It’s been a year since the first licensed psilocybin service centers in Oregon opened – facilities where people 21 and older can legally ingest psychedelic mushrooms in a supervised, therapeutic setting. Oregon became the first state in the nation to approve and regulate the use of psilocybin through a legal framework set up and administered by the Oregon Health Authority. The agency has currently awarded licenses to 28 psilocybin service centers which continue to face regulatory and economic headwinds. According to recent reporting in the Capital Chronicle, entrepreneurs are struggling with getting customers through the door, given state restrictions around using social media to advertise and waning interest since the market opened last year. The Oregon Health Authority is also threatening to revoke approval for a school in Ashland that is claiming religious exemption from state rules around the training of facilitators who supervise clients during their psychedelic trips. In March, OPB reported on the closure of the Synthesis Institute, a psilocybin training program that declared bankruptcy after charging students thousands of dollars for its curriculum. Joining us to talk about the state of the legal psilocybin industry in Oregon is freelance journalist Grant Stringer.

Åren 2013-2016 var hon post doc vid Department of Psychiatry och Osher Center for Integrative medicine, University of California, San Francisco. In this episode, Joe interviews Maya Albert: Co-Founder of the Psyched conference, and Director of Operations at Tabula Rasa Ventures and the Synthesis Institute. She shares her journey of how she became involved in the psychedelic space through her mother, and her personal experience as a patient in a clinical trial on psilocybin for the treatment of anorexia – a much more common and deadly affliction than most people realize. She discusses her involvement with the various psychedelic gatherings surrounding Davos and the World Economic Forum, as well as the work she's doing with Tabula Rasa and some of their clients seeking to expand insurance coverage to psychedelic-assisted therapy. We are living in a time when ancient plant medicines are making a strong comeback. The conversation around psychedelic medicine has shifted significantly in the past 10-15 years and has been covered by popular media outlets. This shift is attributed to the mental health crisis, with approximately 50 million Americans diagnosed with mental health conditions and the pandemic exacerbating the issue. People are desperate to heal and are seeking out unconventional methods. In this episode, we explore psychedelics' (particularly psilocybin/mushrooms') potential for healing and discuss the societal stigma surrounding them, as well as the need for open conversations around their safe use. Join us as we reflect on the potential of psychedelics to support healing in individuals - as well as their positive effects on families and communities. Truth Fairy appears solo for this special episode in conversation with guests James Clifton, former Lead Facilitator, and Daan Keiman, former Lead Facilitator and Director of Program and Product Development, of the Synthesis Institute. This conversation aims to shed more light on the recent headlines surrounding the termination of employees and contractors by Synthesis as reported recently in psychedelic outlets like Lucid News.James Clifton and Daan Keiman introduce themselves and get in depth about their own stories of how they came to psychedelic therapy and the formational time period in discussion with Martijn Schirp. They each give much-needed context to discussions about Synthesis - its origins, how the retreats came together, the thought and care put into the approach. They also note when some tensions started and what was behind the tension. Truth Fairy leads a very probing and insightful conversation with James and Daan in which they explore the truths and requirements for working with psychedelics, how the attitude of potential clients changed after the release of “How to Change Your Mind” by Michael Pollan, the complexities with diverse practitioners and educational considerations the leadership team constantly considered as Synthesis grew, and the challenge of balancing psychedelic reality against capitalist needs. James and Daan give context and meaning to the headlines, unpacking the impetus behind Synthesis and truths of its journey. “I think this may be something that I want to emphasize, because in a lot of what has been published, this is a perspective that is missing, it is that the leadership team itself struggled with the complexity. They had this monumental task ahead of them of bringing together this very diverse group of practitioners with their own perspectives on how to do this work, of navigating all these legal challenges, not to mention all the financial constraints and financial commitments that they made to investors, and to then ride this wave of this massive hype that started to started to emerge. I think it's within that sort of vast growing field - adding a corona pandemic that locked everything down and that required the organization to really make a radical shift in orienting themselves now towards the practitioner training - there's this challenge that comes with both asking yourself as an organization, who are we and what do we do and what do we offer as services.” - Daan KeimanAbout James Clifton:James Clifton has been a guide and ally for hundreds of individuals and groups in a variety of complex settings and environments, including hospice care, conflict zones and navigating non-ordinary states and realms of consciousness in psychedelic spaces for over 35 years. As a clinically trained, trauma and integrally informed psychotherapist, he works in professional practice with individuals and their direct experiences that come with all the varieties that an extra-ordinary state demands and as it unfolds. He was part of the core faculty and also retreat team lead at the Synthesis institute from 2019. He continues to consult internationally, advise, lead, supervise and support developing teams and organizations committed to the best emergent practices in psychedelic care.He lives mostly in the UK on the South Coast and sometimes you'll find him in the wilds of the South West Coast of Cornwall.About Daan Keiman:Daan holds an MA in Spiritual Care and is the co-founder of Guild of Guides Netherlands: an organization that seeks to professionalize psychedelic sitting services. His experience with guiding and caring for people in altered states of consciousness spans over a decade; ranging from psychedelic harm reduction work on festivals to his private practice as a Psychedelic Chaplain.Daan draws from his personal Buddhist practices, psychedelic research and his professional experiences to create compassionate and powerful containers for personal and relational transformation. We're discussing the bankruptcy of Synthesis Institute and the future of access to psychedelic healing. This conversation is based on our extensive personal experience in the field and inspired by the article linked below written by Jules Evans.https://ecstaticintegration.substack.com/p/synthesis-and-the-shadow-of-psychedelic___________________________________________________
In this episode of Psychedelics Weekly, Joe and Kyle are back at it, talking about news and what's going on at Psychedelics Today (applications for Vital close this Sunday, March 26, and we've just announced a new neuroscience course!). Following up on last week's news that Field Trip Health had closed five clinics, they start with more unfortunate news: that Field Trip is laying off a lot of people, Ronan Levy has resigned as the CEO, trading has been suspended, and the company has obtained CCAA Protection (which, through the Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act, essentially allows a struggling company a chance to restructure its finances to avoid bankruptcy, all through a formal Plan of Arrangement). And in similar news, all Ketamine Wellness Centers (an Arizona company recently acquired by Delic Holdings) would be closing immediately, with employees let go with little warning or explanation. These stories (and Synthesis Institute's downfall) highlight the sad reality many of us in the psychedelic space forget: that just because a business is heart-centered and psychedelic-minded, it's still a business, and businesses need to be profitable to survive. Next, they cover Melissa Lavasani and the Psychedelic Medicine Coalition creating the Psychedelic Medicine PAC (Political Action Committee) to get more government funding behind psychedelic research. Members of PMC went to D.C. last week, presenting a psychedelic briefing to begin the process of educating legislators about the realities of plant medicines and psychedelic-assisted therapy (and Joe was there). And they discuss more: concerns over Australia's recent about-face on MDMA and psilocybin being used legally; a recent study where researchers used EEG and fMRI together to record what is happening in the brain while under the influence of DMT (and we should probably have Manesh Girn on again to explain it better than we could); and an interview with Eric Andre at SXSW where, in about 2 minutes, he brilliantly shines a light on drug exceptionalism, the lies of the drug war, and the need for more education on psychedelics – all to a bewildered reporter who didn't seem prepared to talk to Eric Andre (we are- please come on the podcast!). www.psychedelicstoday.com
Could growing mushrooms be as easy as blasting the woods with liquid spores from a super soaker? In this episode of The Mushroom Show, we delve into the idea of "guerilla mushroom gardening", including how successful it can be and why anyone would do it in the first place. We also cover the recent bankruptcy of Synthesis Institute and its impact on the Oregon Psilocybin Movement. This episode also includes a great conversation with Kyle Buller from Psychedelics Today about training psilocybin therapists and the state of psilocybin worldwide.#themushroomshow #mushroompowered #fungi Chapters:0:00 Intro0:53 Guerilla Mushroom Gardening12:08 The Downfall Of Synthesis Institute19:59 Interview With Kyle Buller of Psychedelics Today1:06:02 OutroLinks:Guerilla Gardening: [1] https://www.vice.com/en/article/3ak84j/guerilla-gardeners-magic-mushroomsSynthesis Institute:[1] https://ecstaticintegration.substack.com/p/synthesis-and-the-shadow-of-psychedelic[2] https://psychedelicalpha.com/news/inside-synthesis-institutes-implosionPsychedelics Today:[1] https://psychedelicstoday.com/[2] https://www.vitalpsychedelictraining.com/
In this episode of Psychedelics Weekly, Joe and Kyle join up once again to discuss the news and articles they found the most interesting this week. They start with the business news everyone is talking about: Field Trip Health & Wellness closing 5 of their clinics due to financial struggles (a deficit of $48.7 million since their inception and a net loss of $6.9 million reported for the last quarter), little confidence they'd be able to receive more funding, and the changing landscape of ketamine telehealth now that the Covid Public Health Emergency should finally come to an end in May. They also highlight an article dissecting the collapse of Synthesis Institute and the lessons to be learned, with both stories really showing just how new and unstable psychedelic business still is, and how the allure of first-mover advantage can be a dangerous gamble. They also discuss four drug reform bills introduced in Vermont: two of which would decriminalize simple possession of all drugs, making a "personal use supply of drugs” a civil offense with a $50 fine; one removing penalties for using or selling psilocybin; and the last decriminalizing certain psychedelic plants and fungi. And they look at a research study aiming to learn more about people's lives after they've been involved in a clinical trial, Time Magazine's article about psychedelics and couples therapy, and a study that found that while 64% of survey respondents said at-home ketamine helped their symptoms, 55% (and 58% of Millennials) said they used more than the recommended dose – either by accident or on purpose. www.psychedelicstoday.com
Welcome to Episode 58 of Th3Lab Podcast hosted by Quay, Q, and Jon! (Josh will be back next week, he was on his Honeymoon.) In this episode, we explore a diverse range of topics starting with the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank. We delve into the causes of the bank run and how the bank got stuck holding 1.5% interest yields while the market was selling over 5%. We also discuss how the CEO, CFO, and CMO sold off significant amounts of stocks before the bank collapsed. We also talk about the declining trend of teenagers meeting up with friends almost every day and question whether it is due to the rise of smartphones and social media or the lack of free public locations that allow children to socialize. In the entertainment world, we discuss Warner Bros CEO's call for streaming services to raise prices and Elon Musk's plan to build his own city in Texas where his employees would live and work. We also cover the controversy surrounding Logic's cover of "It Was a Good Day" and the accusations that Larry June is copying Dom Kennedy's flow. Moving on to current events, we talk about the recent kidnapping in Mexico and Tiger Woods' ex-girlfriend's $30 million lawsuit against him for allegedly tricking her into leaving his house. Finally, we give a full review of Creed 3 and discuss the upcoming release of ranch-flavored ice cream at Walmart stores across the country. To end the episode, we provide an update on Oregon's mushroom legalization efforts, specifically the InnerTrek program's graduation of the first students trained in accompanying patients during psilocybin therapy and the bankruptcy of the Synthesis Institute, leaving over 200 students in Oregon trying to get refunds. ---- This podcast is intended for entertainment purposes only and is not intended to be taken seriously. In this episode of Psychedelics Weekly, David is joined by Kyle, who is finally home after a lot of traveling, to talk shop and dig into the articles they found the most interesting this week. They begin with the news that Paul Stamets now has a species of mushroom named after him (Psilocybe stametsii), then take a look at a recent self-report study called “Prevalence and associations of challenging, difficult or distressing experiences using classic psychedelics,” which aimed to collect data on just how many psychedelic users (in this study, anyone who had ever tried a psychedelic) felt that they had had a challenging or difficult experience. They discuss the results and highlight some interesting data: that LSD was the most commonly associated substance, that smoking cannabis was one of the most commonly reported interventions, and of course, the question of whether or not these experiences were beneficial. They then talk about Synthesis Institute closing its doors, the possible hope Synthesis could have, and the sadness in this – when businesses fail, it's easy to look at numbers and profit margins and be dismissive, but we forget the people involved; not just at Synthesis, but the hundreds of would-be students. And lastly, they look at an article about a California-based startup called the Reality Center, which uses a combination of pulsing lights, sounds, and vibrations to create a drug-free but seemingly very psychedelic experience, reminding us yet again that you do not need a substance to achieve non-ordinary states of consciousness. www.psychedelicstoday.com
Minter Dialogue with Martijn Schirp Martijn Schirp is the cofounder and Chief Visionary Officer at the Synthesis Institute, that offers safe, legal, medically supervised psychedelic retreats, based out of Amsterdam in the Netherlands. As they write on their site, they "make the psychedelic experience accessible for curious individuals who want to utilize moderate-to-high doses of truffles to catalyze creative breakthroughs, explore consciousness, find meaning, improve confidence, and search for a mystical experience." In this conversation, we discuss Martijn's journey to founding the Synthesis Institute, what has changed in our society that has brought about our crisis in mental health, the treatments they provide, the protocols they follow and the prospects for the future. Welcome to the podcast of ALPS, the conference that wants to make us aware of psychedelic science and its effects on the psyche. A whole program with many speakers from Switzerland, Europe and all over the world. In this episode, syde welcomes Sam Candy, PhD ecologist, independent researcher, consultant and science writer. Dr. Gandy has varied experience of working within the psychedelic field, as a past scientific assistant to the director of the Beckley Foundation, as a research assistant with the Synthesis Institute, and as a consultant for PsiClone. He is a certified Shinrin Yoku forest bathing practitioner and also leads fungi growing workshops on occasion. He is also collaborating with the Centre for Psychedelic Research at Imperial College London, researching on the capacity of psychedelics to influence human relationships with nature. More info on Sam : https://twitter.com/SamwiseGandy https://www.instagram.com/samwisegandy https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Sam-Gandy-4 Questions asked to Sam: - What is the link between nature and psychedelics ? - Are there psychedelics that have more impact on how we see and perceive Nature ? - You mentioned ‘setting'. It is true that sometimes we talk about setting in a clinical way. The setting in nature could be also a way to consume psychedelics. Can you explain your thoughts on that? - The are theories saying that coming from nature, these substances - such as psilocybin - could be a message from nature for us to take care of it. What would be your opinion on that ? - How do you see the future of your researches ? This interview was recorded during the Alps Conference 2022 on psychedelic research in Bern, Switzerland on 28.10.2022. More info on the Alps Conference: https://www.alpsconference.com/
Today I have the treat of speaking with Dr Ros Watts - a clinical psychologist, a mother, and a passionate nature lover. Having worked as the Clinical Lead for Imperial College London's pioneering psilocybin trial, and then as the Clinical Director at Synthesis Institute, Ros is one of the most prominent and experienced voices in the field of psychedelic research today. She has been named one of the 50 Most Influential People in Psychedelics and one of the Top 16 Women Shaping the Future of Psychedelics, and it is her focus on integration, harm-reduction and inclusion in the psychedelic space that makes Ros's work so unique in this field. With a recently published a paper providing a validated scale for assessing psychological connectedness in a broad sense, Ros has designed The Watts Connectedness Scale as a clinical, practical tool for measuring our sense of connectedness to ourselves, to others, and to the living world. Ros has a desire to help people cultivate connectedness especially after psychedelic experiences, and it is from this place that she has created an integration community called ACER Integration, which aims to provide experiential education around how to integrate singular experiences into the wider collective and how to connect more deeply to life and one another, in all our relational complexity and richness. Recorded on 16th Nov 2022.
Alex speaks with Garyth Moxey from Inner Reals Center, based in Vancouver B.C. They discuss: Garyth's upbringing in south-west England close to the Stonehenge Free Festival. What Ibogaine is. How it is used traditionally and as a form of treatment. Ibogaine as a successful treatment for addiction. 5-MEO DMT Garyth Moxey is a Canadian born entheogen provider and harm reduction activist based in Vancouver B.C. He is a Synthesis Institute trained psychedelic therapist. His journey with psychedelics started in the early 80's in the U.K. with Stonehenge Free Festival and the traveler community. After years spent traveling and living in South East Asia he found himself struggling with alcohol and a poly-drug addiction. Many failed rehab attempts and traditional recovery methods later, he took LSD therapeutically in Marin County in 2000 and ended his relationship with alcohol. After a brief opioid relapse in 2011 he took Iboga which made an incredible difference and set him on the path to his life's work. He co-formed Liberty Root after the Vancouver Ibogaine conference in 2012 and then went on to form Inner Realms Center in 2016. As of Jan 2022, Garyth has facilitated 375 Ibogaine treatments. He has also completed psychedelic psychotherapy fundamentals at the Orenda Institute, Cortez Island B.C. in the fall of 2016 and as of April 2022, completed a Psychedelic Therapist certificate program from Synthesis Institute. Garyth was also part of the award winning independent documentary, Dosed made to raise awareness about the healing powers of psychedelic medicine, and now Dosed II. He is also a medical cannabis activist and custom produces high-grade cannabis oil for clients dealing with a wide range of medical conditions. He now works tirelessly with his partner Blair and a variety of therapists to bring about positive lasting change in the people who have chosen to be his clientele. This week's episode sees Victoria Fenton reunited with her colleague and friend, Alex Manos as he shares with her (and all of you!) his journey from personal illness, to becoming a Personal Trainer, into a nutrition professional and ultimately Functional Medicine practitioner - and from there into both breathwork and psychedelic facilitation training. Victoria and Alex discuss: Why psychedelics - especially psilocybin - and what Alex's experiences with The Synthesis Institute have provided him The journey towards feeling more emotion with psilocybin experiences The current movement of promotion of psychedelics and how that needs to be balanced with temperance and care, and a focus on community and integration The contrast between the Western medical approach and the indigenous, shamanistic traditions The growth of psychedelic experimentation in the UK and Europe The power of psychedelics for shifting someone into a different way of being - and the destruction and grief that can be part of that process Breathwork - its role, power, potential, and how to do this right (clue: it's not about the big emotional release) Integrating breathwork into psilocybin retreats and Alex's vision for his professional future The limitations of Functional Medicine and dependency on protocols The felt sense of safety and its fundamental role in healing, irrespective of modality Despite being one of the UK's leading Functional Medicine Practitioners (IFMCP) with a focus in gut health and mould Illness, Alex's interests further extend into physical therapy, movement, resiliency, coaching, biohacking, psychedelics, breathwork, masculinity, spirituality, and the assimilation or ancient wisdom concerning health. Away from clinic, Alex co-founded Healthpath Pro and The Applied Function Medicine Mentoring Program, and is the Chief Wellness Officer for Exhale Coffee - the U.K's healthiest coffee! Alex also lectures at various colleges and institutions including The Institute Of Optimum Nutrition and is on the MSc program at The Centre For Nutritional Education and Lifestyle Management. Get early access to our latest psychology lectures: http://bit.ly/new-talks5 Psychedelic therapy is at a historic moment, as the US state of Oregon prepares to legalize it next year, and other US states look set to follow. Companies preparing to offer psychedelic therapy have raised over $5 billion on US stock markets. Hundreds of people are training to be psychedelic therapists or facilitators, and thousands more are on waiting lists for training programs. What shape will the psychedelic future take and what opportunities do they hold for patients and practitioners? What theories underline psychedelic therapy? What are the risks? This talk will be in four parts. First, it will look at the history of psychedelic therapy, focusing particularly on the 1950s and early 1960s in the US. Second, it will look at the contemporary psychedelic renaissance, and how it builds on the research ideas of the 1950s and 60s. Third, it will speculate on how the field will develop into two different paths – medicalized psychedelic therapy, and psychedelic spirituality. Fourth, it will consider difficult psychedelic experiences and the challenge of integration. -- Jules Evans is an honorary research fellow at the Centre for the History of the Emotions at Queen Mary, University of London. On this episode of the Psychedelic Medicine Podcast, Dr. Pedro Teixeira joins to discuss the emerging research about the effects of psychedelics on health behavior change. Dr. Teixeira is a professor of physical activity and health at the University of Lisbon and the director of research for the Synthesis Institute in the Netherlands. He holds bachelors and masters degrees in exercise science and a PhD in nutritional sciences. As an academic, Pedro's main research interest is health behavior change, a field which he is now trying to put into conversation with the latest psychedelic science. In this conversation, Dr. Teixeira shares the basics of the field of health behavior change, which seeks to study how and why people end up developing positive-health-conscious behaviors. This is a field that is of particular interest to clinicians, as doctors are always looking to encourage healthful behaviors in their patients. When it comes to research on the impact of psychedelics on health behavior change, Dr. Teixeira explains that much of the current data is secondary, though some evidence can be drawn from studies that primarily examined psychedelic therapy for tobacco and alcohol cessation. The data that does exist, however, paints a very promising picture, with many psychedelic users reporting positive changes in diet and exercise following experiences with these mind-altering substances—an effect which Dr. Teixeira notes is often observed even if there was no intent for health behavior change prior to the psychedelic experience. However, more research is needed to substantiate these preliminary results. To that end, Pedro shares the idea of “behavioral psychedelics”—a new methodological paradigm in psychedelic research that will focus more on collecting data on concrete behaviors following psychedelic therapy as opposed to the primarily psychometric data which has dominated the field. Dr. Teixeira also emphasizes that the field of health behavior change could be an important vehicle for emphasizing the role of psychedelics as tools for preventative health, taking the field beyond the current paradigm which sees psychedelics as primarily useful for their potential to address acute mental health conditions. Dr. Teixeira can be reached at pteixeira@fmh.ulisboa.pt In this episode: The emerging field of health behavior change Types of health-related behaviors that could be encouraged by psychedelic experiences The new paradigm of “behavioral psychedelics” Possible preventative health roles for psychedelics The evidence from tobacco and alcohol cessation trials for health behavior changes following psychedelic use Quotes: “[Recent observational studies] seem to show that for some reason psychedelic users are not only healthier from a physical health perspective, but there's also indications that that is caused by some of their behaviors.” [13:13] “What better way to convince future politicians or policymakers than to show that people are actually improving the quality of their lives and their health habits and saving healthcare costs and eating more sustainable diets perhaps, if indeed the studies in Oregon and in the future in other places are showing that there is a preventative aspect, there is a lifestyle enhancement aspect to these experiences.” [21:57] “When you behave from a self-determined perspective, or when you're motivated more internally as opposed to being more externally motivated, your outcomes will be better. Your behavioral outcomes, but also your health outcomes.” [26:21] Links: Dr. Teixeira's research group website Dr. Teixeira's paper: Psychedelics and Health Behavior Change Lucid News coverage of Dr. Teixeira's article Study: Effects of Naturalistic Psychedelic Use on Depression, Anxiety, and Well-Being: Associations With Patterns of Use, Reported Harms, and Transformative Mental States Article: Behavioral Psychedelics: Integrating Mind and Behavior to Improve Health and Resilience Article: Ayahuasca and Public Health: Health Status, Psychosocial Well-Being, Lifestyle, and Coping Strategies in a Large Sample of Ritual Ayahuasca Users Dr. Teixeira's talk at INSIGHT 2021: Can Psychedelics Improve Diet, Exercise, Meditation, and Weight Control? *Formerly Everyday Nonordinary The Podcast* Welcome to Integrating Psychedelics, featuring insights gleaned from psychedelic experiences and conversations around how to integrate this wisdom into our daily lives. I'm your host, Jenny Weinar, and in today's episode I'm speaking with Valeria McCarroll. Valeria McCarroll, LMFT, Ph.D., is a professor of somatic and transpersonal psychology at the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) and a licensed marriage and family therapist in private practice. She has been immersed in the field of psychedelic work for over a decade. A graduate of CIIS's Certificate in Psychedelic Therapies and Research, Valeria also serves as the Embodied Wisdom Advisor for Synthesis Institute in their Psychedelic Practitioner Training program. She is formally trained in a school of classical Shakta-Shaiva Tantra. Her personal experience of awakening while working with psychedelics led her to pursue a doctoral degree. That research served as the ground that eventually gave rise to the body of offerings she stewards, Somadelics. Somadelics is a contemporary path of psychedelic mysticism that makes use of the capacity of psychedelics to transform the traumas of embodied systemic oppression. Valeria lives in Northern California with her husband and daughter. When not innovating and refining liberative systems for deconstructing the patriarchy, she enjoys playing outdoors and creating beauty. I could listen to Valeria speak for hours, and in this conversation we discuss: How the limits of traditional talk therapy and somatic therapy led Valeria to the therapeutic use of psychedelics How the experiential nature of psychedelics differs from theoretical discussions Victoria's interest in Kundalini and the intersection of psychedelics and spirituality Pain versus suffering and the pathologizing of pain in our culture The misconception of psychedelics as a magic pill and the need for skilled preparation Healing as process versus outcome Navigating boundaries and issues of consent when working with expanded states of consciousness Bypassing versus real transformation through psychedelic integration Examples of embodiment practices and small, concrete actions as forms of integration The meaning of the word integration The development of Valeria's framework and upcoming book, Somadelics …and more! Dr Watts is a clinical psychologist, a mother, and a nature lover. Her work as the Clinical Lead for Imperial College London's psilocybin trial, and subsequent role as the Clinical Director at Synthesis Institute, have made her one of the most prominent voices and minds in the field of psychedelic research. Dr Watts builds tools and structures to foster connectedness after psychedelic experiences, finding inspiration for their design from nature. The most recent of which is the integration community she's created - ACER Integration. While working in clinical practice Rosalind has developed a psychedelic therapy model she coined ACE, which stands for, ‘Accept, Connect, Embody'. Based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and the ‘Psychological Flexibility Model', she mapped the journey that individuals under the influence of a psychedelic go through when they dive into their experience, extract the meaningful lessons to heal, and then integrate and embody them afterwards. Her qualitative research, exploring the perspectives of participants in several psychedelic research studies, gave rise to her interest in the common theme of ‘connectedness to Self, others, and the world' as an essential aspect of psychedelic treatment. With that patient-centred attitude, she gives insightful talks focusing on the patients' perspective on the psychedelic journey as a part of the healing process.Listen to the podcast to learn about the beauty and the nuances of psychedelic experience and healing.Join Dr Watts for the inaugural launch of ACER Integration here -> https://dandelion.earth/events/622233b3025fc50011891f2e Learn more about ACER Integration -> https://www.drrosalindwatts.com/ Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)Psychedelic therapyForensic psychologyThe Portman ClinicPsychoanalysisPsychedelic use and recidivismAyahuascaMichael PollanRobin Carhart-HarrisMDMAMendel KaelenKintsugiPsilocybinBad tripWilliam A. Sam is an ecologist, researcher and science writer, working at the intersection of ecology and psychedelics. He has conducted ecological field research around the world and also has extensive experience of working in the psychedelic field, at the Beckley Foundation, Synthesis Institute, and the psychedelic music company Wavepaths. He is currently a Project Manager with Norfolk Rivers Ecology and a collaborator with the Centre for Psychedelic Research at Imperial College London, with a research interest in the capacity of psychedelics to influence our connection to nature. Today we talk about the science of how psychedelics can help us discover that we are part of nature.
Psychedelics increase meaningful coincidences as psilocybin researcher Ros Watts tells us. Depressed clients treated with psilocybin experience increases in synchronicities but are sometimes bewildered and frightened by them. Psilocybin therapists also experience increases but are reluctant to talk about them. These psychonauts discover basic nature codes which include sine waves, the web of human and nature connectedness, and the slow pace of substantial change. Our guest, as Clinical Lead of the Psilocybin for Depression Study at Imperial College London, and Clinical Director of Synthesis Institute, Dr. Rosalind Watts recognised the potential of psychedelic therapy, but also its risks and pitfalls, namely that the psychedelic substance can open the door, but real, long-lasting benefits depend on substantial integration support. She is now the founder and director of Twelve Trees Integration, a global community with online and in-person aspects to support people in the months and years after their psychedelic experiences. Twelve Trees focuses on helping people build their connectedness to self, others and the natural world which is the mechanism that Dr Watts discovered to be underpinning the changes observed in her psilocybin for depression research, leading her to develop a psychometric tool for measuring connectedness (Watts Connectedness Scale (the WCS)'. Dr Watts co-founded the UK's first psychedelic integration group, and is a consultant psychologist for Small Pharma, investigating DMT as a treatment for depression. TEDx: Can magic mushrooms unlock depressions https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8kfGaVAXeMY Our host Dr. Bernard Beitman is the first psychiatrist since Carl Jung to attempt to systematize the study of coincidences. He is Founding Director of The Coincidence Project. His book, and his Psychology Today blog, are both titled Connecting with Coincidence. He has developed the first valid and reliable scale to measure coincidence sensitivity, and has written and edited coincidence articles for Psychiatric Annals. He is a visiting professor at the University of Virginia and former chair of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Missouri-Columbia. “The real medicine is the therapeutic relationship and psychedelics beautifully amplify that.” In this episode of the Mindspace podcast, Dr. Joe speaks with Dr. Rosalind Watts. Dr. Watts is the clinical lead of the Imperial College of London's Psilocybin for Depression trials. Most recently, she designed the treatment protocol for and served as a guide for participants in a study comparing psilocybin to an antidepressant at the Centre for Psychedelic Research at Imperial College London. This study was published in the New England Journal of Medicine. And she is also a consultant psychologist for Small Pharma who are investigating DMT as a treatment for depression. She is a clinical psychologist for more than 6 years, and now specializes in psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy. She is the clinical director for the Synthesis Institute, an organization dedicated to “training practitioners to safely, ethically and effectively support people on a journey for healing using truffles containing psilocybin.” She co-hosts a monthly Psychedelic Integration group, alongside Michelle Baker Jones for participants of psilocybin clinical trials. And she will be launching Twelve Trees Integration, a new 12 month psychedelic community integration program for anyone who has experience with psychedelics. You can sign up for the wait list here: www.drrosalindwatts.com She also developed the psychedelic therapy model ‘Accept, Connect, Embody (ACE)' and an iteration for group-based integration of psychedelic experiences ‘Accept, Connect, Embody, Restore' (ACER). It is based on the Hexaflex model in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Dr. Watts and Dr. Joe spoke about: - The surprising results from Dr. Rosalind Watts's recent study comparing psilocybin to an antidepressant - The importance of the therapeutic relationship in healing - The role of psychological flexibility in mental health - The ‘Accept, Connect, Embody' (ACE) model she developed - Her evolving approach to psychedelic integration - The integration online groups she co-founded and co-facilitates - How psychedelics allow people to explore their darkness, whereas antidepressants can hinder that exploration - A guided visualization exercise based on the ACE model - The challenges of integrating psychedelic-assisted therapy into mainstream society

This episode of the Plant Medicine Podcast welcomes Dr. Sam Gandy to discuss the symbiotic relationship between psychedelic experiences and connection with nature. Dr. Gandy holds a PhD in ecological science from the University of Aberdeen and has conducted field research across the globe. He currently works as a research assistant at the Synthesis Institute and as a senior science writer at Wavepaths. He is also a collaborator with the Centre for Psychedelic Research at Imperial College London and was previously a scientific assistant to the director of the Beckley Foundation. In this conversation, Dr. Gandy shares insights from his research into psychedelics and nature relatedness with special emphasis on his 2020 publication “The Potential Synergistic Effects between Psychedelic Administration and Nature Contact for the Improvement of Mental Health” (linked below). Dr. Gandy discusses the numerous overlaps between the experience of nature relatedness—the personal sense of being connected with the natural world—and the experiences induced by psychedelic substances. These overlaps cover a range of domains and all work to promote wellbeing. For example, Dr. Gandy reports that neuroticism decreases both as a result of positive psychedelic experiences and from spending quality time in nature. As high neuroticism can correlate with mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety, interventions that can impact this trait have significant therapeutic potential. In addition to specific overlaps between the psychedelic experience and nature relatedness, Dr. Gandy also discusses how psychedelics and psilocybin in particular seem to increase a sense of nature relatedness. Considering these overlapping benefits and the symbiotic relationship between psychedelics and nature relatedness, Dr. Gandy provides some speculations for how nature can be more intentionally integrated into psychedelic therapies and ceremonies to maximize the therapeutic benefits of both. He mentions that even something as small as decorating a clinical setting with artwork depicting nature can have positive impacts for patients undergoing psychedelic psychotherapy in the space. In this episode: Eudaimonic vs hedonic well being The neurobiological and psychological overlaps between nature relatedness and the psychedelic experience How both psychedelics and nature relatedness promote mindfulness and experiences of awe Ideas for combining psychedelic therapy and experiences of nature to enhance health benefits Quotes: “Nature connectedness is a mediator for some of the benefits to cognition and mood obtained from actually spending time in nature, having contact with nature.” [6:57] “There was a study published last year by a Finnish research group and one of the most common after effects of psychedelic mystical experiences they found was this sustained, positive shift in peoples' relationship to nature.” [17:35] “Psilocybin has this capacity to facilitate this fairly robust, rapid, but most importantly sustained increase in nature relatedness. And the really mysterious and interesting thing is that it can do this even when it's administered in a clinical setting.” [22:47] “The restorative effect of nature obviously benefits both the person having the therapy and the therapist, and it potentially allows for the outdoor nature-based setting to become part of the therapy itself.” [31:00] “If you're going to do any kind of psychedelic nature connection, nature immersion therapy, it's very important to have a cozy, secure structure that people have got as a safe place.” [35:31] Links: Dr. Gandy on Twitter Dr. Gandy's 2020 article The Potential Synergistic Effects between Psychedelic Administration and Nature Contact for the Improvement of Mental Health Dr. Gandy's 2019 article From Egoism to Ecoism: Psychedelics Increase Nature Relatedness in a State-Mediated and Context-Dependent Manner Psychedelic Medicine Association Porangui
