Steve Conte became lead guitarist in one legendary band, the New York Dolls, and co-wrote half of his latest album, The Concrete Jangle, with the main singer-songwriter of another one: Andy Partridge of XTC. Conte is a longtime New York working musician who has played with such artists as Paul Simon, Peter Wolf, Phoebe Snow and, in a great story, Chuck Berry. Now he has released two solo albums on Stevie Van Zandt's Wicked Cool label and has two songs vying for the Coolest Song of the World 2024 on Little Steven's Underground Garage. Here he recalls what it was like to join the New York Dolls and to work with David Johansen—and with guitar in hand, he tells how he got connected with Partridge and demonstrates how the two of them wrote some very catchy songs together. On today's show, guitarist and singer/songwriter Steve Conte reminisces with Joseph over all the popular spots in New York City they've each played gigs and provides his assessment about just how much the NYC music scene has changed. Steve also plays a few licks on his guitar, including a full live version of his song (co-written with Andy Partridge) FOURTH OF JULY. GUEST OVERVIEW: Steve Conte is an American musician; guitarist, singer, songwriter, producer & music educator – both on tour and in studios around the world. His most recent album, Bronx Cheer was released on Little Steven Van Zandt's label, Wicked Cool Records in the fall of 2021 to great critical acclaim. The album spawned 5 singles, 3 of which were featured as “Coolest Songs In The World” on the Underground Garage Radio Program. Steve is currently working on a new release for Wicked Cool Records on which he has written 5 of the album's 10 songs with his songwriting hero – the incomparable Andy Partridge of XTC. Besides a rich solo-career, Conte has recently been instrumental in helping some legendary artists like the New York Dolls get their groove back. After 6 years, 4 albums and a never-ending World Tour with the Dolls, he joined up with former Hanoi Rocks front man Michael Monroe as guitarist, songwriter and backing vocalist to release 5 albums of new original material. On the Horns And Halos album (2013 Spinefarm) Conte wrote the lion's share of the songs and it was nominated for “Album Of The Year” by the Finnish “Grammys” as well as The Nordic Music Prize. In addition to playing in the USA, Steve has toured extensively in UK, Holland, Belgium and France with his Netherlands-based band as well as playing solo shows in Spain, Italy, Finland & Sweden. https://stevecontemusic.com/

Steve Conte Live on Game Changers with Vicki Abelson What a great time, as always, when old pal Steve Conte sits down to chat and sing. That voice! Those songs! The stories! Steve played his latest Coolest Song in the World, Fourth of July, co-written with Andy Partridge of XTC, which was a dream come true for Steve and anyone fortunate enough to hear it. He opened the show with that tune, and then almost at the close, after hearing the back story of his admiration, their meeting, growing friendship, and how it bloomed into co-writing 5 of the songs on Steve's upcoming LP coming soon from Little Steven's Wicked Cool Records, and the particulars of this one in particular, after a bit of coaxing, we got to hear it again, with new meaning and appreciation. It's not oft such an opportunity presents. Worthy. And rockin' fun! Steve, who started out on drums, courtesy of his obsession with The Beatles, and Ringo, had a couple of great tales about that, how he switched to guitar, bouncing brother John to bass, exactly where his gift belonged, Steve's first album, first concert, and how that led to his greatest onstage experience. No spoilers here… Nor to his second, third, well, his top five. Suffice it to say, he covered playing with Chuck Berry, singing with Paul Simon and Art Garfunkle, the Everly Brothers, opening for Alice Cooper, getting huge gigs without auditions… joining The New York Dolls, and Michael Monroe, whom after 13 years, he still tours with today, being produced by Todd Rundgren… and the songs that keep pouring out of him, many of which have garnered Coolest Song in the World on Little Steven's Underground Garage. Steve Conte is one of the coolest guys in the world, with one of the greatest rock voices I've ever heard. Steve was a rotating regular at every club I booked and was part of my After Midnight Rock Jam for years. I just can't get enough. Fortunately, I don't have to, and neither do you. We talk to Steve Conte – Guitarist, Singer and Songwriter. Since being bitten hard by the music bug after hearing The Beatles' Revolver album as a young boy, Steve Conte would be drawn to New York City and soon earn a reputation as a world class guitarist and songwriter. His talents would attract the likes of Paul Simon, The New York Dolls, Michael Monroe and even rock pioneer Chuck Berry who all make up just a small list of names on Steve Conte's ever growing rock resume! We talk about a journey that forges through the 80s and beyond as Steve experiences the big money record deals, MTV video shoots and strangely, many call backs to experiences from his younger days which would materialise into new opportunities many years down the line.   This episode is brought to you by our friends Dead Skull Coffee. https://deadskullcoffee.co.uk/discount/STV Please visit The Straight To Video Patreon Page to find out how you can help grow this show. https://www.patreon.com/stvpod

We had the pleasure of interviewing Steve Conte  over Zoom video!  New York City guitarist, singer and songwriter Steve Conte has found the way back to center stage with his first solo album in five years, the attitude-infused Bronx Cheer, out now on Wicked Cool Records.Long known for his memorable guitar work as a member of New York Dolls, as well as former Hanoi Rocks frontman Michael Monroe's band (with whom he still performs), Steve found international fame in recent years via his collaborations with Japanese composer and artist Yoko Kanno on the soundtracks to several hit anime series, including Cowboy Bebop. The core of Bronx Cheer consists of Steve on guitar and vocals with bass by his brother John Conte (Southside Johnny & The Jukes, David Bowie, Ian Hunter) and the renowned Charley Drayton (Keith Richards, Iggy Pop, The Replacements) on drums.Conte produced the album with Andrew Hollander, who in addition to work with Indie bands like White Rabbits has also composed and/or produced with Pop stalwarts like The Chainsmokers and Carly Rae Jepsen.Raised in a musical family – Steve's mother Rosemary Conte is a noted NY/NJ jazz singer – Steve started spending time in New York City as a kid, his father bringing him to his first Madison Square Garden concert, by none other than Chuck Berry. Some years later, Conte found himself playing an entire show onstage in Berry's band. His own music first gained notice when his band Company Of Wolves signed to Mercury Records, releasing a self-titled album on the label in 1990. Over the years he's also worked with Peter Wolf, Eric Burdon of The Animals, Willy DeVille, Billy Squier, Willie Nile, Maceo Parker, and even been Paul Simon's tour rehearsal vocal stand-in.Conte first met Wicked Cool founder Stevie Van Zandt when the Dolls played Van Zandt's Underground Garage Festival in 2004.We want to hear from you! There aren't too many people who rock like my old pal, Steve Conte. This boy sings his ass off, and plays, like hell. In the best possible way. In town for Samantha’s graduation (surreal and fabulous), we were Live from New York. From my hotel room. Where the room was so cramped, and the hotel so unaccommodating, they wouldn’t loan me a second chair, thus the interview from my bed. Not as obscene as it sounds, or looks, Harry and Samantha were a few feet away. Steve opened the BROADcast with his OK DJ, a Coolest Song in the World on Little Steven’s Underground Garage… one of three of Steve’s solo work to earn that distinction. He also sang his Gimme Gimme Rockaway, also in the top five for the year, his Somebody’s Gonna Get Their Head Kicked in Tonight, was beaten only by Springsteen for the top spot of the year. Steve sang and played with such passion and gusto, the kids and I were waiting for the front desk to call, or send someone to bang on the door to tell us to shut the fuck up… it didn’t happen, even through rousing renditions of Maggie May and Mercedes Benz. Although, at breakfast, Samantha and I overheard someone say they thought Rod Stewart was in the room next to them. Steve told great stories of Chuck Berry, David Johansen, Phoebe Snow, Paul Simon, Ringo, and so much more about the daze! It was all great fun, and oh, so sweet to see the rocker turn soft when speaking of his boys. RockBoy turned dad, suits him, but in no way softens his rocker edge. Steve and his bass-playing brother, John, played every venue I booked through the years. Loved this reunion… sharing the time, and, my bed. *coughs* Steve Conte on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson Wed, 5/22/19, 7 pm PT/ 10 pm ET With Harry Abelson Live on The Facebook http://bit.ly/2y47ZCi All BROADcasts, as podcasts, also available on iTunes apple.co/2dj8ld3 Soundcloud http://bit.ly/2hktWoS Stitcher bit.ly/2h3R1fl tunein bit.ly/2gGeItj This week's BROADcast is brought to you by Rick Smolke of Quik Impressions, the best printers, printing, the best people people-ing. quikimpressions.com And, Nicole Venables of Ruby Begonia Hair Studio Beauty and Products for tresses like the stars she coifs, and regular peoples, like me. Recorded some weeks ago, I held on to this gem, not knowing why... until Saturday, when Chuck Berry passed. Old pal, Steve Conte, who's got one of the greatest rock voices of all time (he was Paul Simon's vocal stand-in for years) has played with just about everyone throughout his career, has a classic Berry story, which he shares here. Time has come today. Steve’s first road gig, was touring with Blood Sweat & Tears in the mid-80s, right around the time I began booking him on Bleecker Street in NY. From there Steve played with J. Geils Band frontman Peter Wolf, the beforementioned Chuck Berry, toured with Billy Squier, Willy Deville, Eric Burdon, was a member of reformed New York Dolls and has shared the stage with an innumerable number of his heroes from Sam Moore, to Springsteen. Steve’s been writing for, recording and touring with former Hanoi Rocks frontman Michael Monroe for the past six years, supporting Guns & Roses, The Foo Fighters and Motorhead. Steve's solo debut, The Steve Conte NYC Album, included a tune, OK DJ, which earned him the #2 Coolest Song of the Year, behind Bruce Springsteen, on Little Steven's Underground Garage... members of the Foo Fighters, Alice Cooper, Mott The Hoople, The Wallflowers, , Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes, to name a few, joined Steve on the album. But, it’s Steve’s own "covers" album, International Cover-Up. currently enjoying much airplay on Little Steven's Underground Garage and the opening track, "Somebody's Gonna Get Their Head Kicked In Tonight" which was voted #5 Coolest Song Of The Year, behind The Monkees and Ian Hunter, which signals what will no doubt be the solo recognition he’s long deserved. Check it. Check him. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJTHWDgHYgI It's thrilling to see this day come for one of my all-time favorite rockers. It's been a lotta years. So fun to sit down and catch up. “In some ways, Steve Conte is the quintessential rock and roll musician. He lives in New York City , has played with everyone from the New York Dolls to the late Willy DeVille, released his own work, and is an unabashed admirer of rock and roll in all its many forms and genres. The latter fact is made completely obvious by the choice of material on his latest CD, International Cover Up. As a 13 year old live performer, Steve Conte looked to The Rolling Stones, The J. Geils Band, Black Oak Arkansas, The Beatles & Jimi Hendrix for both musical inspiration and how to give “good show”. Cut to 2016 – Conte releases his “COVERS” album featuring many of the songs he & his band have played on tour – and captures that LIVE spirit in the recordings! The album features songs written and/or recorded by Eddie Cochran, Willy/Mink DeVille, Tom Waits/Ramones, John Lennon, Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac and Jason And The Scorchers – all delivered in pure Conte-style. In addition to playing original songs from his studio albums on tour, Steve would always add a few well-chosen covers. Conte says: “This album contains some of my favorite songs to play live; road-tested in Europe with my band, The Crazy Truth International. I kept the album production sparse to showcase the band’s live energy. All songs were recorded live, in a few takes. Most guitar solos were played live.  ”INTERNATIONAL COVER-UP was largely recorded at Labtones Studio in Dordrecht, The Netherlands by Wilco Minderhoud & Jasper van Dorp. It features 6 studio recordings with Conte’s European version of The Crazy Truth – plus a pair of solo acoustic tracks recorded in New York City; one in his own Manhattan studio, The Joint NYC and the other recorded live on renowned record producer, Steve Lillywhite’s program for East Village Radio, The Lillywhite Sessions.

About "STEVE CONTE NYC" Steve Conte has been one busy musician over the past few years. After leaving New York Dolls in 2010 he joined up with former Hanoi Rocks front man Michael Monroe as guitarist, songwriter and backing vocalist to release 3 albums, the most recent of which – Horns And Halos, 2013 Spinefarm Records – he wrote the lion’s share of the songs for (it’s already been nominated for “Album Of The Year” by the Finnish Grammys and The Nordic Music Prize). In the summer of 2011, in between touring with Monroe he began work on what was to be his first official solo album, naming the project “Steve Conte NYC”.And now in 2014, after years of making records with others, NYC guitarist/singer/songwriter Steve Conte has stepped out on his own to release The Steve Conte NYC Album. His first official solo record delivers all the guitar, vocal and songwriting skills you know from his previous bands; Steve Conte & The Crazy Truth, Crown Jewels, The Contes and Company Of Wolves. And that “bunch of friends” includes some serious talent. Joining Steve are members of Foo Fighters, The Wildhearts, New York Dolls, Ryan Adams & The Cardinals, Hanoi Rocks, Georgia Satellites, Alice Cooper, Mink DeVille, Hellacopters, The Urban Voodoo Machine, Mott The Hoople, Backyard Babies, The Wallflowers, Company Of Wolves, Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes, and players from the bands of Ian Hunter, John Mellencamp, Roseanne Cash and Bruce Springsteen. The new album was mixed and mastered by Niko Bolas (Neil Young, Keith Richards) and Richard Dodd (Tom Petty, Counting Crows), respectively – the same team who did the 2009 release, Steve Conte & The Crazy Truth. http://stevecontenyc.com

Join us for another edition of the Indie Cafe with Spencer Drate  with special cohost Jimmy McElligott!Steve Conte may be best known as the guitarist with New York Dolls, Willy DeVille, Michael Monroe and Company Of Wolves - or perhaps as the singer with Paul Simon, Yoko Kanno, Crown Jewels and The Contes. The bottom line is, Conte is no slouch - as a musician or a rock & roller. Shortly after his band "Steve Conte & The Crazy Truth" released their critically acclaimed debut album Conte went on tour in the USA and Europe, sharing stages with artists like Nashville P*ssy, Urban Voodoo Machine & Flamenco guitar legend Raimundo Amador. Working between records & tours as lead guitarist/backing singer and co-songwriter with the legendary New York Dolls, Conte produced his band's debut, a scorching 11 song rock & roll disc called simply "STEVE CONTE & THE CRAZY TRUTH" which features a guest performance by Dolls front man David Johansen on harmonica. He is currently working on his first solo project, The Steve Conte NYC Album featuring members of Foo Fighters, The Wildhearts, New York Dolls, Ryan Adams & The Cardinals, Hanoi Rocks, Georgia Satellites, Alice Cooper, Mink DeVille, Hellacopters, The Urban Voodoo Machine, Mott The Hoople, Backyard Babies, The Wallflowers, Company Of Wolves, Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes, Ian Hunter, John Mellencamp, Bruce Springsteen and Patti Smith.
