emanuele Orsini, partecipando a un evento de Il Giornale: "L'Industria 5.0 deve essere messa a terra velocemente, per dar la possibilità da luglio di avere i consulenti che possono aiutare le imprese a farlo. La seconda cosa è cominciare alla sperimentazione del nucleare in Italia". Lo ha detto stamni a Verona il presidente di Confindustria. "Oggi - ha proseguito Orsini - si fa lo studio in Italia e le sperimentazioni in Francia. Dobbiamo mettere in condizioni l'Isi di potere dare sostegno alle nostre imprese di far sperimentazione. Quindi mettere a terra subito la parte nucleare perché saremo pronti nel 2031". Il presidente di Confidustria ha poi aggiuntoi come "sappiamo quanto la politica antindustriale sia stata al centro della Commissione uscente, per noi la Commissione entrante e il nuovo Parlamento europeo dovranno mettere al centro l'industria e le imprese, perché altrimenti non rimettiamo al centro la produttività e i consumi". "L'Europa - ha ricordato Orsini - rappresenta il 15% del Pil mondiale, e vale il 7% dell'inquinamento. Io dico attenzione: la decarbonizzazione complessiva vale 1.100 miliardi, noi dobbiamo prenderci i tempi giusti per poterla fare. He's a good storyteller, and as you know from probably from reading it or maybe talking to others about it, he wrote a page turner. He actually really dug into the science and all the different aspects of it that I think created a great tale.Eric Topol (01:07):Yeah, I recommended highly. It was my favorite book when it came out a couple years ago, and it is a page turner. In fact, I just want to read one, there's so many quotes out of it, but in the early part of the book, he says, “the invention of CRISPR and the plague of Covid will hasten our transition to the third great revolution of modern times. These revolutions arose from the discovery beginning just over a century ago, of the three fundamental kernels of our existence, the atom, the bit, and the gene.” That kind of tells a big story just in one sentence, but I thought I'd start with the IGI, the institute that you have set up at Berkeley and what its overall goals are.Jennifer Doudna (01:58):Right. Well, let's just go back a few years maybe to the origins of this institute and my thinking around it, because in the early days of CRISPR, it was clear that we were really at a moment that was quite unique in the sense that there was a transformative technology. It was going to intersect with lots of other discoveries and technologies. And I work at a public institution and my question to myself was, how can I make sure that this powerful tool is first of all used responsibly and secondly, that it's used in a way that benefits as many people as possible, and it's a tall order, but clearly we needed to have some kind of a structure that would allow people to work together towards those goals. And that was really the mission behind the IGI, which was started as a partnership between UC Berkeley and UCSF and now actually includes UC Davis as well.The First FDA Approved Genome EditingEric Topol (02:57):I didn't realize that. That's terrific. Well, this is a pretty big time because 10 years or so, I guess starting to be 11 when you got this thing going, now we're starting to see, well, hundreds of patients have been treated and in December the FDA approved the first CRISPR therapy for sickle cell disease, Casgevy. Is that the way you say it?Jennifer Doudna (03:23):Casgevy, yeah.Eric Topol (03:24):That must have felt pretty good to see if you go from the molecules to the bench all the way now to actually treating diseases and getting approval, which is no easy task.Jennifer Doudna (03:39):Well, Eric, for me, I'm a biochemist and somebody who has always worked on the fundamentals of biology, and so it's really been extraordinary to see the pace at which the CRISPR technology has been adopted, and not just for fundamental research, but also for real applications. And Casgevy is sort of the crowning example of that so far, is that it's really a technology that we can already see how it's being used to, I think it's fair to say, effectively cure a genetic disease for the first time. Really amazing.Genome Editing is Not the Same as Gene TherapyEric Topol (04:17):Yeah. Now I want to get back to that. I know there's going to be refinements about that. And of course, there's beta thalassemia, so we've got two already, and our mutual friend Fyodor Urnov would say two down 5,000 to go. But I think before I get to the actual repair of the sickle cell defect molecular defect, I think one of the questions I think that people listeners may not know is the differentiation of genome editing with gene therapy. I mean, as you know, there was recently a gene therapy approval for something like $4.25 million for metachromatic leukodystrophy. So maybe you could give us kind of skinny on how these two fundamental therapies are different.Jennifer Doudna (05:07):Right. Well, it's a great question because the terminology sounds kind of the same, and so it could be confusing. Gene therapy goes back decades, I can remember gene therapy being discussed as an exciting new at the time, direction back when I was a graduate student. That was little while ago. And it refers to the idea that we can use a genetic approach for disease treatment or even for a cure. However, it fundamentally requires some mechanism of integrating new information into a genome. And traditionally that's been done using viruses, which are great at doing that. It's just that they do it wherever they want to do it, not necessarily where we want that information to go. And this is where CRISPR comes in. It's a technology allows precision in that kind of genetic manipulation. So it allows the scientist or the clinician to decide where to make a genetic change. And that gives us tremendous opportunity to do things with a kind of accuracy that hasn't been possible before.Eric Topol (06:12):Yeah, no question. That's just a footnote. My thesis in college at University of Virginia, 1975, I'm an old dog, was prospects for gene therapy in man. So it took a while, didn't it? But it's a lot better now with what you've been working on, you and your colleagues now and for the last decade for sure. Now, what I was really surprised about is it's not just of course, these hemoglobin disorders, but now already in phase two trials, you've got hereditary angioedema, which is a life-threatening condition, amyloidosis, cancer ex vivo, and also chronic urinary tract infections. And of course, there's six more others like autoimmune diseases like lupus and type 1 diabetes. So this is really blossoming. It's really extraordinary.Eric Topol (07:11):I mean, wow. So one of the questions I had about phages, because this is kind of going back to this original work and discovery, antimicrobial resistance is really a big problem and it's a global health crisis, and there's only two routes there coming up with new drugs, which has been slow and not really supported by the life science industry. And the other promising area is with phages. And I wonder, since this is an area you know so well, why haven't we put more, we're starting to see more trials in phages. Why haven't we doubled down or tripled down on this to help the antimicrobial resistance problem?Jennifer Doudna (08:00):Well, it's a really interesting area, and as you said, it's kind of one of those areas of science where I think there was interest a while ago and some effort was made for reasons that are not entirely clear to me, at least it fizzled out as a real focused field for a long time. But then more recently, people have realized that there's an opportunity here to take advantage of some natural biology in which viruses can infect and destroy microbes. Why aren't we taking better advantage of that for our own health purposes? So I personally am very excited about this area. I think there's a lot of fundamental work still to be done, but I think there's a tremendous opportunity there as well.CRISPR 2.0Eric Topol (08:48):Yeah, I sure think we need to invest in that. Now, getting back to this sickle cell story, which is so extraordinary. This is kind of a workaround plan of getting fetal hemoglobin built up, but what about actually repairing, getting to fixing the lesion, if you will?Eric Topol (09:11):Yeah. Is that needed?Jennifer Doudna (09:13):Well, maybe it's worth saying a little bit about how Casgevy works, and you alluded to this. It's not a direct cure. It's a mechanism that allows activation of a second protein called fetal hemoglobin that can suppress the effect of the sickle cell mutation. And it's great, and I think for patients, it offers a really interesting opportunity with their disease that hasn't been available in the past, but at the same time, it's not a true cure. And so the question is could we use a CRISPR type technology to actually make a correction to the genetic defect that directly causes the disease? And I think the answer is yes. The field isn't there quite yet. It's still relatively difficult to control the exact way that DNA editing is occurring, especially if we're doing it in vivo in the body. But boy, many people are working on this, as you probably know. And I really think that's on the horizon.Eric Topol (10:19):Yeah. Well, I think we want to get into the in vivo story as well because that, I think right now it's so complicated for a person to have to go through the procedure to get ultimately this treatment currently for sickle cell, whereas if you could do this in vivo and you could actually get the cure, that would be of the objective. Now, you published just earlier this month in PNAS a wonderful paper about the EDVs and the lipid nanoparticles that are ways that we could get to a better precision editing. These EDVs I guess if I have it right, enveloped virus-like particles. It could be different types, it could be extracellular vesicles or whatnot. But do you think that's going to be important? Because right now we're limited for delivery, we're limited to achieve the right kind of editing to do this highly precise. Is that a big step for the future?Jennifer Doudna (11:27):Really big. I think that's gating at the moment. Right now, as you mentioned, somebody that might want to get the drug Casgevy for sickle cell disease or thalassemia, they have to go through a bone marrow transplant to get it. And that means that it's very expensive. It's time consuming. It's obviously not pleasant to have to go through that. And so that automatically means that right now that therapy is quite restricted in the patients that it can benefit. But we imagine a day when you could get this type of therapy into the body with a one-time injection. Maybe someday it's a pill that could be taken where the gene editors target the right cells in the body. In diseases like that, it would be the stem cells in the bone marrow and carry out gene editing that can have a therapeutic benefit. And again, it's one of those ideas that sounds like science fiction, and yet already there's tremendous advance in that direction. And I think over the next, I don't know, I'm guessing 5 to 10 years we're going to see that coming online.Editing RNA, the Epigenome, and the MicrobiomeEric Topol (12:35):Yeah, I'm guessing just because there's so much work on the lipid nanoparticles to tweak them. And there's four different components that could easily be made so much better. And then all these virus-like proteins, I mean, it may happen even sooner. And it's really exciting. And I love that diagram in that paper. You have basically every organ of the body that isn't accessible now, potentially that would become accessible. And that's exciting because whatever blossoming we're seeing right now with these phase two trials ongoing, then you basically have no limits. And that I think is really important. So in vivo editing big. Now, the other thing that's cropped up in recent times is we've just been focused on DNA, but now there's RNA editing, there's epigenetic or epigenomic editing. What are your thoughts about that?Jennifer Doudna (13:26):Very exciting as well. It's kind of a parallel strategy. The idea there would be to, rather than making a permanent change in the DNA of a cell, you could change just the genetic output of the cell and or even make a change to DNA that would alter its ability to be expressed and to produce proteins in the cell. So these are strategies that are accessible, again, using CRISPR tools. And the question is now how to use them in ways that will be therapeutically beneficial. Again, topics that are under very active investigation in both academic labs and at companies.Eric Topol (14:13):Yeah. Now speaking of that, this whole idea of rejuvenation, this is Altos. You may I'm sure know my friend here, Juan Carlos Belmonte, who's been pushing on this for some time at Altos now formerly at Salk. And I know you helped advise Altos, but this idea of basically epigenetic, well using the four Yamanaka factors and basically getting cells that go to a state that are rejuvenated and all these animal models that show that it really happens, are you thinking that really could become a therapy in the times ahead in patients for aging or particular ideas that you have of how to use that?Jennifer Doudna (15:02):Well, you mentioned the company Altos. I mean, Altos and a number of other groups are actively investigating this. Not I would say specifically regarding genome editing, although being able to monitor and probably change gene functions that might affect the aging process could be attractive in the future. I think the hard question there is which genes do we tweak and how do we make sure that it's safe? And better than me I mean, that's a very difficult thing to study clinically because it takes time for one thing, and we probably don't have the best models either. So I think there are challenges there for sure. But along the way, I feel very excited about the kind of fundamental knowledge that will come from those studies. And in particular, this question of how tissues rejuvenate I think is absolutely fascinating. And some organisms do this better than others. And so, understanding how that works in organisms that are able to say regrow a limb, I think can be very interesting.Eric Topol (16:10):And that gets me to that recent study. Well, as you well know, there's a company Verve that's working on the familial hypercholesterolemia and using editing with the PCSK9 through the liver and having some initial, at least a dozen patients have been treated. But then this epigenetic study of editing in mice for PCSK9 also showed results. Of course, that's much further behind actually treating patients with base editing. But it's really intriguing that you can do some of these things without having to go through DNA isn't it?Jennifer Doudna (16:51):Amazing, right? Yeah, it's very interesting.Reducing the Cost of Genome EditingEric Topol (16:54):Wild. Now, one of the things of course that people bring up is, well, this is so darn expensive and it's great. It's a science triumph, but then who can get these treatments? And recently in January, you announced a Danaher-IGI Beacon, and maybe you can tell us a bit about that, because again, here's a chance to really markedly reduce the cost, right?Jennifer Doudna (17:25):That's right. That's the vision there. And huge kudos to my colleague Fyodor Urnov, who really spearheaded that effort and leads the team on the IGI side. But the vision there was to partner with a company that has the ability to manufacture molecules in ways that are very, very hard, of course, for academic labs and even for most companies to do. And so the idea was to bring together the best of genome editing technology, the best of clinical medicine, especially focused on rare human diseases. And this is with our partners at UCSF and with the folks in the Danaher team who are experts at downstream issues of manufacturing. And so the hope there is that we can bring those pieces together to create ways of using CRISPR that will be cost effective for patients. And frankly, we'll also create a kind of roadmap for how to do this, how to do this more efficiently. And we're kind of building the plane while we're flying it, if you know what I mean. But we're trying to really work creatively with organizations like the FDA to come up with strategies for clinical trials that will maintain safety, but also speed up the timeline.Eric Topol (18:44):And I think it's really exciting. We need that and I'm on the scientific advisory board of Danaher, a new commitment for me. And when Fyodor presented that recently, I said, wow, this is exciting. We haven't really had a path to how to get these therapies down to a much lower cost. Now, another thing that's exciting that you're involved in, which I think crosses the whole genome editing, the two most important things that I've seen in my lifetime are genome editing and AI, and they also work together. So maybe before we get into AI for drug discovery, how does AI come into play when you're thinking about doing genome editing?Jennifer Doudna (19:34):Well, the thing about CRISPR is that as a tool, it's powerful not only as a one and done kind of an approach, but it's also very powerful genomically, meaning that you can make large libraries of these guide RNAs that allow interrogation of many genes at once. And so that's great on the one hand, but it's also daunting because it generates large collections of data that are difficult to manually inspect. And in some cases, I believe really very, very difficult to analyze in traditional ways. But imagine that we have ways of training models that can look at genetic intersections, ways that genes might be affecting the behavior of not only other genes, but also how a person responds to drugs, how a person responds to their environment and allows us to make predictions about genetic outcomes based on that information. I think that's extremely exciting, and I definitely think that over the next few years we'll see that kind of analysis coming online more and more.Eric Topol (20:45):Yeah, the convergence, I think is going to be, it's already being done now, but it's just going to keep building. Now, Demis Hassabis, who one of the brilliant people in the field of AI leads the whole Google Deep Mind AI efforts now, but he formed after AlphaFold2 behaving to predict proteins, 200 million proteins of the universe. He started a company Isomorphic Labs as a way to accelerate using AI drug discovery. What can you tell us about that?Jennifer Doudna (21:23):It's exciting, isn't it? I'm on the SAB for that company, and I think it's very interesting to see their approach to drug discovery. It's different from what I've been familiar with at other companies because they're really taking a computational lens to this challenge. The idea there is can we actually predict things like the way a small molecule might interact with a particular protein or even how it might interact with a large protein complex. And increasingly because of AlphaFold and programs like that, that allow accurate prediction of structures, it's possible to do that kind of work extremely quickly. A lot of it can be done in silico rather than in the laboratory. And when you do get around to doing experiments in the lab, you can get away with many fewer experiments because you know the right ones to do. Now, will this actually accelerate the rate at which we get to approved therapeutics? I wonder about your opinion about that. I remain unsure.Editing Out Alzheimer's Risk AllelesEric Topol (22:32):Yeah. I mean, we have one great success story so far during the pandemic Baricitinib, a drug that repurposed here, a drug that was for rheumatoid arthritis, found by data mining that have a high prospects for Covid and now saves lives in Covid. So at least that's one down, but we got a lot more here too. But it, it's great that Demis recruited you on the SAB for Isomorphic because it brings in a great mind in a different field. And it goes back to one of the things you mentioned earlier is how can we get some of this genome editing into a pill someday? Wow. Now, one of the things that for personal interest, as an APOE4 carrier, I'm looking to you to fix my APOE4 and give me APOE2. How can I expect to get that done in the near future?Jennifer Doudna (23:30):Oh boy. Okay, we'll have to roll up our sleeves on that one. But it is appealing, isn't it? I think about it too. It's a fascinating idea. Could we get to a point someday where we can use genome editing as a prophylactic, not as a treatment after the fact, but as a way to actually protect ourselves from disease? And the APOE4 example is a really interesting one because there's really good evidence that by changing the type of allele that one has for the APOE gene, you can actually affect a person's likelihood of developing Alzheimer's in later life. But how do we get there? I think one thing to point out is that right now doing genome editing in the brain is, well, it's hard. I mean, it's very hard.Eric Topol (24:18):It a little bit's been done in cerebral spinal fluid to show that you can get the APOE2 switch. But I don't know that I want to sign up for an LP to have that done.Jennifer Doudna (24:30):Not quite yet.Eric Topol (24:31):But someday it's wild. It's totally wild. And that actually gets me back to that program for coronary heart disease and heart attacks, because when you're treating people with familial hypercholesterolemia, this extreme phenotype. Someday and this goes for many of these rare diseases that you and others are working on, it can have much broader applicability if you have a one-off treatment to prevent coronary disease and heart attacks and you might use that for people well beyond those who have an LDL cholesterol that are in the thousands. So that's what I think a lot of people don't realize that this editing potential isn't just for these monogenic and rare diseases. So we just wanted to emphasize that. Well, this has been a kind of wild ride through so much going on in this field. I mean, it is extraordinary. What am I missing that you're excited about?Jennifer Doudna (25:32):Well, we didn't talk about the microbiome. I'll just very briefly mention that one of our latest initiatives at the IGI is editing the microbiome. And you probably know there are more and more connections that are being made between our microbiome and all kinds of health and disease states. So we think that being able to manipulate the microbiome precisely is going to open up another whole opportunity to impact our health.Can Editing Slow the Aging Process?Eric Topol (26:03):Yeah, I should have realized that when I only mentioned two layers of biology, there's another one that's active. Extraordinary, just going back to aging for a second today, there was a really interesting paper from Irv Weissman Stanford, who I'm sure you know and colleagues, where they basically depleted the myeloid stem cells in aged mice. And they rejuvenated the immune system. I mean, it really brought it back to life as a young malice. Now, there probably are ways to do that with editing without having to deplete stem cells. And the thought about other ways to approach the aging process now that we're learning so much about science and about the immune system, which is one of the most complex ones to work in. Do you have ideas about that are already out there that we could influence the aging process, especially for those of us who are getting old?Jennifer Doudna (27:07):We're all on that path, Eric. Well, I guess the way that I think about it is I like to think that genome editing is going to pave the way to make those kinds of fundamental discoveries. I still feel that there's a lot of our genetics that we don't understand. And so, by being able to manipulate genes precisely and increasingly to look at how genes interact with each other, I think one fundamental question it relates to aging actually is why do some of us age at a seemingly faster pace than others? And it must have to do at least in part with our genetic makeup and how we respond to our environment. So I definitely think there are big opportunities there, really in fundamental research initially, but maybe later to actually change those kinds of things.Eric Topol (28:03):Yeah, I'm very impressed in recent times how much the advances are being made at basic science level and experimental models. A lot of promise there. Now, is there anything about this field that you worry about that keeps you up at night that you think, besides, we talked about that we got to get the cost down, we have to bridge health inequities for sure, but is there anything else that you're concerned about right now?Jennifer Doudna (28:33):Well, I think anytime a new technology goes into clinical trials, you worry that things may get out ahead of their skis, and there may be some overreach that happens. I think we haven't really seen that so far in the CRISPR field, which is great. But I guess I remain cautious. I think that we all saw what happened in the field of gene therapy now decades ago, but that really put a poll on that field for a long time. And so, I definitely think that we need to continue to be very cautious as gene editing continues to advance.Eric Topol (29:10):Yeah, no question. I think the momentum now is getting past that point where you would be concerned about known unknowns, if you will, things that going back to the days of the Gelsinger crisis. But it's really extraordinary. I am so thrilled to have this conversation with you and to get a chance to review where the field is and where it's going. I mean, it's exploding with promise and potential well beyond and faster. I mean, it takes a drug 17 years, and you've already gotten this into two treatments. I mean, I'm struck when you were working on this, how you could have thought that within a 10-year time span you'd already have FDA approvals. It's extraordinary.Jennifer Doudna (30:09):Yeah, we hardly dared hope. Of course, we're all thrilled that it went that fast, but I think it would've been hard to imagine it at the time.Eric Topol (30:17):Yeah. Well, when that gets simplified and doesn't require hospitalizations and bone marrow, and then you'll know you're off to the races. But look, what a great start. Phenomenal. So congratulations. I'm so thrilled to have the chance to have this conversation. And obviously we're all going to be following your work because what a beacon of science and progress and changing medicine. So thanks and give my best to my friend there at IGI, Fyodor, who's a character. He's a real character. I love the guy, and he's a good friend.Jennifer Doudna (30:55):I certainly will Eric, and thank you so much. During the earnings call on Thursday, January 25, 2024, Intel Corporation outlined the company's current state, future prospects, and significant challenges. The CEO, Patrick P. Gelsinger, addressed various facets during the conversation but refrained from commenting on any specific sector shifts or changes in consumer behavior that could be impacting the company's operations. They reported an uptick in customers looking to outsource manufacturing, creating a potential growth catalyst with their Intel Foundry Services business. However, while the overall conference tended towards a positive outlook for Intel's future, it's worth noting that the forecasts are dependent on overcoming persistent supply chain challenges and successfully capitalizing on market opportunities. The company projects an annual revenue growth that continues in the double digits and expanding operating margins. Maintaining this level of performance will require diligent management and an aptitude for navigating industry changes. In conclusion, the Intel Corporation has indicated a commitment to adapting to and navigating through a tough industry climate, driving growth, and generating value for stakeholders by leveraging opportunities in semiconductor megatrends. It will be interesting to see how this strategy unfolds against the backdrop of ongoing supply chain challenges and market risks. As the outcome is dependent on multifaceted industry factors, the path ahead for Intel, though optimistic, maintains an element of unpredictability. We were recently invited to speak at the University of Connecticut's Annual Medieval Studies/ECE Outreach Seminar on a variety of subjects related to the Viking Age. We prepared and recorded our morning presentation on Slavery in the Viking Age as a Saga Brief so that everyone in our listening audience could enjoy. It's a subject Andy's been thinking about a lot as we've been working our way through Laxdaela Saga, which is why he took the lead on this topic. Later in the day, John presented on Viking Age board games, focusing on Nine Men's Morris and Hneftafl. We then led a conversation on the Saga of Ragnar Lothbrok and his Sons among other topics. Pat has a master's degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from Stanford, a bachelor's in Electrical Engineering from Santa Clara University, and an associate's degree in electronics from Lincoln Technical Institute. Pat has received a number of awards and honors. Just to name a couple, he was named a Fellow of the IEEE in 2008, and that same year awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from William Jessup University. At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland last month, Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger made a prediction about how the world will vie for resources in the coming decades. For years, Gelsinger said, much of geopolitical relations have turned on access to oil reserves. But in the future, he thinks a more important factor will be where microchips are made. Intel is a prominent figure in the computer chip business, but some 90 per cent of the world's most advanced chips are currently made by one company in Taiwan. And according to Chris Miller, if the TSMC plant in Taiwan was destroyed the disruption of everything from smartphones to cars could be the biggest manufacturing shock since the Great Depression. Miller is an Associate Professor of International History at Tufts University, and he recently released the book Chip War: The Fight for the World's Most Critical Technology.

Today I'm talking to Pat Gelsinger, the CEO of Intel. I've been excited to have this conversation for a very long time – ever since Pat took over as CEO a little over a year and a half ago. After all. Intel is a very important company with a huge series of challenges in front of it. It's still the largest chip manufacturer by revenue, and makes more chips than any other company in the United States. In fact there are basically only three major chip manufacturers: Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, or TSMC, which is in Taiwan, Samsung, based in South Korea. And Intel, here in the United States. The Intel Pat took over was struggling, and was losing ground to in a variety of markets. But in the past year and a half, Pat's restructured the company, turned over almost all of its leadership positions, opened a new line of business that would compete with TSMC and make chips for other companies including Intel's competitors, and generally tried to reset Intel's famous engineering culture around engineering. Glossary: IFS - Intel Foundry Service. Raptor Lake - codename for intel's Gen 13 processors that were just the day before we had our conversation. Sapphire Rapids - the codename for Intel's 4th generation Xeon server processors. 20A and 18A - 20A is a rebranding of what was intel's 5nm process scheduled to debut in 2024 and 18A is a rebranding of Intels 5nm+ node due out in 2025. Packaging - integrated circuit packaging is the last step of semiconductor fabrication. It's where a block of semiconductor material is put into a case. The case, is known as a "package" and that is what allows you put a circuit on a board. Wafers - When a processor is made they make processors you make hundreds of them at once on a giant wafer.  EUV - is Extreme Ultraviolet Lithography. It's the most advanced way to make chips.  ASML - Is the company that makes the machines that lets you make chips. They are the only company that makes EUV machines. RibbonFET - A new transistor technology that Intel developed. ISV - Independent Software Vendors. PDK - Process Design Kit is a set of files that have data and algorithms that explain the manufacturing parameters for a given silicon process. EDA tools - stands for Electronic Design Automation tools. Basically software tools that are used to design and validate the semiconductor manufacturing process. Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore - the founders of Intel. Andy Grove - employee #3 who went on to become one of their most successful CEOs. Intel's future would be a disaster without Pat Gelsinger. Even with his clear vision, fantastic leadership, deep technical and business acumen and amazing positivity, the company's future is in serious jeopardy. It's the same story we've been telling for years. Volume is king in the semiconductor industry and Intel no longer is the volume leader. Despite Intel's efforts to change that dynamic with several recent moves, including making another go at its foundry business, the company is years away from reversing its lagging position relative to today's leading foundries and design shops. Comme nous vous l'annoncions il y a quelques semaines, Intel prévoit d'investir massivement en Europe pour développer une filière de semi-conducteur sur le vieux continent. Objectif : rendre l'Union Européenne indépendante vis-à-vis des marchés américains et asiatique, ce qui dans le même temps, assurerait une position de quasi-monopole pour Intel chez nous. Et avec les nouveaux détails ayant fuité ces derniers jours, il semblerait que le projet soit encore plus gros qu'attendu.Le PDG d'Intel Pat Gelsinger avait déjà évoqué ce projet il y a peu, et il semble aujourd'hui que le montant de l'enveloppe soit confirmé : Intel investira 80 milliards d'euro sur dix ans… et notamment dans la construction d'une usine nouvelle génération, surnommée je cite « la fabrique de puces la plus avancée au monde ». D'ailleurs, ces puces made in Europe devrait majoritairement approvisionner le secteur de l'automobile. C'est en tout cas ce que l'on peut retenir de l'intervention du président Gelsinger au salon de l'automobile de Munich en septembre. L'usine devrait également être équipé de machine locale, comme les Extreme Ultraviolet Lithography produites par le hollandais ASML.Pour atteindre sa vitesse de croisière en termes de capacité de production, la nouvelle usine d'Intel Europe devrait mobiliser pas moins de 10 000 employés. Pour l'instant, aucun site n'a été formellement identifié, même si certains médias spécialisés se font l'écho de discussion déjà très avancées entre Intel, et les dirigeants français, allemands, belges, polonais et hollandais ces derniers mois. Une chose est sûre, le nouveau site nécessitera non seulement une grande superficie, mais aussi un approvisionnement important en eau et en électricité. Avec ces éléments, on peut déjà dire sans trop se tromper que l'usine devrait être construite soit en bord de mer, soit près d'un fleuve, mais aussi non loin d'une centrale électrique qu'elle soit nucléaire, solaire ou hydraulique.Côté technique, Intel miserait sur le procédé de gravure, je cite à « ouverture numérique élevée » justement proposé par les machines du hollandais ASML, plus précisément en 2 nm. Pour rappel, Intel utilise actuellement une gravure en 10 nm et promet de passer sur une production en 4 nm, puis 3 nm, d'ici 2024. Chez la concurrence, TSMC et Samsung gravent pour l'instant leurs puces en 5 nm. Alors 2, 3, 4, 10 nm… qu'est-ce que ça signifie et à quoi ça sert ? Et bien il s'agit tout simplement de la finesse de gravure des puces. En réduisant leur taille, on peut tout simplement en mettre plus sur une même surface. Les puces peuvent alors effectuer plus de calculs sans consommer d'énergie supplémentaire. Au final, cet investissement colossal d'Intel s'inscrit dans une double logique : s'imposer en maitre sur ce marché en Europe, mais également éviter une éventuelle future pénurie de semi-conducteurs. 一週財經聚焦 一、美國半導體龍頭英特爾(Intel)宣佈將豪擲800億歐元(950億美元),在歐洲建置兩座新廠,擴充在當地的晶片產能。半導體產業的競爭日趨白熱化,我們要怎麼解讀? 國際媒體相關報導 ●Fortune《財富》雜誌:〈Intel CEO says ‘big, honkin' fab' planned for Europe will be world's most advanced〉(英特爾 CEO 表示,計畫在歐洲建造的大型晶圓廠,將是世界上最先進的晶圓廠) ●CNBC:〈Tech giants are rushing to develop their own chips — here's why〉(科技巨頭急於開發自己的晶片—原因在此) ●The Wall Street Journal華爾街日報:〈Intel CEO Pitches Pricey Chip Plants to Officials at Home and Abroad〉(英特爾 CEO 向國內外官員推銷昂貴的晶片廠) 分析解讀 英特爾CEO Pat Gelsinger說,為了歐洲這項擴廠計畫,英特爾10年內將投資800億歐元,正當電腦、汽車、電子產品對晶片需求若渴之際,新廠設施應能迎合半導體的海量需求。 英特爾的競爭勁敵--全球晶圓代工龍頭台積電(TSMC)今年也曾表示,未來三年內斥資1,000億美元擴充產能,投資金額創新紀錄。 另三星電子上月也指出,往後三年投資額計畫加碼三分之一到2,050億美元以上,為的是成為晶片製造的領頭羊。 英特爾特別將汽車晶片視為戰略優先項目。Gelsinger表示,預估2030年前晶片將占汽車製造成本的20%,是2019年占比(4%)的五倍。Gelsinger也提到,往後10年汽車晶片市場整體產值,預料擴張到1,150億美元,是目前規模逾兩倍。 事實上,英特爾早在今年3月就喊出了IDM2.0戰略政策,重返晶圓代工業務,正名數位製程,並積極與客戶爭取合作機會,向美國政府爭取補助,企圖在2025年之前技術趕上臺積電與三星電子。英特爾執行長Pat Gelsinger 9月7日宣佈,更堅定地宣示其決心。 英特爾7月公佈新的製程與封裝創新藍圖規劃,很大程度取決於能否拿到荷蘭半導體設備商艾司摩爾(ASML)的EUV機台。而EUV機台目前供貨吃緊,除了英特爾之外,台積電、三星以及美光都在排隊等貨,因為這是保持先進製程技術的關鍵半導體生產設備。 Semiconductor Advisors的Robert Maire報告揭露,如果英特爾可以搶先採用這些工具,可能是在摩爾定律的競賽當中,有機會超車台積電的好機會。 FactSet數據顯示,英特爾未來3年將投入200億美元,台積電則是未來3年投入1000億美元,憑藉在該行業的領先地位,研發所面臨的風險低於英特爾。也就是說,英特爾想要重奪晶圓代工領域領先地位,就必須採取大膽的行動,在歐洲的投資關鍵性不只一個方面。 除此之外,對美國產業發展比較清楚的人都知道。2014 年,當Satya Nadella接任微軟老闆時,率先打開了 Windows系統,與將這個軟體巨頭的皇冠上寶石和外界完全隔絕的前任CEO不同,他將作業系統 (OS) 暴露在了競爭的微風中。 微軟的程式以往只能在 Windows 上運行,現在則可以在其他的作業系統上運行;這樣的改變既擴大了微軟的市場,又通過迫使其在更平等的條件下與競爭對手競爭,以改進 Windows。在這個過程中,它激烈動搖了微軟的原來文化,並幫助它擺脫了惡劣壟斷者的聲譽,也為驚人的崛起鋪平了道路,現在它的市值已經飆升至到了2 兆美元以上。 Intel這家美國半導體巨頭,長期以來一直像曾經的微軟保護作業系統一樣,神秘地保護著它的核心晶片製造業務。經過多年的產品延遲、錯誤的技術賭注和不斷變化的管理體系,它現在似乎將採取同樣的開放策略,準備好要迎接嶄新的未來。 英特爾新任CEO Pat Gelsinger表示,Intel的工藝、製造以及代工服務(為其他晶片製造商生產處理器)擁有的所有智慧財產,都將向全世界開放。如果成功,Gelsinger 的戰略可能會重塑一個價值 6000 億美元的產業,這個產業正處於快速數位化的全球經濟核心,而且擁有的發展機會更好。從短期來看,如果失敗可能會加劇全球晶片的短缺,這會讓從汽車到資料中心的所有製造商都面臨困境。 我們來看看 Gelsinger 先生的背景。他在 2 月份成為英特爾第三位CEO之前 ,曾長期擔任公司的CTO,加上身為軟體製造商 Vmware 的老闆,他非常了解長達十年的「晶片行業假期」,使他能夠在幾周內改變局面。他的「IDM 2.0戰略」並沒有像一些激進投資者所希望的,將英特爾拆分為一家代工廠和一家晶片設計產業,而是選擇了一種虛擬解構,利用包括 TSMC在內的外部代工廠來節省成本,同時也會從 TSMC的領先製造工藝中受益。 Gelsinger 先生現在正在全球巡演,以解釋和宣傳他的新戰略。在今年早些時候大漲之後,英特爾的股價已大致回落到他被任命之前的水準。Gelsinger 先生似乎無所畏懼,他說,投資者正在問兩個問題:「英特爾能否成功執行這一戰略?」,以及 「這什麼時候會出現在收益中?」 答案將部分取決於英特爾是否可以改變其態度。 這意味著,重新點燃 Gelsinger 所說的「Grovian精神」--這是對公司傳奇聯合創始人安迪格羅夫的引用,他以「只有偏執狂才能生存」的口號而聞名。除此之外,它還必須學習如何與外部客戶合作,並使用其他地方構建的工具。 不過,最重要的是,成功將取決於完美的執行。 所謂的「虛擬代工服務」也面臨挑戰,大多數分析師都同意,代工業務無法與台積電真正競爭。這不僅僅是成本、規模和技術滯後的問題。 哈佛商學院教授 Willy Shih 指出,英特爾還必須說服客戶,它可以克服試圖同時成為 IDM(指從設計、製造、封裝測試到銷售自有品牌都一手包辦的半導體垂直整合型公司)和代工廠的內在利益衝突。在未來半導體短缺的情況下,該公司可能需要決定,是將產能分配給自己的處理器,還是履行與代工客戶的合約。 因此,這個賭注很高,不僅僅是英特爾。 如果它繼續失去優勢,結果幾乎肯定是會讓其他半導體企業進一步整合,今天的少數幾家大型晶片製造商,最終可能會被縮減為雙頭壟斷。 即使有更多的工廠倖存下來,大多數晶圓廠也可能都設在亞洲(儘管 TSMC計劃在亞利桑那州建廠)。 西方政府並不是唯一應該關注 Gelsinger 先生開放舉措結果的人,今天的科技巨頭也應該如此。 與之前的微軟一樣,英特爾陷入困境,主要是因為它對其皇冠上的珠寶過度保護;其他人則可能會認為,避免此類問題的最佳方法是先發制人。 蘋果成為了其App Store 裡有容乃大的管家;Facebook 可以讓其社交網絡與競爭對手的社交網絡更好地合作;Google可以讓手機製造商更自由地修改其 Android 移動操作系統…..這不但減輕了反壟斷的擔憂,也使股東更加的快樂。而英特爾應該也有開放的機會。 半導體產業對台積電的嚴重倚賴,在今年激起了世界各國的危機意識。KPMG發佈《2021年全球半導體產業大調查》,結果發現,2021年半導體領導者信心指數是61分,從2020年的59分提高2分,此為過去15年來追蹤調查的信心指數第二高分,2009年信心指數為64分。 半導體產業有以下三大挑戰,分別是:屬地主義/民族主義、供應鏈問題、及人才管理危機。還有就是ESG轉型準備。 ■ 屬地主義/民族主義 民族主義之下的貿易環境,對半導體公司構成了威脅。53%的受訪者表示,屬地主義是半導體產業中最大的威脅,包含:跨國租稅協定、邊界貿易協議、關稅、法規及國家安全等議題。 中美兩強的對峙,也會增加貿易成本壓力、增加供應鏈管理的複雜度,以及影響半導體生態系。 ■ 供應鏈問題 隨著疫情成為半導體增長的催化劑,企業的策略重點反映其長期的發展,預測在半導體產業中未來三年的主要策略,包含落實業務增長計畫、人才發展與管理,以及供應鏈如何更具彈性以達到供貨穩定。 ■ 人才管理危機 半導體產業的專業人才不足,而台灣的人力優勢也是台積電脫穎而出的原因。但因應遠距、異地的新工作模式,讓企業能招募跨國的優秀人員,未來只要針對團 隊合作、工作效率加以管理,應就能達到企業的發展需求。 ■ 企業永續經營 因應地緣政治的變化和供應鏈的管理,全球各政府對ESG的壓力越來越大,要求也越來越多。企業如何在保持一定的毛利及經濟效益下落實ESG,也是一個重要的問題。 除此之外,半導體產業有以下四項行動方案: ■ 強化數位轉型 未來AI和雲端服務將是兵家必爭之地,企業應優先考慮具有潛在業務機會的投資,加速結合ICT或AI技術推動變革,以使企業具差異化、推動組織內部的數位化。 ■ 供應鏈彈性及優化管理 因應客戶及市場需求進行供應鏈廣度分析,將稅收優化納入分析,定義微觀供應鏈系統並加以優化管理。 ■ 研發及資本投資配置 現在是資本戰的世界,嚴格評估是否將資源部署於現有競爭優勢上,策略性收購或開發新的合作夥伴關係,甚至善用投資運作,強化投資組合及資產配置,這對半導體產業很重要。 ■ 關稅風險減除 考慮在本地、雙重來源及多重來源的採購策略,檢視其他許多減輕或回收新關稅成本的可用方法,將方案規劃和企業風險評估納入日常營運計畫中。 以上,就是目前半導體所面臨的威脅,以及該採取的行動策略建議。 二、KPMG 公佈《2021年首席執行官展望動向調查》,發現近半數(45%)的全球CEO認為,在2022年之前不會看到業務恢復到「正常化」,而近三分之一(31%)的CEO則預計這將在今年晚些時候發生。同時,疫情引發的變化使得四分之一(24%)的CEO們表示,他們的商業模式已經被永遠地改變了。 國際媒體相關報導 ●Fortune《財富》雜誌:〈The record-breaking M&A market could get even hotter〉(破紀錄的併購市場,可能會變得更加火爆) ●Business Insider:〈The number of bosses saying they plan to downsize their office space has dropped from last year. It's a sign that hybrid working is set be a long-term trend.〉(與去年相比,計劃將縮小辦公空間的老闆數量有所減少,這表明混合工作將成為一種長期趨勢。) ●Financial Times倫敦金融時報:〈ECB to slow bond-buying as Europe's economy improves〉(隨著歐洲經濟好轉,歐洲央行將放緩購債步伐) 分析解讀 隨著資本市場與疫情肆虐的同步反差存在,所有企業CEO正面對一個充滿不確定,又不得不提早佈局的尷尬時刻。 於是,我們正看見全球企業掀起一個前所未見的併購熱潮,收購公司與SPAC(空白支票企業)也砸下數百億美元展開交易,這使得2021年前八個月的併購規模創下歷年同期新高,也為銀行與金融機構帶來豐厚財源。 據資料供應商Dealogic數據,美國今年1到8月的合併與併購高達1.8兆美元,全球上看3.6兆美元,兩數據皆創下Dealogic 1995年開始追蹤此數據以來的同期最高,預料2021全年將刷新2015年締造的高峰。 這波併購熱潮也為華爾街賺進大把鈔票,包括大型銀行和顧問公司,在今年上半的交易顧問收入都躍升至新高。身為華爾街頂尖交易處理商的高盛,過去三季每季收費都超過10億美元,在疫情前的十年,只有一次達到此水準。 隨著去年經濟回穩,企業管理層觀察數個月,都認為是到了該改變策略的時候。高盛投資銀行部共同主管Dan Dees就表示,所有的構想都已在董事會成員與執行長心中,該如何重新佈署,成了最優先議題。 KPMG公佈的《2021年CEO展望》(2021 CEO Outlook)的早期研究顯示,在超過400位受調查的大型公司CEO中,有49%表示,計劃在未來三年裡,將進行對公司經營有「重大影響」的併購。 另有37%的受訪CEO表示,他們對併購的意願適中,不過,有可能進行對公司的整體組織存在中等影響的收購業務。 KPMG的CEO Paul·Knopp告訴《財富》雜誌,併購意願持續加強的背後,是CEO們想要改變公司組織的意圖。依照多項數據顯示,今年迄今為止,公佈的全球併購業務共計35128項,較去年同期增長24%。 CEO們對美國國內經濟以及自家公司的增長前景,懷抱著充分的信心;與此同時,在市場當中存在大量的流動資產,資金利率很低,多達數兆美元的未投資資本尚處於觀望狀態。 但是,許多公司的CEO仍然看到了即將到來的風險,甚至超越了新冠疫情所帶來的影響。在KPMG的報告中,CEO們認為最高的五項風險為:稅收、供應鏈斷裂、信譽風險、氣候變化,以及網絡安全。 毫無疑問,CEO們正在排兵布陣,建立攻守。 在「進攻」端,各個CEO都在計劃著更為激進的併購戰略,並加強措施,以保證更為迅速的數位化進程; 而在「防守」端,他們正在加強供應鏈彈性,增強其應對惡意軟體和勒索軟體等網絡安全威脅的能力。僅有11%的受訪CEO認為,自己的公司已經完全擁有抵禦網絡攻擊的能力。 除此之外,在去年的調查中,CEO們將人才問題視為一項「主要危機」;而在今年,人才問題已經升級成了「優先事項」。許多公司目前面臨嚴重的勞動力短缺,高階主管們正在制定策略來解決這一問題。 為了確保僱員更好地參與公司治理,更具主動性、效率更高,各家企業愈發關注僱員的心理健康以及個人福祉,注資讓員工提升技能,發展員工多樣性,並提供機會,讓員工在更多的議題上發出的聲音,並能夠被高層聽到,例如種族歧視和氣候變化等問題。 大約59%的CEO直言,他們正在考慮共用辦公空間,在新冠疫情的背景下,允許更有彈性的辦公方式。超過半數(53%)的公司高階主管還考慮了招收遠距工作員工;約有三分之一的公司高階主管表示,其公司員工將每週至少兩天遠距辦公。 總而言之,放眼未來,全球的CEO都清楚,雖然現在仍處於疫情的陰影下,但疫情過後大家都蓄勢待發,就看誰能夠取得先機。資本運作和併購的熱潮,看來是欲罷不能。 《經濟學人》總評 本期經濟學人是雙封面,我要特別介紹的是歐美版本的封面故事。在戰火煙硝的背景前面,巧妙的以紐約被炸毀的雙子星世貿大廈拼出的911,提醒我們這個事件已屆滿二十周年。下面有著一排翻白的補充文字:「America then and now 」(美國的過去與現在)。 這期的經濟學人,帶我們重新回顧了2001 年 9 月 11 日的慘痛記憶。 20 年前的911事件後,美國嘗試向外重塑新的全球秩序,今天的我們卻清楚看見美國再次改弦易轍,決定把這個外交政策拋棄在阿富汗喀布爾機場的跑道上。拜登表示,從阿富汗撤軍是為了「結束一個遠距離戰爭的時代」,但這讓美國的盟友不上不下,並讓敵對國家感覺欣喜若狂。 有些人從中看到了美國的無能和衰落,但這個看法言過其實了。越南西貢的淪陷,並沒有進一步導致西方在冷戰的失勢。儘管美國確實有其缺陷,包括它的分裂、債務和破舊的基礎設施,但其在許多方面仍然完好無損。例如,它在全球 GDP 的份額仍然高達25%,與 1990 年代其實相去不遠。此外,它在科技和軍事上的領先仍然存在。儘管公眾輿論已經轉向內縮,但與 1930 年代的孤立主義相比,美國的全球利益仍然依賴著全球化。 美國擁有 900 萬的海外公民、3900 萬個貿易支援的工作崗位,和 33 兆美元的外國資產,一個開放的世界,對美國仍然具有巨大的吸引力。 拜登主義的首要原則,是堅持外交政策必須為美國的中產階級服務。拜登認為美國在海外所採取的每一個行動,都必須考慮到美國的中產階級、工薪家庭。經濟學人承認,外交政策既受突發事件的影響,更受到戰略的指引。布希曾經在富有同理心的保守主義平臺上推動美國外交,而不是反恐戰爭,拜登必須在這個多變的時代學會靈活對應。 經濟學人認為,拜登不應該妄想,一個屈從於美國國內緊張情勢的外交政策可以重振美國、再次領導這個世界。 Powered by Firstory Hosting

Pat Gelsinger has been CEO of Intel for about four months now. But he's not new to the company - he spent the first 30 years of his career at Intel. The story of how a young man from a Pennsylvania farming community landed at Intel is a good one - and it's something Pat shares with Alan Murray and Ellen McGirt in this episode of Leadership Next. But first, semiconductors. They're embedded in all the tech we touch, and most of them are manufactured in Asia. Supply chain problems have led to shortages recently, which has put the issue on many American's radars. But the push to increase manufacturing capacity in the U.S. has been building for some time. Gelsinger admits Intel ceding manufacturing to Asia was a strategic mistake and, as he explains, he has a strategy for improving the situation. Fortune's Eamon Barrett also joins this episode to shed further light on the global chip shortage, the challenges of increasing manufacturing in the U.S., and the political forces behind initiatives to do so.

事實上,金融危機以來,過去十年股票和債券價格的上漲,都是因為長期為了緩解通貨膨脹壓力導致的全球QE(量化寬鬆)。在全球經濟突然關閉將近一年之後,經濟活動又開始加速增長,合理的結果,當然就是通貨膨脹預期的激增。 現在但是令投資者困惑的是,現階段通貨膨脹的前景到底如何解讀? 現在擔心通貨膨脹衝擊的投資者,正面臨兩難境地,從以下三項經濟及就業市場的轉變,可以觀察: 1.被視為抵禦這種風險的傳統避險工具的一些資產,例如抗通膨債券(Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities, 簡稱 TIPS),和大宗商品,已經開始明顯的上升。 實際上,一定時期內通貨膨脹一直很熱,歷史確實為那些太晚購買昂貴的通貨膨脹保護措施的人提供了警告。過去的通貨膨脹警報,是在2000年代初互聯網泡沫破滅後,以及2008年金融危機之後的恢復期,事實證明,兩次都是虛假的曙光。 在經歷了短暫的疫情衰退之後,人口老齡化和根深蒂固的通貨緊縮趨勢,以及與科技創新相關的成本下降,這些因素短期之內是不會減緩的。因此,許多投資者和FED預計,今年的通膨還是「暫時性的」。 但是,對抗通貨緊縮的力量,卻是過去一年貨幣和財政刺激措施最大的依據。這樣的雙重壓力之下,當然,物價上漲的壓力就蠢蠢欲動。 但截至目前為止,聯準會多位官員仍然表示,今年通膨雖然會升溫,但不會太強,預料只是短暫現象,供應鏈問題解決後就會緩和。 不過美股確實賣壓沉重,道瓊指數一度重挫681點,創3個多月來最糟表現。科技股一蹶不振,台積電美國存託憑證(ADR)甚至跌逾4%。 反映市場利率預期的美國10年期公債殖利率,在最新通膨數據公佈後竄升,從昨天的1.62%升至1.69%,創3月以來最大單日升幅。 素有美股「恐慌指數」之稱的芝加哥選擇權交易所(CBOE)波動率指數(VIX),盤中一度衝破28,有別於前兩個月多保持在20以下的格局。意味美股短線波動,恐隨通貨膨脹憂慮升溫而加劇。 過去40多年來,財金政策都以打擊通貨膨脹為優先要務,對投資人與消費者友善的政策不再流行,不只美國,全球許多國家皆然。但很明顯,投資人對這個轉變並未做好準備,可能是因為很難指出此種歷史性轉捩點的確定位置。 「狼來了」是否會真的出現,沒人知道。而疫情過後的支出激增,加上供給能力受限所引發的短期通膨壓力,可能是大轉變的起點。 無論是之前葉倫主政,還是現在鮑爾擔綱,Fed都重視充分就業這項這第個指標。Fed尤其聚焦於邊際勞工的福祉,包括少數種族,因此有意使景氣的熱度處於正常水準,這就是Fed不容易快速升息的主要原因。 川普大幅降低企業稅率,因此早在肺炎疫情爆發之前預算赤字已經暴增;拜登上任後更願意大筆花錢,而民調顯示他新提出的兩項支出計畫(美國就業計畫和美國家庭計畫)也得到多數民眾支持,雖然他也主張提高企業及富人的稅負。 但我們也無法否認,通貨膨脹的壓力,最可怕不在於它會不會發生,而是它的預期性。尤其現階段,運行超過40年的全球化和資本主義,現在「全球化」已經過了頂峰,所以希望藉著全球化,讓全世界的產品在全球不同國家能有大致相同的售價,這種情形已不在存在。區域化的競爭,會讓物價上漲的壓力變大。 2.人口老齡化 全球化的好處之一,就是當本國勞動力擴張減速時,可以用外勞來取代;而美國過去十年來人口增加率,也是1930年代以來最低。當勞工面臨的競爭壓力下降,且較不擔心企業外移時,他們就能要求較高的工資。 3.勞工權力大增 拜登政府強力支持工會,且組織工會也可能比以往容易。近年來朝向「零工經濟」發展的趨勢,能夠增強勞工市場的競爭及壓低勞工所得,但現在這種潮流已經受到國家的壓力,且多個歐洲國家也打擊企業規避雇用法規的作法。美國勞工部長最近建議,許多美國「零工經濟」領域的勞工應被劃歸為雇用人員,讓他們得享更多權益,不過,這樣企業的成本也就更高了。 上述的三項轉變都在慢慢進行之中,且除了入口結構因素之外,每一項轉變都有很強的政治後座力。如果我們的確處於轉捩點上,此時如果犯錯,代價將非常之高。 投資人在殖利率僅1.6%時買進10年期美國公債,一旦通膨升高,將會損失慘重。即使通膨率達到2%目標一段時間,投資人也將損失購買力;如果年通膨率升到3%,即1990年代的平均水準,則公債投資人將非常痛苦;如果通膨率升到1980年代時平均5%的水準,對公債投資人而言將是「大屠殺」。 現在就認定定通膨將一路衝高,仍言之過早。但如果在建立投資組合時完全不考慮通貨膨脹,那你的風險會更大。 二、5月14日,一個由美國兩黨參議員組成的小組公佈了一項520億美元的提案,將在5年內大幅提高美國半導體晶片生產和研究水準。 看來半導體的競賽已經擋不住,台灣半導體護國神山的挑戰很快就會來到。 國際媒體相關報導 ●CNBC:〈Biden's infrastructure plan will bolster the U.S. semiconductor industry, Commerce Secretary says〉(拜登的基礎建設計劃,將著重推動半導體產業) ●CNBC:〈The global chip shortage is starting to have major real-world consequences〉(全球晶片短缺將,對全世界產生重大影響 ●Reuters路透社:〈Intel seeks $10 bln in subsidies for European chip plant〉(英特爾向歐洲尋求100億美元的補貼) 分析解讀 5月14日,幾位美國參議員公佈了美國半導體製造五年扶植計畫,規模高達520億美元。據瞭解,起草這個方案的參議員包括民主黨籍的亞利桑那州參議員凱利、維吉尼亞州參議員華納,以及共和黨籍阿肯色州參議員柯頓等人。 這幾位參議員認為,面對中國大陸半導體製造業的崛起,以及晶片短缺衝擊汽車業與其他產業,美國必須商討出折中做法應對。 這項提案,預期會納入參院本周將討論的「Endless Frontier Act 無盡邊疆」法案之內,該法案準備撥款逾1,100億美元,用於支援美國的基礎與半導體先進技術研發,以期更能與大陸競爭。 其實這個情況情有可原,大力扶植美國本土半導體製造業的人士強調,美國在1990年時,在全球半導體與微電子製造的占比還有37%,現在只剩下12%的晶片在美國製造。 另外,美國遊說團體「半導體聯盟」積極爭取政府補助國產晶片。美國半導體聯盟是由蘋果Apple、Microsoft、Intel及TSMC等60多家廠商組成,成員除半導體廠外,還包含上下游業者,主要向美國爭取補助,鼓勵在美國境內從事晶片製造業務。 但台灣疫情的突然爆發,也讓許多國家憂心忡忡。韓聯社引述南華早報的報導指出,若未能阻止疫情向南擴散,台灣經濟可能面臨最糟局面。 渣打銀行資深經濟學家Tony Phoo指出,若確診者持續增加、疫情向南擴散,半導體業等製造業工廠勢必受影響關閉,影響產能,可能造成全球半導體供給不足問題更加惡化。 無巧不巧,美國半導體龍頭英特爾執行長Pat Gelsinger,5月14日剛好分享了英特爾年度企業責任報告,並強調該公司往2030年目標實現進展。基辛格認為,由於有四股「超級力量」推動,數位科技正以更快的速度改變世界,這四股超級力量分別是雲端、由5G推動的連網性、人工智慧(Al),以及智慧邊緣。 Gelsinger談到,上述四項之所以被稱為超級力量,是因為彼此能發揮相輔相成的效果,讓影響力得以加乘,它們正在重塑我們生活和工作的每個層面。 但同時間,歐盟打造半導體聯盟雖然想要拉英特爾助陣,不過對方獅子大開口要求巨額補貼,引起德國媒體正反兩極的評價。 英特爾(Intel)執行長Pat Gelsinger最近訪問柏林和布魯賽爾,表達有意加入歐洲半導體聯盟,並在德國建晶圓廠的意願。不過強調,為了與台灣和韓國競爭,前提是德國政府必須提供80億美元(約合新台幣2300億元)的補貼。 德國「商報」(Handelsblatt)認為,英特爾的要求情有可原。目前全球只有台積電、三星、英特爾有能力生產先進晶片,前兩家享受母國的規模經濟優勢,對投資歐洲興趣缺缺,只剩下英特爾有意願,儘管技術離前兩者有一段距離。給一家企業這麼多補貼是很大的冒險,但如果英特爾不來投資,歐盟除了繼續依賴亞洲之外沒有其它選擇,毫無翻身機會。 不過,另一家德國重要財經媒體「經濟週刊」(Wirtschaftswoche),則不看好英特爾的雄心。「經濟週刊」指出,英特爾技術不如台積電和三星,不可能拿到蘋果(Apple)等大廠的訂單,季辛格想自製晶片又寄望代工業務追上競爭者,根本不切實際。 Gelsinger接受德國媒體訪問時,督促德國政府針對補貼盡快做出決定,他說:「現在是歷史關鍵的一刻,我們還能扭轉下滑趨勢,減少對亞洲廠商的依賴,如果再拖5年就太晚了。」 歐盟為減少對進口產品的依賴,5日將公佈新的工業政策,準備全面強化半導體、雲端、電池芯、氫能源等未來產業的生態系。 到底歐盟會不會跟英特爾合作,我的觀察如何? 在此引述KPMG安侯建業聯合會計師事務所發佈《2021年全球半導體產業大調查》,報告強調,半導體的未來將面臨三大挑戰:屬地主義/民族主義、供應鏈短缺問題,及人才管理危機。 民族主義者之下的貿易環境,對半導體公司構成了挑戰。53%的受訪者(較去年上升16%)表示,屬地主義是半導體產業中最大的威脅,包含跨國租稅協定、邊界貿易協議、關稅、法規及國家安全等議題。中國及美國兩個世界最大經濟體,將增加貿易成本壓力、增加供應鏈管理的複雜度,及影響半導體生態系。 台積電是世界半導體產業龍頭,去年營收六成來自北美,近兩成來自中國。如何在兩個地緣政治強權之間獲得平衡,其實是不容易。台積電創辦人張忠謀早就預言,台積電會是地緣政治必爭之地,美國要它,歐盟邀它設廠,大陸也想將台積電納入囊中。 台積電去年宣佈在亞利桑納州投資35億元,興建五奈米先進晶圓廠;近日再宣佈將投資29億美元,在大陸南京廠擴建28奈米晶圓產能;這本是台積電在美中地緣政治求取平衡的策略,但這也反應出台積電面對兩大強權,已有點捉襟見肘。 拜登繼邀請19家半導體業者舉行供應鏈高峰會,又稱將提撥500億元,建立美國半導體供應鏈。既想圍堵中國半導體業,也想加強美國半導體供應鏈建置。 2020年確實可能會是台灣護國神山的頂峰,能不能再造巔峰,就得像《經濟學人》文章說的: 「截至目前為止,中美雙方都沒有直接幹預台積電的決策,或許是因為兩方都認為現行手段最為適合,可以幫助他們達成各自的科技目標。然而,如果晶片製造的重要程度繼續攀升,中、美就可能會出手,不讓它(台積電)單獨生存下去。」 看來這確實需要有智慧的政治家來權衡取捨,幫台灣找到戰略了。 《經濟學人》總評 封面故事 這期《經濟學人》共用了十篇文章,對Covid-19的疫情狀況做了一個重新的模型估算,他們成功揭露了這場疫情的真實狀況,並對全球提出了緊急的呼籲。 在黑漆漆的封底前面,我們看見的是一隻橫空出世的疫苗針筒,左上緣一段白色文字:「Ten million reasons to vaccinate the world」(一千萬個用疫苗治癒這個世界的理由);右下方則是:「Our new model of the true deaths toll from Covid-19」(我們針對Covid-19的真實死亡人數新模型)。 《經濟學人》在整本雜誌裡方方面面揭露了一些截然不同的實際狀況,並語重心長的呼籲,除非疫苗的供應能夠很快的送達貧窮的國家,否則《經濟學人》認為,印度正在經歷的場景很快會擴散到其他地區。 模型顯示 「Excess Death超額死亡」人數是官方公佈的三倍,而更重要的一個發現是Covid-19對相對貧窮族群的打擊超過想像。也許最終能夠阻止疫情慘況的就是疫苗接種,然而短期內,疫苗會催化貧窮與富裕國家之間的差距。不久之後,富裕國家的Covid-19死亡人數會隨著疫苗接種而慢慢下降,但貧窮國家的大多數人卻有可能因為疫苗接種的困難,而必須暴露在疫情的威脅。 不過《經濟學人》認為,疫苗的擴產在2022年前就可以跟上腳步,還公開表示拜登的開放專利訴求是錯誤的,因為這些呼籲虛偽而緩不濟急。貧窮國家不是因為價格而被市場遺忘,真正的原因,是全球疫苗必須通過COVAX,這個由捐助者資助的全球分銷計劃進行分配。 我認為,《經濟學人》提供的模型估算不是危言聳聽,它告訴我們Covid-19隱藏版的數據背後真相。其中一個例子就是東南亞,這個屬於6億5000萬人的家園,迄今為止不知道什麼原因,沒有出現大量的疫情死亡人數。 不止台灣,Covid-19仍在全球各地肆虐,但疫苗確實創造了拯救數百萬人生命的一個機會。《經濟學人》呼籲這個世界不要白白浪費它,我願意舉雙手呼應。 Powered by Firstory Hosting

Buy now, pay later startup Affirm is looking to acquisitions to gain an edge over its competitors.Affirm announced that it intends to acquire Returnly, a software startup that helps retailers manage returns, for $300 million in cash and equity. The acquisition gives more insight into exactly how Affirm — and some of its other competitors — are mapping out their strategies for what else they can offer retailers, beyond just a digital form of layaway.Online legal service Rocket Lawyer has raised $223 million of financing from an investor group led by Vista Credit Partners to further its international expansion and make acquisitions in a fragmented market.The company, which has 25 million registered users, already offers online legal documents and virtual attorney meetings to businesses and individuals in the U.S., U.K. and parts of Europe. Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger has resigned from VMware's board of directors, effective immediately, two months after leaving the top leadership post at the virtualization giant to lead the chipmaker.Palo Alto, based VMware said in a regulatory filing Friday that Gelsinger notified the company of his resignation two days prior. The company said it was Gelsinger's “personal decision,” “given the demands of his new position as CEO of Intel.”“We are grateful for his many years of service on the Board and his tenure as CEO of VMware,” VMware said in a statement.

眾所周知,蘇伊士運河全長約163公里,連接著地中海和紅海,提供了亞洲和歐洲之間最短的海上通道,全球貿易大約12%都需透過它來完成。 如何「解救」這艘巨輪,讓埃及蘇伊士運河管理局傷透了腦筋。迄今為止,這次中斷已阻礙了超過327艘船過境,其中包括30多艘集裝箱船。 數據分析稱,運河封鎖會造成每小時約4億美元的損失,一天下來就損失百億,而船東和保險公司或將面臨總計超過1億美元的索賠。現在很多人關心的是怎麼善了?誰最倒霉?誰會倒閉?我覺得都是行外話。長賜輪真正的所有者,也就是法律意義上的船東並不是長榮公司,而是日本正榮汽船株式會社。所以,事件發生後,日本船東的出鏡率和受關注度比長榮高得多。 航運業是高度國際化的產業,發展很成熟,有一套複雜的經營模式。長賜輪是個國際分工合作的典型,也就是租船模式—A機構出資造船,由B機構負責資產管理,租給C機構實際投入航運運營。A就是日本正榮、B是貝仕船舶管理(母公司是德國貝仕集團,全資家族企業,全球多國開設了分公司)、C是臺灣長榮海運。 而長賜輪的船籍國是巴拿馬,船籍國就是船舶的「戶口」所在國,登記在哪國就懸掛哪一國的國旗,向哪一國繳納相關稅收。巴拿馬對掛本國旗的船舶管理寬鬆、稅收低廉,各國船東都很樂意去蹭個戶口,因此這類國家被稱為「方便旗」國家—這有個業內冷笑話,連內陸國也可以成為方便旗國家,比如蒙古和瑞士。 最後出場的是印度,長賜輪25名船員全部為印度籍。所以這個百年產業受損情況肯定耗時費日,最後還會船過水無痕。 但更令人擔憂的是,蝴蝶效應已經顯現。如果不盡快「釋放」這艘船,將影響物價,甚至有評估指出,「塞船效應」會波及商店中看到的任何東西的價格。 影響最大的,主要是以下三項: 第一,「塞船」導致油價顯著上漲 隨著部分地區疫情趨緩,全球貿易有所回暖,多數企業在尋求補充庫存。在這一年中最繁忙的時刻,長賜號卻擱淺了。 運河突然被切斷,首當其衝的,是對油價的影響。在全球需要通過海路運輸的石油中,大約有30%都要經過蘇伊士運河。光是去年,歐洲每天需要從蘇伊士以東的國家進口55萬桶石油,其中52萬桶通過運河。 這次堵船,阻塞了一條重要的原油運輸路線,使得石油價格在國際市場上攀升,基準油價在週三飆升了約6%。人們擔心石油在運河上停滯越久,越可能會擠壓原油和精煉產品的供應,從而給全球供應鏈帶來壓力。 第二,衛生紙、咖啡等面臨短缺 除了油價,還有物價。除了影響能源運輸,堵船還將會及與每個人息息相關的電子產品、生活用品、食品等物資。 船隻被堵在航道上,歐洲的商品因收不到到來自亞洲的零部件和原材料而延誤製程,而空的集裝箱也無法返回亞洲再次裝運。運河封鎖,會造成每小時約4億美元的損失。其中,裝滿即溶咖啡的集裝箱被卡在路上,預計很快就會影響咖啡供應。傢具方面也受到波及,有很多客戶開始反應,自己訂購傢具的交付日期已經被推遲。 第三,國際航運商會秘書長蓋伊·普拉滕表示,不僅長賜號上的貨品會嚴重延誤,其他被堵住的數百艘船上的物品,也會延遲交貨,這對全球供應鏈的損害將是巨大的。考慮到包括醫療設備和個人防護設備在內的重要貨物,正在透過這些船隻運輸,我們呼籲埃及當局盡一切可能,盡快重新開放運河。」 那麼,該怎麼「解救」這艘巨輪? 目前,長賜號的船東—日本正榮汽船株式會社,已為這次事件道歉,並表示,將由荷蘭和日本打撈公司組成的專業救援隊,與地方當局合作,努力幫助船隻復位。據估計,船東和保險公司可能將面臨總計超過1億美元的索賠。 眼下最要緊的,是趕緊讓船「脫困」。然而,僅靠拖船和挖泥機的組合,還不夠解決問題。研究小組還必須找到一種減輕船隻巨大重量的方法。他們可能要卸下部分船上的貨物,還需要排乾燃油和壓艙水,然後再次嘗試使用拖船推動該船。 同時,由於船上還有多個集裝箱,用起重機將這些集裝箱卸下的操作將是極具挑戰性的,該過程還可能造成損壞甚至使船體失去平衡。 根據蘇伊士運河管理局的數據,2020年間,有近1萬9千艘船舶通過運河,平均每天有51.5艘。想要將大宗貨物從亞洲運往歐洲,除了海運幾乎沒有其他選擇。運河堵塞之後,一些船舶只能在非洲各地選擇替代路線,不過,航程大約會增加兩周時間,運費也會大幅增加。 2017年,一艘日本集裝箱船也曾因機械故障擱淺堵住了運河。 埃及當局部署了拖船,並在數小時內使船隻重新漂浮了起來。美國海事歷史學家表示,此次堵船事件非常少見,而且這是有史以來在蘇伊士運河上擱淺的最大船隻。 儘管蘇伊士運河最初是為處理較小的船舶而設計的,但在近50年來,蘇伊士運河已經在規模和寬度上增加了一倍。最近的一次是六年前,埃及政府對運河進行了大規模擴建,加深了主航道,並為船隻提供了一條與之平行的35公里航道,耗資超過80億美元。 保證可內部生產大部分的產品,這與Intel的營收及產品供貨能力息息相關。對此,Gelsinger強調,英特爾希望繼續在內部完成大部分產品的生產。 第二,將擴大對第三方製造能力的使用 Gelsinger表示,為優化英特爾的成本、性能、進度、供應等方面的進度,該公司將增強與現有第三方代工廠夥伴之間的合作,包括台積電,繼續維持合作關係。 第三,將為歐美客戶提供晶圓代工及封測服務 模式2.0願景,英特爾與其生態合作夥伴IBM共同宣佈了一項重要的研究合作計劃,專注創建下一代邏輯晶片封裝技術,該項目旨在加速半導體製造的創新。 值得注意的是,Gelsinger在演講發佈後,台積電(TSMC)和三星(Samsung)股價下跌,但因預期英特爾將增加支出,半導體設備製造商,包括尼康公司(Nikon Corp.)、Lasertec公司(Lasertec Corp.)、東京電子(Tokyo Electron)等,股價都是上漲。 就像我曾經說的,美國已開始為重振半導體產業而採取行動。在拜登政權倡導生產回歸政策的背景下,大型廠商英特爾將投入鉅額資金,在美國建造新工廠,並同時涉足量產其他產品的代工業務。半導體是支撐數位化社會的核心產品,但最尖端的開發製造經驗,容易流向在生產上更勝一籌的台灣和韓國,這就是他們擔心的原因。 但大家也知道英特爾在7納米開發方面進展遲緩,目前英特爾的競爭對手確實走在前面。對比今年前三家企業的設備投資額,台積電(TSMC)為280億美元,三星電子基本相同。英特爾200億美元的投資,是明顯不夠的。 事實上早在1990年代,英特爾曾在個人電腦CPU領域成績亮眼,但進入2000年代後失去勢頭,最後只專注在IDM。英特爾採用從開發到生產全部自主完成的垂直整合型業務模式,但堅持拒絕為其他企業代工,只專注於自主產品的經營戰略。 當時,美國高通等廠商已開始崛起採用,他們採用「無廠」經營模式,因為英特爾拒絕為其代工,無廠企業只好選擇台積電和三星,台積電更是將半導體生產作為主業。代工企業生產的半導體很廣泛,包括家電、智慧型手機和汽車等。客戶和強有力供應商從全球自然而然湧來,技術與經驗的蓄積取得大幅進展。 良性循環在較高技術實力上的確是幫了台積電一把,台積電也因為專注代工,而與荷蘭大型半導體設備企業ASML建立了深厚的人脈。因此,美國政府對英特爾的競爭力下降,充滿危機感,我們看見美國商務部官員也參加了英特爾23日的記者會,並對此計劃表示了讚許。 為迎合拜登政權的意向,英特爾此次宣佈正式啓動代工。這是此前Intel不願意做的事,但如果無廠企業希望在美國尋找代工廠商,業務的收益性將提高。未來,半導體還會用於戰鬥機和人造衛星,在軍事上也不可或缺。在川普時期,國防部就不斷與英特爾推進新建工廠的磋商。在1月拜登政權上台的同時,全球半導體短缺變得嚴重,美國政府相關人士即表示「危機感迅速提高」。 英特爾的加入讓晶圓代工市場肯定變得更加擁擠,但英特爾仍有以下幾項優勢: 第一,英特爾的晶片設計部門,仍會盡量讓代工部門為其代工;代工部門做不了的,才會尋求如台積電、三星等第三方製作。換言之,英特爾的代工部門最大的客戶其實是自己的設計部門,先天就含著金湯匙。 第二,英特爾的代工廠多位於美國及歐洲,其代工客戶如微軟、IBM、思科(Cisco)及愛立信(Ericsson)等,也多位於兩地,距離客戶更近,聯繫溝通上,會比位於亞洲地區的台積電、三星更俱優勢。 第三,在美國擴增產能及進行晶圓代工,非常符合美國政府的國家利益,美國財政部長葉倫(Janet Yellen)也已表示,晶圓製造為美國國家戰略重要一環,因此英特爾的代工部門可望得到政府的大力支持,如財政、物力及人力等。 當然,英特爾也有其劣勢。 首先,過往代工部門以服務內部客戶為主,要轉變為服務外部客戶並不容易,英特爾並不習慣外部服務的模式。 其次,代工成本上,美國高於亞洲地區,這不利英特爾在價格上取得競爭優勢,這也是當年晶片代工業主要流向亞洲地區的主要原因。 第三,其潛在客戶多為英特爾的直接競爭者,如超微、英偉達(NVIDIA)、高通(Qualcomm)等,又外部客戶多半使用基於安謀(ARM)的晶片架構,英特爾的代工部門過往習於替自家的X86架構代工,恐不見得能夠得到很好的接納。 最後,英特爾的制程才剛突破7奈米,落後於已能夠量產5奈米的台積電和三星,難以爭取蘋果、高通等需要使用最先進制程的客戶,這也會反向制約英特爾繼續研制先進制程的能力。 綜觀英特爾此次的業務重整,仍然著重於保住核心的晶片設計業務,期望能使用更優異的第三方制程,使其產品保持競爭優勢,在剝離代工部門後,有助於英特爾整體降低成本。代工部門則放任自行生長,以其7奈米制程爭取訂單,尋覓更多商機;且在美國政府政策扶持的情況下,自生自滅的風險也是相當低的。 總體來說,市場對於英特爾的業務重整,短期內還是認可的,但是長期狀況,顯然還是得看英特爾的自身表現而定。無論是設計部門還是代工部門,仍然有各自要面對的市場競爭環境。 而英特爾業務重整後最大的受益者,就是阿斯麥爾(ASML),以及其他的晶片設備廠商,他們肯定訂單滿手。 對於台灣的半導體產業,尤其是台積電來說,此次英特爾的業務重整是喜憂摻半。喜的一面是,台積電可望在短期內拿到來自英特爾,需要高階制程的新產品訂單,憂的一面則是,市場上潛在的強大競爭對手又多了一個,儘管英特爾或許可能成為像是格芯或中芯國際那樣,第二層級的對手。 台積電擁有多年來投入的技術優勢,其先進制程擁有強力的護城河,也有長期以來從代工業務贏取的客戶關係。然而其最大的威脅在於:外部環境方面,中美科技戰競爭加劇,如何保持訂單最大化,內部環境則在於,如何應對台灣政府不時想插手介入其業務,以及台灣目前面臨較嚴重的缺水、缺電危機。 更重要的是,這次美國、歐盟、日本相繼興起的半導體產業民族主義,看來勢不可擋,其中最難拿捏的地緣政治變化,更不是單靠台積電可以抗衡的。 我常常說,台灣企業擅長戰術但不擅長戰略。要比戰術,台灣企業肯定可以戰無不克,但說到戰略,我覺得就很難保證一定可以獨善其身了。天佑台灣! 《經濟學人》總評 封面故事 這期的《經濟學人》封面,在深黑的封底前,是英國殿堂級搖滾樂團Pink 一週財經聚焦 一、2月15日,英特爾宣佈Pat Gelsinger接任CEO。 美國半導體巨頭Intel近年來面臨晶片製程落後,PC處理器市場AMD來勢洶洶,顯卡市場被NVIDIA拋在腦後,甚至7奈米製程研發也被延宕。英特爾會有什麼新動作?對台灣護國神山群有什麼影響?全球半導體又會何去何從? 國際媒體相關報導 ●The Economist經濟學人,商業板塊第二篇:《Can Pat Gelsinger turn Intel around?》(Pat Gelsinger能不能反轉Intel);小標:《The giant chipmaker's new boss has his work cut out》(這個晶片巨擘新老闆必須先做減法) ●Bloomberg彭博商業週刊:《Intel Tumbles After New CEO Recommits to Chip Manufacturing 》(英特爾在宣佈重回晶片製造後股價大跌) Gelsinger表示,2023年大部分的晶片將在Intel工廠生產;CFO認為,筆記型電腦的強勁需求將在2021年上半年出現。 ●FT倫敦經金融時報:《The risks from a dash to chip nationalism》(從衝擊到晶片民族主義的風險);小標:《The global shortage has deepened anxieties about national security》(全球短缺,加劇了人們對國家安全的憂慮) 分析解讀 很少企業能夠像今天的台積電一樣享盡光環,它不僅成為地緣政治強權爭取的對象,也成為台灣的護國神山。但對台積電而言,是好是壞、是利是弊,恐怕現在尚無人可說得準。 2月15日,英特爾新任執行長Pat Gelsinger正式上任,外界對於這位曾在Intel效力30年、第一代的CTO紛紛寄予厚望。實際上,Pat Gelsinger能否帶領英特爾重振雄風,也攸關了美國能否守住在半導體領域的創新霸主地位。 我說了好幾次,當我們因為半導體產業短缺而沾沾自喜時,一定要知道,疫情過後,全世界即將迎來的區域化發展以及半導體自主權爭奪戰,正方興未艾。在眼前晶片嚴重短缺之際,英特爾很可能藉機重新形塑自家的潛力,向美國政府強調,該公司扮演著制衡亞洲晶圓代工業者的重要角色,以捍衛國安與美國創新領導地位。我相信,英特爾會尋求擴大製造規模與製造品項,向同業提供晶片產能,甚至尋求解決製程問題。 首先,英特爾可以要求台積電擴大在美製造,因為繼續增加委交給台積電、聯電或三星等亞洲晶圓代工業者的生產,勢必會引發美國商務部、國安機構與貿易組織的關切。如果有人提議,美國政府應該為半導體業者擴張提供補貼,以做為強化美國晶片產能的方式之一,並創造高薪就業機會,那麼美國商務部等機構可能會快速讓英特爾與同業的擴張計畫通關。 在這種狀況下,台積電或三星可能會被迫選擇併購,或在美國建立晶圓廠,藉此平衡在亞洲的產能。 第二,英特爾重振一旦被定位為「對東亞晶片霸權崛起,進行地緣政治的制衡」,則英特爾的先進製程就會得到支持,並想方設法取得成功。這樣一來,可以為那些尋求降低對台積電曝險的公司,擴大在美國本土的晶片生產。即便現在英特爾在很多方面仍不如台積電,但很可能因為美國政府的補貼而成長。 另外,蘋果、亞馬遜、Google、AMD、高通和輝達,都可能為支持提升美國的先進生產能力提供金援,藉此降低對台積電的依賴。一旦這些美國科技大廠達成共識、抱團取暖,對台灣怎麼會沒有影響? 還有,川普在任內把供應鏈武器化,破壞各國間依據商業原則運作的基本信任。但另一方面,各國還有一個更恐怖的發現是:對半導體,他們竟是如此的缺乏。 幾乎所有國家都會被美國一指就掐死,看看中國固然手機生產威風八面、半導體設計看似先進、晶圓代工也已發展十多年,但沒有核心技術與生產能力,還是被美國一掐就死。即使是歐洲、日本這些美國的盟邦,回頭盤點自己手上擁有的半導體技術與製造能力,大概都會打寒顫。 即使是坐擁大部份核心技術、擁有眾多半導體生產能力的美國,也發現最先進的生產能力不在手上,所以歐盟啟動半導體計劃,日本有意找聯電或台積電去投資設廠,中國更是大手筆投資要強化半導體自主能力,避免再被美國「卡脖子」。 未來,不只Apple這種大公司想要自製晶片,包括亞馬遜、Google等也都有類似計畫。無論如何,迄今美國仍在晶片設計上具有主導地位;荷蘭 ASML 則壟斷最好的半導體設備;日本則是關鍵化學、設備主要供應商。台積電必須想辦法鞏固自己的領先地位。 半導體的民族主義以及自主權爭奪戰已經不可避免,美國共和黨籍聯邦眾議院議員 Michael McCaul正與參眾兩院國會議員合作,優先考慮讓《為半導體生產建立有效激勵措施法案(CHIPS for America Act)》剩餘條款盡快通過。去年12月,歐盟17個成員國也簽署了《歐洲處理器和半導體科技計劃聯合聲明》,準備花費1450億歐元,用於半導體研究投資。而中國大陸去年10月發表的五年計畫(至2025年),將提撥1.4兆美元預算,資助包括半導體產業在內的科技業。 此外,台灣IC去年出口1225億美元,佔出口35.5%,成長率22%。但檢視其出口市場,大陸和香港佔61%,成長率近27%,是帶動IC成長的主力,集中度過高是IC產業的風險之一。 其次,去年台灣IC進口623億美元,用於內需和封裝測試後再出口,來源包括大陸、南韓、日本等亞洲國家佔76%,美、歐佔10%。IC進口和出口比值高達50%以上,顯示台灣是亞洲IC產業分工體系的一環,而非全球獨強。 另外,2018年日韓貿易摩擦,日本對南韓就氟化聚醯亞胺、光阻劑、高純度氟化氫三項IC製程關鍵特用化學品出口,取消優惠待遇,造成南韓半導體產業重大困擾。凡此種種,說明了在半導體產業生態體系的構建,台灣仍有許多待努力的重要節點。 在美國壓力之下,台積電已不得不前往亞歷桑納州投資設廠。這可能只是開端,半導體產業未來只會面對更激烈的競爭。 台灣產業本身也存在生態體系強化、研發投入誘因不足、政府科技投入縮減、人才欠缺、下游應用市場過於狹小等問題。鑒於半導體是科技發展和武器的關鍵,美、日、歐、大陸等無不以各種租稅、財政補助等優惠措施,積極促進本土產業發展,未來台灣半導體產業勢將面對艱困挑戰。台積電和半導體產業成為護國神山固是可喜,但懷璧其罪,也可能帶來危機。 二、2月19日,比特幣寫下5萬4182美元新高價位,貨幣總市值正式突破了1兆美元。 如果說美國的GameStop是 2021 年最狂妄的一隻股票,那比特幣就是春節期間最大的驚奇。我們看見一大群小散戶一夕暴富,熱血沸騰的金融大戲,變成只談股價無關價值的多空大激戰。這是金融市場靜悄悄的一場革命,年輕散戶對建制派下了戰帖,對日益擴大的貧富差距發出怒吼,「數位散戶」的力量,勢必將形塑投資市場的新生態,讓傳統金融走向另外一個新境界。 國際媒體相關報導 ●CNBC:《Yes, bitcoin could be the new GameStop》(是的,比特幣可能是新的Gamestop) ●WSJ華爾街日報:《The GameStop Short Squeeze Shows an Ugly Side of the Investing World》( GameStop的賣空,展示了投資世界的醜陋一面);小標:《Short sellers are thick-skinned, but the nasty comments, insults and threats leveled at them feel like political fights, not investing differences.》(看空者通常很強悍,但批評他們的評論、侮辱和威脅,聽起來更像是政治鬥爭,而不是投資看法的差異表述。) ●New York Times紐約時報:《Palantir becomes an unlikely darling of the GameStop crowd》(Palantir成為下一個Gamestop) 分析解讀 春節期間,比特幣仍是全球漲幅最大的資產,就如過去一年一樣。截至2021年2月17日,一枚比特幣的價值,首度漲破51000美元。 也就在2020年3月,即全球疫情暴發之初,比特幣曾經大跌,一枚比特幣的價格最低跌至近3800美元。近11個月過去了,如今比特幣的上漲幅度超過了1200%。更可怕的昰,目前華爾街主流機構似乎認為這個「剛性泡沫」還可以更大。 我個人會把比特幣現象拿來和去年的特斯拉相比擬。為什麼?他們一樣代表新的商業模式,代表充滿想象空間的未來,更重要的是,它們佔據了那塊想象空間的龍頭角色。但比特幣還有另外一層的意義,就像特斯拉對傳統車廠的警示,比特幣可以當做傳統金融業的啓發。 曾經,金融科技Financial teck確實是近年來金融產業許多人在談的話題,但本來大多數金融科技企業正開始啟動,但疫情對於金融科技的發展,一下子起了推波助瀾的功效。 以美國為例,以前很多美國人習慣用支票、去銀行櫃台辦理業務、去保險公司的現場購買保單。但疫情爆發之後,很多人被迫把金融業務轉移到網上進行、實現移動支付等等。相信2021年,還會有大量實質性的金融、保險、投資、資產管理等業務,由傳統金融機構轉向科技化、數位化。 我們先看看2020年美國股市最大的意外事件--GameStop,它的成因包括免費券商平台興起、年輕人大量進入市場。這一年,免手續費券商羅賓漢崛起,羅賓漢以劫富濟貧的英雄命名,迎合當今社會貧富不均的氛圍。打著「奪回華爾街超收的手續費」口號(傳統券商交易一次需 30 美元),並且將金融交易遊戲化,加入許多量化操作模式,入門金額低、不收手續費,吸引大量年輕人加入,使用槓桿交易,才讓散戶大軍成功翻到了避險基金公司。 有人說他們成不了氣候,因為資金有限,我卻不這麼認為。隨著嬰兒潮世代(約40歲-60歲) 年歲已高陸續離世,把財富用遺囑的方式轉移給子女,在十年之內,下一代的財富可望增加兩倍。根據經濟學人估計,到2042年,預計千禧世代將繼承大約22兆美元的財富。 更多的金融企業並沒有做好準備,他們仍然對嬰兒世代的巨額財富虎視眈眈,假如這些資產管理公司希望繼續存在,他們應該盡快轉變思維,而不是繼續嘲笑著千禧世代,否則終有一天,他們會被千禧世代拋棄。 從特斯拉股價一路暴衝到GameStop的炒作過程,就是一種「劫富濟貧」,是一種商業模式的改朝換代。更多的年輕人加入了市場,帶動了更頻繁的交易、更多的槓桿,造就無國界的投資,還有理財書籍的暢銷等。台灣也一樣,年輕人大舉投入量化、高頻率交易,熱門股的當沖比率也高達五成到七成,每家券商開始想方設法拉攏年輕人開戶。 所有這些,都可視為散戶的反撲,也反應出金融市場制度的不合理、定價的荒謬。重要的是,大型金融機構不再能呼風喚雨,天之驕子也有掉進臭水溝的一天。而在此之前,早有許多傳統投資圈認為「荒謬」的事件存在,其一是各國央行大量QE(量化寬鬆),將利率降至零,任由資金氾濫成災;其二,或許是比特幣之類的虛擬貨幣。 當然,我無法鐵口直斷未來會發生什麼事。經過GameStop、特斯拉、比特幣到Palantir,年輕的散戶大軍已經越來越有自信以及戰略;但這些事情也都告訴我們,這個世界錢太多了! 加上社群媒體可以輕易召喚狂熱的群眾,各類槓桿交易越來越方便,他們甚至不為了賺錢,只為了出一口氣,或者支持某一種理念。這次的軋空大戲像是靜悄悄的革命,對建制派下戰帖,對日益擴大的貧富差距發出怒吼,「數位散戶」的力量將形塑投資市場的新生態,傳統金融市場一定要提高警覺。 《經濟學人》總評 封面故事 這期《經濟學人》的封面設計充滿了巧思,整個畫面一眼望去好像是美國國旗,但你仔細看,上面既有風力渦輪發電機,還有著一排排紅色的太陽能發電板、輸電塔以及水力發電機組。上面兩排黑色字體,大字寫的是「America's better future 」(美國的更好未來);小字則是「No carbon and no blackout s」(不再碳排放,也不再斷電)。 《經濟學人》這次共用了六篇文章,嘗試從美國能源市場的改革計劃,帶我們看清楚全球氣候變化危機的迫在眉睫。 確實,美國能源系統的改革規劃,在未來幾個月會提交國會,拜登也表示,他希望在2035年前能夠停止化石燃料的發電以及排放,甚至在2050年之前成功實現碳中和。而美國現在不僅是全球第二大的排放國,還是全球與氣候有關的政策、科技以及未來領導力的可能依據。華盛頓即將展開的規劃議程,將為美國的未來十年,乃至更遠的將來樹立方向。 這場冬季風暴不僅導致了德州的停電,還揭示了美國能源基礎設施的嚴重缺陷。時間比想象還緊迫,氣候變化對人類的影響比想像的大,所以我們必須盡快想辦法應對。 Powered by Firstory Hosting

Intel was still inside many PCs and laptops, but the headlines went to Intel's rivals… Amid the cover of CES, Intel's CEO resigned. Intel's new CEO, Pat Gelsinger doesn't start his new role until February, but he attended an all hands meeting yesterday where he told Intel employees “We have to deliver better products to the PC ecosystem than any possible thing that a lifestyle company in Cupertino [makes]. We have to be that good, in the future.”It's a noble goal, but feels like one of those quotes that could haunt Gelsinger to his grave… Speaking of Apple's M1 Chips… Apple rumour king, Mark Gurman had a raft of Apple product rumours over the weekend, involving said M1 chip Gurman says we can expect to see new M1 based iMacs in the coming months, with smaller bezels and a more streamlined look, based on a more powerful variant of the M1 chip That new chip is also expected in new 14” and 16” Macbook Pros - but for Apple fans the big news is Gurman expects these laptops to reintroduce Magsafe, and ditch the controversial touchbar. Finally, Gurman predicts a new mini Mac Pro and to go with it, a new retina monitor with a more realistic price point, than the current $8k XDR display Mac fans have commented and tweeted that this all sounds “too good to be true”... Your smartwatch knows you have covid before you do Smartwatches that continuously measure users' heart rates, skin temperature and other physiological markers can help spot coronavirus infections days before an individual is diagnosed.Devices like the Apple Watch, Garmin and Fitbit watches can predict whether an individual is positive for COVID-19 even before they are symptomatic or the virus is detectable by tests, according to studies from Mount Sinai Health System in New York. VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger said rival IBM paid too much for Red Hat and its OpenShift Kubernetes platform. He then added that when it comes to Kubernetes his company has better assets. Gelsinger made those stinging comments during a recent investor conference, where he also stated that VMware was raking in nearly $2 billion from its SDN operations. The pointed jab at rival IBM highlights the increasingly competitive nature of the Kubernetes-focused ecosystem that has been central to a number of big financial deals over the past year. IBM paid a company record $34 billion to acquire Red Hat, which has made a name and business for itself in the open source software and growing Kubernetes market. However, VMware itself has also spent billions of dollars on similar properties. That includes its recent $2.8 billion purchase of sister company Pivotal, with both companies operating under the Dell EMC umbrella. VMware has also acquired Kubernetes-focused companies Heptio and Bitnami. Gelsinger noted that those combined assets better position his company in the space and that it accomplished that positioning at around one-tenth of the price of what IBM paid. Content delivery network powerhouse Cloudflare lit up Wall Street with an initial public offering that generated $525 million for the company and gave it a nearly $4 billion valuation. The firm's IPO was initially priced at $12 per share before spiking to $15 per share just ahead of its listing. Investors quickly gobbled up the 35 million shares offered with that interest sending the stock price up an additional 20 percent shortly after its debut. Cloudflare is best known for its CDN services with its IPO paperwork citing support for more than 20 million internet properties. It also has a stake in both cloud and security and said it blocks 44 billion cyberthreats per day. In that filing it also said it competes against companies like Amazon, Cisco, and Oracle. However it also directly competes against CDN firms like Akamai, Limelight, and Fastly. Cloudflare reported $129 million in revenues for the first half of this year, which was a 48-percent increase compared to the first half of 2018.
