The Indonesian government says it is looking into claims one of its officials attempted to bribe and intimidate an RNZ journalist. Kelvin Anthony, who works for RNZ Pacific, was attending the Melanesian Spearhead Group leaders' meeting in Port Vila last month when an official attempted to give him cash at the conclusion of an interview. He says he felt intimidated by the encounter, which came after Indonesian officials had complained they did not like what RNZ had published on West Papua, saying it lacked balance. Anthony spoke to Corin Dann.
The Melanesian Spearhead Group Leaders' Summit is taking place in Vanuatu's capital Port Vila this week. The heads of governments from Vanuatu, Fiji, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu and the FLNKS of New Caledonia are in attendance to discuss issues concerning the Melanesian region. Vanuatu has won UN support to get the International Court of Justice to rule on the Climate Crisis. The UN resolution overnight asks the International Court of Justice to consider a legal ruling that would tell big polluters exactly what consequences they could face if they fail to meet their climate obligations. The call was led by cyclone plagued Vanuatu, which is still under a six month state of emergency after a rare pair of category 4 cyclones pummelled the country in March. Last night, on the cusp of the vote at the UN, locals, and foreign government representatives gathered at a concert in Port Vila. New Zealand's Foreign Affairs Minister Nanaia Mahuta - who landed in the country yesterday with a plane load of cyclone relief supplies - deviated from her schedule to attend the festivities as well. RNZ Pacific reporter Caleb Fotheringham was there.
The Vanuatu region has taken an intense battering from nature this March. Vanuatu was lashed by Cyclone Judy and Cyclone Kevin, two separate tropical cyclones in three days. BloggerAtLarge.com writer Megan Singleton says Vanuatu is used to weather events of this scale and the capital, Port Vila is already back up and running. Megan Singleton says the island of Tanna will need an extra couple of months to recover, as it was quite badly hit. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
An interview with MWT's representative in Vanuatu, Joana Bule about her experience having suffered through two category 4 cyclones in 2 days in Port Vila, Vanuatu.
Vanuatu is in clean up mode after facing twin cyclones last week, with Cyclone Judy and then Cyclone Kevin striking within days of each other. Some parts of the country are still uncontactable after the storm, with fears for people in the southern Tanna island which homes roughly 30,000 people. Dan McGarry is a journalist in the capital, Port Vila. He spoke to Corin Dann.
Vanuatu's been dealt a cruel double-blow, with a second cyclone battering the nation just 24 hours after the first this week. Cyclone Kevin - a category two system - brought further destruction overnight, as gale force winds and heavy rain struck the country. Telecommunications, power and running water are still out in some areas after Severe Tropical Cyclone Judy barrelled through on Wednesday. Dan McGarry is a journalist in the capital Port Vila. He spoke to Kim Hill.
Homes have been damaged and some regions are flooded after Tropical Cyclone Judy barreled over Vanuatu yesterday. The storm was upgraded to a category four cyclone, with winds of up to 230 kilometres per hour. Dan McGarry is a journalist in Port Vila, and says the ferocity of the storm made it unsafe to go outside. McGarry spoke to Corin Dann.

Welcome to Episode #45 of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast! This week, I welcome Nicky Barnes onto the show. She is a yoga teacher from Vanuatu and she's also the co-founder of the leading Yoga Association in Vanuatu. It's donation based and, it has been for 13 years. My conversation with Nicola Barnes, a yoga teacher from Vanuatu was so delightful as we took a deep dive into the world of her yoga association in Vanuatu. And we also discussed how yoga is an art and an act of coming home. I hope that this conversation made you curious about balance and movement and expression, as well as the act of coming home to yourself without pressure without ego, without ambition, just coming home. Tell me more about Nicola Barnes Nicola Barnes started yoga seriously while living in London in the late 1990s. She became a yoga teacher in India at Neyyar Dam Sivinanda Ashram in 2003. Since then, she has taught in the Cayman Islands and in Vanuatu. She is the co-founder of the leading Yoga Association in Vanuatu, which is entirely donation-based and has been for 13 years. All of the yoga teachers in the Vanuatu yoga association volunteer their time. She teaches a mixed Hatha style, which is mostly asana based, but does involve pranayama. She has been teaching yoga for 19 years. The Vanuatu Yoga Association was set up so that yoga in Port Vila would have a sense of community and longevity. It also gives a forum for those who love to share their passion for yoga with others to instruct classes. The Vanuatu Yoga Association aims to support the local community by offering classes that are welcoming and affordable. What to expect in the Yoga In Vanuatu episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast I loved how Nicola highlighted how yoga exists in the real world— it's not a cartoon or a Hollywood creation. It exists in the raw, unexpected, natural way of life and of living. She pointed out how Instagram yoga with perfect hair, lovely beauty, and being picture-perfect isn't how yoga should really be viewed or considered— it's messy, raw, and includes all the hiccups and bumps in life! We also dove into how Nicky, along with two other co-founders, dreamed up the Vanuatu yoga association and decided to make it a nonprofit, volunteer based organization. Nicky expressed that, “It's just been amazing that trusting in the goodness of people and trusting that something that doesn't seem to be commercially logical can work.” For the skimmers - What's in the yoga in Vanuatu episode? Why found a yoga association in Vanuatu Let yoga be a natural evolution, don't push too hard Hollywood-style, glamorous Instagram yoga isn't the messy, raw, yoga of the real world Yoga and kitesurfing: balance, movement, expression The challenges of studio ownership on a small island Connect with Nicola Barnes https://web.facebook.com/PortVilaYoga/?_rdc=1&_rdr https://yoga.vu/ Want more? For centuries, pacific people have traveled across the vast oceans using traditional canoes and other means of transportation. Today hundreds of thousands of people are dependent on sea and shipping services for business, inter-island travel or just the daily commute to get to work or school. Sea transportation is also the only source of income for many in the region like 29 year old Frankie Kaltex who operates a water taxi in Port Vila, Vanuatu, one of the busiest ports in the region.

A special treat* for all Beloved Throners today! I've been staying with my Gran, the esteemed Queen Pat, in Port Vila for the past few days. During a storm yesterday, I was able to sit her down and watch the first two episodes of Game of Thrones with her - she'd never seen it! Afterwards I recorded a special PATcast with her about her thoughts on our crazy show. Please keep in mind it was quite late and Gran was a bit tired, so it's mostly me rambling at her and trying to get her thoughts. But it's reasonably entertaining. Valar Morghulis! *I don't know if it's a treat. It IS a lot of me rambling, so take it as you find it.
