Interviews from the expo area of the Dublin Tech Summit 2022 held in June 2022 at the RDS expo area in Dublin. Although the event had continued in a virtual format, the opportunity to network face-to-face was one that the 8,000 delegates relished. There was a palpable buzz in the exhibitor halls and hospitality spaces as the attendees digested some of the content of the keynote speakers, and looked to foster linkages with potential partners and investors. The weather obliged also which helped showcase the enduring appeal of Dublin as a location for technology events. There was also a strong social dimension to the event with the city centre meet-ups giving delegates the opportunity to network long into the night. There were several interesting Irish start-ups that caught our attention. Averil Power, co-founder of Gist, described the company's technology which helps companies repurpose long-format video. It helps revisit corporate content to increase engagement more fully. At the core of the technology is an AI algorithm which identifies the key points and creates a bespoke video. The company was among those who made it to the last five on the start-up main-stage competition. Power's sense of the DTS was that it did allow a good mix of meeting potential customers and investors. Another Irish start-up was recruitment specialists, Search Talent People. Established in 2019, they focus on tech companies‘ full hiring needs. Business Development manager Skai Morkeliunaite was of the view that AI, Cybersecurity and Automation were the sectors that were showing most promise at present. There was a very strong presence of international exhibitors at the event this year, testimony to its growing reputation on the European tech conference circuit. Among the exhibitors start-ups were to the fore. One such company is TravelPerk, headquartered in Barcelona. Chief Revenue Officer Jean-Christophe Taunay-Bucalo outlined that their technology allows individuals to bypass traditional corporate travel agencies. He was able to confirm that their systems were strongly orientated around corporate compliance; they had done Series D funding and achieved unicorn status – they had been extremely aggressive in acquisitions over Covid and had grown five times. They were also of the view of business travel was changing – people are traveling less than pre-covid but more people are traveling. While the overall travel costs remained the same what was evident was that companies are exchanging office costs for travel costs – bringing them together for team-building purposes rather than the traditional road warrior purposes. He also felt that events such as Dublin Tech Summit are changing considerably with a lot of focus now on networking with more tightly defined teams in attendance than heretofore. Mary-Rose Lyons, from Irish consulting company BrightSpark Consulting was the MC on the Horizon Stage over both days, and as such was well placed to give a reflection on the conference –she was of the view that Dublin was established in its tech-cred and an emerging eco-system. For her own business she has seen a switch from social media specific consulting to a more rounded strategic input to digital strategy. Among the first-time exhibitors this year was Guy Sear, Commercial Director of PayHawk – the first Bulgarian unicorn. This company helps management efficiency visibility and compliance in employee spend. One of the biggest problems remains visibility of spend and whether it's in compliance with policy. Their 3% paypack system was one that offered the potential for paying for itself for some clients. He said Ireland was a market they wanted to get into, and as an exhibitor the event facilitated this. Listen here to interviews with all the above mentioned companies.

A review of the cross-technology event This week there was a spring in the step of folks heading to ‘Dublin Tech Summit' at the RDS centre on Dublin's southside. It was a 2-day affair on the 15th and 16th of June, where face-to-face meetings, networking and tech talks were the order of the day. Dublin Tech Summit 2022 Reviewed The bustle of chatter, talks kicking off and a very full conference space led me to Detectify where Frederico talked about the external security service his company provides. Continuous automation of pre-pentest testing such as port scanning is a valuable service to provide independently of any internal security resources deployed. My journey moved around the busy event hall to Zoom where Harry Mosley, CIO and Matthew Kenny, Systems Engineer, showcased the new smart features on their product. This included PABX integrations and internal optimizations for a better user experience. The range of booths, talks and opportunities to meet folks was impressive indeed. I chatted with some entrepreneurs who requested secrecy around their products in the pre-launch stage noting the venture capital community was well represented at the summit making it an ideal networking opportunity for both parties concerned. The legal industry was also there in the form of Sarah Wilson and her colleagues from Cleaver Fulton Rankin located in Belfast city. Sarah and her legal colleagues are specialists in data compliance and governance in the tech space. The second day started off in a less populist manner but did fill up to a respectable degree where one was wary of getting too close to people in certain parts of the summit. Talks by many companies including Mastercard Foundry (the new design/R&D divisional merger), were in full swing. I visited the Foundry booth and was brought through some projects by James Conway and Stephen Elder. The use of Mastercard apps for making payments and opening up hotel doors based on existing products was an interesting product adaptation that Stephen was working on and immediately useful in my view. James was on the data side using IBM's quantum machine to run advanced algorithms on fraud detection and mapping of fraudulent transactions across Mastercard-enabled networks identifying previously unknown cash points in the journey of the fraudulent transaction. This investigative gap can now be swiftly resolved by quantum computing innovations such as this. I went into the Lenovo booth where Antonia brought me through the complimentary service and solutions innovation from Lenovo allowing Lenovo customers to gain value from this enhanced support solution. My journey then led me to a talk on AI and ‘How humans can co-exist with AI' as a panel discussion led by Laura Ellis. I was heartened by the great point made on how repeatable task elimination gives rise to new job opportunities for those willing to learn new things and take advantage of new opportunities. The second day's afternoon saw me attend talks such as ‘From Startup to Scale up' where experiences were shared by Stephen Crowley of Flipdish and Eileen O'Meara of Stripe. Both leaders commented extensively on the COVID challenges of remote working. This included catchment areas to an office for recruitment, the requirements of leadership based on knowing your people and the prioritization around managing company culture through adverse times. I also stopped off at the ThreatLocker's booth where Eoin McGrath brought me through their scalable agent-based service that materially enhances your fleet's security posture at the application level with their managed security solution. My final stop of the day was with Michal Sukiennik of Airnauts. I chatted with Michal for some time about development challenges in today's web 2.0 world and his company's outsourcing capabilities providing an integrated service that covers the product rather than just part of the project. This is now seen as the new best practice approach to web development of digital...

Maybe it's doing research, maybe it's watching some videos on YouTube, maybe it's listening to some podcasts like this one. But just as long as you can stay inspired, you can make it happen and that's what storytelling to me.

For this meetup, we had 3 guests line up for a panel that talked about their own experiences in leadership and also took questions from the audience.   “Learn fast, make mistakes, then turn around and figure out how it happened as a team to grow from it” “You don't need to know where you are going to be in 5 years, but you need to understand the parts of the role you enjoy and see where could that lead you in the future”   Some of the topics covered in this meetup:   How important it is in a startup to be able to adapt Why being focused on making an impact in your company can be more beneficial than just getting work done How valuable it is to give yourself the confidence to thrive in your own role and take the opportunities that may present themselves The value of picking up different types of leadership traits from different people, as some leadership qualities may not suit you Saying yes to great opportunities and jumping in feet first to try it, and if it doesn't work its a great way to learn Why the hiring strategy is probably the most important thing for upholding or enhancing a good workplace culture How to make sure that the product you are creating is viable and there is a market for it Advice for someone starting out in a sales position How to ensure diversity in the workplace https://youngleaders.tech/meetup-9/   ANDREW PITCHER ZENDESK https://www.linkedin.com/in/andrewpitcher/   Andrew leads and is currently building out the Sales Development business in EMEA at Zendesk from their rapidly expanding EMEA HQ in Dublin.
