Episode 76: Cindy Gersch & Manifest: 7 Steps to Living Your Best Life by Roxie Nafousi For this conversation, Cindy, an Entrepreneur and Rare Disease Advocate, walks me through how her life changed dramatically when she was diagnosed with Fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD) in 2018. Cindy shares that she lost almost everything -- her husband, her running, her job, most of her friends -- she felt made her who she was at that point -- her identity. A close brush with death woke her up, though, showing her she could be a healthy person living with a disease instead of an unhealthy person living with a disease. She made that intentional choice and moved forward, doing what she does best -- telling stories. Having studied broadcast journalism and spent years as reporter -- a natural storyteller -- she founded her own company and later became an advocate for those living with FMD. It was through that advocacy path of her journey that she realized her purpose had put her on a stronger path than she might have otherwise experienced had she never gone through her painful health challenges. Tough days, tough experiences -- how do they change us and what do we get out of them? Everything happens for a reason. It's up to us to explore and understand what that reason may be, no matter how painful, no matter how ugly those experiences are. Purpose has almost become cliché, brought up so often that with each mention it loses some meaning. I recently had a conversation with college business students, sharing with them that they would know when they met theirs. That it's not the same path for everyone -- but they would know it. And that it fell on them, if they wanted to find it, to stay curious and hungry enough to keep exploring. Don't underestimate the power of purpose, that insatiable personal fire, fuel, and driver. Today we are talking about What Your Inner Critic Sounds Like and How to Get it to Shut Up (Based on the work from Playing Big by Tara Mohr).Some deep things we cover:Inner Critics are like buttholes.  We've all got one!Inner Critics are the Risk Aversion Department of your brain.Inner Critics are more concerned with safety than truth: They'll tell you anything to keep you safe from emotional risk.What does the Inner Critic sound like?Harsh, rude and mean.Binary: Black and white thinking. What it means to be a mom on purpose - and it is not about having happy, obedient kids. It is actually about being a mom on purpose when our kids are NOT happy or obedient, or when life feels hard and we aren't feeling happy.  Dealing with Automatic Negative Thoughts Coming off a couple of weeks of feeling like I was hitting a wall and spiralling to all the things that are wrong in my life  Our brain is wired to find problems so we can keep ourselves safe and protect ourselves from 'problems' We are the ones that need to talk back to our brains and tell ourselves what is true   Mindfulness as a mother Mindfulness isn't always beautiful and lovely. We need to be mindful of the things that feel not so lovely in our lives. It is important to be mindful of the stories we tell ourselves because we act out, show up from those thoughts and how they make us feel When we show up from frustration, resent, victimhood and then our outcome is always disconnection and more helplessness and frustration.    Our two selves We have the self that we ARE (what we are doing) vs the self we want to be (our ideal self) Our work is to love us for where we ARE while moving towards our ideal with compassion and love.    Led by emotions or led by intention Often we let our emotions run the show - rather than being led by stress and frustration and anxiety, we need to be led by our personal values.  Knowing our personal values means we know WHO we want to be and what is important to our core - in this season of life.  It is also about bringing the work back to what we DO have total control of - ourselves.    Obedient Happy Kids We ask for obedience and happiness in our kids It makes it easier when our kids are happy and well-behaved, but is it what we should be fighting for? We want obedience, plus gratitude, plus happiness, plus agreeability, etc.  Consider how reasonable it is to expect all of these things from our kids, and see how we might not be good models of all we tell them we need to be.  Kids learn by seeing what we DO more than they will ever listen to what we SAY We need to be parents who DO the work on ourselves so they can learn by watching us tackle emotional intelligence, coping and contentment.    We want our family to be happy (all the time) What are we seeking when we want everyone to be happy all the time?  When people around us are happy, it is easy. It is comfortable (a Type 9 mode for sure) I have been the Manager of Happy, trying to make sure everyone was following the happy plan. It caused a lot of anxiety and strife in my life.  What is really happening is that we scramble for control when we don't feel capable. When we don't feel capable, we focus on CONTROL instead BUT we don't have control over all these peoples. Welcome back to the Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning podcast, episode #101, where we will review highlights from the past 100 episodes, that began in June 2019, with a behind the scenes lens, where we will take a look at the results created from this podcast, with the goal to inspire listeners to not just implement the ideas offered in each episode, but to think about what Horacio Sanchez from EPISODE #74 reminded me this week, of “the impact possible when you have an idea, nurture it, and watch it grow.” (Horacio Sanchez, EPISODE #74[i]).My name is Andrea Samadi, and if you haven’t met me yet, I’m a former educator who created this podcast to bring the most current neuroscience research, along with high performing experts who have risen to the top of their field, with specific strategies or ideas that you can implement immediately, whether you are an educator, or working in the corporate space, to take your results to the next level. Before we get to the episode, and the highlights learned from our guests, I want to share some of the unexpected results that have come as a byproduct of this podcast to perhaps light a spark under anyone who might be thinking of new ways to create brand awareness, or market their business in 2021. If you have been thinking of ways that you can extend your voice, message and reach, I highly recommend this mode of delivery. We wouldn’t exist without the guests who offer their time, expertise, and strategies designed to help our listeners (in over 132 countries) who tune in on a regular basis and take the ideas offered to make an impact locally in their schools, communities, businesses and workplaces. I appreciate the feedback and messages received via social media and email and look forward to the next 100 episodes. As long as there is still growth, I will continue to produce new episodes.So Here are 3 Lessons Learned Looking Back at the 100 Episodes.LESSON 1: WHEN THERE’S A NEED, CAN YOU PUT A SPIN ON IT?I saw a serious need in the area of social and emotional learning that was being implemented in schools around the country and the world, and many educators didn’t know the best way to begin their implementation.  I thought it would be a good place to gather “best practices” from experts around the world to offer their ideas that we could all learn from and apply to our own lives.But I knew I needed a bigger idea than just a podcast about social emotional learning in our schools, or emotional intelligence training in our workplaces. Too many people were already doing this. But not that many people were teaching the basics of practical neuroscience as it relates to this topic. The idea to combine neuroscience and social/emotional learning came with the thought that “success in life, and in college and career specifically, relies on student’s cognitive, (the core skills your brain uses to think, read, remember, and pay attention) social and interpersonal skills, (including the ability to navigate through social situations, resolve conflicts, show respect towards others, self-advocate and learn how to work on a team with others) and emotional development (including the ability to recognize and manage one’s emotions, demonstrate empathy for others and cope with stress).” In the corporate world, these skills aren’t new, but they are “newly important” and of high urgency to develop in our future generations. I’ve mentioned this quote before but think it’s important enough to repeat. A recent survey showed that 58 percent of employers say college graduates aren’t adequately prepared for today’s workforce, and those employers noted a particular gap in social and emotional skills. This is where our goal with this podcast began—to close this gap by exploring six social and emotional learning competencies as a springboard for discussion and tie in how an understanding of our brain can facilitate these strategies. AHA! MOMENT with LESSON 1That’s really how I took the need, put a spin on it, and came up with the title Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning in 2016 (3 years before launching the podcast) when I first began presenting on this topic. This title drew the session on the introduction to practical neuroscience to fill up with standing room only, at the YRDSB Quest Conference, in Toronto, Canada. This was my first presentation on the topic, and I knew at that moment that there was a serious interest in this topic.Back then, I was working one on one with one of the leading neuroscience researchers in the country, Mark Robert Waldman, and he had just finished writing his book Neurowisdom: The New Brain Science of Money, Happiness and Success[ii], When he shared his research with me, I saw how practical neuroscience could help people to gain a deeper understanding of how to create change from the brain level and impact their social and emotional thinking and began to write the outline for the vision I saw. I also found Dr. Lori Desautels this year, who is now a good friend and supporter of our work.This was how we took a need and put a spin on it. The rest is history.LESSON 2: THINK IMPACT vs INCOME: GIVER’S GAINAfter the first few months of releasing episodes, I heard from so many people who wanted to know “how did you launch this idea,” and asked about some best practices as they began thinking of ways to replicate the results that inevitably come when you put in consistent daily effort that turns into weekly and then monthly effort until it’s no longer effort, but what you do every day, habitually. If you want to know if launching a podcast would work for you, message me and I can send you some ideas on how to get started, but my first tip would be that you should pick a topic that you love, something that you won’t mind putting in the time and effort to learn more about, as this is what you will be immersed in on a daily basis.I heard a few times “How do you make money with a podcast?” and that’s a great question and why I wanted the second lesson to focus on the impact you will have, not the income. When you have enough listeners, you can earn money from sponsorships and ads, but the key is to use the podcast as a tool to drive people to your programs and services. Doors will start to open for you in ways that you never imagined. I heard Max Lugavere (an American television personality and health and wellness writer) talking about these incredible types of results at about the 2-year mark of his podcast on Dhru Purohit’s Broken Brain Podcast[iii]. The income will come once you put your focus on service and helping others to achieve their goals.This is exactly the same concept as writing a book. Most people who dream of writing a book, think that it will take off like the Harry Potter Series, and they will be set, riding off into the sunset as a millionaire. The truth is that most authors never sell more than a few hundred copies of their books, and for it to become a best seller, it should reach 10,000 copies sold in a week. This is easier to do when selling larger volumes (like to schools or organizations that want your book) but not easy at all to do when selling books one at a time, relying on Amazon as your distribution service. Authors know that books, like a podcast, are just a tool to get your message out there. Since I have released content both ways, I can say from experience that putting your best content out into the world, for FREE, with the idea of helping people, will yield better results than thinking of selling your ideas before anyone even knows who you are.AHA! MOMENT with LESSON 2This podcast was actually originally going to be an educational course, written for a publisher, but a turn of events had me decide to release this content in the form of a podcast for FREE, to be used by anyone who needed these resources. What was interesting is that when I put a focus on the IMPACT I wanted to create, rather than the INCOME it would give me back in return, something magical happened. Max Lugavere mentioned it happened for him at the 2-year mark, and I would have to say it happened for me around the 100th episode mark after just a year and seven months. The opportunities came disguised as consistent, daily, effort and work.LESSON 3: MASTER PROLIFIC QUALITY OUTPUT (PQO).I heard this statement for years, until this experience made me finally understand it. Brendon Burchard, the author of the book High Performance Habits talks about how “High performers have mastered the art of prolific quality output (PQO). They produce more high-quality output than their peers over the long term, and that is how they become more effective, better known, more remembered. They aim their attention and consistent efforts toward PQO and minimize any distractions (including opportunities) that would steal them away from their craft” (Burchard, 2017[iv]).  Over the years, I never really understood what PQO meant. I listened to Brendon explain it a few times, and he would give the example of “Beyonce, who puts out hit after hit, or Ralph Lauren who creates luxury and designer product after product, or even Seth Godin who creates blog post after blog post.” There’s also the WakeUpIt’sDayOne Blog who explains PQO as it relates to athletes as “the type of things you typically don’t see an immediate reward with or have to repeat on a daily basis. Think about Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Lebron James, Tom Brady – the greatest athletes of all time. When you research them and understand how they became who they are today, all you ever read is that they focused on the fundamental things that improved their overall physical and mental skills[v]” their PQO—and I would add consistently, on a daily basis.AHA! MOMENT with LESSON 3Then I thought, what is my PQO? What is my output? What am I creating day in and day out? I’ve always been creating content, but it hit me after I had been producing episodes consistently for a year, that my PQO was the podcast episodes. I had created a certain standard with each episode that included the fact that each one had to be my best effort. If I wasn’t ready to interview someone, or had not researched enough, I would not produce the episode until it hit that standard.I also saw the importance of creating a video interview where I could edit in images and text to explain what the person I was interviewing was talking about. Many times, the concepts discussed are difficult to understand with words alone, so this became another standard. The final standard was that each interview had to be produced and released either that same day, or no longer than 2 days after. Waiting too long in production destroys the momentum created by the interview, so this meant many times that editing went into the night and researching early morning and weekends. Many content producers outsource their video or audio editing and production, but to date, each of the episodes have been produced and edited by yours truly. We will see what happens with this over the next 100 episodes.If you want to make an impact that goes beyond what your mind can imagine, a global impact, you need to have mastered Prolific Quality Output. Do YOU know what YOUR PQO is?Now that we have looked at some of the results created from this podcast, that really were unexpected, this episode will take a closer look at some lessons learned from the speakers along the way, as they relate to the 6 social and emotional competencies and how we tied in a connection to practical neuroscience for improved productivity and results.After each interview, I brainstormed the most important points learned with my husband, since he is also in the field of education. He always asks “what did you learn from this speaker” and there’s always 2-5 AHA points that definitely surprised me. I love making connections between the speakers and mapping out what each one says to other episodes. We really are connected, and what one person says, connects to what someone else will say in a later episode.  I’m always looking for ways to take knowledge and make it applicable for anyone who is willing to apply it and use it.Just a note: Even though I had a written outline for the podcast, it did take a turn towards health and wellness close to the end of 2020, which I think was important and necessary. I will pull out examples used from our speakers in the following areas:EXPERTS WHO:Demonstrate Practical Neuroscience to Improve ResultsDemonstrate the Social and Emotional Learning Competencies (Mindset, Self-Regulation, Self-Awareness, Social Awareness, Relationship Skills, and Decision-Making).Explain SEL in the EDUCATIONAL SETTINGAre Involved with PHYSICAL HEALTH, WELLNESS AND NUTRITIONLESSONS LEARNED FROM PRACTICAL NEUROSCIENCETHE POWER IN LEARNING ABOUT HOW OUR AMAZING BRAINS WORK: This area is where I spent the most time on the podcast, making sure we had a variety of experts, many who are well known with their books and research, to make a case for the importance of learning the basics of neuroscience to improve our productivity and results.Whether it was tips from 15-year-old Chloe Amen on how you can “Change Your Brain and Change Your Grades,” neuroscientist Friederike Fabritius on ways to “Achieve Peak Performance,” Dr. John Medina on his “Brain Rules” or Dr. Lori Desautels on the power of implementing neuroscience in today’s schools, the one person who tied everything together was Dr. Mary Helen Immordino-Yang with her research that shows “The Brain Basis for Integrated Social, Emotional, and Academic Development.” Her work shows how emotions and social relationships drive learning, bringing the entire podcast full circle as Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning. I saw the importance of these 2 topics, and Mary Helen can prove why they are so important, with her work at the University of SCA in her Center for Affective Neuroscience, Development, Learning and Education (CANDLE LAB).  We will continue to bring more lessons that tie practical neuroscience to social, emotional and academic development in our future episodes as this really is the future of education. What was interesting to note in this area was that EPISODE #68: Neuroscience of Personal Change with Stephen R Covey’s “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” was the #1 most downloaded EPISODE with over 1100 downloads, showing me that people want to make this connection linking neuroscience to success and of the POWER IN LEARNING ABOUT HOW OUR AMAZING BRAINS WORK.LESSONS LEARNED FROM THE 6 SEL COMPETENCIES SEL COMPETENCY: MINDSET“A great attitude does more than turn on the lights in our worlds, it seems to magically connect us to all sorts of serendipitous opportunities that were somehow absent before the change.” Earl Nightingale, author of Think and Grow Rich Frank Shankwitz, from EPISODE #40 has modeled what happens when you keep a good mental mindset, for the course of his life. So much so, that they made a movie about his life, called Wish Man, that is based on Frank’s life story (he was a motorcycle cop in Arizona who was haunted by the traumatic separation from his father when he was a boy. After surviving a near-fatal accident, he finds hope with a terminally ill boy, who reunites him with his father. To honor this boy, Frank creates the Make a Wish Foundation, and continues to live a life of honor every day. Nothing can tear this man down. Practice must be focused, determined, and in the environment where there’s feedback.” Malcolm GladwellDr. John Dunlosky from EPISODE #37 started this topic off with his years of research that showed that “deliberate practice” was one of the most effective learning strategies, vs cramming for a test. My first guest speaker was my husband, Majid Samadi, who always is there to offer ideas, suggestions and support with all of my projects, so of course when I needed to interview someone to launch this idea, I asked him to be my first guest. If you go back to EPISODE #1 that covers “The Why Behind Launching an SEL or Emotional Intelligence Program in Your School or Workplace” you will hear me interview him on his thoughts, from the point of view of someone who spends most of his time, working in schools across the country, as the Regional Vice President of Sales for an Educational Publishing Company. This interview happened 5 minutes after he walked in the door after getting off a flight, I think from LA, and he put his suit jacket on my desk, and I handed him a sheet of questions and said “Answer these and talk into the mic.” I’m sure he had been working since early that morning, and it was well into the evening when we recorded this, but he did it, without rehearsing his answers, or spending time preparing. We launched the podcast when we weren’t 100% ready because if we didn’t, I’m sure I would still be spending my days planning. Take action, even when you aren’t ready.PAY ATTENTION TO EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE: SMALL DETAILS CAN LEAD TO BIG DISCOVERIES AND RELATIONSHIPS THAT LAST My second interview was with educator, Ron Hall, from Valley Day School (who I found from an article I saw through Linkedin, and reached out to him hoping he would say yes to being a guest on the show). He agreed, and we have remained in contact ever since. Something funny to mention is that I had just started using Zoom for these interviews, a year before everyone would be using Zoom, and I hadn’t mastered the audio yet. There was a setting on my end that I needed to fix, and finally figured it out, but I’ll never forget the stress of not being able to hear my first guest for a good 30 minutes (could have been longer) as he tried everything on his end to fix the audio, that we finally figured out was on my end. Once we figured it all out, Ron spoke about how he launched neuroscience into his school with one of his major influencers being an author and speaker named Horacio Sanchez. When I created the video for Ron’s interview, I added an image of Horacio as he explained his story. This became important a year later, when I was introduced to Horacio Sanchez from Corwin Press Publishers for Episode #74. With each person you meet, whether in your life, or work, it’s important to pay attention to small details that can lead to something important to you later on. Always develop and maintain relationships as you never know how that person could be of assistance to you, or you to them, at some point in the future.  I’m forever grateful for Ron Hall being my first guest, for staying in touch with me, and for the introduction to Horacio Sanchez, who I’m working with now on another project. GRATEFUL FOR BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS THAT LAST.KEEP LEARNING AND DON’T GET IN YOUR OWN WAY: One of my early interviews was with Greg Wolcott, and assistant superintendent from Chicago, and the author the book Significant 72[vii]. I had been following Greg’s work since I heard him on an SEL webinar in 2016, where he explained how he was building relationships in schools across the country. Greg quickly became an incredible supporter of the podcast after our interview and referred me to many other guests. We became friends, and kept in touch as each episode was released, he would let me know how useful the information was for the educators he was working with, as he brainstormed the ways that the episodes were helping him. This gave me belief in the content, as I saw it being applied, and made me realize that it was crazy that I was nervous interviewing Greg, who would become an incredible support, leading me to step out of my own way, and into a path of greater opportunity down the line. Reminding me to KEEP LEARNING AND DON’T GET IN YOUR OWN WAY!LESSONS LEARNED FROM HEALTH/NUTRITIONWhen I launched this podcast, I had no idea I was going to even go in the direction of health, wellbeing and nutrition. It just happened. Health is my #1 value, and something I put an incredible amount of time towards, so it wasn’t a surprise to me that when the Pandemic hit our world, I saw the importance of interviewing people who were putting a focus on their physical health as well as their mental health and well-being.I’ve always stayed close to my trainer, Kelly Schmidt, from episode #51, but when I watched a documentary on the health staples that were shown to prevent Alzheimer’s Disease, I decided that I needed to expand what I knew in this area. I took the 5 health staples and began looking for people I could contact who were experts in each of these areas. I met Luke DePron on Linkedin, who connected me to Dr. Stickler, and Momo Vuyisich. I reached out to Shane Creado from Dr. Daniel Amen’s Clinics, leading us to get our brain scans, learn more about the importance of sleep and finally, reached out to Jason Wittrock on Instagram, after his videos had inspired me to make changes with my diet a few years back.This set of interviews led me to moderate Podbean’s Wellness Week with Dr. Carolyn Leaf and John Kim, who you bet I am working on getting on the podcast for 2021.I hope you have enjoyed this review of our first 100 EPISODES. The Brainy Business | Understanding the Psychology of Why People Buy | Behavioral Economics

Happy Thanksgiving! This episode is coming out the day after Thanksgiving, also known as Black Friday – a day of crazy deals and holiday shopping (which I have written a few articles about recently on my Inc column) including, Why Black Friday Is the Perfect Holiday Sale According to Neuroscience, Why Year End Is Actually a Bad Time to Send Gifts to Clients, and Why Offering a Deal at the Holidays Isn’t Right for Every Business and Should Always Be Done Thoughtfully. Last year at this time, episode 23 was all about reciprocity and the benefits that come from giving gifts. While today’s episode is about gratefulness, there is a reason I brought up last year’s reciprocity episode to kick us off today. Gratefulness and reciprocity have an important thing in common…a tie that can bond them together…which is a feeling of happiness and joy.  Doing things for others, giving things away, can help you to feel happier. And, as you learned in that episode on reciprocity, people want to give something in return; they can feel good from receiving AND from giving. It creates a nice virtuous cycle that I like to extend beyond the holiday season…though this is the perfect time of year to talk about this sort of thing. Reciprocity is the act of helping someone else to be a little happier. Giving away things, even in business, needs to be genuinely about that thing and not what you will get back. [04:17] Giving away things, even in business, needs to be genuinely about that thing and not what you will get back. [05:13] Dan Gilbert shares what really makes us happy in his TED Talk. He found our brains systematically misjudge what will make us happy.  [06:29] Studies found that a year after winning the lottery or becoming a paraplegic people had the same happiness levels.  [07:11] People don't know what will make them happy. One of the most important things the human brain does is allow us to synthesize the future. [07:55] Natural happiness is a product of getting what you want. Synthetic happiness is what we get when we DON’T get what we wanted. [08:35] Synthetic happiness – not getting what you want but still being happy about where you are – is just as enduring and every bit as real to the brain as if you got exactly what you wanted (or thought you wanted). [08:57] We really and truly do create our own reality, and understanding how your brain looks at these situations can help you to be happier through a filter of gratitude. [10:30] Our brains reinforce our decisions.  [11:27] You can be grateful and appreciate things and have them make you happier even if you don’t remember going through the process before. [11:55] There is such a thing as too much choice. “Freedom to choose is the opposite of happiness.”  [14:31] Not getting what you want can make you just as happy – or happier – than if you had gotten what you set out for. Synthesized happiness is the same as natural happiness. [14:59] Lots of choice and opportunity to ruminate are a recipe for unhappiness. [15:16] Gratefulness comes before happiness. Gratitude is tied to happiness and helps people feel more positive emotions. [16:42] The benefits of gratitude filtering can impact all areas of life in a positive way. [17:34] When you are “filtering for gratitude” as I call it, you are resetting the way your subconscious is looking at the world around you – encouraging it to find good things happening so you will have something to write about at the end of the day or week. [18:08] Students who hand wrote a letter of gratitude had a huge boost in their happiness. [19:27] Our brains pay attention to what we write down, and it allows us to slow down and be thoughtful. The Brainy Business | Understanding the Psychology of Why People Buy | Behavioral Economics

This week marks the halfway point in our episodes on the types of NUDGES. We have already covered incentives and understanding mapping. Today, is all about defaults within choice architecture. When you think about choice and defaults, you may think it only applies when there is a preselected option on a list, but this is not the case. In every choice there is always a default. In many cases, the default is to do nothing…and that is still a choice, which is important for many choice architects to remember. I won’t be talking too much about what a default is, but I will talk about how what I’m calling “implied defaults” can be incredibly helpful when they are used strategically. I’ll also talk about how customers appreciate them and how they can benefit the company using them. In this behavioral economics podcast, I also go over how defaults can apply to the air conditioning example I have been using and how this concept can be applied to your company or service and how it can even help you save money. In many cases, the default is to do nothing…and that is still a choice, which is important for many choice architects to remember. [03:32] When you are constructing a choice for someone, it is important to remember what their default is and how status quo bias will influence the default. [04:19] Air conditioning example. The default is to do nothing. [05:09] The company should make it easier for their customer to overcome this default hurdle. [07:34] The unit size we need is based on things that are already known…but they choose not to mention any numbers at all until you are deep into the process. [07:43] This is a mistake because first, there is no anchor. When there isn't an anchor the anchor is zero. This is a terrible place to start. [08:12] Sticker shock is created when people actually hear the cost. [09:24] When thinking about defaults in choices, it is important to realize that each complete choice can be broken down into a bunch of mini choices, and each one has its own default. [09:58] When the choice is presented, it can be properly worded to help nudge to a different default than nothing. [10:50] The default when quoting pricing for AC could and should be for the monthly payment of a loan instead of the bulk cost. [12:05] I give an example of where I move the default option in the offer from “not getting air conditioning” (the true default) to getting AC on a 24 month loan (the implied default). This is the power of framing. [13:09] How does a company choose and understand what they should use as their default? [13:28] Understanding incentives and how they impact the business is very important when choosing a default. [16:55] Carrie Clarke of Next Level Coaching does a great job framing with, “The ROI on coaching is 700% and you will reach your goals 9 times faster than trying to do it alone.” [18:28] Printing receipts is an example where defaults can cost a business money. [19:52] The city of Tulsa, Oklahoma reportedly switched all their printers to default to double-sided printing, which they estimated saved them more than $41,000 a year in unnecessary expense. [20:39] Our default as humans is often to eat food in front of us and mindless eating can be a problem. If the default plate is smaller, you will put less on the plate and often realize you are full earlier. [21:51] Not defaulting to adding straws and napkins to orders can reduce waste. [22:24] An Amazon subscription example, which used a default. [26:01] Think about your business. Do you have a product or service that people buy regularly? [26:38] An opt in versus opt out can have a huge impact on choice. [28:05] Where do you have opt ins versus opt outs in your business? Are there any features people have to opt in for that would actually be best for them and increase your profitability? [30:13] Think about what your customers want and what will benefit them and what's going to benefit the business before you set up that default. [31:03] GAP insurance is usually an add on which is a hard sell. The advice I would give is to bundle it with the initial quote and clients can opt out if they want. [33:46] Defaults are a powerful and very simple nudge to apply. When used responsibly, defaults are great and often appreciated by customers. [36:27] Implied defaults can be incredibly helpful when they are used strategically. Customers appreciate them and they can benefit the company using them. Thanks for listening. Last week, I kicked off the different types of nudges and how they apply to choice architecture with incentives. The word NUDGES is an acronym for the categories of nudging, and we are breaking those down episode by episode over six weeks to showcase different aspects of choice architecture and nudging. Now that we tackled incentives last week, we will jump into understanding mapping – both what in the world that means...and how to use it to your best advantage in your business. In this behavioral economics podcast, I share how nudges and my 5 Steps for Mapping can be used in your business to encourage the buying process. CLICK HERE FOR YOUR FREE DOWNLOAD! Show Notes [02:56] Thaler and Sunstein describe a mapping as “the relation between choice and welfare” and use a simple example of choosing a flavor of ice cream in one of their papers on choice architecture. [03:30] At its core, the path from the choice and its outcome is called a mapping. [03:50] For ice cream, you have some mapping in your brain that let you know which flavors you would enjoy the most. [04:20] It's more difficult to see the mapping with more complex choices. [04:49] Their paper uses the options of surgery, radiation, or watchful waiting with a cancer diagnosis. Comparing the options weighs a longer life against negative side effects. [05:45] In spite of this, most patients decide which course to choose at the very first meeting when they are given the diagnosis. The option they choose also depends strongly on the type of doctor they see. [06:44] My five steps for a choice architect to make the mapping as clear as possible: 1) encourage thoughtful review and open-mindedness, 2) break it down, 3) make it relatable, 4) help them get there, and 5) call to action. [07:25] With big decisions it's important to understand your biases. [08:21] It's important for doctors as the choice architects to understand the way they are framing the options. [09:29] Our brains put more weight on the default or what we hear about first. [10:02] The best choice architect should know that a person shouldn't make a decision when they are highly emotional. [11:06] Breaking it down. If you want to make a map, it's important understand all of the options available. [12:41] That way you can anticipate the questions a potential customer (or patient or client) will have, the things they need to know, and guide them to the right recommendation. [13:11] Make it relatable using simple rules of thumb. [13:56] Use the customer's language and an example that they can relate back to. [15:16] Find the thing that customers care the most about. [15:50] The way you build your choice architecture is to think about how your customers will determine what to buy. What is the primary reason they are buying? [16:06] What do your customers need to know or hear, and what rule of thumb will make the choice simple and easy to make? [16:51] Once you know what your customers need, they still may require a little sample to get there. Incorporating the senses can help them make a decision. [17:44] Your call-to-action is the final step - it is important because it helps the chooser realize it is an appropriate time to stop analyzing and consider making a choice. [18:41] It's also important to prime all throughout the interaction. [19:15] To encourage thoughtful review, an air conditioning company should know that the customer has other options. [20:11] Frame the cost in a relatable way. [21:49] Relating their mindset to the right point is your “taste test” when they can’t have a physical sample. [22:23] Ask for the sale...and then stop and wait. [23:52] If you use a script, understand the intent behind the script and know the content by heart in order to have a true conversation. [24:12] Price is never about price. It's about all of the things leading up to the price. [25:42] Here are some basic mapping examples (because the final installment of the series – the “S” in nudges – is for structuring complex choices). [26:29] Using a menu to break options down into manageable chunks. Well worded descriptions help you evaluate if the item is something that you would like. [28:10] One well chosen word can make your brain want to read the description. [30:00] Our subconscious brain can take in a lot of information and glosses over a lot of things. [31:03] These menu descriptions include some taste words as well as relativity, anchoring and adjustment, and framing. [31:55] A nail salon example. [33:47] Adding more may seem like a benefit, but when it doesn’t have a useful map so the chooser can compare, adding more options can cause a lot more harm than good. [34:47] When creating a product website, consider what you present from the mind of the customer (think back to the menu example). [36:30] With a service website keep in mind the concept of incentives. [38:00] How our brain sees miles per gallon wrong, and why gallons per mile is better (yes, they are different). [39:54] How can you put numbers out there that are easier for people to understand and see the value? [40:05] Thaler and Sunstein recommend a system called “RECAP” which stands for Record, Evaluate, Compare Alternative Prices. [41:24] What if movies did not have trailers or descriptions? Trailers help you map the available movies and decide what you want to see. [42:45] Commercials take advantage of mirror neurons in the customer’s brain by showing someone else using the product, tasting it, picking it out from a menu or off a shelf. [44:54] The visual is best for the subconscious. [45:09] Any type of company – whether you sell physical products or a service – can use a guarantee of some kind. [45:58] Simple Tip You Can Use Immediately: use a call out or title like “Most popular” or “top choice” or “best value” – know, of course, that you are responsible in your business to ensure that it true. For a lot of us, the most difficult one to answer is, “Are you happy?” It’s a difficult question to answer because happiness isn’t an easily defined concept. Most people assume that in order to be in recovery from mental illness a person must be happy. But is that really the case? For far too long, in our pursuit to ensure that people understand salvation is by grace through faith, we have neglected teaching Christians to obey. 18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” (emphasis added) Obedience Not Victory We are too often looking to be "victorious" over our sin instead of recognizing our call to obedience. God has placed the responsibility of living a holy life squarely on our shoulders. Yes, He gives us the power to overcome but the actual overcoming is something we must do. Keswick theology - better known as "let go and let God" - is not biblically sound. There is still something we must be doing in working out our own salvation by fear and trembling ((Philippians 2:12). Using words like "victory" and "defeat" to describe overcoming temptation and sin leads us down a path to conclude sin is greater than me. On the other hand, using "obedience" and "disobedience" to describe sin in our life places the responsibility squarely on my choices. I choose to obey...or I don't! I am obedient...or I'm not! Holiness is obedience while disobedience is sin. Pretty simple. To be "defeated" by my sin lets me out from under my responsibility. It's as though something outside of me has defeated me. Not true. Sin is inside of you and tied to your flesh. Power to Choose What God has done for us in giving us the indwelling of the Holy Spirit is not Someone who does the work for us. Instead, He provides the power that gives us the ability to obey and thereby overcome temptation and sin. It is very important that we realize that sin is a choice, an action. And that action is the byproduct of our thinking. James tells us, "...each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. 15 Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death. 16 Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren." (James 1:14-16). Lust is another way of saying thoughts or attitudes. it's your attitudes and thoughts that lead to actions. Sin is born when thoughts make the decision to disobey.
