On this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I sit down with Ruthie Foster to talk about her new album, Just Say Yes, and the musical journey that gave her such a powerful connection to songs, audiences, and the spirit inside a performance.Ruthie takes me into the making of the record with co-writer and producer Tyler Bryant. We talk about the importance of a great rhythm section, how different drummers can reshape a singer's phrasing, and why Ruthie prefers to step aside and let musicians bring their own interpretations to her songs. She also introduces us to her self-created background vocal group, affectionately known as the “Cheap Inspirations.”We trace Ruthie's story from learning piano and guitar in small-town Texas to studying music in Waco and working as a session singer during her time with Atlantic Records in New York. She reflects on the education she received in studios, songwriter circles, church services, and nearly empty clubs—and how each setting taught her something different about craft, versatility, and connecting with a room.At the center of our conversation is the idea behind Just Say Yes. What began as a reminder to accept professional opportunities has grown into something more personal: saying yes to herself, her family, and what truly matters. We also discuss parenthood, the emotional life of a song, and why Ruthie is still waiting for these new songs to reveal everything they have to teach her.Key TakeawaysRuthie gives the musicians on her albums room to interpret each song and contribute their own musical personalities. Her background as a New York session singer taught her versatility, efficiency, and how to change the timbre of her voice for different projects.Studying music in Waco exposed her to arranging, publishing, copyright, big-band instrumentation, and the business behind a musical career.Growing up in the church taught Ruthie that music begins with feeling and with the ability to change the atmosphere in a room.Songs continue to evolve for her over time, sometimes revealing their full emotional meaning only after years of performance.Just Say Yes looks forward, while her previous album, Mileage, invited her to look back over her life. The album's title has grown from a professional reminder into a commitment to say yes to herself, her family, and the things that matter most.Music from the EpisodeDoubling Back - Ruthie FosterThank You - Ruthie FosterYes - Ruthie FosterHold On - Ruthie FosterAbout the PodcastThe Bandwich Tapes is a podcast about music, creativity, and the people who devote their lives to making sound. In this episode of Seeing Them Live, Charles sits down with Ben Daughtry and Jonathan Palmer of Love Jones — the Louisville-born, LA-based band that has been crafting their unique blend of lounge, soul, pop, and sharp-witted storytelling for over three decades. The conversation kicks off with a shared love of live music, as both Ben and Jonathan trace their concert-going roots back to the same unlikely starting point: Van Halen. Ben recalls sneaking into a show at 14, way too young to be there, watching a then-unknown Van Halen open for Black Sabbath and feeling like "a bomb going off." Jonathan recounts his own Van Halen baptism at Freedom Hall in Louisville on the Women and Children First Invasion Tour — complete with $7.50 festival seating and his mother taking notes in the stands. From there, the episode becomes a wide-ranging tour through decades of live music obsession. The guys swap stories about Ted Nugent crowd surges, jumping on stage with GWAR in New Orleans, playing congas with Tool at an early Lollapalooza, and watching Rage Against the Machine move 60,000 people. Jonathan shares privileged industry moments — seeing The Rolling Stones at a 600-capacity room in New York alongside Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz, and Questlove, and catching Nine-Inch Nails at The Troubadour when they felt "too big for the building." The conversation is fueled by genuine enthusiasm, with each story triggering another in a kind of joyful avalanche of rock and roll memory. The second half of the episode turns to the band's own story — from their residency at Largo on Fairfax, where David Bowie once sat quietly in a booth and Tool's crew became regulars, to their unexpected appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon celebrating the 25th anniversary of their debut album Here's to the Losers. Charles and the guys dig into the Cocktail Nation moment of the '90s, the making of their new album The Greatest Show on Earth — written during COVID jam sessions in a Louisville warehouse with crickets chirping and trains passing — and the cinematic, Gil Evans-influenced sound that ties its six expansive tracks together. The episode closes with the band expressing hope to get back on the road, a shout-out to their partnership with Whiskey Thief Distillery, and a tease of possible activity around the 30th anniversary of the film Swingers, on whose soundtrack Love Jones famously appeared. BANDS: Adele, B-52s, Beastie Boys, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Black Sabbath, Chicago, Combustible Edison, Devo, Earth Wind & Fire, Fishbone, Foo Fighters, GWAR, James Brown, Led Zeppelin, Love Jones, Metallica, Metric, Molly Hatchet, Morphine, Nine Inch Nails, Oasis, Rage Against the Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rolling Stones, Sea and Cake, Steely Dan, Supertramp, Ted Nugent, The Cars, The Cocktails, Tool, Tortoise, Van Halen, ZZ Top. What happens when a Fantasyland theater stops feeling like a must-see and starts feeling like filler? This week, Stephen is joined by Jenny and Marissa as we take on one of the most iconic show spaces in the park and ask a bold question: what if Mickey's PhilharMagic evolves into something entirely new?We explore a reimagined experience built around the Muses from Hercules, reframing them not as supporting characters but as the storytellers of mythology itself. In this version, guests step into an immersive, live performance where the Muses summon and reshape the myth of heroes in real time, turning Hercules into a case study in how legends are created, remembered, and rewritten.Along the way, we break down the operational tradeoffs of replacing a high-capacity, push-button attraction with a live performer-driven spectacle, how the theater itself becomes part of the show, and why it is designed to feel like a one-night-only event happening every day.We also dig into modular storytelling through music, with each Muse interpreting “The Gospel Truth” in their own voice, the return of Hades as a disruptive force in the narrative, and how songs like “Zero to Hero” and “A Star Is Born” are recontextualized as myth-making moments rather than character arcs. Finally, we explore how this concept opens the door to a larger idea of myth-based storytelling across Disney's hero library, and what it means when Fantasyland stops being something you watch and becomes something you are part of.Don't forget to check us out on Instagram!
Rencontre entre la chanteuse soul américaine Michelle David et le Français Tiwayo #SessionLive. Michelle David & The True-Tones ouvrent un nouveau chapitre avec Soul Woman sorti sur le label Record Kicks. Marvin Gaye's I Want You could be one of his greatest albums, and he didn't even write it. Producer Leon Ware wrote most of the songs for himself. Marvin Gaye was only supposed to record the title track. But he heard Leon playing a demo of the album one night and stayed up listening until morning. The next day, he asked Ware if he could have the whole thing. In this episode, Peter and Adam break down why the title track, "I Want You", might be one of his best songs, and whether the rest of the album can possibly live up to it.This episode was recorded before the passing of James Gadson (June 17, 1939 – April 2, 2026), the drummer on I Want You. Gadson was one of the defining session drummers of 1970s soul. He was the drummer behind "Lean On Me," "I Will Survive," "Express Yourself", and the groove that powers this very album.
